00:00:00It's for those who remember when racing was great.
00:00:07It's for those who love their cars to be red.
00:00:10It's for fans who adore their drivers as heroes facing unassailable odds.
00:00:15It's the home of the Tifosi.
00:00:17It's the spiritual ground of Ferrari.
00:00:20Monza carries with it more myths and legends, more historical landmarks,
00:00:24more tragic ironies and triumphant glories
00:00:27than all other circuits on the calendar together.
00:00:29It seems every great driver has his own connection with the place.
00:00:33Whether it be happy or sad, Monza touches the soul.
00:01:00Welcome to round 14 of the FIA Formula One World Championship,
00:01:05the 51st annual Italian Grand Prix.
00:01:08This is Monza.
00:01:10I'm Mike Joy, alongside five-time Le Mans winner
00:01:12and former Ferrari Formula One driver Derek Bell
00:01:15and former Williams and Ferrari team manager Peter Windsor
00:01:18will join us from the pit lane.
00:01:20Let's have a look at what's coming up on our Mercedes-Benz pre-race today.
00:01:23The Tifosi were delighted with qualifying
00:01:27and will count down to the U.S. Grand Prix coming in just two weeks.
00:01:31We'll continue our tour of Ferrari headquarters
00:01:33and Peter Windsor's exclusive interview with Luca Montezemolo.
00:01:40So cars are out on their reconnaissance laps.
00:01:43A couple rolling through the pit lane.
00:01:45One of the Jordans going out on track.
00:01:48Jordan just celebrating their 10th anniversary
00:01:50with a big party at Donington last week.
00:01:5220,000 folks showed up
00:01:54and a great time was had by everybody.
00:01:56Jordan not faring quite so well this year,
00:01:58as you see manufacturers' points right there.
00:02:00McLaren eight up on Ferraris.
00:02:02The drivers have Mika Hakkinen ahead now of Michael Schumacher by six.
00:02:07David Coulthard is still there.
00:02:09Ruben's chances are fading.
00:02:11And then Ralph and Giancarlo.
00:02:13As far as the constructors are concerned,
00:02:15McLaren have 125 to Ferrari's 117,
00:02:18Williams on 30, Benetton 18, Jordan 13 and Bayer Honda 12.
00:02:25It'll be a very hot day in Monza
00:02:28as the Tifosi await their Ferraris to return to the grid
00:02:33after the final reconnaissance lap.
00:02:35And pulling up, let's go down to the paddock and Peter
00:02:38and get caught up on how things are settling in for next year.
00:02:43Here's Peter Windsor.
00:02:46Well, it looks finally as if the market is beginning to solidify
00:02:49because Nick Heidfelder signed a three-year deal
00:02:51with Sauber Petronas Ferrari.
00:02:53That's a great move for him.
00:02:54And, of course, he's effectively replacing Mika Salo,
00:02:56who's testing next year for Toyota.
00:02:59The other Sauber driver, question mark, could be Pedro Diniz,
00:03:01but more likely to be Riccardo Zonta.
00:03:03And Pedro Diniz looking more seriously now at Prost.
00:03:06Luciano Berti's being confirmed as Eddie Irvine's team-mate
00:03:09at Jaguar Cosworth next year.
00:03:10And Alexander Boerts has found a home finally at McLaren,
00:03:13replacing Olivier Panis as their third driver, as their test driver.
00:03:17More tyres available next year,
00:03:18which means hopefully we'll see more cars going out
00:03:20at the beginning of Friday practice.
00:03:22At the moment, they tend to stay in the garage to conserve their tyres.
00:03:25With more sets available,
00:03:26pretty likely that we'll see more cars out there.
00:03:28The big news, however, is that Ekbal Hamidi,
00:03:30the much-rated aerodynamicist who worked very well for Williams,
00:03:34for Stewart, and currently setting the scene at Arrows,
00:03:37has been snapped up by none other than Eddie Jordan.
00:03:39He'll be joining Jordan at the end of his term at Arrows.
00:03:42That's the end of 2001, effectively replacing Mike Gascoigne,
00:03:46who at that point will be leaving to go to Benetton.
00:03:48Finally, we are celebrating here Honda's 200th Grand Prix.
00:03:51This is the circuit in which they last scored a victory as a complete team,
00:03:54as a Honda chassis and engine, in the 1967 Italian Grand Prix.
00:03:58John Surtees won by the margin of 0.2 of a second.
00:04:01Let's hope it's that close today.
00:04:04Thanks, Peter.
00:04:05That was really a very close victory, wasn't it?
00:04:07Gosh, it was. We don't see those often anymore.
00:04:11Well, the cars are about to come around
00:04:13to complete their reconnaissance laps and form up on the grid here.
00:04:17And the Tifosi, 135,000 of them.
00:04:20The place is a sellout, and they've occupied every seat,
00:04:23and even the trees here.
00:04:25Well, BMW Williams has had a great re-entry into Formula 1,
00:04:29and Peter spoke to some of the team principals
00:04:31about how this season has gone.
00:04:35Well, it has really been exciting for us so far.
00:04:39When we started, we knew we were pretty well prepared,
00:04:43but Williams achieved fifth place last year
00:04:48in Constructor's Championship with an experienced engine partner,
00:04:52so this was our target for the learning season.
00:04:57We are third so far, and of course,
00:04:59we'll try our best to keep this position.
00:05:02What are your realistic goals for 2001?
00:05:05I'm not sure that podium positions were envisaged,
00:05:08but certainly getting some points was envisaged,
00:05:11and for the second year, to be more of a competitive player
00:05:16and possibly to win a race or two,
00:05:20but be closer to the lead teams.
00:05:24And for the third year, to be starting the year
00:05:27as a championship contender.
00:05:30Obviously, that's the background target,
00:05:33but in truth, one would like to beat it.
00:05:36Well, one has to say, while we're having Montoya and Ralf Schumacher there next year,
00:05:40they must have a great chance of getting some victories next season.
00:05:42Well, those are lofty goals, but from what they've done this year,
00:05:45they seem as if they could be attainable.
00:05:48David Coulthard being pushed back into the garage after one of his laps,
00:05:53and we'll be back to show you qualifying,
00:05:56where the Tifosi went wild yesterday, that's for sure.
00:06:05Welcome back to Monza, as our Mercedes-Benz pre-race continues.
00:06:09Derek, they've held 49 Grand Prixs here at Monza,
00:06:1249 of the 50 Italian Grand Prixs have been here.
00:06:15No other track has such a history in Formula One.
00:06:18Oh, it is the most outrageous track, I must say,
00:06:21and they have changed it a few times,
00:06:23and we're just going to take a look at some of the changes that have been made just for this year.
00:06:26This is the old track as it was last year,
00:06:28with the first and second chicanes.
00:06:30They've changed it, as you'll now see,
00:06:33and they put a very sharp right and left-hander into this first chicane,
00:06:36called the Variante Goodyear,
00:06:38and the drivers have very mixed feelings about it.
00:06:40They think there's going to be a big pile-up on the first lap.
00:06:42They may well be right, but so let's go and do a lap
00:06:45of this 3.59 mile circuit with Rubens Barrichello.
00:06:48We're now going by the pits, obviously, on the right-hand side.
00:06:52This is the track which has been raced on many times,
00:06:54onto this new surface, this new rain surface.
00:06:57Look how he comes in here, has a tremendous job slowing down
00:07:00to get the car pointed into this new Goodyear chicane.
00:07:04As he came in there, he was actually pulling 4G
00:07:06and right down to 60 miles an hour as he turned in there.
00:07:09Accelerating around the very famous Curva Grande,
00:07:11which we used to take flat all the way.
00:07:14Down into the Variante de la Rocha.
00:07:16This is 205 miles an hour as he brakes.
00:07:184G again under braking.
00:07:20Puts the car through there in second gear, 70 miles an hour.
00:07:23Accelerates out up to the famous Lesmo corners.
00:07:26These are very, very tricky corners.
00:07:28Very, very fast corners indeed.
00:07:30And he accelerates out the second part.
00:07:32In fact, somebody's gone off in front of him,
00:07:34which, of course, has slowed him down somewhat in that corner,
00:07:37so he won't be going flat from there on in.
00:07:39Up, pulling his way up towards the...
00:07:42underneath the old circuit.
00:07:44Here it is, under the bank circuit there,
00:07:46up into the Ascari curve.
00:07:47He's doing 210 miles an hour.
00:07:49He brakes down into fourth gear,
00:07:51goes to the first part of the Ascari curve,
00:07:53into the second part.
00:07:54Out he goes onto the straight, pulling 135 on the exit.
00:07:58As he goes howling down the straight,
00:08:00collating into sixth and seventh gear,
00:08:02up to 210 miles an hour.
00:08:04Brakes for the very famous Parabolica corner,
00:08:07which has not changed at all in the last 50 years.
00:08:10Accelerates out of the Parabolica.
00:08:12You've got to be as smooth as you can coming up,
00:08:14because this leads on to the great straight past the pits.
00:08:16That was a lap with Rubens Barrichello.
00:08:20Here the track surface is very flat, as you notice.
00:08:22The grip level is medium.
00:08:23Tire compound, they're actually wearing
00:08:25the softer of the medium tires.
00:08:27Tire wear is high.
00:08:28Brake wear is very high.
00:08:29The highest of the whole year.
00:08:30Maximum throttle, 71% of the lap naturally.
00:08:33Fuel consumption is high as well.
00:08:35But it is low downforce as well, Mike.
00:08:37And, Derek, we expect tire degradation
00:08:39to really be a factor today?
00:08:41We certainly do.
00:08:42Ferraris, I know, amongst others have had blistering.
00:08:44Ferraris always seem to wear their tires
00:08:46harder than McLaren,
00:08:48because McLaren is such a perfect motor car.
00:08:50So that is going to be a very, very important factor.
00:08:52Only one car did a two-stop strategy last year.
00:08:55That was Prost.
00:08:56This year we possibly expect more to do it.
00:08:58Well, let's have a look and see how
00:09:00these grid positions were determined
00:09:02in yesterday's qualifying.
00:09:04Here we're qualifying in front of
00:09:06an absolutely packed grandstand area.
00:09:09People hanging from the trees on the mobile,
00:09:11doing some sort of dodgy deal back there in Milan.
00:09:13But it was Jacques Villeneuve who went out early on
00:09:15in the much-improved BAR,
00:09:17proving that the car is really well up there.
00:09:19He was to go faster as the session terminated later on.
00:09:22Michael Schumacher, he got out early on,
00:09:24made a bit of an error on one of the chicanes
00:09:26and had to be settled with an early time.
00:09:28He actually got pole position, an incredible time,
00:09:31very early on in the session.
00:09:33Nonetheless, that was his best effort
00:09:36you could see for the weekend.
00:09:37Nevertheless, Mika Hakkinen went out
00:09:39and he was trying all he could.
00:09:40With a slightly later development engine
00:09:42that they've been using all year,
00:09:44he could only manage third place on the grid.
00:09:46Rubens Barrichellam meanwhile, he went out
00:09:48and he was inside Michael's time
00:09:50for the first part of the lap.
00:09:51He has been right up at the front of the grid
00:09:53the whole weekend, only managed second.
00:09:55He's on the front row at this time.
00:09:56Jack Villeneuve, what a great fourth place for him.
00:09:59Very satisfying.
00:10:00Best grid position for BAR yet.
00:10:02David Coulthard, well,
00:10:04he had another coming together with his friend
00:10:06Heinz-Harald Frenzel and he did it at Spa
00:10:08and that blew his best time
00:10:10and he could only manage fifth on the grid.
00:10:14And Michael Schumacher can only sit there
00:10:16for the last ten minutes, but he got pole.
00:10:18So, let's hear what Michael Schumacher's views
00:10:20are on for the race.
00:10:23It's a good thing,
00:10:25because if we're both up there,
00:10:27it means the car is good, it's competitive
00:10:29and obviously for the championship,
00:10:33if we two could be up front,
00:10:36I mean, Rubens could give me a big support.
00:10:39Let's see whether I have to support him
00:10:41or he supports me.
00:10:43We'll find out tomorrow.
00:10:44It's good to have the team up there,
00:10:47you know, I mean, we've been fighting,
00:10:49Michael has been fighting quite a lot
00:10:51for this championship
00:10:53and to have the car competitive in front of
00:10:55the home of Ferrari,
00:10:57it's really nice.
00:10:59I believe we are able to
00:11:03to find solutions for tomorrow,
00:11:06that way we can make the car quicker
00:11:08and I'm confident about that.
00:11:11Peter Windsor is talking to the leading
00:11:13Italian driver in the field, Jarno Trulli.
00:11:16Jarno Trulli, first Italian after Ferrari,
00:11:19number six on the grid.
00:11:20Tell us about the first corner,
00:11:21what's it going to be like,
00:11:22this new safe chicane?
00:11:23A new safe, it's safe.
00:11:25In fact, we did a step forward in terms of safety,
00:11:28but in fact, we will probably have a problem
00:11:31tomorrow morning during the race at the start.
00:11:35You can attack in the beginning
00:11:37and you can choose which line you want to stay.
00:11:40And then you have to hope that nothing happens
00:11:43in front of you and behind you.
00:11:45Well, let's hope that.
00:11:46I'm sure it won't.
00:11:47Best of luck in the race.
00:11:48Thank you very much.
00:11:50Some of the drivers have already
00:11:51settled into their cars.
00:11:52You see Jacques Villeneuve,
00:11:53he's already climbed in,
00:11:54cocooned himself in that car,
00:11:56while other drivers are still out
00:11:57talking to mechanics and well-wishers
00:11:59and about to climb aboard
00:12:01for the business at hand.
00:12:04We will be back with more of our
00:12:06Mercedes-Benz pre-race in a moment.
00:12:08Earlier this weekend, our camera crew
00:12:10got to stroll around Milan
00:12:11and do a little shopping,
00:12:13as did David Coulthard and Jean Alessi.
00:12:19The long-awaited return of Formula One
00:12:22to the United States
00:12:23is coming in two weeks' time
00:12:25at the historic Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
00:12:28For the first time,
00:12:29they'll race clockwise
00:12:30and will be there wall-to-wall.
00:12:32Friday, live practice
00:12:33at noon and 2 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time.
00:12:36Saturday, live coverage of qualifying
00:12:38and Sunday, a one-hour pre-race
00:12:40and the United States Grand Prix.
00:12:43Here on Fox Sportsnet Live.
00:12:47Schumacher's car being attended to.
00:12:53A little brake work,
00:12:54and David Coulthard, we're told,
00:12:56went into the garage
00:12:57for a rear sway bar change.
00:12:59Yes, well, of course,
00:13:00he had a moment this morning
00:13:01where the rear suspension
00:13:02collapsed on his car,
00:13:03as it did in practice yesterday.
00:13:05So, therefore,
00:13:06I think they're just playing
00:13:07very, very safe indeed.
00:13:12Well, in two weeks' time,
00:13:13they'll all line up at Indianapolis,
00:13:15and what a different
00:13:16Indianapolis Motor Speedway
00:13:17will be than years past.
00:13:20Thought we'd have a little fun here
00:13:21and show you in time-lapse photography
00:13:23some of the new construction.
00:13:24At the bottom of the screen,
00:13:26you see the new garages
00:13:27that were built for the needs
00:13:29and dictates of Formula One,
00:13:31whose rules require
00:13:32that the garages exit
00:13:33directly onto the pit lane.
00:13:35Gasoline Alley is behind this area
00:13:37and wasn't suitable.
