All eyes are on Baku as world leaders gather at the United Nations Conference of the Parties, COP29, to discuss the future of the planet, with climate finance at the top of the agenda.

Among the voices calling for immediate action is Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell of Grenada, who has made an urgent appeal for the global community to finally put money into the Loss and Damage Fund—a crucial lifeline for small island nations devastated by climate change.

00:00And at this very moment, as I stand here, yet again, my island is being devastated by
00:09flash flooding, landslides and deluge of excessive rainfall, all in the space of a matter of
00:19a couple of hours.
00:20The Grenadian prime minister's comments come in the wake of droughts and devastating storms
00:24like Hurricane Beryl, which tore through the Caribbean islands of Carriacou and Petit Martinique
00:29earlier this year, something Mr. Mijol says is now a reality of small island developing
00:34states.
00:35Or whether it's not using a big word like operationalized loss and damage fund, but
00:40actually put the money in the fund and make it available for those of us who suffer the
00:47loss and damage.
00:49It's a partnership for mutual benefit.
00:53Despite the promises made by wealthier nations, countries like Grenada are still waiting for
00:58the critical support needed to recover and adapt to an increasingly unstable climate.
01:03And the partnership that we are asking for, the partnership to finance climate adaptation,
01:11the partnership to finance climate resilience is a partnership that works in the best interests
01:18of the planet.
01:20As the discussions at COP 29 continue, the world's leaders are being urged to act now.
01:25The question remains, will they answer the call to ensure that the loss and damage fund
01:29is fully capitalized and made accessible to those most in need?
01:33While neither the prime minister nor any ministers of government attended COP 29, Trinidad and
01:38Tobago is represented by Kishan Kumar Singh, the lead negotiator on climate change, the
01:43permanent secretary of the Ministry of Planning and Vishnu Dhanpal, TT High Commission to
01:48the UK.
