Round 11 of the 2008 F1 season at the Hungaroring.
Transcript
00:00:00It seems only yesterday the first formula one race behind the former iron curtain took
00:00:05place on a then new track called the hungaro ring.
00:00:09Here we are 23 years later welcoming you to the acura pre-race show for the hungarian
00:00:14round of the formula one world championship, the 2008 hungarian grand prix.
00:00:19Hello again, everyone.
00:00:20I'm bob varsha with steve matchett, david hobbs and peter windsor.
00:00:24Let's get right to the headlines of the weekend with our morning warm-up.
00:00:27David, get us started.
00:00:29Well, mclaren are looking very dominant here covering the front row there.
00:00:33Lewis hamilton on the pole coming off two wins in britain and germany.
00:00:36They did very very well in the tests.
00:00:38They've been a bit up and down this year as everybody does, but they seem to really got
00:00:42us a true note here.
00:00:44On board cameras both drivers look incredibly good and steady.
00:00:47The car looks great and they could be in an absolutely dominant weekend, but racing being
00:00:51racing who knows.
00:00:52Ferrari on the other side seem to be having a bit of a downturn.
00:00:56How about ferrari, steve?
00:00:57Yes, absolutely right.
00:00:59Dominant pace, but ferrari and kimi raikkonen despite wins in malaysia and spain for raikkonen
00:01:05second places in bahrain and france.
00:01:08There's no question that recently kimi raikkonen and ferrari are struggling.
00:01:12Much of that is down to mclaren's dramatic development of ferrari just unable to keep
00:01:16up with the development, but also raikkonen's mental state just seems to have drifted off
00:01:21a little bit.
00:01:22He comes into this race seven points behind the championship leader, but also behind his
00:01:27teammate.
00:01:28Well, for me the great story of the weekend is timo glock.
00:01:31Two weeks ago this was glock, a heavy and frightening backward impact into the wall
00:01:36at the hockenheim ring.
00:01:38He climbed out of the car, clutching his lower back, spent the night in the hospital, but
00:01:42he is back this weekend in hungary, says he's ready to go, went out and proved it in practice
00:01:47and then driving with flair, qualified the best he has ever qualified in formula one.
00:01:53He will start fifth on the grid for the surging toyota team in today's race.
00:01:58Toyota, red bull renault and the williams team locked in a battle for fourth in the
00:02:05constructors championship.
00:02:06Timo glock will have a lot of fans pulling for him today.
00:02:12The cars are on their reconnaissance lap.
00:02:14There's robert kubica.
00:02:15He'll be a big fan favorite.
00:02:17Lots of polish fans here this weekend.
00:02:19There's christian horner, leader of the red bull renault squad.
00:02:22Let's get down to the grid and join peter windsor.
00:02:28Thanks very much, bob.
00:02:29Yes, timo glock, certainly a talking point, but don't forget he also got food poisoning
00:02:33in between that accident in germany and coming here, testing in spain a severe bout of food
00:02:38poisoning.
00:02:39So he deserves that fifth position on the grid, and in some way, timo's qualifying summed
00:02:42up one of the conundrums of this weekend.
00:02:44He'd done a great lap on a used set of harder bridgestones.
00:02:48He put on the new set and went slower.
00:02:49That's a question mark.
00:02:50Everybody's been facing all weekend both the soft and the hard bridgestone not really performing
00:02:56the way people will predict.
00:02:57Is that going to be a factor in the race?
00:02:59Wait and see.
00:03:00The track's certainly going to pick up grip.
00:03:01Equally, it's very, very hot here.
00:03:03The soft tire is going to get a lot of punishment.
00:03:06All right.
00:03:09Thanks very much, peter.
00:03:10Let me correct myself.
00:03:11It is the renault team and not williams locked in that battle for fourth in the constructors.
00:03:15Three teams covered by just two points.
00:03:18As you can see, a beautiful day at the hungaro ring.
00:03:21It's going to be warm, and that will affect tire selection, pit strategy and so much more.
00:03:26But the fans on the hillsides here in three springs valley will love it.
00:03:33Welcome back live to the hockenheim ring.
00:03:35Bob varsha, david hoff, steve matchett and peter windsor glad to be back with you here
00:03:39on speed for formula one action live on sunday.
00:03:43There's sebastian bourdais climbing out of his scuderia toro rosso.
00:03:48He was penalized five places for blocking inadvertently during qualifying.
00:03:52He will start back on the last row for the race.
00:03:56Let's get back down live to the starting grid and rejoin peter windsor.
00:03:59Peter?
00:04:00Thanks very much, bob.
00:04:03Yes, yano truly just getting out of his toyota.
00:04:06We'll have a quick word to yano, I hope.
00:04:08Yano live on speed.
00:04:10Another great qualifying performance from toyota as a team.
00:04:12You must be a little bit disappointed with your own time yesterday.
00:04:15Oh, yeah, definitely with my grid position for sure I could do better, but we had some
00:04:22problem yesterday in my car.
00:04:24I wasn't happy as well with the balance, so I just have to make up some position today.
00:04:30The soft and the hard seems a very unpredictable situation.
00:04:33Certainly was in qualifying.
00:04:34How do you see it panning out in the race now in terms of the temperature and the track
00:04:37rubbering in?
00:04:38Well, certainly won't be an easy decision, so we have to look after the first thing,
00:04:44so we have to look after the first thing, so we have to look after the first thing,
00:04:45so we have to look after the first thing, so we have to look after the first thing,
00:04:46so we have to look after the first thing, so we have to look after the first thing,

00:35:21so we have to look after the first thing.
00:35:29You are laughing like Kovalainen.
00:35:31Same laugh for Kovalainen.
00:35:34Timo Glock having a great weekend, a great story coming into this weekend
00:35:38after his heavy crash in Germany two weeks ago.
00:35:41Just cleared on Thursday to begin practice on Friday for this race.
00:35:45Now you're on board with Felipe Massa.
00:35:47The running order is Massa, Hamilton nearly three seconds back in the McLaren,
00:35:51then Heikki Kovalainen, then Timo Glock in fourth,
00:35:55Robert Kubica's BMW Sauber fifth, Fernando Alonso sixth,
00:35:58Kimi Raikkonen seventh, followed by Mark Webber, Jarno Trulli,
00:36:01and Nelson Piquet, the top ten.
00:36:03As you watch, Raikkonen and now Kubica.
00:36:06Guys, I've got to believe Lewis Hamilton is three seconds behind Massa
00:36:10asking the McLaren pit wall, what are we going to do?
00:36:13This Ferrari is just flying.
00:36:15Yeah, the last couple of laps, Raikkonen really put in the pressure.
00:36:19On now, onto the Alonso.
00:36:22Onto Alonso, yeah, like seven tenths the last couple of laps.
00:36:25I don't think McLaren were expecting this at all.
00:36:27No, I don't think so either.
00:36:29Because all weekend, all day, Friday, every session,
00:36:32every session and Saturday morning practice,
00:36:34and of course the qualifying yesterday, they looked so dominant.
00:36:38And I don't think they expected Felipe Massa to be running up into the distance like this.
00:36:42As you guys have just said, Massa again just set another fast lap at 21.860.
00:36:49On board with Raikkonen.
00:36:52Hamilton just set his best at 21.9, but the last lap,
00:36:55well, we saw that graphic, he's significantly slower,
00:36:59three tenths plus every lap than Felipe Massa.
00:37:02That's right along with Raikkonen.
00:37:22Formula One gearboxes have to last four races,
00:37:49and nowhere did they take a bigger beating, one might argue, than here.
00:37:52Over 3,500 gear shifts during the course of the race.
00:37:56Wow, and Massa does it again, guys.
00:37:5921.479, another fastest lap.
00:38:02Fastest in all three sectors.
00:38:05Our sector times only go down to a tenth of a second,
00:38:07and looking at Hamilton's times, they're absolutely locked and locked.
00:38:1021.4, 21.6, 29.2, they're all the same.
00:38:14I mean, these two guys are absolutely locked there.
00:38:17Well, he is only 2.8 seconds behind.
00:38:19His teammate now is 5.5 seconds behind Hamilton,
00:38:22and Timo Glock is another 3.5 seconds adrift of Kovalainen.
00:38:26Robert Kubica again as a surprise.
00:38:28The BMW's been looking so strong this year.
00:38:30He's down in fifth spot, losing ground.
00:38:33His last, his best lap was a 22.9, as opposed to how Massa's 21.4.
00:38:38That's a big difference.
00:38:39Oh, boy.
00:38:40I'll tell you what, McLaren now must be just hoping
00:38:43that Massa is running light,
00:38:46because even if Massa's got just a couple of laps more fuel on board now,
00:38:51oh, boy, McLaren are really on the back foot.
00:38:54There are still five laps next time under the flag
00:38:57from the opening of the first pit window,
00:39:00if you're on a two-stop strategy.
00:39:07Looking very smooth, isn't he?
00:39:09Yeah.
00:39:12Look for the brake boards.
00:39:14There's one, there's another.
00:39:15Now he's on it.
00:39:19Oh, ladies.
00:39:22Banzo still holding off.
00:39:24Right, and here's Mark Webber.
00:39:26Oh, listen.
00:39:29This is good, Mark.
00:39:30You're pulling away from Trulia.
00:39:31Three tenths a lap.
00:39:32We can stay ahead of him at the stop.
00:39:36OK, I've got a question.
00:39:38Many years ago, when I ran track,
00:39:40our coach would get us to run better
00:39:42by lying to us about our split times
00:39:44and telling us we're going slower than we actually were.
00:39:47Would somebody on the pit wall ever consider
00:39:50trying to boost a driver's confidence
00:39:52by perhaps telling him he's faster than he is?
00:39:54Well, they always put the drivers under psychological stress
00:39:58by suggesting their drive's on the line, that's for sure.
00:40:01Well, they said he was pulling away at three tenths a lap.
00:40:03That graphic showed him pulling away at just over a tenth,
00:40:05but still and all, he is pulling away from Jarno Trulia,
00:40:08which is what he said to Peter right at the top of the show,
00:40:11that he wanted to make sure he got in front of Jarno Trulia.
00:40:14Of course, those radio broadcasts are not in real time either.
00:40:17It's just a snippet that's clipped out
00:40:19and then put on the world feed.
00:40:24And nowhere is the driver's psychology
00:40:26more critical right now than at Honda,
00:40:28where new team principal Ross Braun has said,
00:40:30we want Fernando Alonso next year.
00:40:32I don't know which of our drivers
00:40:34will leave to make room for him if we can get him.
00:40:37But right now, Rubens is doing a good job.