00:13:39You have to have suites
00:13:40atop the garages
00:13:41for the use of the teams,
00:13:42and the master control tower
00:13:44is replaced by the structure
00:13:45on the left,
00:13:46this beautiful new
00:13:47ten-story pagoda
00:13:48that dominates
00:13:49the western Indianapolis skyline.
00:13:51It's a beautiful building,
00:13:52very reminiscent
00:13:53of the historic former structure
00:13:56that stood there
00:13:57for so many years.
00:13:58Yes, this is an amazing piece of work
00:14:00that they've done there,
00:14:01and as you know,
00:14:02we've been there quite a few times now,
00:14:03and the circuit itself,
00:14:04the drivers seem to like it very much,
00:14:06which is really what it's all about.
00:14:07Heck, with what the pits are like,
00:14:09it's what is the track like,
00:14:10and I think it's going to be
00:14:11very intriguing.
00:14:12Going to be a lot of passing opportunities
00:14:13and we're apt to see
00:14:14a lot of drafting and slipstreaming
00:14:16and slingshotting
00:14:17along the Indianapolis front straightaway.
00:14:20So everybody,
00:14:21hope your bags are packed
00:14:22and your tickets are bought,
00:14:23and if not,
00:14:24we hope you'll join us here
00:14:25on Fox Sportsnet
00:14:26for Friday qualifying,
00:14:27a Friday practice,
00:14:28Saturday qualifying,
00:14:29and a one-hour pre-race
00:14:31and the race two weeks from today.
00:14:34Well, they're still working away
00:14:36on that McLaren,
00:14:37trying to get it right down
00:14:39to the last second,
00:14:40getting things prepared on it.
00:14:42They haven't been,
00:14:43lads haven't been happy
00:14:44with their cars this weekend.
00:14:45They mentioned before
00:14:46they're running a development engine
00:14:48this weekend,
00:14:49and they've done certain,
00:14:50they're always doing extra developments
00:14:52on the chassis,
00:14:53but it hasn't been that competitive
00:14:54with Ferrari,
00:14:55which I'm absolutely astounded.
00:14:56Well, Mika Hakkinen said
00:14:57in his qualifying run,
00:14:58he had an engine misfire
00:15:00on both the second and third runs
00:15:01at the end of the long straightaway,
00:15:03the engine misfiring badly,
00:15:04so that's when he said
00:15:06the car would be right for today.
00:15:07I'm sure he's confident
00:15:08in the Ilmore technicians
00:15:09to get rid of that misfire.
00:15:11Well, of course,
00:15:12this is David's car
00:15:13they're working on now,
00:15:14of course.
00:15:16Well, let's join Peter earlier.
00:15:19He took our Fox Sportsnet cameras
00:15:22on an exclusive tour
00:15:23of Ferrari's racing headquarters
00:15:26at Marinello.
00:15:29The Pista de Fiorano,
00:15:30in other words,
00:15:31Ferrari's private test track,
00:15:32every team's dream,
00:15:34their own circuit.
00:15:35This actually, of course,
00:15:36is an old farmhouse,
00:15:37and Enzo Ferrari used this
00:15:39as his office
00:15:40from 1968 onwards
00:15:41when he first sold out to Fiat.
00:15:43Number 27 in the Commune de Fiorano,
00:15:45in the province of Fiorano,
00:15:47part of Marinello, of course.
00:15:49Number 27,
00:15:50Gilles Villeneuve's favourite number,
00:15:51so a bit of a coincidence there,
00:15:52don't you think?
00:15:53Inside here,
00:15:54hallowed ground.
00:15:55This is where many teams,
00:15:56many technical directors,
00:15:58and many team managers,
00:15:59many teams of drivers
00:16:00have met and talked
00:16:01before Grands Prix.
00:16:03This is the circuit manager's office.
00:16:05Two chairs there,
00:16:06one with Mick Asalo's signature,
00:16:07one with Eddie Irvine's.
00:16:09So, perhaps needs a bit of updating there.
00:16:12Let's go up the stairs.
00:16:13Up the top here is where Enzo Ferrari
00:16:15used to watch Grands Prix
00:16:17when he stopped attending them himself
00:16:19because of ill health
00:16:20and sadly passed away
00:16:2120 years or so ago now.
00:16:23But this is where he watched the races,
00:16:25sitting on these sofas.
00:16:26Probably not a TV screen
00:16:27quite as big as that,
00:16:29but this is the actual room
00:16:30where Enzo Ferrari
00:16:31watched his Grands Prix.
00:16:32And then up here,
00:16:33this is the famous meeting room
00:16:35where the drivers
00:16:36and the technical personnel
00:16:37of the team
00:16:38discuss what they're going to do
00:16:39at the next Grands Prix.
00:16:41One only has to dream
00:16:42to think of the sort of words
00:16:43and the sort of people
00:16:44that have occupied this room.
00:16:46There are a lot of ghosts here
00:16:47and some brilliant photographs.
00:16:49I particularly like this one here
00:16:50of obviously a Fokker meeting
00:16:52in the early 90s.
00:16:53Bernie Eccleston there,
00:16:54Luca Mondezemlo
00:16:55looking a little bit younger,
00:16:56Ron Dennis in the background,
00:16:57and of course Frank Williams.
00:16:59And I've been perusing this for a while.
00:17:00As you can imagine,
00:17:01it's heaven for a Formula 1 enthusiast.
00:17:03My favourite wall is down here.
00:17:05This is the Carlos Reutemann wall.
00:17:06Lots of great pictures of Carlos
00:17:08and Gilles Villeneuve.
00:17:10And some wonderful pictures over here
00:17:12of Luca with Gianni Agnelli,
00:17:14Luca Mondezemlo with Niki Lauda.
00:17:16Through the window here,
00:17:17of course we can see the circuit.
00:17:20It's just been sprayed with water,
00:17:21which is how they simulate
00:17:22wet weather testing.
00:17:23And there we see a Ferrari 333 sports car
00:17:25being tested here
00:17:26on this lovely sunny afternoon.
00:17:29This really is a motor racing haven.
00:17:31The pits down there
00:17:32contain fantastic
00:17:33electronic timing equipment.
00:17:35There's an array of monitors
00:17:36that will blow your mind.
00:17:38Lots of photographs,
00:17:39lots of models,
00:17:40lots of history.
00:17:41And just across the other side
00:17:42of the corridor here,
00:17:43there's a self-contained apartment
00:17:44where drivers like Michael Schumacher
00:17:46and Rubens Barrichello
00:17:47stay overnight
00:17:48if they've got to do a two-
00:17:49or a three-day test.
00:17:51Well, I have to say,
00:17:52for the fans,
00:17:53it must be very special.
00:17:54But as a former driver,
00:17:55it's almost impossible
00:17:56to put into words, Michael,
00:17:57the emotion of actually being
00:17:58part of that history.
00:17:59I would imagine.
00:18:00And of course it goes back
00:18:01through the entire history
00:18:02of Formula 1,
00:18:03Ferrari winning its first
00:18:04championship in 1951,
00:18:06half a century ago.
00:18:10We're getting closer to race time.
00:18:12Speaking of which,
00:18:13Tag Heuer this weekend
00:18:14introduced a new watch
00:18:15appropriately called the Monza.
00:18:17I had a number of the drivers out
00:18:19to try them on.
00:18:25The Italian Grand Prix

00:18:33nothing outperforms Mobile One.
00:18:40Well, we're getting down to it

00:18:43The remaining races,
00:18:44you'll see them all

00:19:01live to close out
00:19:03the 2000 season.
00:19:08Well, work continues
00:19:09on David Coulthard's car.
00:19:10A cause for alarm, Derek?
00:19:12Well, it always is.
00:19:13As you're the driver
00:19:14sitting there thinking
00:19:15there's about four minutes to go,
00:19:16and here we are.
00:19:17The guys have got the car
00:19:18spread out across the track,
00:19:19but I'm sure they'll have it
00:19:20under control.
00:19:21Well, as we sit here
00:19:22so close to the home of Ferrari,
00:19:23it's appropriate to conclude
00:19:25Peter's exclusive
00:19:26Fox Sports Net
00:19:27one-on-one interview
00:19:28with Luca Montezemolo.
00:19:30We continued our discussion
00:19:31with Luca Montezemolo,
00:19:32chairman of Ferrari,
00:19:33by raising the subject of budgets.
00:19:35Of course, I wanted to know
00:19:36how big the Ferrari budget was,
00:19:37so I defused the question
00:19:38by asking how it was apportioned.
00:19:40What came from sponsorship?
00:19:41What comes from road cars?
00:19:42What falls out of the sky?
00:19:45If you assume
00:19:47that we spend 100,
00:19:48we have 60-65%
00:19:52coming from three main voices.
00:19:55Sponsors,
00:19:56prices from FOA,
00:19:59TV and merchandising.
00:20:01These three voices
00:20:03mean between 60 and 70%
00:20:06of our total cost.
00:20:0830% is covered not by FIAT.
00:20:11FIAT doesn't pay anything.
00:20:12FIAT is one of the sponsors
00:20:15of the car,
00:20:16but not the biggest,
00:20:18not between the three biggest sponsors.
00:20:23We cover the cost
00:20:25with the revenue coming out
00:20:27from our road car activities.
00:20:29But do you set a limit of 60 or 70%
00:20:32or would you like to have
00:20:3395% commercial sponsorship
00:20:35if you could?
00:20:36If I can, I would like to have 100%,
00:20:38but it's not so easy
00:20:39because, again,
00:20:40we have to spend a lot of money,
00:20:43particularly on the engine.
00:20:45The engine is the highest cost
00:20:47inside our Formula 1 activity,
00:20:50project, development, spare parts.
00:20:52The engine is extremely expensive.
00:20:54So you're saying that,
00:20:55let's say your budget is $300 million,
00:20:57you're saying that...
00:20:58You say this.
00:20:59I'm saying let's say that,
00:21:00for an example.
00:21:01I don't say that.
00:21:02Let's take that as a round number.
00:21:05It is impossible
00:21:06to find that amount of money per year.
00:21:08You're saying that's not achievable
00:21:10in terms of sponsorship.
00:21:11At the moment for us it's impossible
00:21:12even because
00:21:14Bernie doesn't give us enough money yet.
00:21:17Let's talk about Bernie.
00:21:19Rate him.
00:21:20Has he done a good job?
00:21:21Yes.
00:21:22Is he doing a good job?
00:21:23Yes.
00:21:24I met him in 1973,
00:21:27again in those meetings,
00:21:29fantastic meetings in London.
00:21:33I think he has done a lot.
00:21:35He has done a lot in Formula 1.
00:21:36He has done a lot for Formula 1
00:21:38and for the teams.
00:21:39I think that we have to think very carefully
00:21:43what is going on after Bernie,
00:21:46when Bernie decides to stop.
00:21:48And I think it's important
00:21:50to have a very clear
00:21:52and good talk between the teams,
00:21:56particularly Williams, McLaren and ourselves.
00:21:59We have to talk very carefully for the future.
00:22:02Because I think now
00:22:03between merchandising, TV,
00:22:05publicity inside the tracks,
00:22:08we have the possibility
00:22:10due to what Bernie has done
00:22:12and due to the fact that today
00:22:14we have the biggest car manufacturers
00:22:17in Formula 1.
00:22:18Unfortunately,
00:22:19I say unfortunately,
00:22:20they do only engines.
00:22:21But I think that Formula 1,
00:22:25going even to the United States,
00:22:27is facing a very important moment.
00:22:29But do you ever talk to Bernie
00:22:31about what he thinks might happen
00:22:32when he's not in control anymore?
00:22:34You know Bernie.
00:22:35This is something very difficult to talk with.
00:22:37Because Bernie is a fantastic person
00:22:39looking at tomorrow.
00:22:41Talking about after tomorrow
00:22:42is a little bit too difficult for him.
00:22:44How did Enzo Ferrari and Bernie get on?
00:22:47Good.
00:22:48Difficult moments.
00:22:50Some big polemics.
00:22:52But they helped each other a lot.
00:22:55As we try to do the same today
00:22:57in the difficult moment
00:22:58when it is necessary to sign first the documents.
00:23:01He always uses Ferrari.
00:23:03Ferrari is already signed.
00:23:04Why don't you sign yourself too?
00:23:06But we are happy to do it.
00:23:08Do you think Ferrari and McLaren
00:23:10are treated differently
00:23:12by the FIA
00:23:13or by the Formula 1 industry in general?
00:23:16I know that this is the idea of somebody.
00:23:19Well, I don't think so.
00:23:21I think that...
00:23:23Just to make an example.
00:23:25We have got a problem
00:23:27at the end of last season in Malaysia.
00:23:29But this is not a question to treat differently or not.
00:23:32We put the piece in front of the court
00:23:35and they took the measure
00:23:36and they said that we are okay.
00:23:38So this is not a discretionary.
00:23:40I don't know how...
00:23:41This is a fact.
00:23:43I think that...
00:23:46I think that McLaren is a very strong team
00:23:50with a big history.
00:23:52I respect them
00:23:53even because they are very strong.
00:23:55And I like...
00:23:56As I respect the other,
00:23:58I pretend that the other respects us.
00:24:00What road cars do you drive at the moment?
00:24:02550 Maranello and Maserati.
00:24:04I like Maserati's everyday cars
00:24:07because it's a car that you can drive
00:24:09in every single condition.
00:24:11And my preferred Ferrari is at the moment
00:24:13the 550 Maranello.
00:24:14But I've got something in mind in the future
00:24:17that will be the best Ferrari.
00:24:19But this is in my mind at the moment.
00:24:21What is the best road car of all time,
00:24:23do you think, for you?
00:24:28For me, because it's a part of my heart,
00:24:31was my first car, the Fiat 500.
00:24:33For me, it was like God.
00:24:36My first race was with this car
00:24:38and I took it in secret from my father
00:24:42without a driver's license.
00:24:44This is the car that I drove first.
00:24:47He's a big man, Luca Mondezemolo.
00:24:49He's big in Italy.
00:24:50He's big in the context of Formula 1.
00:24:52But deep inside,
00:24:53although he carries a lot of responsibility,
00:24:55there's a zest for life that is infectious.
00:24:57And it certainly carries the Ferrari tradition.
00:25:00Is it their racing history?
00:25:02Is it those wonderful red road cars?
00:25:04Is it all the great drivers?
00:25:06Ferrari Mystique is all of that and more.
00:25:09We'll be right back with the start
00:25:11of the Italian Grand Prix on Fox Sports Net.
00:25:24Welcome back to Monza as the grid is clearing
00:25:26for the formation lap for the Italian Grand Prix.
00:25:29The 51st such race and the 50th to be held
00:25:33here at Monza.
00:25:3582 degrees trackside.
00:25:37The asphalt is 104.
00:25:39Humidity is moderate.
00:25:40No chance of rain.
00:25:42And just a scant breeze.
00:25:46Still a lot of work there at the back of the grid
00:25:48on one of the minorities.
00:25:50That was Gennaise.
00:25:52Now the grid is clear.
00:25:55Waiting for the lights
00:25:57and the formation lap.
00:26:00So, as they take off in a lot of wheel spin
00:26:03and tire smoke that we won't see
00:26:05at the start of this race,
00:26:07here's our Mercedes-Benz starting grid.
00:26:09Michael Schumacher has his 29th career pull
00:26:11and his 6th of the season.
00:26:13Rubens Barrichello alongside him.
