00:00:00They have made the continents their stepping stones in the pursuit of the Formula One World
00:00:05Championship.
00:00:06Six races so far, three men have won two each.
00:00:10Perfect symmetry.
00:00:11There's the English prodigy, last year's instant hero, this year's man on a mission.
00:00:16Ferrari's finish ace, the defending world champion, indifferent out of the car, in it
00:00:21a magician.
00:00:22Kimi's resilient teammate, held back by costly errors in the past.
00:00:26If they're behind him, he could be champion.
00:00:28Three winning drivers, only one championship.
00:00:31And a big step toward it will come today here in Montreal, as Fox Sports presents the Grand
00:00:36Prix of Canada, next.
00:00:37It's right now, boys.
00:00:38Right now.
00:00:39Victory for the first time in his career.
00:00:40Come on, mate.
00:00:41He's ruining that race.
00:00:42Let's get past him.
00:00:43They touch it, smoke coming off the tire.
00:01:06Thirty years ago, a young driver named Gilles Villeneuve became the first Canadian to win
00:01:10a Formula One Grand Prix.
00:01:12That was a miraculous victory in the first race on Villeneuve's new home track in Montreal,
00:01:17a track that now bears his name.
00:01:19Welcome to the 30th World Championship Canadian Grand Prix from the circuit Gilles Villeneuve,
00:01:24live on Fox.
00:01:25Hello, everyone.
00:01:26I'm Bob Varsha.
00:01:27Alongside David Hobbs and Steve Matchett, Peter Windsor is live in the garage area.
00:01:31The field of 20 is on their formation lap in preparation for the traditional, and in
00:01:36this case, critical standing start.
00:01:38We kick things off with the Bridgestone starting grid, headed by two of the young lions of
00:01:42the sport, Lewis Hamilton and Robert Kubica.
00:01:45As we move through the grid, let's check our Toyota storylines for today's Grand Prix.
00:01:50David Hobbs, kick it off.
00:01:51Well, of course, the most critical thing is yesterday, the track was breaking up during
00:01:54qualifying.
00:01:55They could sweep it between sessions, but of course, that's not going to be so easy
00:01:57today.
00:01:58And the gravel builds up off track with the rolled up rubber.
00:02:00It could be very, very dicey as the race progresses, which could lead to what, Steve?
00:02:04Well, if that happens, David, if it starts to break up, they will have the safety car
00:02:08effect, similar to a full course caution.
00:02:12They'll bunch up behind the safety car.
00:02:14That will affect fuel strategy.
00:02:16These guys will have to refuel at least once, if not twice.
00:02:19Bob?
00:02:20Keep an eye on the front row.
00:02:22Two of the young lions, as I mentioned, two men with very different memories of Montreal.
00:02:26Last year, Lewis Hamilton took his first career pole and victory for McLaren Mercedes here.
00:02:31Robert Kubica, on the other hand, suffered a massive crash in his BMW salver.
00:02:36On the second row, two former race winners and world champions in Kimi Raikkonen, Fernando
00:02:40Alonso, and arguably the hottest driver in the series, Felipe Massa's Ferrari is outside
00:02:45row three.
00:02:46The field is set.
00:02:47Here come the lights.
00:02:49the start.
00:02:50Rossberg going around the outside there, Alonso slipping back there, Massa got around Alonso.
00:03:10That's one of the corners that's breaking up, you saw that shiny line.
00:03:13Two drivers, Sebastian Vettel and Jenson Button, started from the pit lane after mechanical
00:03:17difficulties yesterday in qualifying.
00:03:20So Lewis Hamilton in the McLaren, leading this pack away.
00:03:24We'll point out the parts of the track that have been resurfaced overnight, particularly
00:03:29down in the hairpin, turn 10, we'll see that very tight hairpin as the cars careen down
00:03:34towards there now.
00:03:35As you can see, not a lot of run-up area here, the walls right alongside the track, a bit
00:03:40of run-up area straight in front of you where this camera is, but other than that, not many
00:03:43places to go off this track here.
00:03:45Hamilton getting off to a good start.
00:03:46On the softer tyres, you can tell that because he has those white stripes around the tyre,
00:03:50that denotes the softer compound of rubber.
00:03:52And here it is, guys, this is turn 10, the tight hairpin, you can see all the oil dry
00:03:57down there and on the inside line where the big Bridgestone B is, they have put some fast-drying
00:04:02epoxy resin all around the inside of there to try and prevent the track breaking up.
00:04:09Probably the biggest victim of that corner over the weekend has been Jarno Trulli in
00:04:13one of the factory Toyotas, a very experienced Italian, but he has had a horrible time coming
00:04:18to grips, literally, with this circuit.
00:04:19Boy, these two Toyota's have been absolutely side-by-side for this entire first lap.
00:04:23Timo Glock and Jarno Trulli.
00:04:26Heikki Kovalainen, the fin for McLaren Mercedes is up to 7th around the Honda of Rubens Barrichello.
00:04:33Interesting to see a mixture of the soft and the super-soft tyres, as you were saying,
00:04:37David, the super-soft tyres denoted by that white stripe around the tyres.
00:04:42At some point during the race, these guys will have to come into the pits to change
00:04:46tyres.
00:04:47It's a requirement of the sporting regulations and in Formula 1, each driver must use both
00:04:52compounds at some point during the race.
00:04:55On board, Felipe Massa's Ferrari.
00:04:57As we ride along with a man who has three poles, two victories and four podiums in the
00:05:10last four races, certainly a threat today in Canada, let's hear from Peter Windsor.
00:05:14Thanks, Bob.
00:05:15Yes, some surprise here in the pit lane that Lewis Hamilton chose to start on those super-soft
00:05:20Bridgestones.
00:05:21But the general feeling is that those tyres are going to be the least effective, and the
00:05:24argument is, they're saying, well, Lewis is going to get rid of them in this first stint,
00:05:28so when the track does deteriorate later on, he's going to be on the harder tyre.
00:05:32Also interesting to see Robert Kubica very nicely defend his position off the line.
00:05:36He was on the dirty side of the grid, Kimi Raikkonen made a great start, but Robert very
00:05:40nicely positioned the BMW to retain second place.
00:05:43Nico Rosberg up to fourth spot there, he qualified down in fifth, he got around Fernando Alonso
00:05:50early on in the yellow Renault, obviously Alonso, a two-time world champion, a winner
00:05:55here in 06.
00:05:56Just to give you an idea, a brief idea of the benefits and deficits of the two tyres.
00:06:03The super-soft tyre, the tyre with the white stripe round, should, should give a little
00:06:08bit more grip.
00:06:09Now, let's have another look at the start.
00:06:11Hamilton on the right, Kubica on the left.
00:06:16Drivers immediately jockeying for position, from high overhead, on a very blustery day
00:06:21here in Montreal, wind gusting to about 20 miles per hour.
00:06:25I just wanted to highlight the two cars over there at the pit lane exit, two cars choosing
00:06:29to start the race from pit out.
00:06:32Jenson Button and Sebastian Vettel.
00:06:34Vettel crashed heavily just before qualifying, couldn't take part in qualifying, and Jenson
00:06:38Button had a gearbox problem, and he couldn't take part in qualifying either.
00:06:42Fernando Alonso there, going very wide as he goes through Turn 1 and into Turn 2.
00:06:49There goes Nico Rosberg round the outside of him.
00:06:52You can imagine what it's like in these open-wheel cars.
00:06:55You do not want to touch tyre to tyre.
00:06:58But wow, look at Hamilton's pace in the McLaren already.
00:07:02We are serving lap 3, 18.211, fastest lap and fastest in all three sectors around the
00:07:09track.
00:07:10Now there's a look at how the drivers' positions have changed from the starting grid.
00:07:15Rosberg, P4, up one from his starting position.
00:07:18Fernando Alonso, P5, down one from where he started.
00:07:21Just to finish that thought, guys, on the tyres, the super soft tyres, the ones with
00:07:25the white stripe, should basically give more grip, but not for very long.
00:07:30The harder compound tyres give a little bit less grip, but they're more durable, which
00:07:34means you can run them for longer in the race.
00:07:37So there are the two things you've got to contend with, that and the fuel load on the
00:07:40car, and trying to juggle exactly when to come in to replace the tyres and top up the
00:07:45fuel at the same time.
00:07:46On board now with Nick Heidfeld, who's chasing Rubens Barrichello.
00:07:49Nick Heidfeld in his BMW, Rubens Barrichello in the Honda.
00:07:53One of his best qualifying of the year so far for Rubens Barrichello.
00:07:56Nick Heidfeld qualified third here last year, and 32nd, whoa, tried, but he got off line
00:08:03there, and that corner is going to break up very, very badly.
00:08:06I think one of the reasons that Hamilton might be on those soft tyres is because you said
00:08:10they won't last as long as the harder tyres, which we have here on Heidfeld's car, but
00:08:14we also think that Hamilton may have qualified a bit on the light side, so he may be coming
00:08:19in earlier than most people for his fuel, his first fuel stop.
00:08:22Yeah, you're right, they did absolutely, and Hamilton again just set the fastest lap.
00:08:26This time, Hamilton in the McLaren leading the race, now in the 17s, 1.17.506, the only
00:08:32driver and car on track to be in the 17 seconds right now.
00:08:36One full second faster than Robert Kubica in the BMW's chassis, currently in second
00:08:41spot behind Hamilton's McLaren.
00:08:42Well, of course, the ideal for him would be to pull out enough so that he could stop,
00:08:46refuel, retire, and go off again without losing first position, but of course, he'd have to
00:08:51be a long way in front, and of course, the safety car that you mentioned earlier on,
00:08:55Steve, that could just negate any big lead anybody has, it's all just gone to naught.
00:09:00Yeah, absolutely, and as soon as that safety car is brought out, should it be brought out,
00:09:04of course, the cars have to bunch up, so any lead that these drivers gain over the opposition,
00:09:10say currently Hamilton over Kubica, nearly three seconds, well, that will be negated
00:09:14as they all line up one after the other behind the safety car, taking away any advantage.
00:09:19This time, Heidfeld tries the Honda once again, he's got him this time in the hairpin.
00:09:25Here's Kazuki Nakajima coming up in the Williams Toyota now, behind Rubens Barrichello's factory
00:09:30Honda, and then Mark Webber of Australia, who had a difficult qualifying yesterday.
00:09:36In knockout Formula 1 qualifying, you have to advance session to session by being quick.
00:09:41Webber was quick enough to move from session two to the all-important run for pole in session
00:09:45three, but he crashed while trying to get back to the pits, such was the state of the
00:09:49racetrack.
00:09:51He couldn't take part in the third qualifying session.
00:09:54Well, guys, we've just been talking about Hamilton and McLaren being fast, but Kubica
00:09:58in the BMW is also fast.
00:10:01The track is split up into three different timing segments, so if we talk about sector
00:10:05one, sector two or sector three, it's different parts of the track.
00:10:09Currently Kubica suddenly fastest in sector one, taking the fight back to McLaren.
00:10:15On board now is Mark Webber in 11th spot, right behind Nakajima in front of him in the
00:10:19AT&T Williams Toyota.
00:10:20In front of him is Rubens Barrichello and Nick Heidfeld in front of him, so it's a pretty
00:10:25close train of cars here rushing through the Canadian countryside around the island here.
00:10:30Down under that little bridge, heavy braking area now, and now this long lead down to tight
00:10:36hairpin.
00:10:37Here's your race leader currently in the McLaren, Lewis Hamilton.
00:10:41Just touching 200 miles an hour before they put the brakes on for this corner.
00:10:45Here comes Kimi Räikkönen.