00:40:40Yes, ominous news for poor old Jenson Button,
00:40:43that by the sound of things.
00:40:45When he says one of our drivers will leave to make room for him,
00:40:48what he really means is the one that we'll have to fire
00:40:50to make room for, right?
00:41:02Lewis Hamilton has pulled his gap back from 3.3 to 2.9.
00:41:06His last lap was two tenths quicker than Massa's.
00:41:09His first sector on the current lap is at 29.
00:41:12It's a purple, so it's the quickest sector of the race so far.
00:41:16So maybe Hamilton's now on a bit of a charge,
00:41:18but he needs to be.
00:41:19Here comes a great corner.
00:41:20Oh, we won't see it right now.
00:41:22Hopefully, we'll get back on that for Turn 5.
00:41:25One of those corners where you go as quick as you dare.
00:41:28Well, Timo Glock back and forth
00:41:30is beginning to pull away from Robert Kubica's BMW Sauber
00:41:34and closing up just a bit
00:41:36on the third-place McLaren Mercedes of Heikki Kovalainen.
00:41:39Stay with us for more Hungary.
00:41:43Welcome back live to the Hungarian Grand Prix here on Speed.
00:41:47I'm Bob Barsha, David Hobbs, Peter Windsor, Steve Matchett.
00:41:50You're watching Timo Glock, who remains in fourth
00:41:53between Heikki Kovalainen and Robert Kubica.
00:41:55Meanwhile, up front, Felipe Massa has laid down another fast lap,
00:41:59a 1.21.355.
00:42:01Behind him, Lewis Hamilton, quicker than anybody else on the racetrack,
00:42:05but he is falling behind the fleeing Massa.
00:42:09Yeah, that gap now up to 3.2 seconds.
00:42:12We are now on lap 16.
00:42:14As you were suggesting earlier on, Bob,
00:42:16that pit window will now open up.
00:42:18It's very close call here
00:42:20for Hungary between a three-stop and a two-stop strategy.
00:42:23Both of those windows will open up around now.
00:42:28Ferrari swings on to the front straight.
00:42:30Let's go to Peter Windsor.
00:42:32And, Bob, one of the deciding factors on a two- or three-stop
00:42:35will be the amount of degradation on the tyres.
00:42:37You've got to say... Yeah, go for it, go for it.
00:42:40You've got to say that for a single-tyre manufacturer,
00:42:42we don't often have a chance to say this,
00:42:44Bridgestone are doing an outstanding job so far
00:42:46because the conditions today are terrible.
00:42:48Very, very hot.
00:42:50This is a very hard circuit on traction and turn-in.
00:42:52And at the moment, touch wood, no real sign of graining anywhere.
00:42:55Fantastic performance.
00:42:57Yeah, it's a very good point you bring up there.
00:42:59Talking to the engineers at the pit lane last night
00:43:01to try and get an idea or a handle
00:43:03on the difference between the tyres,
00:43:05they were still scratching their heads even after qualifying.
00:43:08So there's very, very little to choose between the two.
00:43:11Most engineers suggested that the harder of the two tyres
00:43:15will suffer less graining and a little bit more durable,
00:43:18so that'll be the tyre of choice.
00:43:20But be careful, because if it gets hotter
00:43:23or the track temperature changes,
00:43:25that will change the tyre choice as for the second stint.
00:43:28As we've seen now at the start of the race,
00:43:30only Coulthard, the only driver,
00:43:32sole driver on the softer compound now.
00:43:35Two cars and three world champions in your shot.
00:43:38Fernando Alonso has two, Kimi Raikkonen has one,
00:43:40and he is closing up on Alonso visibly for sixth place.
00:43:44McLaren's in the pit lane.
00:43:46And Ferrari as well.
00:43:48I was just going to say that's bad news for McLaren,
00:43:50but Ferrari are here too.
00:43:52Will they pit together?
00:43:54Here comes Massa from the race lead.
00:43:58Did Hamilton go by?
00:44:00I think he did too.
00:44:02I think that was a dummy run that McLaren showed Ferrari.
00:44:06New set of the prime tyres.
00:44:10And a pretty good load of fuel.
00:44:15It's a narrow pit lane here at the Ongaro Ring.
00:44:18Quick tear off of the visor.
00:44:20It's a narrow track.
00:44:22Here comes Robert Kubica.
00:44:24There's a number of teams now getting ready to set up there.
00:44:26They're coming in, as you say.
00:44:28Kubica now into the pits for BM.
00:44:37Steve, before we saw Felipe come in there
00:44:39and show that he was just that little bit lighter than Lewis,
00:44:42I was going to wonder with you
00:44:44whether to get Lewis out of that situation
00:44:46McLaren might try to short fuel him
00:44:48just to get him some track position.
00:44:50But now that we've seen Felipe come in,
00:44:52I guess McLaren will just stick to their standard strategy now
00:44:54and give Lewis every chance at the moment
00:44:56just to gain track position right now.
00:44:58Yeah, I would agree with that.
00:45:00Now, Hamilton's strategy now
00:45:03must be just to push as hard as possible now
00:45:05to try and open up the gap
00:45:07and make best use of the track position he has.
00:45:09Oh, now we've got a Renault sandwich.
00:45:11Right on Alonso's tail now.
00:45:13And Felipe Massa right in front of Alonso.
00:45:16This is going to slow Alonso down a bit
00:45:18as Massa's now full of fuel.
00:45:20Or slow him down a little bit, maybe.
00:45:22One lap later.
00:45:26Now, how much fuel will they put on him?
00:45:28Will they put in this car?
00:45:30Will they short fuel him?
00:45:32They could to change their strategy with three stops,
00:45:34but it's got to be very quick.
00:45:36No, they're not doing that.
00:45:38More prime tires.
00:45:40They changed the wing on the front too.
00:45:42He may actually have a little more fuel than Massa.
00:45:46And if he comes out behind Raikkonen,
00:45:48there they go.
00:45:50Raikkonen.
00:45:52Oh, boy.
00:45:53Well, it couldn't just be worse.
00:45:55Coming back.
00:45:57And the Ferrari crew knows it.
00:45:59That's true.
00:46:02I think there's about three laps more fuel
00:46:04on board the McLaren right now
00:46:06of Lewis Hamilton than on board Massa's car.
00:46:08So, Lewis, probably about three laps deeper
00:46:10into this second stint of the race.
00:46:12Boy, Hamilton seemed to have speed in hand.
00:46:15In fact, he said as much when talking to Peter
00:46:17in the post-qualifying press conference.
00:46:19He said, I have a little more if I need it.
00:46:21Boy, he needs it now.
00:46:23Boy, doesn't he ever.
00:46:25Because Raikkonen,
00:46:27because we know that Raikkonen and Alonso
00:46:29are heavy.
00:46:31They've probably got another three or four laps
00:46:33left here at least.
00:46:35Well, we're right in that window, David,
00:46:37so it could be any time now.
00:46:39Timo Glock now up into third.
00:46:41Make that second with Hamilton's pit stop.
00:46:43Kovalainen on the lead.
00:46:46And only four cars pitting thus far.
00:46:53Now Glock pits from second.
00:46:55There he is.
00:46:57Boy, having a great run.
00:46:59I mean, what a challenge to a driver's confidence
00:47:01to have a huge rearward impact
00:47:03like he did at Hockenheim.
00:47:05Especially because the car broke.
00:47:07If you make that mistake yourself, it's bad enough.
00:47:09But if the car breaks...
00:47:11Boy, are they having problems with the fuel?
00:47:15Long stop.
00:47:17They have to change hoses.
00:47:19I think they have problems with the fuel hose.
00:47:21He had a pretty good gap
00:47:23on Massa.
00:47:27But certainly not enough.
00:47:31We'll have to see where Glock rejoins.
00:47:35Only man to stop on that lap.
00:47:39He'll probably come out behind his teammate,
00:47:41I should think.
00:47:4348 laps of fuel.
00:47:45With 50 laps to go in the race.
00:47:47He said 138 litres.
00:47:49That seems a lot to me, Steve.
00:47:51Do you think that's right?
00:47:53Or did they adjust that time wrong?
00:47:55I wonder if the switch of the fuel hose
00:47:57caused him to mess up their strategy a little bit.
00:47:59I mean, you wouldn't leave him to run out
00:48:01with two laps to go in the race.
00:48:03Sebastian Vettel pits the Toro Rosso
00:48:05and rejoins.
00:48:07Here comes Kovalainen from the lead.
00:48:09130 odd litres.
00:48:11130 odd litres.
00:48:13It would be over 12 seconds delivery time.
00:48:15So I think they were just calculating that wrong.
00:48:17With the change of the hose.
00:48:19The crews had to change fuel rigs.
00:48:25No change to his wing.
00:48:27Oh, they got problems on the left rear.
00:48:29Are you happy, boys?
00:48:31Well, he did put his hand up.
00:48:33He got his hand up.
00:48:35Boy, that's what happened to
00:48:37Alonso here in 06,
00:48:39when the fuel came off.
00:48:41Right turn 2, he was in the tire wall.
00:48:43A lot of fuel went on board Kovalainen's car.
00:48:45That's Piquet's Renault going by.
00:48:51Kovalainen being very careful,
00:48:53heavy on fuel with fresh tires.
00:48:57Right here is where Alonso went off
00:48:59in that dramatic race a couple of years ago.
00:49:01But that's what we see at the Hungaro Ring.
00:49:03Now, Kimi Räikkönen
00:49:05is shown as stopped on track.
00:49:07There he is, moving though.
00:49:09Being passed by everybody.
00:49:11It's an anomaly of the timing
00:49:13and scoring system, Bob,
00:49:15that if you don't pass the sector times
00:49:17in a predesignated number of seconds,
00:49:19it will flash up the fact
00:49:21that the car has stopped,
00:49:23even if it hasn't.
00:49:25It goes out of whack in a way.
00:49:27We had that same problem in Germany
00:49:29two weeks ago with Kovalainen's McLaren.
00:49:31He's falling back a little bit
00:49:33from that fight
00:49:35between Masa and Alonso.
00:49:45Now Alonso pits,
00:49:47followed by Räikkönen.
00:49:49Masa moves back to the race lead.
00:49:51Let's see what happens
00:49:53to the world champion
00:49:55at his Ferrari pit stop.
00:49:57Boy, I'm sure they're definitely
00:49:59hoping they're going to get out
00:50:01in front of Alonso.
00:50:03It's going to be close.
00:50:05Alonso's moving.
00:50:07Oh, Räikkönen was there.
00:50:09Doesn't get much closer
00:50:11than that.
