00:00The U.S. presidential election.
00:07One local political analyst is shocked at Donald Trump emerging victorious over Kamala
00:12Harris.
00:13Dr. Winford James says the polls held the race being close, but Republican Trump ended
00:18up winning by a wide margin, and he says Trinidad and Tobago should always be concerned about
00:23Trump and his actions.
00:27Whatever advantages we have been saying that we are deriving from the gas deals with Venezuela
00:35are things that are very tenuous.
00:40The beliefs that we have and the comfort that we have are very tenuous because you never
00:47know when, behind the scenes at least, Trump could put pressure on our government to cease
00:55or turn back the arrangements that we are so happy, that is to say the government, that
01:02we have made with Venezuela.
01:04So you have that, and then I think you have to also wonder, since they are going after
01:13undocumented immigrants, you wonder if some of our fellow Trinidadians and Tobogonians
01:23living in the United States, living both legally and illegally there, whether they
01:30will be affected.
01:32Dr. James says given the enthusiasm supporters showed for Kamala Harris, he was shocked at
01:39the outcome of the presidential race.
01:41He adds that it's amazing that Trump, who the courts found to be a criminal, was still
01:46able to campaign and eventually win.
01:50So frankly, I was disappointed that that was the case, but also I believe in democracy.
01:56Not that I am impressed by American democracy.
02:01There are different kinds, as you know.
02:04I was frankly disappointed because I really thought, given all the transgressions and
02:11trespasses of Mr. Trump, the supremacist underbelly of white America came through in
02:22this campaign and came through with alarming effect because there are people like me who
02:31thought the dream was going to be more accessible, who have lost desire, really desire
02:41to go to America and live there.
02:45Chairman of the Tobago arm of the Trinidad and Tobago Chamber of Industry and Commerce,
02:49Curtis Williams, is seeing changes in foreign policies in light of President-elect Donald
02:53Trump and his win at the U.S. elections on Wednesday morning.
02:58I see changes coming in on the horizon.
03:02We're talking about changes in foreign diplomatic policies in terms of let's look at the tariff,
03:08let's look at all those foreign things, even dealing with the dragon gas deal.
03:13That's such an important thing that we all have to keep our ears on the ground because
03:19things could change overnight on that in terms of sanctions and different things that could
03:23happen, and it could affect our arrangement we have with Venezuela.
03:27So it's something that we must keep close to our heart going forward.
03:32Chief Secretary Farley Augustine has congratulated the United States of America for holding free
03:38and fair elections.
03:39The chief secretary told TV6 News, congratulations to the American people who participated in
03:45their democratically held election in overwhelming numbers.
03:49Like the rest of the world, we look forward to seeing a peaceful transition of power,
03:53and we anxiously await the incoming president's policies towards Latin America and the Caribbean
03:59and, in particular, Trinidad and Tobago.
04:03Outside of that, it is not the policy of the THA to be overly concerned or to meddle
04:07in the internal affairs of other countries.
04:12The political leader of the National Transformation Alliance, former police commissioner Gary
04:16Griffith, has extended his sincere congratulations to President-elect Donald Trump on his victory
04:22in the United States presidential election.
04:26In a letter addressed to Mr. Trump, Mr. Griffith said, the election emphasizes the power of
04:31the democratic electoral process, where citizens are empowered to participate and make decisions
04:36with a shared sense of responsibility for shaping their own future.
04:41Mr. Griffith wrote that as Mr. Trump assumes office and begins the rollout of appointments,
04:47he looks forward to welcoming and meeting with Mr. Trump's appointed ambassador to Trinidad
04:51and Tobago to engage in the furtherance of shared security discussions as was undertaken
04:57with the late Ambassador Mondello.
