00:00Sixes we're almost nine tenths of a second faster than we were this time last year for the final part of qualifying for the sprint
00:06I think that absolutely confirms Mercedes
00:09Maybe they're running a bit lower. You don't go as far in the sprint
00:12You don't put anything like as much fuel on board, but whatever they've done
00:15The tires are hanging on in that Mercedes for the whole lap. It's fast
00:20Yeah, and he went over the curb a bit there George Russell didn't seem to slow him down too much
00:25Let's see how far over didn't exceed track limits. Did what Alex Albon did an sq2
00:31Front wheels are off the ground at one point there
00:33And yet still produced the fastest time Alex Albon saying
00:38Something not legal about that Mercedes car. Maybe they are running it a bit lower ted down to you
00:44And I think i'm just wondering whether max Verstappen's gone too soon here crofty
00:48We're all expecting mclaren not least the sprint qualifying
00:52Poll time to be well into the one twenty sixes a one twenty six seven is about right
00:58I think mclaren could probably lower that by a tenth or two
01:02But what's Verstappen gonna do here?
01:03He's only got the one set and they're gone now aren't they crofty? Yeah, so
01:08I mean, I know I know with the benefit what you're saying
01:11But that's it. I think maybe they would have been better served to wait
01:13What's one twenty seven zero is going to be beaten by quite a few people?
01:17I think well what i'm hearing from
01:19Anthony at the sky pad is just had a quick look back at the Verstappen lap on board
01:23Is that he missed the apex at turn eight and lost a bit of time on that particular left-hander?
01:29Quick reminder if you want to ride on board you can do you need your sky sports app and your sky sports login
01:35Or press the interactive button on your remote control if you're watching on sky cube sky glass sky stream or now
01:42So as soon as you cross the beam at the end of the pit lane those tires are registered as having been used
01:49out on track
01:51But that's slightly irrelevant right now. It's all about getting one hot lap in
01:57And they've left themselves a lot of work to do in the last two and a quarter minutes, haven't they?
02:03We've only got two times on the board out of 10 drivers
02:08So only two sprint poles for mercedes in their history and they both
02:14Came in 2021 lewis hamilton at silverstone for the first ever sprint voucher botas at monza
02:23Could they be about to add a third to their tally here with george russell?
02:28Nearly three tenths up on max verstappen, but we wait to see what the claren what the second mercedes of antonelli
02:36Ferraris of mclaren hamilton williams of albon the aston martin of alonso and the racing balls of hadja have to offer
02:43Verstappen still going round again now so nine
02:47Of the ten cars out on track at the moment and they're all quite nicely spaced out
02:52So george russell has pitted that is his flying lap his one and only flying lap in the final part of qualifying
02:58He sits on top of the pile on provisional pole
03:02And he's gonna have to sit and wait it out in the garage to see
03:07If there's any chance of keeping that or if someone can take it away from him
03:12I think verstappen is carrying on for another cool down lap
03:15So getting his tire temperatures down and trying to go for it again and his battery fully charged
03:22And the temperature therefore the pressures come down you get a little bit more traction like that
03:27But he's already
03:28Taking some energy out of that brand new rubber has max verstappen missed sq3 last year george russell sitting on provisional pole in
03:372025 and waiting with baited breath starting his final flying lap the man who was on pole in
03:43Shanghai for the previous sprint race this season and that's lewis hamilton we can take you through this lap relentless, isn't it?
03:50Just relentless through that part
03:52of the lap
03:54This is 150 miles an hour
03:57And then the long seven and eight and eight nips at the end this is where you run up against the curb on the outside
04:04acceleration
04:06supremely important there because in a road car through here scary in a formula one car it's really doing nothing
04:13So it's a straight line effectively with a big stop at the end where we saw carlos signs lock up his brakes
04:19And it's a great first sector time for lewis hamilton max verstappen out there going very well in the first sector as well
04:28And uh now we've got a little left into that tricky off camber chicane
04:33Then up against the wall turn 16 for the long run down
04:37You don't it's so long this way you don't get drs until quite a long way down there
04:41We'll see the board coming up soon there
04:44It is get the rear wing open stay on the right hand side
04:48Maximum pressure into the brake pedal without locking the front axle get off the brakes all the down shifts done
04:54Sweep the wheel and pick up the throttle floor
04:57Just keep going up through the gears keep it a little bit right through the exit for a short run to the line
05:04And hamilton goes p2
05:06But max verstappen is in contention to go p1 once again and kimmy antonelli is flying through the middle part of the lap
05:13Verstappen goes back on the pole he needed a second lap by five one hundredths of a second
05:18He is on provisional pole here goes antonelli and for the first time in his formula one career in any format
05:25Kimmy antonelli has taken pole position, but it's only provisional
05:30Lando norris can nick it. He's a tenth off. It's a front row for lando norris, but here comes oscar piastri to the line
05:38Oh, it's the front row for oscar piastri
05:41Kimmy antonelli is standing at the top of the pile as leclerc goes over the line to finish p6
05:49And hajar makes it p9. It's a round of applause. It is a maiden pole position for kimmy antonelli
05:58Just 18 years of age and no wonder toto wolf is smiling
06:03Drafted into the matades team and he fags his first pole
06:08Tremendous what an effort from such a young driver with so little experience and no experience here
06:15Other than on the simulator and he's gone out and smashed a lap in george russell starts p5
06:22But that's an outstanding effort from the teenager and no wonder mercedes they saw him many years ago
06:30They've nurtured him. They've cared for him. They've protected him when he smashed the car to bits in monza as a practice
06:37Free practice one driver and here is delivering for them. That's sensational
06:42We often talk about the rookie era. This is the rookie era. Kimmy antonelli
06:49By four one hundredths of a second beats oscar piastri to pole
06:55Yes, mate
06:57That's p1
06:59Yes, yes, mate. Go on. Go on. Well done, lad, huh?