00:50:13Boy, I know it's the fastest way
00:50:15to do the pit stop,
00:50:17but it's the fastest way
00:50:19I know it's the fastest way
00:50:21to do the pit stop,
00:50:23to let the car down
00:50:25before the refueling is finished.
00:50:27But boy, it makes me very nervous
00:50:29when you let the car down
00:50:31and put it back into the driver's hands.
00:50:33Oh, Räikkönen can have a go here.
00:50:35This is it.
00:50:37If he could do it now,
00:50:39he might be able to pull it off.
00:50:41But if he waits...
00:50:43Yeah, I mean...
00:50:45Okay, we're coming into the spot
00:50:47where you can't pass on Stefan Johansson
00:50:49back in 1989,
00:50:51when the Lion of England passed 12 cars
00:50:53on a track where you supposedly
00:50:55can't pass anybody.
00:50:57Pretty much the same fuel load
00:50:59on these two cars now.
00:51:01We've got two champions,
00:51:03Räikkönen one champion,
00:51:05Alonso with two championships under his belt.
00:51:07But the Renault should be no match for the Ferrari,
00:51:09even considering the problems that Ferrari
00:51:11have had recently.
00:51:13I mean, the Renault has been struggling
00:51:15but it just goes to show
00:51:17how difficult it is to make a move
00:51:19on somebody around here.
00:51:2123 laps in, Jarno Trulli
00:51:23pits from 4th place.
00:51:25So the order is now Masa,
00:51:27Hamilton, Nelson Piquet
00:51:29maybe on a one-stop again this week
00:51:31as he was two weeks ago in Germany
00:51:33where he finished on the podium.
00:51:35So the Leinen will move up to 4th.
00:51:39Oh, there's some revs.
00:51:41Oh, boy!
00:51:43Back up, boys. I'm about to drop the clutch
00:51:45and I don't know what's going to happen.
00:51:51That's Räikkönen going by.
00:51:55Sebastian Vettel
00:51:57pits from 20th and the report
00:51:59is he took him right into the garage.
00:52:01Boy, what a lousy
00:52:03weekend Sebastian Vettel has had.
00:52:05No laps at all on Friday.
00:52:07Well, nine, a handful, four in the morning,
00:52:09five in the afternoon.
00:52:11Before flying laps here between him.
00:52:13Qualified well, though, in 11th.
00:52:15Qualified well in 11th.
00:52:21So it's Masa,
00:52:23Hamilton, Piquet,
00:52:25Kovalainen,
00:52:27Glock, Coulthard, Alonso.
00:52:31What's happened?
00:52:33That's Vettel slowing down.
00:52:35Taking Kimi Räikkönen.
00:52:37Yeah, I thought we'd seen this before.
00:52:39This is what happened to Räikkönen.
00:52:41This is what happened to Räikkönen in the first place.
00:52:43When we saw it stop.
00:52:45When Räikkönen disappeared, yeah.
00:52:47Then Vettel squeezed him out.
00:52:49That'll make old Räikkönen pretty cheesed up.
00:52:51And then does it again. Well, he takes the corner.
00:52:53He tried to let him by.
00:52:55And eventually did, I assume.
00:52:59Räikkönen has it all to do again
00:53:01to pull up on Fernando Alonso.
00:53:03Yeah, but he's
00:53:05fed up with that ING wing right in front of him.
00:53:09There's Vettel in the garage.
00:53:11Oh, Bourdais is in the garage.
00:53:15There's Vettel.
00:53:17Yeah, the driver is standing there.
00:53:19Curse you, font person.
00:53:21We were right.
00:53:23We made a mistake.
00:53:25We thought we made a mistake.
00:53:27We thought we made a mistake, but we were wrong.
00:53:3124 laps in the book.
00:53:3346 to go in the Hungarian
00:53:35Formula One Grand Prix
00:53:37here on Speed. We'll be back.
00:53:41Back live at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
00:53:43Round 11 of 18 in the 2008
00:53:45Formula One season here on Speed
00:53:47with Peter Windsor, David Hobbs, and Steve Matchett.
00:53:49I'm Bob Varsha. You ride with Lewis Hamilton
00:53:51and no sign on the road
00:53:53ahead of the race-leading Ferrari
00:53:55of Felipe Massa.
00:53:57Yeah, timing and scoring has shown that gap
00:53:59to be 2.7 seconds.
00:54:03There he goes around the corner ahead.
00:54:05I think Hamilton
00:54:07should be good to go to around lap 52.
00:54:09Massa to lap 49.
00:54:11So, Hamilton needs to
00:54:13keep on the tail now. He needs to keep
00:54:15that gap down. He doesn't want that gap to go over
00:54:173 seconds at all. He's got to close it down
00:54:19as much as possible, but certainly not
00:54:21anything over 3. The order is Massa,
00:54:23Hamilton, Kovalainen, Bloch,
00:54:25Coulthard, Alonso, and
00:54:27Raikkonen. Nelson Piquet Jr.
00:54:29pitted while we were in break and picked up
00:54:31two positions on the rotation over
00:54:33Giorno Trulli and Robert Kubica.
00:54:35Mark Webber's 11th, then Nick Heifeld,
00:54:37Jenson Button, Rubens Bottichiello,
00:54:39Sebastian Bordet, Nico Rosberg,
00:54:41Kazuki Nakajima,
00:54:43Giancarlo Fisichella, and Adrian
00:54:45Sutil. Sebastian Vettel is out of the race.
00:54:47Peter Windsor.
00:54:49Well, Bob, just to add to the complexity
00:54:51of this race between Felipe Massa and
00:54:53Lewis Hamilton, two guys very evenly
00:54:55matched. This is a fantastic motor race
00:54:57and it's a little bit like Silverstone.
00:54:59Who's quick in Sector 1 usually
00:55:01has to sacrifice a bit of speed in Sector 2,
00:55:03Sector 3. The tyre cannot
00:55:05take being hard for the entire
00:55:07lap. We see here, typically
00:55:09Felipe is slightly quicker on Sector 1.
00:55:11Lewis usually slightly
00:55:13quicker on Sector 2.
00:55:15It is very close and there's a tremendous harmony between
00:55:17these two drivers as well. They are good friends and
00:55:19in the unilateral interview yesterday after
00:55:21qualifying, Lewis just looked across
00:55:23at Felipe and said, how was your lap, mate?
00:55:25And Felipe was completely open with him
00:55:27and Lewis said, that was me, you passed
00:55:29on the out lap. You didn't have a problem, did you?
00:55:31And they were very open with one another. A great
00:55:33relationship between these two drivers and now
00:55:35a great motor race between them.
00:55:37There's David Coulthard. Thanks, Peter. David Coulthard
00:55:39in the Red Bull Renault. Notice the
00:55:41white stripes on the front bridge stones.
00:55:43No sign of them on the rears. That's because
00:55:45he hasn't stopped yet. He is pummeling
00:55:47those super soft
00:55:49option tyres. Apparently on a
00:55:51one-stop strategy. He started
00:55:5313th and he's up to 5th.
00:55:55Yeah, I mean, to do a one-stop
00:55:57strategy around here is almost unheard of,
00:55:59quite frankly. And especially
00:56:01on this tyre in these temperatures.
00:56:03Yeah, exactly. The soft tyres
00:56:05on this track.
00:56:07There's a floor stay
00:56:09loose on the car right there. There's a little
00:56:11titanium floor stay in front
00:56:13of the right rear tyre which attaches
00:56:15the bottom of the floor,
00:56:17the diffuser, up onto the
00:56:19kick-up panel on top of the car.
00:56:21And that is broken loose on the
00:56:23car which will affect to a degree right
00:56:25here. There's a little floor stay you can see
00:56:27and it's come loose at the bottom section. There's broken
00:56:29off. He shouldn't give a great deal
00:56:31of problem. He should be able to continue racing
00:56:33but the problem is that you get
00:56:35vibration on the floor and that'll
00:56:37upset the aerodynamics to a degree.
00:56:39It shouldn't put him out of the race at all.
00:56:41And he'll feel the vibration. Those bodywork
00:56:43vibrations are very severe and he'll think
00:56:45it's something to do with the
00:56:47running gear. He'll almost certainly think he's
00:56:49got either a big flat spot or
00:56:51something that's off
00:56:53his mechanical side.
00:56:55They're hard to tell but boy those
00:56:57aerodynamics can make the car
00:56:59vibrate like...
00:57:01It puts a flutter through the car.
00:57:03Well of course the engineers have the same world feat
00:57:05pictures that the rest of us do so
00:57:07hopefully their engineers have picked up on that as well
00:57:09and they'll be on the radio to Coulthard. Of course
00:57:11Coulthard will be on the radio also if he can feel that
00:57:13saying, you know, can you see anything on the
00:57:15camera? Speaking of
00:57:17David Coulthard, I mean long-time
00:57:19Formula One fans can remember when 100
00:57:21on 3 was a long career. This weekend
00:57:23David Coulthard
00:57:25and Rubens Bottichello become the first
00:57:27pair of active drivers with
00:57:29500 combined starts
00:57:31between them. And speaking of old things
00:57:33don't miss the 35th Rolex
00:57:35Monterey Historic Automobile Races
00:57:37at Laguna Seca in California.
00:57:39Hundreds of amazing
00:57:41historic racing cars
00:57:43and they will be on track running
00:57:45for you to watch and listen
00:57:47to. August 15th to the 17th
00:57:49You can find tickets at
00:57:51montereyhistorics.com or call
00:57:531-800-327-SECA
00:57:55S-E-C-A and we'll see you there
00:57:59I was just trying to see what the guys would
00:58:01do working around the right of the car
00:58:03I'm not sure whether or not they pulled that bodywork
00:58:05to stay clear of the car or not. I couldn't see
00:58:07because there were too many bodies blocking the way
00:58:09but Coulthard now onto the
00:58:11prime tyres, the hard tyres
00:58:13Oh sure he still has one stop
00:58:15Oh these two got together in a crash
00:58:17at Hockenheim
00:58:19The two most experienced drivers
00:58:21in Formula 1
00:58:23I guess
00:58:25well you could have fun with that all day. It was the oldest
00:58:27crash in Formula 1 history
00:58:29or something like that. Well that bodywork
00:58:31stays still flapping around on the red ball chassis
00:58:33so the mechanics didn't cut it loose
00:58:35What do boys learn in 500 starts
00:58:39That's an amazing number
00:58:41That's an amazing number
00:58:45David Coulthard did not
00:58:47take on enough fuel to go the distance
00:58:49so he will have to make another
00:58:51stop
00:58:57Giancarlo Fisichella
00:58:59pits and back out
00:59:01in the Force India Ferrari. Fisichella
00:59:03one of the veterans, rumoured to be
00:59:05racing for his career
00:59:07The team is not terribly happy
00:59:09It is rumoured
00:59:11with Giancarlo Fisichella's application
00:59:23That's what you think when you can
00:59:25About what?
