00:00:07Monaco is history, a race that was first held in 1929 and has seen every step in the evolution of the Formula One car,

00:00:15and served as a stage for the best work of four-time winner Graham Hill and the incomparable six-time winner Ayrton Senna.

00:00:23Monaco is wealth, money you see in the sleek yachts, the ornate Baroque architecture,

00:00:29the way people dress, and money you don't see, billions sheltered by Monaco's tax laws for its residents,

00:00:36which include almost a third of today's Formula One drivers.

00:00:40Monaco is violence, the violence of too much speed in too little space, of cars confined by walls of steel,

00:00:48the violence of men forcing their way by other men where no room exists,

00:00:53through a tunnel, around a swimming pool, past a casino, in just over 70 seconds.

00:00:59It's about desperation, trapped behind another car, the laps clicking by,

00:01:04knowing the only move you can think of will probably wreck you both.

00:01:09There's money everywhere in Monaco, but right now you face a poverty of choices,

00:01:14unless, unless this day is destined to be yours.

00:01:19The rock, the sea, the race, the 66th running of the Grand Prix of Monaco is next.

00:01:39Less than three-quarters of a square mile in area, but with perhaps the world's highest measure of per capita glitz and glamour,

00:01:46welcome to the key event on the Formula One schedule in this or any other year,

00:01:50the Grand Prix of Monaco, live on Speed.

00:01:54Hello again, everyone, I'm Bob Barsha with David Hobbs, Steve Matchett and Peter Windsor.

00:01:58Let's get right to our BMW track analysis, David.

00:02:02Well, we're on board with Felipe Massa, and this is what it looks like in the dry,

00:02:05past the start-finish line here at about 165 miles an hour to Saint-Devote.

00:02:10Right-hander up the hill now through Beau Rivage.

00:02:14You can see how narrow it is. We heard Mark Webber saying earlier on, you know, you're right,

00:02:17but you've got to concentrate more here than anywhere.

00:02:19This is Massenet, 100-mile-an-hour corner, hemmed in by guardrail both sides,

00:02:23swooped down to Casino Square, over that big bump where a side street comes in, Mirabeau.

00:02:28We often see a lot of action down here at Mirabeau, and of course the tight hairpin,

00:02:32where we've seen a number of bottlenecks.

00:02:34Have to have special suspension fitted on these cars to get around that hairpin.

00:02:37Down into Poitiers under the bridge here, past the hotel, out of Poitiers, into the tunnel,

00:02:43into the tunnel at about 130, out of the tunnel at nearly 180 miles an hour,

00:02:48into that blinding sunlight, hard on the brakes with Nouvelle Chicane, left, right, sweep.

00:02:55Up through the gearbox again, down to Tabac again, hemmed in on all sides,

00:02:59and here we get a really hair-raising part.

00:03:01The Piscine, left, right, another right, left, over the kerb, down to Rascasse.

00:03:09Rascasse, a very tight right-hander, restaurant on the right, full of high-paying patrons.

00:03:14And to the final corner, Anthony Nogue.

00:03:16Look at this, just as narrow as all get-out.

00:03:19Wheel up on the kerb, bouncing around, opposite locking.

00:03:22I tell you, there's a lot of action goes on here in just a very short period of time.

00:03:27And just imagine what it's like when the grip is compromised by rain.

00:03:32It's a bit stopping on these downhill streets.

00:03:35Don't forget, these are city streets, they're covered in diesel oil, rubber from buses,

00:03:40and goodness knows what else out there, so it's very, very slick.

00:03:42It's an absolute anachronism, racing these cars around this track,

00:03:46but that is a part of its mystique, and makes it so important to the drivers in the field.

00:03:53The field begins to roll off on the formation lap,

00:03:55and it appears that Heikki Kovalainen did not get away.

00:03:59Oh, there he is.

00:04:04Let's get to the starting grid on the pole.

00:04:06Felipe Massa in the Ferrari, the first Ferrari pole at Monaco since Michael Schumacher back in 2000.

00:04:12Next to him, Kimi Räikkönen, the world champion and championship leader coming in,

00:04:16but puzzled at why he seems to be losing Mojo to his teammate.

00:04:19Well, row two is all McLaren Mercedes.

00:04:21Hamilton just out-qualifying Kovalainen, but look at this disaster start for Kovalainen.

