The Land’s Last Lot: what you need to know from weaner sales

Livestock editor Rebecca Nadge and jounralist Elka Devney hear from the key agents at the January weaner sales.

00:08I'm journalist Elke Devney.

00:10And I'm livestock editor Rebecca Nagy.

00:12Bec, it's been a mammoth week down in the south of Wiener sales.

00:15How did it all go?

00:16Yeah, it has been a big week.

00:17We attended a lot of these sales in person.

00:19Here's what agents had to say about the results.

00:22It's been an enormous result right through, I would sort of say.

00:26All the cattle sold over and above expectations that we had prior to Christmas, and was very,

00:32very solid with them.

00:33A lot of the northern buyers, very strong, wanting to skew numbers, to go into the feed

00:38they've got in the north.

00:40And the feedlotters were saying sort of went with them, and they were stronger as well.

00:45A yard at about 7,800 all-breed heifers, sales probably held up okay.

00:50Heifers back to bulls, good-weighted, black heifers, well-bred heifers in the 350s and

00:5460s.

00:55And then everything after that, if they were black, they were 320s and 30s plus, didn't

01:00matter how heavy they were.

01:01A few little tigers at the end, about 280s and 90s, but even, you know, coloured heifers,

01:06sort of 310s to 20s, we're quite pleased with how the day's gone.

01:10Well, I think everyone's left with a sombre feeling on what we heard last week.

01:13Like our better calves opened up at 350, 360, but, you know, they're only 320, 330 kilos.

01:19And once we got off these lead drafts and got into the 290 to 320 kilo calves.

01:25Feeding become a little bit erratic.

01:26Today we yarded just shy of 2,900 cattle, and that consisted of Euro steers, Euro heifers,

01:34very good run of Angus heifers, and some Heriper heifers in that also.

01:37Generally, as a whole, the market was, they held up very well.

01:40The better lines in cattle, they're probably selling above expectation.

01:44And that's all we've got time for this week.