00:59:27The new Batman movie?
00:59:31I suspected
00:59:33Maybe that David Coulthard
00:59:35had radioed in that we didn't hear saying
00:59:37Just as you suggested David
00:59:39There's something wrong with the car
00:59:41Maybe they called him in a little bit
00:59:43early to change the tyres
00:59:45Unaware that that
00:59:47floor stay was a problem. It could well be
00:59:49that David Coulthard wanted to make this a
00:59:51one-stop strategy on those
00:59:53soft tyres and switch to the hard but David
00:59:55came in a little bit too early because
00:59:57he thought he had a problem with the tyres
01:00:01Well I thought DC said
01:00:03have a drink when you can
01:00:05Moving swiftly on
01:00:07What we're not hearing of course is the radio from
01:00:09Felipe Massa and Lewis Hamilton. That's what we
01:00:11really want to hear
01:00:13Really want to hear because then we would know what
01:00:15these two teams actually think about fuel
01:00:17Steve I don't know what you think but I think
01:00:19if we could listen to Lewis' radio
01:00:21now he'd probably be saying
01:00:23Look guys you said you were comfortable at Hockenheim
01:00:25Are you really comfortable that three seconds
01:00:27is enough for me to take the lead in the second stop?
01:00:29That's probably what he's saying. I may be wrong
01:00:31but it's possible. Steve what do you think Massa
01:00:33is saying to his guys? I think Massa
01:00:35is just thrilled to be out there
01:00:37in front of the McLaren in this race quite frankly
01:00:39Earlier on we were suggesting that
01:00:41they didn't want that gap to open up above
01:00:43three seconds. Those seniors that
01:00:45made that first comment is it clicked over in time
01:00:47and it's going to three seconds and now it's up
01:00:49to 3.6 so I'm sure
01:00:51the McLaren engineers are telling Lewis Hamilton
01:00:53you've got to get back on pace with the Ferrari
01:00:55You must close that gap down
01:00:57More pit stops. Nico Rosberg
01:00:59Adrian Sutil have all pitted
01:01:01Jason Funton pits the Honda
01:01:03and Sebastian Bourdais in the Scuderia Toro Rosso
01:01:05Here's your top 8
01:01:07We'll be back in a moment to Hungary
01:01:11Welcome back to Hungary
01:01:13That was a shot of Kaznak Ajima leaving the
01:01:15Williams Toyota pits with fire but not as
01:01:17serious as this fire suffered by
01:01:19Rubens Barrichello in the Honda pit
01:01:21And this is the third fire that we've
01:01:23seen so far. Guys these fellas
01:01:25have got a problem with the refueling equipment
01:01:27and I'm going to put it down to the incredible high
01:01:29This is Bourdais. Keep your eye on Bourdais
01:01:31He has a problem with the fuel hose
01:01:33on fire here. Around here
01:01:35you see them spraying the
01:01:37fire extinguisher onto the car
01:01:39Keep your eyes around here. You'll see it all flash into the car
01:01:41right here. They send Bourdais on
01:01:43his way but it's clear that all
01:01:45this equipment. This is Kaznak Ajima
01:01:47Again keep your eye on the refueling
01:01:49There's another fire
01:01:51but we're not out of the woods yet because
01:01:53Honda as we've just seen, they have a problem
01:01:55too. Now bear in mind
01:01:57that all the refueling equipment is made
01:01:59by Intertechnique. None of the teams
01:02:01are allowed to manufacture the FIA
01:02:03approved equipment so it's all standard
01:02:05stock stuff that can't be modified at all
01:02:07But I'm going to put it down to
01:02:09it's just. I'm going to put it down to
01:02:11a heat problem. It's just so incredibly hot
01:02:13that the tolerances
01:02:15are so tight between the fuel
01:02:17hose and the nozzle on the car
01:02:19that they've just started to jam up
01:02:21You can see the confusion on the team's
01:02:23faces now. What do you want us to do?
01:02:25Boy this is a serious problem. The FIA
01:02:27have got to take a swift look at this and decide
01:02:29what to do about it. Well because
01:02:31the equipment is made by an outside contractor
01:02:33I would imagine nobody in the team really has
01:02:35the expertise to step in there and
01:02:37make whatever provisional repair
01:02:39you might need. Well the mechanics have the ability
01:02:41of course to be able to strip the things
01:02:43down, service and repair them but they're not allowed
01:02:45to modify them in any way
01:02:47I mean, you know, talking from
01:02:49personal experience back when I was racing
01:02:51we've had that problem when Benetton removed
01:02:53the filter
01:02:55from the rig thinking that they had permission
01:02:57to do so. But you're not allowed
01:02:59to do that and after the fire that we had
01:03:01at Hockenheim in 94
01:03:03they absolutely stamped it very clear
01:03:05the FIA say the teams will not
01:03:07in any way modify the equipment
01:03:09at all and it has been written in stone
01:03:11ever since
01:03:17The tyre belt on board now has not
01:03:19stopped yet. He's the only guy that hasn't
01:03:21stopped but he's still only up to 11th
01:03:23in spite of that so a little bit
01:03:25off the pace. His team mate Robert Kubica
01:03:27has stopped but he's only a couple of spots
01:03:29in front of him. So Robert Kubica has dropped from
01:03:314th on the grid to 9th in the race
01:03:33again BMW not having a very happy
01:03:35weekend. And now we're
01:03:37coming into that area where we've
01:03:39already lapped down to 14th and Massa
01:03:41is going to start running for traffic soon
01:03:43and obviously that has got to go
01:03:45in his favour although he now has a four
01:03:47second lead over Lewis Hamilton so
01:03:49the Ferrari showing an incredible
01:03:51turn of the pace here
01:03:53in this race. At least Massa's Ferrari
01:03:55Raikkonen is still 6th
01:03:57within a second of Fernando Alonso but
01:03:59unable to get by
01:04:03Getting back to that fuel situation in case
01:04:05you think a little spilled fuel fire is not a big
01:04:07deal. Those rigs are
01:04:09pressurised and they're meant to deliver fuel
01:04:11at 3 litres per second
01:04:1312 litres per second?
01:04:1512 litres per second yeah
01:04:17It's about 3 gallons
01:04:19a second. So you're right, there's a few, yeah
01:04:2112 litres a second
01:04:23And that fuel fire that Benetton had in
01:04:2594 was caused by just a quarter
01:04:27of a second. I mean it was a massive
01:04:29fireball. It was a quarter of a
01:04:31second of fuel flow so they are
01:04:33incredibly dangerous things
01:04:35Look at the way that
01:04:37Kovalainen is being dropped by his
01:04:39teammate. Kovalainen's last lap was
01:04:41a 23.4. Hamilton's
01:04:43was a 22.2 and Massa's was
01:04:45a 22.2. Massa and Hamilton
01:04:47the only two guys in the 22s
01:04:49and everybody else is in the 23s
01:04:51right down from
01:04:53Timo Glock
01:04:55right down to Jenson Button in 13th spot
01:04:57Well Kovalainen lost ground to
01:04:59his teammate ahead of him. He was also
01:05:01being caught up by Timo Glock
01:05:05at a pretty prodigious rate
01:05:07Peter Windsor
01:05:09Oh yes Bob, I was going to add to that
01:05:11Timo Glock has reduced what was a
01:05:13seven second gap to Heckey just
01:05:15after the pit stops down to four seconds
01:05:17Having said that, on that last lap he lost
01:05:19half a second to Kovalainen so the gap's
01:05:21back to five seconds but Timo Glock going
01:05:23really well in that Toyota
01:05:29Another shot here of Kovalainen going through that
01:05:31chicane at the top of the hill
01:05:36I must say that I thought
01:05:38we were looking for a McLaren 1-2
01:05:40this weekend
01:05:43Baymassa just absolutely
01:05:45gripped the whole thing by the throat
01:05:47he's done a magnificent job
01:05:49unlike his teammate Kimi Räikkönen
01:05:53There's Timo Glock, pit stop
01:05:55More problems, yes
01:05:57This is the first one
01:05:59we saw there where they had to switch rigs
01:06:01We're doing a little montage now of
01:06:03fuel rig problems but wow
01:06:07You can see how important it is to be right
01:06:09there with that fire extinguisher
01:06:14Oh, wow
01:06:18That's going to grab your attention
01:06:24We're just discussing contracts, we have to do this?
01:06:30Well, anybody who saw your Benetton fire
01:06:33in that German Grand Prix, Steve
01:06:36Oh, it's a frightening thing and all the teams
01:06:38have been worried about it ever since
01:06:40You have nightmares about it
01:06:42Peter Windsor
01:06:44Bob, I was only going to add
01:06:46we were talking at the start of the show about
01:06:48KERS for next year, can you imagine what this situation
01:06:50would be like if we had those big lithium KERS
01:06:52batteries in there as well?
