We go in on pick #29 for the Commanders, we would love, like and hate THESE picks.
Transcript
00:00More on the Caps coming up in just a few.
00:02It is day one of the NFL draft.
00:04We're about five hours away from the first pick being announced.
00:08Without further ado, let's get into pick 29 and what we would love, like, and hate from the Washington Commanders, an annual exercise on draft day.
00:17So, Danny, you do the honors first.
00:19I want to know.
00:20Now, this has to be realistic, right?
00:21Of course, we'd love Travis Hunter or Abdul Carter.
00:24But this is of the options that are presumably going to be taken around pick 29.
00:29What is something that could actually happen that you would love?
00:32This is an obscure thing.
00:34Well, obscure is the wrong word.
00:35I don't know how likely this is.
00:36I'm hopeful that enough things go Washington's way that this does happen.
00:41You want me to throw a little sounder to reveal who I would love in this draft, GP?
00:45You want me to do it that way?
00:46Let's do it that way.
00:47Darius, play who I would love.
00:51Matthew Golden, wide receiver, Texas.
00:55Swin in the gun.
00:56Ready to take the snap.
00:59Has the snap.
01:00Fourth and 13.
01:01Ewers looking.
01:02Fires.
01:02He's got Golden open.
01:03He caught it.
01:04Touchdown, Texas.
01:06Matthew Golden strikes again.
01:0828 yards.
01:10A fourth down and 13.
01:12A speed burner.
01:13Matthew Golden will provide an immediate deep threat in the NFL.
01:16Running a 4-3, 40-yard dash, his straight line agility leaves defenders flat-footed.
01:22His explosiveness was showcased late in the year as he tallied 162 yards against Georgia
01:28in the SEC championship game and went for 149 yards and a touchdown in the college football
01:34quarterfinal against Arizona State.
01:36His combination of big playability and reliable hands gives him possibly the highest upside
01:42at his position in the draft.
01:44Did you hear the key words in there?
01:46Big playability and speed.
01:48Help Jaden Daniels?
01:49I would love it if they went Matthew Golden.
01:53I get it.
01:54It's speed.
01:55It's a weapon.
01:56You're just not going to get me to disagree with anything that adds weaponry to Jaden Daniels'
02:03arson.
02:04So, I don't see it happening because A, I don't know that he'll be there.
02:08And B, I think if he is, they wouldn't take him.
02:10But, if they did take him, I'm coming into the studio tomorrow like Vince McMahon happy
02:16about having another piece to add to McLaurin and Debo and that wide receiver.
02:20I will eat an entire Pupitella pizza on Friday if they take him.
02:24Yeah.
02:24We will be at Pupitella pizza in Chantilly tomorrow.
02:27So, come on out and celebrate the first round pick and the caps on a 2-0 series lead with
02:32us all day long and eat some Zah for your lunchtime.
02:35For what I would love, I'm going Edge.
02:38I'm going Donovan Ezraku from Boston College.
02:41I care about production.
02:43I know it seems to be something that is fleeting now that you would draft a player who's actually
02:49good in college to go along with some measurables.
02:52I want a speed rusher.
02:53I want a guy that can get to the quarterback.
02:55I would be giddy if Ezraku falls into their lap and they take the senior defensive end out
03:00of the ACC.
03:01Donovan Ezraku, defensive end, Boston College.
03:08An all-around athlete in high school competing in discus and the triple jump, Donovan Ezraku
03:14developed into one of college football's elite pass rushers.
03:17He's extremely polished for a young player and is more than just a talented athlete.
03:22He'll make a difference early on as a pass rusher, but scouts believe he can develop into
03:26a good run defender as well thanks to his work ethic and intelligence.
03:31Donovan Ezraku, 21 tackles for loss, 16 and a half sacks as an All-American who led the
03:39conference in both of those categories last year.
03:42That's the pick I would love.
03:43Danny, the pick you would like?
03:45For the record, I would like Ezraku an awful lot too.
03:47I'd be happy with that.
03:48I worry he goes a pick or two in front of Washington.
03:50This is what I would like.
03:52You'll see a theme in my picks.
03:53There's some speed going on.
03:54Maxwell Hairston, cornerback, Kentucky.
04:00Limited to only seven games last season due to a shoulder injury, Maxwell Hairston still
04:05made his presence felt, being named second team All-SCC.
04:09He can be a game-changing defender as he tied the Kentucky school record with three career
04:14pick sixes.
04:15He has great footwork, can change direction quickly, and has a keen ability in route recognition.
