00:10I'm feeling all right all right all right sometimes I have to brush some off just to
00:14be sure Brad how are you man I'm doing great man how are you I'm doing pretty good it's good to see
00:21your faces I was told I got 10 minutes or so so we'll just chit chat a little bit you guys are
00:27going out on tour look at you huh it's gonna be a fun tour man Kevin you've been by the rat a
00:36number of times but Brad we haven't seen you in some time um and and it's always I I remember
00:45something back in the day Brad your band got me the highest I've ever been before a tradewind show
00:55in in Seabright New Jersey it was one of those psychosis highs where you're afraid to be in
01:02public anymore I really don't know how I smoked that much weed before I went on stage man I don't know
01:09I really don't uh I finally ended up getting into the venue and and finding a spot in the back
01:17um you also taught me how to eat uh shrimp correctly oh awesome awesome Kevin do you have
01:27you learned how to eat shrimp correctly I will not yet I can't wait for Brad to show me how to eat
01:32have you guys you guys haven't toured before yet have you we haven't we've played a bunch of shows
01:39in the past just over the years together but we've never toured before so we're really looking forward
01:44to it the songs that you're playing from this album Brad away from the sun they've been around for a
01:54while can you guys talk to me about the the the longevity of your art and how that makes you feel
02:05I think that it makes me feel amazing and in I'm just thankful for the longevity of it and I think it
02:13and it's by the grace of God and and that we just write songs that people can identify with
02:19and I think for both these bands I think both bands could go by the same for me I think they
02:25could go by the same token as either either band you could break the songs down and play them acoustic
02:31and they still have their integrity they're still good songs and I think really great songs not every
02:38great song but 90 of great songs should be able to be played on acoustic guitar with a singer and
02:44maybe a cajon or something you know yeah what do you think of that Kevin and the longevity of the
02:50the music you created still having meaning to this day not yeah you haven't been creating music recently
02:59but you know you're going out with Candlebox and the the songs are still around that we got turned on to
03:06when you first came out yeah no I I agree with Brad I mean I think that you know um
03:13we we've written songs that people can make their own it it's it's a story of their life in some way
03:22shape or form there's always something that they connected to I think there's you know there's
03:27sincerity and honesty that comes from from songwriting that that rock and roll bands um you know I mean
03:33you can use anybody from journey to Bon Jovi to you know Sabbath any of any of those bands there's
03:40always that song that just just draws you right in and and I think it's because you're connected to
03:47it when you write it as an artist you know Brad wrote kryptonite in you know whatever 15 20 minutes
03:51in algebra class I wrote cover me in about 10 minutes at a at a bar next to my rehearsal studio
03:58um you know when when that song comes to your mind and lyrically you write it down it's if it happens
04:04fast it generally is so much from your heart that um it's it's kind of hard to to avoid it um and then
04:15there's other songs that we've written that don't have that uh emotion attached to it but you know when
04:19you have that song like far behind or cover me or or you or he calls home from our debut album or uh you
04:26know uh here without you kryptonite um from three doors down they're just so connected man that um
04:32it I think it you they were destined to be heard now if you'd have told me that 30 years later that
04:38far behind would still be in a constant rotation for a lot of rock and roll stations out there I
04:43wouldn't have believed you but um thank god it has been and and and I'm so lucky that um that that
04:49happened for us you know I I am I'm so looking forward to this tour I've been uh looking forward to
04:55touring with three doors downs for for about five years now we've been talking about it and and I'm
05:00just so glad that it's happened now this is going to be a show that people aren't going to forget if
05:04you come see this this show live you're going to walk out of there with the biggest smile on your
05:08face Brad said that before and I'm going to keep using it because it's the truth man it's it's going
05:13be three hours of just amazing rock and roll songs and stories that that are gonna people are
05:19gonna walk away just never never forgetting this show Brad do you remember any of those writing
05:24experiences for the songs on away from the sun that stand out to you whether it was a 15 minute
05:31uh wow I'm just a conduit for this melody or I'm a conduit for these words hitting this page
05:38uh do you remember any of those episodes even to this day absolutely I remember with on the
05:45song away from the sun itself uh you know we had that the guys had come up with that guitar part and
05:52just sitting there playing through because I the better life record was the last time I played
05:58drums on on a record or in the only time I played drums on a record but uh I wrote we were writing
06:04away from the sun I still wrote I've still played the drums during that writing process and we just
06:08sitting there playing through the the uh the song away from the sun musically and you know we pretty
06:15much had it uh verse and chorus and I just had as like sometimes the song won't be written the way
06:22it is and like this it'll just come out and the first line of that song that we wrote was I all I
06:29had was a wave of the sun I didn't really have anything else it was just and when it that part
06:34would come around I would just keep singing it and saying man I need to find some words and I don't
06:40I don't know if it needs to be that or not Matt or uh you know guitar player uh he's like man I like
06:46I like I mean go with away from the sun build around Matt and I built around that and it became
06:51probably the truest song for me that I ever wrote and uh you know I remember writing here without you
06:57sitting in the hotel room and kind of inspired just by the idea of being away from home and and uh
07:04and just being on tour for so long yeah and and just and never never being home you know and uh
07:12so yeah I definitely remember those instances from from that pretty vividly you know you uh you brought
07:19up a little a point that I wanted to ask you about you are going to be away from home for a while
07:24what creature comforts are you taking with you on the road now that you couldn't take uh you know
07:33back in the day I'm still pretty basic as long as I can bring my pillows I got my pillows and
07:40wherever I go my pillows go if I go the other side of the planet my pillows are coming with me
07:46yeah now the time it was sometimes we got to fly somewhere we'd just be going somewhere and
07:52they'd be like dude you got a big old suitcase I'm like well half of it's just my pillows
07:55the other half of it like my shoes and a couple of shirts and some jeans or whatever but
08:01I gotta have my pillows I gotta I gotta I gotta big old head it needs a lot of support
08:06what what are you bringing you bringing your pets or what are you bringing
08:12no I don't bring my pets I bring my own sheets for my butt for my bunk I bring my own pillow
08:17my pillow is flown around I've had my pillow now for about 28 years it's flown around the world with
08:23me several times um and then of course you know there's it's a feathered down pillow man I mean
08:29you find that pillow you can't it's just it's the it's the only thing that you can take with
08:35you man you just you know you gotta have it and you know it's like my wife she'll you know she'll
08:40make sure to lay her head on it so I get to you know smell her hair on my pillow and stuff like that
08:44but you know it's it's those kinds of things that remind you of home and and that that make you feel
08:49comfortable you know it's really difficult to be on the road for three and four months so you want
08:52those comforts and and of course you know your cell phone but music I mean I take so much music I load my
08:58phone up with music because a lot of times the wi-fi doesn't work on the bus so you can't really
09:03stream it you know um and then of course you download the movies that you need and you want
09:07to plug those into the tv so it's all those kinds of things that can take away the monotony of the day
09:12and help you escape um you know that and then you know maybe a fold-up bike or a or an electric
09:17scooter or something like that you know right on all right we're we're in pillow moment that's we're
09:22doing pillow talk i read this article the other day or not another day not long ago though that
09:30said when a pillow if you can fold a pillow in half and it stays folded in half it's time to replace
09:35it i was like are you kidding me that's the best time no that's just that broke in if your pillow
09:42does not fold in half and stay that's not no no well done i look forward to seeing you guys on this
09:52tour i understand that uh uh you know we'll have a relationship to present this show and i appreciate
09:59that effort uh and i can't wait to hear these songs uh brought out live at the art center this
10:05summer it's going to be a grand time thank you carl
