00:00I am Josh Feidler from the Juliana Theory and we are here in the Subterranean in Chicago
00:17on our 25 year Understand This is a Dream tour.
00:23So yeah, I'm here to talk about my guitars and I'll kind of talk about everybody's guitar
00:28but my two, I'll kind of start with the acoustic so we, Brett uses this mostly for August and
00:37Bethany but we use it a lot for some pre-show stuff as well so it's like a beautiful Gibson
00:46hummingbird that we got from the fine folks at Gibson.
00:51I love this thing.
00:52You know, just pretty standard, we use Ernie Ball decoded lights, I think they're 12-52's
00:59or something.
01:00Yeah, so it's pretty standard.
01:03So my guitars, I use all Reverends on the road so I play two during the set.
01:11So this is a Reverend Kingbolt.
01:14It's got the two, what are they called, hyper vintage pickups so they're like just humbuckers
01:24and I use the bass contour knob a lot.
01:27I usually have it kind of about a quarter of the way up, that gives me not as much beef
01:32so I can kind of cut through a bit more with the mids and everything but I've used this
01:36guitar for quite a few years, it's one of my favorite guitars.
01:40I love this thing.
01:41Tuning for all of our guitars are D standard so just a whole step down, I use the Ernie
01:48Ball M-Steels, it's like the high output strings and I use 11-48's for everything so I kind
01:56of found like 11-48's gives me that kind of spot.
02:00I used to use 12-52's all the time and then 10-46 is a little light for when we tune down
02:06so I kind of found like 11-49 gives me that sweet spot between not too heavy, not too
02:11light, I can still bend everything pretty far.
02:15So I've been using, I use this a lot on like stuff after Understand, I use this mostly
02:23for like Emotion Is Dead and on because I almost always play Les Pauls and stuff with
02:27humbuckers.
02:28The first record, Understand, I had a Ibanez Talon on them I used a lot and it had P90's
02:33so I recently got this Reverend Gristle 90 which is awesome because it's got this color
02:42that I think was like a semi-mistake, it was supposed to be blue and it came out almost
02:45like Sherwood Green so it's like the Greg Caulk Gristle 90 signature.
02:52It's got like the Fishman P90's so it's kind of weird, I charge them instead of like normal
02:59thing but it doesn't have any hum or anything which is awesome.
03:03And then the Bigsby, I love any guitar with a Bigsby, I know some people hate them, some
03:07people love them, I love them, it's like just the perfect amount of bend on them and stuff
03:12so yeah.
03:13I switch between them all the time like for something that's straight, you know like a
03:19song for like a DJ or this is not a love song, I'm all just bridge pick up but anytime I
03:26have cleans I'm mostly on the neck or in the middle and then it's got like a cool different
03:31voicing button as well, it kind of gives a couple of different voices, one's a little
03:36more mid-ranging and one's a little more bassier so I'll switch that a little bit between the
03:42songs as well so.
03:44So this is my pedal board, I use the Pedaltrain Novo 32 and a few years ago we decided to
03:54go Helix route instead of Karin amps, makes it nice for places like this when you have
03:59to go up steps and not to plug the amps so we just have, you know, my pedal board.
04:05Now for this run I actually just got the Pedaltrain so I can put a few more pedals on it and so
04:10I just have, I've got the Helix so I use this for my amps and a lot of effects but for instance
04:18I have like most of my stuff is, I almost have a pedal board for each song except for
04:24this record I, you know, I kind of do two amps that I run simultaneously, I use it for
04:32an AC30 model and then like a JMP model so it kind of simulates a little bit like what
04:38I did back in the day and then I kind of have, you know, for my overdrive I've got the Klon
04:45setting and then Dyna drive for my distortions and then I use like the compressor a good
04:54bit which is like the, like the Keeley like model anyway, vintage delay, I've got the
05:0163 like spring reverb on most of the time and then I also got, I got the H9 to kind
05:08of give me some like extra stuff so I have like the AUX switch and I kind of go through
05:14like some different things that I wanted to be able to do, some extra noise that the Helix,
05:21you know, has some stuff but the Eventide has a lot more like the delays and reverbs
05:26that are kind of crazy so I kind of have different presets for some of the songs that I do so
05:31you can see like August and Bethany, Music Box Superhero has a phaser, like a different
05:37octave pedal so I kind of go through with these as I go, you know, for different songs
05:44and then I use like the drop pedal for a few songs we drop it down to B standard or, yeah,
05:51B standard for just a few things that, you know, Brett can sing but with the amount of
05:59shows we're doing and the length of the set, you know, we're not 18 year olds, it's kind
06:04of hard to hit some of those notes now so we do drop a few songs for like that and then
06:08I have like the Chase Bliss Mute that I use it at home a lot for, you know, some crazy
06:14delays and reverbs and stuff but live I mostly use it as the looper and to kind of create
06:21like pad loops like in between songs at the end of songs and I'll kind of just like, you
06:28know, mess around with the knob that makes all these crazy sounds and, yeah, that's what
06:33I'm using.
06:34One of the things I've been using is like my, I use a Shure GLX wireless.
06:41It's amazing, it's never given me any issues.
06:44Not sponsored by Shure but it is awesome and then a couple of things I have on my mic stand
06:49like I do, I actually do the tune, in-tune picks so I have some like just my stuff on
07:00my personalized.
07:01I use the one, one millimeter, yeah, it's like, it's almost like the Tortex material
07:07so that's what I've been using for years and years and years and then just a copper, copper
07:15guitar slide and then I use a Hill mic, everybody else is using Shure's.
07:23I got this mic a few years ago, I started using it live and it's just been perfect,
07:28I've never had any issues with it.
07:30I don't know a whole lot about mics, guitars and pedals are more my thing but I do love
07:34this thing so, yeah.
07:37So yeah, anything else that you guys want to find out about, you can find us on all
