Prepping for power grid failure

AccuWeather Meteorologist Tony Laubach speaks with experts on how to prepare for a power grid failure.

00:00When bad weather causes the power grid to go down, having no light in your home is just one of your problems.

00:05Basic city services that rely on electricity, like public transportation, could also go down.

00:11It could be the trash. It could be water supply being affected. It could be a lot of different things.

00:15Here are some tips for when the power grid fails. The first is to have a way to see.

00:20Personally, and everyone that I know, I'm basically saying, hey, keep a flashlight in every room of your house.

00:24Next is to have a way to eat.

00:26We start thinking food. You know, how do we keep our food cold? Things that are perishable and things of that nature.

00:31So we're really focusing on inverters, battery backup supplies, things of that nature.

00:36In the event the power outage lasts for several days or even weeks,

00:39having plenty of batteries on hand can keep backup lighting and heating sources going.

00:44All things like battery organizers. You know, most homes should have something like this.

00:48What you see all too often is a drawer full of stuff that is old and been rolling around and just not organized.

00:53You don't know where everything is. In a pack like this, you get something as nice as a battery tester as well,

00:58so you can check your old product.

01:00Lastly, try and conserve the batteries you do have.

01:03Say your electric heater, things of that. Let's get it down as comfortably low as we possibly can,

01:08you know, to conserve on that kind of energy usage as well.

01:10Basically living at the bare minimum of what we're used to.

01:13So instead of living life luxuriously, we really want to take it down to a kind of an uncomfortable level

01:18to make sure we can sustain the time.

01:19These tips can keep you and your family safe when the power grid fails.