00:10:46Nico Rosberg having a good run along, so holding off Felipe Massa still.
00:10:51Here comes Kovalainen in the second of the McLaren.
00:10:56And Heidfeld in the BMW Sauber.
00:10:58Rubens Barrichello holding his train of cars up.
00:11:01They'll all be getting pretty ticked off, the guys who are behind Rubens Barrichello
00:11:04fairly shortly.
00:11:06Final chicane on board with Kaz Nakajima past Champion's Wall.
00:11:10On the exit to that corner, you get as close to it as you dare to open the radius of the
00:11:14corner and get on the throttle quickly.
00:11:16But you have to be careful.
00:11:17If you hop the curb, you will shatter your car against that wall, and some of the best
00:11:21in the world have done it.
00:11:22Yes, sir.
00:11:23They have.
00:11:24It is incredibly difficult around here.
00:11:26As you see the car circulating to the track, any viewers new to Formula One, you'll notice
00:11:31that all subtly different.
00:11:33This is not a single-make formula.
00:11:35Each team is by right a constructor, and they must design, build, test, and race machines
00:11:41of their own construction.
00:11:43Each team a constructor in their own right.
00:11:45You can see just how narrow this track is.
00:11:48The St. Lawrence River is just beyond that wall on the left.
00:11:52Things have settled down a tad.
00:11:57We are now six laps into this race, scheduled for 70 on a beautiful day in the beautiful
00:12:03city of Montreal, Canada.
00:12:05We'll take a break and return with more live Formula One on Fox, the Canadian Grand Prix.
00:12:14The FIA Formula One World Championship on Fox is brought to you by Toyota, moving forward,

00:12:32Welcome back live to Montreal, to the circuit Gilles Villeneuve, named for the patron saint
00:12:37of Canadian racing drivers, who won the very first Formula One race held on this track.
00:12:43His son became the 97 World Champion, Jacques Villeneuve, and today, the 30th edition of
00:12:48the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal is being led by Lewis Hamilton and McLaren Mercedes
00:12:53by nearly four and a half seconds over the BMW Sauber of Polish driver Robert Kubica,
00:12:58then Kimi Raikkonen's Ferrari, Nico Rosberg, Fernando Alonso, and the man with whom you
00:13:04ride, the Ferrari of Felipe Massa.
00:13:07I just want to highlight the tire on the Ferrari there.
00:13:11Let me have another look at it.
00:13:12You'll see they're already starting to suffer a little bit of graining on that left front.
00:13:17You can see the difference in compound left to right as they load the tires up around
00:13:21here.
00:13:22And looking down into that Turn 10, we're watching Piquet and Glockner for P14.
00:13:30Down in Turn 10, the tight hairpin we're talking about earlier on, it's already, I believe,
00:13:34beginning to break out.
00:13:35There seems to be gravel, a little bit of marbles, which is rubber rolling off the tires,
00:13:40coming on the outside edge of that tight Turn 10.
00:13:44Nico, Nico, well, Nelson Piquet on board here, there, coming off that turn well.
00:13:54Moving up the inside.
00:13:57Timo Glock in the Toyota, pushing him over, but eventually giving way.
00:14:01Oh, no.
00:14:02Counterattacks.
00:14:03Oh, and he gets run into the grass for his trouble.
00:14:06Nelson Piquet's father, of course, won this race three times, in 82, 84, and 91.
00:14:10So Nelson trying to uphold the family honor here, side by side, down to that Turn 1.
00:14:15Slightly ahead.
00:14:16Let's stop.
00:14:17There's Flavio Briatore, the team principal for Nelson Piquet's team.
00:14:24Fernando Alonso, also one of his charges.
00:14:26There's a lot of black smoke dust coming out of the rims of these cars under brake, and
00:14:30it is a very heavy braking track around here.
00:14:34Because of the long tracks, because of the long straights around here, the drivers really
00:14:40slam the brakes on very hard, have a lot of dust coming out, because they're carbon carbon
00:14:46brakes.
00:14:47They're not steel.
00:14:48The rotor itself is made out of sinted carbon, as are the pads, also carbon.
00:14:51So that's why you get a lot of black dust coming out of these brakes.
00:14:55But you have to control the temperature of the brakes on a Formula 1 car very carefully,
00:15:00indeed.
00:15:01And, of course, what tends to happen...
00:15:02As you can see from that graphic there, it's a good bit quicker than Jarno Trulli.
00:15:05He's picked up those on those green sectors.
00:15:07The yellow one, he obviously lost a bit of ground, but all over Trulli now.
00:15:11If he could get by him, I'm sure he could put a lot of daylight between himself and
00:15:14Jarno Trulli.
00:15:15Now, just to finish that thought on brakes, David, you have...
00:15:17There's the dust again coming under the bridge, you'll notice it, but you...
00:15:20Because they're carbon brakes, you have to control the temperature, and the long straights
00:15:24tend to cool the brakes too much.
00:15:27And if they get too cool, you get a lot of heavy brake wear.
00:15:31Nelson Piquet Jr. came up through the GP2 ranks in Europe, sort of the stepping stone
00:15:36to Formula 1, as have a couple of other drivers in this race, notably Lewis Hamilton, the
00:15:41race leader, Nico Rosberg in fourth.
00:15:44He came as known as a very aggressive driver there, and you're seeing that now as he begins
00:15:48to come to terms with a Formula 1 car.
00:15:53Peter Windsor.
00:15:54And we're also seeing here the difference between these tires we've been talking about,
00:15:57the Super Soft and the Soft, without the white line on it that Nelson Piquet is running.
00:16:02It looks as if the Super Soft is starting to go off a little bit.
00:16:05We've seen Nico Rosberg, who's also on that tire, just on two slightly slower laps, and
00:16:09now he's going quicker again, just to try to get the grip back in again.
00:16:12Yeah.
00:16:13Bridgestone, the sole tire supplier in Formula 1, produce a range of four tires, hard, medium,
00:16:21soft and Super Soft, and Bridgestone alone choose the two compounds they'll take to each
00:16:26individual racetrack.
00:16:27So that's why here we refer to the Soft and the Super Soft, one relatively hard to the
00:16:32other.
00:16:33But that decision down to Bridgestone, not the teams.
00:16:37He's truly ahead on the road.
00:16:44Overtaking is not easy in Formula 1 at all.
00:16:47These cars are so evenly matched, and of course the aerodynamics make following behind the
00:16:51car difficult.
00:16:52Oh, here he goes.
00:16:53Down the inside.
00:16:54Renault truly tries to block him, and Piquet gets wide there on that dust and dirt.
00:17:00All that dust in the air.
00:17:01But still manages to pull it off.
00:17:02Wow.
00:17:03Well, there's a bit of a wheel-banging incident there, let's hope it hasn't done any damage
00:17:08to the suspension.
00:17:09Nothing wrong with banging wheels.
00:17:10There's that dust again.
00:17:12There's that loud of dust you were talking about.
00:17:14Particularly bad coming out of that Renault, too.
00:17:16It is, and Renault have been working on this throughout the weekend.
00:17:19Let's have another look at the move, David.
00:17:21Goes down the inside.
00:17:23Gets right on the inside.
00:17:24Wow.
00:17:25Renault truly closes the door, but it's a bit too late.
00:17:27Gives that left front a pretty good belt.
00:17:30And then he has to struggle with all that dust.
00:17:33These cars do not have traction control.
00:17:36The driver controls wheel spin with his right foot.
00:17:38Timo Glock having a look at his teammate, thinking he might get by him as well there.
00:17:42Right behind him is Adrian Sutil in the first of the Force India Ferrari cars.
00:17:47Oh, that's Henke Kovalainen of the McLaren getting wide.
00:17:52Nick Heidfeld of the BMW Sauber.
00:17:54It's a battle to get the power down.
00:17:56Boy, it's already breaking up there at Turn 10, Steve.
00:17:59Yeah, it is.
00:18:00It's what we're talking about before they...
00:18:02Heidfeld staying in here to get a good tow, trying to go around the outside, then he thinks
00:18:06of the inside.
00:18:07No.
00:18:08Wow.
00:18:09Heike's having a look at that.
00:18:10McLaren have been such a dominant force in Formula 1 for so long, and the relatively
00:18:14new team as a constructor, BMW, have just come on leaps and bounds in terms of chassis
00:18:20design.
00:18:21They've got good drivers, great engineers, and it's terrific to see BMW taking the fight
00:18:25to McLaren.
00:18:26We saw Kovalainen move away from that blue and white BMW Sauber.
00:18:31The McLaren Mercedes cars have been the quickest in a straight line all weekend.
00:18:35That last lap, Kovalainen touched 200 miles an hour on the Casino Straight before hard
00:18:41braking for the very slow final chicane.
00:18:43We'll be back.
00:18:47There is the Force India Ferrari of Adrian Sutil.
00:18:50He ground to a halt one lap ago, climbed out of the car and ran behind the wall, but
00:18:55as you see, the residual heat in those front brakes has set the car on fire, and they finally
00:19:00get an extinguisher on it.
00:19:01Well, that's just what we're talking about, Bob.
00:19:03A great visual example of the heat buildup in these carbon fiber brakes, carbon-carbon
00:19:08sintered brakes.
00:19:10They have a core temperature of like 400-500 degrees C, so that's closing in on 900 degrees
00:19:16F.
00:19:17As soon as you lose the cooling air, the ventilated air across those brakes, they are hot enough
00:19:22just to burst into flames, as we saw right there.
00:19:25As you see, yellow flags, local yellow only.
00:19:29No passing in that zone, but drivers are free to race after they pass the scene.
00:19:34It's imperative for a Formula One car design for brake cooling and engine cooling.
00:19:39There are no electronic fans on a Formula One car like you'd find in a road car, for
00:19:42example.
00:19:43They need to be running in clean air, cool air.
00:19:47Now we've got a safety car.
00:19:48I was about to ask, I don't know what they're going to do with Sutil's car, parked where
00:19:51it is.
00:19:52It is a dangerous location, but as you saw from that overhead shot, this track is so
00:19:57cramped, they haven't got a crane there to lift that car out of the way.
00:20:01They may have to throw a safety car, period, which we're used to here in Canada, in order
00:20:05to move that car.
00:20:06Kimi Räikkönen is absolutely chewing into that lead that Robert Kubica had.
00:20:12Look at the lead that Hamilton's got over Kubica, but Kimi Räikkönen just set the
00:20:16fastest lap.
00:20:17There it is, guys.
00:20:18And now the safety car is going out.
00:20:19There it is.
00:20:20Now, under safety car, period, you're not allowed to refuel.
00:20:23I was just looking, actually, at Hamilton's times, thinking, you know, it would be a good
00:20:27time to bring Hamilton in.
00:20:29We're right at that part of the race now, lap 17.
00:20:32The first safety car, excuse me, the first refueling period would be around now.
00:20:38I think McLaren dropped the ball a little bit.
00:20:40They should, in anticipation of that safety car coming out, I would have pitied my guy
00:20:45right there and then.
00:20:46It looked inevitable that they would bring a safety car out.
00:20:49Now, to understand how the safety car, period, works, all the cars will form up behind the
00:20:54safety car, as you see now, and then they will have to wait for a graphic from race
00:20:59control saying pit lane open.
00:21:02Only at that point are the drivers allowed to get into pit lane to be refueled.
00:21:08If they do that before, well, it's contrary to the sporting regulations and they will
00:21:12incur a penalty.
00:21:14Well, of course, the strategy for Lewis Hamilton now is completely shot.
00:21:17He started on those softer tires to get a good lead, which he had.
00:21:22Ferrari in the building.
00:21:23Now it's all come to naught.
