Former Assistant Chief Fire officer David Thomas has been chosen by the screening committee of the Tobago People's Party (TPP) to contest the Tobago East seat in the upcoming general elections.

Mr. Thomas told TV6 News he was elated yet humbled by the news, which came via release from the TPP on Monday.

The screening of candidates took place last Thursday into Friday morning at the Shaw Park Complex. More in this Elizabeth Williams report.

00:00A music truck announced the arrival of David Thomas at last Thursday's screening.
00:06Then, Tomo, as he is popularly called, described the hour-long interview by the screening committee
00:12of the TPP as phenomenal.
00:14I must say that I had a phenomenal experience in the interview room.
00:21The interview tested all of you, where you were, where you have been and where you intend
00:29to go.
00:32It spoke to your character now and your character then.
00:36It spoke to the genuine nature of you in the Tobago space.
00:43Mr. Thomas said he presented a package to the screening committee to ensure he secured
00:48victory.
00:50It questioned my popularity.
00:53It questioned my arrival here.
00:59I was able to provide a package to the interview panel that can not do otherwise but leave
01:09them totally impressed.
01:12And impressed the screening committee was, as David Thomas is now the TPP's Tobago East
01:18candidate for the upcoming general elections.
01:21I feel like an eagle, right?
01:26And I'm ready to soar and continue to affect the Tobago space in such a positive manner.
01:34His plans for the people of Tobago East?
01:37The people of Tobago East will, from my leadership, benefit from critical developments.
01:48They would benefit from David Joseph Thomas being true to his name.
01:53You know David is associated with kings, Joseph with governors, and Thomas teaches me not
01:58to doubt.
02:01And I am going to make sure that that is manifested in the east of Tobago.
02:06But I might tell you that I am very concerned about the overall development of Tobago because
02:12I have to see myself not just as a representative of Tobago East.
02:16I have to see myself as a representative of Tobago.
02:21And based on what I am forecasting, I see myself as a major decision-maker in the politics
02:28of Trinidad and Tobago in the not-too-distant future.
02:31The screening committee continues its deliberations on the selection of a candidate for Tobago
02:36West.
