00:01:14Now tonight, as we prepare to lose another favorite on our result show,
00:01:18we want to take this opportunity to give you some background on the talent we have squaring off on the floor this season.
00:01:24We've asked the judges to pick the pivotal dances of our All-Stars from their past seasons.
00:01:29While these are not necessarily their best dances, they do depict the qualities that best define the characters that had an impact on our show.
00:01:37So we'll also get the behind-the-scenes perspective of our stars as they comment on their routines.
00:01:42Up first, Len analyzes the unforgettable performance of our first-ever champion, Kelly Monaco.
00:01:49It definitely shows her calm under the pressure of live TV.
00:01:54Kelly Monaco's defining dance was the Samba. The Lean Green Dancing Machine, out she came.
00:02:04Lots of hip, full of rhythm, and then the first-ever wardrobe malfunction.
00:02:10She had to continue the dance, holding up her dress. Fast spins, lots of movement. It was incredible.
00:02:18The Samba turned Kelly Monaco from a pretender to a contender, and she went on to win season one.
00:02:26Before the countdown started, my first drop broke. Holy crap. I'm like, Alec, what am I supposed to do?
00:02:32And I was like, I don't know. Just keep going.

00:02:41There was like a five-second delay. I knew that. But yeah, I wasn't like, we stopped. No, you can't stop.

00:04:14I saw Carrie Ann stand up, I think, I remember, and I'm like, oh my God, she's finally nice.
00:04:23You know, one of the secrets to Dancing with the Stars is overcoming adversity.
00:04:27For the celebrities, it's a challenge just to dance a routine.
00:04:32To have a wardrobe malfunction and still have to continue keeping right on time, dancing fast, clear, and clean.
00:04:42Kelly did an incredible job, and she was rewarded with her highest score of the season.
00:04:48And now, seven years later, we're already seeing a huge improvement with Kelly's performances.
00:04:55Week one, All-Star season, Kelly came out with a bang in her cha-cha-cha, and last night, her quick step, amazing and full of surprises.
00:05:05This season, as we've seen, Kelly's dancing at a much higher standard than previously.
00:05:10Now, Kelly just has to continue coming out stronger and stronger with each dance, with that fighting spirit and humor that America fell in love with in season one.
00:05:21Woo-hoo-hoo, Kelly Monaco.
00:05:24Go on, girl.
00:05:25All right, that's what Len had to say about our first champion.
00:05:32Next up, it's the star who took home a mirror ball in season two.
00:05:36This is what Len considers a turning point for Drew Lachey as he headed into the home stretch of his competition.
00:05:47Drew Lachey's defining dance was his week six tango.
00:05:51Shut up.
00:05:52Certain dances suit certain people, and for Drew Lachey, the tango was the perfect dance.
00:05:59It had aggression.
00:06:00It had passion.
00:06:01It had control.
00:06:03Great hold.
00:06:04Good posture.
00:06:05And fantastic choreography.
00:06:08He came out, and he just wowed me.
00:06:10We had a completely different routine that we didn't like that we ended up scrapping.
00:06:14And in two days, we put together the routine that you're about to see.
00:06:18Dancing the tango, Drew Lachey and his partner, Cheryl Burke.
00:06:23So right now, I'm freaking out because I'm wearing the Latin heels, and I'm about to walk down the stairs, and I am freaking out that I am going to trip and fall down the stairs.
00:06:33Being a shorter guy, I was really scared for that step right there, because, you know, one fell, missed kick, and I'm done for.
00:06:46Just shut up, shut up.
00:06:47Oh, no.
00:06:48Shut up.

00:06:51We try to take it slow, but we're still losing control.
00:06:55And we try to make it work, but it still ends up the worst.
00:06:59And I'm crazy.
00:07:02We're trying to feel that he died.
00:07:05I think I'm going crazy.
00:07:07And there was a lot going on.
00:07:09I mean, the adjusting of the shoes, and my feet were killing me, and just the stress of the season.
00:07:13I mean, this was week six, so we had been going nonstop for six weeks, and everybody was on edge, not knowing if they were going to go home the next week.
00:07:21So for us to not have a routine that we had been working on the entire week, to have four or five days to work on literally just two, we were very, very nervous going into that week.
00:07:31And who is she?
00:07:32How could you trust your private lives, girl?
00:07:33That's why you don't believe my lies and quit this lecture.
00:07:36Just shut up, shut up.

00:07:39We try to take it slow, but we're still losing control.

00:08:05Now, coming up is my favorite move of this entire dance.
00:08:08It doesn't seem like much, but it just embraced the entire mood of this dance.

