00:00With the Tobago self-government bill failing to secure a supermajority in the
00:04parliament, with 21 government members voting for and 16 opposition members
00:09voting against its passage, opposition leader Kamla Prasad Bisasa is defending
00:15her party's position.
00:16It was a mamaguy bill. They were attempting to say they're giving
00:20self-government, self-determination to the people of Tobago and the trolls are
00:25now out there with the narrative that the UNC blocked the bill. And we blocked it for
00:29good reason, because far from giving self-determination, what it was doing was
00:35reserving the power to the Prime Minister of the country to say, to do, to
00:39make the decisions.
00:40The opposition leader then referenced another piece of
00:43legislation, which she noted was touted to bring significant improvement to the
00:48quality of life of citizens.
00:50Because they had no intention of passing, they knew we were not
00:53supporting it. We knew the people of Tobago were not supporting those bills
00:56and they had made it very clear they could not support them. But it reminds
01:00them this is an election gimmick. You remember just before the election, local
01:05government, what happened? They came with Local Government Reform Act. Up to today,
01:11only one clause was proclaimed. And you know which one that was? To extend the life of
01:19the local government councils and what that meant is to delay the election.
01:24But we took them to court. We have good doctors in the UNC, we have good lawyers in the UNC as well.
01:29And the court struck it down.
01:31Prasad Bisesa is promising to do right by Tobago if the UNC wins the general election.
01:37Among her plans, better health services for Tobago.
01:41The one cath lab in San Fernando, we will do. But I promise you this, should you put us back,
01:47we will also fix back the cath lab in Tobago.