00:26:15He said it's great to be on the front row
00:26:17at Ferrari's spiritual home.
00:26:19Mika Hakkinen, that misfire we talked about.
00:26:21He said it cost him four tenths.
00:26:23He's in row two.
00:26:25And Villeneuve, what could he be but very happy.
00:26:27David Coulthard.
00:26:29The balance of his car not optimum
00:26:31in his last run lost to traffic.
00:26:33The crew did a great job
00:26:35solving his hydraulic pump failure
00:26:37that he had early in the morning.
00:26:39Ralf Schumacher thought he'd be one row higher
00:26:41than the fourth on the grid
00:26:43but nonetheless satisfied.
00:26:45And Frenzel, well, his last run was spoiled by traffic.
00:26:47Fisichella will line up ninth for Benetton.
00:26:49He says they're better in race trim
00:26:51than they are for qualifying.
00:26:53And Pedro, he said,
00:26:55I'm happy with my last run.
00:26:57Jasper Stappen had to climb into the T-car
00:26:59but it was set up for him
00:27:01so he managed 11th.
00:27:03Jenson Button not shining this week
00:27:05but he ran too little downforce in qualifying.
00:27:07Alexander Wurz very upset.
00:27:09The T-car not suited for him at all
00:27:11so he's back in the seventh row with Eddie Irvine
00:27:13who says the Jaguar is just short on top-end speed.
00:27:15Mika Salo in the eighth row.
00:27:17He said that's all the car had.
00:27:19Good enough for 15th.
00:27:21His teammate Pedro Nunez ran wide
00:27:23and Mark Chicane on his last lap.
00:27:25Their time is virtually identical, however.
00:27:27In the ninth row,
00:27:29Ricardo Zonta had gear problems,
00:27:31had to switch to the spare car.
00:27:33Way off pace.
00:27:35And Johnny Herbert, same complaint as Irvine.
00:27:37Not enough top speed for the Jag.
00:27:39Sean Lacey and Nick Heidfeld in the pros.
00:27:41Alain Prost said these are just not high-speed cars.
00:27:43They're not aerodynamically matched
00:27:45to this type of circuit.
00:27:47So they're back in the 10th row
00:27:49just ahead of Minardi.
00:27:51Now, qualifying Mazzacani
00:27:53by a full second.
00:27:55Mazzacani saying he was being very conservative,
00:27:57just trying to bank a time, but the fact is
00:27:59the Minardis are slow.
00:28:01And that's our starting grid.
00:28:03Well, they're just working their way
00:28:05from the Parabolica up onto the starting grid
00:28:07at this very moment.
00:28:11Very, very tense moment for the drivers now.
00:28:13They know that all they've got to do
00:28:15is get those lights right, and that is the critical part.
00:28:17Can I get my timing right
00:28:19as those lights go out?
00:28:21And for Jacques Villeneuve, he could move
00:28:23B.A.R. today up to 5th in the
00:28:25Constructor's Championship, or perhaps even
00:28:274th. That's possible.
00:28:29Well, you just watch what he does.
00:28:31He's on the far top side of your picture there.
00:28:33I mean, he has had some dynamic starts
00:28:35this year, as, of course, has Mika Hakkinen.
00:28:37Let's just see what happens up the front there
00:28:39and see what those two can do about the two Ferraris
00:28:41who haven't had the greatest starts this year.
00:28:43Derek, the car that was being worked on
00:28:45very late as they tried to get the lights up
00:28:47for the formation lap was Nick Heidfeld's Prost.
00:28:49It was not Mazzucconi, and there may be
00:28:51a penalty on Heidfeld, but he is
00:28:53taking up his normal grid position.
00:28:55Don't say he can penalize somebody
00:28:57that's on the penultimate row of the grid.
00:28:59Excuse me, but you're so right.
00:29:01All right, turn one is that
00:29:03tight chicane. Many of the drivers have
00:29:05expressed concern that they all get through
00:29:07there safely, so let's go.
00:29:17Great start for Mika Hakkinen, and you have to say,
00:29:19look, is Hakkinen going to go by Schumacher?
00:29:21No, let's not do anything stupid
00:29:23in this first chicane.
00:29:25Truly side-by-side there, but they
00:29:27manage to sink it through, but no, one of the Jags
00:29:29is off and hard in the barrier,
00:29:31and another car takes to the grass.
00:29:33Well, they almost
00:29:35all got through.
00:29:43Oh, no, look at this!
00:29:45Jordans, Barrichello,
00:29:47McClaren, and Coulthard.
00:29:49Oh, my goodness, there must be
00:29:51debris behind, because there are so many cars
00:29:53somersaulting. What a disaster
00:29:55into the second chicane.
00:29:59They'll have to red-flag this.
00:30:01Both Jordans went spinning
00:30:03after contact. They collected Barrichello,
00:30:05they collected Coulthard, and then we
00:30:07saw more cars bouncing in, and
00:30:09one car, which I hate to speculate
00:30:11who actually
00:30:13flipped and went up in the air and over.
00:30:15Is that D.C. climbing out?
00:30:17Yeah, that's David getting out. He's OK.
00:30:19They're putting the engine out. There was a slight fireback.
00:30:21What a weekend he's had. Twice he's had
00:30:23suspension failure this weekend, and now
00:30:25he gets taken off a natural muzzle there.
00:30:27Oh, Barrichello. Who's up on top of
00:30:29Barrichello?
00:30:33Now, there's one driver
00:30:35in a blue suit who is out of the car.
00:30:39And OK, so...
00:30:43And a second walks
00:30:45away.
00:30:47Eddie, after his shot at the first
00:30:49chicane. Eddie will be glad that he
00:30:51went out at the first chicane. Didn't he go
00:30:53in that one? Johnny Herbert coasting
00:30:55around. And I thought they'd red-flag
00:30:57this, but instead they're bringing the safety car.
00:31:03Both Jordan drivers
00:31:05are OK. See both of them walking away.
00:31:09And...
00:31:11A lot of carnage all the way
00:31:13back through the field. Still
00:31:15can't tell. We'll have to wait for replays to see which
00:31:17of that car was flipped up and over.
00:31:19I think you can have a job to see from any picture
00:31:21because there was so much dust. Once they got into that
00:31:23into the dirt there, look at that
00:31:25tormented car there. Absolutely
00:31:27twisted up.
00:31:33That Zonta coming in.
00:31:37There's Rubens. He's OK.
00:31:41David.
00:31:43Alright, the blue-suited chap I saw was from the medical car.
00:31:45Was not one of the drivers.
00:31:47At least not one of the drivers
00:31:49in the race.
00:31:51That's the great thing about having that medical car right behind.
00:31:53They can be out in a split second into the incident.
00:31:55Driven by one of the top
00:31:57European drivers. In this case
00:31:59I'm not sure which one it was, but the top
00:32:01touring car driver.
00:32:03I believe that's an arrow. You can't see it
00:32:05in this shot from the helicopter as it moves around.
00:32:07That's Coulthard's car being removed. But it looks like
00:32:09Rubens knows. Yes, it is.
00:32:11So it is one of the arrows that
00:32:13flipped up and over Barrichello's car.
00:32:17This is the first chicane. Let's face it.
00:32:19The first chicane. You see Eddie Irvine going off.
00:32:21Here we go. There's Eddie getting involved
00:32:23with one of the pros.
00:32:25Way out there.
00:32:27Look at the short-cutting of the chicane.
00:32:29Now we come to the second
00:32:31chicane, which is where it all happened.
00:32:33Here we come.
00:32:35Oh, it's an incident right behind the second Jordan.
00:32:37What a disaster.
00:32:39Now somebody's going to come pitching over the top.
00:32:41The second Jordan
00:32:43hit the first, and as they spun,
00:32:45collected Barrichello and Coulthard.
00:32:47There it goes.
00:32:49Here we are. This is riding with Jacques Villeneuve.
00:32:55Jacques obviously had a terrible start.
00:32:57Or got held up in the
00:32:59first chicane.
00:33:01And again, with all the damage
00:33:03to clean up, I'm a little surprised they're not
00:33:05flagging the race. If they red-flagged it,
00:33:07those drivers would have a chance to go
00:33:09and get their spare cars.
00:33:11But the safety car is out.
00:33:13Well, there's not much debris on the track itself.
00:33:15It's only in the sandpit.
00:33:17True.
00:33:19Look at the lead those two had with the shambles
00:33:21behind them. Look at Barrichello's...
00:33:23No, I think that is the arrows
00:33:25going through. That's the arrows
00:33:27going through. My goodness, he was somersaulting
00:33:29as he went through. I mean, a miracle.
00:33:31He didn't hit those drivers. It was de la Rosa we're told.
00:33:33But the miracle that he didn't hit
00:33:35either of the cars on top.
00:33:37So he didn't damage the drivers. Absolutely
00:33:39miraculous.
00:33:43Someone being attended to
00:33:45just off the circuit there.
00:33:51We shan't speculate as to who it is.
00:33:53But...
00:33:57Here's another look at the start from above.
00:33:59And gee, we see wheelspin. We haven't seen any wheelspin
00:34:01in the last few weeks.
00:34:09Rubens has an atrocious start there.
00:34:11Tries to hold people up now.
00:34:13It's really going for second chicane that we really
00:34:15should be interested.
00:34:19Schumacher goes through and, in fact, Hacken...
00:34:21Oh, here we go. There's Eddy going down the outside.
00:34:23I don't see who he got. Did he get into...
00:34:25I can't tell.
00:34:27And it's the next aerial shot
00:34:29that we need to see.
00:34:31Which we're not going to.
00:34:33And we're riding now again with Villeneuve
00:34:35as he keeps his tyres up to pressure,
00:34:37up to temperature.
00:34:43So these laps are counting.
00:34:45And again, as you mentioned, Derek,
00:34:47because the track was not blocked,
00:34:49the red flag was not issued.
00:34:53I'm just one observer, but I think
00:34:55any time you have a multiple car shunt
00:34:57like that on the first lap,
00:34:59that you should restart.
00:35:01On the other hand, I guess it's not fair
00:35:03to the drivers who made it through safely.
00:35:05There goes Barrichello's car.
00:35:07So we are under caution
00:35:09after a horrific crash
00:35:11on the first lap of the Italian Grand Prix.
00:35:13You're watching Formula One
00:35:15on Fox Sportsnet.
00:35:19Welcome back to the 51st Italian Grand Prix
00:35:21at Monza. Here is another look.
00:35:23You'll see Schumacher and the two McLarens.
00:35:25And look at the right corner of your screen
00:35:27at the Jordans.
00:35:29See if there's a clue as to how all of this started.
00:35:33There! Right there.
00:35:35There's a wheelbanger.
00:35:37It looked like one Jordan came through
00:35:39to touch the other. It looked like.
00:35:41But whether he was pivoted into doing it
00:35:43was difficult to say.
00:35:45And you see Barrichello on the right of your screen there
00:35:47getting taken out.
00:35:49On the left is Trulli, then Coulthard.
00:35:51And then Frenzen on your right of your screen
00:35:53now, with no front wheels at all.
00:35:57Now you'll see
00:35:59the arrows of De La Rosa.
00:36:01No, you won't.
00:36:03Now we did see
00:36:05Barrichello,
00:36:07Coulthard, and the two
00:36:09Jordan drivers walk away.
00:36:11We've also seen during the break
00:36:13David walking back through
00:36:15the pit area. We know that they are OK.
00:36:17There is as yet no update on
00:36:19the condition of Pedro De La Rosa.
00:36:21So we are still
00:36:23under caution.
00:36:25And let's show you the start again, and you'll see
00:36:27that Jacques Villeneuve, who's gotten
00:36:29such great starts this season, starting
00:36:31third, just does not get off the grid
00:36:33well, and there's a lot of movement back behind
00:36:35row six.
00:36:37And there's Jacques right in the midst, right behind Trulli
00:36:39and way over to the inside.
00:36:41And he gets caught out at the chicane.
00:36:43Yes, he gets held well back.
00:36:45Both McLarens going through.
00:36:47And
00:36:49Irvine not making it.
00:36:57Now let's have another look and see if
00:36:59perhaps
00:37:01Frentzen may have got into
00:37:03Barrichello. A little hard to see quite
00:37:05from that angle. And then that turned
00:37:07him into Jarno Trulli.
00:37:09Yes, he was coming, Frentzen was coming
00:37:11down the inside, and if you just lock up the brakes
00:37:13just a little bit, they say that new surface is
00:37:15very, very slippery. And of course
00:37:17in the excitement of the moment, unfortunately.
00:37:21The caution remains
00:37:23out here after this
00:37:25crash here on the very
00:37:27first lap.
00:37:29And those are the cars that
00:37:31are out of the race as a result. Let's add
00:37:33to that De La Rosa
00:37:35in the arrows. So both Jordans
00:37:37are gone.
00:37:39One of the McLarens,
00:37:41one of the Ferraris,
00:37:43both Jaguars.
00:37:45Although Johnny Herbert was able to limp
00:37:47around past the accident site.
00:37:49There's Rubens, he's OK.
00:37:55And since it all started right behind him,
00:37:57it'll be hard for him to
00:37:59quite describe what happened, but it looked like
00:38:01the Jordan of Frentzen got
00:38:03into Barrichello's right
00:38:05rear tire and turned him around.
00:38:07Yeah, but just that
00:38:09little touch in the back when you're on
00:38:11absolute maximum braking and there's
00:38:13nothing you can do at all when you're pulling
00:38:153G under braking and somebody
00:38:17taps you in the rear wheel. Boy, you are in a lot
00:38:19of trouble.
00:38:25It's hard to believe, but
00:38:27Jacques Villeneuve's horrible start
00:38:29may have saved him from being right
00:38:31in the middle of that. Absolutely. He would
00:38:33have been exactly where David Coulthard
00:38:35was, one assumes, and that was right behind Mika Hackel.
00:38:37Incredibly fortunate for Mika
00:38:39to become involved, just that he happened to be that much
00:38:41closer to Michael Schumacher at that point.
00:38:43As they went through the
00:38:45first chicane, of course David was
00:38:47close behind Mika, but he lost a bit, presumably
00:38:49coming out, which meant that he
00:38:51was in the clutches of the Barrichello
00:38:53scenario behind him.
00:38:55And a very shaken Barrichello, I feel sure,
00:38:57because that was a really nasty incident.
00:38:59Well, to have a car end up on, you know,
00:39:01just about on your head. Yes, it landed
00:39:03right on his left rear wheel when he was
00:39:05facing him, but not that he would have seen much
00:39:07of the dust storm there was.
00:39:09Barrichello looking
00:39:11at a replay of the aftermath of the incident.
00:39:13This is the new Goodyear chicane,
00:39:15which is where there only was a small
00:39:17incident with Irvine getting involved, which we saw
00:39:19with one of the Prosts.
00:39:25And after all that, the running order,
00:39:27Schumacher, the pole sitter, Hockenden,
00:39:29Villeneuve,
00:39:31who we saw steering through
00:39:33all of the carnage there,
00:39:35Ralf Schumacher in 4th, Fisichella
00:39:375th, Jensen Button up for
00:39:396th now.
00:39:41Alexander Wurz for 7th,
00:39:43Delsper Stapp in 8th,
00:39:45Marc Genet is up for 9th,
00:39:47Nick Heidfeld,
00:39:49Mazzucani and Peter Diniz.
00:39:53Well, looking at the number of people in the race
00:39:55left at the moment, it's going to be a very small
00:39:57field by the end of this
00:39:59multi-lap race.