07:05Not bad, not bad
07:08I think we're going somewhere. Kimmy you're not on Andrea today
07:13I definitely not
07:14Bono's used to saying that to his there's bono's used to saying that to his driver isn't he so many years with lewis hamilton
07:24And uh, yeah, how satisfied is he going to be with that?
07:28He's party trick. Kimmy antonelli is memorizing his lap times during his racing career
07:33One twenty six four eight two. He is never going to forget this one. How does that feel then?
07:38It feels mega
07:41And george russell who at one stage was on provisional pole ended up fifth fastest
07:46He was sat waiting didn't go out for a second lap and sat waiting as he tumbled down the order
07:52Kimmy antonelli is the youngest pole sitter in any race format in formula one history
07:58Previous best was sebastian fettel, but he's beaten that by over two and a half years. Wow. He went nothing with kids
08:07And uh, yeah, the tinder we were talking about that went out early verstappen and russell didn't didn't didn't gain from that
08:13They lost out by as they start fourth and fifth. They uh, definitely missed the best of the racetrack
08:19And well, but antonelli just nailed it together, but I just sensed mercedes are back in business here
08:27It full stop. Yeah, actually
08:30Wow, well, well beat sebastian fettel's record by two and a half years the man that's his dad there isn't it
08:36Yeah, uh, who knows a thing or two about racing has his own sports car team
08:41uh, does antonelli senior
08:43Uh, yeah beat sebastian fettel's record kimmy antonelli by the way born on the day that sebastian fettel
08:49First appeared in an fp1 practice session
08:52Friday practice turkey 2006 we can just about remember that this is it's a brilliant effort
09:00And a track he's never been at before at a street circuit as well
09:04Sorry, and stefano dominicali down there to join in the celebrations
09:10You can sense also that kimmy antonelli doesn't really know what to do does he
09:16He's popping down there. It's like where do I what do I do now?
09:20How wonderful and not bad not bad says stefano
09:24Um, he's been out qualified by george russell at every qualifying session this season and there's oscar piastri knows the thing of two about
09:31Taking pole now coming over to congratulate
09:35The vintage 23 year old piastri yeah past it now
09:41Wow what a moment for this young man and he can't take his crash helmet off
09:47It's all it's all still connected to his radio back max was definitely with a smile on his face
09:56It's great how happy everybody
09:58Is for him
10:00Besam side cut his eyes just cut it off
10:04He's got to do another two two races another qualifying
10:11A really wise mature head on young shoulders and an exceptionally nice warm caring human being as well
10:21I always think he looks a bit like senna as well. Yeah, there is a bit of that
10:25On a weekend where obviously the thoughts of it and senna roland ratzenberger very much
10:31In our minds the anniversary just a few days ago
10:34And that's a tragic weekend in imola, but it's it's all smiles here in the sunshine
10:40tom christensen the king of le mans
10:45Now with the interviews talking to the prince of sprints wow kim antonelli what a fantastic lap the fastest ever
10:53Here the miami circuit
10:56Tell us about the feeling
10:58Yeah, I mean was um
11:00Was a very intense qualifying um
11:02I felt really good since this morning and uh
11:05I felt confident going into qualifying and uh yeah, I mean the last lap was mighty. I put
11:12Basically everything together and it was nice that they it came
11:16Oh, you know very nicely and really happy to get the first ball
11:20You're the youngest ever
11:23To start at the front of a of a formula one race sprint race or even a grand prix
11:31What's gonna what's that gonna take you the weekend?
11:34Definitely. I mean tomorrow is gonna be nice to start on the front row. It's gonna be a bit of a different feeling
11:40But uh, you really cannot wait for tomorrow and to see how we can do in the spring and then in the qualifying as well
11:48Everyone is applauding you fantastic job kimmy and good luck for this amazing weekend. Thank you so much
11:54Well, what a story that is uh that it is dad marko uh uh applauding his son and hug everyone we
12:07Saw it coming we really did he just came into this sport and he's looked to the manner born
12:13From the very off hasn't he he's been just tucked in behind george hot in his heels couple of tenths off in most of the qualifying sessions
12:21Sticking with him in races. He's doing well in the championship and then wallop. There we go
12:27Uh a pole position in a sprint race and the youngest to ever do it in either that format or a grand prix format
12:34And he will well, I wonder if he will sleep tonight
12:36I'll be probably so excited about possibilities for tomorrow
12:43Now I will go to the details for us in a in a few moments of time the big weekend final day of the efl tomorrow

13:34Right lots to look forward to this weekend here on sky sports f1
13:41At the moment do you feel like
13:42I want to carry on where I am do well get my confidence up
13:46I don't want people talking to me about red bull right now
13:49Like I know there's no it doesn't make sense to go to red bull
13:52This early in my career so yeah makes no
13:55No sense but if I get the call of course you you take it
14:00So you just had your briefings you're in number five you're number four you're doing those scary come
14:05Together and disappear maneuvers
14:07I was in miami international airport I got out and then we ended up here so I think it took a long
14:11Turned somewhere
14:12And how are you feeling because you've looked a little bit nervous so far
14:14I'm okay
14:15You're 10 points behind oscar you're now the hunter rather than the hunted
14:33How does that feel?
14:34I feel good you know I mean it's not been a perfect season but it's still been a good start to the season
14:39Plenty of opportunities still to come
14:41Round six of 24 and plenty of opportunities for for me to further improve and and
14:45Do better than i've been doing because I know there's more more to come
14:55Yeah plenty to keep you occupied in the build-up first qualifying of the race the rest of the details the weekend sprints from four
15:01Qualifying from 25 to nine
15:04We'll build up with cars on track from nine and it's the same on sunday 7 30 on air
15:09With lights out from nine o'clock
15:11And i wonder if kimmy antonelli can do the same in qualifying for the actual grand prix he's done here because this is a big story this one
15:19He's got so much talent and he was three tenths ahead of his teammate george russell tight at the top
15:25Shares the front row with oscar piastri
15:27Reaction to kimmy antonelli taking that maiden pole in the sprint in a couple of moments time
15:32Welcome back a sprint pole for kimmy antonelli let's get some reaction from toto wolf
15:45So we'll catch up with you more later, but um wow he's never never driven here never driven
15:51This young man, uh
15:53Hopefully will make us lots of uh lots of fun in the future lots of happiness you only score your first pole
15:58I know it's only sprint pole, but let's not devalue it. You only do the first time once don't you?
