00:00I'm like this half the set, so this thing goes in my mouth all the time.
00:04That's actually not that bad. This used to be worse.
00:07I actually built this cab myself. Just some birch plywood here.
00:30What's up, Gear Masters? I'm Jason. I'm in a band called Honey. That's H-U-N-N-Y.
00:42We've got a new record out. It's called Spirit. Out today, we're celebrating here in Chicago.
00:48We're on tour with Cartel for their 20th anniversary of Chroma.
00:51My TV is hiding their kick drum, but it's an XX back there.
00:55Yeah, we're here at the House of Blues in Chicago.
00:57Great place and ready to look at some gear.
01:00So this is my, I guess it's called a Daisy, really.
01:06This is a one-off custom from Nelson Guitar Works.
01:10My boy Bruce Nelson, out in the valley back at home, he builds all of my guitars.
01:17So this one is like a Bronco body.
01:21It's got like a Strat-style ebony neck on there.
01:24I've got the vintage tuners. This one is different from the rest
01:28because some kid was stage diving at one of our shows a few years ago
01:31and his shirt got caught on it and ripped my last one off.
01:34Bruce didn't have any white ones.
01:35So it matches my, it matches my tooth, actually.
01:38So it's kind of nice.
01:39I've got a single Lawler P90 in here, mastery, bridge, and vibrato set up.
01:46And this thing, like, I can...
01:49I beat, I beat the hell out of these things.
01:55So yeah, Bruce Nelson, Nelson Guitar Works makes awesome stuff.
01:59Serial number is my birthday right there.
02:01And, um, yeah, this one I've had since 2015.
02:08So it's, it's seen some, it's seen some shit.
02:12Uh, strings we are running.
02:14A brand new pair of, uh, regular Slinkies.
02:18Ernie Ball.
02:2010, 46.
02:23Um, yeah, I do Ernie Ball strings, Ernie Ball cables, Ernie Ball power.
02:28Um, we love Ernie Ball.
02:30Thank you, Ernie Ball.
02:30I mean, I guess it is kind of a bit of a weird setup.
02:33I like, I do this to pretty much all of my guitars, where I just, I usually love just
02:39a bridge pickup.
02:40Uh, Nelson, Bruce convinced me on my other guitar, on the SG, to put a neck pickup in.
02:46I use it sometimes, I use it in the studio, but pretty much never live.
02:49Um, so I always just do one bridge pickup, and I just, like, ride the volume.
02:54Not too much for, like, tone or anything like that.
02:58I, I have, like, a three kind of gain stage thing.
03:02We'll talk about that, I guess.
03:03Um, but I'm pretty much just riding this thing, like, on and off.
03:07I don't do too much, like, Stevie Ray Vaughan type of, I'm not, I don't have my pinky on
03:12the thing or anything like that while I'm playing.
03:15Um, but yeah, it's just kind of maybe like a force of habit, where I'm like, boom, verse
03:19comes in, I'm out.
03:20Um, but yeah, I ride the volume just like that, but not for, like, any tone, really.
03:26And, uh, yeah, that's this one.
03:27All right, this one's, so this one's another Nelson Guitar Works.
03:33Bruce, it took me a few years to convince him he usually does only, like, Fender style
03:39stuff.
03:40Um, he builds, like, amazing strats.
03:42Um, we have lots of friends who've gotten lots of strats.
03:44They're, they're perfect.
03:46He builds nice tellies and stuff, too.
03:47Um, but I like the weird shit, so it took me a really long time to get him to make
03:52me an SG.
03:54Um, so this one also has the slanted Lawler P90.
03:59This one is like a mini humbucker.
04:02This one's in Firebirds a lot, usually.
04:05Uh, this one sounds great.
04:06I never, I never use the neck pickup live, but.
04:10Oh, my tuner's on.
04:11Whoa.
04:16Mike.
04:18Come on.
04:20They sound really nice together.
04:23But it's live, I'm usually, I'm usually, I'm always on the bridge.
04:27Um, yeah, we've got the vibrato.
04:31This one's not mastery, I don't think.
04:32This was a new, God, I wish I could remember the name of this guy.
04:36It's some dude who makes, like, auto, like, he makes, like, custom fabricated pieces for,
04:42like, uh, like, cars.
04:46Like, supercars or something like that.
04:48And Bruce found him, but this thing is, this thing's bitching, too.
04:52Uh, mastery bridge, though.
04:54And then, this one also, of course, gets Ernie balls.
04:58I run the same gauge, the regular slinky on these ones.