00:40:01It's going to be decimated.
00:40:03We can see one of the Saubers sitting
00:40:05in there now. That's Mika Salo
00:40:09having a long stop and they're going to pull off
00:40:11some of the bodywork.
00:40:13Been in for over a minute right now.
00:40:17And still the lights are on and the safety car.
00:40:19The problem now, of course, is
00:40:21trying to keep that temperature up in your
00:40:23tyres, therefore keeping the pressure
00:40:25up in the tyres because they are
00:40:27set at a certain temperature and then
00:40:29they put the pressures right, assuming the tyres
00:40:31will only go higher in temperature and
00:40:33pressure as the race progresses. Right now
00:40:35they're not really getting any hotter.
00:40:37Yes, so this long caution
00:40:39will work in Michael Schumacher's
00:40:41favour because of the great concern
00:40:43Ferrari had about
00:40:45tyre wear. Yes, Ferrari had
00:40:47the best car here in qualifying, but it's pretty
00:40:49generally acknowledged that the race setup of
00:40:51the McLaren is much more
00:40:53forgiving of the
00:40:55tyre compound and
00:40:57that they would get better.
00:40:59Mika missed the chicane on the first lap out of
00:41:01the pits. And got the
00:41:03styrofoam barrier.
00:41:05Let's have another
00:41:07look at what happened as
00:41:09Pedro de la Rosa came into this scene and
00:41:11there was debris everywhere.
00:41:13He apparently went up and over a
00:41:15wheel.
00:41:17That was as he hit the Ferrari's
00:41:19wheel and came down.
00:41:21What an awful incident.
00:41:25So let's come back
00:41:27hopefully for the restart as we have
00:41:29eight laps under caution
00:41:31here in the Italian Grand Prix
00:41:33at Monza. You are watching Formula One
00:41:35on Fox Sportsnet.
00:41:37Welcome back to
00:41:39Fox Sportsnet's coverage of the Italian Grand Prix.
00:41:41The safety car will be in this lap, we're told.
00:41:43A lot of cleanup
00:41:45going on at that second chicane
00:41:47after an accident that took out
00:41:49Barrichello, Trulli, Frentzen,
00:41:51Coulthard and de la Rosa.
00:41:53And again we did see four
00:41:55of the five drivers walk away and we're waiting
00:41:57for an update on Pedro de la Rosa's condition.
00:42:05Drivers weaving to get a little heat back
00:42:07in those tires and keep them clean.
00:42:09As we've got
00:42:11ten laps now complete, all behind
00:42:13the safety car, which now
00:42:15has its lights out.
00:42:17So Schumacher will take off with
00:42:19Mika Häkkinen and Jacques Villeneuve and
00:42:21Ralf Schumacher in pursuit.
00:42:23As you said just now, Mike,
00:42:25this is going to make, be interesting
00:42:27just what happens to race strategy
00:42:29from now on, because we understood
00:42:31that the Ferraris were probably going to do
00:42:33a two-stop strategy.
00:42:35And, oh dear, dear, dear.
00:42:37There's one of the Williams.
00:42:39Yeah, Schumacher all but stopped.
00:42:41He really slowed. It was Jenson Button
00:42:43who had to take evasive action
00:42:45anticipating Schumacher taking
00:42:47off, but Michael wanted maximum distance
00:42:49between himself and the safety car.
00:42:51And now we're racing.
00:42:57So this will start
00:42:59the twelfth lap.
00:43:01All the drivers can hope is that
00:43:03the chicanes are very, very clean.
00:43:05They've got all the slivers of carbon up,
00:43:07got it out of the way, brusted it away.
00:43:09There was Jenson Button. He had to pull off at the Parabolica
00:43:11after he hit that tar wall
00:43:13coming down the straight.
00:43:15That was one of those immature things
00:43:17that happened, but Michael certainly did slow
00:43:19very, very much on the back straightaway.
00:43:21He could say to get everybody in line,
00:43:23here we go. Look at them all bunch up.
00:43:25See, they're flying from fifth on back
00:43:27and just next to the rail.
00:43:29He was lucky he didn't have a big, big,
00:43:31big, big one taken out half the field
00:43:33in front of him, but it certainly obviously didn't
00:43:35do anything for his left-hand side.
00:43:37Schumacher, of course, easing
00:43:39his way in front here. Villeneuve
00:43:41hanging on tentatively to the back of the McLaren.
00:43:43Well, Michael
00:43:45not wanting Mika to get a jump on him
00:43:47and it looks as if Mika cost Jenson
00:43:49the opportunity to finish this race.
00:43:51I mean, Jenson,
00:43:53obviously he was on it too soon for what
00:43:55transpired.
00:43:57There was a little bit of debris flying around there.
00:43:59You notice as they came out of the Lesmos,
00:44:01this could well have been something that
00:44:03somebody picked up during the incident
00:44:0511 laps ago
00:44:07and dragged it around in their car
00:44:09until they got going fast and then it fell out.
00:44:11But I've no doubt it will be picked up.
00:44:19Well, now we're going to see just how good this
00:44:21VAR is. Villeneuve said, I don't mind
00:44:23what happens in the championship.
00:44:25I would not pull over for anybody
00:44:27in the championship lead until the very
00:44:29final race, so I'm going to give it my all
00:44:31and he obviously will be doing that just today.
00:44:33And he said all weekend that he has a really
00:44:35excellent car and that now this team is
00:44:37finally showing its potential, so
00:44:39there he sits in third place,
00:44:41which is where he qualified.
00:44:43And Ralf Schumacher right behind
00:44:45in the remaining Williams BMW
00:44:47now that Button is off.
00:44:49Look at Jeunet up there in eighth place right behind
00:44:51Alexandre Verst. It's unbelievable, isn't it?
00:44:53Well, you know, good for him.
00:44:55There's a very great article, folks,
00:44:57in this week's Autosport
00:44:59about the minority team and it goes
00:45:01to great length about explaining
00:45:03their trials and pitfalls
00:45:05and their passion for this
00:45:07and why they're not just
00:45:09the grid filler
00:45:11that some folks imagine them to be.
00:45:13Very interesting reading.
00:45:17The camera doesn't really do this all justice
00:45:19as they're coming down that straight.
00:45:21They're actually doing one heck of a speed.
00:45:23Here's a replay of a little bit of a movement
00:45:25just now.
00:45:27Going into the
00:45:29second chicane.
00:45:31Michael Schumacher here is at this point
00:45:33you can actually see him. He's doing
00:45:35just about 200 miles an hour
00:45:37and he looks like he's doing 35 miles an hour
00:45:39as he brakes for the Parabolica.
00:45:41110 miles an hour
00:45:43as he goes through there.
00:45:45Verstappen all over the back
00:45:47of Fizzi Keller.
00:45:49So Schumacher leads
00:45:51for Ferrari, Haakon in second for McLaren.
00:45:532.1 seconds. There's the gap.
00:45:55Villeneuve third for VAR.
00:45:57Ralf Schumacher for Williams.
00:45:59We have six different constructors
00:46:01in the first six positions and
00:46:03God, Derek, I can't remember ever seeing that.
00:46:05Not for a considerable time.
00:46:07I haven't seen some of those names at the front
00:46:09for a long time, that's for sure.
00:46:11This stage of the race.
00:46:13Here's out of race and it's almost as long
00:46:15a list. Ten cars in that crash.
00:46:17Coulthard, Frentzen, Barrichello.
00:46:19Irvine off at the first chicane.
00:46:21Johnny Herbert involved
00:46:23as well with crash damage.
00:46:25De la Rosa
00:46:27who flipped up and over Coulthard's car.
00:46:29Jarno Trulli
00:46:31was there with Frentzen.
00:46:33And there's Micasalo.
00:46:35Kind of short-cutting and
00:46:37you notice they put up those styrofoam
00:46:39type blocks to keep a driver
00:46:41from gaining any real advantage as he
00:46:43must slalom through
00:46:45that area rather than take the chicane.
00:46:47Well, he does make a change from having 50-gallon drums.
00:46:49Fill that with cement, I have to admit.
00:46:53Here we are, braking for the Ascari chicane.
00:46:57Alberto Ascari, a very, very famous
00:46:59Italian driver, won the Italian Grand Prix
00:47:01once upon a time, twice
00:47:03upon a time in 51 and 52
00:47:05driving Ferraris. Remember, the first ever
00:47:07Grand Prix was won here by
00:47:09Dr. Giuseppe Farina in an Alfa Romeo
00:47:11in 1950.
00:47:13A long time ago.
00:47:15Zonta's been moving up.
00:47:17Well, remember, he was
00:47:19quickest in warm-up this morning, having
00:47:21had an awful qualifying session
00:47:23and practice sessions all weekend.
00:47:25He didn't do many laps at all
00:47:27over the weekend and went out this morning
00:47:29and was quickest.
00:47:31Just passing Wurz there, that should be for 7th place.
00:47:35Ooh, there's a little bit of work going on here.
00:47:37Verstappen? Yes, I'll pass
00:47:39Wurz as well.
00:47:41Let's ride with Fisichella.
00:47:51Here we go, it's Fisichella
00:47:53on the left, and look at Verstappen
00:47:55slipping through on the inside.
00:47:57Very bold move by him.
00:47:59Very good move, let me tell you.
00:48:01Another angle of it is they go through
00:48:03the first chicane, the Goodyear Variante.
00:48:05Goodyear, as they call it.
00:48:07Oh, no!
00:48:09Oh, no, that's just what we didn't need.
00:48:11Nauticac.
00:48:13Looks like there's some problem with the car.
00:48:15He just pulled over.
00:48:21He's just pulling off on the right-hand side of the picture.
00:48:23Expired.
00:48:25Honda have got a bit of a way to go on this department,
00:48:27that is for sure, but it certainly had some power
00:48:29this weekend.
00:48:31On the 200th anniversary of Honda
00:48:33racing,
00:48:35not always themselves, that's racing
00:48:37with other manufacturers too,
00:48:39with other constructors, should I say,
00:48:41other partners.
00:48:43Honda in Formula 1, 200 races,
00:48:4574 poles, 71 wins,
00:48:476 constructor championships,
00:48:495 driver championships.
00:48:51Participated as a constructor from
00:48:5364 to 68, and like
00:48:55Ferrari, during that period, they built both the chassis
00:48:57and the engine.
00:48:59Wasn't it Richie Ginther who got them their first win in Mexico
00:49:01in 66? Absolutely right, yes.
00:49:03I believe that I raced with Richie Ginther
00:49:05in that Honda at Monza in the Italian
00:49:07Grand Prix in 68.
00:49:11At least I can reminisce about one
00:49:13Italian Grand Prix.
00:49:15First hand. It's more than you, mate.
00:49:17Yes, quite.
00:49:19Here we go, we're riding with Fizzy Keller.
00:49:21Fizzy Keller, I would
00:49:23say, has a problem with his
00:49:25car.
00:49:27Backed off there and kept to the right-hand side of the road.
00:49:29Michael Schumacher, if he's...
00:49:31Of course, we don't know just how much fuel he is running.
00:49:33He...
00:49:35Naturally, if he was going for a two-stop strategy, he would have been
00:49:37running less fuel at the start, which wouldn't have been very bright
00:49:39because he saved a lot of fuel,
00:49:41maybe 50% of his fuel, as we look at
00:49:43one of the pros that spun.
00:49:45Nick Heidfeld.
00:49:47Nick Heidfeld signed a contract
00:49:49with Sauber
00:49:51for two to three years.
00:49:53I suppose it's worth mentioning these cars
00:49:55do not have self-starters.
00:49:57They're started in the pit lane by a remote
00:49:59device, and when you go around
00:50:01like that, they do have anti-stall
00:50:03devices on them as part of their computer
00:50:05programming, and
00:50:07often those work. But if a car
00:50:09stalls out on the circuit, the driver has no way to
00:50:11restart it, and that's why the field
00:50:13is dwindling here.
00:50:15Zonta is on a charge.
00:50:17Look at him, he's right up behind Ralf Schumacher.
00:50:19What a super bit of driving by Riccardo
00:50:21Zonta. Remember, he started
00:50:23quite well down the grid there.
00:50:25In 17th place, and he's now
00:50:27chasing
00:50:29Ralf Schumacher for 4th. Actually, for
00:50:313rd place.
00:50:33Nick Heidfeld, we saw, walking away from the Prost, and
00:50:35I believe he'll be happy to do so at the end of this
00:50:37season. And the Prost here has
00:50:39been really pretty dreadful.
00:50:41So, Schumacher's Ferrari, HÃ¥konen's
00:50:43McLaren, Verstappen
00:50:45in the Arrows up for 3rd, Fisichella's
00:50:47Benetton, Zonta's BAR,
00:50:49Wurtz's Benetton, now 6th.
00:50:51You're watching Formula 1 on Fox
00:50:53Sportsnet.
00:50:55Welcome back to a more
00:50:57eventful Italian Grand Prix than we had
00:50:59hoped for. Mike Joy with Derek Bell and
00:51:01Peter Windsor on the very
00:51:03first lap. At the first chicane,
00:51:05Eddie Irvine went off after
00:51:07contact. And at the second
00:51:09chicane, on
00:51:11the very first lap, Heinz-Harald Frentzen
00:51:13tipped into Rubens Barrichello's
00:51:15Ferrari.
00:51:17Both cars spun across, collecting
00:51:19Jarno Trulli's Jordan.
00:51:21The McLaren of David Coulthard,
00:51:23there they go.
00:51:25And then, Pedro De La Rosa
00:51:27comes into the smoke and the
00:51:29dust. And there were so many loose wheels.
00:51:31We're looking from the other replays
00:51:33that De La Rosa hit one of those wheels and
00:51:35it launched his car in the air,
00:51:37shedding its wings,
00:51:39bouncing up over Coulthard's car
00:51:41and onto Barrichello's.
00:51:43Here you'll see De La Rosa
00:51:45coming in. Already
00:51:47lost the left front. What a
00:51:49nasty ride.
00:51:51And it was on his first jolt that
00:51:53he shorn the front wing from Johnny
00:51:55Herbert's car. That must have put Herbert out of the race.
00:51:57But what a wild...
00:51:59Well, of course, there's no wheels
00:52:01in the car. There's not much to help keep it stable.
00:52:03What an awful
00:52:05incident.
00:52:07So now
00:52:09at 17 laps,
00:52:11Ferrari McLaren
00:52:13Arrows in 3rd place. B.A.R.
00:52:15in 4th. And look, this is the battle you see on
00:52:17the right side of your screen.
00:52:19Verstappen and Zonta going at it for
00:52:213rd place.
00:52:23Amazing. Zonta was 17th
00:52:25as he just out of the grid. And there he is
00:52:27right up there in 4th place,
00:52:29pushing for 3rd.
00:52:31We mentioned top
00:52:33of the show that B.A.R. was in position
00:52:35to take 5th in the Constructors' Championship
00:52:37and perhaps 4th. A look, a move...
00:52:39No. Just play it cool.
00:52:41But we thought it would be Villeneuve
00:52:43who's out with engine trouble.
00:52:45Not Riccardo Zonta, who, as you mentioned,
00:52:47did post the fastest warm-up time
00:52:49in the morning.
00:52:51Villeneuve
00:52:53said that his car just stopped, but we did
00:52:55see quite a sheet of, looked like flame
00:52:57out the back, but that could have been just when it
00:52:59said, that's it, and coughed and spluttered
00:53:01and banged, and that was all over.
00:53:04Hope you're taking something for that.