00:08:16Yep, best move in the entire dance.
00:08:22What was incredible, we knew that Drew Lachey was a showman.
00:08:26But he put this tango together with all the show, but all the flair and all the technique.
00:08:33I'll tell you what, it was fantastic.
00:08:35However, it must have been a blow for Drew to find himself in the bottom two last week.
00:08:40Because Drew is a really good dancer, there's no question.
00:08:44Hopefully, the fact that Drew was in the bottom two last week will wake up the fans and remind them to vote.
00:08:51Because every vote counts.
00:08:54Now, all Drew needs to do is combine his natural showmanship with great technique, and we'll start to see him rise.

00:09:36We are getting ready for tonight's elimination with this exclusive look at the routines the judges have chosen
00:09:41as the dances that defined our All-Stars during their past seasons.
00:09:45Let's get back to it.
00:09:46With season three champion Emmett Smith and a dance that Carrie Ann chose as the first example of his natural talent and charisma.
00:09:58Emmett Smith's defining dance was his week one cha-cha to Son of a Preacher Man.
00:10:03This is Emmett's first dance of the season and the very first dance of the entire night.
00:10:08Right off the bat, Emmett blows us away.
00:10:10He shows us a side of himself that we have never seen before.
00:10:13With this dance, Emmett set the bar for the season.
00:10:15Dancing the cha-cha-cha, Emmett Smith and his partner Cheryl Byrne.
00:10:20Not knowing what to expect first time on the show, yes, I was a little nervous.
00:10:31We were adding a little bit of element of who I am, my culture, pop dance and pop locking, doing the wave.
00:10:38And now we get into the cha-cha itself, having a little bit of fun.
00:10:49I mean, this was my first time in this setting.
00:10:54First time dancing in front of America itself, not knowing what to expect.
00:11:00One of the best things about Emmett is he makes everything look effortless.
00:11:19Well, that was my little element right there.
00:11:43I added that little arm wave in.
00:11:46That's my little signature moment right there.
00:11:48My wife loved it.
00:11:49Oh my gosh, I was happy to be done.
00:11:52Having season three under my belt and having that experience itself helps me now.
00:11:57But I'm still as nervous.
00:12:00Remember, this was week one, so Emmett was not perfect technically.
00:12:04But he brought this natural charisma and incredible rhythm that no one in the season was ever able to match.
00:12:11If Emmett can continue to bring that charisma and rhythm that comes so naturally for him, he could be the one to win it.
00:12:22Carrie Ann picked Emmett's debut cha-cha as his defining dance.
00:12:26Next up, the star who was eliminated on week six of season five.
00:12:31Your votes brought her back to compete as an all-star.
00:12:34Here's Len's take on a dance that shows why it was such a surprise when Sabrina Bryan left the competition.
00:12:44The greatest shock ever on Dancing with the Stars was Sabrina Bryan exiting the competition.
00:12:53Sabrina and Mark.
00:12:55For me, she was nailed on to be in the final.
00:12:58And suddenly, she was gone.
00:13:01This girl's not going to let this happen twice, I'm sure.
00:13:04Of all of our celebrities, Sabrina Bryan is one of the few that has very few weaknesses.
00:13:10Sabrina Bryan's defining dance was the Paso Doble.
00:13:14If you want action, speed, flair, controlled aggression, this is the Paso Doble to watch.
00:13:22Dancing the Paso Doble, Sabrina Bryan and her partner, Mark Ballas.
00:13:26Mark actually ended up re-choreographing our Paso a good three to four times.
00:13:31He just felt like it just could be better.
00:13:41This part right here was my favorite part.
00:13:43I loved whipping that skirt around.
00:13:45It was so heavy, but the material was awesome.
00:13:48You just grasp on it.
00:13:49This is one of Mark and I's signature moves.
00:14:16He clocked me in the head so many times with that foot kicking over because I was not going
00:14:22down low enough, but it was awesome.
00:14:26You spin me right round, baby, right round.
00:14:30I was just getting choreography mixed up at one point.
00:14:33And luckily, like the night before, we really went over what the set choreography was.
00:14:39It made nailing it that much better.
00:14:45Thank heaven that the fans brought Sabrina Bryan back because she deserves more than anyone
00:14:54a second chance.
00:14:55And after five years, Sabrina is already exceeding our highest expectations, as we've seen with
00:15:03her week one cha-cha-cha and her week two quick step.
00:15:06And hopefully, she'll start to tame that natural cheetah girl aggression just a tad by delivering
00:15:12more controlled but still strong performances.
00:15:16Watch out.