04:20At 183 pounds, scouts believe he'll need to put on some weight, but his natural nose
04:24for the football makes him an asset for any defense.
04:29To me, I would like that.
04:32I'm hoping for a weapon, hoping for an edge.
04:34I just worry that the board won't shake that way, and Hairston to me is kind of the next
04:37best of that group.
04:38Maybe not a pure outside guy just yet, but the speed jumps off the page.
04:42The athleticism jumps off the page.
04:44I'm excited.
04:44That's somebody I can work with for a position I think they're not as good at as they think
04:49they are.
04:49But it feels to me like that's a very real possibility.
04:53I think so, too.
04:54The later we get into the process, and it seems like a lot of the defensive ends could
04:58go, the more it seems like corner's going to be of value there at 29, and he could be
05:03a guy high on their radar.
05:04So you might get what you like.
05:07Not what you need, not what you love, but what you like.
05:09What you like.
05:09Tonight.
05:10Time for what I would like.
05:11I would like a weapon.
05:13I would like Travion Henderson, the running back, out of Ohio State.
05:17I would like that pick a lot, even if it's a little bit early.
05:19That's fine.
05:20I would like a wide receiver.
05:22You mentioned Golden, who I think will be gone.
05:24What about Henderson's teammate?
05:25An 80-catch, 1,000-yard, 10-touchdown route runner who could automatically come in here
05:31at about 6'1 and 203.
05:34Play and help right away.
05:35Emeka Ibuka, wide receiver, Ohio State.
05:39Bill Howard, front man and a pistol behind center, Seth McLaughlin, hits the snap, takes
05:44the handoff, rolls to his right, throws toward the goal line, caught, touchdown, is grabbing
05:48the ball and being slung out of bounds after making the grab, Emeka Ibuka.
05:52Running the 40-yard dash in 4.3 seconds, Emeka Ibuka has straight-line speed that strikes
05:58fear in opposing defenses.
06:00A sure-handed pass catcher, he racked up 81 receptions and 10 touchdowns last season,
06:05helping lead the Buckeyes to a national title win.
06:08His ceiling at the next level will depend on his ability to separate from more physical
06:12corners, but Ibuka is an all-around receiving talent.
06:16Danny sleeps on Emeka Ibuka.
06:19Darius sleeps on Emeka Ibuka.
06:21Clary definitely sleeps on Emeka Ibuka.
06:24Two 1,000-yard seasons, 1150 and 10 touchdowns in 2022, and then 80 catches with a 10-touchdown
06:331,000-yard season last year for Ohio State.
06:37I would really like that pick.
06:38Your boy wants offensive skill help.
06:43Get me some speed.
06:44Yeah, definitely would not mind that at all.
06:46A little bit less flash, I think, for Egbuka, but just, you know, basically going to the league
06:50to be a complimentary No. 2 receiver, ain't nothing wrong with that at the end of the
06:53first round.
06:54All right, so so far, I would love Donovan Ezraku, Edge.
06:57I would like Emeka Ibuka-wide receiver.
07:00I would love Matthew Golden, and I would like Maxwell Hairston.
07:03So we're feeding out of similar meal plans here.
07:06All right, let's get to the picks that we would hate Washington making if they stick at 29.
07:10You already said one of the names that I would hate as someone that you would like.
07:14I would hate Travion Henderson.
07:15I would hate this one just as much.
07:17Omari on Hampton, running back, North Carolina.
07:21Every play of the last two drives has been a run to Hampton.
07:25Here's a shovel pass to Hampton, and he's freeing over the field.
07:2825, angling to the near sideline, and for the fifth time today, Hampton's into the end zone.
07:35Touchdown, Carolina.
07:37An explosive runner with a leap burst, Omari on Hampton tallied over 2,000 yards and 17
07:43touchdowns as a junior at North Carolina.
07:46At 6 foot and 220 pounds, Hampton has the ideal size to be a three-down back.
07:52He's a violent runner, but also doubles as a reliable pass catcher and is a physical pass
07:58protector.
07:59Hampton profiles as an immediate impact playmaker out of the backfield.
08:03What are you doing, Danny Houtier?
08:05I think he's good.
08:06This is like the guy at the fantasy draft that when everyone else starts the positional run,
08:11you go, oh, I should probably do that, and you get terrible value.
08:14We shouldn't be taking a running back in the first round.
08:17You shouldn't do it unless you're ready to compete at the highest level and got no other
08:20holes.
08:21If you're Kansas City, go ahead and do it.
