Plans for new Leeds McDonald’s in Stanningley

A McDonald’s drive-through and restaurant could open in a west Leeds community after plans were submitted to Leeds City Council.

00:00Could this be the next site for another Leeds McDonald's restaurant and dry-through?

00:05This vacant land, just off Town Street in Stanningley, used to be part of a former metal recycling plant,

00:11and it's been eyed up by the fast food retailer.

00:14A public consultation was launched last December on the scheme,

00:17which is believed will create 130 construction jobs and 70 jobs for part and full-time employees if and when it opens.

00:25Now, a formal planning application is being considered by Leeds City Council for the site in the West Leeds community.

00:32A McDonald's design report said the development proposals have been subject to a range of pre-application consultation.

00:39Road safety concerns were discussed at a public meeting,

00:43and the proposed opening hours were reduced from 24 hours a day to between 6am and midnight.

00:50McDonald's have been keen to highlight the potential economic boost for nearby businesses,

00:55and the scheme would include 34 parking spaces along with cycle bays and electric vehicle charging points.

01:02The report also said that the site is in an accessible location that is adequately served by public transport

01:09and is accessible for pedestrians and cyclists.

01:12The proposed McDonald's would be close to a separate development of 40 homes by property firm Red Star Robinson,

01:19who McDonald's have been working closely with in the formulation and evolution of proposals across both sites.

01:25No passers-by that we spoke to wanted to appear on camera to share their views,

01:29but there definitely seems to be a mixed reaction.

01:32Some feel a restaurant on the site would be better than what's there now,

01:36while others cited traffic concerns and the close proximity of three other McDonald's outlets.

01:41A final decision will be made in the coming weeks.