00:16:41It was with this movie-inspired tango that we saw Joey Patone as the showman at his best.
00:16:48Joey, the Jedi Knight.
00:16:50Kim, Princess Leia.
00:16:52Only Joey could pull that off.
00:16:54I'm a huge Star Wars fan.
00:16:56And I love to incorporate soundtracks from movies.
00:16:59That's one of my things.
00:17:00Dancing the tango, Joey Patone and his partner, Kim Johnson.
00:17:05It felt awesome for me to stand there with that cloak and all of a sudden have that noise,
00:17:09that light say like, oh yeah, I'm a freaking Jedi.
00:17:12You know, it was just kind of fun.
00:17:30It's just kind of that role-playing thing of childhood dream to be able to perform something like that.
00:17:34And it's different because, of course, it was a tango.
00:17:37And, you know, you go from being that Jedi Knight to the sophisticated dancer Jedi Knight.
00:17:43A lot of posture.
00:18:08I remember being so sore from holding this because you're gliding across the floor and doing all these kind of things.
00:18:15It definitely was one of the hardest performances.
00:18:18It's crazy because the ending, I goofed up and I had to switch it around.
00:18:29So as you can see, actually the way I was supposed to be standing was a different way.
00:18:33And you see how quick I moved.
00:18:35I'm like, I did it.
00:18:37I did it wrong though too, but we faked it.
00:18:40Nobody ever really knew.
00:18:42The Star Wars tango may not have been technically his best dance,
00:18:45but as showmanship goes, unbeatable.
00:18:49The dangers when you're so committed to performance and characterization,
00:18:53sometimes you can stray away from the brief.
00:18:56So remember, Joy, as we've seen from you so far in season 15,
00:19:00with your week one cha-cha-cha and your week two quick step,
00:19:03keep the technique and keep the refinement,
00:19:05but don't lose the performance.

00:19:17the ultimate champion of season four, Apollo Anton Ono,

00:19:26Apollo Ono's defining dance was his week five samba.
00:19:31I like to move it, move it.
00:19:33And I tell you what, he moved it plenty.
00:19:36No fillers, no unnecessary messing about, just straight into a samba.
00:19:42And whoa, what a samba.
00:19:45Full, great hips, great movement, full of rhythm.
00:19:49What a dance.
00:19:51Apollo, I salute you.
00:19:54Dancing the samba, Apollo Anton Ono and his partner, Julianne Hough.
00:20:00I'm so nervous for this dance.
00:20:01It might not show it, but I'm so incredibly nervous.
00:20:04There's leopard print on my elbows, as I'll point that out.

00:20:09So here, I'm slowly focusing on my hips.

00:20:13Although, it's probably more looking at Julianne or anything, in a little outfit.

00:21:40I love the song, we rehearsed it like crazy, and for us it was that changing point in the show where we were taking it to a different level, and I think that was our first triple ten.
00:21:53Apollo Arno, the intense athlete that turned himself into a great entertainer, what a formidable combination.
00:22:01If Apollo can balance that laser focus, that sportsman's will to win, with great entertainment, what else do you want? He's there.

00:25:18In fact week one if you remember we saw Hellyeo getting a standing ovation before it even took
00:25:24took one step onto the dance floor
00:25:26and continued to blow us away with his week two jive.
00:25:30Now, if Helio can bring me the standard that he showed in season five
00:25:34to all of his dances this season, watch out.
00:25:38This is a one-horse race.
00:25:43From the champion of season five, we go to season eight,
00:25:46which saw our closest ever finals.
00:25:48Here's the energetic routine Bruno picked as the dance
00:25:51that propelled Melissa Rycroft to the next level.
00:25:54Melissa Rycroft, week four, Lindy Hop.
00:26:01She danced to Brown Derby Jump.
00:26:03Melissa's Lindy Hop was full of energy, full of flair, and full of excitement.
00:26:09It was incredibly fun, fast-paced, and sharp from beginning to end.
00:26:13Not an easy thing to do, but Melissa nailed it.
00:26:17It was with this Lindy Hop that Melissa got the nearly perfect score of 29,
00:26:22a turning point for her.
00:26:23Dancing the Lindy Hop, Melissa Rycroft and her partner Tony DiBolani.
00:26:29This Lindy Hop was the most energetic dance that we did all season.
00:26:32Between the lifts and the fast movement, you can't catch your breath.
00:26:36I remember sitting there before the dance started, just go ahead and take your time.
00:26:40Take a deep breath, because you're not getting another one.
00:26:45Jump!
00:26:46Jump, jump, jump!
00:26:48The lifts were really fun.
00:26:51Tony has this ability of just kind of throwing me up, and right there.
00:26:55And right there.