08:22If you're Philadelphia, go ahead and do it.
08:24Not that they need them, but they could.
08:25There is too much value at running back in this draft.
08:30I'm telling you, I'd be way better off taking a couple of the players that I mentioned
08:34previously at 29, be it a defensive end, be it a corner, be it a wideout, and going with
08:39a Damien Martinez from Miami, who were like facial tootin, who we had on the show in the
08:44mid rounds.
08:44I'd rather have Caleb Johnson from Iowa, who faced nothing but nine and 10 man boxes for
08:50a group that couldn't throw and who's making, who's getting touched behind the line of scrimmage
08:53every down and still went for 1,600 yards.
08:56There are way too many good running backs to waste a late first round pick on one when
09:00there are too many good pieces that you can get with some acquisitions in round three
09:03and round four.
09:04The good news for you is Amarion Hampton will be gone 15 picks before Washington.
09:07I wanted to do Henderson, but we didn't have a sound report.
09:10Hampton's going to go in the middle of the first round because he's unbelievable.
09:14Ask the Lions if they're upset that they took Jameer Gibbs.
09:16The answer's no.
09:17Ask the Falcons if they're bothered that they used the first round on B. John Robinson.
09:21Obviously not.
09:22Ask the Eagles how they felt about winning the Super Bowl last year with former top five pick
09:26Saquon Barkley running for 2K.
09:29Absolutely not.
09:29You can find really, really good players like Amarion Hampton.
09:331,500 yards, 1,600 yards the last two years.
09:36Which of his 30 touchdown rushes in the last two seasons do you like the most?
09:40And he can catch the ball to the backfield.
09:42It's the thing you like.
09:42It's the thing I like.
09:43He is an athlete, man.
09:44I mean, I just wake up at night thinking about a time when he's my starting running back,
09:49but he's not going to be there, so it does not matter.
09:52But you're taking some crazy pills on that one.
09:55Here's something I would hate.
09:56Shemar Stewart, defensive end, Texas A&M.
10:02This one's third and nine for the Aggie 41.
10:05Bazelak, pressure off the middle.
10:07They got him.
10:08They got him.
10:09Shemar Stewart got him at midfield.
10:11An outstanding athlete at 6'5 and 267 pounds.
10:16He ran a 4'5", 40-yard dash with a 40-inch vertical and a 10-foot broad jump.
10:22His sack totals don't jump off the page, but he racked up 39 total pressures over 315 defensive
10:28snaps in his final season at College Station.
10:31He's also drawn comparisons physically to four-time All-Pro Myles Garrett.
10:36He'll need to refine his pass rush technique, but Stewart has tantalizing upside.
10:42I can't believe they found a Shemar Stewart highlight.
10:45He doesn't finish a whole lot of plays.
10:46That's the highlight.
10:47I mean, that's the one.
10:48So I'm leaving myself open to you telling me I'm crazy here, and I understand that.
10:53But I just need you to make more football plays.
10:56When you have a three-year track record as an edge with four-and-a-half total sacks combined,
11:02one-and-a-half in all three seasons, and combined in three years, 12 TFLs, that's not enough.
11:09The measurables are unbelievable.
11:11The size is central casting.
11:13He looks like an action figure.
11:14I get it.
11:15The combine, ridiculous.
11:18He's a football player, right?
11:19Football player.
11:20I need you to make some football plays.
11:21And the pressure rate and some of that stuff is pretty good.
11:24There's a spot for him.
11:25I'm not taking him in the late second or the third or something.
11:29But I'd put him here, Danny, because I don't want them reaching for an edge at 29 just to satisfy the requirement.
11:36We need one.
11:37He's there.
11:38Let's take him.
11:39I don't even think he will be there.
11:40I'll bet you somebody takes him because he's such a tantalizing athlete before that.
11:44But I don't want to take a player that didn't put up really quality college production.
11:49This is my area of weakness when it comes to evals and players and things like that.
11:53I would rather use my axiom.
11:55I'd rather explain away at inflated production at a lower level or something like that than try to defend why someone didn't put up stats at all.
12:04I understand he's a crazy athlete.
12:06I get the scheme watered some things down.
12:08You could do that with five sacks.
12:10You could do that with like 15 TFLs or something.
12:12But the fact that there was so little in those various columns when you're counting up the stats, I can't do it.
12:18I can't.
12:19That's what we'd love, like, and hate.
12:21Tweet us.
12:21Let us know what you would love and hate to see the commanders do at 29 at Grant H. Paulson at Funny Danny.
