The EBC says an important step has been taken in giving Returning Officers the authority they need to carry out their role in the 2025 General Election.

00:00The Elections and Boundaries Commission, the ABC, has announced that 41 persons who were
00:06appointed to serve as returning officers for the April 28, 2025 general election were presented
00:13with writs of election issued by President Christine Kangaloo.
00:18The ABC said these writs give the returning officers the authority to cause a poll to
00:22be taken in their respective electoral districts on behalf of the commission.
00:28The ABC said the returning officers were presented with their writs by the commission's chairman,
00:33Mark Ramkerrisinghe, and ABC Commissioner Carla Drayton-Edwards, which were transmitted
00:38in accordance with Election Rule 3 of the Representation of the People Act.
00:43The event took place at the Sipriani College of Labour and Co-operative Studies in Val
00:47Seine on Thursday, March 20.
00:51The ABC's statement was sent to media houses on Friday, March 21.
00:56The ABC said Chief Election Officer Ferdinand Siskope commended attendees for their dedication
01:02to the electoral process and highlighted the vital role they play in upholding democratic
01:07principles, stressing that fairness and accountability are essential in strengthening public confidence
01:14and ensuring the credibility of free and fair elections.
01:18The ABC said Assistant Chief Election Officer Pablo Oguist also emphasised the theme of
01:24building bridges and fostering trust in the electoral process, while a motivational speech
01:30was given by John C. Maxwell Certified Coach Luke Kwamena, who emphasised the importance
01:36of leadership, personal growth and a strong sense of duty in upholding the integrity of
01:41the electoral process.
01:43On Thursday, the same day the returning officers received their writs of election, Prime Minister
01:48Stuart Young announced during his first post-Cabinet media conference that invitations had been
01:54extended to the Commonwealth Secretariat and the US-based Carter Centre to provide
02:00observers for the general election in Trinidad and Tobago, following a request by opposition
02:05leader Kamala Prasad Bissessa for international observers.
02:10Prime Minister Young also said CARICOM observers were on their way.
02:14However, the Prime Minister said the ABC has always carried out free and fair elections
02:20in Trinidad and Tobago.
