00:00:00In Germany, as in many European countries, young drivers grow up on go-karts, dreaming
00:00:06of having 800 more horsepower behind them.
00:00:11A youngster named Michael and his younger brother, Ralph, honed their skills on this
00:00:15go-kart track.
00:00:18Now, Michael Schumacher is in quest of his third Formula One World Championship, and
00:00:25his younger brother, Ralph, is a rising star.
00:00:27Today, they compete in their home Grand Prix, the Grand Prix of Germany.
00:00:57Welcome to Hockenheim for round 11 of the FIA Formula One World Championship.
00:01:01Today, the Grand Prix of Germany.
00:01:03Hi, everyone.
00:01:04I'm Mike Joy, alongside five-time Le Mans winner, Derek Bell, former Williams and Ferrari
00:01:09team manager, Peter Windsor, will join us from the paddock area in Pit Lane.
00:01:13Here's a look at what's coming up on our Mercedes-Benz pre-race today.
00:01:17Well, a lot of drivers swapping in the news and a breaking story there.
00:01:22The controversy over the computer on board Mika Hockenheim's car in the last race, and
00:01:28a very variable weather and qualifying session.
00:01:31And we'll go one-on-one with the president, no, the president of the FIA, Max Mosley.
00:01:39So, you can see the car park is full, and there's the stadium area, and then the track
00:01:43runs off into the forest.
00:01:46This beautiful course that's the second longest in all of Formula One.
00:01:50As Michael Schumacher is out for one of his reconnaissance laps, you see the countdown
00:01:54clock in the upper left as we close in on the start of the German Grand Prix.
00:01:59Schumacher is the points leader in the World Drivers' Championship, but he has scored no
00:02:04points the last two races.
00:02:05David Coulthard, just six back.
00:02:07Mika Hockenheim, two back of his McLaren teammate.
00:02:10And Barrichello, Fisichella, and Ralf Schumacher.
00:02:13And in the constructors, it's Ferrari on 92, McLaren on 88, Williams and Benetton, 19 and 18.
00:02:19Bayer on 112, and Georgian Mutant Honda on 11.
00:02:24So, is this the race where Michael gets his championship hopes back on track, or here
00:02:28is Mika Hockenheim, who has scored points in all but the first two races of the season,
00:02:34trying to defend his World Championship.
00:02:39Well, there's lots of news in the paddock area, and most of it surrounds what we call
00:02:42Tilly's season, the swapping of drivers and rides.
00:02:45And here's a world exclusive from Peter.
00:02:50Sensational news in the paddock, and you heard it first on Fox Sports Net, is that the deal
00:02:53is in place for Jenson Button to join Benetton-Renault for the next two years as teammate to Giancarlo
00:02:59Fisichella.
00:03:00Now, Williams will retain their contract with Button, and he's effectively on lease in much
00:03:05the same way that Jarno Trulli is on lease.
00:03:07He's a Benetton driver on lease to Jordan.
00:03:09But Jenson will be paid a retainer for the next two years.
00:03:12He'll also be paid by Benetton.
00:03:13He'll be a Benetton driver, and that is going to be officially announced, we believe, sometime
00:03:17in the next two weeks.
00:03:18That also means, of course, that Juan Pablo Montoya is going to be released from his Ganassi
00:03:22contract to join Williams alongside Ralf Schumacher.
00:03:25Other driver moves?
00:03:26Well, Jacques Villeneuve has decided to stay at BAR Honda for at least the next two years.
00:03:31Big commitment there from Jacques.
00:03:32It's likely that Riccardo Zonta will also stay there, and Heinz-Harald Frentzen has
00:03:36confirmed that he will be staying for another two years at Jordan Honda.
00:03:40Eddie Irvine, of course, missed the Austrian Grand Prix.
00:03:42Severe stomach pains there.
00:03:44He's OK.
00:03:45He's back.
00:03:46He's blonde.
00:03:47He's got a new image.
00:03:48He's looking very cool.
00:03:49Jaguar, of course, not quite up to par at the moment, but Eddie refreshed after that
00:03:52sojourn back to England.
00:03:54Well, of course, Luciano Berti did an excellent job there, standing in for Eddie Irvine.
00:03:58But, of course, he's back to test driver now, Mike.