16:03Yeah, exactly and it's about the trajectory
16:05It's not whether it's a pole in only the sprint race or a pole tomorrow in the future. He's done it
16:10It's been quickest. We'll let you go back into the team catch up with you later. Thanks very much
16:15Brilliant absolutely brilliant. What a story. Oh my god
16:18I mean we saw him coming out of the garage here and walking by and he was just so calm just
16:23Pushing his little razor going like oh, where do I go now? Just wow what composure out of an 18 year old?
16:29I would have been like that. Yeah, it's lovely to see you know all year long. He's been fast
16:34He's been just behind george, and I didn't expect that here. That was unbelievable to put it on pole position for the sprint race
16:41That's a special moment in his in his time
16:44Of course, she's a massively special moment for him
16:46But what what is it that you see in in his driving? Has he got a bit of everything?
16:49What it's it's funny actually because we saw him last year we saw him with the incident in monza
16:56And that's what I thought of kimmy antonelli
16:59Unbelievably quick, but obviously on the edge the whole time and then he comes to this
17:042025 season and he's completely different to that driver
17:06I thought he was he's calm he's collected just going about his business slowly progressing
17:12Always there as well getting points in every race. I mean that's just not what you do as a new driver
17:18You make mistakes and maybe he has but you haven't really seen them
17:21So it's the consistency that's blown my mind with him and he's just gone boom and given us the speed as well
17:27That's what I remember too is the accidents last year and thinking oh wow
17:30Is it going to be a little over his head?
17:32Is this going to be his style to be overly aggressive and make a lot of mistakes and and you honestly couldn't even
17:38Fault him for that being so young and new but um this year has been a totally different story and highly impressive
17:45And i'm i'm sure everybody at mercedes is like
17:49Apart from george rossi
17:51Who we're going to hear from right now you know but they push each other which isn't a bad thing either yeah exactly here he is
17:58George you've looked quick all day and you went out obviously really early in that session just talk
18:02Me through firstly that kind of the theory behind that and how happy you were with your lap
18:06Yeah, I mean firstly massive congrats to kimmy really pleased to see
18:10Uh, he did an amazing job. He's been really quick all day
18:13Uh, really impressive. I've been struggling a little bit today a little bit off the pace not being so comfortable and we just wanted to go on the early side because
18:20Ultimately, I didn't quite have that confidence and we thought maybe there's a yellow or red at the end of a session it'll come our way but
18:27Yeah, p5 today not great
18:30More to to improve but amazing for for kimmy and the team any kind of reasons or early signs why you're struggling for that confidence at the minute?
18:37I mean, it's these sprint race weekend are challenging if you get in the groove early
18:41You can just build from there and just all day today just haven't quite felt it in the car
18:45Uh, especially the tires sliding around a bit, but as I said, it's a sprint sprint race today
18:50Obviously disappointed not to be further up the grid. They're really happy for uh for kimmy. Okay, so best out of the weekend
18:57Oh, good on him. Look, he's taking it in his drive
18:59But that is because he's been driving so well as you say
19:01I mean probably the most consistent aside from Oscar Piastri and max right in the top three
19:06You'd think in the way that they're performing with the car that they've got but
19:10It's such fine margins here isn't it jensen with the temperatures that we have if you push too hard early in the lap
19:16It could be as simple as that. He said a question of confidence, but
19:19These tires are just on such a fine edge on it. Yeah, just taking it back to george a little bit
19:23He didn't seem happy from the first lap of practice. He was complaining the steering felt heavy
19:28The car didn't feel like what he was used to so he's already on the back foot mentally at that point
19:33And then his teammate goes it goes and does that but the margins are so small and it's so nice to see that
19:38You know kimmy got pole position by by half a tenth and then it was another half a tenth
19:42It's it's so close to the top and it's whether you just
19:45You you minimize the the mistakes and you get as close as you can to that perfect lap
19:50And that's what gives these guys even more adrenaline when they do clinch that pole because it's so close out there
19:55And as he said these weekends you have to unload and and be good right off the bat because you just don't get a lot of time
20:01I mean even in the one practice session that they got they go from having to do race runs to then a qualifying run
20:06Which got cut off in and of itself because of the accident at the end
20:09So it's just such a little time that there's so much reliant on being good right away
20:14Which is what george said kimmy was good from the get-go okay
20:17We're hoping we're going to be able to walk back with kimmy until he's just having a in the pen for the moment
20:22But in the meantime, let's hear from the mclaren drivers
20:24Oscar super close out there half a tenth in it at the end. How are you feeling about that one?
20:34Reasonably happy. I mean wasn't wasn't the best lap ever
20:38Had a lock up into the last corner, which I think was probably
20:42Probably where pole went away, but no peace is still a good result
20:46You know, we can still fight from there in the sprint tomorrow, so
20:48All in all pretty happy yeah touch on it there feel like you're very much in the mix tomorrow going into that sprint and then still main qualifying and the grand prix itself to come of course
20:57Yeah, definitely. I think we've got a bit more pace to unlock hopefully so
21:02Yeah, feeling feeling positive still and uh
21:04Try and make up a spot tomorrow in the sprint before we get stuck into where the big points are. Thanks Oscar. Thanks
21:11Good luck
21:13Lando p3 looks super close out there. How are you feeling about that session and results?