00:53:06Well, the engine stopped in that case. I just hope my
00:53:08clutter keeps working.
00:53:14Coming through the second part of the Lesmos,
00:53:16working his way down towards
00:53:18the Ascari curve is a good place for him to
00:53:20overtake, to slipstream down here,
00:53:22depending on just how much downforce they're running
00:53:24on that B.A.R.
00:53:26Pulling out, but he's not going to have a look this time,
00:53:28I don't think. We'll maybe have a look at him,
00:53:30but he's very close. Have a look as he gets down
00:53:32towards the Parabolica. Schumacher
00:53:34of course is slightly pulling away. We were led
00:53:36to believe they were on a two-stop
00:53:38strategy because of the tyre degradation.
00:53:40Now that means they would run
00:53:42less fuel, which means Michael may well
00:53:44have to go in for more fuel
00:53:46and tyres, which he may
00:53:48not need that desperately, but he's got to get
00:53:50a lead of more than 3.8 seconds
00:53:52before he goes in.
00:53:54Rostov is best finished
00:53:56this year fifth in Montreal.
00:53:59So on pace to eclipse
00:54:01that, and it would certainly be a bright spot
00:54:03in Aero's season, which started out incredibly
00:54:05dismal. And you see
00:54:07there again, Zalta taking that long look
00:54:09down the straightaway and then drops in line
00:54:11here at the chicane.
00:54:13When you're up that close to front, you don't want
00:54:15to be too desperate in making that move. You've got to
00:54:17be terribly positive and just hope the guy in front
00:54:19might make a little error, which will just help you
00:54:21slip through on the inside.
00:54:23If Michael Schumacher's on a two-stop
00:54:25strategy, he'll be in within
00:54:27the next three laps, one assumes.
00:54:29For Rostov, and really
00:54:31sliding across the entry to that chicane.
00:54:33He's pulling out now, is he going to have a look at him?
00:54:35Yes, he's very, very close to him.
00:54:37This is not the same
00:54:39move, incidentally. No, that's the
00:54:41Minardi. Did the Minardi just
00:54:43pass? Alessi, or
00:54:45is that Alessi moving up?
00:54:51Well, it's neither,
00:54:53of course, it's the sampler, it's not Alessi.
00:54:58But now to see
00:55:00Genet and Mazzucani in the thick
00:55:02of things, that's Mika Salo
00:55:04there behind
00:55:06Marc Genet, and they are
00:55:08contesting eighth place.
00:55:10Salo, actually,
00:55:12I thought had lost a minute at the start.
00:55:14Somehow, he's showing on the screen to be up there,
00:55:16but he lost a lot of time in that pit stop,
00:55:18didn't he?
00:55:22They may well, of course, have got
00:55:24Salo out within the lap now,
00:55:27Look at this, here he goes down the inside, coming
00:55:29into the first chicane, goes Zonta.
00:55:31He's got him clean and fairly
00:55:33this time in the brake, brake dust coming
00:55:35off. Nice move, be careful, don't overdo it,
00:55:37Ricciardo, you did overdo it.
00:55:39No, no, don't touch. We don't need any more
00:55:41cars out of this race, but he gets the thrust
00:55:43coming out into the Curva Grande. He's got
00:55:45the inside line to the Curva Grande.
00:55:47Now let's just see what Verstappen can do about him
00:55:49under braking for the second chicane.
00:55:51What a bold move.
00:55:53But Zonta's taking
00:55:55the inside line to say, no, sir, you're not going to get
00:55:57down the inside of me this time.
00:55:59Now that should clear Zonta to get
00:56:01away from Verstappen, but a very
00:56:03good bit of moving, but he just
00:56:05overcooked it on the brakes. Remember
00:56:07that they're running such low downforce
00:56:09on these cars that they are very
00:56:11difficult to stop. The braking distances
00:56:13are somewhat or majorly different
00:56:15to when you're running a high downforce car.
00:56:19Zonta also looking for his best finish of the season
00:56:21and Derek, here's an update from the paddock.
00:56:23Heinz-Harold Frentzen complaining of a sore knee
00:56:25and that appears
00:56:27to be the only injury
00:56:29among the drivers involved in that incident.
00:56:31Peter De La Rosa has come back
00:56:33and driven back
00:56:35to the garages
00:56:37and he is okay, giving interviews
00:56:39to the press, and he is all right.
00:56:41We did see, and you may have seen
00:56:43on the feed, on the video feed,
00:56:45the track
00:56:47medical crews working on someone
00:56:49just over the fence on a stretcher
00:56:51vigorously, and it was confirmed
00:56:53that that was a track marshal.
00:56:55One of the corner marshals
00:56:57that was being given medical
00:56:59assistance at the site of the accident.
00:57:01It was not one of the drivers involved.
00:57:03They are all okay, and that is
00:57:05certainly good news. Well, it's very sad
00:57:07for the fire marshal, but I just have
00:57:09to tell you just how incredibly
00:57:11well built these Formula 1 cars
00:57:13are these days. I mean, you saw that accident.
00:57:15All those cars involved, bouncing off
00:57:17one another, wheels flying everywhere, and
00:57:19nobody is hurt more than a bruised knee
00:57:21as far as the drivers are concerned.
00:57:23They really have done a remarkable job
00:57:25in Formula 1 in safety.
00:57:27I just wish other classes of racing
00:57:29in the world would follow suit and be a lot safer in it.
00:57:31It would take a lot from
00:57:33Formula 1 safety developments, but it does
00:57:35cost money. I think it also talks
00:57:37to the fitness of these drivers
00:57:39to withstand
00:57:41the kind of impact loading
00:57:43and flip of De La Rosa's was just
00:57:45unbelievable. Yes, you couldn't
00:57:47count the number of barrel rolls and upside-downs
00:57:49and whoopsie-doosies through there.
00:57:51All right, activity
00:57:53for VAR, for Zonta.
00:57:55And so
00:57:57the drivers that are on the two-stopper
00:57:59are getting set to come in.
00:58:01For lap 22, these pit stops
00:58:03might have come earlier, but for the number of
00:58:05caution laps, and we're
00:58:07estimating these cars would use approximately
00:58:0950% of the fuel on a caution lap that they would
00:58:11use on a green flag
00:58:13lap, so that might extend the fuel window somewhat.
00:58:15Well, it might extend it up
00:58:17to being a one-stopper, because
00:58:19at 31, which is only 9
00:58:21laps or 10 laps from now,
00:58:23they would happily come in on a one-stop
00:58:25strategy. Let's remember
00:58:27that Minardi is also
00:58:29an Italian team, as is Ferrari, and the
00:58:31Minardis are not last, and we say
00:58:33that with all respect, due
00:58:35to the effort that Minardi puts into
00:58:37Formula 1,
00:58:39they have no points this year, but
00:58:41much the way today has gone so far, anything's
00:58:43possible. Absolutely, B.A.R.
00:58:45is setting up here, looks like
00:58:47it has to be for Zonta, of course,
00:58:49but Michael Schumacher is just easing
00:58:51away from Mika Hakkinen, as we mentioned
00:58:53earlier. The McLarens haven't been that
00:58:55happy this weekend. They haven't had the
00:58:57handling hasn't been there, and they
00:58:59are meant to be running this new
00:59:01development engine. It has a
00:59:03little bit more power.
00:59:07An overtaking going on there further down the field
00:59:09with one of the Benettons slipping by.
00:59:11Alexander Wirtz.
00:59:19Further up the field, of course, with the
00:59:21fair old dice going on with Ralf Schumacher
00:59:23and Giancarlo Fisichella.
00:59:25Fisichella was well up there and seemed to
00:59:27drop back at the beginning and looked like he might
00:59:29have been having some selection problems with the gears
00:59:31and he got it all going again, but he did
00:59:33seem to be drifting back quite dramatically
00:59:35earlier on. Now this is Wirtz
00:59:37and Mika Salo
00:59:39battling. And the minorities
00:59:41right behind them.
00:59:45So this would be for 7th place.
00:59:47Here comes Zonta.
00:59:51He's obviously on a two-stop strategy
00:59:53or it's a very short two-stop strategy
00:59:55coming in this early.
00:59:57Unless he has a problem.
00:59:59Ooh!
01:00:07Good stop. What a great stop.
01:00:09So I
01:00:11guess he'll be on a two-stop or
01:00:13lighter fuel load for the second stint.
01:00:18He'll be behind that pair. He'll be behind
01:00:20that pair as he comes up,
01:00:22that's for sure, as they're headed through
01:00:24the Kirby Grander right now.
01:00:26Interesting battle here in that neither of these
01:00:28drivers will be in Formula One next year.
01:00:30Wirtz will be McLaren's test driver
01:00:32and Salo goes to test for Toyota
01:00:34who will enter the sport and
01:00:36compete in 2002.
01:00:38We'll be right back.
01:00:42Welcome back to the
01:00:44Italian Grand Prix at Monza
01:00:46where Michael Schumacher leads
01:00:48Mika Haakonen now by over
01:00:50six seconds.
01:00:52Two weeks from today
01:00:54we'll all be in
01:00:56Indianapolis and our coverage begins
01:00:58Friday. Now these are eastern
01:01:00daylight times.
01:01:02Indianapolis is on eastern standard
01:01:04time. Two hours of practice, live
01:01:06qualifying Saturday and the
01:01:08U.S. Grand Prix an hour of pre-race
01:01:10and then the race
01:01:12on Sunday,
01:01:14September 24th.
01:01:20So that's Mika Salo
01:01:22dispatching Alexander Wirtz
01:01:24and that will move Salo up the board
01:01:26to 7th. Here come the
01:01:28minorities running 9th and 10th
01:01:30Janai and Matsukane.
01:01:32They have been caught by Pedro
01:01:34Diniz and Jean Alessi.
01:01:40There's more happening back there than there is down here
01:01:42it's for certain. Haakonen having a very
01:01:44lonely race and Michael Schumacher could be very
01:01:46happy to have a lonely race just where he is
01:01:48as Haakonen goes around the Parabolica
01:01:50leads on to the big straightaway.
01:01:52Six and a half seconds between the two of them. Michael
01:01:54up to 215 miles
01:01:56an hour as he comes into the first chicane.
01:02:00Schumacher has not won since
01:02:02Canada. And that was
01:02:04six races ago.
01:02:06Haakonen has been atop the podium
01:02:08three times since then.
01:02:10Pultard and Barrichello have also
01:02:12won since Schumacher's
01:02:14last victory. Schumacher
01:02:16won here in 96 and 98.
01:02:18Do nothing about it in 99
01:02:20of course because he was off injured.
01:02:22Here he is in
01:02:24dominating form today. Ferrari
01:02:26certainly showing it's
01:02:28mettle today. They're running the low
01:02:30downforce setup that basically they ran at
01:02:32Hockenheim back in the German Grand Prix.
01:02:34Rubens Barrichello's
01:02:36doing a lot of testing and they say what a great job
01:02:38he's been doing. Zonta having
01:02:40a look down the inside of
01:02:42Is that
01:02:44Nalazi?
01:02:46Zonta
01:02:48had pitted and
01:02:50Nalazi gave him a wave
01:02:52waved him by. Gave him the
01:02:54corner. Doesn't happen
01:02:56much these days but Nalazi
01:02:58one of the
01:03:00most experienced driver out there being a real
01:03:02gentleman. Having his
01:03:04180th career start today
01:03:06Jean Nalazi. He scored
01:03:08two poles in Formula One both coming here at
01:03:10Monza but those were in the glory days.
01:03:12He was such a hero wasn't he with these Italian
01:03:14young Sicilian
01:03:16absolute hero with Ferrari
01:03:18with great great teamwork
01:03:20team running they had with
01:03:22Gerhard Berger the Ferrari team mate for so long
01:03:24and of course they both went to Benetton
01:03:26Schumacher's
01:03:28opening up a gap of 5 to 6 tenths
01:03:30of a second every lap on
01:03:32Mika. Mika has never won this race
01:03:36Last year was leading it
01:03:38spun off the track, car stalled
01:03:40and
01:03:42short end to a very difficult
01:03:44day
01:03:46what became a very difficult day because
01:03:48Eddie Irvine
01:03:50scored one point here in Monza
01:03:52last year to tie Haakon
01:03:54for the World Championship
01:03:56Despite
01:03:58Mika beating there's a bit of
01:04:00argy bargy going on there
01:04:02Zonta's trying to slip by
01:04:04Yes he's got the speed. Is he going to get by
01:04:06on the braking? Yep he does
01:04:08That's Donitz. Haakon is charged through the field
01:04:10Yes he comes up behind the two Menardis
01:04:16But the Ferrari
01:04:18overtaking manoeuvre
01:04:20or the manoeuvre of Haakon and overtaking
01:04:22the Ferrari at Spa the other day I think
01:04:24put the Italians
01:04:26although it was Ferrari I think the Italian fans
01:04:28were so taken with that incredible piece of driving
01:04:30by Haakon and they
01:04:32Haakon's gone up in their estimation. They're very very
01:04:34fond of him. You get a lot of support here
01:04:37I think you get a lot more if you finish
01:04:39your second tissue
01:04:45We're seeing a lot of the Menardis today
01:04:47as we've
01:04:49explained in prior broadcasts
01:04:51all of the 135
01:04:53countries that televised Formula
01:04:55One take the same video feed
01:04:57from the site and since
01:04:59we're in Italy it's an Italian television crew
01:05:01providing the pictures and so you're going to see
01:05:03a lot of Ferrari and Menardi because
01:05:05those are the Italian teams
01:05:07Well they certainly deserve it because they're
01:05:09running the two year old Ford engine
01:05:11and the thing is it's as heavy
01:05:13as a bulldozer going down the straight
01:05:15aerodynamically isn't too clever either
01:05:17next year they could well be running Supertec
01:05:19the Renault Supertec engine which of course
01:05:21will be a little outdated but certainly be
01:05:23a heck of a lot faster. It'll be the same engine that Zonta's
01:05:25got in his. No I'm sorry not the car
01:05:27the engine. It's the engine that the Benetton's have got
01:05:29in their car. They'll be running next year
01:05:31in the Menardis
01:05:33So here's Zonta making the pass
01:05:35on Mazzacani
01:05:39Oop oop
01:05:41That was Benet's overshooting the hole
01:05:43shooting across the chicane
01:05:45He won't get penalised for that as long as he didn't
01:05:47make up any time. Well he probably saved his tyres
01:05:49a little bit
01:05:51Here's the overtake again. Zonta goes by
01:05:53on the inside
01:05:55moves across
01:05:57Well it's going to be a long day for the
01:05:59stewards and I noted the stewards list
01:06:01on one of the fine sheets that came out Saturday
01:06:03include one Burdette Martin
01:06:05and Birdie Martin was the
01:06:07chief steward of the Trans Am here in America
01:06:09some 30 years ago
01:06:11still very active
01:06:13in the sport. He's one of the stewards here
01:06:15They have summoned
01:06:17post race
01:06:19Coulthard, Barrichello, Frentzen,
01:06:21Trulli, De La Rosa
01:06:23Irvine and Jensen Button
01:06:25for a chat. There's
01:06:27three different incidents they've summoned them for
01:06:29One assumes they're asking
01:06:31Jensen what he was being such an idiot for on the straight
01:06:33Do you know what Jensen
01:06:35Button did is so easy to do because you're sitting
01:06:37there behind the group and you start to accelerate down
01:06:39the straight thinking everybody's going to pick up speed
01:06:41you mustn't lose time. He goes down in front of you
01:06:43Typical situation that happens on freeways
01:06:45when somebody in front slows down and everybody
01:06:47bangs in the back of each other
01:06:49Not to be done in a Formula 1 car
01:06:51at 200 though. No
01:06:53Look at Zonta sweeping by
01:06:55Well so when I said
01:06:57I said the minorities were just slow
01:06:59it wasn't a complaint
01:07:01it's just kind of simple fact that they
01:07:03don't have the top end straight away speed
01:07:05Denise again
01:07:07Going again through the cross. He'll get penalized
01:07:09for that. If he does it
01:07:11more than once they're going to stop him
01:07:13and have a chat with him about it. There's a replay
01:07:15of Zonta getting a little bit deep on the brakes
01:07:17Remember the inside will not be quite
01:07:19as good and there we see
01:07:21Denise going straight across
01:07:23He's got his own lane there
01:07:25Actually he's probably getting good grip through there now
01:07:27enough people have done it. Right
01:07:29Michael Schumacher right where
01:07:31he wants to be. Out front and all
01:07:33alone. He has
01:07:35increased his advantage over
01:07:37Mika Hakkinen by about half a second a lap
01:07:39but you see he doesn't have the fastest straight away speed
01:07:41again. Egbel Hamady
01:07:43Peter Spokov at the top of the day
01:07:45the aerodynamicist and engineer for Arrows
01:07:47Very great low down
01:07:49force car and they have the fastest
01:07:51trap speed of the day. About
01:07:53223 miles an hour. That's pretty
01:07:55darn quick. We'll see plenty of that in Indianapolis
01:07:57in a couple of weeks. I'm real sure
01:07:59about that. What's your guess
01:08:01Derek for top speed at Indy?
