Transcript
00:00The Lost Tribe family is set to kick off their carnival season with an event this Friday,
00:07marking the first major celebration under the tribe umbrella.
00:10February 14th will see a unique convergence of love and revelry, as Valentine's Day coincides
00:16with Lost Tribe's highly anticipated Fete Yard.
00:19This year's theme, Stick Fighter, is designed to immerse patrons in one of Trinidad's most
00:24dynamic cultural traditions.
00:26Kalmiki Miraj, Lost Tribe's Executive Creative Director, spoke with TV6 News about the event.
00:32The whole premise behind the party is really to be able to give patrons the opportunity
00:36to get themselves involved and immersed within different facets of the carnival culture.
00:41Yes, we like to party, yes we like to shake our fence, yes we like to lime, but at the
00:45same time to find through the marketing, through the campaign work, and through other programs
00:50that we have that led towards the party, for them to be able to find a way to immerse themselves
00:54in stick fighting culture.
00:55The event will transform the space into a guile, where attendees will be split into
00:59red and blue factions, mirroring the competitive nature of the sport.
01:04The night will also feature DJs squaring off against mic men and artists engaged in musical
01:10face-offs.
01:11And of course, there will be a face-off between Kambule groups setting the stage for an electric
01:17night of cultural fusion.
01:19This year marks Lost Tribe's 10th anniversary, eight of those years spent on the road, with
01:25two years of growth and reflection during the pandemic.
01:28Mirage acknowledges that the pandemic, while challenging, forced the team to adapt, learn,
01:34and push their creative boundaries.
01:36Part of the celebration of the 10 years is recognizing our growth that we have had during
01:40the pandemic.
01:41It took us through a wringer as creative people, as carnival people, when our industry was
01:45brought to a screeching halt.
01:47But we grew so much in that time, we learned so much about ourselves.
01:50This resilience is reflected in their 2025 theme, Lost in Time, a concept that not only
01:56commemorates a decade of Lost Tribe, but also explores the broader human experience over
02:02the past 10 years.
02:04Well 10 years of Lost Tribe has been 10 years of chaos, 10 years of learning, 10 years of
02:09jamming, 10 years of everything in between.
02:13We are a very loud camp, we are a camp of learning experiences, we are a camp of personalities
02:18and very big voices.
02:20So what and how brought us to the 10 years is a combination of effort, determination,
02:28and honestly, praise, because I didn't really know, you know, we reached.
02:32The costumes this year are deeply rooted in the history of Lost Tribe, with each section
02:37inspired by a previous year.
02:39He says that designers like Solange Govaya and Sean Donraj, among others, have created
02:45pieces that capture the essence of past themes while offering a fresh artistic interpretation.
02:52From intricate charms representing past sections to orchid-inspired designs, each costume is
02:57a tribute to Lost Tribe's creative journey.
03:00Lost Tribe has always been more than a carnival band, it's a lifestyle brand with a commitment
03:06to storytelling, sustainability, and social responsibility.
03:11Sustainability has been a pillar of the organization, and they have actively worked with partners
03:15to promote recycling and eco-conscious initiatives.
03:19As the season progresses, Lost Tribe plans to unveil new sustainability efforts for their
03:24events and road operations, reinforcing their dedication to a greener future.
03:29Additionally, Lost Tribe has expanded its reach by partnering with Tobago Festivals
03:34for a special Carnival Concert on Carnival Monday and Tuesday.
03:39Our Carnival Concert, which is our concert we throw in the park on Monday and Tuesday,
03:43is a taste of Tobago this year.
03:44So you are going to see aspects of Tobago heritage culture, Tobago soca artists, Tobago
03:49DJs are going to be performing in the park for you, alongside all our other soca artists
03:54that you know and love throughout the road experience over those two days.
03:58Lost Tribe's presence on the road remains a spectacle, with their storytelling unfolding
04:03not just through their costumes, but through their stage presentations.
04:08This year, the band has integrated scripting and choreography into their showcase, with
04:14the design team collaborating with Bridget Wilson to bring movement and theatrics to
04:19their presentation.
04:21On the stage this year, where you will see that manifest in our presentation, that is
04:26being designed by a design team and choreographed by Bridget Wilson, how she is going to take
04:32us thought-wise into what we look like movement-wise on the stage, I cannot say because we are
04:36still working on it right now, but we have a vision, I drew it out, sat with her and
04:42we have started meeting, meeting, this year we are taking it a little bit differently,
04:45we have scripting and stuff as well, so I look forward to sharing that with you.
04:49Mirage emphasises that Lost Tribe strikes a balance between revelry and cultural reverence.
04:54In today's carnival, and I am careful not to call it modern carnival, I say in today's
04:59carnival intentionally, we live the best of the modern carnival road experience, whilst
05:05paying homage to and enjoying the best of our storytelling heritage.
05:09As they step into their second decade, Lost Tribe remains a bold force in carnival, celebrating
05:15its past, shaping its future, and bringing revelers along for the journey.
05:20Whether on the road, on the stage, or at their signature events, Lost Tribe continues to
05:25redefine what it means to be lost in time, fully present in the moment, yet deeply connected
05:32to history and tradition.
