00:00I have my pickups dangerously close to my strings to get all those pinch harmonics in there.
00:05I do this on all my touring guitars. I always glue a pick holder on the back of my headstock.
00:10We are a modern metalcore band, so we need our laptop.
00:39Hey, what's going on, guys? I'm Tristan with Not Enough Space, and I'm currently on the Dark Divine Headliner Tour
00:44as direct support with a band called Step 4 Tomorrow.
00:47It's all thriller bands, so it's really cool to be with the family right now.
00:51And I'm here today. We're going to break down what we do with our equipment for our live shows.
00:57So, first and foremost, we are a modern metalcore band, so we need our laptop.
01:03This is what does all of our backing tracks, and I do only have one of me, so we need
01:08two guitars when we play.
01:09So all the rhythm, whenever I'm doing a cool lead, it'll be all in here.
01:13All of the cool synth tracks, 808s, so the venue shakes.
01:17And then our click track with a couple of MIDI tracks that I will get into here in a second.
01:23But it's all color-coordinated. Here's the whole set list.
01:28Shout out Kaelin from Attila for helping me learn how to do all of this. Now I'm a pro, I
01:33think.
01:33Yeah, the program that we use is called Reaper.
01:36I know a lot of people use Ableton, but I find Reaper's UI to be a little bit more, what's
01:41the word, user-friendly.
01:42This is my quad cortex. We actually, so me and Jacob, the bassist, we share one quad.
01:49So this top channel here is gonna be guitar, and then this bottom channel here is bass.
01:55Not a whole lot going on, so all these buttons here actually do different automations to change our tuning live.
02:01A lot of our songs, I'll be playing a verse riff, and then because my producer hates me,
02:08halfway through it'll drop a half step, like the tuning that I'm playing.
02:11And this is all set up for each song.
02:15And then I also automate my gate a lot, because we do the super tight metalcore chugs,
02:21and then it'll open it up, like it'll open up the gate whenever we do a chord progression,
02:25or I need some like string noise or something.
02:28But, so talking about FX chain on the quad, so I actually uploaded Gojira, the Archetype plugin,
02:35and this is all literally pretty much mirrored from the tone that we use on our record.
02:40We do use a couple more things on the record, obviously, but this is as close as we can get
02:45it,
02:45so that way it does sound, you know, perfect live.
02:48And then for the bass tone, we use Parallax, which they just updated for the quad,
02:54so it was really cool to be able to upload Parallax and be able to get some really sick low
02:59tone.
02:59I mean, you can even see, it's just no mid, all high, all low. It's awesome.
03:03And it sounds really, really fat with a couple of model amp heads and, you know, some gain.
03:08I like to use a Ranger Boost on my guitar to get a really bright sound, so it cuts through
03:12everything.
03:14Because it's metalcore, baby.
03:18And, oh, and then for fun days, I actually have this channel here that I can turn on,
03:23and this is a second cab, which will help for, so for PAs that are a little bit,
03:29they're not, like, the best for the genre of music that we're playing.
03:33This will give my guitar just a little bit of extra beef to, just to help cut through,
03:38so that way we sound, you know, as full as possible.
03:40Because metalcore, in my opinion, is driven a lot by the guitar and the drums.
03:45And if you don't hear a guitar, then, like, there's not a whole lot of context in what you're listening
03:50to live.
03:50Okay.
03:51Looking down at what we call Rachel, this is our pretty rack of all of our things that we use
03:57to, in order to get sound out there.
04:01It's a mess back there.
04:02We're not going to look back there.
04:03But, so, these are our IEM consoles.
04:07They're pretty straightforward.
04:07These are the Sennheiser G4s.
04:09They're muted right now, obviously, because we're not playing a show.
04:14But, super rudimentary.
04:16Down here is our, just our RF here.
04:19So we have an antenna there.
04:20So this is our in-ear antenna.
04:22And then we have an antenna here, which is for our wireless instruments, which are down here.
04:26This is our Focusrite.
04:29We just use a Focusrite A-channel.
04:30We are about to upgrade to an Apollo.
04:32Just because Apollo, I can do UAD console.
04:34There's a lot more range of a bunch of cool effects and stuff.
04:37But, for right now, this is what we're using to route out all of our tracks from the computer out
04:43to the front of house into a stage box.
04:45Down here, these are our wireless instrument transmitters.
04:48So, up here, you see Liv and Lizzie.
04:50So that's the microphones.