01:06:54Well, those are the incidents you talked about
01:06:56in your lead up to those interviews with people
01:06:58about the KERS technology
01:07:00It's the Red Bull team that had to evacuate
01:07:02their team base because of a fire
01:07:04while crewmen were dealing with
01:07:06the R&D batteries
01:07:08and then the BMW Sauber team
01:07:10went off to test their system
01:07:12The car pulled into the pit lane
01:07:14one of the mechanics reached over to push it
01:07:16in the garage and got an electrical shock
01:07:18that knocked him several feet away
01:07:20and he spent the night in the hospital
01:07:24So it is a tricky and somewhat dangerous
01:07:26area of R&D that Formula 1
01:07:28is getting into
01:07:32In the name of environmental friendliness
01:07:34We'll take a break and return
01:07:36We'll take a break and return
01:07:38Right now it is Masa by 4.3 seconds
01:07:40over Luz Hamilton
01:07:42We'll be back
01:07:46Through the final corner and onto the front straightaway
01:07:48to complete lap 40
01:07:52We arrive with Felipe Masa
01:07:54on the map, on the left of your screen
01:07:56you see the relative positions of Masa, Hamilton
01:07:58and Kovalainen, the top three cars
01:08:00here in the Hungarian Formula 1 Grand Prix
01:08:02on speed
01:08:04And Peter Windsor on Bob Marcia
01:08:06The order is Masa, Hamilton, Kovalainen
01:08:08Then Timo Blach
01:08:10doing sterling work this weekend
01:08:12for Toyota. Fernando Alonso
01:08:14and Kimi Raikkonen continue their personal
01:08:16battle in 5th and 6th
01:08:18Nelson Piquet, 7th, and another good run
01:08:20by a rookie driver, Jarno Trulli is 8th
01:08:22Robert Kubica, 9th
01:08:24Mark Webber, 10th, then Nick Heidfeld
01:08:26in the second BMW Sauber, David Coulthard
01:08:28has dropped back to 12th
01:08:30Jensen Button, followed by
01:08:32Kazuki Nakajima, and then you've got
01:08:34four cars running very close together
01:08:36Nakajima, Fisichella, Rosberg, and Bordet
01:08:38and Adrian Sutil
01:08:40and the other four, Sandia Ferrari, pulling up
01:08:42Hamilton off at the top of the hill
01:08:48Something wrong, that left front is flat
01:08:50Oh it's flat, it is flat
01:08:54Get ready boys, get up, get up, and get out there
01:08:56Punctured left front
01:08:58The world championship leader
01:09:00coming in
01:09:02Oh boy
01:09:04There goes his teammate
01:09:06Kovalainen will move by in the second
01:09:08in replay
01:09:10It's already flat before he went wide
01:09:12here at the 6th corner
01:09:16Well if Lewis is capable of getting the car
01:09:18back to the pits
01:09:20which he should be able to do without
01:09:22any big suspension damage
01:09:24Remember he did it in Turkey last year
01:09:26Seven seconds of fuel will get him the rest of the way
01:09:28but boy oh boy, he's losing so much time now
01:09:30as a result of this
01:09:32This could be the world championship right here
01:09:34Like it was in Turkey last year really
01:09:38He's got to be so careful now
01:09:40That thing comes off
01:09:42or unwinds
01:09:44He made the pit in
01:09:50You can be sure the fans in that front stretch grandstand
01:09:52will take note
01:09:54The championship leader is in
01:09:56So it's Massa, Kovalainen, Glock moves up
01:09:58to the third and final podium position
01:10:00Fernando Alonso
01:10:02up into 4th
01:10:06Kimi Raikkonen will be 5th, Nelson Piquet 6th
01:10:14Oh, now of course he's got to do
01:10:16a long stint
01:10:18on the option tyre
01:10:20Here comes Nick Heidfeld for his one stop
01:10:24from 11th
01:10:28Hamilton rejoins, there's Mark Webber
01:10:30who, excuse me, David Coulthard
01:10:32in the other red bull
01:10:34Yeah, the last thing Hamilton wants now
01:10:36is to get stoked beyond that red bull
01:10:38So Hamilton rejoins 11th
01:10:40Now let's have a look at it
01:10:52Lewis Hamilton had just gone purple
01:10:54in sector 3
01:10:56before beginning this lap
01:10:58and down in turn 1
01:11:00he saw the tyre just mushroom up
01:11:02Oh boy, I mean that just couldn't be worse
01:11:04The whole lap on a flat tyre
01:11:06So that's going to cost him
01:11:08Keep it off the gravel
01:11:10He did a good job there
01:11:12and if you try too hard of course
01:11:14the temptation to rush back
01:11:16but of course then the thing will come unraveled
01:11:20Here's Ron Dennis
01:11:22Mansour Ojeh
01:11:24two of the partners in McLaren
01:11:26and you can almost see it in the body language
01:11:28of the crew
01:11:30Lewis, what are you doing?
01:11:32Oh, you've got a problem
01:11:34Meanwhile, Timo Glock
01:11:36newly arrived in 3rd place
01:11:38just turned in
01:11:40the fastest lap in the field
01:11:42that last time by
01:11:44a 21.671
01:11:46well quicker than
01:11:48Massa or Kovalainen ahead of him
01:11:50Yeah, there's only one guy that's running in the 21s
01:11:52and that's Glock
01:11:54He's only 4 seconds behind Kovalainen now
01:11:56Massa 22.2
01:11:58Kovalainen 22.3
01:12:00and then Glock 21.6
01:12:02A couple of laps ago
01:12:04he just set the fastest 3rd sector time of the race
01:12:06There it is
01:12:0810th place with Heidfeld's pit stop
01:12:10and as you just saw
01:12:12Lewis Hamilton is trying hard
01:12:14locking up that left front
01:12:18which may have been the kind of driving
01:12:20that contributed to that
01:12:22failure of the left front tyre
01:12:24We'll take a break
01:12:26a dramatic turn in both the Hungarian
01:12:28Grand Prix and the World Championship
01:12:32Back in Hungary moments ago
01:12:34this was race leader Felipe Massa's
01:12:36second stop for Ferrari
01:12:38I think what
01:12:40they're doing here, I think Ferrari have pit him in
01:12:42early, we have a
01:12:44Massa with about 4 laps more fuel on board
01:12:46and I think what they're doing
01:12:48is playing cautious here just in case
01:12:50of a safety car, they have such a lead now
01:12:52that to prevent
01:12:54Hamilton closing up in case
01:12:56of a safety car period and putting Hamilton
01:12:58in the pound seats
01:13:00because he has refueled to go the rest of the distance
01:13:02I think Ferrari just called him
01:13:04in early to get rid of that
01:13:06Just covering Hamilton's possible moves
01:13:08Kovalainen you just saw going out of your picture
01:13:10moves into the race lead
01:13:12Massa re-enters the track
01:13:14in 2nd just ahead of Timo Glock
01:13:162007
01:13:18GP2 champion
01:13:20really putting a stamp
01:13:22on this race for Toyota
01:13:24Having a great run, I mean he just
01:13:26doing very very quick laps
01:13:28Still doing quick laps
01:13:30Consider he's had 3 heavy crashes
01:13:32thus far this year
01:13:34Very rugged debut with Toyota
01:13:36Although he's not
01:13:38technically a rookie, he's in his 15th
01:13:40Formula 1 start
01:13:42And you're on board with him

01:24:14Back live to the Hungarian Grand Prix on Fox, you see Nelson Piquet making his final stop.
01:24:24Moments ago, Jarno Trulli made his final stop and dropped out of the top six.
01:24:30Piquet rejoins, Trulli coming around now, this is the two, the two guys we were waiting
01:24:36to stop have, and they come out as close together as they could possibly be.
01:24:40Piquet hip-jabbed you there, coming out of turn one.
01:24:43He said, I watched Lewis Hamilton do this to Felipe Massa two weeks ago in Germany,
01:24:48I can use the whole racetrack.
01:24:52So, the order right now is Massa, Kovalainen, Glock, Raikkonen, Alonso, Hamilton, and then
01:25:02Piquet and Trulli, and Trulli is truly irritated.
01:25:08Here it is again.
01:25:11I mean, this is a good go to legitimate pass, but by the same token, Nelson Piquet had every
01:25:18right to use all the road there.
01:25:20Here we see it from the outside, it was a very fast entry, something he wouldn't be
01:25:23able to maintain the momentum, he'd have to give up a little bit, but Piquet wasn't having
01:25:27any of it.
01:25:29Well, that was a very good pass there.
01:25:32And David, do you not think it crossed Nelson's mind what Giano did to him on the second lap
01:25:37of the race, when he just darted out from the toe and got him at turn one, exactly that
01:25:41corner.
01:25:42I think there was a bit of payback there from Nelson.
01:25:44Absolutely, Nelson Piquet, that was a very clean bit of driving by both drivers.
01:25:49And Nelson defended, and defended well.
01:25:54So here we go, with 15 laps to go.
01:25:58Coming up tonight here on Speed, step into the wind tunnel with Dave Despain, everybody
01:26:03has an opinion, or rightly so.
01:26:05Tonight, Tim Sindrick from Penske Racing steps into the tunnel to give you a different perspective
01:26:10on running multiple racing teams.
01:26:12Don't miss it, wind tunnel tonight, 9pm Eastern, live on Speed.
01:26:21On board with Timo Glock, looking for a podium finish here in Hungary.
01:26:25That would be the first, his first career podium, equaling Toyota's 2005 result here
01:26:31with Ralf Schumacher.
01:26:33Well, this will be a tremendous result, both Glock and the team, remember, Trulli's down
01:26:37there in eighth, there's another point for him.
01:26:39Well, of course, this track is a real mechanical grip track, you've got to have good traction,
01:26:43you've got to have good mechanical grip, and it's obvious that Toyota are getting closer.
01:26:47I mean, this is not a fluke, I mean, they've done very, very well.
01:26:51So the car's obviously good around here now, they need a bit of aerodynamic help.
01:26:55There's so many great stories coming out of this race, not only Glock, but Felipe Massa,
01:26:59as I mentioned, never finished in the top six on this track in five previous starts
01:27:03right now.
01:27:04He is in line for a dominant victory.
01:27:07Heikki Kovalainen looking for his first podium since the Malaysian round nine races ago,
01:27:11and on the downside, what has happened to BMW Sauber?
01:27:15This was the race where Robert Kubica came into the Formula One world with a bang a year
01:27:19ago, and though the car was just a couple of pounds underweight, he was robbed of that
01:27:24podium finish two years ago.
01:27:28Today, they just seem lost.
01:27:30Kubica currently ninth, Heidfeld eleventh, and this is the team that is second in the
01:27:34constructors' championship.
01:27:38Yeah, things are not going their way in this second stage of the season.
01:27:42As we said before, you know, the rate of development from the other teams has affected them,
01:27:46and Toyota, as we've just been saying, they are taking the fight to BMW for best of the rest now.
01:27:55If they miss out on the points, and that's the way they're running right now, it would
01:27:59be the first time in 28 races that BMW Sauber has not had at least one car in the points.
01:28:09This, of course, will be a heck of a setback for Lewis Hamilton's world championship quest,
01:28:15there's no doubt about it.
01:28:16They thought they were going to clean up here.
01:28:18Obviously, the next race is a complete unknown.
01:28:20Valencia in Spain in three weeks' time.
01:28:24So that's going to be an interesting battle there.
01:28:27But in all the testing in the last two races, McLaren have looked very dominant, but Felipe
01:28:31Massa, at least Felipe Massa, has looked very, very good in this race.
01:28:35Incredibly good.
01:28:36And, you know, it just makes you wonder how much of the swings and roundabouts has it
01:28:41been a McLaren resurgence or a temporary lapse for Ferrari.
01:28:47How about that battle for fourth place in the Constructors' Championship?
01:28:50I talked about Toyota, Red Bull and Renault.
01:28:52Toyota has two cars in the points, as does Renault.
01:28:55Red Bull, Renault has none.
01:28:59No, they've had a disappointing day too.
01:29:00Weber down in 10th, Guttal in 12th.
01:29:03On board now with Felipe, there he is.
01:29:08I would say that with just 12 laps to go, he's just cruising along there.
01:29:1411 seconds in front of Kovalainen.
