It's the day before COP 29 closes. The UN Secretary General is fresh from the G20 in
00:07
Brazil where he said COP 29 was very much on their agenda.
00:12
And I heard leader after leader stress the importance of concrete success. Delegations
00:20
and the COP presidency are now working hard to find common ground. But as I said in my
00:29
opening remarks here, the clock is ticking. COP 29 is now down to the wire.
00:39
In Baku, delegations have taken largely neutral positions.
00:44
For me it is clear that science stresses that there will be no way to reach 1.5 degrees
00:54
as a limit for global warming if there is not a phase-out of fossil fuels.
01:01
But for the climate activists, this year's finance COP has quickly gone bankrupt as the
01:07
richer developed countries have not committed funds to the estimated trillions of dollars
01:12
needed for climate action.
01:14
The developed countries, in particular the United States, always like to point the finger,
01:21
especially at some of the larger developing countries, saying, oh, they are refusing to
01:26
take action to reduce emissions. They are the reason this process isn't going anywhere.
01:34
This is an incredibly hypocritical stance.
01:37
The United States has not delivered on climate finance.
01:40
So not only is the United States not providing any money, they're actually working actively
01:44
to undermine the negotiations on the new collective quantified goal.
01:51
For example, trying to water down the language so that there's actually no responsibility,
01:56
there's no obligation for developed countries.
01:58
It's all about mobilizing the private sector, oh, and let's see if we can get China to contribute
02:02
some money.
02:04
So everything in the United States is doing, even now, with the Biden administration knowing
02:09
that the Trump administration is coming into power, they have nothing to lose, and even
02:14
now all they're doing is blocking and obstructing and distracting.
02:19
Emissions of rich developed countries are estimated to be 0.5% higher by 2030 than what
02:26
was committed to in 2020.
02:29
The United States is currently the world's largest producer, exporter and expander of
02:34
oil and gas.
02:35
So not only are we the world's largest producer of both oil and gas, we're also exporting
02:40
the most by far, and we're continuing to expand that extraction, devastating the Permian Basin,
02:46
the Bakken Shale, other regions of the United States subject to this fossil fuel extraction,
02:53
and to ship that overseas to continue to hook other countries on our fossil fuels for decades
02:56
to come.
02:57
It's the day before COP ends, and its unlikely positions will change overnight and without
03:03
financial commitments and much needed climate action, the world is heading to a devastating
03:09
1.5 degree increase or higher in global temperatures at a quicker pace.
03:15
Scientists say more land will become barren, affecting food production.
03:20
Glaciers melt, causing sea levels to rise and eliminating habitable land.
03:26
Rivers will dry and fresh water supply will diminish.
03:30
More people will die due to heat.
03:33
And life on earth faces extinction.
