00:00:00Welcome along to the Spanish Grand Prix 2025 with the top four in the World Championship

00:00:05are the top four on the grid for this afternoon's race.

00:00:08It's round nine of this brilliant World Championship.

00:00:11We move into the second third after eight exhilarating races so far

00:00:15and we've got 66 laps to come today around this circuit.

00:00:1935th time we've raced here in the Formula One World Championship.

00:00:22Lando Norris has the track record top speed of about 215 miles an hour

00:00:28and the elevation changes just to add to the unique characteristics of this brilliant track.

00:00:3414 corners, six to the left and eight to the right.

00:00:36Long run down to turn one and the three tyre compounds are going to be absolutely punished today.

00:00:42The soft is a decent race tyre but how long will it last?

00:00:45That's the C3.

00:00:46The medium could be a favourite tyre for the second stint, the C2.

00:00:49The hard not preferred by the drivers and the team so far.

00:00:52That is the C1 and that is the scene as we're set for a 29th consecutive Spanish Grand Prix

00:00:58in the dry.

00:00:59Maybe the clouds will build up later but it's hot and sunny so far.

00:01:02And here's the starting grid.

00:01:03Only 18 cars on the starting grid today because Lance Stroll has withdrawn from the race

00:01:07because of pain from his wrist injuries

00:01:09and Yuki Tsunoda will line up in the pit lane today after Red Bull changed his suspension.

00:01:14Franco Colopinto last on the grid then for Alpine

00:01:16and Carlos Sainz, his worst ever start at his home Grand Prix, is 17th.

00:01:20Ahead of these two, Esteban Ocon, his worst qualifying in Barcelona,

00:01:24has Nico Hülkenberg in the Sauber for company.

00:01:27Oli Behrmann has his highest start since Suzuka.

00:01:29Ahead of him, Liam Lawson, in the Racing Bulls.

00:01:32And then a best qualifying result in Formula 1 so far for the man in P12,

00:01:36Gabriel Portoleto.

00:01:38Alex Albon has Williams' best qualifying here in nine years.

00:01:42Fernando Alonso starts 10th alongside him.

00:01:44Isaac Hadja who was watching PSG win the Champions League last night

00:01:47alongside the man who starts a place ahead of him, Pierre Gasly for Alpine.

00:01:51Charles Leclerc starts 7th for Ferrari, outside the top four on the grid here

00:01:55for the third consecutive season.

00:01:57It's 6th on the grid for Kimi Antonelli alongside Lewis Hamilton,

00:02:00his best Grand Prix start equal for Ferrari.

00:02:03George Russell starts 4th and led the opening lap from there last year.

00:02:06Max Verstappen's outside the top three on the grid here for the first time since 2020.

00:02:11And it's a McLaren front row lockout for the first time since 1998 in Barcelona.

00:02:15Orlando Norris starts 2nd and Oscar Piastri on pole for the fourth time this season.

00:02:21We are set fair then, Nico Rosberg for an intriguing, exciting, enthralling Spanish Grand Prix

00:02:29and a run down to Turn 1 that is always one of the best of the season.

00:02:32I am on the edge of my seat because this starting line-up has everything to offer.

00:02:38And that run down to Turn 1, as you said, is so long.

00:02:41We've seen so many times people come from behind and jump past the guy in pole.

00:02:46Let's hope we see it again today just for some excitement.

00:02:48Where would you rather start today if you had the choice?

00:02:51Would it be a third pole here in Barcelona for Nico Rosberg?

00:02:55Or do you want the slipstream from second, third or fourth?

00:02:57100% it would be pole position because normally you still should be able to get a good run off the clean side of the grid.

00:03:06There's more grip there because that's where everybody's driving all weekend.

00:03:09Nobody ever drives on the inside.

00:03:10So more grip there should have a good start.

00:03:12And then you can always cover the inside and block anybody off and then brake late and you should be okay.

00:03:18But as I said, if you don't get that start 100% right in the position of Oscar Piastri,

00:03:23those guys behind are going to slipstream flat out.

00:03:26Pressure is on, Piastri then.

00:03:29Starting tyres are out.

00:03:30Bernie Collins at Sky Race Control.

00:03:33Not.