01:08:03Well I said 220 ever since I first
01:08:05went there and I'm sure it'll be around that mark
01:08:07I'm sure it'll be 220. Now whether they
01:08:09decide to run a high down force setup
01:08:11at Indy
01:08:13which means they'll be obviously slower on the straight
01:08:15but quicker around the infield is all to be
01:08:17decided at the time so they could be a bit
01:08:19slower as Salo comes in again
01:08:21for a stop. Remember he came in very
01:08:23early on for a long long stop of over a
01:08:25minute while the pace car was out
01:08:27Yeah it's going to be a very interesting
01:08:29circuit in two weeks because of all of the
01:08:31short squirts and tight corners in the
01:08:33infield requiring maximum down force
01:08:35and then that long run from
01:08:37Indianapolis turn two all the way around
01:08:39one and up the front straight away
01:08:41where you're going to need maximum
01:08:43low down force. Just you know
01:08:45hydraulic adjustable wings would be nice
01:08:47Get the best of both worlds. We had hydraulic
01:08:49believe it or not when I first drove
01:08:51at Monza in Formula 1 or the only time
01:08:53in Formula 1 on the works Ferraris
01:08:55we had just hydraulically adjustable
01:08:57wings on the car which were banned subsequently
01:08:59and as we came up to the corners
01:09:01we would just press the button on the steering wheel
01:09:03and the wing would tilt up at the rear
01:09:05give you down force, go around the corner, it would flatten out
01:09:07The only thing is
01:09:09you had to remember to press the button before you arrived
01:09:11otherwise you'd gotten there and gotten a lot of trouble
01:09:13as the car was out of shape. Now as soon
01:09:15as I say that General Motors engineers
01:09:17invented that with the Chaparral
01:09:19Can-Am type car, that movable wing
01:09:21somebody will jump on their computer
01:09:23and email us that the Mercedes had
01:09:25speed brakes, air brakes back in
01:09:271955 and that was really
01:09:29the beginning of all that and I guess
01:09:31it was
01:09:33So Michael Schumacher has
01:09:35set fastest lap of the race once again
01:09:37as his fuel load dwindles
01:09:39We've completed 30 laps in the Italian Grand Prix
01:09:41on Fox Sports Net
01:09:44Welcome back to Fox Sports Net
01:09:46at Monza, Italy
01:09:48for the Italian Grand Prix
01:09:50Just for stopping
01:09:52the 3rd place car has just made a pit stop
01:09:54about 9 seconds for the arrows
01:09:56so that will elevate
01:09:58Ralf Schumacher 3rd, Kazukella the 4th
01:10:00Wurz and Zonta
01:10:02is the battle we're seeing right now
01:10:04as Riccardo Zonta
01:10:06remember stopped back at lap 23
01:10:08is climbing his way back up
01:10:10through the field
01:10:12He's got another stop to make, of course
01:10:14which is very unfortunate, hence he needs to go
01:10:16ahead of Wurz and steam on
01:10:20He's the only 2-stop car
01:10:22in the race
01:10:24Wonder if Ferrari had
01:10:26planned a 2-stop strategy for Schumacher
01:10:28but it's obvious now that he started
01:10:30on full tank since he's been out there
01:10:32for 32 laps, remember we ran the first
01:10:3410 or so laps under caution
01:10:36for the 2 lap 1 accidents
01:10:38and that
01:10:40may have altered the strategy
01:10:42of some of the teams that had figured
01:10:442 stops would be needed to control tyre wear
01:10:46We'll be getting
01:10:48some blue flags fairly shortly
01:10:50because there's one of the 2
01:10:52Genet comes in
01:10:54of the Minardi team
01:10:56Good run for them today, goodness
01:10:58Superb in front of the home crowd
01:11:00So far no engine problems, just pray and hope
01:11:02it continues the whole way, no traction control
01:11:04for that team
01:11:07Schumacher
01:11:09steaming past the pits
01:11:11catching up, ooh
01:11:13the blue car
01:11:15of the Prost team
01:11:17pulled well over to let Michael by
01:11:19coming into the first chicane
01:11:21That was a Lacey who's had a dismal day
01:11:23and certainly not a season
01:11:25but much to speak of
01:11:27There are the top 6, Ferrari, McLaren
01:11:29Williams, Benetton, Benetton
01:11:31BAR
01:11:33Benetton
01:11:35Sauber and Minardi
01:11:37are the only teams with 2 cars
01:11:39in this race
01:11:41For the first time they were so far
01:11:43behind the incident that they didn't get entangled
01:11:45in it, usually you get so many
01:11:47further back in the field you always get involved
01:11:49in the incident
01:11:53Here's the colour to Wurz
01:11:558.4 seconds
01:11:57We saw the gap Wurz to Zomper
01:11:59is nothing
01:12:06Now Zonta next year
01:12:08his fortunes are a bit uncertain
01:12:10he has been offered a test drive
01:12:12by McLaren
01:12:14who if they've
01:12:16actually hired Alexander Wurz as a test driver
01:12:18don't really have a seat
01:12:20available but I'm not sure quite how firm
01:12:22that deal is
01:12:24and there is
01:12:26Schumacher going past one of the Minardis
01:12:28yet again
01:12:30Hakkinen has just got by
01:12:32one of the other Minardis
01:12:34Matsukane
01:12:38and the comparison of lap times
01:12:40Hakkinen is now
01:12:42quicker than Schumacher and is eating up
01:12:44some of that distance
01:12:46hasn't had to wrestle with quite as much
01:12:48traffic as Michael has as yet
01:12:50Michael's being very cautious in traffic
01:12:52far more cautious than we've seen him before
01:12:57Mick Hagen hasn't been happy
01:12:59with the car much this weekend and has been
01:13:01so far in the race complaining of oversteer
01:13:04which of course means once those rear tyres
01:13:06start to go all you do is magnify the problem
01:13:08and they slide even more and more
01:13:10and Schumacher I believe
01:13:12is just conserving his tyres
01:13:14knowing the problems that one can have
01:13:16remember we're up to 34 laps now
01:13:18or 35 laps
01:13:20which is well inside the one stop window
01:13:24which would have been between 31 and 33
01:13:26so obviously Schumacher
01:13:28is staying out as long as he can
01:13:30as long as he can keep these good times rolling
01:13:32and come in so he's got fresh tyres
01:13:34and has to put less fuel on to complete the race
01:13:36fifth place at stake
01:13:38here comes Zonta
01:13:40he's going to be so frustrated
01:13:42because he knows he needs to get ahead here
01:13:44to get some time on the rest of the pack
01:13:46because he's got another stop to make
01:13:48there may be a little nail biting
01:13:50in the Ferrari pit because
01:13:52Barrichello's retirement
01:13:54last race was due to his running out of fuel
01:13:56as he came to the pit lane
01:13:58for service
01:14:00didn't quite calculate it right
01:14:02and Rubens ran out of fuel
01:14:04it's not a good thing at all to do that
01:14:06he wasn't the only car that weekend to have fuel problems
01:14:08at Spa
01:14:10of course that often happens
01:14:12fuel calculations go astray
01:14:14when the track is wet
01:14:16and the race has to be run in damp conditions
01:14:18yes
01:14:20but also here Derek, I don't think anybody really
01:14:22calculates since they don't run caution laps
01:14:24in practice
01:14:26nobody calculates fuel mileage under caution
01:14:28so
01:14:30certainly Michael has a fuel pressure warning
01:14:32on that car
01:14:34but they don't have a fuel gauge like we have
01:14:36in our road cars
01:14:38so it's really all up to Ross Brawn
01:14:40and Sean Taught to calculate
01:14:42what Schumacher's perceived
01:14:44fuel usage would be
01:14:46and try to wait as long as possible
01:14:48to bring him in
01:14:50I wonder how much longer they'll leave him out
01:14:52because they just can't afford to gamble away
01:14:54ten points
01:14:56is that Zonta in the pits again?
01:14:58yes, this would be his second stop
01:15:00they decided it's better to get him out of the way of Wurtz
01:15:02get this fuel stop done and then get him on his way
01:15:04with a clear road
01:15:06very wise bit of work there
01:15:08so he ran 23 laps on his first tank
01:15:10and just 14
01:15:12on the second
01:15:16meanwhile Ferrari and several of the others
01:15:18and Hackett and McLaren have not been in at all
01:15:20but they'll be in shortly I feel sure
01:15:26Schumacher using all the road
01:15:28last lap
01:15:30he got the quickest lap of the race
01:15:32so he's still pressing on
01:15:34pulling down on Micasalo now
01:15:40Ferrari has won
01:15:42the Italian Grand Prix 12 times
01:15:44McLaren 7, Lotus 5
01:15:46and Williams 5
01:15:50remember that Schumacher has won this race twice
01:15:52and Hockenheim has not
01:15:54scored in the Italian Grand Prix
01:16:06Micasalo and
01:16:08moves aside
01:16:10I can't believe it, Ferrari actually had 6
01:16:121-2 victories here at Monza
01:16:14that's quite something isn't it?
01:16:16that's amazing
01:16:18and in fact
01:16:20Dirk they had a 1-2-3
01:16:22victory of Phil Hill
01:16:24in 1960
01:16:26not only the first American to win a world championship
01:16:28Grand Prix but the last driver to win
01:16:30an F1 race in a front engine
01:16:32car
01:16:34Ferrari finished 1, 2, 3 and 5
01:16:36on Tripsworth 5th
01:16:38in that race in 1960
01:16:42Pedro Diniz brings his Sauber in for attention
01:16:46he is the 8th place car
01:16:48as he enters pit lane
01:16:521, 2, 3
01:17:0011 and a half second stop
01:17:02is a bit long
01:17:06but he's back out so it's Schumacher
01:17:08Hockenheim
01:17:12and should they finish in this order
01:17:141, 2 it would be the first time since San Marino
01:17:16the third race of the season
01:17:18that there's been a 1, 2 Schumacher Hockenheim
01:17:20finish
01:17:22look at Schumacher's last three laps
01:17:24he's really turning it on towards the end of this stint
01:17:26he knows his rubber can handle it
01:17:28so he's really
01:17:30that is not the way to take the chicane
01:17:32puts a lot of dirt on the road
01:17:34for the others
01:17:36Genet
01:17:38looks like he may have been looking
01:17:40in his mirrors too much as he came in there
01:17:42wondering where the others were and that was it
01:17:44because he saw probably a blue flag, Hockenheim coming behind
01:17:46wanted to get out of his way
01:17:48and he certainly did
01:17:50but that would have delayed Mika somewhat there
01:17:52and there's activity at Ferrari, Derek
01:17:54looks like at 39 laps
01:17:56they'll bring Michael in for his one stop
01:17:58as you said just now
01:18:00he's turning the
01:18:02the wick up a little bit, trying to get some really quick laps in
01:18:04much quicker than Mika these last few laps
01:18:06so that he can go in
01:18:08sort of making the point
01:18:10and knowing that the tyres will last
01:18:12because obviously he is conserving tyres
01:18:14here he comes
01:18:16they'll time the fuel flow
01:18:18so he gets in just enough
01:18:20speed limit as he comes up
01:18:24only
01:18:2614 to go
01:18:28they may finish fueling
01:18:30before the tyres
01:18:32just about the same time
01:18:34superb stop by Ferrari
01:18:40here he comes
01:18:42so the lead changes hands
01:18:44for the first time today
01:18:46on Schumacher's pitstop, Mika Hockenheim
01:18:48leader in the world championship
01:18:50and trying to three-peat
01:18:52as the world driving champion
01:18:54goes into the lead for the first time today
01:19:02superb piece of driving by these two drivers
01:19:04one has to say
01:19:06Schumacher and Mika Hockenheim
01:19:08absolutely immaculate driving
01:19:10after the incidents at the beginning
01:19:12so Hockenheim has yet to make his
01:19:14pitstop. Schumacher has
01:19:16made his. Ralf Schumacher sits third
01:19:18and Fisichello fourth. You're watching Formula
01:19:20One on Fox Sportsnet
01:19:24Welcome back to Monza and the
01:19:2651st Italian Grand Prix
01:19:28the 50th to be contested
01:19:30at this
01:19:32most historic of Formula One circuits
01:19:36lap one incidents
01:19:38took out of this race. Barrichello
01:19:40Coulthard, Trulli, Frentzen
01:19:42de la Rosa, Irvine
01:19:44and Herbert
01:19:46with Nick Heidfeldt going by the wayside
01:19:48soon thereafter. Jacques Villeneuve
01:19:50engine problems also out of the race
01:19:52Jensen Button
01:19:54almost ran over the field on the restart
01:19:56bounced off the retaining
01:19:58wall and out
01:20:00one of the interesting parts of this track
01:20:02race that's going on at the moment is the
01:20:04battle actually between Ralf Schumacher in third place
01:20:06and Fisichello in fourth
01:20:08so it's got to come in and stop
01:20:10but there's not very much of a gap between them
01:20:12at this time. So it's going to be interesting
01:20:14to see just how
01:20:16this turns out with their pitstops
01:20:18when they've had their pitstops
01:20:2213.6 seconds
01:20:24up with 12 laps
01:20:26to go
01:20:28McLaren Mercedes
01:20:30trying to
01:20:32run out that tank of fuel as much
01:20:34as possible so the number of laps
01:20:36they will need to add fuel for him to run
01:20:38he'll be as small as possible
01:20:40saving time on that pitstop
01:20:44they just don't dare run him out of fuel
01:20:46they certainly dare
01:20:48look at Mika
01:20:50you see him getting the opposite lock on as he came out of the
01:20:52Scari chicane
01:20:54very very fast chicane nonetheless
01:20:56come out there at 135 miles
01:20:58an hour
01:21:02going through the Parabolica about 115
01:21:06had an email question Derek
01:21:08one of our viewers
01:21:10about the numbers on these cars
01:21:12and why they're so hard to read
01:21:14with the transponders used for scoring
01:21:16you no longer have scores
01:21:18sitting up in a stand trying to identify the car by number
01:21:20drivers helmet becomes the primary
01:21:22means of identification and usually the numbers
01:21:24are used mainly by
01:21:26folks like us, the TV broadcasters
01:21:28and journalists and we're fairly low
01:21:30on Formula 1's priority these days
01:21:32no it should not be
01:21:34just depends how well
01:21:36McLaren can do it
01:21:38and it's vital that they get an immaculate
01:21:40stop maybe they'll adjust the car a bit
01:21:42remember at Spa they actually adjusted
01:21:44the differential on the car
01:21:46electronically they can adjust it
01:21:48so you obviously got a different sort of bias
01:21:50through the left to right rear wheels
01:21:52which enabled him to corner better
01:21:54here we go 13 seconds as he goes
01:21:56into the pits
01:21:58I think a lot of folks are
01:22:00underestimating what Haakon is up against
01:22:02this year there have been 6 drivers
01:22:04who could have won 3 consecutive
01:22:06world championships but only one
01:22:08Fangio achieved it
01:22:101954, 5 and 6
01:22:20excellent stop
01:22:22superb stop by McLaren
01:22:24he saved a second over
01:22:26there's the Ferrari and you can see the McLaren coming up
01:22:28the pit lane so they did make
01:22:30a little bit of time up there
01:22:32and Schumacher
01:22:34reassumes the lead
01:22:36as we assumed he would
01:22:42lap 1 accident one of the track side marshals
01:22:44was apparently hit with debris
01:22:46and there was certainly plenty of it flying around
01:22:48and it's been taken to the Monza
01:22:50hospital
01:22:52in serious condition
01:22:54so we hope for his recovery
01:23:01and now it's Benetton's turn in the pit lane
01:23:03and it's Hertz
01:23:10good stop, what a stop
01:23:12mind you of course each stop
01:23:14is really down to how long the tyres take
01:23:16Mike as you said because the fuel is
01:23:21now we'll see whether Haakon can get a charge
01:23:23on the way he did at Spa
01:23:25and catch Michael Schumacher up
01:23:27I have to admit the whole length
01:23:29of the second coming to view at the back of the straight there
01:23:31one has to admit that
01:23:33the Ferrari does seem to have the edge this weekend
01:23:35oh dear that's not what
01:23:37Mika wanted as the Minardi
01:23:39pulls over and blocks him out
01:23:41not good at all
01:23:43then lets him go through at the Parabolica
01:23:51well you've got two drivers, Derek
01:23:53who have a chance to double their point total
01:23:55today for the entire season, Verstappen and Zonta
01:23:57should they each move up a spot
01:24:01it shows you the speed of that McLaren
01:24:03he's pulling 353km
01:24:05which is
01:24:07222mph
01:24:09as Ralf Schumacher comes in
01:24:23Ralf having to dodge
01:24:25Fisichello
01:24:27coming out, uh oh, trouble
01:24:29Fisichello waving, gesturing wildly
01:24:31the car won't
01:24:33will it just go to gear?
