The Rise of “Dragon Drones”
A series of videos posted on social media, including by Ukraine's Defense Ministry, shows these drones dropping torrents of fire onto Russian positions. The drones release thermite—a chemical mixture of aluminum powder and iron oxide—which burns at temperatures as high as 4,000°F (2,200°C). This creates a scene eerily reminiscent of fire-breathing dragons, earning the drones their nickname.

Ukraine's 60th Mechanized Brigade proudly shared, “Strike drones are our wings of vengeance, bringing fire straight from the sky,” highlighting their powerful psychological impact on the battlefield.

What is Thermite and Why is it So Deadly?
Thermite, discovered by a German chemist in the 1890s, was originally used for welding railroad tracks. However, its military potential became apparent during the World Wars when it was used by both Germany and the Allies in bombs and to disable enemy artillery.

00:00In the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia, a new, fearsome weapon has emerged, fire-spewing
00:06dragon drones.
00:08These modern machines, echoing a tactic from both world wars, are now raining down torrents
00:13of fire onto Russian positions.
00:16Recent videos circulating on social media, including a post from Ukraine's defense ministry,
00:22show these low-flying drones releasing streams of molten metal, thermite, over Russian-held
00:27areas.
00:28This deadly mixture of aluminum powder and iron oxide can reach temperatures as high
00:33as 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit, incinerating trees, vegetation, and anything else in its
00:39path.
00:40As the thermite falls from the sky, it resembles the fiery breath of a dragon, inspiring the
00:45nickname for these drones.
00:48Ukraine's 60th Mechanized Brigade took to social media, saying, our strike drones are
00:53the wings of vengeance, bringing fire straight from the sky.
00:57Thermite has a long and devastating history.
01:00First discovered in the 1890s, it was initially used to weld railroad tracks.
01:05However, its military applications quickly became evident, with both the Germans and
01:10allies utilizing it during the world wars.
01:14Its incredible heat allows it to melt through nearly anything, even metal, making it a formidable
01:19tool on the battlefield.
01:21According to defense expert Nicholas Drummond, the real power of these thermite drones may
01:26lie in their psychological impact.
01:29He explains, it's very nasty stuff, and using drones to deliver it is innovative.
01:35However, its psychological effect on enemy troops might be greater than the physical
01:39damage it causes.
01:41In recent reports, Ukraine has been using these drones to take out Russian tanks by
01:46dropping thermite directly into the hatches.
01:49Once inside, the intense heat destroys everything within.
01:53The precision and ability to bypass traditional defenses make thermite bombs an effective
01:58tool in modern warfare.
02:01Thermite is just one type of incendiary weapon, alongside others like napalm and white phosphorus,
02:07which can cause large-scale destruction.
02:10According to the United Nations, these weapons are difficult to control and can devastate
02:14large areas, causing massive environmental damage.
02:19While Ukraine is innovating on the battlefield, Russia has also been accused of using incendiary
02:24weapons against civilian targets.
02:27Throughout the war, Russian forces have allegedly launched similar attacks on Ukrainian cities,
02:32including Kharkiv and Bakhmut, leading to scenes of devastation.
02:37Although these weapons haven't been game-changers in the conflict, the fear they create is undeniable.
02:43As Drummond explains, we've seen Russian forces flee their positions after multiple
02:47drone attacks.
02:49The more fear Ukraine can create with its drones, the better their chances of success.
02:55The war between Ukraine and Russia continues, but one thing is clear, Ukraine's innovative
03:00tactics are keeping the pressure on, and their Dragon drones are playing a major role in
03:04the fight.