00:03:34They're all on the same tyre bar one.

00:03:36Yeah, exactly, Crofty.

00:03:37Everyone on the soft tyre apart from Yuki Tsunoda from the pit lane on a medium tyre.

00:03:42One thing to watch out for, Crofty, in that top ten,

00:03:45the two McLarens on a new soft tyre

00:03:47versus Verstappen and Russell behind unused soft tyres.

00:03:51So what difference will that make off the line?

00:03:53You can see the shine of the tyres there.

00:03:55Yeah, you can also see Oli Behrman from P14 on a new set of soft tyres as well,

00:04:00and his team mate Esteban Ocon.

00:04:02That just gives you a bit more confidence, doesn't it?

00:04:04Knowing that you've got the perfect grip off the line if you're on a new set.

00:04:08Yes, of course.

00:04:08That's the best tyre to be in, of course.

00:04:10And don't think this is a relaxing moment.

00:04:12This practice start is critical for your race start that's coming up.

00:04:16So you're already fully concentrated and trying to do the most of this start to feel where does the clutch need to be?

00:04:22Where is the grip of the tyres?

00:04:23It's like, it's a super critical moment just there.

00:04:26When the cars came out of the pits, when you were down on the grid a little earlier,

00:04:30Oscar Piastri came out.

00:04:31George Russell was right behind him.

00:04:33I swear George Russell was taking a nice wide line into Turn 1 and practising,

00:04:37swinging that Mercedes in in the way that he did last year.

00:04:40And he was almost racing Oscar Piastri on this straight all the way up to Turn 4.

00:04:44Did you used to do that yourself once upon a time, get a little practice in?

00:04:47All of those things matters.

00:04:48It's all part of the preparation.

00:04:50And it was also smart from George because most likely he's going to be stuck behind someone else

00:04:54in the first couple of laps.

00:04:56And so he was checking his car balance when stuck behind someone else

00:04:59and setting it up accordingly.

00:05:01So that was a very smart move from George.

00:05:04Carlos Sainz has it all to do in the Williams from P17 here today.

00:05:08What about, we've talked about McLaren, what about the Red Bulls, the Mercedes, the Ferraris?

00:05:13Of those three, where's your race pace better money going?

00:05:17Well, the McLarens are the best race pace.

00:05:19Max Verstappen was very close just with Max Verstappen Magic

00:05:22whilst we see everybody just standing on the brake and suddenly slowing down.

00:05:27I think Oscar was slowing down to get everybody to catch up

00:05:29so he doesn't need to wait too long on the grid

00:05:31because then the tyres cool down too much.

00:05:33The ones who were a little bit off were Mercedes.

00:05:36So George Russell on Friday was a little bit off

00:05:38so that's a little bit of a concern for them.

00:05:41And then we have Lewis in his Ferrari.

00:05:43He was strong on Friday

00:05:44and we know that he wants to be on the podium today.

00:05:48He's not exactly sluggish around this circuit is Lewis Hamilton.

00:05:52Six Grand Prix wins equal most with Michael Schumacher.

00:05:55In the pit lane for us this afternoon, Anthony Davidson.

00:05:58Hi, Crofty.

00:05:59Yeah, looking forward to this one.

00:06:00Piastri, meanwhile, has been on the radio to his engineer

00:06:03asking how his last launch was from the grid there.

00:06:06His engineer comes back on saying the clutch stroke was 1% shallow

00:06:09and the clutch timing was late.

00:06:11He's going to have to adapt that one

00:06:13when everything's counting and they start here.

00:06:31So what he was talking about there with the clutch position,

00:06:33the first drop of the clutch, 1%, that was very accurate.

00:06:36But then he was too slow to further release the clutch after that

00:06:41and so he was losing out a lot of performance down the straight.

00:06:44So let's hope he's sorted that out now for the main start.

00:06:46Max Verstappen's led 139 of the last 150 racing laps here in Barcelona.

00:06:53But he starts third on the grid today, second row alongside George Russell.

00:06:58It is McLaren on the front row for the first time locking it out since 1998.

00:07:03They haven't won here since 2005, May the 8th,

00:07:06the day that Oli Behrmann was born.

00:07:09Can they end that barren streak in the next 66 laps?

