00:00It is our resolve to reduce criminality and restore law and order in our beloved
00:06twin island state in the shortest possible time. In that regard and on this
00:14occasion I again give to the national community the undertaking that the
00:20Trinidad and Tobago Police Service is fully invested in this battle. There is
00:25more of us than there is of them and we will not stop until we succeed and we
00:30are determined to succeed. A message of strength and perseverance from the top
00:36cop this Independence Day as despite its ongoing efforts the TTPS is reporting an
00:43increase in the homicide rate. Unfortunately all that work has been
00:48eclipsed by one index the national homicide rate which the date has
00:55increased by 7% when compared to the same period in 2023. This increase being
01:03experienced primarily in three divisions, Port of Spain, Eastern and Tobago. The top
01:11cop laments what she calls a new dynamic in homicides that of multiple fatalities
01:17in one incident. Although we have succeeded in reducing the number of
01:21incidents we have had more deaths and that's because in their desperation the
01:28perpetrators are utilizing more lethal high-powered weapons in a more cavalier
01:34manner committing multiple double homicides triple quadruple and even
01:41quintuple homicides in a singular event. This is not the result that we are happy
01:49about and this is not the outcome we have worked for. We are however undaunted.
01:56Still the top cop says the police have been successful at reducing serious
02:02crimes on a whole among other wins. I am grateful to report that our crime
02:08fighting efforts to date in 2024 have yielded a 16% reduction in serious
02:16crimes compared to the same period in 2023. Homicide rates are lower in five of
02:23the police divisions when compared to last year. We have seized just over 400
02:30firearms. The Commissioner is reminding the public that crime fighting is
02:35everyone's business.
03:05The TTPS acknowledges that it has the principal role for law enforcement and we are not abdicating that responsibility.
03:15The Commissioner says the TTPS continues its social work through its walkabouts,
03:19community meetings, police youth clubs and the like. The TTPS also recently
03:26launched its customer service program. Renassa Cutting, TV6 News.
