00:00Planning and Development Minister and former Principal of UWE St. Augustine, Dr. Botiwari admits that there is a problem in education at the secondary level, and the problem is not unique to Trinidad and Tobago, but is region-wide.
00:16He laments that the secondary school system is failing the youth.
00:20We have a problem, first of all, of an education system focused solely on examinations, both in the primary level for SEA and at the secondary level for CSEC.
00:40Many times what it means with this kind of failure rate is that the foundations have not been laid, either in the primary school or in secondary school or both.
00:53Can you imagine students not being able to pass five subjects with English and Maths? So it means something terribly wrong.
01:02He concedes that not everyone is academically inclined. However, he notes there are programs available that can help students who are struggling.
01:11You can do technical vocational, which is a good opportunity. Now, the way the world is going, technical vocational will create more opportunities for the individual than academics.
