Man dies after allegedly stabbed by stepson

A man has died at a home in Melbourne’s north-west after allegedly being stabbed by his stepson this morning.

00:00Just before 7 o'clock this morning, Victoria police were called to a home here in Hillside,

00:07in Melbourne's western suburbs.

00:08When they arrived, officers discovered an unresponsive 61-year-old man who had been

00:12stabbed in his front lawn.

00:14They attempted to perform CPR, but he died at the scene.

00:18Police say a short time later, the alleged offender confronted officers with an edged

00:21weapon.

00:23Officers fired several shots before he was apprehended.

00:26Police have identified the victim's stepson as the alleged perpetrator.

00:29The 32-year-old man who had been known to police and who police say had a history of

00:34mental health concerns.

00:35He was taken to hospital in a stable but critical condition, with injuries to his lower body.

00:40The victim has been identified as Tony DeFalco.

00:43At the scene this morning, his family remembered him as the life of the party.

00:47Police say they're treating this as a family violence incident, and as a matter of protocol,

00:52the officers' use of their firearms will be investigated and overseen by the Professional

00:56Standards Command.
