Phil Douglas, Nutrien Colac livestock agent talks about the annual Birregurra steer weaner sale.
Transcript
00:00Today, first of the two sales, the steers, I noticed approaching $6 or over $6 from the
00:06sell the lighter cattle offered today. Yeah, certainly, and I don't think there's much
00:11of a differentiation with the heavier and into the lighter cattle. There's certainly
00:15heavier steers and there was a very good run of heavier steers today compared to what the
00:20season was going to do to us. Sold quite well and as usual through the whole sale there was
00:26a very strong, you know, the grass-fed fellas, the ones that stepped up again. There wasn't
00:32a lot of, wouldn't I call it, the feeder competition, they were there, but I didn't see them buy
00:36too many, if any at all. Yeah, I saw Miller One and John were here from South Australia,
00:41but it didn't appear to be any of the regular commission buyers, I could be wrong, but I
00:46didn't see Duncan or Campbell here today. No, that's right, or they weren't, but yeah,
00:51like as you said, those grass blokes with South Australia, Northern Victoria, Gippsland,
00:56South Gippsland, they were there, they bought the cattle they wanted and then off they went,
01:01but, and then we took up, also the local blokes took up the slack with the mid to lighter weight
01:06steers and it was strong all the way. Probably as usual, the blacks were the power and the
01:11strength of the job. Herefords are seen to be still that little bit behind the eight ball,
01:15I can't understand why, but they tell me a couple of the major processors just don't buy
01:19herefords, which is a shame because they were very good quality. Yeah, what was the quality
01:23like, given the fact it's been pretty dry, but you had a bit of a break a couple of months
01:26ago, didn't you, and a bit of rain and grass is growing and it's, they've come along quite
01:30nicely, haven't they? Yeah, well it's certainly, October's when we started, up until then, August,
01:35September, everyone was still very worried and the season was in the balance, but from then
01:40on, October onwards, I mean, you know, well that's when the weight's been piled on, grass seed's
01:45taken, you know, the rest of the job up until now, so we've actually got out, well the
01:49weight's a lot better than I thought they'd be.