00:04:25After Thursday, McLaren looked very strong, but Ferrari did rally,

00:04:29and look tough now in any circuit configuration.

00:04:31Poor old Heikki Kovalainen, yet again, after Turkey two weeks ago.

00:04:34On row three, Robert Kubica in the BMW Sauber,

00:04:37the first time a Sauber has ever qualified top six in Monaco.

00:04:40Next to him, Nico Rosberg in the Williams Toyota,

00:04:42whose father, KK, started from this same row, row three, when he won for Williams 25 years ago.

00:04:48Fernando Alonso in his Renault lines up seventh.

00:04:50Pole sitter and winner of the last two Monaco Grand Prixs.

00:04:52Again, getting the best out of a poor car.

00:04:54Next to him, the Toyota Riano, truly eighth for the third successive race.

00:04:57Never been out-qualified by a teammate here yet.

00:05:00On row five, Mark Webber in the Red Bull Renault,

00:05:02a podium finisher in 05 for Williams.

00:05:04Next to Timo Glock in the Toyota, two Toyotas in the top ten for the second time this year.

00:05:09Jenson Buttonbridge, 11th in his Honda, still a long way to go with his car,

00:05:12still slow on the straight.

00:05:13Next to him, the enigma of the 08 season,

00:05:15Nick Heidfeldt's BMW, three-tenths of a second and seven spots behind his teammate.

00:05:19On row seven, Kaz Nakajima in the second Williams.

00:05:22His dad, Satoru Nakajima, failed to qualify here for Lotus in 1988 and 89.

00:05:27Next to him, Rubens Barrichello in the Honda, celebrated his 36th birthday on Friday.

00:05:32David Coulthard crashed on the last lap of Q2, one in tenth spot,

00:05:35but had to change the gearbox and took five spot penalties starting 15th.

00:05:38Two-time winner in this race.

00:05:40Next to him, the rookie, Sebastian Bourdais in the first, the new Toro Rosso chassis.

00:05:44On row nine, Nelson Piquet in the Renault,

00:05:46under increasing pressure for lack of results.

00:05:49Next to the rookie, Adrian Sutil with Force India Ferrari,

00:05:52who still hasn't started last.

00:05:55Sebastian Vettel for a gearbox change in the second Toro Rosso,

00:05:57and Giancarlo Fisichella starting his 200th Grand Prix

00:06:00with a five spot penalty for crashing into Nakajima two weeks ago in Turkey.

00:06:04There's Heikki Kovalainen, who will no doubt be a story in this race,

00:06:08but here are our Toyota storylines for the event to come.

00:06:11David?

00:06:12Well, the McLaren versus Ferrari race is getting down to the nitty-gritty now.

00:06:15We've lost the McLaren already at this early stage of this race.

00:06:17Ferrari have been looking tough.

00:06:19Everybody thought that here at Monte Carlo, McLaren might make a comeback,

00:06:22but Ferrari's on the front row.

00:06:24For me, it's track position and strategy.

00:06:26Those guys are running heavy fuel.

00:06:28Perhaps, Rosberg, you do not want to get stuck behind a one-stopper

00:06:32if you've got light fuel on board behind Rosberg.

00:06:35Well, for me, it's Monaco surprises, especially in the wet.

00:06:39Jean-Pierre Beltois took his only win here.

00:06:41The same for Olivier Pennis.

00:06:43K.K. Rosberg started on drives when everyone else had wets.

00:06:46He won in 83. Here come the lights.

00:06:49Everybody tiptoeing off the line.

00:06:53Bad start for Raikkonen.

00:06:55Hamilton gets around him.

00:06:58Hamilton gets around Raikkonen.

00:07:01All streaming through.

00:07:02You can see the spray starting to come up now.

00:07:04Boy, you need to be near the front here if it's going to rain.

00:07:07Yes, you do. And, guys, it is raining now.

00:07:09It's not just the spray that we're seeing.

00:07:11It is raining.

00:07:12Raining forecast for the next 20 minutes.

00:07:15Now, the key point to me, can they get around Massenet?

00:07:18Can they get around the casino hairpin?

00:07:20And remember, no traction control on these cars.

00:07:23The first time we've seen them racing in the wet without traction control.

00:07:27Incredibly important here that Hamilton managed to get past Kimi Raikkonen.

