It is still unknown how long Erla Harewood-Chrisopher will remain at the helm of the Police Service, having been reinstated mere days before the end of her term. However the Police Association is asking the powers-that-be not to scrap the existing merit list. Rynessa Cutting has more.

00:00Herwood Christopher is back as police commissioner, but how long she will hold the post is still unknown at this time.
00:08Whether it be for one more day, three more days, or one more year, she is the person who holds the substantive rank.
00:16In that instance, Mr. Benjamin, who was acting, would have to revert to his deputy commissioner of police.
00:24And the law is quite clear that acting is not a prelude to confirmation in a particular post.
00:32And Mr. Benjamin, I'm also aware it's quite professional and understand.
00:37Her return comes as the selection process for police commissioner was in progress.
00:43However, there is a possibility that Mrs. Herwood Christopher's contract can be renewed for another year.
00:48So that is something that the association would welcome.
00:51Again, the reality of the situation is that the commissioner would have served her term, would have been placed on a contract and got an extension of her term in office.
01:04And at the end of the day, all things have to come to an end, whether it is now or a year from now.
01:11All things have to come to an end.
01:13And as a responsible country or a responsible service commission, I would think that you wouldn't wait until a contract comes to an end before you start to look for candidates.
01:23In this regard, the association is asking that the existing merit list not be scrapped.
01:29Let the person who is who finished first in the process be afforded the opportunity because they'd have met all the relevant threshold that was set there.
01:41And they would have competed in an open market against their peers and others and finish at the top of the process.
01:50So they should be given the opportunity to be in charge of the organization.
