Tropical rainstorm aiming for the Caribbean

A tropical rainstorm out in the Atlantic Ocean is expected to strengthen before striking Puerto Rico and Hispaniola this coming weekend.

00:00There's a chance for development here among this disorganized cluster of showers and thunderstorms

00:05in the western Caribbean.

00:06There's a smaller, pesky zone of rain and tropical rainstorm that we're highlighting

00:12to the east there.

00:13And in both cases, we expect to be protected from a combination of the cold front and high

00:18pressure over the southeast that will follow that through the weekend.

00:21So ultimately, there may be some development in the western Caribbean into the weekend.

00:25That would be more of a threat for Honduras, Nicaragua, Belize.

00:28And the tropical rainstorm will likely organize into a tropical storm on Friday, passing just

00:35north of Puerto Rico and then moving in through the core of the Greater Antilles.

00:39That's a lot of land interaction.

00:41So we will see some big impacts into Hispaniola with some flooding rain there.

00:45But ultimately, as this moves west, gets suppressed south due to a trough and that high pressure

00:50system over the interior southeast, that'll bury this storm system down into the islands

00:55and we'll likely see it weaken after a lot of land interaction.

00:58But again, Bree, we're looking at big-time flooding here in Hispaniola, 4 to 8 inches

01:02in the mountains with an accurate local storm max of 20 inches possible.

01:05Yeah, mudslides, a very real risk.

01:08So certainly going to be keeping our eye on this one as we head into the weekend.
