A country in a state of national depression is how the Archbishop of Port of Spain Jason Gordon described Trinidad and Tobago on Wednesday morning.

Speaking at a jubilee service at the St Francis R.C Church in Sangre Grande, the Archbishop called on citizens to stop speaking negatively about the country.

As reporter Cindy Raghubar-Teekersingh tells us, the Archbishop believes if three changes are made by the population, the country will be in a much better position by the end of 2025.

00:00A national depression is how Roman Catholic Archbishop Jason Gordon on New Year's Day
00:06described the current state of the country. And he says it has to do with a routine of
00:11people speaking negatively about TNT.
00:15Listen to all the negativity that comes out from every quarter and you know we are in
00:21a national depression. Yes, they have things wrong, but our negativity don't make it right.
00:32It adds fuel to fire and makes living in this place ten times more difficult than it needs
00:38to be.
00:39Rather than doing what we need to do about the problem, what we're doing is we're talking
00:45about the negativity over and over and over as if it solves the problem, it makes it worse.
00:52The Archbishop says people need to stop peddling negative messages and hopelessness, whether
00:58it's in traditional conversation or memes on social media.
01:02To raise the quality of the conversation to a new level and to bring to the nation a new
01:09way of us interacting in our family, in our communities, in our workplaces, and on the
01:17social media so that we can see the problem.
01:23We might even analyze the problem, but we go to solutions to the problem and we don't
01:32talk badly about people, regardless of whether they have high or low office.
01:40He says we are in a state of emergency, which means the government recognizes we are facing
01:46major challenges. Some people, he says, have taken the liberty to mash up the country,
01:52doing anything they want, without care for anyone.
01:56If we could do these three things, put God first, treat each other with great love and
02:03respect and hold responsibility and liberty both equally in our hands, your life, your
02:14family, this church community, and this beloved Twin Island Republic we call Trinidad and
02:22Tobago will be an amazing place at the end of this year.