00:07:31But, of course, absolutely disastrous for his teammate.

00:07:33Oh, there's damage.

00:07:35Rosberg's wing's damaged.

00:07:36He ran into the back of Alonso's Renault.

00:07:40Yeah, these are the guys.

00:07:41Remember, at the top of the show, we're talking about storylines.

00:07:43If Rosberg has got a lot of fuel on board, well, he's just rammed into the back of Alonso.

00:07:48And he had a good chance there with that fuel load.

00:07:50Let's have another look at it.

00:07:51Right. There it is, guys.

00:07:53Oh, yeah.

00:07:54Well, it bounced back.

00:07:55I wonder if it just...

00:07:56The two Toyotas dangerously close to each other there.

00:07:59So that'll be Williams getting out into the pit lane already.

00:08:02There's too much damage on that wing.

00:08:04Rosberg will have to pit for a new wing.

00:08:06Also knocked out the rain light on the back of Alonso's Renault.

00:08:09Massa, Hamilton, then Raikkonen.

00:08:12With that slow getaway.

00:08:14Raikkonen not losing any ground.

00:08:18You can see the rain.

00:08:19Hamilton drove a brilliant race in the rain in Japan last year.

00:08:23Absolutely brilliant.

00:08:24Wow, look at these cars sliding.

00:08:26Again, I just want to say, this is the first time for a long while

00:08:29these guys have been racing in the wet without traction control.

00:08:33A lot of drivers worried about the stability of the cars.

00:08:36And Monaco, I mean, this is going to be the test of tests.

00:08:39The test of tests.

00:08:40The supreme challenge for driver skill.

00:08:42Oh boy, I'll say.

00:08:44On board with Jenson Button.

00:08:46Going down the inside of...

00:08:48I think that's Nick Heidfeldt.

00:08:50He's obviously quicker than Heidfeldt.

00:08:53And that's the result.

00:08:55Button in the pits, changing the nose.

00:08:57That's frustrating.

00:08:59Guys, I think we're going to see a lot of this.

00:09:01Intermediate tyres on the car, known in pit lane parlance.

00:09:05They're known to the FIA regulations, the sporting regulations, as wet.

00:09:09As opposed to the full wet, which was the heavy groove tyres.

00:09:12We're just going to see that contact now again, I'm sure.

00:09:14There it is. Bang!

00:09:15Frustrating for Button.

00:09:16He's obviously a lot quicker than Heidfeldt in those conditions.

00:09:19Now, where did that debris go?

00:09:20The front wing came completely off and was sort of snow ploughed by the race car

00:09:24until, well...

00:09:25It dropped off somewhere down there.

00:09:27Down around Rescasse.

00:09:29Back comes the Honda.

00:09:31Is that the safety car coming out behind him?

00:09:33There's no indication. It's not even yellow.

00:09:37A lot of rain on that lens.

00:09:38It looks like it's drier on the start-finish straightaway,

00:09:41the Boulevard Prince Albert,

00:09:43than it is around other parts of the circuit.

00:09:45A little bit of rooster tail here around the swimming pool.

00:09:47The piscine.

00:09:48Well, Felipe Massa here started the gap Hamilton,

00:09:51which I'm absolutely surprised at.

00:09:52Hamilton is not...

00:09:54Hamilton's not up...

00:09:55I mean, Massa's not known as a great wet-weather driver.

00:09:58Yeah, I wonder how much fuel load David's putting into this.

00:10:01Again, Hamilton was not upset in yesterday's post-qualifying press conference

00:10:06and saying they've got a good strategy on board.

00:10:08And if they've got a little bit more fuel on board,

00:10:10well, of course, you know...

00:10:12Strategies around Monaco are iffy at the best of times.

00:10:14Strategies in the wet are incredibly iffy

00:10:16because as soon as the safety car comes out,

00:10:18they're going to bunch that field back up.

00:10:20But Massa, if he is light on fuel,

00:10:22he has really got to put the hammer down now.

00:10:24That, of course, is easier said than done

00:10:26around Monaco and without TC.

00:10:31Lewis not looking too upset.

00:10:33After the unilateral interview I did with the top three yesterday,

00:10:36first thing Lewis said to the other two was,

00:10:38hey, guys, if it's wet tomorrow, it's going to be fun, eh?

00:10:40And they both sort of looked at him and their eyes as big as saucers.

