00:00The announcement was made on Friday during a media conference by the Tobago Festivals
00:05Commission at the Shorepark Complex, and according to Police Sergeant Emmanuel York, safety measures
00:11would be enhanced with the combined efforts of the Defence Force.
00:16We would have assistance from the Defence Force, yes, and as happens for all carnival
00:25celebrations from TAMI Memorial, the police officers have a leave restriction from the
00:33Friday before carnival.
00:36So we'll be all hands on deck where the carnival celebration will be properly secured,
00:44as well as outside the carnival areas.
00:49We know that we have a cruise ship on Carnival Tuesday.
00:53The different districts would be taking charge of security in their districts beside what
01:03is happening for the carnival.
01:04Assistant Secretary Tourism and Culture Niall George said the state of emergency has not
01:09affected Tobago's plans for a successful carnival with a full calendar of events, including
01:16the THA's Inter-Department Carnival Competition at the parade grounds of the Dwight York Stadium
01:22on February 20th, the Junior Parade of the Bands in Scarborough and Roxborough, J'ouvert,
01:28the National Medium Band Panorama Finals on February 23rd, and the return of the Miss
01:35Wynwood Afro Queen Show in Roxborough on February 26th.
01:40In terms of safety, where carnival is concerned, it's always under the remit of the security
01:46team, which would involve fire, health, team, police, defense force, based on it also being
01:56in a state of emergency and it's a national carnival, we know there would need to be an
02:01increased presence of security.
02:03Tobago has a track record of having very safe carnivals, and we expect the very capable
02:08security teams to control that situation and maintain a very safe environment.
02:13No glass bottles would be allowed at carnival activities, according to police.
02:18The glass bottles, there's an order made for that already that no glass bottles would be
02:25allowed within any carnival function, no glass bottles.
02:30Anybody found breaching this would face the consequences of the law.
02:37Chairman of the Tobago Mass Band Leaders Association, Diane McCrummon, said small, medium, and large
02:45bands have already started registering.
