Should Texans be interested in signing Davante Adams?

Davante Adams is on the market in a very thin free agency class. Should the Texans be interested? The Drive talked about it here.

00:00Sources say that the Jets are continuing their overhaul as they bring in their new head coach

00:07and changing up their entire staff and going in a new direction.

00:13They are releasing their wide receiver who they traded a ton for

00:18in the middle of last season, Devontae Adams.

00:22He is going to be on the block.

00:24Clint, we've talked since the season ended.

00:28One of the priority spots for the Texans is another receiver or two

00:34to go along with Niko Collins.

00:36Because right now it's Niko, it's Jon Mechie, and it's Hutch.

00:41How would you feel – we saw Debo was going, and we know you really liked the Debo thing.

00:45I did too. Many of you didn't. Some of you did.

00:49What about Devontae Adams, 32 years old, will be 33 in December.

00:56How would you feel about that potential move?

00:59Because I've got to believe there's got to be at least a conversation

01:02if the Texans were in on Debo Samuel.

01:06I would at least believe they've turned over a stone to look at that one.

01:10What's your thoughts on that?

01:13Even really close to going to happen. I don't think they're going to even entertain it.

01:16You don't?

01:17No, I do not.

01:18But I do like the thought of pairing him with C.J. Stroud.

01:24And more importantly – or not more importantly, but as importantly –

01:28pairing him, him being Devontae Adams, with Nick Caley.

01:33A lot of the guys that we talk about – Diggs was one of them.

01:38The Cooper Cup would be one of them. I think Debo Samuel would be one of them.

01:44These are all guys that you need to move, you need to get creative with,

01:51you need to create for them.

01:57And that's great if you've got a good play designer and a good creator

02:02and somebody that has the feel and the ability to call those plays.

02:06If you want to simplify things for C.J. Stroud and Nick Caley,

02:11you put Devontae Adams opposite Nico Collins.

02:15What you have now is you've got two guys, big-bodied players,

02:19on both sides of the quarterback.

02:22And you're daring the defensive coordinator to close the middle of the field

02:28and add an extra defender to the box to stop the run

02:31or to stop the receivers over the tight end over the middle or whatever.

02:35You're daring them to do something other than a two-safety type defense

02:40at that point.

02:41You've got two guys outside that can beat you over the top.

02:46You've got one that's probably the best back-shoulder-catching wide receiver

02:49we've ever seen in Devontae Adams.

02:53You've got guys underneath with the slants, the quick game stuff.

02:57And I would say it's a move to me that would really be playing into C.J. Stroud,

03:04the pocket passer.

03:06We want to talk about C.J. Stroud and the legs and this and that.

03:09C.J. Stroud is not a guy that you design around his legs.

03:12C.J. Stroud is a guy that in a perfect world you set his ass back there

03:15seven to nine yards behind the center in a nice clean pocket,

03:19and you let him cook.

03:21You let him dice it up.

03:23It would simplify things for Nick Caley.

03:26It would simplify things for C.J. Stroud.

03:29It would play into the strengths of C.J. Stroud.

03:34I think it would be an unbelievable compliment opposite Nico Collins.

03:39So you like the thought of it?

03:43Assuming the money, because, I mean, look, he's damn near making it.

03:46Not the money, but what you would make it worth.

03:49Could I like Devontae Adams in Houston opposite Nico Collins?

03:53Absolutely.

03:54I'm going to get real good and turned on over there.

03:57You roll those two guys out there, I think C.J. Stroud gets better,

04:00Nick Caley, the biggest gamble that you've made,

04:03probably to damn sure in the D'Amico Ryan's era,

04:05the biggest gamble that you've made is Nick Caley coming in

04:08as the offensive coordinator.

04:09He gets better.

04:10Joe Mixon gets better.

04:12Your offensive line again gets better because now you've got guys that,

04:15I dare you to show me pressure and vacate the half safety

04:22to either Nico's side or Devontae's side.

04:25Yeah, play man in the red zone.

04:27You've got guys that can win one-on-one with their body,

04:33not with better than a lot of wide receivers do.

04:36So, yeah, hell yeah.

04:38From the text line is another Stefan Diggs without the attitude.

04:43Ending in 7-2, expound on that.

04:46Give me a little bit more of that.

04:47What do you mean by that, that he is aging or somebody that is productive?

04:54I'm just trying to get a little bit more from that text.

04:57I encourage everybody to go back

04:58and when New York got hot last year late in the season,

05:02look at some of the way he was playing.

05:04Look at some of the catches he was making.

05:06Go back and look in 23 with the Raiders when he wasn't with a knee issue.

05:12Some of the catches that he was making with freaking Aiden O'Connell

05:16and whoever else throwing the football to him.

05:18Yeah, I could get real excited about another big-bodied receiver

05:26being here with CJ and Nick Caley.

05:29Real quick from where you started, why do you think you don't have –

05:34it seems like your percentage level

05:38and thought that this could happen is extremely low.

05:42After everything you explained about the fit

05:45and how that would make this offense look,

05:47why do you think they wouldn't be involved in it

05:49if they were involved with Debo?

05:51Well, I think he's going to command $25 million a year in a multi-year deal,

05:57and I don't think Houston's going to commit to that.

05:5932, 33 years old, do you think Devontae Adams still gets that?

06:02I mean, he was 20, what, 22 two contracts ago.

06:06He was 28 this contract a year.

06:09Yeah, I think he's probably going – yeah, I think he fetches 25.

06:14The way the league's trending, everybody's getting paid more.

06:17I think he fetches 25 a year for two years.

06:21Yeah, I mean, I don't know what the market looks like.

06:23Obviously, the market – whoever needs a wide receiver of that level,

06:26it'll come to fruition.

06:28But you think it's money and multiple years?

06:30Yeah, I think – no, I wouldn't be opposed to it.

06:33I wouldn't be opposed to it.

06:35I mean, you got a steal in Nico Collins' contract right now,

06:38and I mean, you overpaid Dalton Schultz and Laramie Tunsil.

06:42Those are the two guys that are eating up your cap space

06:44on the offensive side of the football.

06:45Everything else is very reasonable.

06:46Yeah, I mean, I think there's room.

06:47If it's one or two years, then that's maybe something that they may be into.