00:07:14It's all eyes to the screens at the moment if you're in the garages.

00:07:17It's all eyes focused on the gantry above their heads,

00:07:22waiting for the lights to go on.

00:07:23We've got a green flag.

00:07:25We've got two, three, four and five lights.

00:07:28It's lights out and away we go.

00:07:30Oscar Piastri is away very well indeed.

00:07:32Russell trying to pick up a slipstream and now moves out

00:07:35from behind Lando Norris.

00:07:36Piastri's got the jumper there.

00:07:37Three of breaths coming at him from behind.

00:07:39Piastri into turn one.

00:07:41Verstappen with Norris on the inside.

00:07:44Hamilton goes around the outside of George Russell.

00:07:46Kimi Antonelli takes to the escape route.

00:07:48That was a perfect start for Oscar Piastri

00:07:51as Gasly and Hadjar battle away.

00:07:54Verstappen picking up a place already.

00:07:56Wow, what a brilliant, exceptional start for Oscar Piastri.

00:07:59So he listened to his engineer.

00:08:00He dropped that clutch much, much faster in the second phase

00:08:03and absolutely stormed away.

00:08:05What a great start for Max Verstappen too.

00:08:07And there is Charles Leclerc going down the inside at turn five on George Russell.

00:08:11He's lost out to two Ferraris on the opening lap.

00:08:14Horrible, horrible start for George Russell

00:08:16because that Ferrari is quick on race pace also.

00:08:18So once he's behind,

00:08:19it's going to be so hard to get back in front of them.

00:08:21Got to say, it's a bit of a dream start for Ferrari this one.

00:08:24Mercedes with overheating problems on their tyres.

00:08:26They knew this was going to be a struggle.

00:08:28They didn't think it was going to happen this soon.

00:08:30There's Gasly with Hadjar behind him.

00:08:32Fernando Alonso down into turn 10, trying to make an impression.

00:08:35Nico Hülkenberg's got ahead of his teammate Gabriel Bortoleto on the opening lap.

00:08:39There were three cars going wide at turn one.

00:08:41There was definitely two Saubers amongst that.

00:08:43Round the outside goes Hadjar.

00:08:45Alonso pushing him all the way.

00:08:47And while that's happening,

00:08:48Oscar Piastri completes lap one of this Spanish Grand Prix.

00:08:52He's eighth tenths clear of Max Verstappen and Norris, Hamilton,

00:08:55Leclerc and Russell, Antonelli, Gasly, Hadjar

00:08:58and Alonso completes the top ten.

00:09:01So Max now has to go straight into like race mode,

00:09:03managing those tyres and trying to stay as close as possible to Piastri now.

00:09:08That's what he needs to try and do.

00:09:09Nico Hülkenberg from 15th on the grid is up into the points.

00:09:12What a move on Fernando Alonso into turn one.

00:09:15Alonso will try and go around the outside of turn three.

00:09:18And there was almost no gap there.

00:09:20Alonso drove into a disappearing gap

00:09:22and came out unscathed as he gets past Gabriel Bortoleto.

00:09:27But Hülkenberg gets the place back again.

00:09:29Salva and Aston Martin scrapping wheel-to-wheel in these opening stages.

00:09:34Wow, that's such a brilliant fight to watch.

00:09:36Always these two cars wide, you know, through these long corners.

00:09:39Because on the inside you have the guy in front,

00:09:41so you lose so much downforce from the turbulence.

00:09:44And that's why the outside can work beautifully,

00:09:46as Alonso just showed there.

00:09:47So we're on board with Fernando Alonso, he's down in 11th place.

00:09:50His Spanish compatriot Carlos Sainz might have a bit of damage on the front-right side of his Williams.

00:09:55We'll get a replay of the starts in a moment.

00:09:58But Alonso has got a lot of work to do this afternoon.

00:10:02Out in front, Oscar Piastri is not exactly disappearing into the distance.

00:10:06DRS is enabled now.

00:10:08And Max Verstappen is well within a second of our race leader.

00:10:12Lando Norris has dropped back just a little bit.

00:10:15He's lost nine tenths to Verstappen on lap two of this race.

00:10:19There, Verstappen just has a little look on Oscar Piastri,

00:10:22just to remind the Australian that he's there.

