Trinidad and Tobago's Minister of Planning and Development Pennelope Beckles-Robinson has been selected to be a ministerial leader for strategic advocacy when CARICOM presents a united front at COP 29 UN conference on climate change next month in , Azerbaijan.

00:00The Regional Secretariat in Georgetown has announced that in preparation for
00:04COP 29, CARICOM has selected Minister Penelope Beckels-Robinson as one of the
00:11ministerial champions for key negotiation areas. The Secretariat said
00:16this is crucial as member states of CARICOM repair the damage from Hurricane
00:20Beryl whose record strength in June resulted in hundreds of millions of
00:25dollars in damages at the start of the annual Atlantic hurricane season. CARICOM
00:30issued a statement saying that this pivotal event will see CARICOM member
00:35states advocating for urgent climate action and robust financial commitments
00:40to address the unique vulnerabilities of small island developing states. It says
00:45it is a landmark year for financing as CARICOM seeks to secure a climate
00:50finance goal that guarantees access for small island developing states to grant
00:56based or concessional finance especially for adaptation and loss and damage
01:01respectively through minimum allocation floors and highest levels of
01:07concessionality for the small island developing states. The community is
01:11expected to have a strong presence at COP 29 including heads of government,
01:17ministers, negotiators, youth delegates and experts from the CARICOM Secretariat
01:22and other regional institutions.