00:26:57She was a woman of mystery, and what she wanted I could not see.
00:27:06A three-year trip on the back, until the clinic had to get me clean.
00:27:10It's funny watching it back.
00:27:12It doesn't look like it should get me as out of breath as it did.
00:27:16But when I look at it, we don't stop moving.
00:27:19We don't stop bouncing, kicking, lifting.
00:27:21I mean, it's constant.
00:27:23Jump, jump, jump!
00:27:35This is the big move that's about to come up, and I was taking a deep breath.
00:27:38When I flew up over Tony's back, I knocked the air out of myself every time.
00:27:43And we were just holding our breath, that right here, we would nail it.
00:27:46And you can actually see the strain, Tony getting me up, and just pure happiness.
00:27:52We did it.
00:27:52We do the job.
00:27:57Everybody do the job.
00:28:06Now remember, Melissa entered the competition with only two days to prepare.
00:28:11In this season, as we've already seen week to week,
00:28:14you've got to make every single dance count, because it may just be your last.
00:28:18Melissa is not taking any dance for granted, which is what every celebrity needs to do this season.
00:28:25What is so special about Melissa is when she's faced with challenging situations and very difficult choreography.
00:28:31She delivers.
00:28:32Melissa's co-finalist, Gilles Marini, went head-to-head with the season's ultimate champion
00:28:40and missed out on the mirror ball by a margin of less than 1%.
00:28:44Here's the routine Carrie Ann picked to show the qualities that made him a memorable competitor.
00:28:49Gilles Marini's defining dance was his week four Argentine tango to Assassin's tango.
00:28:57What's so special about Gilles is his movie star good looks, his posture, and his attention to detail.
00:29:03Basically, this Argentine tango is as good as it gets.
00:29:07Dancing the Argentine tango, Gilles Marini and his partner Cheryl Burke.
00:29:11My heart was beating so hard.
00:29:13I want to tell you one thing fun.
00:29:19I actually had a cramp at this moment.
00:29:23Wait a minute.
00:29:26Okay.
00:29:27And here I cramped my left pec.
00:29:31So weird, right?
00:29:32I cramped it and probably gave me even more like not happiest emotion when it came down to the dance,
00:29:39but I cramped the middle of the dance.
00:29:43During a lively dance, obviously, you have a lot of people going crazy and clapping and cheering for you,
00:30:10and it's incredible.
00:30:11And it's the first time and the last time I experienced a dance where Gilles kind of captured the attention
00:30:16of the entire 800 people there, and it was completely silent.
00:30:21The Argentine tango was Gilles' first perfect score of the season, and without a doubt, one of his best performances ever.
00:30:44The danger of being a perfectionist is that things can become forced and unnatural.
00:30:49So as long as Gilles can stay committed and connected, he could be one of the last ones standing.
00:30:53That was the judges' pick for the defining dance of Gilles, but what about his closest rival?
00:31:00We'll see which of Shawn Johnson's routines sent her to contender status when we come back.

00:32:34Right here, I'm walking across the floor, and it looks like it would be the easiest part of the dance,
00:32:38but for me, it was the absolute hardest, because I was alone, I had to be sexy, I didn't have Mark,
00:32:43I didn't have fancy dance moves to cover me up, and it was terrifying.
00:32:47I was traveling all week, so we didn't have a lot of rehearsal time.
00:33:01I was really stressed out, I was afraid I wasn't going to remember it.
00:33:04We were doing, like, midnight sessions.
00:33:06It was pretty intense, so going out there, I was just hoping I wouldn't forget it,
00:33:11or, you know, stop in the middle of the floor, and kind of just put it all aside and let go.
00:33:15Being such an iconic song, and being Michael Jackson, it was just, it was so much fun,
00:33:43and Mark kept telling me over and over again,
00:33:45you have to sell it, you have to be sexy, and I finally just was like, ugh, fine, I'll try,
00:33:50and so I kind of just let it go, had fun, and I did.
00:33:54When I landed at the end, my head just, like, dropped back in relief,
00:34:07and it was kind of, I was so happy I didn't forget it or mess up, and the crowd, they gave me a standing ovation.
00:34:13It was just kind of a big sigh of relief, because I feel like I had kind of gone to the next step.
00:34:18Timing is everything.
00:34:20Shawn blossomed at the right time, and it all came together.
00:34:23So Shawn can bring this sexy, fun attitude that we see here,
00:34:26and mix it with that natural power and strength that she has.
00:34:29She'll be a huge contender this season.