21:18Uh good close close qualifying um, but felt good
21:23uh happy just to get a good lap in there and
21:26uh, yeah, it was close so um
21:28Not much more I could ask for
21:30What about tomorrow looking forward to the sprint and just general feeling this weekend and nice to be back in miami
21:35Where you got that that first win last year of course, uh, you know a lot of good memories here, but um
21:41Same time you forget about it doesn't doesn't matter, you know, uh, it's in the past and
21:45Concentrating on this weekend and and today's performance, which was uh, I think in a good good ballpark obviously not not good enough, but
21:52um
21:53Shows how close it is shows how quick the mercedes are and uh
21:56Both of us behind so a bit of a job to do for for the sprint race tomorrow, but
22:01Close enough that we can still try and aim for a pole tomorrow. Thanks. Thanks
22:04I love here is the man himself kimmy
22:08You're adoring fans if I could just thank you. Thank you. That's what happens when you put it on on pole position
22:15Wow, I did not see that coming to be honest. No, no, I
22:19I felt the lap was good, uh, and I was I was happy with it, uh, with how it came together
22:25Um, there were still a few bits, uh, where I could have done a bit better, but still super happy with how I put, you know, the all the sectors together
22:33And uh, yeah, now I will enjoy this moment a little bit more
22:38But at the same time, I'm gonna try to focus on tomorrow because it will be good to repeat ourselves
22:44You've had such a good start to the year
22:47I don't know if you expected a pole this soon
22:50But are you now gonna expect that win soon?
22:54That's uh, that's a big big target. Um
22:57I mean we know the mclaren's and ferrari
22:59Also, red bull, you know, the race pace is really strong, but I think we're pretty close, uh, all together
23:05So it's gonna be important tomorrow to have a good start and then trying to
23:09Set a good pace without digging too much
23:12And then uh, yeah, then in qualifying trying to
23:16Do an even better lap
23:17Kimi congratulations, uh, i'm sure the emotions are very high right now
23:21And it's been an amazing year for you for us watching you it's been the steady progress that you've been making and the consistency has been awesome
23:29But this one this chunk that you've this this this chunk that you've been able to improve this race in qualifying bang
23:35Where's that come from?
23:36Well, it's coming, you know, a lot every weekend i'm learning massively and I think the last week having a break
23:43Really helped me to gather all the informations and process them all, uh, you know
23:48And also recharging a little bit the batteries and you know, it was uh, it was really good
23:53I mean the whole qualifying I felt I was able to make a step lap by lap and especially you know
23:59Also, I'm much more aware of you know, how to do a consistent warm-up how to extract more of the tire
24:05But of course there's still a lot to improve, uh, but we're in a good way
24:09You've never driven this you've never driven this track before and then we saw your dad at the end
24:13He was hugging anyone within within sight
24:15Uh, must be a nice moment for the family this too. I should imagine they'll enjoy that
24:19Definitely is a really nice moment to share all together. I mean my dad
24:24He's been coming since the start of the season and he's like a rock for me because I can always rely on him
24:30And you know, it's really nice to share this moment with him
24:33I mean, it's such an impressive job. What do you think is the have you gotten on with the car really well?
24:39Do you feel like you have a grip on working with the engineers in the car?
24:43Do you still feel like there's room for improvement there for sure?
24:46There's always still, you know, there's always room for improvement
24:48Uh, but every weekend i'm more confident with the car
24:52You know, I am able to play with the car more and explore more the limit
24:55But at the same time understanding much better the setup of the car
24:59So much, you know, I can give a much better feedback much more detail
25:03And that's allowed the team as well to improve the car during the weekend
25:06Thanks, Kimi. Lucky in pink, eh? Did well today. Brilliant. Yeah, thank you
25:10Thanks so much. I'll take that one in a minute. So let's hear from Max Verstappen
25:18Hey Max, well firstly congratulations on the news obviously taking it into sprint qualifying
25:23You've had a really rushed a kind of approach coming into today
25:26How pleased are you to have still got a lap in and a decent performance to get people on the grid today?
25:30Yeah, I mean, I think what we also did in Q3 was good
25:34The tyres are holding on quite well, but fortunately already from FP1
25:39Yeah, just struggling with a lot of understeer in the car and you know around here with all these low speed corners
25:44You just lose quite a bit of lap time. I think you can see in the first sector
25:48We're quite competitive because that's where a few high speed corners are
25:52But as soon as you get to the low speed, we just yeah lack quite a bit of a quite a bit of grip
25:57But yeah, before is all right. I mean, it's of course not where I want to be
26:00But you also need to be realistic with the limitations that we have at the moment
26:04And I think it was still quite close
26:07Have you kind of seen enough to kind of believe that you're going to be in the mix for the sprint and actually can fight with the cars around you?
26:12Honestly, it's always very difficult to say in a sprint
26:16Sprint weekend because there's no real proper data in long runs because you don't know what others are doing with fuel loads and stuff
26:22But just going off my own feeling with how I also felt
26:26Just balance wise with the car. I think it will be it will be tough for the heat
26:30And we know like I said, we know our limitations, so we just need to try and make the best of it. Great. Well, best of luck tomorrow, Max. Thank you
26:37Christian Horne over the last few weeks has been at pains to point out that the correlation between their old simulator and the track has not been working
26:45There are a few people that have doubted whether that's just, you know, an excuse
26:49But what they have been talking about is saying that they've been using the data at the track to build themselves into weekends
26:54Now when you get to a sprint weekend like this, less opportunity to do that. Are we are we able to read anything into that?
