20-year-old, Marina is based in Bangalore and describes her style as tomboy and embracing her “masculine energy.” From a child she has always preferred comfortable, androgynous clothing such as pants and suits over dresses. She first cut her hair short in 5th grade but her father disapproved which meant she had to grow it back and dress girly for her fathers and friends approval. After years of trying to fit in she finally cut her hair short again in 2022 after being Inspired by figures like Kristen Stewart, Ruby Rose, and K-pop idols, who break the norms of gender identification.
Her friends and most of her family have been supportive of her style evolution, though her father is still adjusting to her look. With Christmas coming up Marina and her family usually go to church on Christmas eve and in the past she wears more masculine attires like her dad and brother. However her mother would like her to dress in more feminine clothing and wear a saree just like her. Marina’s style often gets brought up with her grandma and father wishing she’d grow her hair back, dress more feminine and wear traditional clothes. Marina would like to finally make her family happy and wear a traditional saree to church with a long brown wig. Marina will be revealing to her parents, grandmother and female friends.

00:00In my culture, girls are usually expected to wear the patas, sarees, but just not my thing.
00:07I usually wear a suit or something very masculine presenting.
00:11I want to switch it up this year.
00:13Full on feminine, like makeup, hair, heels, saree.
00:16Make it look like a proper Bollywood scene actually.
00:20Hi!
00:21What's up gang?
00:22Seriously?
00:23Hello, Pooja here. Nice to meet you. Come and come.
00:33My look is very masculine presenting.
00:35I usually wear baggy clothes because I'm a dancer and I think my head does most of the talking.
00:41I think tomboy is more of a personality.
00:44A lot of people assume that it's a gender or a sexuality.
00:48I think it's just something that people like to wear, like if you want to wear a pant I think that's okay.
00:52And if you want to wear a skirt, totally normal.
00:56My family has always wanted me to grow my hair back and dress up more feminine.
01:01But I've just never really felt comfortable in those clothes.
01:06Do you know how I cut my hair in 5th grade?
01:10What do you think about it?
01:12I always wanted you in frocks, in those short skirts, the Indian outfit.
01:18And as you grew, you became more of a tomboy.
01:21That was a challenge to me.
01:22Okay, so you know how you wanted to see me in a saree?
01:25Yes, always wanted.
01:27So, I've decided to wear a saree.
01:31What? Seriously?
01:33I want you to pick the saree for me.
01:36Yes, yes, that I can do.
01:37I have a saree to give you.
01:39Okay.
01:40That's not my saree.
01:41That's actually your grandmother's saree.
01:43And she will also feel happy.
01:45Okay.
01:46Alright, bye-bye.
01:47See you.
01:49Are you ready for this?
01:50Yeah.
01:51Let's do it.
01:52Let's go.
01:53Today, we are going to do a soft glam look, which will go very well with Indian sarees.
01:57Marina is not a makeup person, but yeah, I'll try my best to give the best to her.
02:03So, this is a pore primer.
02:05So, when you have, you know, open pores, this is the best thing to put so that it gives that
02:10smooth finishing and makeup will stay longer.
02:14In my culture, girls are usually expected to wear the patas, sarees in school as a kid.
02:21We used to just stick with wearing shorts or my football jerseys.
02:24All these teachers used to call me a boy.
02:26Like, why are you running like boys?
02:28Why are you always with the boys?
02:29Since then, it's been in my head like, oh, maybe I should try to turn it down.
02:33And I tried to do that when I grew a little older.
02:36I had this group of girls that I was friends with and they were very feminine.
02:39And I used to just follow what these girls were doing.
02:41When I used to go to school with a dress or a saree, people genuinely used to be surprised.
02:47Like, oh, you can actually pull up a saree.
02:49Even though I had long hair, they never expected me to actually wear something feminine.
02:55That kind of made me feel like, oh, I'm so out of place here.
03:00Because, like, I'm just doing the same thing as you guys.
03:02So, why is it so different?
03:06Are you nervous?
03:07Uh, yeah.
03:08Maybe, like, a little skeptical about how this is going to turn out.
03:12Who are you revealing this look to?
03:14Um, so, my mom.
03:16My grandmom, brother and best friend.
03:19My mom has always wanted to see me in a saree.
03:22Every time she goes shopping, she will just buy and she'll come home and she'll be like, see, I got this for you.
03:27You got to wear it.
03:28And it's like a guilt trip for me because now I'm feeling bad that I'm not wearing it.
03:31So, even when you wear them, you don't feel that you're enjoying it?
03:34No, I just wear it for them.
03:35Just because they want it.
03:36I think today you're going to enjoy.
03:38I don't think you need contouring because you already have chiseled face.
03:42So, just go ahead with blush now.
03:44When I used to dress feminine, I never used to feel fully confident.
03:49Just my body language used to feel very closed.
03:52I used to feel like I could just, you know, wear what my brother's wearing.
03:56He used to just come up in something that I'd want to wear.
03:58If your saree has some gold in it, this will go.
04:01Eventually, I finally gave up.
04:03I cut my hair.
04:04It was long hair.
04:05I had like all the way up to my shoulders, I think.
04:08They just took and chopped the whole thing.
04:10Once my family saw, they were very upset.
04:12They were just like, why?
04:13Because I'm the only girl in my entire family.
