00:01This is the jersey that will be worn by rugby league greats when PNG joins the NRL in 2028.
00:08The official colours and logo were launched in Port Moresby today after the team secured the largest sponsorship deal in
00:15NRL history.
00:16It's an exciting step in the expansion journey for the PNG Chiefs which have already signed several marquee players including
00:23Jerome Luai and Alex Johnston.
00:25But the team's claim to the name the Chiefs remains in question with an IP challenge by a New Zealand
00:31Super Rugby franchise still pending.
00:33Fans are passionate. They know what they're going for. You know that you're either going for a rugby league and
00:39Port Moresby based PNG Chiefs or you're a rugby union fan in Waikato in New Zealand. Very different codes.
00:45But that hasn't deterred the start up PNG team from unveiling their jersey at a ceremony full of culture today.
00:51And so for the PNG Chiefs it was really something that we had to get the culture right. We had
00:56to reflect the culture in the jersey.
00:58The design is inspired by hundreds of tribes across the country as well as its diverse natural landscape.
01:04And already people are queuing up to buy the jersey. And come 2028 when the Chiefs join the NRL it's
01:10expected millions of fans across the country will wear these colours.
01:13And as well as the video they've learned from this.
01:14Let's see.
01:16We'll be back.