27:00Yeah, that's why they have all these simulators because testing is so limited and you can see the difference with the teams that have arrived and they're ready
27:07Immediately and other teams take a bit more time to get into a rhythm. It's the same for drivers as well
27:12Whether they had simulated time or not you can see the difference
27:15So yeah, it's interesting to hear Max talk because the guy that's such a winner and we're just used to winning and seeing him winning qualifying in the race
27:23He's very calm
27:24You know, he's very calm in the position. He is in he knows he's doing the best job he can. I don't know how long that's gonna last with him being calm
27:31With qualifying fourth fifth here and there, but he still thinks he's got a chance which is exciting for us to run the sprint
27:37The thing with the thing with Red Bull Danica and with Max specifically on Max's side of the garage
27:42Is that he does spend these practice sessions when he's got three practice sessions absolutely optimising the setup
27:47The first time we really see the true pace of Max Verstappen because he knows how to get through Q1 and Q2
27:52Is in his final lap in Q3 that seems to be the rhythm of his weekend
27:57It's totally different here
27:59Well, they usually do make a lot of progress throughout the weekend, of course
28:02But let's not forget this was kind of Red Bull's fall from grace finally last year when McLaren with Lando got the got his first win here
28:10And he just really wasn't up to speed
28:12So, you know, this just might not be a track that is well suited for them
28:15And they just don't quite have what they need compared to the other cars
28:19They just this just just isn't for them, but there will be places this year that Red Bull will go or they'll stand out
28:24There's another thing we can't forget, you know, when you look at McLaren, you look at Mercedes
28:27They've got two good drivers. They're always on it
28:29So it's useful information coming back from both cars
28:32Max hasn't had that for years really a couple of years
28:35So, you know, whether he trusts Sonoda-san, I don't know
28:39It's it's a difficult one. So that's gonna hurt him going into a sprint qualifying
28:43Yeah, well, Yuki Sonoda didn't get that lap and didn't get out of SQ1. Let's hear from the Ferrari drivers
28:52Lewis, P7 at the end of that one. How was that session for you? How was the car feeling out there?
28:57I thought it was a better session
29:00P1 was probably a bit better to the car was a bit nicer to drive in in P1, but yeah, we're just lacking speed, but I'm
29:08Just keep working on from there
29:10Feel like you can fight tomorrow in the sprint. Maybe make up a bit of ground from where you are
29:14I'm not really. I think all the cars ahead are faster, so
29:19Yeah
29:21What else to say?
29:22We've got the main qualifying session and Grand Prix coming up, of course a chance to reset in the middle of that
29:27So do you have some ideas of what you could maybe do differently with it?
29:30There's always ideas whether or not they're gonna be right or not
29:32But there's definitely learnings to take from today
29:35Set up changes we made and how the car behaved and
29:37There's definitely work to do to pick up speed going into the rest of the weekend.
29:42Okay, thanks, Lewis
29:44Cheers
29:46Michel, P6 at the end of that look quite tight out there. How are you feeling about that result?
29:52Bad
29:54The lap was good, but the pace is just
29:56Not at all there for now, so it's a bit
29:58Annoying, but it's the way it is for now
30:01I'll try my best tomorrow to try and do something special with the start, but to be honest, there's not
30:08Much room for improvement today. It was just
30:12That's the pace of the car
30:14Do you know where the big losses are at the moment? You have a good idea going into tomorrow
30:18You've got the sprint, but then you can reset for the main qualifying session
30:21It's every corner really, so it's not like we are particularly weak in one type of corner
30:26Yes, the slow speed seems to be a little bit more of our weakness, but it changes from one weekend to the other
30:31So it's just not great
30:34Well, I was gonna say that that lewis sounded down in the dumps again until you hear charl and he's just as down in the dumps
30:39So it's not performing for them this weekend. It's it's confusing. I'm sure they're confused
30:44But you know you go a couple years ago and they were incredibly fast and great at qualifying but struggled in the race
30:50Last year it seemed that kind of flipped its head
30:52They worked on the race car and got much better about tire degradation and being able to have a good race car
30:58And then you just kind of thought maybe this would be the year that they put all of it together and sort of find the balance
31:04And unfortunately, it seems like they've kind of completely lost the balance as charles said it's not good anywhere
31:10Can't run it low enough for what they want to do can they particularly in high fuel?
31:14So that's where the encouragement would have come from
31:16In sprint and qualifying but not to be the case because you can run it lower in the sprint qualifying
31:21Yeah, I mean this this is why this year is really exciting I think because these he's massively disappointed
31:27He's starting p6 for the sprint tomorrow and he's three tenths off pole position
31:32It's it's tiny margins, you know, this is a car that won the last sprint race we had so
31:38I understand his disappointment, but it is just about that fine tuning of the car over over a weekend and maybe they'll be able to sort out better for
31:46For real qualifying not real qualifying for qualifying for the race
31:49But it's more tricky for them because they can't lower the car as much because in the race full fuel tanks
31:53That's the closest though that uh lewis has been to charleclerc in the last three qualifying sessions
31:58So maybe something for him to cling on to even though it didn't seem it from that interview
32:03We're going to take a short break when we come back. We'll mop things up here in miami
32:07What a story that is bono loved it toto loved it everyone in the mercedes garage loved it antonelli the youngest pole sitter in history
32:15You
32:23Kimmy antonelli is the first italian to take a pole in f1 since giancarlo fisichella at the belgian grand prix in
32:312009
32:32What a lap it was let's see it in all its glory at the skypad with anthony
32:39Thanks simon yeah looking forward to this one haven't had a look yet
32:42So here we go down the main straight bring the cars to the left-hand side
32:46And yes, he uses a lot of circuit on the left-hand side to help open up turn one clean through turn two
32:53Misses the curb there that gives him a good run through turn three smoothly does it so far
32:59into turn four again using getting all the way to the wall and
33:03Wheel right up to the white line through turn five now. This is always a tricky one
33:07I'm just going to rewind it here now the art of this corner a couple of corners is you've got the car on a knife edge
33:13You're requesting a lot from the tires here
33:15You're turning braking and then having to accelerate on the exit. It's super precise work
33:21So he goes all the way to the outside here
33:23You want aimed for that curb pinch the car in turn eight to aim for the next curb and he
33:29Absolutely nails that one and doesn't use too much curb on the exit as well for good measure that sends him down
33:35This long winding straight in the next drs. So that was absolutely
33:40Beautiful driving there through turn seven and eight now into the braking zone of turn 11
33:46It's going to slow this one down again