05:01Um, I do the same thing where I'm always riding the volume on here.
05:04I kind of switch off between them every night, but they're both, we just, everything's in standard.
05:08Um, but what I do, do a lot, actually, is capos.
05:14There's capos on, like, half the freaking set.
05:17Um, now that we're just one, now that we're just one guitar, I have to fill out a lot more space, um, live.
05:24Um, so there's capos, so that I, I had to create new guitar parts for a lot of our songs to kind of just be open and I can fill up more space.
05:34Um, there's a handful of guitar parts that turned into keyboard parts, but, um, yeah, so I just, everything's in standard and I just, I love capos.
05:43Um, that's, that's pretty much, that's pretty much it.
05:46Um, so it's actually, I've, I've, like, squished this down.
05:50I used to be, like, a ten pedals type of guy.
05:55Um, and I have gotten it down to just four.
05:59I mean, some of these are a few in one.
06:02I used to have three different, um, actually all of them are, are doing multiple things now.
06:07And that's why I, I have such a minimal setup here, um, Polly Tune, my tuner, of course, uh, that goes into the Jekyll and Hyde.
06:20This is, like, the version one.
06:22Um, I got this one years ago when I found out that this, this is, like, all that the strokes would use back in the day.
06:29So, clean.
06:34And then, gain stage one.
06:37Um, and then for, like, solos or, like, really heavy parts.
06:44Um, that one's with, yeah, drive is all the way down on, like, this first one, which is basically a tube screamer.
06:51And then, this one, I think, this side, I think, is more of, like, a, like, a blues breaker, I think, is what this is.
06:58But, um, I have the bass boost off.
07:01That's always on sharp.
07:03My volumes are a little down because this fucker gets loud.
07:05And my amp is loud enough as it is.
07:08Um, so, yeah, that's my gain staging.
07:12And then that goes into the Flashback 2 or the Flashback X4 2.
07:18I don't even know what this one's really called.
07:20Um, I used to have the old version of this.
07:22But this one, when this one came out and it had, like, the mash stuff, I used these everywhere.
07:28This is all, I throw this everywhere in the set.
07:30It's freaking awesome for, like, big build-ups and, like, transitions and stuff.
07:39Like, you, the more pressure you put on it, the, like, this one's, like, a tape delay.
07:43So, it, like, speeds up the, like, the tape and the oscillation.
07:47And then, like, you pull pressure off and it slows it down and, like, rips up.
07:50It's great.
07:51Um, so, that's my, but usually this one's my.
07:56Just kind of, like, mid-delay.
07:59This one's my, like, long tape delay.
08:02And then this one I always, is my tap tempo.
08:05Um, this one, I use this third one for, like, a slapback.
08:11Just basically to play guitar parts that I am not good enough to play.
08:15Stuff that I've written that, like, when I try to play it and sing it at the same time.
08:19So, that's my, this one's my cheat, my cheat code right there.
08:24Um, and then everything goes into the Pretty Bird Lady, which is a chorus vibrato that has,
08:31because I used to run three different chorus pedals on here.
08:35I used to have a chorus ensemble and then a Vienna Bones, which was two chorus pedals, basically.
08:43And then, um, just a, a boss, um, the, like, whatever the vibrato is called, the V2 or whatever that is.
08:51Um, so this one's got presets on it, which is fucking great.
08:54So, usually I'm on two, which is kind of, like, my, my really, like, juicy vibrato one.
09:03But I've got slower stuff, like, the three ends up kind of being, like, more of, like, a phaser flanger type of deal.
09:10So that's nice.
09:10Four I actually never even use.
09:12Uh, one's good.
09:15And just a really slow, like, sweeping guy.
09:18Um, just because, yeah, there's, there's never not a time in the set or almost in any of our songs, really,
09:24that is not, like, drenched in chorus or vibrato.
09:28So, that's always on.
09:30Just depends on the setting.
09:32And then, um, yeah, Ernie Ball Volt Power.
09:36Jeff Gordon holds my, uh, my ear, my backup earplugs.
09:43My other ones are, my erasers are on the, on my amp.
09:47And Snoopy holds all of the picks.
09:51These are, like, um, Ernie Ball mediums or whatever.
09:55They're .6.
09:56That's my vibe.
09:58So, Spirit, out 9-26-25.
10:01HoneyTheBand.
10:01HoneyTheBand.co, not .com.
10:04Very important.
10:05Uh, and, yeah, that's, that's it.
10:07Temple Audio Board.
10:09Um, we, which, these are freaking great.