00:21:24Pits are closed right now, and this is a rule that there is much talk may be changed in
00:21:29the near future.
00:21:30These drivers get so precise on their fuel that if a safety car comes out when you need
00:21:35to pit, there's no reserve.
00:21:38There's no extra lap you might do to coast around, and we've seen drivers suffer for
00:21:43it.
00:21:44As Steve mentioned.
00:21:45Well, last year, for one, somebody at the Honda has been.
00:21:48Yeah, now you are allowed to work on the car mechanically during this closed pit stop window.
00:21:55You are allowed to change tires or work on the car if it's been damaged mechanically.
00:21:59Now, you see, he's got onto the soft compound tires again.
00:22:03Remember back earlier on when we're talking about the driver's responsibility, they must
00:22:07use both compounds of tires.
00:22:09I think they were seeing Honda do exactly that.
00:22:12Unless they will do just one lap on those soft compound tires.
00:22:16If they're not happy with them, get rid of them, go back into the pits and put the hard
00:22:20tires on, and then you have complied with the sporting requirement to fulfill that regulation
00:22:25concerning tires.
00:22:26That's the Takuma Sato rule.
00:22:27That driver for the now defunct Super Aguri Honda team used that very strategy a year
00:22:32ago in this race.
00:22:34Wound up passing Fernando Alonso's McLaren Mercedes in the final corner for position
00:22:39headed to the checkered flag.
00:22:40He wound up sixth in the points for that little team.
00:22:42Now, nobody else is doing that.
00:22:44Nobody else is diving into the pits.
00:22:45But I'm just wondering about McLaren, whether or not they just timed that wrong.
00:22:51It could be that the pit lane was closed just as Lewis Hamilton was coming down towards
00:22:56pit in.
00:22:57It was very close.
00:22:59So if it was close, that would be the reason why McLaren didn't pull him in.
00:23:02But boy, they just missed their timing.
00:23:04They could have made such an advantage by getting Hamilton into the pits and taking
00:23:08on fuel.
00:23:09He died by the safety car.
00:23:12Nobody knows that better than Lewis Hamilton.
00:23:13Two weeks ago on the streets of Monaco, he touched the barrier, punctured a tire.
00:23:18That would have been a disaster for him.
00:23:20But he had a very short run to the pits to get the tire change.
00:23:23And just as he was exiting, the safety car came out for someone else's wreck.
00:23:27And he regained nearly all of the track position he lost behind the safety car.
00:23:32So far, only Button has pitted under the safety car.
00:23:35He will get a penalty.
00:23:39But if they didn't put fuel in the car, he won't.
00:23:40No, I don't believe that's the case, Bob.
00:23:42I think you're right.
00:23:43I think if he didn't refuel, he should be OK to sporting regulations.
00:23:47So now, what the teams are waiting for now will be that graphic.
00:23:51And we should see it on screen, too, from FOM that will say, Formula One management,
00:23:56that is, the safety car has been deployed.
00:23:58Then we should see another graphic to say pit lane open.
00:24:01And I can guarantee you guys, as soon as you see that pit lane open, there'll be a lot
00:24:05of cars diving into the pits for fuel and tire change.
00:24:09Getting back to the Lewis Hamilton story, the safety car saved him early in the Monaco
00:24:13Grand Prix.
00:24:14But then later on, he built up a 40-second lead on the field.
00:24:18Another accident on a bizarre wet-dry track.
00:24:21Out came the safety car, away went his 40-second lead.
00:24:24He still won the race.
00:24:26But it was a closely fought thing.
00:24:28Looking a bit dusty down there at turn 10, isn't it, just especially on the exit there?
00:24:34On board the safety car, Bernd Maylander, the controls, a veteran of the DTM, the German
00:24:40Touring Car Championship.
00:24:45How about that V8 sound?
00:24:47AMG Mercedes SL63.
00:24:50Here they come.
00:24:51Pits are open.
00:24:52Hamilton, Kubica, Raikkonen, Rosberg, Alonso.
00:24:56Now you're going to see a lot of furious action in the pits.
00:24:59There are going to be stack pit stops now, potentially, which is two teams.
00:25:04Each team have two cars, remember.
00:25:06So both Ferraris are in, and only one pit crew in Formula 1.
00:25:11Now they'll change tires onto the hard compound tires.
00:25:14They will refuel the cars.
00:25:16Here's Rosberg.
00:25:17The cars are pressurized, fed with fuel from fueling rigs, 12 liters a second.
00:25:23Oh, collision!
00:25:24Collision!
00:25:25Hamilton!
00:25:26Wow!
00:25:27Hamilton!
00:25:28Hamilton stopped.
00:25:29I think Kimi Raikkonen beat Hamilton to the punch.
00:25:32He stopped at the red light, and Hamilton ran to the back of him.
00:25:35Oh my goodness!
00:25:37This is Rosberg.
00:25:40There goes Kovalainen by Rosberg.
00:25:42Has broken his front wing.
00:25:44Boy, he has.
00:25:45Now, to the sporting regulations, you're not allowed to reverse the car in Formula 1.
00:25:51The marshals and the mechanics will have to get hold of the car.
00:25:54The cars are fitted with the reverse gear.
00:25:57You cannot reverse in the pit lane.
00:26:00But Lewis is out, guys.
00:26:01It's over.
00:26:02I think Lewis made a terrible mistake there.
00:26:04I think the red light was on, the Ferrari had stopped, and he didn't.
00:26:10Just the second retirement for Lewis Hamilton in 24 career starts.
00:26:16Kimi Raikkonen was pointing at the red light, I think, and Hamilton just brushed it off.
00:26:21He cannot believe it.
00:26:24Well, if you think back to last year's race, guys, when Massa was disqualified for jumping
00:26:30that red light, the red light at the end of the pit lane signifies the pit lane is closed.
00:26:36Now, let's have another look at this in replay.
00:26:39Raikkonen leaves.
00:26:40There's Kubica alongside.
00:26:42They get to the end of the pit lane and stop.
00:26:46Wow.
00:26:47Yeah.
00:26:48Kubica hasn't been touched.
00:26:51Here's Rosberg getting into the back.
00:26:53It just turned green.
00:26:56See it?
00:26:57The light is red.
00:26:58Collision.
00:26:59Collision.
00:27:00Well, green.
00:27:01Lewis Hamilton there could have run into the back of Robert Kubica, but he swerved to the
00:27:07left and ran to the back of Kimi Raikkonen.
00:27:09I'm not sure whether that was deliberate or whether he just thought he could go right
00:27:11around the outside of both of them.
00:27:14But that light was red.
00:27:16There's just no getting away from it.
00:27:19Well, of course, you know, the old blood's up.
00:27:26The red mist comes down.
00:27:27Look at the red light.
00:27:28There's Hamilton's father and manager, Anthony.
00:27:31Not looking happy at all.
00:27:33Williams team gets ready for Rosberg to come around again and put a new front wing on.
00:27:38But boy, oh boy, doesn't this play into the hands of Robert Kubica.
00:27:42Oh, wow.
00:27:44Now to finish the Jensen-Button story we talked about earlier, switching to the option tire
00:27:48for one lap and going back to his preferred tire, Jensen-Button visited the pits again,
00:27:53took off the options and slapped on the primaries.
00:27:59Safety car in this lap.
00:28:0220 laps in, cars officially out, Raikkonen, Hamilton and Sutil.
00:28:12There you see the running order, Heidfeld, Barrichello, Nakajima, Webber and so on.
00:28:17Keep in mind, Heidfeld and Kubica have yet to produce the first victory for the BMW Sauber
00:28:22team.
00:28:23This could be their day.
00:28:24Lewis Hamilton obviously wants nothing to do with the media in the McLaren garage.
00:28:28Oh, boy, oh, boy, big mistake.
00:28:30On the pole in one last year here, on the pole again this year, looking very, very good
00:28:34for a win, but it all came unglued.
00:28:37Dominantly on pole by six-tenths of a second over the field when the track was at its worst.
00:28:43What is wrong with the red light here?
00:28:45Last year, two drivers, one of them Philippe Massa, just jumped over the red light, but
00:28:48this year you can see they've got that great big flashing combination of lights.
00:28:53I mean, you can hardly miss it.
00:28:54Well, we saw it missed in Monaco two weeks ago.
00:28:57Remember, Giancarlo Fisichella missed the red light in Friday practice.
00:29:00Yeah, right, he did.
00:29:02Now, you see the safety car come in.
00:29:04Now, don't forget, all these guys at the front here have yet to stop.
00:29:10Nick Heidfeld, who's had a very troubled start through six races in Formula One this year,
00:29:15now gets to lead away as we restart here in Canada.
00:29:23Philippe Massa back to the pits while the race goes green.
00:29:33Whoa, that's Nakajima locking up big time there.
00:29:37You've got to be careful after these safety car periods.
00:29:39The tires cool off a lot.
00:29:41They don't have the grip.
00:29:42Oh, they're changing pit strategy for the Ferrari, loading him up with fuel.
00:29:49With 49 laps to go.
00:29:54Well, he can't make it to one stop.
00:29:56I mean, he's still got to stop again because he didn't change the tire compound, so he's
00:30:00going to have to make at least one stop to put those soft tires on.
00:30:04I wonder if they're reckoning there's going to be another safety car because of that track.
00:30:08Pretty safe bet in Montreal.
00:30:12The race, by the way, is officially a sellout.
00:30:15Some 300,000 fans expected over the three-day weekend.
00:30:19Big crowd here today, not a seat to be had in great weather.
00:30:25Coming into the weekend, we were told there was a strong chance of thundershowers today.
00:30:29No, a little too thundery at the moment, except in the Hamilton camp.
00:30:33There'll be a lot of thunder there between dad and lad, I think, for one thing.
00:30:39Excuse me, son.
00:30:40Uh, did you see that red light?
00:30:43No, dad, I didn't.
00:30:48Right, like young drivers talking to their fathers everywhere.
00:30:50Don't you think I'd have stopped if I saw it?
00:30:54There is Hamilton.
00:30:58Not the way he wanted his second Canadian Grand Prix to end.
00:31:02We'll take a break and return with more live Formula 1 here on Fox.
00:31:18Welcome back live to the circuit Gillesville, New Haven, Montreal.
00:31:21Round seven of the 2008 Formula 1 season.
00:31:24I'm Bob Varsha with David Hobbs, Steve Matchett, and Peter Windsor with you here on Fox.
00:31:28We'll also be bringing you the next three rounds of the championship in France, Britain, and Germany on Fox.
00:31:35The balance of the season, back on speed.
00:31:37Hope you'll join us every step of the way.
00:31:40Now the order is Heidfeld, Barrichello, Nakajima, Weber, Coulthard, Trulli, Glock, Fisichella, and Vettel.
00:31:46Then the first of the cars who stopped, and Robert Kubica in the BMW Sauber is in a great position to bring that team its first victory.
00:31:54Behind him, the Renaults of Fernando Alonso and Nelson Piquet are in a great spot.
00:31:59And then Henke Kovalainen in the sole remaining McLaren Mercedes in the race.
00:32:10Watching Barrichello, Nakajima, Weber, and Coulthard.
00:32:13Here come the Toyotas of Trulli and Glock.
00:32:17Felipe Massa, we pointed out, pitted just as the track went green on the restart.
00:32:22They put a lot of fuel into the Ferrari.
00:32:25He is running last, but we'll have to see how far Felipe Massa goes on that big fuel load.
00:32:33Nick Heidfeld enjoying his moment in the sun at the moment, leading this race.
00:32:37Just done a very fast lap.
00:32:39Here's the two Toyotas duking it out side by side.
00:32:41Fisichella in the fourth India car.
00:32:43Oh, Vettel right behind him.