04:51And then Tristan and Jacob, which is me and the bassists, so we're able to play.
04:55Down here, we have the Tascam, the Tascam on Taurus rack mounts that are, it's a vocal processor.
05:02So, for cool little sections, we want like a blown out screen thing.
05:06Or we want like a super, super strict tuning to the vocals for pitch correction.
05:12All of this does all of that.
05:14And this is all automated through the computer.
05:16It was a pain in the ass to do.
05:18But, I did it.
05:20And then down here is our X32.
05:21We actually bought this off of the home team.
05:23Thank you guys.
05:24This has been a lifesaver because this is able to, we're able to mix our ears.
05:29And this is literally all I use it for.
05:31It's just for an ear mix.
05:32So that way it sounds as perfect as possible because we're using one, we're using single
05:36driver headphones for our lives, you know, for our live shows.
05:39So, having the ability to be able to EQ my guitar to fit my headphones better or get the girls
05:46to have some sort of reverb bus so it sounds like a little bit more processed in their headphones
05:50so they feel like they're in the studio.
05:51It's all really, really important.
05:53X32 and then our seismic 16 channel split.
05:57This, so X32 comes out the back and I wrap this out in front.
06:01This goes through our seismic split here and then out the back again to get all these tails.
06:06But we're basically doing three different boom, boom, boom, boom into the front of house.
06:11And that sets all of our in-ears and instruments and all that stuff up.
06:14But we put a lot of work into this and we still have a lot more work to go to
06:17get it picture-perfect,
06:20I think is a good way to put that.
06:22Alright, so moving over to my guitar.
06:24This is my Anki case that I just got from Anki, which has been a huge help on this tour.
06:29This has been the first tour that I was able to go on.
06:31We have the longboard wheels, dude. It's so smooth.
06:35Kind of remind me of Cloud Richtas if you're a skater, you know what I'm talking about.
06:39And this is my pride and joy right now. This is Cirilla.
06:43I have a really cool guitar here.
06:47I think I bought this at Sweetwater, but it was a gift from my mom because I had just made
06:54it big and she wanted to hook me up.
06:56And she let me pick out this one named Cirilla after the princess, you know, from The Witcher, the Lion
07:02Cub Accenture.
07:04Another cool thing, I want to shout on my boy, Tactical Black Vault.
07:07He made me this super sick custom-made, not enough space tuning knob.
07:10Jacob also has one in his bass.
07:13So that's super, super cool.
07:15Another fun thing, and I do this on all my touring guitars, I always glue a pick holder on the
07:19back of my headstock.
07:21So that way, you know, I don't sing live, so it's super quick just to pull it out.
07:28So if I drop a pick, which happens constantly because it's sweaty, you know, just quick, and there it is.
07:33Also, I want to show my picks off. They're super cool.
07:35I got a Pontiard on my pick with my signature on the back.
07:41Jacob has a Wailord on his, so if you ever come out, make sure you try to catch one of
07:45these when we throw them in the crowd,
07:46because I freaking love these, and I don't think we're going to do these again, but they're absolutely awesome.
07:51Yeah, so Cirilla here, she's a Schecter C1 Platinum from the Platinum Series.
07:55I have this bad boy here to eliminate all string noise, because a lot of our chugs are very, very
08:02tight,
08:03like in songs like Devil Left Me I Dread, Don't Be Scared, where it's got to be super, super tight
08:09at all times,
08:10so having this just kind of helps eliminate some of the stringing issues.
08:13And whenever I'm, you know, my soloing or I'm doing a lead, like in Primitive or Solves the Silence,
08:17it makes it a little less noticeable whenever I'm, like, rubbing the strings up here.
08:22String gauges are actually custom ordered from Ernie Ball.
08:26We do have a sponsorship with Ernie Ball.
08:27They've been a huge help to make me feel as comfortable as possible.
08:31But the way I do it, so I play in Drop B live.
08:34A lot of our songs are in Drop B, so this is just, like, the most neutral place to be
08:38in.
08:39With a, with a, so, going through string gauges, so I start 62, 48, 38, and then down here is
08:4718, 14, and 12.
08:48The reason I do it like that is because I do a lot of vibrato and bends and stuff, but
08:53I also play a lot of really heavy chug parts.
08:58So having the heavy on the top and then being able to, yeah, being able to play it up here
09:03and have, like, gifs so I can constantly do that vibrato.
09:08Um, it's just a lot more comfortable.