01:29:20It does seem an extraordinary turnaround of fortunes for Ferrari because, you know, as
01:29:25you were saying there, going into this race, it was certainly McLaren were looking very
01:29:30strong and even in practice and qualifying.
01:29:33You know, with Massa saying, as Peter was suggesting earlier on, I just made a mistake.
01:29:37That was the time difference.
01:29:39I'm just not happy with the balance of the car.
01:29:41And as soon as the last guy in the race gets underway, he's just shot into the distance
01:29:45like a potential champion.
01:29:47Well, he will move into the championship lead, as you just saw.
01:29:50As they run right now, Massa will move into the lead by three points over Hamilton, who
01:29:56will have a five-point gap over Kimi Raikkonen, who will have an eight-point margin over Robert
01:30:02Kubica in fourth.
01:30:04And the Constructors' Championship, Ferrari will pad their lead.
01:30:08McLaren will leapfrog over BMW Sauber into second.
01:30:12And Toyota will take sole possession of fourth place.
01:30:20It's an opportunity to enjoy Felipe Massa and the Ferrari.
01:30:26Oh, Timo, wait, wait, wait.
01:30:27You've got this podium to go collect.
01:30:30Yes.
01:30:31Don't lose those points now.
01:30:32Don't toss it now.
01:30:33Not after all this work.
01:30:39So, 11 laps to go in the Hungarian Grand Prix.
01:30:43Round 11 of the 2008 Formula 1 season.
01:30:46We'll be back in just a moment.
01:30:51Welcome back to the Hungarian Grand Prix.
01:30:53You're watching the man who is fastest on track right now, Kimi Raikkonen, fourth place
01:30:57in his Ferrari.
01:30:58But he just set the first fast lap we've seen since lap 16.
01:31:03But that's a little early for Raikkonen.
01:31:05Last year, he prevented Lewis Hamilton from taking the grand slam of pole leading every
01:31:10lap victory and fast lap when Raikkonen scored fast lap of the race on the very last lap
01:31:16of the race.
01:31:17Well, Kimi Raikkonen is absolutely flying along.
01:31:21Every lap now is well into the 21s.
01:31:23He's only five seconds behind Timo Glock.
01:31:25He is determined in the next nine laps to try and nail down that final podium spot.
01:31:31And he's just driving incredibly.
01:31:33Where the heck has he been all the rest of the weekend?
01:31:36If Raikkonen holds on to it, it'll be his seventh fast lap in the last eight races.
01:31:41He was going for a record time seventh in a row in Germany two weeks ago.
01:31:45But he was nipped by Nick Heidfeld.
01:31:47Well, another fast lap for Raikkonen, guys.
01:31:50Yeah, 1.21.195 with nine laps to go.
01:31:54And look at it.
01:31:55Massa's pace is well up front.
01:31:57I mean, he's leading now by 9.6 seconds, but he's running now in the 23s.
01:32:02Well, the force India car is moving slowly.
01:32:05That's a brake failure.
01:32:07A brake failure or a rotor wind.
01:32:09You know, I was just about to say, looking at the way that Massa's pace dropped off at the last Grand Prix,
01:32:15and we understand that was down to rear brake problems.
01:32:18Looking at Massa's pace throughout the whole of the race,
01:32:20I wonder whether or not Massa is once again nursing problems with the brakes around here.
01:32:25Because 9.6 seconds is not a great, great safety margin.
01:32:29But I tell you, Massa now is in the 23s.
01:32:31The fellas behind him are all running 22s.
01:32:34Kovalainen, Glock and Raikkonen's down in the 21s.
01:32:37And Hamilton is consistently in the high 22s.
01:32:42He's nothing like as quick as Alonso.
01:32:44I don't understand why Hamilton with those tyres and the way that car's been going all weekend.
01:32:49I just don't know what they've done for their race setup.
01:32:52But Kimi Raikkonen now.
01:32:54There's Timo Glock just ahead.
01:32:57He just did a 21.195.
01:32:59His last three laps have been his fastest laps.
01:33:02I mentioned he did the fastest lap of the race on the last lap last year.
01:33:06This is a bit of a habit for Kimi.
01:33:08At Hockenheim two weeks ago, he set his fastest lap on the next-to-last lap of the race.
01:33:14He just seems to come alive at the end.
01:33:16Maybe he's worried about missing the flight home.
01:33:21Timo Glock now must be getting just a little bit nervous.
01:33:25He's only just two or three seconds behind Timo Glock, and he was about eight.
01:33:35Boy, oh boy, what a season we've had in Formula 1.
01:33:38If the current standings hold and Felipe Massa moves to the race lead,
01:33:42it'll be the sixth different race championship leader we've had.
01:33:47Sixth change of championship leader in 11 races.
01:33:55Steve, one other aspect of Kimi's performance perhaps we should look at
01:33:58is that maybe he just does a better job than most on the softer of the two Bridgestone tyres.
01:34:03We know Ferrari have been talking all year about getting the hard tyre.
01:34:08We have a radio transmission for Timo Glock.
01:34:12And it was a beauty.
01:34:17But no, just to finish what I was saying there,
01:34:20we know that Ferrari have had a problem getting the hard tyre to work
01:34:23and maybe the way Kimi drives is slightly less aggressive
01:34:26with all the functions in the steering and the throttle.
01:34:29Massa can get a little bit more out of the hard tyre,
01:34:31but on the soft tyre, Kimi comes into his own.
01:34:34There's Mike Gascoigne, the technical director at the Force India team.
01:34:37He had a close look at Adrian Sutil's brakes.
01:34:40Well, what we thought was a brake problem was the fact that his right front tyre was flat.
01:34:48I think he just made a massive lock-up.
01:34:51Maybe so.
01:34:54There goes Timo Glock and here comes Kimi.
01:34:57He's Kimi Räikkönen and he's not the sort of guy you want coming up behind you.
01:35:03We'll take one more break and then take you all the way to the chequered flag.
01:35:06Glock versus Räikkönen for the final podium position in Hungary.
01:35:13Back live at the Hungaro Ring.
01:35:16Five laps remaining.
01:35:17There is Kimi Räikkönen and just ahead of him, the third place Toyota of Timo Glock.
01:35:23Buckling his way to hopefully a podium finish here in Hungary.
01:35:35Of course, for Kimi Räikkönen, finding Timo is one issue.
01:35:38Passing Timo is another.
01:35:42Well, you know, we don't know what Timo is like under extreme pressure.
01:35:45And when you've got someone like Kimi Räikkönen breathing down your neck, that is serious pressure.
01:35:51It looks like Adrian Sutil will take the Force India car to the garage.
01:35:56I'm amazed he came back out after what looked like a pretty significant mechanical issue.
01:36:02I'm also a little surprised they take those just red hot race cars straight into the garage.
01:36:12Four laps to go for race leader Felipe Massa.
01:36:16Heikki Kovalainen 6.7 seconds back in second place.
01:36:21Timo Glock in third.
01:36:23And Kimi Räikkönen just behind him, as you watch.
01:36:25Then Fernando Alonso, Lewis Hamilton, Nelson Piquet and Jarno Trulli fill out the points.
01:36:30Well, if Kimi Räikkönen gets around Timo Glock, that will add a huge amount of points to the championship total for the Ferrari team, too.
01:36:39With a first and a third, boy, they'll really pull ahead of McLaren.
01:36:44Look at the lap times between Glock and Räikkönen on that last lap.
01:36:47It's just three one-thousandths of a second between them and they're absolutely lost there.
01:36:51Unbelievable.
01:36:53There's Adrian Sutil.
01:36:55Yeah, great show.
01:37:00So, David, if you're driving Kimi Räikkönen's car now and you're hunting down Glock around the Hongaro ring, what do you do?
01:37:05Where do you make the move?
01:37:06Well, you've just got to keep easing up with him and you've got to get right behind him as you come out of that turn 14.
01:37:12Because going down into that turn one is really the place to get him.
01:37:17And he keeps moving up on...
01:37:20It's no good making a great job of these top-of-the-hill corners because you can't do anything with him.
01:37:26But here he comes into turn 12.
01:37:28He can get through turn 12 and 13 and stay right on Glock's tail.
01:37:32And as he goes through 14, try and get a tow down the straight and get him into turn one.
01:37:37Both cars.
01:37:38Masa, the race leader, has lost the engine in the Ferrari.
01:37:44There's the podium that Masa will not see.
01:37:47Well, you know, I was just saying earlier on about that gap.
01:37:50It didn't seem to be a very comfortable lead.
01:37:52And was he potentially nursing a problem?
01:37:54It looks to me, guys, like that's exactly what he was doing.
01:37:57He was trying to mask a problem, overheating problem on the car.
01:38:01Oh, with three laps to go.
01:38:03Unbelievable.
01:38:05Awful.
01:38:06Oh, my gosh.
01:38:07Oh, Felipe Masa just can't do...
01:38:10Get it right here at Hungaroring.
01:38:13And this is obviously nothing to do with him, obviously.
01:38:15Look at the fluid pool of oil underneath.
01:38:17Oh.
01:38:18Back in 97, Damon Hill had, of all cars, the arrows in position to take its first-ever Formula One win here in Hungary.
01:38:26And the car failed him with a lap to go.
01:38:29This is that kind of heartbreak.
01:38:31Oh, goodness me, how he must be feeling.
01:38:35Oh, my gosh.
01:38:37Well, Masa will not get a victory, but behind him, Heikki Kovalainen is now in position to get his first career win.
01:38:45What a great drive, too.
01:38:47The start, just absolutely brilliant.
01:38:51Well, over the years, McLaren and Ferrari have dominated on this racetrack on the two occasions in the last dozen years or so when they didn't.
01:38:59It was because somebody came through with one of those Hungarian surprises I talked about.
01:39:03Fernando Alonso took his first win here.
01:39:06Jenson Button took his first and, thus far, only win here.
01:39:09And now, Heikki Kovalainen, his joy is Masa's heartbreak.
01:39:14Kovalainen is in position to win.
01:39:17But he's got two laps to go yet.
01:39:19Bob, don't tell me anything could happen here.
01:39:21As you talk about, it could be a real surprise that Timo Glock could win it.
01:39:27And Raikkonen has suddenly dropped off the pace.
01:39:30Big time. Raikkonen's last lap was at 25 as opposed to...
01:39:33He's suddenly four and a half seconds behind him.
01:39:35That's right. I don't want to be...
01:39:36As opposed to just a couple of tenths behind him.
01:39:38So maybe he's been told to dial it back, sunshine.
01:39:41I'm not going to do a Lee Diffie here and give somebody the victory before the flag.
01:39:45Oh, wow.