10:12Because I've got, I've got these, this bad boy built in here.
10:18So, I'm not plugging stuff in and out of my pedals every night and ruining my jacks.
10:23These are built, like, really, really well.
10:26Um, and then, that's actually not that bad.
10:30This used to be, this, this used to be worse.
10:32But, yeah, the Temple Audios are great because they've got the plates that you stick on here.
10:36It makes, like, changing pedals or, like, figuring out problems in your chain, like, really easy.
10:42You don't have to deal with all the Velcro and all that nonsense.
10:45And, um, you get the added bonus of everything looking really clean.
10:48You get to run all your power through the little holes and stuff.
10:52It's great.
10:52Temple Audio.
10:53Um, okay, so, despite the look of this, this is actually the Electro Harmonics version of this amp, the MiG-50.
11:01Uh, I used to have an old MiG-50 back in the day.
11:04And, I ended up selling that for, like, $300 at some point.
11:09I don't know why.
11:10Something, something was wrong with me.
11:11But, these are, they're great.
11:13They're just, like, old, like, JMPs, essentially, but just a Russian version.
11:17Um, and they just, they rule.
11:21They get fucking loud.
11:23It gets so loud.
11:25So, my pedal board goes into the JHS Little Black amp box,
11:31which is just the volume attenuator so that I can run channel 2 at, like, you know, whatever this is, 9 o'clock.
11:40Without this volume attenuator cutting my, my, like, input, like, in half,
11:46essentially, this is, like, it rattles your fucking brain when, when this amp is actually past 1.
11:55So, that's great.
11:56I run everything pretty much flat except bass.
12:00I take all that out.
12:01It's, like, barely in there, just a, just a smidge.
12:04Um, I changed the, I changed the grill cloth thing on this bad boy.
12:09Threw a SoftTech badge on there.
12:12Whatever.
12:12Sue me.
12:13Uh, changed the knobs for fun.
12:15Uh, and this guy used to be red.
12:17I changed that to green.
12:19I can't leave anything alone.
12:20I can't, like, I can't just leave.
12:22Um, so, I got to change everything in, in, in this whole entire realm.
12:28Uh, yeah.
12:29Earplugs up here.
12:30I just have, I forget to put these even in half the time, especially on a nice big stage like this.
12:35Um, when I'm not too close to the cymbals and I'm, whatever.
12:39Uh, cab.
12:41I actually built this cab myself.
12:45Um, just some birch plywood here.
12:48And, um, inside it's a two, it's not a 212, it's a two 1210.
12:55So, my top speaker right here is a Celestian G10 greenback.
13:02And then on the bottom, I've got a Celestian Eddie Van Halen G12.
13:07And, um, yeah, these bad boys sound amazing together when I can, like, headline shows when I have, I mic both of these and, like, spread them in the house and it sounds fucking killer.
13:21Um, but, either way, both speakers sound great.
13:24Like, they sound awesome together.
13:25Just, um, yeah.
13:28This thing is, it's, it's lasting so far.
13:30This has been on two tours and it hasn't completely fallen apart.
13:35It hasn't fallen apart at all, actually.
13:36So, a testament to my craftsmanship, perhaps.
13:40Um, and, yeah, that's just, there's just one thing in the back.
13:45Eight ohms, because these are both, uh, 16, I think so.
13:49Mic is pretty easy.
13:51I always have a straight stand.
13:53The booms, I don't know why, I, I knock them over, uh, when I play.
13:57I have, you'd think that this would be, you know, easier to do that with, but for some reason it's not.
14:05Um, mic is just a, just a 57 with, like, this weird, the weird foam cover on it.
14:11Um, some, some sound guy the other day was like, oh, I haven't seen that since Kiss.
14:18Kiss used to do that.
14:19So, I guess Kiss used to do these ones.
14:21I just, I get, like, I'm like this half the set.
14:24So, I, this thing goes in my mouth all the time.
14:27So, the, with the little 57, I'd choke on it or something.
14:30I don't know.
14:30But, yeah, it's just a trusty 57.
14:33And that's all for, for vocals.
14:36And, uh, yeah, that's it.
14:37Jason from Honey, H-U-N-N-Y, honeytheband.co.
14:41Follow us, uh, honeytheband on Instagram and everything else.
14:44Our new record is out right now.
14:46By the time that you're seeing this, uh, it's called Spirit with an exclamation point.
14:50And, uh, yeah, listen to it.
14:52I hope you like it.
14:52Thanks for having me.
14:53I hope you like it.