00:32:45Right behind him!
00:32:48Vettel, the youngest man in Formula 1, 21 years of age.
00:32:53A sensation when he came to the United States Grand Prix at Indianapolis as a 19-year-old
00:32:58and scored points sitting in for Robert Kubica and the BMW Sauber.
00:33:03He's been stuck behind Fisichella for most of this race.
00:33:06I was looking at the scoring earlier on.
00:33:07He's been stuck behind him and obviously just cannot get around him.
00:33:10But he consistently laps quicker.
00:33:12But of course, it just shows how difficult it is to overtake in these Formula 1 cars.
00:33:16Excuse me, I've made Sebastian older than he is.
00:33:19He's still 21.
00:33:20His birthday's coming up on July 3rd.
00:33:23He is 20 years old.
00:33:27From Zurich, Switzerland.
00:33:28Started from the pit lane in this race.
00:33:4819,000 RPM.
00:33:50Which of course is a rule.
00:33:52He can't rev more than 19,000.
00:33:53Otherwise, by now, they'd be up around the 22,000 mark, probably.
00:33:57Not bad for a 2.4-liter, normally aspirated V8 making about 900 horsepower.
00:34:04We're now serving lap 26.
00:34:06Again, those guys that haven't been into the pitch yet, haven't refueled.
00:34:10We must be getting into that window of the race where those guys are going to need to
00:34:13come in.
00:34:15We're now serving lap 26 again.
00:34:22Those guys that haven't been into the pitch yet, haven't refueled, we must be getting
00:34:26into that window of the race where those guys are going to need to come in.
00:34:35And that's basically...
00:34:36They have a pretty good lead.
00:34:37They've got like a 20 second lead over Kubica, who is the first of the guys who has stopped.
00:34:43He's nearly 21 seconds behind.
00:34:45He could just about hold that in a pit stop.
00:34:52Off the hairpin they come.
00:34:53We'll take another break.
00:34:55This is the Canadian Grand Prix on Fox.
00:35:01Back live in Montreal, Nick Heidfeld, pits from the race lead and you see the official
00:35:06notice that that collision at the end of the pit lane, Kimi Räikkönen, Nico Rosberg
00:35:12and Lewis Hamilton is being investigated.
00:35:15There may be penalties forthcoming, although I think it's safe to say the biggest penalty
00:35:19has already been administered.
00:35:20Räikkönen and Hamilton out of the race.
00:35:22Rosberg well delayed.
00:35:24Lot of fuel going into Heidfeld's car.
00:35:29Mark Webber also pits the Red Bull Renault from fourth.
00:35:31Now a lot of fuel into the car.
00:35:33Good to go.
00:35:34But...
00:35:35And here's his team, he's going to come out in front of Kubica.
00:35:40He just comes out in front of Kubica.
00:35:43Kubica in the sister BMW has already been into the pits once.
00:35:47Wow!
00:35:48Look how close that is, guys.
00:35:49Look at the timing from BMW in the pits.
00:35:52Absolutely superb.
00:35:54They just got enough fuel in to get the guy out in front of his teammate.
00:35:58For those of you who aren't familiar with Formula One on speed, you should know Steve
00:36:02Matchett speaks from his years of experience as a world championship winning mechanic.
00:36:07Robert Kubica will be absolutely spitting blood because he got held up behind Sebastian
00:36:12Vettel there for lap after lap.
00:36:14Meanwhile, Heidfeld, who chose not to stop in that first incident, pulled out a 27-second
00:36:19lead over him and came out in front.
00:36:21And Kubica is going to have it.
00:36:23The irony of it will be if Heidfeld wins this race and Kubica does not, he'll be absolutely
00:36:28fuming.
00:36:29Now, Kubica will have the chance, going deeper, to Hopscotch's teammate.
00:36:37Yeah, it's going to be interesting to see how that plays out.
00:36:40But it was fascinating.
00:36:41A little bit of pit strategy there.
00:36:43David, you were talking earlier on about the gap that these frontrunners had.
00:36:47Heidfeld, in this case, to Kubica, was about 20 seconds before he went to break.
00:36:52When Nick Heidfeld came into the pits, he had about 25 seconds, and it was just nip
00:36:57and tuck.
00:36:58And there he does.
00:37:00He goes through.
00:37:01And here comes Alonso.
00:37:03The two-time world champion can't quite get it done.
00:37:07I said Hopscotch.
00:37:08I meant leapfrog, of course, just to get my childish games correct.
00:37:13Now note this corner as Alonso flashes through in his pursuit of Nick Heidfeld.
00:37:19On board with Alonso.
00:37:20Now, I have to bear in mind at this stage of the race how important to the performance
00:37:28of the car the fuel load is, the weight of the fuel that they're carrying on board.
00:37:32Remember, the guys that have just come into the pits will be very heavy with fuel, and
00:37:37weight is everything to the performance of a race car.
00:37:40No more so than in Formula One, where about 20 pounds of fuel...
00:37:45Let's just listen to Alonso.
00:37:46Heidfeld to the end.
00:37:47Heidfeld is going to the end, Fernando.
00:37:50There it is, guys.
00:37:51And what that means, Heidfeld fuelled enough for the full race distance.
00:37:56But because he's carrying that fuel, his car will be significantly heavier, and therefore
00:38:01compromised on performance.
00:38:03Again, about 20 pounds of fuel in weight is about half a second, 0.4 to 0.5 of a second
00:38:09per lap performance deficit.
00:38:12Now moving to the race lead with Heidfeld's pit stop, the factory Honda, the much maligned
00:38:16Honda factory car of Rubens Barrichello, who leads the race, his first time in a Formula
00:38:22One Grand Prix lead since the 2005 United States Grand Prix.
00:38:26That's a span of 51 races.
00:38:29Oh, Kubica just scything along through traffic.
00:38:32Well, of course, don't forget Robert Kubica coming past here, a lot lighter than his teammate
00:38:37Heidfeld.
00:38:38And Heidfeld is going to be good to go to the end of the race, but of course, Robert
00:38:41Kubica is going to make another stop.
00:38:43So he now has to pull out a huge lead over his teammate if he wants to win this race.
00:38:48And I think there was no doubt in Nick Heidfeld's mind that Kubica was going to make that pass.
00:38:53Yeah.
00:38:56Wow, again.
00:38:57There's that dust.
00:38:58Yeah, it's a very, very heavy braking zone.
00:39:03Eighth, ninth and tenth on the track.
00:39:06Remember, World Championship points go only to the top eight finishers.
00:39:14Now, moments ago, Fernando Alonso's teammate, Nelson Piquet Jr., was the victim of a rookie
00:39:20mistake.
00:39:21Heavy braking for turn three and around she goes.
00:39:24Over the curb, does all sorts of damage to the underneath of the car, which, of course,
00:39:27is so crucial to their aerodynamic effectiveness.
00:39:31Now, watch what happens after traffic passes.
00:39:33He backs it up.
00:39:34Here comes Felipe Massa.
00:39:35Oh, boy.
00:39:36And Piquet was actually able to get that car off the wall and back to the pits.
00:39:42He currently runs 16th.
00:39:47Check that.
00:39:48He's only got one pit stop in hand thus far.
00:39:50He may not have gone to the pits.
00:39:53There's the St. Lawrence.
00:39:54I told you how close it is to the racetrack.
00:39:57Not much room on this man-made island, originally created for the Expo 67 World Fair.
00:40:03Of course, later, host to the 76 Summer Olympic Games.
00:40:09Only on Fox.
00:40:10Check your local listings.
00:40:12Back live at the Circuit Journal Villeneuve.
00:40:16Nick Frey looking on in the Honda pits.
00:40:18His man, Rubens Barrichello, right now is leading the Grand Prix.
00:40:23Right behind him, David Coulthard.
00:40:25So, the two senior drivers in Formula 1, in terms of age, are running 1-2.
00:40:3036 and 37 years of age, respectively.
00:40:32Boy, that was a good pass there.
00:40:34Felipe Massa put on Mark Webber there, going under the bridge there.
00:40:37You don't often see a lot of overtaking there.
00:40:39That was, of course, for P13.
00:40:41But, long way to go yet.
00:40:42I'm sure that Massa will end up in the points, even if he only gets, like, one or two.
00:40:46While we were in break, Kaz Nakajima and the Williams Toyota pitted from third place,
00:40:51having been passed by David Coulthard in the run down to the pit in.
00:40:54They could have fueled him to go the rest of the way
00:40:57and switch to the other tire compound that they must use in this race.
00:41:02They chose not to.
00:41:03He's now running 12th with another stop to come.
00:41:08Peter Windsor.
00:41:10Well, news from the Ferrari pit, Bob, is that Felipe Massa had to come in again
00:41:14because they didn't get all the fuel in in that first stop.
00:41:16That was a real disappointment for Felipe.
00:41:18But, as you say, driving very well now.
00:41:20We should look for him to be in the points come the end of the race.
00:41:23Massa up to 13th and the only Ferrari still in the race after Raikkonen
00:41:27was crashed into by Lewis Hamilton at pit out.
00:41:31I want to go back to something I said earlier about Formula 1 cars having 900 horsepower,
00:41:36about the same horsepower as you find in the average NASCAR sprint cup machine,
00:41:41if you're more familiar with stock cars than Formula 1.
00:41:43But, when you consider that these cars have about the same horsepower,
00:41:46but where a stock car weighs 3,400 pounds,
00:41:49a Formula 1 car weighs about 1,340 pounds.
00:41:54So, you can see the difference in power to weight ratio.
00:42:01Also, a lot more tire, a lot more highly refined aerodynamics in Formula 1.
00:42:06Here's Giancarlo Fisichella.
00:42:08Very close to the wall.
00:42:09He touched the wall.
00:42:10I would say that was more than close, Bob.
00:42:15Using the wall for steering and braking.
00:42:17It's the Mario Andretti white wall syndrome.
00:42:21Just takes the white letters off the tire.
00:42:26Here comes David Coulthard as Rubens Barrichello pits from the race lead in the Honda.
00:42:30Coulthard takes over in the Red Bull Renault.
00:42:35Classic Formula 1 pit stop.
00:42:3716 crewmen fall on the car.
00:42:40About eight and a half seconds of fuel.
00:42:42The soft compound tires on the car.
00:42:44Barrichello refueled and good to go.
00:42:46I think he's good to go for the full race distance at this point.
00:42:50Now, there's the guy we were talking about before.
00:42:52Massa in the Ferrari who had the technical failure in the pits earlier on.
00:42:57Each driver has their own fuel rig operated by the same mechanics.
00:43:02And I think just in the stress of doing that fast pit stop,
00:43:05together with Räikkönen, his teammate who came in ahead,
00:43:07didn't get the full fuel delivery into the car,
00:43:11which forced Massa to pit again on the next lap.
00:43:14Wow!
00:43:15The old tail coming out.
00:43:19That's where Nelson Piquet lost it earlier on.
00:43:24You're right, Bob.
00:43:25Talking about these cars, the Formula 1 cars and the aero-efficiency on the cars.
00:43:29Untold millions of dollars spent in development work on these Formula 1 cars
00:43:34to create the slippiest shape possible to the regulations.
00:43:38They have downforce on the car.
00:43:40David Coulthard coming in from P1.
00:43:43Downforce on the car.
00:43:44Way in excess of the weight of the car,
00:43:46which really forces the car down onto the track.
00:43:49But they do spend absolutely millions of dollars
00:43:52constantly refining Formula 1 car design.
00:43:56On go the options.
00:43:57Here's our fuel rig guys right here using the pressurized rig behind.
00:44:01Here's the spare rig for the other driver right here.
00:44:0412 litres a second.