00:10:43And the last laugh was on Lewis, I think.

00:10:47Keep an eye on the Renaults.

00:10:48We had a wet-dry combined session on Saturday

00:10:52and the Renaults of Alonso and Piquet did a lot of lapping

00:10:55while the rest of the car stayed in the garage.

00:10:59There you see the getaway from the rear.

00:11:01Oh, Alonso's light wasn't even on at the start of the race.

00:11:04I thought he lost it when he got rear-ended by Rosberg.

00:11:07Yeah, good point. Talking about Rosberg, Bob,

00:11:09as we're watching this replay play down,

00:11:11Rosberg did not come into the pits.

00:11:13We just saw him flash past the pits down into Sainte-Denis

00:11:16and up the hill there, running the same wing.

00:11:18I guess they're hoping, those guys are hoping, for a safety car.

00:11:22Boy, that was an incredible jump by Hamilton.

00:11:24It was. It was a great start.

00:11:26He jolly nearly got down the inside of Felipe Massa

00:11:29to go up Beau Rivage here.

00:11:31It's raining a lot heavier now,

00:11:33but Hamilton unable to make an impression on Felipe Massa.

00:11:37Oh, what happened to Raikkonen?

00:11:39Should have been in that picture then.

00:11:41Oh, listen to this.

00:11:47That's the other thing that happens when the rain builds up

00:11:49is there's water on the road and vision is obscured.

00:11:55Oh, Rosberg. Yeah, he finally comes into the pits.

00:11:59Boy, that Ferrari's got some jolly good grip here.

00:12:01He's doing well.

00:12:02Because the other driver who's doing, again,

00:12:04an amazing job is Alonso.

00:12:06His true driving skill's coming out now.

00:12:08The car not compromised so much by the dry track.

00:12:11There you see the deranged wing.

00:12:13The order is Massa, Hamilton,

00:12:15who just set fast lap of the race,

00:12:17a 1.35.440.

00:12:20It's about 20 seconds off what these cars will do in the dry.

00:12:23Raikkonen third, Kubica fourth,

00:12:25Alonso fifth, then Trulli,

00:12:27Glock, Heidfeld and Weber.

00:12:31Oh, boy, that's severely compromised.

00:12:33Poor old Nico Rosberg's race.

00:12:35He looked...

00:12:36Very sound strategy.

00:12:37Looked like he had his.

00:12:38Well, but we've got a long way to go.

00:12:4075 laps to go in these conditions.

00:12:44I think Glock's missing his front wing, too.

00:12:47There he is, just going around the hairpin.

00:12:49There's no main plane on the front wing.

00:12:53And look how much time Glock had made up on his teammate.

00:12:58Adrian Sutil in the Force India car,

00:13:01up to 13th after starting 18th.

00:13:07Well, this is where it gets nasty.

00:13:09The tunnel, just greasy,

00:13:10because all the water they drag in.

00:13:12Then as he burst out into the rain again,

00:13:14hard on the brakes,

00:13:15down to the Nouvelle Chicane.

00:13:17This is where David Coulthard had a heavy crash

00:13:19in the second session of knockout qualifying.

00:13:21He was unable to participate in the third session.

00:13:24They were able to salvage the monocoque.

00:13:26He did change the gearbox,

00:13:27and suffered that five grid spot penalty

00:13:29that David mentioned earlier.

00:13:31I tell you, Glock has got no front wing,

00:13:33and seems to be...

00:13:36Well, going pretty quick.

00:13:37He's holding up a trainer car behind him,

00:13:39but he's not losing that much ground.

00:13:41See if he pits now.

00:13:43Come on, man.

00:13:44Is it just not that big of a deal around the place?

00:13:55I think they were just gambling on a safety car coming out

00:13:57and being able to make the best use of it,

00:13:59but it just didn't pay out for them.

00:14:08He's lucky he didn't lose a whole lot.

00:14:23Here come the extreme wets.

00:14:25Yeah, you'll notice these,

00:14:26like the soft compound tyres,

00:14:28have got that white stripe,

00:14:29new for 2008,

00:14:30around the tyre to indicate to us.

00:14:33Well, if I had been at a pit stop there to change a wing,

00:14:35I wouldn't think twice about putting the full wets on at the moment,

00:14:39because this could give them a huge advantage.