01:39:47Heikki Kovalainen and McLaren, they must be...
01:39:50What on earth has just happened to us?
01:39:53BMW now back in the points, too.
01:39:57What an amazing race.
01:39:58And as you guys were saying, Raikkonen dialing it back.
01:40:02I'm sure about that.
01:40:03I'm sure they would have been on the radio, too, from the pit wall saying,
01:40:06Kimi, dial it back.
01:40:08He's now, what, four and a half seconds behind Glock.
01:40:12Well, you'll hear from...
01:40:14You'll hear from Masa tonight on the speed report.
01:40:17It's a shame we don't get to hear from any but the top three finishers
01:40:22in the post-race press conference.
01:40:24It might be just my eyes deceiving me, guys, but we missed the shot.
01:40:27The corner, the left front corner of the car.
01:40:30It looked very odd, didn't it?
01:40:31Yeah, it did seem to be moving a lot more than is normal.
01:40:36I can't say I saw anything broken on there,
01:40:38but it seemed to have a lot of roll in the chassis.
01:40:43Now, there he comes in the front.
01:40:46On screen right.
01:40:52It doesn't look right.
01:40:53I wonder whether or not the roll bar, David,
01:40:55the sway bar's broken, maybe.
01:40:58Or damper's given up, probably.
01:41:00Shock absorber's given up.
01:41:02There's something not right with the left front of the Ferrari.
01:41:07He's got Lion's heart in his mouth.
01:41:11Yeah, that gap now between Raikkonen and Glock is up to 6.2.
01:41:15So now Raikkonen is just holding on, hoping, just hoping, hoping
01:41:19to cross the finish line with this car.
01:41:21Hamilton not going to be able to get around Alonso.
01:41:24He's still two seconds behind.
01:41:26So Timo Glock is going to end up second.
01:41:29What a day for GP2 drivers, Kovalainen and Glock.
01:41:37Well, a few races ago in the British Grand Prix,
01:41:40he picked up his first career Formula One pole.
01:41:43And now, in the most unlikely way, unless you're in Hungary,
01:41:47Heikki Kovalainen is the surprise winner of the Hungarian Grand Prix.
01:41:54Amazing.
01:41:55And with that, he becomes the 100th different driver
01:41:59to score a victory in Formula One.
01:42:04Timo Glock, second for Toyota.
01:42:07Kimi Raikkonen brings the Ferrari home third.
01:42:11Fernando Alonso will be surprised to know he's in fourth place.
01:42:15Lewis Hamilton comes back to fifth.
01:42:18Nelson Piquet, back-to-back points, finishes for Renault
01:42:22in Germany and here in Hungary.
01:42:24Jarno Trulli will make it two Toyotas in the points in seventh.
01:42:28And unofficially, Robert Kubica will salvage a little bit of honor
01:42:32for BMW Sauber with the eighth and final point.
01:42:40Well done, Heikki, mate.
01:42:41Well done. Absolutely brilliant job there.
01:42:43Fantastic.
01:42:44Well, a lot of hard work has gone into that one, Heikki.
01:42:46Well done.
01:42:48You don't have that trouble at the end, but this time it worked for us.
01:42:51Fantastic.
01:42:55Welcome to the world of winning, Heikki.
01:42:59First of many.
01:43:00Well-deserved win.
01:43:07Well, Heikki Kovalainen, who was confirmed for 2009
01:43:11as Lewis Hamilton's teammate at McLaren Mercedes this week,
01:43:14has had to endure an awful lot of questions about being the number two guy.
01:43:18And maybe he is at McLaren Mercedes.
01:43:21But today, it's his turn to shine in the sunlight
01:43:25as a Formula One Grand Prix winner.
01:43:28We'll be back to hear from him and see the podium.
01:43:34Back in Hungary as winner Heikki Kovalainen
01:43:38pulls his McLaren Mercedes into the pit lane
01:43:41after an amazing day.
01:43:44Just as we were all getting puffed up to salute Felipe Massa on Ferrari's comeback,
01:43:49the Ferrari failed the Brazilian,
01:43:52and Kovalainen gets his first win.
01:43:55And spare a thought for this guy, Timo Glock,
01:43:57who left the Hockenheimring in Germany two weeks ago
01:44:00in the back of an ambulance,
01:44:02qualified fifth,
01:44:04and now picks up his first career podium in second place.
01:44:09Yeah, good run, but Timo Glock drove well all weekend.
01:44:12It certainly was not a fluke.
01:44:14He qualified right up there near the front and drove a great race
01:44:17and managed to hold off Raikkonen,
01:44:19although Raikkonen suddenly slowed up towards the end.
01:44:21Maybe he thought he had a problem.
01:44:23A lot of Finns here in Hungary.
01:44:26There's a Finnish discount airline
01:44:30that makes a lot of trips to Budapest.
01:44:32So there's a lot of Finns, a lot of Finnish flags up on the hillsides,
01:44:35and they got a treat today.
01:44:37Heikki Kovalainen picks up his first win.
01:44:41What a way to confirm your status
01:44:45on the weekend when you sign a new contract.
01:44:48Yes, absolutely perfect. No doubt about it.
01:44:50And Timo Glock looks like he's celebrating a victory.
01:44:52Why not?
01:44:53Well, he would be feeling lucky, so...
01:44:56That was a great run for him all weekend.
01:44:59Two weeks ago he was seeing stars. Now he's going to see a trophy.
01:45:02It was a great run, and he did a great job to keep Raikkonen at bay.
01:45:06And as we so often see with first-time podium standers,
01:45:09he doesn't know where to go.
01:45:15Here's the weigh-in for Heikki.
01:45:17Congratulations from his countryman, Kimi Raikkonen.
01:45:20Talk about an improbable performance. He's on the podium.
01:45:23Absolutely.
01:45:25He has been lost in the woods the past couple of weeks.
01:45:29But this may be a very important weekend
01:45:31for the reigning world champion as well.
01:45:34We'll take another break and be back for the anthems.
01:45:37Stay with us for more here on Speed.
01:45:42Back in Hungary, the fourth Finnish driver
01:45:45to win a Formula 1 world championship race
01:45:48takes the top step of the podium.
01:45:50Now it'll be Heikki Kovalainen's job
01:45:52to match his three countrymen
01:45:54by going on to win the world championship.
01:46:34CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
01:47:04ANTHEM PLAYS
01:47:24Well done to...
01:47:26Well, the small Finnish town of Suomassalmi
01:47:29now has a new distinction.
01:47:32Home of a Formula 1 winner.
01:47:35And in case you're wondering,
01:47:37those other three Finns are KK Rosberg,
01:47:39Kimi Raikkonen on the podium there with Heikki,
01:47:42and, of course, Mika Häkkinen.
01:47:44All-world champion.
01:47:46Yeah, it's a long time since we heard that Finnish national anthem.
01:47:49We heard so much of it in the late 90s.
01:47:53There's Martin Whitmarsh from McLaren International.
01:47:58Been there forever.
01:48:00Noted as well within the company.
01:48:02Hungarian pottery that he was holding there.
01:48:04Obviously a very big speciality in Hungary.
01:48:07The winner's trophy also of Hungarian pottery.
01:48:11Well, the teams will now take a three-week break
01:48:14before their first ever visit
01:48:16to the street circuit in Valencia, Spain.
01:48:19Budapest is a wonderful town to have a celebration in.
01:48:22I would imagine Heikki Kovalainen and McLaren Mercedes
01:48:25are going to have a big one.
01:48:27And maybe that fellow will show up.
01:48:29He's known to be partial to the occasional party.
01:48:31I mean, can you believe how Raikkonen came alive
01:48:33in about the last ten laps?
01:48:35He's been half asleep all weekend.
01:48:37And suddenly, at the end of the race,
01:48:39he just drove like mad.
01:48:42Both Finns having a quick swig before they wasted on the ground.
01:48:45See how much actually hits the ground.
01:48:49Well, Kovalainen's first win,
01:48:51and I'm sure it won't be the last.
01:48:56Well done. A storybook weekend for him.
01:48:58A new contract, his first win,
01:49:01and a big step up in the championship.
01:49:03And a huge weekend for Timo Duck, too.
01:49:05I mean, and Toyota.
01:49:09So we do not have that sixth different championship leader.
01:49:14Because Lewis Hamilton, by salvaging fifth-place points,
01:49:17will remain the championship leader,
01:49:19but it will close up.
01:49:21Hamilton over Raikkonen,
01:49:23who leaps ahead of his teammate Felipe Massa,
01:49:25who must be on suicide watch right now.
01:49:27Absolutely.
01:49:28And Robert Kubica remains in fourth place.
01:49:31Lots more to come here in the post-race
01:49:33for the Hungarian Formula One Grand Prix on Speed.
01:49:36So stick around. We'll be right back.
01:49:40Welcome back. As has become traditional,
01:49:42the racetrack has turned over to the fans
01:49:44here at the Hungaroring.
01:49:46Meanwhile, our top three finishers
01:49:48are up in the interview room with our Peter Windsor.
01:49:51Winner of the ING Hungarian Grand Prix,
01:49:53for Vodafone, McLaren, Mercedes,
01:49:55Heikki Kovalainen.
01:49:56Heikki, what an amazing day for you.
01:49:59It's been a long walk to this race.
01:50:01Describe your feelings as you cross the line.
01:50:04Yeah, of course. Of course, very happy.
01:50:07You know, like you mentioned,
01:50:09there's been various incidents earlier this year,
01:50:11when we've been in a position after Saturday
01:50:14quite a few times to fight for a victory.
01:50:17But always something has gone wrong
01:50:19and it hasn't functioned perfectly.
01:50:23And today, obviously, you know,
01:50:26Massa and Luis were both very fast
01:50:28at the beginning of the race.
01:50:29About halfway through the race,
01:50:30I felt this was starting to work for me
01:50:32a little bit better.
01:50:34And then at the end,
01:50:35I just tried to put pressure on Massa,
01:50:37hoped that, you know, something would happen.
01:50:40And it obviously looked like he had a mechanical failure.
01:50:43So, you know, it all worked fine for me today.
01:50:46And I'm very, very happy about it, of course.
01:50:48And all the hard work that the whole team
01:50:52has put in the last few months,
01:50:54and, you know, through difficult times,
01:50:56just keep pushing.
01:50:57It's very respectable.
01:50:59And I'm very, very glad to score the first victory.
01:51:03The car looked particularly good,
01:51:04as you say, in that last stint on the softer tyres.
01:51:07How quick was the car then relative to Felipe, do you think?
01:51:11Well, it's difficult to say what he was doing,
01:51:13but I was catching him, you know,
01:51:15quite a big chunk every lap.
