00:00The fact that our criminals have been able to flourish, it is because light has
00:08been absent. It is because light is absent why mothers are supporting the
00:16criminal activities of their sons. They're enjoying the fruits of criminal
00:22activities. They are not asking questions about why their sons are behaving the way they are.
00:32Chief Secretary Farley Augustine said taking something that does not belong to
00:37you has not been the norm over the years in Tobago. And many of us grew up in
00:43Tobago at a time where you could not even take another child's copybook or
00:48pencil home without your parents perhaps flogging you for coming home
00:54with an item that did not belong to you. So how did we arrive at a place where we
01:02have become so comfortable with criminal activities, so comfortable knowing that
01:07the drug dealer is living downstairs our homes. Darkness is in essence the absence of light.
01:16Mr. Augustine said the high level of crime in Tobago remains a challenge.
01:21And when we look at our own society today and look at the things that are
01:27challenging us, in particular our challenge with high levels of crime, it
01:34may very well be that those things continue to exist because light has been
01:40absent in many ways. The THA Chief Secretary comments came during Diwali
01:47celebrations in Tobago where former Chief Secretary Orville London was
01:52honored by the Tobago Hindu Society for his contribution of land to the society
01:58for the building of their temple at Signal Hill. Elizabeth Williams, TV6 News.