00:14:41But, you know, like you said earlier on, Steve,

00:14:43visibility is the big problem now.

00:14:45Getting past people you can't see to get by people.

00:14:47Look at Massa draw away from Hamilton.

00:14:49I find that absolutely unbelievable.

00:14:52Remember the Japanese Grand Prix at Fuji last year,

00:14:55where Hamilton never put a wheel wrong,

00:14:57while everybody else was sliding all over the racetrack?

00:14:59Alonso crashed so heavily in the other McLaren?

00:15:03Wow.

00:15:05Massa not driving, as he would say,

00:15:07like a grandmother right now.

00:15:08Sure isn't.

00:15:10Perhaps Hamilton is just dropping back a little bit

00:15:12to preserve the visibility

00:15:14in these just awful conditions.

00:15:16And the Kimpster also dropping back quite a bit,

00:15:18almost into the clutches now of Robert Kubica.

00:15:22Here comes Alonso, driving very well.

00:15:24Where are the changes in the running order from grid position?

00:15:28Everybody moving up with the exception of Raikkonen.

00:15:32Let's go to Peter Windsor with more on Timo Glock.

00:15:36Well, Bob, I need to recount a little incident

00:15:38during the GP2 race.

00:15:41Listen to Fernando Alonso.

00:15:45Can't judge at the minute. Only Nelson we can't judge.

00:15:52Fernando asking about full wets there.

00:15:55The conditions obviously getting worse by the lap at the moment.

00:15:58Yes, a little incident with Timo Glock during the GP2 race.

00:16:00He was hanging around with his iSport guys,

00:16:02who he knew really well,

00:16:03who he won the championship with in GP2.

00:16:04They were asking how it was going

00:16:06after Thursday practice in Formula 1.

00:16:07And Timo, I overheard the conversation,

00:16:09was basically saying that he'd got Jarno nailed.

00:16:11Oh, I speak Lewis.

00:16:12Hamilton has a problem with the right rear.

00:16:14That's his race over.

00:16:15He's hit the wall going into the back

00:16:17and he's going to have to come into the pits now,

00:16:19obviously for a change.

00:16:20This could work out well for him

00:16:22in the sense that he's going to switch to wets.

00:16:24Right rear tyre is down.

00:16:26He hit the wall in the to back corner

00:16:29just before reaching the swimming pool.

00:16:31Now, Bob, the question is,

00:16:33A, are they going to go extreme wets?

00:16:35And B, what has happened to the suspension?

00:16:37Remember, they are carbon suspension, not steel.

00:16:40The mechanics left a very good look

00:16:42in case there's damage to the wishbones around the car.

00:16:45You see the guys fall on it to have a look.

00:16:48Now going back to the intermediate tyre.

00:16:53And they'll send him back out.

00:16:54It seems hard to believe that.

00:16:56He will have dodged a bullet, Dave.

00:16:58You're right.

00:16:59If there's been no damage to that suspension,

00:17:01that was fairly hefty clout onto the Armco to have done that.

00:17:04He will certainly have dodged a bullet.

00:17:06But yeah, interesting conversation

00:17:08between Alonso's engineers

00:17:10and Alonso when they were talking about

00:17:12gauging the performance of the full wets.

00:17:14Let's have another look at Hamilton,

00:17:16how he made it to the...

00:17:18Oh, there it is, just going in.

00:17:20Yeah, it was enough to...

00:17:22Enough to take the tyre bead off the rim.

00:17:25But hopefully for Hamilton,

00:17:27enough not sufficient to have damaged the suspension.

00:17:30But I think what the conversation we heard earlier on

00:17:32was Alonso trying to gauge from Piquet's engineers

00:17:35how he felt the performance of the full wets.

00:17:37Because Piquet, his teammate,

00:17:39is currently on those extreme wet tyres.

00:17:43Oh, Robert Kubica driving brilliantly again in the rain,

00:17:46all over Kimi Räikkönen.

00:17:48Caught him up, there's Alonso coming to pick you down.

00:17:51Interesting, Kubica,

00:17:53although he is a very downbeat personality,

00:17:55is very proud of his car control skills.

00:17:57In fact, he thinks he will complete his Formula 1 career,

00:18:00and then he said he'd like to try rally racing.