00:44:06Again, about 3.4 gallons a second of fuel.
00:44:108.8 seconds is all he needed to get him the rest of the race distance.
00:44:13So DC should be good to go.
00:44:15Dave Coulthard.
00:44:20Sebastian Vettel also pits from 12th.
00:44:29On board now is Sebastian Vettel after his pit stop in the Toro Rosso with the Ferrari engine.
00:44:35I'll correct that. Vettel was 4th when he entered the pits.
00:44:38Now he's coming back.
00:44:39Coming across at dead last. One of the guys that starts in pit lane.
00:44:42Yeah.
00:44:44He may get back up there again.
00:44:46Another round of pit stops to come, remember.
00:44:49Now we're looking at a Toyota 1-2 on track.
00:44:52But remember both Jarno Trulli and Timo Glock in the Toyotas have yet to pit.
00:44:59Toyota spend probably as much or more than most of these teams on this racing,
00:45:03on Formula 1 racing.
00:45:04Hundreds of millions of dollars.
00:45:06Boy, they could do with a win in the worst possible.
00:45:08If only they could stop the race now.
00:45:10The guys back in Japan are saying,
00:45:12can we please stop this race now?
00:45:14Yeah, you're right. Hundreds of millions.
00:45:16I would say approximately 700-800 million dollars per season
00:45:20the top teams are pouring into Formula 1 development.
00:45:23Incredible amount of money.
00:45:25Incredible investment in this sport.
00:45:27It's a lot of money when you're not getting results as Toyota hasn't.
00:45:30It's a real mystery why one of the world's most successful racing manufacturers
00:45:34hasn't been able to cut it quite yet in Formula 1.
00:45:37We'll return to Formula 1 on Fox.
00:45:45Welcome back to the Ile Notre Dame in the circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, Canada.
00:45:49Round 7 of the 2008 Formula 1 season.
00:45:51You're watching it live on Fox with Peter Windsor, David Hobbs and Steve Matchett.
00:45:55I'm Bob Varsha.
00:45:56While we were away, Jarno Trulli pitted the race-leading Toyota
00:46:00and fell all the way down to 12th.
00:46:02Right now the race being led by his junior teammate, Timo Glock of Germany.
00:46:06And right behind him, Robert Kubica, who's already made one pit stop in his BMW Sauber.
00:46:12Yeah, Glock now the only guy that really needs to come into pit.
00:46:16And we've seen, as you rightly say, Bob, truly his teammate in the other Toyota TF108 chassis
00:46:21has been in to refuel.
00:46:22So Glock must do that very, very shortly,
00:46:25because he's going to be on the cusp of actually running out of fuel if he runs much deeper.
00:46:30So that will then give the lead back to Kubica.
00:46:34And that battle then will open up Kubica and Heidfeld in the two BMW chassis.
00:46:40Elsa Piquet Jr. has pitted his Renault and fallen to last on the field.
00:46:44On board with Fernando Alonso in the other Renault.
00:46:47And oh, he almost got into it.
00:46:53Those two had a coming together two weeks ago in Monaco
00:46:56in the hairpin turn there by the hotel.
00:47:00Started just about like that.
00:47:02Alonso didn't get on the brakes, dove underneath to try to avoid and ran into him.
00:47:06Oh, Piquet's race appears to be over.
00:47:11Well, Timo Glock went by yet again.
00:47:14I mean, he must be running on fumes by now.
00:47:17And Kubica must be fuming behind him because he's holding Kubica up badly.
00:47:21He's falling back into the clutches of his teammate, Nick Heidfeld,
00:47:24who, of course, is going to run to the end,
00:47:26whereas Robert Kubica is going to have to make a stop.
00:47:28And if he makes a stop and comes out, he'll be behind.
00:47:31He'll drop back down to about seventh.
00:47:38You see the gap differential.
00:47:40Kubica to teammate Heidfeld.
00:47:50Down to that turn ten where it is starting to break up.
00:47:53You can see it on the exit especially.
00:47:56But I am surprised, David, that the track has lasted as well as it has so far.
00:48:02We need to increase the gap to Nick.
00:48:10We need ten more laps. Big push.
00:48:15Open that gap for that all-important pit stop.
00:48:18This could be a big day for BMW Sauber.
00:48:20They have yet to win in Formula One.
00:48:23It's on their list for this year.
00:48:25Earlier, Peter Windsor spoke with Robert Kubica.
00:48:29And that all-important first win, when it might come, whether it might be here.
00:48:35Of course, the win is the goal, the target of the team for this year.
00:48:40This was set up the target before the season.
00:48:43But, of course, looking now, I think realistically we are not up to the pace to win.
00:48:50But the consistency is there.
00:48:52We don't have any technical problems in six races.
00:48:56We have done a good job.
00:49:00Yes, they have under Dr. Mario Tyson who heads up the project for BMW.
00:49:04They've been creeping up, the performance getting better and better.
00:49:09Pretty much the number three team in Formula One behind Ferrari and McLaren Mercedes in some order.
00:49:17Everybody's been expecting BMW Sauber to break through.
00:49:20The Sauber in BMW Sauber, of course, is team founder Peter Sauber,
00:49:24who sold a controlling interest in the team to BMW a couple of years ago.
00:49:30Now, with Kubica in first, his teammate Heidfeld in second.
00:49:34With Timo Glock diving for the pits on the previous lap.
00:49:36Fernando Alonso now up to third.
00:49:38And Renault can really use that.
00:49:40Here's the battle.
00:49:42Oil transfer, oil transfer.
00:49:43Brakes are okay for now.
00:49:45Oil transfer, guys, is the ability for the driver to transfer oil from an auxiliary tank on board
00:49:53and pump it into the engine.
00:49:55Formula One engines, like all road car engines, they all use oil.
00:49:59And as the oil level starts to drop...
00:50:01Oh, problems getting the fuel rig off the car.
00:50:03That's what we're highlighting there.
00:50:05Hey, dude, everybody's doing their best job possible.
00:50:07Don't do that to your team and put your hand up in frustration.
00:50:11Don't do that to your team and put your hand up in frustration.
00:50:14Everybody's working towards the same goal.
00:50:16Goal guy, get out there and drive the car.
00:50:18Getting back to that thing about the oil tank.
00:50:21You're not allowed to add oil to the car during a pit stop.
00:50:26Well, the way the teams get around that, because they are incredibly ingenious,
00:50:30they have an auxiliary oil tank on board.
00:50:34Oh, it's Alonso trying to get past BMW
00:50:37and just overshooting, out-braking himself round that Turn 10.
00:50:43Now Alonso trying to clean up the tyres, David,
00:50:46because of that rubbish down at Turn 10.
00:50:50If you are losing time with Alonso, let him by.
00:50:53If you are losing time, let him by.
00:50:59Why would he want to do that?
00:51:03Alonso's behind.
00:51:07I think they think that Alonso's got to stop again.
00:51:10In case he's just harrying him too much.
00:51:13Concentrating on his mirrors too much and not concentrating on the job in hand.
00:51:16When you're being followed very closely like this, under constant threat,
00:51:20you do have too much look in the mirror all the time,
00:51:23and it's very disconcerting. It does put you off and does actually slow you up.
00:51:28As opposed to, you'd think it would speed you up a bit because the guy's right there.
00:51:31Oh, he's lost it. Alonso lost it.
00:51:35Wow, just as the shot changed, we saw the back end fly around.
00:51:38That's going to bring out a safety car, surely.
00:51:41Squarely in the middle of the track.
00:51:44Well, let's double check he hasn't stalled it. No, he hasn't stalled it.
00:51:47The fire's still there.
00:51:49Well, come closer to the camera, to that open space, and get it turned around.
00:51:53The crew is on their feet, ready to go to work, if their man can get this car back.
00:51:58He's going backwards so he can see what's coming around that corner, I think.
00:52:01Or is he going to park it?
00:52:03It's over. I think it's over.
00:52:07So now it should be okay. We'll avoid the safety car.
00:52:10He managed to get the car. Thankfully, he didn't stall the car.
00:52:13These cars do have an anti-stall device programmed into the electronics,
00:52:18which should prevent that happening.
00:52:22Is it still going, mate?
00:52:24I think it's my gearbox.
00:52:28Broke the gearbox.
00:52:29Another little time-shifted radio call there from track,
00:52:32because you can see the drivers already climbing out of the car.
00:52:36There's the view in the mirrors of Robert Kubica,
00:52:38who no longer has to worry about whether Alonso is pushing him a little too hard.
00:52:43We'll be back. Formula One on Fox.
00:52:49Welcome back to live.
00:52:50Oh, front wing off as Kaz Nakajima brings the Williams Toyota to the pit lane and crashes.
00:52:57Well, here he is coming down to turn 10, the hairpin.
00:52:59Oh, this is what happened.
00:53:00Does he weaken it?
00:53:02Bang.
00:53:03Oh, on Button's Honda.
00:53:05Now, you'll see if we stay on board, we probably won't.
00:53:08Yeah, he gets trapped under the car.
00:53:10Here's the wing.
00:53:11He has no steering because the front wing is the end plate of the front wing,
00:53:14jammed underneath the suspension, so just no steering.
00:53:18Nothing he could do about that.
00:53:19It's just one of those awful incidents.
00:53:21Just push him straight back and he'll be out of the way.
00:53:27Oh, boy. Terrible shame.
00:53:28You see it there.
00:53:29Just falls under the left front corner of the car.
00:53:32And, well, it's all over at that point.
00:53:34Always at the worst possible moment.
00:53:36Oh, boy. It's just one of those unfortunate things.
00:53:38If you're going to lose your wing, you want it to just fly away off to the side of the track.
00:53:43Terrible, terrible luck.
00:53:44Boy, he was doing pretty well there.
00:53:45He was lying in eighth spot.
00:53:46Could have got himself a point.
00:53:48He becomes the sixth car out of the race, leaving 14 on track.
00:53:53Again, that was down into that turn 10, the tight hairpin.
00:53:55It's so easy to outbrake yourself,
00:53:57especially with the increasing buildup of rubbish down there.
00:54:01Now, on board with the race leader, Robert Kubica.
00:54:05You remember, he said to his pit,
00:54:07how many lap I got?
00:54:08And they said, 10.
00:54:09Push, push, push.
00:54:10Which is exactly what he's doing.
00:54:12Now, here are the BMW Sauer mechanics.
00:54:15Wow.
00:54:16What a position for these guys to be in.
00:54:18They are currently running one and two,
00:54:20and their drivers are racing each other.
00:54:22Now, remember, the mechanics of both cars
00:54:25come together to form one united pit crew.
00:54:28So you don't have that situation with two competing car crews together.
00:54:32The team is working together for a team result right now.
00:54:36And all the mechanics on the cars have to come together
00:54:39to get the best result.
00:54:44Here he comes, guys.
00:54:45Now, he only needs about five seconds of fuel.
00:54:48Remember, it's 12 litres a second,
00:54:51about three gallons a second.
00:54:54Have to come down to that legality speed limit.
00:54:58There's Mario Tyson, the team principal from BMW.
00:55:01For his first ever win, and BMW's first ever win,
00:55:05they need a calm, controlled pit stop.
00:55:08And by the way, these guys are recognized,
00:55:10BMW Sauer, as the best in the pit lane.
00:55:13Here comes Nick Heidfeld.
00:55:15Now, it's a long pit out here.
00:55:17Remember, you're on board with Nick Heidfeld.
00:55:19Nick Heidfeld.
00:55:20Heidfeld on board. Here we come.
00:55:22I think he's beating him out.
00:55:23He's got it, guys. He's got it.
00:55:26He's got it.
00:55:29And now it is a straight battle to the end of the race.