01:51:17And the target was to try to put pressure on him
01:51:20and, you know, take all the power from his engine
01:51:23and, you know, everything that I could do
01:51:26to put pressure on him.
01:51:27And like you said,
01:51:28my car felt particularly good on the last stint.
01:51:30And the first two stints,
01:51:32I was a little bit cautious earlier this year.
01:51:34I've had some troubles with the tyre degradation
01:51:37and I was just worried that if I crossed that edge again
01:51:40that I might start to struggle.
01:51:41So I just kept my own pace
01:51:44and tried to increase bit by bit.
01:51:48And then on the last stint, it all worked fine for me.
01:51:51And in the last couple of laps,
01:51:52as you knew you were leading the race
01:51:54heading towards your first victory,
01:51:55and then hearing the Finnish anthem being played for you
01:51:58on this occasion on the podium.
01:51:59Yeah, it's fantastic. It's a great moment.
01:52:02And of course, it's been a moment
01:52:03that I've been targeting for many, many years now
01:52:06since I started to get an idea about the possibility
01:52:10to become a Formula One driver in the junior categories,
01:52:12starting to work very hard and, you know,
01:52:15improve my fitness and spend a lot of time
01:52:17to achieve this goal, to finally achieve it.
01:52:19You know, it's very, very, very pleasing.
01:52:21And hopefully this is first of many.
01:52:24And, you know, now we just need to keep the concentration
01:52:27and have a little break,
01:52:28trying to maximise even this break
01:52:30and then go to the next round and trying to repeat it.
01:52:34Congratulations to you, Heikki.
01:52:35Thank you.
01:52:36And Timo, congratulations to you too.
01:52:38Two weeks ago, you were leaving the circuit
01:52:40on a stretcher in an ambulance.
01:52:41Now here you are celebrating your first ever
01:52:43podium finish in Formula One for Panasonic Toyota.
01:52:47It's just unbelievable.
01:52:49I couldn't believe when I saw Philippe's engine going off
01:52:53and I knew I was P2 and got the pressure from Kimi.
01:52:57And with the soft tyres at the end,
01:52:58I struggled quite a lot.
01:53:00We knew that already on Friday,
01:53:02that soft tyres will be difficult.
01:53:05But at the end, it's just unbelievable.
01:53:07And after the race in Hockenheim,
01:53:09where we had a good race pace and the big crash,
01:53:13and now we came to Budapest
01:53:15and just kept the speed here
01:53:17and just had a really good car from Friday on.
01:53:21And we never did a really big change on the car
01:53:23and it was just perfect until the last stint with soft tyres.
01:53:26It was a bit tricky, but unbelievable.
01:53:29I mean, my first year, half of the season over,
01:53:32and I'm on the podium.
01:53:33It's just a perfect weekend.
01:53:35And a great start to the race too,
01:53:36to get by Robert Kubica.
01:53:38Talk about that and then also that moment
01:53:40at the top of the hill there in the closing stages,
01:53:42under pressure from Kimi when he did run a bit wide.
01:53:45Yeah, I mean, you know,
01:53:47I had to improve myself a little bit
01:53:49in terms of the start,
01:53:50in terms of my reaction time was not perfect
01:53:53in the first couple of races
01:53:54and I just improved myself on it.
01:53:56And I think the start time was just really, really good
01:53:59and could accelerate out Robert
01:54:02and had a good first corner.
01:54:04And then the last stint,
01:54:06when I saw I was nine seconds in front of Kimi,
01:54:09I had a reasonable pace.
01:54:11But then they told me he's just five tenths quicker per lap
01:54:14by nearly a second.
01:54:15And I just tried to push more and more
01:54:18and I just destroyed the tyre every time.
01:54:19So I had to really be focused on the tyre
01:54:21and just keep it easy, keep it cool
01:54:24and don't get too much under pressure from Kimi.
01:54:26Well, Kimi did back off in the last couple of laps,
01:54:28but prior to that, what was your mindset?
01:54:30Were you thinking he can catch me,
01:54:32but no way he's going to get past?
01:54:34Yeah, I knew.
01:54:35I mean, last year from GP2,
01:54:36I stuck in the middle of the field here.
01:54:38I think we had a really, really quick car,
01:54:39but I couldn't get past anybody.
01:54:41And even in Formula One, it's just more difficult.
01:54:45And when he was close to me,
01:54:47I could see in the mirror that for two laps,
01:54:49he nearly couldn't catch up more.
01:54:52So I thought, OK, just no mistakes
01:54:54and keep it on the track and that's it.
01:54:56Congratulations, a fantastic result for you.
01:54:59And Kimi, well done from where you were on the grid,
01:55:01a difficult qualifying session.
01:55:02And then for most of the race,
01:55:03trapped behind Fernando Alonso's Renault,
01:55:06but it all came alive for you
01:55:07in the last stint on the soft tyres,
01:55:09a great pit stop leading up to that too.
01:55:11Yeah, I mean, I think we could have managed
01:55:14to do the race a little bit better,
01:55:17but we were stuck behind Alonso
01:55:19all the way until the second stop.
01:55:22And then on the in-lap,
01:55:23I was like eight inches faster on my own.
01:55:25But I mean, it was a bit late on that point,
01:55:28but at least we had a good car.
01:55:30We got in front of him and I was able to catch Timo,
01:55:32but then we needed to back off in the end.
01:55:36I mean, we were a bit lucky
01:55:38with all the people going all over the places
01:55:41and end up most of the points
01:55:43from the first three guys in the championship.
01:55:46But I mean, we have the speed in the race,
01:55:49but if I cannot get the qualifying right,
01:55:51we're going to end up every race in the same situation
01:55:54like here in the last race.
01:55:56So we need to sort it out.
01:55:57If we can be in the front, then we can fight for wins.
01:56:01But in this position, we just follow people
01:56:04and we cannot use the speed.
01:56:05So the guys did a good job,
01:56:07but we just need to fix a few problems
01:56:10and then for sure we can be back in the hunt for wins.
01:56:15What was it like when you were catching Timo towards the end there?
01:56:17Were you thinking there was going to be a possibility to pass him?
01:56:20I was ready to try anything.
01:56:22So I don't really care if I would have lost or win at one point,
01:56:27but unfortunately we needed to back off.
01:56:30So we were much faster like we were with Alonso,
01:56:33which is why it's so difficult.
01:56:34If the guy in the front doesn't make a mistake,
01:56:36it's really, really difficult to get past.
01:56:38So you need to get something very special on one corner
01:56:42to get close enough.
01:56:43But at least we got him behind,
01:56:49but unfortunately I couldn't try to pass him.
01:56:51But I mean, third place in the end after a very difficult weekend
01:56:55for me was a good result.
01:56:59Congratulations to you, Kimi.
01:57:00And Heikki, just returning to you for some final thoughts.
01:57:03Firstly, again, just reflect as time goes on
01:57:06on this first victory of yours and the feeling of that.
01:57:09But beyond that, where do you think the balance of power now lies?
01:57:12Felipe Massa led the race for a long time for Ferrari.
01:57:15Luis was second.
01:57:16You were there spectating, if you like.
01:57:19And now we go to Valencia with a three-week break.
01:57:21How do you see the Ferrari-McLaren battle?
01:57:24I think it's still very, very close
01:57:26and it's very difficult to draw any conclusions
01:57:29which one is ahead.
01:57:30It just depends on the day.
01:57:32Whoever nails it on that day is just a little bit ahead.
01:57:35And it's so sensitive at the moment
01:57:38that if you don't get the setup perfect
01:57:40and if you don't get the tyres feeling perfect
01:57:42and you're driving perfect,
01:57:44there can be three, four guys straight away ahead of you.
01:57:47And I think it's quite interesting.
01:57:49I think it's really spectacular for the fans
01:57:52and also for us.
01:57:54It puts a lot of pressure for everybody to maximise everything
01:57:57and it should be a very interesting end of the season
01:58:00to see when all the teams and all the people are pushing really hard
01:58:03and see who comes out on top at the end.
01:58:06Congratulations to you.
01:58:08That's a battle we're all going to enjoy.
01:58:10Heikki, still all to play for
01:58:12in the Formula One World Championship
01:58:14with seven rounds to go.
01:58:15We'll be back.
01:58:18Welcome back.
01:58:19There's the McLaren Brand Centre
01:58:21where a big party will be going on shortly
01:58:23to celebrate Heikki Kovalainen's maiden Formula One victory.
01:58:26Here's a look at the final results of the Hungarian Grand Prix.
01:58:30Well, there you see it.
01:58:31Kovalainen with his first ever victory at Hungary.
01:58:33Timo Glock a great run there to second spot in the Toyota.
01:58:36Kimi Räikkönen a bit lucky to finish third, quite honestly.
01:58:38Alonso had a good run in the Renault.
01:58:40Lewis Hamilton had that flat tyre
01:58:41and managed to pull himself back to fifth.
01:58:43The BK scoring points again.
01:58:44The Arno truly scoring more points for Toyota.
01:58:46And Robert Kubica just salvaging that last point
01:58:49for BMW Sauber.
01:58:52Down nine through to 14.
01:58:54Mark Webber for Red Bull and his teammate down there
01:58:57started on those soft tyres.
01:58:59David Coulthard down in 11th out of the points.
01:59:01Nick Heidfeld also out of the points for BMW.
01:59:04And the runners 15 through to 20.
01:59:06Look at Felipe Massa.
01:59:08So nearly won the race.
01:59:10He finishes up P17.
01:59:12And here are the championship standings.
01:59:14The swings and roundabouts of fortune.
01:59:16Hamilton still leads.
01:59:17But look at that.
01:59:18Very closely followed by Kimi Räikkönen
01:59:20and Felipe Massa.
01:59:21Robert Kubica still not that far behind.
01:59:23Nick Heidfeld still in 41.
01:59:25Heikki Kovalainen obviously scored 10 points today.
01:59:27The Arno truly scored some more points today.
01:59:29And Fernando Alonso scored more points today.
01:59:31As did Timo Glock.
01:59:33So a lot of drivers there.
01:59:35Close together really.
01:59:36Nelson Piquet scored points today.
01:59:38And there you see down Sebastien Bordet
01:59:39with just two points.
01:59:41How about the constructors, Steve?
01:59:43Ferrari still out in front.
01:59:44111.
01:59:45But look at this.
01:59:46McLaren Mercedes jump over BMW Sauber.
01:59:49McLaren now on 100.
01:59:50And the other big mover is Renault.
01:59:52They leapfrog over Red Bull.
01:59:5424 points to 31 in favour of Renault.
01:59:57Toyota scored but they don't...