00:18:08Speaking of which, the world champion,

00:18:10Sebastian Loeb, is among the celebrities on hand this weekend.

00:18:13Loeb apparently wants to go circuit racing.

00:18:17Glock on the extreme wet tyres,

00:18:19just set a time of 39.4.

00:18:22Massa just set a time on the intermediate tyres of 1.40.

00:18:26So there's not an awful lot of performance difference

00:18:28between Glock's Toyota on the extreme wets

00:18:31and Massa's Ferrari on the inters.

00:18:36But Massa, I mean, Massa's lap times

00:18:38have dropped like three seconds a lap

00:18:40since the start of the race with this weather change

00:18:43and the more and more water that's falling on the track.

00:18:45Well, there's some steering lock from Hamilton.

00:18:47Absolutely.

00:18:50Hamilton rejoined in fifth place,

00:18:51so the order is now Massa, Räikkönen, a Ferrari 1.2,

00:18:54then Kubica, Alonso, Hamilton,

00:18:56Trulli in the Toyota, Heidfeld's BMW,

00:18:59Weber, Nakajima, and David Coulthard

00:19:02in the Red Bull Renault, the top ten.

00:19:04I think it was a very unusual decision by McLaren

00:19:06to put Hamilton onto intermediate tyres again

00:19:10when he came in for that.

00:19:11Well, they may have a weather forecast

00:19:12that tells them maybe it's going to stop raining again soon.

00:19:15But Hamilton's got 17 seconds of clear track

00:19:17in front of him up to Alonso.

00:19:19Up the yellow flag there.

00:19:21Somebody else down there.

00:19:23Oh, Alonso.

00:19:24There it is, right rear.

00:19:25And that is the suspension, I think.

00:19:27That right rear is sort of...

00:19:29Oh, crap.

00:19:30Oh!

00:19:31Now, safety car, period.

00:19:34Well, there's a lot of action down there.

00:19:36This is at Massenet.

00:19:38David Coulthard in Bordet.

00:19:39Sebastian Bordet had just passed Adrian Sutil

00:19:43to move into 12th place.

00:19:44As you see, the Renault team in the pits.

00:19:46Now, there's Alonso.

00:19:48Yeah, there's Alonso.

00:19:49That's in Massenet.

00:19:50There's more action up the top of Massenet.

00:19:52Now, I must stress, this is not a safety car, period,

00:19:55but I'm suggesting it may be because of the damage.

00:19:57But bear in mind, there it is, guys.

00:19:59There's a safety car, period.

00:20:01Now, remember, you're not allowed to refuel at this point.

00:20:05The pits are technically closed,

00:20:07but you can work on the car if it's been damaged.

00:20:09So they could do a mechanical change.

00:20:11You cannot refuel.

00:20:22Yeah, so Alonso's guys, Renault guys,

00:20:24perfectly within the regulations now to work on the car.

00:20:27But as far as refueling,

00:20:29should they decide to refuel, they certainly can do.

00:20:32The FIA won't physically stop them.

00:20:34If they do refuel, they'll have a 10-second stop-go penalty

00:20:37until we see the graphic to suggest that the pit lane is open.

00:20:41You just saw there Alan Permain, chief race engineer,

00:20:44put his thumb up to say suspension is okay on Alonso's car.

00:22:11there's a look back at race leader Felipe Massa.

00:22:14Behind him is Ferrari teammate Kimi Räikkönen's name

00:22:16just came up on the stewards list.

00:22:18They are investigating some sort of incident.

00:22:21We don't know what happened,

00:22:22but Räikkönen has come under the stewards' scrutiny.

00:22:27You see Massa dropping further and further back now

00:22:29to try and get ready for the restart.

00:22:31The lights are off on the safety car.

00:22:34Perversely, of course.

00:22:35Hamilton was helped enormously by that.

00:22:38He's fourth, only four seconds behind the leader,

00:22:41in spite of hitting the wall.

00:22:43Here we go.

00:22:45Massa leads away.

00:22:47Good restart.

00:22:49Brilliant restart.

00:22:50Once again, all that water in the air

00:22:52is going to make you want to drift back a little bit,

00:22:54I would think.

00:22:57Just coming into the race,

00:22:58the prediction for rain was for the first 20 minutes.

00:23:01Well, we're now at 21 minutes,

00:23:0321 minutes and 40 seconds after the start of the race.