09:10I, I tried, uh, they, they, uh, I used to have a 22 wound string up for my G string
09:15here, and it was the most uncomfortable thing I've ever played.
09:19Having your third, it felt like I was playing an acoustic guitar and it was awful.
09:22But, um, but yeah, I actually, uh, believe it or not, play the same string gauges as Chris Link from
09:27Attila.
09:28I found out a couple weeks ago, but, um, talking about my knobs, so I don't do anything super, super
09:34big because I have an IR modeler, um, on my, uh, on my quad cortex.
09:39So I just turn my knob all the way up and then the quad kind of does all the carry,
09:43or all the heavy lifting, so I'm never having to, like, constantly, like, be turning it up and down.
09:48Sometimes, if I feel like a venue is giving me a lot of feedback, which tends to happen if there's,
09:52like, a weird power thing, I will turn down my knob a little bit and almost use it like a,
09:57like a, like a gate on the actual guitar just to keep it, because I have my pickups dangerously close
10:03to my strings to get all those pitch harmonics in there.
10:07Um, but, uh, most of the time it's usually just all the way up, especially with the rooms that we've
10:11been playing with now.
10:11We're not, you know, playing dive bars very much anymore. We're usually in actual sick venues, so, um, haven't had
10:18a lot of trouble there.
10:18And then, always play that down. I don't think there's any point in any song where I'll flip this up
10:24and use this pickup for, like, the bassier tone, just because I'm, I am a huge, uh, fan of those
10:30super bright guitar tones.
10:32I mean, I'm playing a Schecter, obviously, I'm a big fan of Avena Sevenfold, so, um, but that's really much,
10:37oh, last thing.
10:38And then I also have locking tuners back here, uh, to make, uh, changing strings just a little bit easier
10:44and quicker, uh, for days where, because I, I'm constantly changing my strings.
10:47I change my strings about every two shows. So, uh, having locking tuners, uh, thank you, Shelby, for buying these
10:52for me for Christmas.
10:53It's been super, super awesome and very easy to just restring, because all you gotta do is wrap around once,
10:59pull up, and clip it, and you're done.
11:01Um, and it looks really neat. Uh, I like the black. So, my guitar is just stock. I haven't done
11:06a whole lot of the changing with EMGs,
11:07and I thought about it. Uh, this is just stock EMG pickups that come with Schecter guitars,
11:13and I thought about it, but the quad is so magical. The quad cortex, you're able to get your guitar
11:18to sound literally like anything.
11:19If you're playing a, uh, I mean, we, we've plugged up a, like a Stratocaster, and that, we can get
11:25that thing to sound super mean with Gojira,
11:27and you have the, uh, the, the Plini plugin, and, um, uh, and you can also just upload, like, all
11:34of your IRs from your, from your DAW,
11:36and just, just, just copy tones, and it'll do all of the work. Maybe a little bit of EQing, but,
11:41um, changing this just always felt unnecessary to me.
11:43Just an unnecessary purchase, because what works already sounds really, really good.
11:47Um, but yeah, Cirilla, and then, this is my backup. This is old, old Sally here. I actually carved Sally
11:55on the back of my guitar.
11:57Named her after, um, the, uh, Nightmare Before Christmas movie, because I felt like the color just reminded me.
12:03This is just an Omen 6. Uh, a little low-end Schecter guitar, um, but this thing fucking rips.
12:09Um, and sometimes I'll bust it out whenever I don't feel like playing Cirilla, but this is also here, so
12:15if I pop a string, or whatever, I can quickly just boom boom,
12:18especially because we have the wireless, um, G4, so it's all contained, and it's very quick to just, just switch
12:25over.
12:25Um, and I also still have that pickguard thing. Like I said, I'm telling you, if you don't do this,
12:30and you play a lot of shows,
12:31just super boom that bad, that bad boy right there. Quick access at all times. It holds up to like
12:36five picks, so it's like, it's, it's, it's game-changing, I promise.
12:41Once again, Tristan from Not Enough Space, you can totally listen to us on pretty much everything.
12:46Spotify is a huge one. We actually just hit 2 mil on Devil Left Behind Red, so keep that coming.
12:50And make sure you try to catch us at Rockville and Sonic Temple later this year with more announcements for
12:55the latter half of the year coming soon.
12:57Again, thank you guys so much for watching and letting me geek out about all this.
13:00It's very nice to be asked questions about a lot of the job that I do for the band, so,
13:04peace out.
13:35We'll see you next time.