00:55:33What a moment for Robert Kubica.
00:55:36Recall, I mentioned earlier, a year ago at this racetrack,
00:55:39he suffered a massive accident.
00:55:41Here it is.
00:55:43Top of your screen, out from behind the big screen,
00:55:46off the track, hard into the wall, tumbling.
00:55:49We all held our breath. Look at that impact.
00:55:53An absolutely massive accident for Kubica on the BMW chassis,
00:55:57but a great testament to the strength of the car
00:56:00that it stood up so well.
00:56:01The survival cell, the monocoque that contains the driver,
00:56:05did an absolutely superb job.
00:56:07Robert Kubica, just a sprained ankle,
00:56:10the injuries he had in that accident.
00:56:12He missed one race and then back into the fray.
00:56:15But earlier on, Bob, you were talking about...
00:56:17Oh, let's listen to this radio.
00:56:20Position one. Position one.
00:56:24Bring it home.
00:56:27Please, BMW, I'm saying, please bring it home.
00:56:30Please bring it home, yeah.
00:56:31But you're right, guys.
00:56:32Bob, you were talking about BMW earlier on.
00:56:34We're having another look.
00:56:35This is a replay of what we've just seen
00:56:37with Nick Heidfeld on to the left.
00:56:40This track owes Robert Kubica a victory,
00:56:43with all due credit to Nick Heidfeld,
00:56:45who's been with the team a long time.
00:56:47In fact, before it was BMW Sauber,
00:56:50when it was just the Sauber team.
00:56:54On board with Felipe Massa.
00:56:56History awaits in Montreal,
00:56:58with 20 laps to go in the Canadian Grand Prix on Fox.
00:57:04By Chevrolet.
00:57:05Welcome back live to the circuit, Gilles Villeneuve,
00:57:07where Felipe Massa brought the crowd to its feet
00:57:10down in the hairpin moments ago.
00:57:12A big part of any Formula One crowd is Ferrari fans,
00:57:16the legendary Tufosi.
00:57:18Watch this.
00:57:19Kovalainen trying to get around Barranquillo,
00:57:21then into the picture comes Felipe Massa
00:57:23and slips around both of them.
00:57:25Crowd going absolutely berserk.
00:57:27And then, of course, there's the Ferrari fans,
00:57:29the legendary Tufosi.
00:57:31Kovalainen, unbelievable reaction from the crowd
00:57:34and from the pits.
00:57:35Kovalainen, another look at it here,
00:57:37as you see Massa diving down the inside.
00:57:39Kovalainen just couldn't get the traction down.
00:57:41The car's sliding.
00:57:43Massa's Ferrari chassis, and away.
00:57:46And the place went crazy.
00:57:51Two passes in one corner by a very daring driver.
00:57:55And no, it wasn't just the Ferrari fans.
00:57:57Two passes in one corner by a very daring driver.
00:58:00And no contact.
00:58:02Now, back to live pictures.
00:58:03This is Giancarlo Fisichella's Force India Ferrari.
00:58:07And that's how he got there.
00:58:14Oh, boy.
00:58:19And the Italian, who celebrated his 200th Formula One start
00:58:23two weeks ago in Monaco.
00:58:25That race didn't go terribly well either.
00:58:27Ferrari in the pit lane for Felipe Massa now.
00:58:30Boy, all that hard work, that terrific overtaking manoeuvre
00:58:33down in Turn 10.
00:58:35Here he comes.
00:58:36Here comes Massa.
00:58:40Kovalainen, Button, Weber all pit behind him.
00:58:43Now, guys, I'm going to say that all these guys are pitting early.
00:58:46Think back to what we were saying about Lewis Hamilton
00:58:48when he just missed out on that safety car period.
00:58:51You saw the world feed just show a shot of the safety car.
00:58:54Maybe because of Fisichella's accident,
00:58:56they were contemplating bringing it out.
00:58:58There has not been a safety car period announced.
00:59:00We have no graphic, which we would see at the top.
00:59:03But I'm sure, thinking back to Hamilton's problems,
00:59:06I'm sure that was a team's reaction saying,
00:59:09get in now before that safety car's pulled out
00:59:11if they're going to do it.
00:59:13Boy, credit to these corner workers,
00:59:15who come from the United States, Canada, Britain and elsewhere.
00:59:18Is that a dangerous situation for a car? Confirmed.
00:59:25Couldn't quite make out Rosberg's response,
00:59:28or what he wanted to know.
00:59:30I think they wanted to think
00:59:32they might want to pull the safety car out,
00:59:34but that train seems to have done the job perfectly well.
00:59:42These are hard-working track workers.
00:59:44Another look at Fisichella.
00:59:46Fisichella, I remember, a little earlier in the race,
00:59:49we saw tapping both the wheels against the side there.
00:59:53He's not having a good day with the handling.
00:59:55Well, it's all over right there.
00:59:58But these cars, I mean,
01:00:00they're absolutely on a knife edge of adhesion at all times.
01:00:03They look so smooth and controlled
01:00:05when the driver and the chassis are working in harmony,
01:00:08but there's such performance from these cars.
01:00:10Bob, you had it right earlier on
01:00:12when you were talking about the horsepower,
01:00:14the weight ratio of the car, the downforce
01:00:16and the slipstream effect of the cars.
01:00:18They're absolutely balanced on a knife edge all the time.
01:00:21Here's the battle for fourth.
01:00:23Barrichello and Glock,
01:00:25two drivers who desperately need some championship points.
01:00:28And thinking of points,
01:00:30with what we've seen thus far in this Canadian Grand Prix,
01:00:33the leaderboards in the World Championships
01:00:35for drivers and constructors are going to be rearranged.
01:00:38Right now, BMW's in position
01:00:40to jump back into second in the Constructors' Championship.
01:00:43They lost that position to McLaren-Mercedes two weeks ago.
01:00:46And Robert Kubica,
01:00:48if he can pull off his first career victory,
01:00:50will jump to the head of the drivers' table.
01:00:52The first time ever a BMW Sauber driver has done that,
01:00:55and certainly the first time ever
01:00:57for a Formula One driver from Poland.
01:01:00Of course, there's only been one of those,
01:01:02and you're watching him here today.
01:01:06There have been lots in Scotland,
01:01:08and here's one on David Coulthard.
01:01:11Currently third.
01:01:12I mean, he has had an outstanding race.
01:01:14He started off back in 13th spot.
01:01:17Not what we expected at all from David Coulthard.
01:01:20The running order and the pit stop record
01:01:22across the bottom of your screen.
01:01:24We'll be back in a moment to Montreal on Fox.
01:01:31Welcome back live to beautiful Montreal
01:01:33and the Canadian Formula One Grand Prix
01:01:35live here on Fox with Peter Windsor,
01:01:37Steve Matchett, and David Hobbs.
01:01:39I'm Bob Barsha.
01:01:40You're watching David Coulthard,
01:01:42who has parlayed a one-stop strategy
01:01:44in his Red Bull Renault
01:01:45into a potential podium finish in today's race.
01:01:48A great drive for the senior driver
01:01:51in Formula One at age 37.
01:01:54His teammate, Mark Webber, down there in 8th.
01:01:56Good enough for one point so far,
01:01:58but not how he hoped the day would work out at all.
01:02:01He qualified well in front of David Coulthard,
01:02:03but I think all that chaos in pit lane
01:02:05when Hamilton ran into the back of Kimi Räikkönen
01:02:08held him up badly.
01:02:09Jeff Willis, Christian Horner,
01:02:11and the rest of the Red Bull Renault brain trust
01:02:13on the pit wall.
01:02:14On board with Nico Rosberg.
01:02:17Currently 9th.
01:02:18One spot out of the points.
01:02:3313 laps to go.
01:02:3412 the next time race leader Robert Kubica
01:02:36flashes under the flag stand.
01:02:40David Coulthard is one year older
01:02:42than seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher
01:02:44was when he retired.
01:02:46Yet DC insists that he would like to keep driving
01:02:49in Formula One.
01:02:50He saves the car there from an awkward moment.
01:02:52Well, he got into that gravel.
01:02:53It's all rolling up there big time now
01:02:55on the outside of these turns.
01:03:01Tires appear to be in pretty good shape.
01:03:03Well, you see the white stripe on his left front tire
01:03:06is starting to disappear,
01:03:08wearing the tread down quite a bit
01:03:10on this softer compound.
01:03:13Hot day.
01:03:14It's been a decade that Formula One cars
01:03:16have been using that grooved dry weather tire.
01:03:19Next year, we will go back to slick tires.
01:03:22No grooves.
01:03:23No painted stripes.
01:03:25We're on board with Robert Kubica
01:03:27underneath that bridge.
01:03:31Now that dash down towards the hairpin
01:03:33where he crashed a year ago.
01:03:36Hit the wall right there.
01:03:39So these guys have been taking care here
01:03:42to steer clear of all that rolled up gravel
01:03:44and rubber and stuff
01:03:45and keep himself out of trouble.
01:03:47They have been so conservative in their expectations
01:03:50as they've developed the car,
01:03:52saying, we want to get in the points,
01:03:53we want to finish,
01:03:54we want to have a pole,
01:03:55and they've achieved that.
01:03:56And then they said this year,
01:03:58well, a win is on the cards.
01:04:00We'll be back to Montreal live here on Fox.
01:04:09Back live along the mighty St. Lawrence River,
01:04:11across from downtown Montreal
01:04:13on the Ile Notre Dame.
01:04:15Circuit Gilles Villeneuve,
01:04:16place host for the 30th year
01:04:18to a Formula One Grand Prix.
01:04:20Here's a view of Nico Rosberg
01:04:21trying Sebastian Vettel
01:04:23on the outside in the final chicane
01:04:25for eighth and the final championship point.
01:04:28Note, Rosberg balked and gave up ninth place
01:04:32to the oncoming McLaren Mercedes
01:04:34of Heike Kovalainen.
01:04:38Nico Rosberg has to try to recoup.
01:04:40He was going for one place.
01:04:41Instead, he lost one.
01:04:43Boy, I'm not quite sure why...
01:04:44Oh!
01:04:46Well, that makes Rosberg's job easier.
01:04:50Yeah.
01:04:51All slippy and sliding on the gravel.
01:04:54Yeah.
01:04:55This could be an interesting final nine laps.
01:04:58Yeah, you're absolutely right, Bob.
01:04:59It could.
01:05:00Massa just blows by Rubens Barrichello
01:05:03for sixth place.
01:05:08Wow!
01:05:09Oh, that was...
01:05:11The old Wall of Champions.
01:05:12There you go, another kiss there.
01:05:14You're talking about this marble build-up offline.
01:05:17There it is.
01:05:18Look at the foreground there of that shot.
01:05:20As each lap goes by,
01:05:21there's more and more gravel
01:05:23that gets pushed off the side of the road,
01:05:25out of the tarmac,
01:05:26and, of course,
01:05:27marbles rolling off from the tyres.
01:05:29There's Massa making the move.
01:05:32Two Brazilian drivers.
01:05:36And the more build-up there is
01:05:37of rubber and gravel.
01:05:38Look at that there around the front of the shot.
01:05:40A huge amount of marbles and gravel build-up.
01:05:43The racing line gets narrower and narrower
01:05:46as each lap ticks by.
01:05:49I tell you, once you get in that stuff,
01:05:50I mean, you're doomed.
01:05:51I mean, there is no grip at all.
01:05:53No, it's over, isn't it?
01:05:54It's not even like there's a bit of grip.
01:05:57It's like when you get too far off here on the left.
01:06:00Whoa!
01:06:08Jarno Trulli trying to hang on to that fifth spot
01:06:10from Felipe Massa.
