00:00On Monday, the frustrated Maxi Taxi drivers held a demonstration calling for better maintenance
00:07of the Soundry Grandie Maxi Hub.
00:10They cited infrastructural and water issues.
00:13Today, the Minister says, the National Transportation Plan will be laid before Parliament on Tuesday.
00:20That National Transportation Plan makes consideration of land, sea and air a significant part of
00:29that land.
00:30It has to do with how we operate the Maxi Taxi, the routes that they operate and how
00:35we treat the transportation on the whole going forward.
00:39He says there is also an upgraded Maxi Taxi policy and once approved, it will assist in
00:46dealing with the drivers in a more formalized manner.
00:50Minister Sinanon also addressed issues previously raised by Maxi Taxi drivers over transferring
00:56ownership of priority bus route passes to the next of kin.
01:00The system as it operates now, we have a listing, so if you want to go, you apply to the Minister,
01:06you go on the listing and it's based on the number system, so if you're number five, number
01:12six, you can't get it before you get it at number five.
01:16But there are some questions, you know, that people want to keep it, but if you could pass
01:21on the pass to your family, that is really not how it operates.
01:25We are working with them to have that sorted out and I'm hoping that my district will have
01:30an answer on that.
01:32On a separate issue, Minister Sinanon notes speeding on the roads as a continuous problem.
01:38He tells us while the demerit points have led to substantial reductions in speeding
01:44offences, there is still need for stricter enforcement.
01:48He is urging motorists and commuters to respect the rules of the road network to prevent loss
01:54of life.
01:55Our goal is to reduce road fatality, bring it down to zero.
01:59It is something that is achievable.
02:01Trinidad and Tobago is one of the few countries in the world that has achieved the first goal,
02:08which was to reduce it by 60%.
02:10We were one of the countries to achieve it and we continue to be on that path.