01:24:35he's got the wheels, the wheels are spinning at the back
01:24:37he's going to have to drop it on the road
01:24:39he says start again, start the engine again
01:24:41come on keep starting it
01:24:43oh dear, he came into the pits four
01:24:45but he got the wheels turning as you can see
01:24:47but every time
01:24:49he can't get a gear transmission I would suggest
01:24:51every time it gets a gear it stalls
01:24:55oh my goodness
01:25:01after such a fine pit he's driving
01:25:05that looks like the starter motor
01:25:07turning it over, yeah the starter motor is the one
01:25:09that's turning the wheels
01:25:11he just can't get it fired up can he
01:25:13now a little steam from the front brakes
01:25:15because he's had his foot on the brakes
01:25:17to stop it flying forward
01:25:19while the wheels are turning as well
01:25:21so he's hooking on there
01:25:23he's got it on the jack, they're going to drop it
01:25:29there it goes, there it goes
01:25:31but my goodness the old
01:25:35oh dear, oh dear
01:25:37jack it up again, put the starter motor in the back
01:25:39don't know how far up the pit lane
01:25:41they can go
01:25:43looks like they're not yet into
01:25:45Arrow's pit
01:25:49engine just doesn't sound good
01:25:53oh so frustrating
01:25:55as a guy tries to get a gear
01:25:57is he going to get it
01:25:59there he goes, he's got it
01:26:01brilliant at last
01:26:03oh dear, oh dear
01:26:05that's so sad for all that effort
01:26:09now it's restart me
01:26:11he's saying
01:26:15if you're fluent in sign language
01:26:17Schumacher down the back straight
01:26:19coming into the parabolic
01:26:21turn
01:26:23Hacken not in sight that time
01:26:25Hacken of course somewhat held up by
01:26:27the move by the Minardi if you remember
01:26:29under braking for the last time through the corner
01:26:31Verstappen
01:26:33what a great day he's having
01:26:35he's going to be up to
01:26:375th place next time around
01:26:39with Fisichella's problems
01:26:41I'm sorry up to
01:26:434th place
01:26:47Fisichella will drop down the board
01:26:49that was one of the Saubers that looked like
01:26:51short cutting the chicane
01:26:53not sure how much further he got
01:26:55than that, the car came through very slowly
01:27:01Arrow's next year will have
01:27:03the Peugeot in inverted
01:27:05commas
01:27:07this is the Sauber again
01:27:09going across the dirt
01:27:11he's got to get a penalty for it at some point
01:27:13he can't keep running across it
01:27:15he's doing that about every lap
01:27:17but as I said Arrow's
01:27:19will be running this new
01:27:21Asian Technologies Group engine next year
01:27:23which really is the Peugeot this year
01:27:25having had a dismal, miserable time
01:27:27with Prost
01:27:29I don't know if that's a step forward for Walker-Scholl
01:27:31but maybe it will be a step forward with a partnership
01:27:33with Peugeot or with that group
01:27:37look at the speed he has
01:27:43not good on very high downforce circuits
01:27:45oh my goodness on these low downforce circuits
01:27:47they really do work
01:27:49well that's why Indy's going to be so interesting
01:27:51because you'd expect that car to be very slow
01:27:53through the infield and then be a rocket around the oval
01:27:55can't wait for two weeks time
01:27:57in the US Grand Prix
01:27:59but we have 8 laps to go here at Monza
01:28:01Michael Schumacher leading Mika Hakkinen
01:28:03Ralph Schumacher and Jos Verstappen
01:28:07welcome back to Monza in the Italian Grand Prix
01:28:09the battle shaping up on the track
01:28:11is going to be Riccardo Zonta and Alex Wurtz
01:28:13in 5th place
01:28:15there's a look at the leaders lap times
01:28:17and Mika Hakkinen is quicker than Schumacher
01:28:19at this stage of the race
01:28:21but he's going to have to erase
01:28:23a deficit of more than 10 seconds
01:28:27well another little quote from the paddock
01:28:29David Cordard saying that
01:28:31Frentzen's driving like an absolute idiot
01:28:33at the moment, like a maniac
01:28:35and we saw some of Frentzen's driving at
01:28:37Spa in practice
01:28:39nearly putting David off the road
01:28:41even qualifying yesterday
01:28:43slowing Cordard down in the chicane
01:28:45and then today it's pretty obvious that
01:28:47Frentzen was the instigator
01:28:49of the incident at the second chicane
01:28:51and he has said as much Derek
01:28:53he said that he misjudged his braking point
01:28:55coming into the corner
01:28:57and that was the reason why his car got out of shape
01:28:59contacted Rubens
01:29:01Rubens has been very vocal
01:29:03in his displeasure with Frentzen's tactic
01:29:05Jarno Trulli has stood silent
01:29:07on the matter
01:29:09and that's exactly what David said
01:29:11very tough day
01:29:13for all five drivers involved
01:29:15and taken out of the race
01:29:17in that lap one crash
01:29:19give you one more look at it here
01:29:21that's Frentzen sideways
01:29:23Trulli to the left
01:29:25Barrichello and Coulthard
01:29:27and eventually
01:29:29Dolorosa really wasn't that far
01:29:31behind these cars and might have missed it
01:29:33but he caught a wheel
01:29:35that might have come off one of these Jordans
01:29:37and bounced up and over
01:29:39there goes his wing
01:29:41and here he comes into the picture
01:29:43and how he didn't land on the top of Barrichello
01:29:45we will never know
01:29:47and the other miracle of all this
01:29:49is the fact that there was no fire
01:29:51that is the outstanding thing of modern day racing
01:29:53that they seem to have
01:29:55completely overwhelmingly come
01:29:57absolutely amazing the way fire has been negated
01:29:59let's hope a hundred percent
01:30:01but one can never say that
01:30:03and once again
01:30:05the drivers involved
01:30:07one of the trackside marshals though was injured
01:30:09and was told fairly seriously
01:30:11he's been removed to the local hospital
01:30:13and that is the latest update we have
01:30:15Ralph locking up his brakes
01:30:17as Verstappen is giving him
01:30:19a fairly hard time there
01:30:23now that gap is down to about five seconds
01:30:25between them for third and fourth
01:30:27Mika Hakkinen pulled a few tenths
01:30:29off Michael Schumacher that lap
01:30:31but I think with so few laps to go
01:30:33Schumacher is now
01:30:35biding his time, Ralph again locking up that inside tyre
01:30:37of course it is in the unloaded tyre
01:30:39Hakkinen makes no bones
01:30:41about overtaking a Menardie this time
01:30:43it is the other Menardie I believe
01:30:45nonetheless he goes through in positive terms
01:30:51well what this result would do is erase
01:30:53the effect of Belgium
01:30:55where Hakkinen
01:30:57and Schumacher finished 1-2
01:30:59and it would bring
01:31:01the drivers championship
01:31:03to within two points once again
01:31:07well at least it keeps it really exciting
01:31:09going into the last three races
01:31:11with Indianapolis, Malaysia and Japan
01:31:13five laps to go
01:31:15and the workload really increases on the teams
01:31:17as this is the last drive two race
01:31:19the last European race of the year
01:31:21the rest are flyaways
01:31:23United States, Japan and Malaysia
01:31:25so there once again
01:31:27Hakkinen is quicker
01:31:29than Schumacher
01:31:31eating into that advantage
01:31:33at five laps to go
01:31:35with Ralph Schumacher third for Williams
01:31:37then Arrows, Benetton and B.A.R.
01:31:39six different constructors
01:31:41in the points
01:31:43then the two Sauers, the two Menardies
01:31:45Fisichella after that dreadful pitstop
01:31:47and Jean Alessi
01:31:49who has had a nice tour of Monza today
01:31:51but unfortunately not much
01:31:53that you could call a race
01:31:55there's Hakkinen coming to view
01:31:57he has picked up quite a bit of time on Michael
01:31:59but with so few laps, five laps to go
01:32:01it's hardly likely he's going to catch him
01:32:03unless Schumacher has a problem
01:32:05one has to make a comment about the circuit
01:32:07they put these new chicanes in
01:32:09but they've actually made the curving much smoother
01:32:11and everybody says oh that's because of Ferrari
01:32:13because Ferrari like a very very smooth circuit
01:32:15and the McLaren works well
01:32:17on a bumpy curved circuit
01:32:19and the Ferrari doesn't
01:32:21instigated the changes in the chicanes
01:32:23but for McLaren I reckon they've lost four tenths
01:32:25of a second
01:32:27and that makes all the difference
01:32:29Hakkinen would have been on pole
01:32:31but for those four tenths
01:32:33and weren't Trulli's comments after qualifying
01:32:35to Peter prophetic
01:32:37when he talked about how it would be
01:32:39at the chicanes on the first lap
01:32:41mind you it was the second chicane that created it
01:32:43not the first but of course
01:32:45I would have thought the first was much tighter
01:32:47because it seemed so much slower
01:32:51it destroys the drivers driving skills
01:32:53in my opinion
01:32:55there's a lot of stress in the car
01:32:57there's nothing like a good old smooth
01:32:59safety reasons as we saw it really work today
01:33:01yes
01:33:03and you can't say
01:33:05you're right Derek
01:33:07everybody was talking about the first chicane
01:33:09as a possible problem
01:33:11because of the short distance between the start and the first chicane
01:33:13but no the field had plenty of time
01:33:15to get themselves sorted out before coming into the second chicane
01:33:17and no that's where the problem was
01:33:19where you would have thought
01:33:21they went through the first chicane one line of stern
01:33:23there wouldn't have been a schmuzzle at the second one
01:33:25Presetti Irvine never got second chicane
01:33:27he did go out at the first one
01:33:29so Schumacher
01:33:31trying to hold on to a seven second lead
01:33:33for stopping and work
01:33:35you see seven seconds apart
01:33:37and now Hakkinen
01:33:39having a little trouble here
01:33:41with the back marker
01:33:43blue flags waving
01:33:45as that
01:33:47Sauber
01:33:49put aside here
01:33:51and Hakkinen
01:33:53takes the inside line
01:33:55so he's set fastest lap of the race
01:33:57but will it be enough
01:33:59Michael Schumacher leads from Mika Hakkinen
01:34:01Ralph Schumacher and Joss Verstappen
01:34:03you're watching the Italian Grand Prix
01:34:05on Fox Sports Net
01:34:09Welcome back to Monza
01:34:11as the laps wind down
01:34:1353 make up the race today
01:34:15Schumacher
01:34:17there's the Ferrari
01:34:19there's the McLaren
01:34:21but in this championship
01:34:23it's been five races since Schumacher
01:34:25has been atop the podium
01:34:27even though Barrichello has a win in that time
01:34:29it's Michael that's fighting Hakkinen
01:34:31for this drivers championship
01:34:33and Mika has won three times since Michael
01:34:35was last to winner
01:34:37I'd just love to see
01:34:39how Barrichello was to do
01:34:41in this field today
01:34:45Schumacher wins, he will tie Ayrton Senna
01:34:47for second on the all time
01:34:49Formula 1 win list
01:34:5310 behind the great Professor Prost
01:34:55you can hear the old
01:34:57sirens going and the fans
01:34:59starting to get a bit worked up
01:35:01at this Ferrari V3
01:35:09Hakkinen continues to lower the fastest lap standard
01:35:15there you see him just into view
01:35:19must be frustrating Derek
01:35:21he's got it down to 5.5, he can see the Ferrari
01:35:23so close and yet so far
01:35:25but he knows he can do very little about it
01:35:27and Michael
01:35:29sitting in there going
01:35:33the podium finishers
01:35:35which right now could include
01:35:37the brother Schumacher
01:35:41final lap, it's going to be a great day
01:35:43for Jas Verstappen and for Arrows
01:35:45with a fourth, their best of the season
01:35:47Alex Wurz
01:35:49in position to pick up two points
01:35:53which will be the only two
01:35:55he's had this year
01:35:59and Riccardo Zonta
01:36:03this is Wurz's first finish
01:36:05in the points this year and also
01:36:07the second for Zonta
01:36:09he'll double his point total
01:36:13if he wins today
01:36:17it's Michael Schumacher's third victory here
01:36:19Piquet had four victories here
01:36:21Alan Prost three, Ronnie Peterson three
01:36:23the great Sterling Moss and the great Juan Manuel Fangio
01:36:25both had three as well
01:36:27but this will be brilliant for Schumacher
01:36:29brilliant for Ferrari and great for the World Championship
01:36:31to see this man have victory here
01:36:35and you hear the horns in the background
01:36:37as the Tofosi tune up
01:36:39ready to celebrate
01:36:41Ferrari victory on Italian soil
01:36:43well I hope we get some of that noise
01:36:45when we get to Indianapolis Mike
01:36:47I hope we can get some real
01:36:49I know a lot of Ferrari club people are going to it
01:36:51I hope we get tremendous Ferrari fans
01:36:53and of course McLaren fans as well
01:36:59Ralph Schumacher third
01:37:01Verstappen
01:37:03where's Verstappen and Wurz, they were nose to tail
01:37:05a big weave toward the crew
01:37:07to acknowledge them
01:37:09Schumacher the winner
01:37:11Mika for second
01:37:15look at that car
01:37:17where's the Verstappen-Wurz battle
01:37:19they were nose to tail
01:37:25and I'm corrected
01:37:27thank you Fisichella
01:37:29behind Verstappen
01:37:33would have been tremendous
01:37:35because they were right there earlier on in the race
01:37:37well thank you, explain why they weren't showing it then
01:37:39here they come
01:37:41here they come
01:37:43Wurz being pushed by Fisichella
01:37:45sorry Verstappen, but I wonder if Verstappen
01:37:47knows the situation
01:37:49Fisichella is a lap down after that dreadful pit stop
01:37:51and Verstappen is going to come home
01:37:53and finish fourth
01:37:57Fisichella 11th as you see
01:37:59great finish for Arrows
01:38:01remember of course that Fisichella is Italian