00:23:07If there is no more rain expected,

00:23:09that could be the reason why these guys are preferring

00:23:11to stay out on these intermediate tyres

00:23:13as opposed to dive into the pits and go on to extreme wets.

00:23:16Drive-through penalty for Kimi Räikkönen

00:23:19for having the tyres not fitted at the three-minute signal

00:23:22when the mechanics get off the grid.

00:23:24Yeah, there's a requirement in the Sporting Regulations

00:23:26that at three minutes,

00:23:27the tyres, the wheels and tyres of the car

00:23:29will start the race on,

00:23:31must be fitted to the car.

00:23:33We see the guys come out on any sorts of tyres

00:23:36from the paddock onto the grid,

00:23:37and you often see the tyres come off the car

00:23:39and tyre blankets put on,

00:23:40and they wait until the very last minute

00:23:42to make that decision.

00:23:43But it looks like Ferrari just did not get away with it.

00:23:47Each car has allegated an FIA official

00:23:49to watch for that sort of thing.

00:23:52I just cannot believe

00:23:53how well Felipe Massa is driving in the rain.

00:23:56Just can't believe it.

00:24:04I was talking to Chris Dyer before the start of the race,

00:24:07and he seemed pretty adamant about what he was going to run.

00:24:09It's amazing they could have made that mistake,

00:24:11particularly in the context of the Japanese Grand Prix last year,

00:24:13when Ferrari managed to mess that up as well

00:24:16and were on the wrong tyres at the start of the race.

00:24:18What a disappointment for Kimi Räikkönen.

00:24:20Devastating.

00:24:21Chris Dyer is his engineer.

00:24:23Remember, they came to the grid in an absolute monsoon

00:24:25at the Fuji Circuit on intermediate tyres,

00:24:28and they then went out there

00:24:29and looked like somebody taking their first turn

00:24:31on figure skates.

00:24:32Now, Robert Kubica is between Räikkönen and Hamilton,

00:24:36and Hamilton's going to have his work cut around

00:24:37to get around Robert Kubica.

00:24:39Kubica's doing some very good laps,

00:24:41and Kubica and Hamilton go back a long way

00:24:43into the lesser formulas.

00:24:45Kubica is a tough driver.

00:24:49In fact, Kubica's last lap was a 44.2.

00:24:51Hamilton's last lap was a 45.2.

00:24:53Massa's last lap was a 41.7.

00:24:56I just noticed that.

00:24:58So, boy.

00:24:59Boy, oh boy.

00:25:46Hard to believe that Felipe Massa's job

00:25:49was considered to be in jeopardy

00:25:53in the first two races of the year.

00:25:56As I mentioned earlier,

00:25:57two wins in the last three races

00:25:59and a runner-up finish in the one he didn't win.

00:26:01And here he is, just dominating here in the early going

00:26:03in Monaco, a track that he says he doesn't like very much.

00:26:07Räikkönen not coming in to do that drive-through.

00:26:10Now, he's got just one more lap to answer that.

00:30:03Now, we know that Sutil is very good in the rain

00:30:21But again, a team like Williams,

00:30:23they haven't got the resources of the big hitters any longer

00:30:26like Ferrari and like McLaren.

00:33:23both Nick Heidfeld and Robert Kubica said,

00:33:26we think we can do very well in Monaco.

00:33:29That long-sought first victory for BMW Sauber.

00:33:33This may be their best opportunity.

00:33:37Meanwhile, on track, race leader Robert Kubica

00:33:39and the other BMW.

00:33:40Purple in sector 2, the middle sector.

00:33:43If the rain holds off now,

00:33:45these are the tyres to have,

00:33:47what they call the wet tyres,

00:33:49what is known in the pit lane as the intermediate tyres.

00:33:51And they're setting fast times.

00:47:00to use the soft compound tyres to comply with the regulations.

01:28:13and it's almost as if he used too much and lifted the car,

01:28:15and he's on the dries, and maybe that apex is a bit wet,

01:28:18and it was a really weird accident.

01:28:21That's what happens when you use too much curb.

01:28:25Well, you lift the car up in the air,

01:28:26and of course it won't turn when it's in the air.

01:28:28You can turn the wheel as much as you like,

01:28:29but if the wheels aren't actually touching the ground,

01:28:33He did get very wide, but of course that is always a danger