33:48Again using all the curb on the right-hand side
33:50The tiniest of lockups actually just again
33:53I'll just rewind that for you
33:54I can see he's carrying a bit of a tiny flat spot there if we watch that in full speed
33:58I see that he just backs out of it with the steering
34:01It goes to lock up and that always makes the steering go away from you and he lifts off the brake pedal
34:06Modulates it and the steering that there we go. It's super quick, but he's got those reactions
34:12Through turn 12 he's patient with the car in the mid corner gets on power through turn 13
34:17And there's another part where you have to use all the code
34:18Yes, left and right through 1450 get the car to the right-hand side
34:22Miss the curb on the on the inside and a nice clean exit through turn 16 honestly
34:28This is uh, i'm used to commentating on a lap in qualifying
34:32Driven like this by the likes of max verstappen
34:35So uh really really superb effort so far last braking zone of the lap comes up at you turn 17
34:42No lockups here. We saw a lot of drivers make mistakes into that one
34:46And that's it flat out to the line. Well done. Kimi Anthony that
34:51Well, there's a warning shot for the rest of the drivers on the grid
34:54He's going to be around for quite some time
34:56He is answer. I want to just come back to you obviously in your role as mercedes sim driver
35:00Everyone like from from a neutral perspective as fans everyone is thrilled super excited about kimmy
35:07What's the feeling with the engineers back at the factory and about the way he works in the simulator around the team etc etc?
35:14Well, yeah, I mean obviously everybody in the team
35:17uh, were were excited in in kimmy's potential and I think it shows that
35:23The team really knows what they're looking at for future drivers remember george russell is a product of their young driver program as well, so
35:31Obviously a keen eye for for that young talent coming through kimmy is is here now
35:36and it was a it was a
35:38It was a difficult process to go through who would feel that seat after the legend of lewis hamilton had been with the team for so long
35:45So but that the team really feel I I feel like they're really nurturing to him
35:50That's the most important thing and he's in the spotlight in in a in a big team right at the sharp end
35:56And that's not easy
35:58So you need a lot of a lot of support from the team a lot of comfort from the team
36:02Yes
36:02He had the moment in monster and I think that was good in many ways because it it showed what could happen if you're left to your own devices
36:10And I think the team reacted really well after that one and and have nurtured him through since then and he's taken a different approach
36:16He said I sat down with him yesterday. He said he'd done 70 laps in the sim
36:21Before coming here only 70 laps a little bit more than race distance
36:26Drivers can easily do multiple days of the same track when it's a new track
36:29But obviously we don't have that much time anymore in formula one
36:32So yeah, he's clearly done his homework there. He's keen to work and yeah, these are the fruits of his labor
36:39Thanks, Anthony
36:40Yeah, it is the first time in the history of mercedes f1 since they came back into the sport that they've had two from the young driver program in the two senior seats
36:49that's
36:50The charge of gwen lecruz the head of the young driver development program within mercedes
36:57Every time in every single category that mercedes or he has placed a driver
37:02He has a winner and that is aside from formula one and you wonder how long that's going to be with with kimmy antilelli
37:08And george russell if george is to remain remember his
37:12Uh, his contract is up at the end of the year. That's his father lovely moment with bono
37:16Before you do anything else
37:18Yeah, yeah, yeah, we celebrated now it was all super but now we go back to work
37:26Yeah, yeah, exactly
37:26Of course
37:27All this
37:28All this
37:28All this
37:28All this
37:29All this
37:30I'm pleased for bono too because actually I talked to him back in japan
37:34About kimmy and the different challenge of having arguably the greatest of all time
37:40lewis hamilton and then someone like this who's perceived as a generational talent and bono's say well
37:46I can mold him a little bit. That's that's the thingy. I suppose they they've they've got hold of him from such a young age
37:52That they're able to to just tweak him and manipulate him as they want as well
37:56Yeah, but it's it does take time because the the engineering engineer a driver language that you have is very specific
38:03You know, I always speak to my engineer for example in mclaren when I was there in a certain way that I wouldn't with another engineer and
38:09It does take time. So it's amazing. He's got up to speed as quick as he he has. I know bono very well
38:14We worked together for a few years
38:17And and also when when I won the world championship he was there
38:20So he's got the experience of working with lewis for so many years, which is great
38:24But yeah learning new stuff with with kimmy is uh, it's not it's not easy, but
38:29He's made it very easy kimmy by just being so down to earth and willing to learn
38:33You know, you hear toto there say we've had the celebrations now. It's time to get back to it. He's like, yeah, okay
38:38Let's go now that the other thing that bono saying is just how could his feedback was and actually when you make likenesses
38:45It's the same for gp where max came in
38:47He says straight off we knew we've got someone special because he was able to just take everything and explain it
38:55What he needed from the car and they were able to take it away and turn it into an engineering problem and sort out any issues
39:01I mean that's huge and critical and look at it on a weekend like this when you have one practice session
39:07It shows because he went out and qualified on the pole
39:10So you're you know your ability to be able to take the feeling that you have
39:15And translate in in that into effective words and like jensen said there is a language between you and the engineer
39:22Like every driver has sort of their own level of expression of like how much is under steering or over steering
39:28And the engineer needs to translate that into to a setup and everybody kind of real like relates to that different as a driver
39:35And also each driver tends to have a style, you know the way that they like to drive the car whether it's
39:41You know a little bit more on the front of the car a little bit more pointy and some some drivers like it a little bit more settled in the rear
39:47Everybody's got their own little style so you also have to play that into it
39:51But what I found really impressive about watching that qualifying lap was just how smooth he was
39:58Everything from his steering to the throttle lifting there was certain parts where he just had to lift just a little bit
40:04Everything was just so smooth even the sound of him jumping on the brakes was not a jump
40:09It was like a press on the brake and that's not something that comes with experience. That's a style
40:14So clearly that's you know, that's obviously working well for him and he's now the
40:19youngest youngest pole sitter in history of f1 by two and a half
40:23Years just just made our way back into the hard rock stadium home of the dolphins
40:26I feel like one if only I was there 400 pounds heavier
40:30And we're just waiting to talk to marco antonelli his father must have been a nice moment
40:34Do you remember it when when you you were your dad the first pole position that you got?