00:10:24Wow, Max is fast. He's very fast.

00:10:27But he has to be so careful because they're on the soft tyre.

00:10:30He needs to really judge it well now.

00:10:32When do I push Oscar Piastri?

00:10:34Should I wait a little bit, hang back, and not destroy my tyres?

00:10:37Or should I go now as hard as I can and try and jump in front?

00:10:40It's a very difficult decision for him to make.

00:10:42I asked around, I said, what's the perfect strategy here if you're stuck behind another car?

00:10:46And it was strategy one, try and overtake.

00:10:48Strategy two, try and force the driver ahead into pushing a bit harder than he really wants to.

00:10:54And if that all fails, quickly drop back about three, three and a half seconds behind the car in front.

00:11:00Otherwise, your tyres are going to get chewed up.

00:11:02Yeah, I don't think so.

00:11:03I think at the moment, it's really, Verstappen can't pass Piastri on race pace right now.

00:11:08The moving and the braking today, what's going on?

00:11:11George, concentrate.

00:11:13Flustered.

00:11:14Wow, Toto himself coming on.

00:11:16Yeah, really flustered George Russell there.

00:11:19And I wonder if Verstappen is going to need to start dropping back a bit.

00:11:23And he's lost seven tenths to Oscar Piastri in the middle sector of this current lap.

00:11:27It's not realistic to pass Piastri now.

00:11:28He needs to just stay very close, drop back, manage those tyres.

00:11:32If the end of the stint, when Piastri's tyres drop out, that's where his opportunity can come potentially.

00:11:37That might be the best one.

00:11:38So, in single file, they stream over the line once again.

00:11:43And the gap that was six tenths of a second between Piastri and Verstappen with the fastest lap of the race.

00:11:48Piastri's extended to a second and a half.

00:11:50Hadja and Gasly.

00:11:52I wonder if they were talking about this race last night while they were watching their team win 5-0.

00:11:56Maybe, maybe not.

00:11:58They're certainly enjoying themselves out there and having a right old ding-dong.

00:12:02Just a few car lengths in it.

00:12:04And Oscar Piastri just keeps pulling out to maybe try and go for a gap.

00:12:08And a gap that isn't quite there.

00:12:10Currently going very wide there.

00:12:12Nico Hülkenberg behind the racing foot.

00:12:14No, so what they're doing is they're offsetting each other from the car in front to avoid the turbulence.

00:12:19Because even if maybe out wide there's a little bit of marbles, it's still much more grip if you're away from that turbulence from the car in front.

00:12:25That's why they're doing different lines there.

00:12:27Hülkenberg is only finished higher than 10th once here in 11 Grand Prix starts.

00:12:32He was 6th in 2017 for Force India.

00:12:34Currently the last driver in the top 10 spots.

00:12:38But it's Oscar Piastri who had to play second fiddle to his teammate in Monaco last time out.

00:12:43Who has now a two-second advantage over Max Verstappen.

00:12:47Lando Norris with Lewis Hamilton a second back.

00:12:50Currently riding in third.

00:12:51Charles Leclerc sitting about a second behind his teammate.

00:12:55Currently in fifth.

00:12:56George Russell on the last lap.

00:12:58Round about four-tenths of a second slower than Charles Leclerc.

00:13:03He's dropping back a bit.

00:13:04Antonelli is in seventh place.

00:13:06Then comes Gasly.

00:13:07Then Hülkenberg.

00:13:09Who's a bit closer now to Hülkenberg than Hülkenberg is to Pierre Gasly.

00:13:14Yuki Tsunoda on the medium tyre.

00:13:16It's still plumb last in this race.

00:13:17And this was the start.

00:13:18They were not held for very long.

00:13:20And Piastri, great start.

00:13:22And I tell you what, Antonelli had to move over, didn't he?

00:13:25Because Charles Leclerc was coming through.

00:13:26That was so close to a crash.

00:13:28Because Lewis had a bad start.

00:13:29Pulled over and almost squashed Leclerc between Antonelli and himself.

00:13:34That was very, very close.

00:13:35And there we see Antonelli bailing out.

00:13:37And there we see Bortoletto and Hülkenberg.