04:16Also, they were just like so disappointed that the only girl also is looking like a boy now.
04:20They took a lot of time to, you know, digest that.
04:23This gives you a shut lift.
04:25People love to judge.
04:26And when it comes to the way I look, being a girl, I get judged every day.
04:31On the internet, there are a few people that come my way saying, God has created only man and woman.
04:36I'm like, okay, good.
04:37Like, I'm not trying to be a man here.
04:39It's just, I'm wearing a shirt.
04:41I'm sorry, it's hurting your ego or something.
04:43People on the road used to genuinely take their time to stop and stare at me.
04:47They just would stare and they would judge me up and down.
04:49They're just like, what is she wearing?
04:52It doesn't matter what they say because if they call me ugly, it's fine.
04:56That's your opinion.
04:57I can call you ugly back.
04:58That's my opinion.
04:59Simple as that.
05:00You're done with the makeup.
05:01Okay.
05:02Now let's get into saree and hair.
05:04Okay.
05:05Let's go.
05:06I think a lot of people are going to be surprised when they see the look.
05:09I've always wondered how I would look with long hair and with a saree.
05:13Because at the end of the day, I'm still a girl.
05:15I still have a feminine side inside me.
05:21How are you feeling?
05:22I'm actually very curious.
05:24I'm like very excited and nervous.
05:27I'm actually very, very nervous.
05:29Are you ready?
05:30Yeah.
05:31Three, two, one.
05:35Oh my God.
05:36Okay.
05:37I did not expect that.
05:41Wow.
05:42My heart is beating so fast right now.
05:45Like even when I was trying to imagine in my head, like with long hair, this is not what
05:50I pictured.
05:51I still feel like I'm in my like my regular clothes and I'm talking to somebody I've met
05:55in some wedding or something.
05:56The makeup looks amazing.
05:58The eye shadow is very pretty.
06:01It feels very refreshing to see myself like this because like a version of me like this
06:06can exist.
06:07Maybe not in this lifetime, but I have a feeling like my mom will laugh at the very first second.
06:13I feel like Stuti is going to flip.
06:14She's just going to be like, huh?
06:19I feel like my grandmother is one person I cannot expect.
06:21I don't know how she's going to react.
06:23I hope they like it.
06:24I really hope they like it.
06:25Then becoming a, you know, a model.
06:28Before that I'll become.
06:29Okay.
06:30Okay.
06:31What's up?
06:33Hi.
06:34What's up?
06:35What's up?
06:36What's up?
06:37What's up?
06:38What's up?
06:39What's up?
06:40What's up?
06:41What's up?
06:42What's up?
06:43Seriously?
06:44What's up?
06:45What?
06:46It's in the style.
06:49Oh my God.
06:50Look at this.
06:51I like your makeup.
06:52Makeup is really nice.
06:53I'm pretty surprised.
06:54It's like I'm sitting next to a different person.
06:55Yeah, she does not look like Marina.
06:56She's wearing a lot of gold right now.
06:57Yeah, she hates gold.
06:58I've seen only a picture of her wearing a saree.
06:59But right now, she's a new Marina.
07:01How do you feel?
07:02Nice.
07:03Nice.
07:04Nice.
07:05I like you.
07:06I like you.
07:07I like you.
07:08Grandmothers and aunts, you know, they would have loved to see her this time.
07:10This time, you know.
07:11It's like I'm sitting next to a different person.
07:13Yeah, she does not look like Marina.
07:14She's wearing a lot of gold right now.
07:15Yeah, she hates gold.
07:16I've seen only a picture of her wearing a saree.
07:18But right now, she's a new Marina.
07:20How do you feel?
07:21Nice.
07:22Nice.
07:23I like you.
07:24I like you.
07:25That's so cute.
07:26Grandmothers and aunts, you know, they would have loved to see her this way, you know.
07:32Everybody waits to see her and she's always in her blazer and shirt and tie.
07:35I don't really like her with long hair.
07:39It looks pretty, but she does not look like herself.
07:43I'm happy with how they reacted.
07:45Like, it was very sweet of them.
07:47I think my grandmother wanted to see this the most.
07:49Because like, even though she didn't speak much, I could tell what she was feeling by her face.
07:53Even when I did have long hair, I've never felt like this.
07:56I think it's the makeup and the jewellery and everything going on.
08:00Like, you know, proper Indian attire.
08:03I feel very, like, cool in a feminine way.
08:07I will never dress like this ever again.
08:09Because I don't like the feeling of hair on my face every two minutes.
08:12But maybe in the near future, when, actually never.
08:17Yeah.
08:23I feel like I have a friend here.
08:25I feel like I don't want him.
08:26And I feel like I'm crying.
08:27That's how I become a little bit.
08:28So I'm crying.
08:29And I'm craving for a little bit.
08:30I'm having something out of my mind while I'm following the living room.
08:31But I know that you're getting a lot of, of my life.
08:33I'm trying to see something all night.
08:34And I'm trying to say something wrong.
08:35I'm trying to make myself doing something wrong.
08:36I'm not an easy answer.
08:37And I'm pretending to see if my daughter, oh, that's right.
08:38So I'm trying to see something wrong.
08:39I'm trying to think so.
08:40So I'm trying to process my life.
08:41You're trying to understand anything wrong.
08:42I'm trying to get something wrong.
08:43And I'm trying to be more careful.