01:06:11As you can see off that graphic,
01:06:13Massa pulling it, oh, enormously.
01:06:18While we're on board the Toyota,
01:06:19it's worth recalling our Toyota storylines
01:06:21at the start of the race.
01:06:22Would the track be a factor in the race?
01:06:24Well, it turns out, not really.
01:06:26How about the safety car periods?
01:06:28Most definitely,
01:06:29as that one safety car scrambled the order.
01:06:32Jarno Trulli,
01:06:33Definitely, as that one safety car scrambled the order.
01:06:36Jarno Massa, five seconds behind now.
01:06:39He overtook Barrichello.
01:06:45I am struggling a lot with the brakes.
01:06:53Oh, you do not want to struggle
01:06:55with your brakes in Montreal.
01:06:56No, and as we're saying at the top of the show,
01:06:58it is a very hard braking track around here.
01:07:01You get a lot of heat built into these brakes.
01:07:04And, of course, that includes, I think,
01:07:06you have a lot of wear in the brakes.
01:07:08It really does affect the performance of the cars
01:07:11towards the end.
01:07:12They're on, I say, a knife edge of adhesion.
01:07:14They're on a knife edge of reliability, too.
01:07:16You want to join us for the French Grand Prix.
01:07:18Practice and qualifying on speed as normal.
01:07:21We have a race on Sunday on Fox.
01:07:23Getting back to our Toyota storylines,
01:07:25that safety car that came out just at the right moment
01:07:28to benefit one-stop cars,
01:07:30like David Coulthard right there.
01:07:32Allowing him to consolidate track position.
01:07:34Coulthard in position for a podium,
01:07:36which would be his first points of the year.
01:07:39And we also said to keep an eye on that front row
01:07:42of Lewis Hamilton,
01:07:43who dominated the race easily from the start.
01:07:55And alongside Lewis Hamilton
01:07:57was equally young 23-year-old Robert Kubica,
01:08:00who was in position to pick up his first race victory.
01:08:04Now, that's Rubens Barrichello up ahead on the road.
01:08:06Sebastian Vettel in the Scuderia Toro Rosso Ferrari.
01:08:09And don't forget that Sebastian Vettel
01:08:11started in the pit lane after that nasty crash on Friday.
01:08:15He never got into qualifying.
01:08:17Started in the pit lane.
01:08:19Now duking it out for a couple of points.
01:08:21And this continues a tradition in Canada.
01:08:24The races are crazy.
01:08:26We see lots of safety cars.
01:08:28And we have also seen the man who started
01:08:30at the back of the field score points.
01:08:33That's unheard of in Formula 1.
01:08:34But it's happened in Canada
01:08:36for three straight years coming into this year.
01:08:39We can make it four now.
01:08:45Welcome back to Montreal.
01:08:46Five laps remaining in the Canadian Formula 1 Grand Prix.
01:08:50You're riding with Heikki Kovalainen.
01:08:52Up ahead on the road, Sebastian Vettel.
01:08:54In front of him, Rubens Barrichello.
01:08:57And it's tempting to say that Barrichello
01:08:59is as old as the combined ages of the two men behind him.
01:09:02But that's not quite true.
01:09:04But when Sebastian Vettel was born
01:09:06almost 21 years ago next month,
01:09:08Rubens Barrichello was a superstar in go-karts
01:09:11in his native Brazil and a sophomore in high school.
01:09:19This is 7th, 8th, and 9th.
01:09:22And points go down to 8.
01:09:23So it's absolutely critical for Vettel
01:09:25to keep Kovalainen back.
01:09:27And obviously better still for Vettel
01:09:29to get around Barrichello.
01:09:30Kovalainen, the only remaining McLaren Mercedes in the race,
01:09:33needs to exercise some damage control here.
01:09:36His teammate Lewis Hamilton is out from the race lead.
01:09:40Careful, careful, boys.
01:09:42McLaren obviously very anxious for Kovalainen
01:09:44to score massive points here
01:09:45because they're going to lose out big time
01:09:47to BMW in the Constructors' Championship.
01:09:50There's David Coulthard all alone in 3rd place.
01:09:54Nick Heidfeld 6 seconds ahead.
01:09:56Timo Glock and the Toyota 17.5 seconds behind.
01:10:00The crews have done their work.
01:10:02It's all in the hands of the drivers now.
01:10:05Massa all over Jarno Trulli's Toyota for 5th.
01:10:09Here's Kovalainen going to drive Vettel.
01:10:11Oh, oh, oh, it's good.
01:10:13Wow!
01:10:14Oh, and he's going to blow the corner.
01:10:16Well, he saved it.
01:10:17I was going to say, this could end in tears,
01:10:19but they both kept their heads.
01:10:20Yeah.
01:10:21I don't know why Kovalainen keeps trying
01:10:23the young man down the outside in Turn 1.
01:10:27You've got to watch Kovalainen here.
01:10:29There's that heavy braking zone
01:10:31as you go underneath that bridge.
01:10:33The last chicane as they fly down towards the hairpin.
01:10:38You've got to be very close on the car in front
01:10:40to be able to make it move.
01:10:42Kovalainen's dropping back a little now.
01:10:43Yeah, you see, this is unfortunate.
01:10:45Kovalainen's not too quick through this sector here.
01:10:47And then when he comes down to...
01:10:49He picks up a little bit of space here,
01:10:50but he's not as quick through that Turn 10,
01:10:52that last hairpin, as you'd expect him to be.
01:10:54Yeah.
01:10:55Because his quicker car in the straight line
01:10:57should be able to pick him off
01:10:58going into that last chicane,
01:10:59but can't quite manage it.
01:11:01Now we're down into Turn 10 from the rear view.
01:11:03This is where he needs to pick up time, right there.
01:11:10Oh!
01:11:11Now, wait a minute.
01:11:12Oh!
01:11:13That's cutting the chicane
01:11:14and gaining competitive advantage, one might argue.
01:11:18And if so, perhaps Sebastian Vettel
01:11:20will be required to hand over the position.
01:11:24Yeah, you're right.
01:11:25I suppose if he'd passed him there,
01:11:27would he be required...
01:11:30Whoa!
01:11:31The two Toyotas now under attack
01:11:33from the solo Ferrari of Felipe Massa.
01:11:36Massa got by Jarno Trulli,
01:11:38who was blocked by his teammate, Timo Glock.
01:11:44Oh!
01:11:47Massa will say,
01:11:49Now I'll take the younger man, if I can.
01:11:51There's some frantic action, guys,
01:11:52in these closing three laps.
01:11:54There's a lot of pride at stake here,
01:11:56both from Drivers' Championship
01:11:57and Constructors' Championship.
01:11:59And, of course, this is the great Ferrari house
01:12:02battling it out with Toyota.
01:12:06And, of course, so vital Ferrari,
01:12:08who are leading the Constructors' Championship
01:12:09at the moment by quite a long way from McLaren,
01:12:12who will pick up very few points at the moment.
01:12:15But, obviously, BMW are going to pick up
01:12:17a lot of points here.
01:12:18Well, if they finish in this order, David,
01:12:20BMW will leapfrog McLaren
01:12:22to take over second spot
01:12:23in the Constructors' Championship.
01:12:25And if Massa completes that pass,
01:12:27he will leapfrog his teammate, Kimi Räikkönen,
01:12:30the reigning world champion
01:12:31in the Drivers' standings.
01:12:32And that's huge.
01:12:33Oh, Glock!
01:12:34Oh, Glock comes right on track.
01:12:36This is in replay.
01:12:38I knew he had balked, Trulli,
01:12:39but I didn't know it was quite that egregious.
01:12:41Oh, boy, oh, boy.
01:12:42Glock made a terrible mistake here
01:12:43and blocked his own teammate.
01:12:45Trulli will be furious with his teammate.
01:12:47Wow!
01:12:48And rightfully so.
01:12:49And Massa, of course,
01:12:50just grabbed the moment while it was off of him.
01:12:55Should love to be a fly on the wall
01:12:56in the Toyota Motorhome after this one.
01:12:58Yeah.
01:13:02But, remember, Trulli complained
01:13:03he was fighting the brakes, too.
01:13:06Up at the top of the screen
01:13:07in that white box in a moment,
01:13:08it'll tick over to one lap remaining
01:13:10for race leader Robert Kubica.
01:13:13It was about 45 seconds ahead of this battle.
01:13:16And there it is.
01:13:17There it is, guys.
01:13:18You're right.
01:13:19Well, we're watching this battle,
01:13:21and it's very exciting.
01:13:22I've got to tell you,
01:13:23I'm absolutely thrilled
01:13:24with what's happening up the front here.
01:13:26BMW have just done such a stellar job.
01:13:29Absolutely fantastic.
01:13:30They've been so conservative,
01:13:32but so good at developing the car.
01:13:34What's happened?
01:13:35Is that Coulthard?
01:13:36Or is that Webber?
01:13:37That's Webber.
01:13:38Webber.
01:13:39Was it tire smoke?
01:13:40I think that was tire smoke.
01:13:41He must have had a spin,
01:13:42and that was a restop.
01:13:45Yeah.
01:13:46Tough day for the Australian.
01:13:47Oh, wow.
01:13:51Meanwhile, up front,
01:13:52we've had seven different race leaders today.
01:13:54Hamilton, Heidfeld, Barrichello,
01:13:56Coulthard, Trulli, Gluck, and Kubica
01:13:58has just won short
01:13:59of the all-time Formula One record
01:14:01for a single race
01:14:02set in the slipstreaming wars
01:14:04of the Italian Grand Prix at Monza
01:14:06back in 1971.
01:14:09And here's your man
01:14:10in the BMW chassis.
01:14:11So now we're really asking the resurgence,
01:14:14a new power with Ferrari, McLaren,
01:14:16and now BMW coming to the fore.
01:14:19Back in 1982, here in Montreal,
01:14:21BMW took their first Formula One victory
01:14:24as an engine supplier
01:14:26when Nelson Piquet won driving a Brabham.
01:14:29Today, they will pick up
01:14:30their first-ever victory as a constructor
01:14:33and the first for Robert Kubica,
01:14:36the rightful winner
01:14:37of the Canadian Grand Prix.
01:14:39Fantastic.
01:14:40Fantastic result.
01:14:42Well done, boys.
01:14:43Well done.
01:14:45Well, that Robert Kubica
01:14:46burst on the scene in 2006
01:14:48at the Hungarian Grand Prix
01:14:50and was immediately
01:14:52right on the pace
01:14:54and has been giving Nick Heidfeld
01:14:55fits ever since.
01:14:56Last year, he had a bit of a slump,
01:14:58didn't apparently get on very well
01:14:59with his engineer,
01:15:00but boy, this year,
01:15:01he has been strong
01:15:02absolutely everywhere.
01:15:04And I'm sure there are
01:15:05BMW car club members
01:15:07all across the country
01:15:08who are going to run out the driveway
01:15:09and tootle the horn on their bimmers.
01:15:13Timo Glock picks up a career best
01:15:15in his rookie season
01:15:16that began with a huge crash
01:15:18in Melbourne, Australia.
01:15:20Felipe Massa brings Ferrari home
01:15:22unofficially in fifth
01:15:24and Jarno Trulli, sixth,
01:15:26ahead of Rubens Barrichello
01:15:27and Sebastian Vettel.
01:15:28Let's listen in.
01:15:30Robert, bravo.
01:15:32Bravissimo.
01:15:33Bravissimo.
01:15:34That's a historical win, Robert.
01:15:36You are leading the championship now.
01:15:41Thank you, guys. Thank you.