00:13:39And also Carlos Sainz, I think, bailing out as well into that escape road.

00:13:45It's all settled down a bit.

00:13:48How can George lose that position to Leclerc when he was uncomfortable there?

00:13:51Well, he lost the position to Leclerc later on.

00:13:53I know, I know.

00:13:54But he was in such a comfortable position, actually.

00:13:56Not great that he lost that position afterwards.

00:13:58And this was where Lando Norris lost the position to Max Verstappen.

00:14:01He was playing the championship game there.

00:14:03He has to be careful.

00:14:05He cannot afford to lose points in a crash to Oscar Piastri.

00:14:08And he knows Max Verstappen is not going to give way.

00:14:11So it's either you're careful or you might crash.

00:14:15This was Lewis Hamilton's start.

00:14:16There's his teammate, Charles Leclerc, coming at him.

00:14:20Then Lewis picks up the slipstream.

00:14:22And ahead of him, opportunities open up.

00:14:25Dances around the outside.

00:14:26Very neat.

00:14:27That's the moment where in the helmet you're like, yes!

00:14:31That was awesome.

00:14:33I'm sure.

00:14:34Nico Hülkenberg's been noted for leaving the track and gaining an advantage, by the way.

00:14:38This is Liam Lawson.

00:14:40And I think that is where Fernando Alonso got hit by the racing bulls.

00:14:46Now we can ride on board with Hülkenberg and see what he did at the start.

00:14:51He probably benefited from that collision right ahead of him, right?

00:14:54Yeah.

00:14:54And some person on the left almost got shunted as well.

00:14:58Wow!

00:14:59How did he make up so many places?

00:15:02Oh, so it's Albon on the left who has to do avoiding action.

00:15:08That definitely cost Alex.

00:15:09Oh my goodness, his front wing is damaged.

00:15:11Yeah, that is a not so rigid front wing on the Williams there.

00:15:19And Franco Colapinto, I think, has been on the team radio to complain about those incidents as well.

00:15:25There were drivers leaving the track.

00:15:26They might have gained an advantage, but they went down the escape route and they did everything that they were meant to do.

00:15:31Yeah, I think it looked fine overall.

00:15:33Do you know who's struggling a little bit at the moment is Lewis.

00:15:35And Charles looks extremely quick at this point in time of the race.

00:15:39Williams telling out Alex Albon to box.

00:15:43DRS here for Charles Leclerc.

00:15:45He's coming at Lewis.

00:15:46Is Lewis going to defend this too eagerly?

00:15:48He is, you know.

00:15:49He's not letting Charles Leclerc past.

00:15:52And Ferrari in a situation this afternoon where later in the race, Charles Leclerc with two new sets of medium tyres should be the faster Ferrari because of that tyre advantage.

00:16:02Is it worth Ferrari playing the strategy game here and saying, Lewis, let him go through?

00:16:07I tell you what, if I was Lewis' engineer now, I would say, Lewis, give it everything.

00:16:11Pick up that pace because otherwise that call is going to come very soon.

00:16:15Let your teammate buy for a chance to get a podium.

00:16:18So as Alex Albon with the damage in the Williams and stops there to replace his front wing back into this race,

00:16:27really not going according to plan for Alex Albon and Mr. Chunk of Time in FP2.

00:16:31You didn't do FP1 because Victor Martins was in his car.

00:16:35We can push on these tyres now.

00:16:37They're up to 10.

00:16:38We want to try and pass this happen.

00:16:40So let me explain that for you.

00:16:41In the first two laps, that's when the temperatures shoot up from being in a cold condition.

00:16:47And they shoot over the ideal temperature.

00:16:50And it's in that peak where you create the most damage.

00:16:53And so that's why in these first couple of four, five, six laps, you want to manage that peak and not, like, create unnecessary damage.

00:17:01And as the engineers see the temperature, and in the car you see it as well, the temperature tyres coming down again,

00:17:06then you can start to push a bit more.

00:17:08And we're seeing the pressure that Leclerc is putting here on Lewis.

00:17:10I just saw Lewis in turn seven.

00:17:12He's really struggling with the rear end.

00:17:14Look at that rear end moving all the time.

00:17:16It's just snapping and snapping and snapping.

