00:00Men from all walks of life came out in their numbers for the North Central
00:04Regional Health Authority's Men's Health Initiative at Trinity Mall. Among the
00:10services were general screening, check-ups, nutrition and dietetics
00:14counseling, but most importantly, prostate-specific antigen testing or PSA
00:21testing used to screen for cancer.
00:24For the Indo-Trinidadian, for every one case you get, you have four in the Afro-Trinidadian group.
00:30For every one Indo-Trinidadian male who dies from prostate cancer, five men of African descent die.
00:38And we have been saying this for years, that the particular type of prostate
00:43cancer we see in the Afro-Caribbean man is very, very aggressive. So hopefully we
00:49can catch a lot of these men early, early as possible.
00:53Testing for prostate cancer has for decades been taboo.
00:57Before the advent of this kit, men could determine whether their prostate was enlarged via either a blood test,
01:06taking venous blood, or a digital prostate exam. And many men shied away from that.
01:13Technological advancements in the medical field have changed that.
01:18This simple 10-minute test, which we are now in our second round of bringing to the public,
01:26gives you a PSA result of four and above or four and below in 10 minutes. We've just taken a
01:32finger prick, like a diabetes test. And as you can see, the response has been fantastic.
01:40And like with many other diseases, early detection is key to standing a fighting chance.
01:46Early detection increases your chances of survival, and that is the message.
01:52All this took place at Trinity Mall, but simultaneous exercises were underway at
01:57South Park, Long Circular Mall, and the Enhanced Health Centre in Sangre Grandi.