01:38:03as we ride with him
01:38:07good for Ferrari
01:38:09a superb piece of engineering there
01:38:11to keep that car up together
01:38:13and of course the more disasters you have
01:38:15over the previous races
01:38:17the more critical, the more sort of nervous
01:38:19you become every race
01:38:21wondering if it's really going to work this time
01:38:27this is Ferrari's 13th victory at Monza
01:38:29the home ground of Ferrari
01:38:31somebody said the spiritual home of Ferrari
01:38:33from Paul the checkered flag
01:38:35Schumacher surrendered the lead
01:38:37only when he made his pit stop
01:38:39and took it back when Hockenden
01:38:41entered the pit lane
01:38:43there's some happy fans there
01:38:47they're pretty enthusiastic out there
01:38:49they have to be
01:38:51this is really the
01:38:53whole total sport for Italy
01:38:55along with soccer
01:38:57there's not much else that they don't adore
01:39:03Ferrari
01:39:09needs to be pure speculation
01:39:11he says the only way you can find out who the best driver is
01:39:13is to put the two drivers in identical cars
01:39:15and since that's not going to happen with he and Hockenden
01:39:17he says it's not important
01:39:19what the trend looks like
01:39:21the only important thing is that we are still
01:39:236 points, now 2 points behind Mika
01:39:25and going into today
01:39:27there's still 40 points to score
01:39:29so everything is open
01:39:31and in this sport everything can change
01:39:33from one race to the other
01:39:35everything is still possible for us
01:39:37and as long as it is
01:39:39we will not give up and we will work
01:39:41even harder, they have done that today
01:39:43in fine fashion
01:39:45look at those fans pouring down the track
01:39:47Mika Hockenden must be very satisfied
01:39:49really with his drive
01:39:51he wasn't happy with the car all weekend
01:39:53had the misfire during qualifying
01:39:55and had this bad handling
01:39:57wasn't at all happy with it
01:39:59never have been up at the same speed
01:40:01as the Ferrari, another excellent job
01:40:03by him, but one has to salute Ferrari
01:40:05and of course Michael Schumacher
01:40:07doing a superb job
01:40:09there are the new points that show Michael Schumacher
01:40:11within 2 points
01:40:13of Mika Hockenden
01:40:15Michael won here
01:40:17in 96 and 98
01:40:19missed the races
01:40:21in 94 and of course
01:40:2399 due to injury
01:40:25and was punted out of the lead by Damon Hill in 1995
01:40:27that was a nice gesture
01:40:29there I think by Mika Hockenden
01:40:31came down and shook Michael's hand
01:40:33that's his brother Ralph
01:40:35Michael was actually
01:40:37talking about maybe having a drive in the McLaren
01:40:39sometime, he said I know it's a better drive
01:40:41than the Ferrari
01:40:43I want to see if it drives
01:40:45as well as it looks like it does
01:40:47when we are out on the circuit
01:40:49they are happy there
01:40:51they are happy
01:40:57Mika Hockenden
01:40:59was the
01:41:01first big hug
01:41:07come back that they
01:41:09have done
01:41:11from Belgium where they were
01:41:13clearly off the McLaren pace at Spa
01:41:15they are the first 3 cars
01:41:17sitting in part
01:41:19Schumacher thought he better put his wheel
01:41:21back on if he gets into trouble
01:41:23if he doesn't
01:41:25I just love
01:41:27he gives the prancing horse on the nose
01:41:29a pat
01:41:31he clearly
01:41:33had a great car today
01:41:35they made the car
01:41:37that's really interesting
01:41:39Michael's shouldered the
01:41:41role of development driver
01:41:43for his entire tenure at Ferrari
01:41:45and yet here they found that
01:41:47the setups that Ruben worked on
01:41:49they were well rewarded
01:41:51at least Michael was

01:42:13park for May
01:42:15Ralf climbs out to congratulate
01:42:17his brother as does Mika
01:42:19there's your top 3 Ferrari
01:42:21McLaren Williams
01:42:23Arrows in 4th, Benetton in 5th
01:42:25B.A.R. in 6th, it'll take a long look
01:42:27in the history book to find 6 constructors
01:42:29in the first 6 spots
01:42:31then the 2 Saubers, the 2 Minardis
01:42:33Fisichella after that hapless
01:42:35pit stop and John Lacey
01:42:39so Hockenden leads the points now by
01:42:41just 2 as they head for Indianapolis
01:42:43David Coulthard and Rubens Barrichello
01:42:45well back, Ralf Schumacher and
01:42:47Fisichella
01:42:49Jack Villeneuve put nothing on the board today
01:42:51nor did Jenson Button, Frentzen, nor truly
01:42:53Salo and Verstappen
01:42:55moves up now with 5 points
01:42:57Eddie Irvine, De La Rosa
01:42:59Zonta now with 2
01:43:01and Alex Wurz with his first 2 points of the season
01:43:03and in the constructors championship
01:43:05well it brightens up a bit there
01:43:07McLaren Mercedes 131, Ferrari 127
01:43:09Williams 34, Benetton 20

01:43:22to the podium
01:43:24well Michael Schumacher
01:43:26is certainly jubilant over this one
01:43:28can you imagine he's waited some while for this
01:43:30in front of his home crowd as it were
01:43:32an amazing piece of work by both him
01:43:34and Hockenden and of course young
01:43:36Ralf Schumacher in the Williams
01:43:38yet again
01:43:40third time this year
01:43:42the Schumacher brothers have been together on the podium

01:46:48but as usual, atop the podium, it will be Champagne.
01:46:59Do you think they love it or what?
01:47:01Michael is dousing his crew below.
01:47:10And Mika Hakkinen having his fair share of pouring it down Michael's neck,
01:47:13but Michael says, I want it on the other side, right where my mouth is.
01:47:18Genuine, really genuine enthusiasm today.
01:47:23Third time we've seen the Schumacher brothers there this year on the podium together.
01:47:32If you're going to win, Monza is the place to win if you're a Ferrari driver.
01:47:36Real enthusiasm.
01:47:38I must say, Michael does show a special emotion when he's won a race,
01:47:42particularly when you haven't won one for a while,
01:47:44and your brother's standing next to you.
01:47:46Yes, very special.
01:47:48And very gracious.
01:47:49As Michael hopped out of the car,
01:47:50Mika was the first to come over and shake his hand and congratulate him.
01:47:54Michael doesn't want to leave that podium, he wants it for himself today.
01:47:57And look at these folks.
01:47:58They don't want him to leave.
01:47:59They're going to be there for hours.
01:48:01You won't be getting out of Monza for ages yet.
01:48:03Forget that early flight home.
01:48:05He said, I'm staying here, I love it.
01:48:07I have to say, he is the king.
01:48:09He is today, and we will hear from the podium finishers
01:48:13at the Unilateral Press Conference in just a bit here, so stay with us.
01:48:18Michael Schumacher has won the Italian Grand Prix.
01:48:21You're watching Formula One on Fox Sportsnet.
01:48:29At Monza, Italy, some sad news.
01:48:31The trackside crews reacting to the news.
01:48:34The 31-year-old fire marshal was hit by flying debris in the Lap 1 accident,
01:48:39went into cardiac arrest, was taken to Monza Hospital,
01:48:42where he has died from his injuries.
01:48:45So our thoughts are with all those who come and volunteer at all these races.
01:48:50And let's go to the Unilateral Press Conference.
01:48:53Three finishing drivers at the 2000 Italian Grand Prix.
01:48:57It's Michael Schumacher, Mika Hakkinen, and Ralf Schumacher.
01:49:00Michael, many, many congratulations.
01:49:02It's your sixth win of the season, but you've not had one for six races.
01:49:04You've done it in front of your home fans, the Tifosi.
01:49:06You must be delighted.
01:49:08Yeah, I think delighted is the wrong word.
01:49:10I have no vocabulary for anything higher than that.
01:49:15I'm sorry, but I'm just happy.
01:49:18I'm just exhausted.
01:49:21Yeah.
01:49:23I'm not sure if you're aware, but this is your 41st victory,
01:49:26which puts you at equal second all-time with Ayrton Senna.
01:49:29Do those records mean a lot to you?
01:49:31Yes, it does mean a lot to me.
01:49:36Sorry.
01:49:51Thanks, Michael.
01:49:53Mika, for the last two races,
01:49:55Michael's been, I think, magnanimous enough to admit that,
01:49:58on the day, you had the faster car, the McLaren.
01:50:00Do you think today that Ferrari was just the faster car?
01:50:04Can we have a break?
01:50:11Go to Ralf. Ralf can continue.
01:50:16Okay, Ralf.
01:50:18Ralf, you're unique of the three drivers we have here,
01:50:20because you actually saw that very big second chicane incident.
01:50:24Can you perhaps talk us through how you saw it
01:50:26and how you managed to avoid it?
01:50:28Well, basically, I just saw a lot of dust coming out
01:50:31and car parts flying around,
01:50:33and Jack and me managed somehow to go around,
01:50:36but it looked really terrible.
01:50:39I mean, someone was hurted, as we saw,
01:50:42but I don't know who it was.
01:50:44Talking back to your own race again,
01:50:46when you actually were driving long,
01:50:48you saw Ricciardo, Zonta and Jos Verstappen drive past you.
01:50:51Do you think, oh, dear, I'm on the wrong strategy?
01:50:54Well, we always knew that someone would like the strategy,
01:50:58but, you know, as Monza is on the longer strategy,
01:51:01you usually have the upper hand,
01:51:03and we were quicker than Verstappen at the end of the day,
01:51:07and I knew that we could be quicker than Zonta,
01:51:09so I didn't worry too much.
01:51:12Back to Mika now.
01:51:14Ladies and gentlemen, via Perseverance's live television.
01:51:17Mika, as I said before, do you think this day for the Ferrari
01:51:20was the faster car compared to McLaren?
01:51:22I'm sorry? Can I ask it?
01:51:24Do you believe today that Michael had the faster car?
01:51:27He said in the last couple of races that you had the faster car.
01:51:31A little bit, yes.
01:51:33Not much, but enough.
01:51:37Now, when you came out from the pit stop,
01:51:40you actually then went, despite the fact it was very unlikely
01:51:42you were going to be able to catch up, Michael,
01:51:43you actually went and put in a series of very quick laps,
01:51:45including the fastest lap of all.
01:51:47Why was that?
01:51:48Well, we made some modifications during pit stop,
01:51:51and it made the balance of the car better,
01:51:53but not enough, obviously, and the gap was too much for Michael,
01:51:56so it was impossible really to catch him,
01:52:00and also back markers was...
01:52:03A couple of Minardis was quite a pain, you know,
01:52:06they didn't let overtake so easily,
01:52:08so I lost maybe two, three seconds because of that,
01:52:10but at the end of the day, that is not an excuse or anything,
01:52:14but I believe that Michael did not have no reason to anymore
01:52:19to push maximum anymore at that time,
01:52:21so that was the situation.
01:52:26Michael, are you okay to go on?
01:52:28Yes.
01:52:29You are obviously very emotional about this.
01:52:31Why does this mean so much to you?
01:52:34Ask me another question, please.
01:52:36Perhaps we should just go straight to the languages for the...
01:52:39Thank you very much for everybody, guys.
01:52:40Perhaps, Joe, you can use something in German, please, Michael.
01:52:43I think to understand Michael's emotion,
01:52:45you have to appreciate he was 20 points in the lead of the World Championship,
01:52:48he hasn't won a race for six races,
01:52:50he's in front of this Japosi alongside his brother.
01:52:53I mean, amazing emotion.
01:52:55We'll be right back.
01:52:56De Monza to wrap things up.
01:52:57You're watching Formula 1 on Fox Sportsnet.
01:53:03In two weeks, we'll be at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway
01:53:06as they welcome Formula 1 for the very first time.
01:53:10And Fox Sportsnet will have live coverage
01:53:13of Friday practice at noon and 2 p.m.
01:53:16Live coverage of qualifying Saturday, 2 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time.
01:53:20And on race day,
01:53:23the U.S. Grand Prix at 1 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time,
01:53:26except 5 p.m. Central in Chicago,
01:53:296 p.m. Eastern in Florida and New York.
01:53:31And Midwest Sports Channel will air the U.S. Grand Prix
01:53:34at 4 p.m. Central Daylight Time.
01:53:36So we'll see you then.
01:53:39Well, last year, Mika Hakkinen spun off the track in the lead
01:53:42and collapsed emotionally at trackside.
01:53:45This year, Michael Schumacher wins.
01:53:47Breaks down in the press conference.
01:53:49Last year's winner, Frentzen, is this year's GOAT
01:53:52in the second chicane of the first lap.
01:53:56This was, of course, the first chicane.
01:53:57This is the second chicane.
01:53:58You see De La Rosa sailing by on the side of his car,
01:54:02caused by Heinz Frentzen.
01:54:04Very, very silly move,
01:54:05but one of those things that happens at these first
01:54:07or second corner incidents when into a chicane.
01:54:12Talk about silly moves.
01:54:13Here comes Button. Full steam ahead.
01:54:15At the front of the pack, it's slowed,
01:54:17and he bounces off the guardrail and is out of the race.
01:54:20As is Jacques Villeneuve as his engine expires,
01:54:22or he certainly said it stopped,
01:54:24but it does when it blows up.
01:54:27Good bit of overtaking, which didn't quite come off there,
01:54:30but it did there as Zonta goes by Verstappen.
01:54:33Superb driving by Zonta.
01:54:35Actually, both drivers had a tremendous race.
01:54:39Michael Schumacher trying to get by one of the Minardis,
01:54:42and he does, but he's playing it very cool today.
01:54:44Michael needed those points so desperately.
01:54:47Super pit stops by the Ferrari crew.
01:54:52And as Haakonen comes in for his stop,
01:54:54Schumacher goes back to the lead and is never headed.
01:54:57We will see you in two weeks
01:54:58at the United States Grand Prix at Indianapolis.
01:55:00For Derek Bell and Peter Windsor, I'm Mike Joy.