00:17:18He's just really uncomfortable in that car.

00:17:20Really not good to see.

00:17:21I don't know what's going on.

00:17:22I mean, that's not normal that Leclerc can follow so closely.

00:17:26Well, at this stage, Charles Leclerc is getting close enough to Lewis Hamilton to shout out,

00:17:33I want to come past.

00:17:34Into turn five we go.

00:17:36No gap appearing as yet.

00:17:39We'll get DRS in a few corners' time to try and make a move into turn 10 if he's close enough.

00:17:44But unfortunately, the team has to do it soon, because Charles, with the new tyre and the pace,

00:17:50he has a small chance of maybe keeping up with the guys in front.

00:17:55And so I guess, unfortunately, they have to do it pretty soon.

00:17:57Well, it's those two new sets of medium tyres that are going to pay dividends for Charles Leclerc later in this race.

00:18:01And now they've cleared Mercedes-Ferrari in a much stronger position than they thought they might be in the opening stages of this race.

00:18:08A race, Bernie Collins, I'm told, is a tyre temperature race as well, with the engineers watching how hot or cold those tyres are getting.

00:18:17Yes, exactly, Crofty.

00:18:18And I don't know if it's ultimately about the tyres or about something else, but Leclerc has been told he needs more lift and coast for tyres.

00:18:25For exactly that reason, to bring the temperature down, to pick up on Nico's point.

00:18:29Hamilton is...

00:18:30He's going for it, Bernie.

00:18:31I'll interrupt you for two seconds.

00:18:32Charles Leclerc trying to get past Lewis Hamilton into turn one.

00:18:36Nothing doing.

00:18:37And Nico Rosberg's shaking his head alongside me.

00:18:40No, I mean, I'm shaking my head because Lewis is one second a lap slower at the moment.

00:18:45Said Norris.

00:18:46Yeah, so unfortunately, they just have to swap and give Leclerc a chance.

00:18:50If it doesn't work out, you can always kind of swap back later or something.

00:18:53But it's not nice to say it, but that's the way it is at the moment.

00:18:57Bernie, back to you.

00:18:58Yeah, I was just going to say, Lewis Hamilton will be given an engine brake and change.

00:19:01So that's to help the stability of the rear of that car, which Nico picked up on.

00:19:05Thanks ever so much indeed.

00:19:06Yuki Tsunoda pitting early to get rid of his medium compound tyre.

00:19:11And also Oli Baerman coming in for an early stop too.

00:19:15So Albon moves ahead and into 18th place.

00:19:19And the rest of the top 10 stay as they are.

00:19:21And Nico Hülkenberg can breathe a bit more easily because the stewards have said no further investigation

00:19:25for when he left the track and allegedly gained an advantage.

00:19:29And finally, Ferrari are saying swap positions with Charles Leclerc.

00:19:34Yeah, I mean, I know that they have the Sky feed on their pit wall.

00:19:38So they were listening in on our advice and, of course, made the call.

00:19:43But you realize someone's going to take that seriously there.

00:19:45Can I just say also this is horrible for Lewis in this situation?

00:19:49You're in that car.

00:19:51It sucks so much.

00:19:53It's so horrible that you have to wave your teammate past.

00:19:57It's like he's the seven-time world champion.

00:19:59He's the greatest.

00:20:00And here he is waving this young teammate by.

00:20:03That's not fun.

00:20:04No, it's not fun at all for the team.

00:20:07I think it's the right decision at this time.

00:20:09Hülkenberg now comes into the pit.

00:20:12These are early stops.

00:20:13The pit window open.

00:20:15But these are early stops in the race.

00:20:17If it's a two-stop strategy, they're going to have to...

00:20:20They are going to have to make those medium tyres run a bit longer,

00:20:24I think, than they were originally intended.

00:20:26Carlos Sainz into the pits.

00:20:28And there may be a little bit of damage on that Sainz-Williams

00:20:32because that's a very long pit stop.

00:20:33He was stationary for 11 seconds.

00:20:35I think they swapped the front wing.

00:20:36I couldn't really see that.

00:20:37But I think maybe it wasn't Algon's front wing

00:20:40and it was Sainz's front wing.

00:20:43There is Max Verstappen.