01:15:46Ever the man of few words,
01:15:48Robert Kubica
01:15:51raises BMW
01:15:55to its greatest heights ever
01:15:56in Formula One.
01:15:58Arguably their greatest heights ever
01:16:00in worldwide motorsport.
01:16:02Winners of the Canadian Grand Prix
01:16:04will take a break
01:16:05and return to Montreal
01:16:07as the Polish flags wave
01:16:08in the grandstand.
01:16:12The FIA Formula One
01:16:13World Championship on Fox
01:16:15is brought to you by BMW,
01:16:17the ultimate driving machine.
01:16:23Back in Montreal,
01:16:24we don't have a victory lane
01:16:26in Formula One.
01:16:27We have what's called
01:16:28the Parc Fermé,
01:16:29where the top three finishing cars
01:16:31pull in,
01:16:32their drivers climb out
01:16:34for the post-race weight checks
01:16:37and then the podium ceremonies.
01:16:39And this is a moment
01:16:40that this 23-year-old Polish driver
01:16:42by the name of Robert Kubica
01:16:44will remember for the rest of his life.
01:16:48Dr. Mario Tyson, the team principal,
01:16:50congratulates his astonishing young driver.
01:16:53He goes over to congratulate his teammate,
01:16:56Nick Heidfeld,
01:16:57for the big boost today.
01:16:58What a team result.
01:16:59I mean, absolutely outstanding.
01:17:01Incredible.
01:17:02Absolutely incredible.
01:17:06There it is.
01:17:07You can see BMW now,
01:17:0870 points in second place,
01:17:10just behind Ferrari.
01:17:13Oh, wow.
01:17:14That is really very close.
01:17:15Here's Davy Coulthard.
01:17:16Yeah, he's running down the pit lane.
01:17:18Coulthard, you like him,
01:17:19shouldn't be running like that.
01:17:20Give yourself a heart attack.
01:17:22Running in the pit lane
01:17:23but walking on a cloud.
01:17:24That was a huge performance
01:17:26that he's been telling everyone who will listen
01:17:28he is still capable of.
01:17:29Here are the final results
01:17:31presented by Bridgestone.
01:17:32Oh, there you see it.
01:17:33The two BMWs,
01:17:34Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld,
01:17:35first and second.
01:17:36Davy Coulthard,
01:17:37a wonderful result for third.
01:17:39Timo Glock at the first,
01:17:40the Toyotas.
01:17:41Felipe Massa,
01:17:4240's way back to the field,
01:17:43to fifth.
01:17:44Jarno Trulli,
01:17:45another good result for Toyota.
01:17:46Both of Rubens Barrichello,
01:17:47a wonderful result for him.
01:17:48And of course,
01:17:49Sebastian Vettel,
01:17:50the youngest driver in the field,
01:17:51eighth.
01:17:52These guys,
01:17:53nine through to 14,
01:17:54all out of the points.
01:17:55They're down to eighth,
01:17:56but nevertheless,
01:17:57some terrific racing.
01:17:58Kovalainen and Rosberg there,
01:17:59Fizzi Keller there,
01:18:00Kaz Nakajima,
01:18:01Fernando Alonso,
01:18:02Ferrano,
01:18:03his mate right behind him,
01:18:04Piquet,
01:18:05Lewis Hamilton,
01:18:06Adrian Sutil,
01:18:07P20.
01:18:08Seven rounds of the championship
01:18:09are now complete.
01:18:10Here are the drivers' standings.
01:18:11Oh, wow,
01:18:12just look at that.
01:18:13Kubica at 42,
01:18:14then Hamilton and Massa on 38.
01:18:16Räikkönen still on 35.
01:18:17Nick Heidfeld jumps to 28.
01:18:19Kovalainen didn't pick up anything today,
01:18:21nor did Mark Webber.
01:18:22Jarno Trulli did,
01:18:23Alonso did not.
01:18:24Niko Rosberg did not.
01:18:26Kaz Nakajima did not.
01:18:27David Coulthard did pick up.
01:18:29Vettel picked up one,
01:18:30and Barrichello picked up a couple,
01:18:32as did Timo Glock.
01:18:34How about the constructors, Steve?
01:18:35Wow, well, this result has blown it wide open.
01:18:38Ferrari out there in the lead with 73,
01:18:40but just three points behind BMW Sauber.
01:18:43McLaren Mercedes in third spot with 53.
01:18:46Behind them in fourth spot,
01:18:47Red Bull Renault 21.
01:18:49Toyota,
01:18:50Williams Toyota behind them in sixth spot,
01:18:52and just two teams yet to score.
01:18:54Unfortunately,
01:18:55Subaru Cori Honda won't score there
01:18:56out of the championship.
01:18:59Well, it's a day that Robert Kubica
01:19:00will remember forever,
01:19:01but everybody will be talking about
01:19:03the pit lane gaffe that took
01:19:05the reigning world champion
01:19:06and his presumptive successor
01:19:08out of this race.
01:19:13Back in Montreal,
01:19:14Nick Heidfeld takes a final sip of water
01:19:17and then heads for the podium.
01:19:19There is race winner Robert Kubica,
01:19:21and in a moment,
01:19:22for the first time in history,
01:19:23the Polish national anthem
01:19:25will play from a Formula One podium.
01:20:51Polish anthem for Robert Kubica,
01:21:13the German anthem for BMW.
01:21:15The winning constructors.
01:21:18A long way from Krakow.
01:21:21As a young man,
01:21:22Robert Kubica moved from his native Poland
01:21:25where there wasn't the sort of motorsport
01:21:27that he felt would take him
01:21:28to the top of the world.
01:21:30He moved to Italy,
01:21:31fluent in Italian after living there
01:21:33for many years.
01:21:34Now he proudly displays the red and white
01:21:37of the Polish national banner
01:21:39as he stands atop a Formula One podium.
01:21:42Congratulations to Dr. Mario Tyson.
01:21:46He has done an outstanding job at BMW.
01:21:48I mean, he's been working on this.
01:21:50I had dinner with him,
01:21:51what, six years ago at the US Grand Prix
01:21:54with him and Rick Hendrick,
01:21:55and right then and then,
01:21:57you just knew this guy
01:21:58was going to win some events.
01:22:00I think there are a few tears
01:22:01down there in the pit lane
01:22:02among the BMW Sauber faithful,
01:22:04and there is David Coulthard.
01:22:06A lot of validation
01:22:08for the senior driver in Formula One
01:22:10with championship points today in Canada.
01:22:13He says it's a very different sport
01:22:14than it was when he came in in 1994.
01:22:17We'll hear from the winner in a moment.
01:22:21The FIA Formula One World Championship on Fox
01:22:24is brought to you by Edelbrock,
01:22:26the most respected name in performance,
01:22:28and by Royal Purple.
01:22:30Visit royalpurple.com to find a dealer near you.
01:22:37Welcome back.
01:22:38The circuit here in Montreal
01:22:40has been turned back over
01:22:42to the spectators,
01:22:43and you see a lot of red.
01:22:44Normally, that would be Ferrari red.
01:22:46I think a lot of it today is Polish red
01:22:49for race winner Robert Kubica.
01:22:52Absolutely.
01:22:53And BMW, even in North America,
01:22:56the North American branch
01:22:57have been so supportive.
01:22:58Here's Peter Windsor in the interview room.
01:23:00Canadian Grand Prix,
01:23:01third for Red Bull Racing,
01:23:02David Coulthard,
01:23:03second for the BMW Sauber team,
01:23:05Nick Heidfeld,
01:23:06and heading a one-two for the BMW Sauber team
01:23:09and taking the lead in the World Championship
01:23:10with his first-ever Grand Prix win from Poland,
01:23:13Robert Kubica.
01:23:14Robert, that must sound great to you,
01:23:17but let's just go back to the pit lane.
01:23:18There you were after your first pit stop
01:23:20alongside Kimi,
01:23:21waiting for the red light,
01:23:22and suddenly, I guess you were aware
01:23:24of what happened to Kimi and Lewis Hamilton.
01:23:26Yeah, we were pitting everybody together
01:23:29in the same lap behind the safety car,
01:23:31and the red light was still on
01:23:33in the exit of the pit lane,
01:23:34similar to last year when I stopped.
01:23:37Kimi stopped side-by-side to me,
01:23:40and I just heard a big shunt,
01:23:42and I saw Kimi's car moving,
01:23:45and I realised it was Lewis.
01:23:47So then I just kept concentrating
01:23:49to wait for the green light,
01:23:51and managed to pull away well.
01:23:54Then I was stuck behind slower cars,
01:23:58couldn't make an overtake manoeuvre,
01:24:01and the last car that went in
01:24:05for the first pit was Glock.
01:24:08And then I had, I think,
01:24:09eight laps to make, I think,
01:24:11a 16 or 17-second margin
01:24:13to come back after my pit stop
01:24:15in front of Nick.
01:24:16And yeah, this was my seven laps
01:24:19of qualifying.
01:24:21I never struggled so much.
01:24:23I was pushing very hard.
01:24:24I knew that I had to make
01:24:26around a 21-second gap,
01:24:27and I managed to do 24,
01:24:29so it was a really great race.
01:24:31It was indeed a great race.
01:24:32What were the track conditions like
01:24:34in that second half of the race
01:24:35when you were pushing so hard?
01:24:36And indeed, how difficult was it
01:24:38to maintain your patience
01:24:39when you were in that traffic?
01:24:41Well, it was not easy.
01:24:42You know, it's always chaotic
01:24:43when the safety car is coming in,
01:24:45and I was a bit unlucky
01:24:47because I missed three seconds.
01:24:50I would come in,
01:24:51the pit lane would be still open,
01:24:52but when I was approaching
01:24:54the pit lane entry,
01:24:56the yellow lights started flashing,
01:24:59and so I couldn't go into pit lane.
01:25:02So I was a bit unlucky,
01:25:04but then I was struggling
01:25:06behind slow cars
01:25:07with Alonso being behind me,
01:25:09trying to overtake,
01:25:10and also the drivers were fighting,
01:25:12so I was losing a lot of lap time
01:25:14to the leaders,
01:25:16but finally I managed
01:25:17to make a good gap,
01:25:19and the last laps
01:25:20were very, very difficult.
01:25:22I mean, I was not pushing.
01:25:24The team was saying,
01:25:25stay calm, don't push too much,
01:25:27and I was not pushing already
01:25:29for 10, 15 laps,
01:25:30but it was just amazing.
01:25:31As soon as you go offline,
01:25:33you have tarmac destroyed,
01:25:35and it was like on the sand,
01:25:37so it was very, very difficult.
01:25:39Could I ask you now
01:25:40just to describe your emotions?
01:25:42Well, at this point, we'll jump in.
01:25:44A great moment for Robert Kubica,
01:25:45who came into the day
01:25:47knowing that the possibility was there
01:25:49that he could take over
01:25:50the world championship lead
01:25:51without a victory,
01:25:52but that certainly
01:25:53would be nothing compared
01:25:54to what he has been able to do today,
01:25:56win his first ever Formula One race.
01:25:59Final thoughts, David Hobbs?
01:26:00Well, it was an absolutely
01:26:01outstanding race,
01:26:02and I just cannot believe
01:26:03the mistake that Lewis Hamilton made,
01:26:05but it's a pretty big
01:26:06red light flashing there.
01:26:07How about you, Steve, quickly?
01:26:09Fantastic result.
01:26:10It encapsulates to me
01:26:11what Formula One is all about,
01:26:12a new team coming to the fore.
01:26:14And that'll wrap things up
01:26:16from the Canadian Grand Prix
01:26:17in Montreal.
01:26:18The Formula One teams
01:26:19will pack up,
01:26:20fly home to Europe,
01:26:21and head for France.