40:39Yeah, it's a few years ago now back in 2004 but um
40:43Yeah, it means a lot and it was it brings back all these memories when you see that when you see him with his father
40:48That hug that embrace, you know, they've been through everything together his father would have been there every step of the way
40:55So yeah, it's happened very quickly for him in formula one in his career to be on the you know
41:00To cross that finish line in qualifying and be the quickest driver
41:04In the world in formula one on that moment in time, but yeah, that motion doesn't matter when it happens in your career
41:10That first time you get pole position. It means so much and that's lovely to see that connection
41:15Did you sleep the night? I mean were you thinking about the race all night or or how did you manage?
41:21I had a guard in my door in my bedroom because it was in italy
41:24I scored my pole position and obviously michael schumacher was in a ferrari, so and he was p2
41:29No, I don't really I always used to sleep really well. Yeah, I mean we've seen you
41:34Fall asleep anywhere. What advice would you give to to kimmy at this stage in his career when things things are rushing up on him all the time
41:41And it's easy to get he's a he's a teenager. It's about remaining grounded. Yeah, but he seems like he's the kind of character
41:49That's just it. I mean we saw his sort of like
41:52Emotional arc. I feel like after qualifying you seem super calm coming out of the garage
41:56Like saw him walking very easily and then it seemed like his energy elevated and maybe that's where toto came in
42:02As sort of like a supervisor of the situation going like, okay
42:05We need to you know get back to work now
42:07But I think the the best advice in these scenarios is to really just stay humble when you stay humble you stay grateful
42:13And then you know, it's everything just seems to work better
42:16So, you know, I remember early on and an Indy car
42:20I'm you know, it was like things were going well early and it was like just stay humble know that it doesn't always last forever
42:26That's the thing is that he could have jumped into this car a couple of years ago
42:29And this would have not been the scenario off the bat
42:31So, you know, he's coming into a situation where the car is getting much better much more drivable
42:36And it doesn't it's just not always like that some years are just not very good
42:40And it just is a really cool situation for him to be so good so early because the car and everything is just working really well
42:46That now is a big part of his career, right? We're in year one, which is still i'm in disbelief, but
42:53This is a big part of his career last year
42:55He could have walked in here and not many people would have taken his picture now
42:58He's got everybody following down the pit lane and that that brings an added pressure
43:03And he would have had it for the first few races, but this this elevates it massively. How many times have you seen that?
43:09Honestly though they come into formula one they have a big reputation
43:12You're right the moment you start taking those stepping stones first pump first win etc etc
43:18You're you're going very quickly you're heading to superstardom. Yeah, that must be a really difficult thing to handle
43:24And to be judged then yeah everything you do everything whether he's in the car out of the car
43:29And it's that mindset that's that's tricky, you know
43:32You need to get it right and having the right people around you his father
43:36Toto is a big deal, so he's in a good place and i'm really hopeful that he's
43:41He's we all know is the real deal, but uh, it's it's the off-track stuff that is the more difficult thing
43:46And I think the fact that it's happening in his first year like this
43:50This really does wonders for your reputation as a driver because when you come into a team and if things don't go well
43:56Look that could be the car it could be a lot of other things
43:58But the finger could get pointed much easier at the driver especially when they're the rookie when they don't have experience
44:04So for him to come in and be doing so well like he is and get this pole
44:08I mean, this is uh, this is a good thing for his career, but but also
44:13One thing you do when we talk to george
44:15He's also come through this program the thing that he's always at pains to point out is that when he came in and again alongside lewis hamilton
44:22Multiple world champion the fact that they've been with that system all the way through from from a junior level
44:28Okay, I think he's picked up in in f3 wasn't he george
44:31But a little bit earlier from kidding they say it's a nurturing team and people like toto and quen
44:35And back then when it was james vowels who was looking after some of the younger drivers as well
44:39They'll say look we believe in you. It's not like you're going to be jettisoned
44:43It's not like other teams are occasionally you might get the hefo quite quickly not to maintain
44:49But it is a nurturing team. Yeah, and it needs to be right for a racing driver. They're all insecure
44:56Most sportsmen are right. You can have 10 great days one bad day. It's like am I good enough?
45:00You know, that's that's the way it is and you need those people around you to nurture you through the the good times the bad times
45:06They've been through all the experiences before in the sport. So
45:10He needs to be a sponge basically kimmy taking all of that on board
45:13But no, he's obviously in a great position and we can't take anything away from george's teammate as well. He has been
45:19Faultless this year. He's been so so quick and that's what makes this even more impressive
45:24You know to get one up on george in sprint qualifying
45:27I mean that that's that's amazing. So they have a
45:30Really good light up this year and obviously they had an amazing lineup last year
45:34But they've got a younger lineup now for the future
45:36Okay, right. We're still waiting because guess what our italian colleagues are milking this for for all they can
45:42But i'm not surprised because what a moment for him and for Italy as well
45:46Let's hear from isaac accia again inside the top 10 in a qualifying session
45:53Isaac great work to get into the top 10 today. How are you feeling after that kind of performance?
