00:00It stars a Margaret, who isn't Margot Robbie, but rather the other Marge from Once Upon

00:04a Time in Hollywood, Margaret Qualley.

00:06Qualley's apparently got the perfect form of somebody who either has body image problems

00:10or is the perfect younger, slender-er body that her co-star Demi Moore pays good money

00:15to attain, ostensibly by taking the substance, hence the title, and hence our association

00:21with an era of unhealthy body imagery in the media.

00:24The pervasive issue of pushing images of ultra-thin women, waifs, high-waist lined thong bikinis,

00:29and low-rise jeans grew out of your parents' need to perfect themselves in the late 80s

00:35and 90s.

00:36This movie reeks of that same nostalgia, even though it seems to be set in no particular

00:40time.

00:41The color scheme and style choices bring together a film that can be described as a dystopian,

00:45Barbie-like art film with a killer, thrilling storyline.

00:48Okay, we're not saying anyone dies in the film.

00:51The trailer does show us, though, both Demi Moore and Qualley's characters in major disarray.

00:57Though, what is the substance, exactly?

00:59Well, it seems like something out of a Requiem for a Dream, but reimagined with a feminist

01:04twist.

01:05That's the kind of stuff that Coralie Farge takes on, known for her work on Revenge, the

01:102017 French film that gets rather spicy.

01:13Revenge is like a fever dream of desert sunsets, neon bikinis, and enough blood to even make

01:18Tarantino flinch.

01:19The plot?

01:20Simple.

01:21Jen, the quintessential hot girl, goes on a getaway with her rich boyfriend and his

01:24two buddies, who mistake this for a frat party gone wrong.

01:28Like very wrong.

01:29Like it's bad, and why would you do this anyway?

01:31But it's like an uncomfortable, totally not consensual sexual scene, which is thankfully

01:35not graphically shown, but is definitely something even the French would call incredibly disturbing.

01:40Anyway, if that weren't enough, Farge kicks her main character while she's down as Jen

01:46gets pushed off a cliff.

01:48Ouch.

01:49Left for dead, she somehow transforms into a vengeful, equipped, and totally jacked warrior

01:52woman, a la Sarah Connor from The Terminator.

01:55It's giving a lot of that.

01:57Visually, the film is like a mix between a Victoria's Secret catalog and a slasher flick,

02:01with its candy-colored lighting and close-ups of blood-spattered bare skin.

02:05You'll never look at slow-motion shower scenes or oranges—yes, oranges—the same way again.

02:10The male gaze?

02:11Well, she flips it on his head, shoves it off a cliff, and brings it back to haunt us

02:14all for participating in this sad, sadistic world of ours.

02:17On a lighter note, can you imagine what the Barbie movie would have been like if Coralie

02:21Farge directed it?

02:22Because I could not.

02:23Though it probably would have been something about being held to unrealistic body standards

02:26and comparing the human psyche to that of a plastic toy molded by men in suits who eat

02:30shrimp while women are forced to walk around in cheeky bikinis and bathers.

02:34Weird.

02:35That sounds like an upcoming movie that stars Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley called The

02:38Substance.

02:39Okay, full circle.

02:40Exploring themes of body, horror, feminism, and societal expectations, much like Farge's

02:44previous work, this film is the beginning of a lovely oeuvre, as they say.

02:49Yeah, that's a body of work.
