00:00Economist and former minister in the Ministry of Finance, Mariano Brown, says the UNC was able to tap into what he describes as disaffected youth who did not see opportunity with the PNM.
00:15He adds that the message was both clear and catchy. When UNC wins, everybody wins.
00:22However, Mr Brown says, the country has to wait and see how the party will fulfill its campaign promises.
00:29If you do that and borrow heavily, because we are already in the high 70s, you're going to get to your debt-to-GDP ratio.
00:39I mean, it has happened. Where in Barbados, for example, Conservative Barbados, to meet those election promises are borrowed.
00:46Where did they end up? In the IMF store. And if people figure that it's just as simple as, well, they'll meet all the government,
00:52take all the expectations and pay all the increases and so on, well, where do you think you're going to end up again?
00:57President of the Tobago Chamber of Industry and Commerce, Curtis Williams, says there are several issues affecting the business community in Tobago
01:07that were ignored by the previous ruling administration. He says funding is one of them.
01:13I understand my issues about cash and what's happening in the wider space, but I can tell you, in Tobago's space, we are dying in need of cash.
01:21We are the bridge, a part where we definitely need some sort of extra funding to take care of some of the outstanding debts that Tobago has set me up.
01:31Political analyst Dr. Mukesh Bazdu tells The Morning Edition, the UNC has achieved a landslide defeat of the PNM as it now has a constitutional majority.
01:43He says the construction of the new cabinet is critical moving forward.
01:48It's interesting to see, following yesterday's results, the formation of the cabinet. This will be very important because there are key positions that have to be filled.
02:00One of it being first who will be the attorney general, which will be followed by who will possibly, I think Mr. Brown is making reference to the economic issues, who will be in charge of the Ministry of Finance.