45:59Yeah, it was again stressful qualifying, you know first run was a really poor from us
46:06Made a mistake in the last corner and that puts us into pressure to get to q2
46:10And as q2 I found a really good lap in so I was really happy to get to q3 was incredibly tight and then
46:19You know we I think I made it by one second on the line, you know
46:23And I started my lap two and a half seconds behind charles
46:26So it was not ideal and we knew I had to make the most out of this and p9 is good
46:32Great sort of position for tomorrow to find to the point just one place away from them
46:36What have you got to do to get yourself in that spot? Yeah, I mean, it's uh, you know, it's quite straightforward
46:42The car ahead is a one point so and it's alex
46:45So i've got to finish ahead and if I can't make it at the start then it's gonna be really difficult because
46:52They are super fast in the straight and
46:55And it's gonna be difficult to take here
46:57Yeah, a few a full interview with isaac coming up with rachel uh tomorrow
47:03We just don't wait. I think he's coming in now fresh from a chat with sky it's only we're over here
47:09Hello marco
47:11Congratulations amazing amazing amazing
47:16How's that one feel how does that feel?
47:18The moment is difficult to to say
47:26What I feel because uh, yeah after six races not fives because this is the sixth race and it's very
47:35Unbelievable that
47:38See that kimmy is in pole. Okay. He's a sprint race
47:42He's a sprint quali the weekend is very long, but
47:45Uh, yeah, we we we we had the good start
47:49I would say it's a good start congratulations. I can't imagine how it feels. I have no children
47:54But I imagine today is a very very special day. So well done
47:58Obviously being dad you play a huge role i'm curious if you could tell me about
48:04His style his personality
48:06How is he able to have such composure at 18 years old and be able to accomplish this tell us a little bit about young kimmy
48:15We are younger
48:18We are one family that I think they try to transmit
48:23at
48:25his son and
48:27His daughter because we have a daughter as well
48:30that day in the life need to work always very hard and
48:35Not complain before that you understand if you did a good job or not
48:40A focus in the future and the day is very is very very hard
48:47For everybody and for our family as well because we are a normal family that we work every day and so
48:55I think that
48:58Nothing special respect that the other family that try to transmit
49:02At the children the best for the life and I think that kimmy
49:10Understood this and this is the result
49:13Apart the speed the the quality that he makes on the track
49:18In the normal life this is very is very big pleasure for us
49:23I just want you to it's obviously sunken already i'm sure but
49:28Qualifying is qualifying doesn't matter if it's sprint or it's or it's you know qualifying for the main race
49:33Everybody is out there to go as quick as they can and your son was the quickest driver in the world
49:38At that moment in time, I mean blows my mind it gets me emotional thinking about having kids
49:43No, no, it's true. Qualifying is qualifying but
49:48We know that
49:50Today is another day
49:52Okay, now we celebrate the qualifying but
49:56The focus must be tomorrow. You can still celebrate qualifying. It's okay. Your son might have to focus on tomorrow
50:02Enjoy this moment. This is such a special time
50:05But yeah, for sure, but
50:08In formula one
50:10In the formula one of 20-25
50:13Need to
50:14To stay always calm and
50:17It's very difficult to perform every day at the same
50:22System that you did in the past because now in one second you are on the top or in the back and
50:30For this reason
50:32I think that today is a very good day
50:35But we have to think of the future because he's is the beginning of the of the past that Kimi had to do the
50:41And then of course, we have a fantastic team fantastic person around us and
50:47Toto
50:48He's amazing
50:50Bono is super
50:51Everybody knows Bono and
50:53Yeah, we are in very very good position with Mercedes a lovely relationship
50:58Hypocrisy between Kimi and his and his sister where where where is his sister and mom
51:03They're watching from back in
51:06My wife and my daughter are in misano because we have a GT team and we have the first race
51:13Of italian gt championship and i'm here but
51:17They are in misano for work
51:19Well, there we go enjoy it honestly
51:22Thank you so much to talk thank you so much for the the race tomorrow
51:26I'll take that but yeah, well a lovely story, you know in the in the day that max has announced that he's to be a father
51:33It's great to see the kind of generations together, isn't it?
51:37This is what it's all about racing. We saw it so much with you and your dad john
51:40Yeah, it's it's so lovely to see it but it
51:44I just wish if for me it feels like he's
51:48Very professional. I mean amazing he's gonna be a great dad for kimmy obviously going through the you know
51:54The experience is going to go through but um yeah, I mean if my dad was here
51:58He'd be just crying his eyes out rolling around on the floor laughing and joking and
52:02You know it's for one's definitely changed in that way
52:05We have to enjoy these moments though every driver has to because you don't know what's going to happen tomorrow
52:10So yeah, I understand toto's view of his focus again, but you've got to enjoy these moments really do
52:17You know, I kept standing there thinking to myself that like you said he's very composed and very professional
52:22Which obviously is going to you know transfer to his son and the kind of composure that he has he has
52:28But I kept thinking I wonder what he's told him throughout his life
52:31Like I was thinking about what did my dad tell me when I was young or actually my entire career from go-karting on
52:37And every single time before I'd go out he'd say have fun every single time and I wonder what sort of repetitive
52:44Important statements have been said over and over again to kimmy obviously not for too long
52:49He's only 18, but he has a good head on his shoulders. It's a lovely story to end the day here
52:54And another unsupply surprising result you might think certainly surprise kimmy antonelli and I wonder what surprises tomorrow
53:02We'll bring we are on is a surprise for you. We're on all day
53:05We'll start with f1 academy qualifying and we won't leave you to the end of ted's qualifying notebook
53:11But there we go poor man today, he's the story kimmy antonelli the absolute beauty you've done that
53:20We've all absolutely thoroughly enjoyed it well done to him the youngest ever pollster of any kind in the history of formula
53:27His dad loved it. We loved it. I will see you tonight. It was all good. Bye bye