00:04:00Well, there may be an F1 ride in his future, though.
00:04:02He was impressive.
00:04:03He certainly was.
00:04:04Well, the points for the constructors are different than when we left you in Austria.
00:04:09There's Michael Schumacher, there's a look, and here's Rubens Barrichello coming back
00:04:12onto the starting grid and to pit lane.
00:04:15After one of his recon laps, he'll start deep in the field.
00:04:17We'll explain that a little later on.
00:04:19But McLaren had their constructor points taken away in Austria because the engine management
00:04:23computer removed from Mika Hakkinen's car did not have one of the FIA seals on it,
00:04:29indicating the possibility of tampering.
00:04:32Peter will explain later in detail just what that involves.
00:04:35But first, we wanted to give you Ron Dennis' take on the $50,000 fine
00:04:41and the loss of the constructor points.
00:04:45I'm a little disappointed.
00:04:47There's no question that there was a sticker missing,
00:04:51but there is no formal process of its application.
00:04:55It's a responsibility set between the FIA, the team, and the electronic supplier.
00:05:01After one and a half days of the most detailed electronic forensic process,
00:05:06not only is the system declared completely legal,
00:05:09but it's also identified as being exactly the same as that registered to the FIA beforehand.
00:05:16So to take the points from the team is somewhat severe.
00:05:20Most people would say, well, why didn't you appeal?
00:05:24The problem is that there's not many teams in this pit lane that have ever succeeded in appeal.
00:05:32And I think coming to the Grand Prix with two drivers motivated,
00:05:36with their points intact, and a team motivated by having lost points,
00:05:43is a more constructive way for us to proceed.
00:05:47I don't think it will damage our efforts on the Constructors' Championship,
00:05:51because I think we have a better car.
00:05:54So we just took a pragmatic view on it.
00:05:57So McLaren lost their points from Austria.
00:05:59A little later on, we'll explain why the podium result from that race did not change.
00:06:05No Constructor points, but the drivers who stood on the podium in Austria retained their points.
00:06:10It's a little confusing, but we'll explain after this.
00:06:15So a Mercedes-Benz pre-race for the Grand Prix of Germany,
00:06:18and an interesting combination, Hockenheim, between the stadium portion of the circuit
00:06:22and the beautiful German countryside, Derek.
00:06:25The second longest circuit in Grand Prix racing.
00:06:27Yes, it's a 4.24 miles long, Mike.
00:06:31A long circuit, 45 laps to race, 14 turns, the top speed 218 or so miles an hour.
00:06:37So let's get out there and do the lap with Rubens Barrichello.
00:06:42As we go by the pits, we come up to the fastest corner on the circuit, in fact,
00:06:45of 110 mile an hour right-hander, which leads us out onto the long, long drive
00:06:51out through the forest, as we call it.
00:06:53You want to be absolutely on song as you come out of there,
00:06:55because it's such a long way.
00:06:5617 seconds at full throttle as he gets up into 6th gear
00:07:00and works his way up into the Jim Clark chicane.
00:07:02215 miles an hour as he brakes.
00:07:04Of course, this lap was done in the damp just yesterday.
00:07:07You have to be very, very cautious going through the Jim Clark chicane
00:07:10that used to be a flat-out right-hander in days gone by
00:07:13until the tragedy with Jim Clark.
00:07:15Here he is working his way down towards the east curve.
00:07:19A long, long section.
00:07:2013 seconds.
00:07:21Full revs in 6th gear as he drives down again through the forest.
00:07:25Beautiful part of the track.
00:07:26This used to be a flat-out right-hander.
00:07:28Very, very dodgy corner.
00:07:30Careful on those bumps.
00:07:31A bit of adverse camber as he turns into them,
00:07:33so it does upset the balance of the car as he goes through.
00:07:36It is a smooth surface and a high grip level.
00:07:39He's working his way down this little, slightly bumpy bit of the track.
00:07:42Remember, it is quite an old circuit.
00:07:44Works his way down.
00:07:45215 miles an hour in 6th or 7th gear.
00:07:48Braking down to 2nd gear for the Senna chicane.
00:07:51Runs over a lot of curve there.
00:07:53Touches the curve on the left.
00:07:55Accelerates out onto this, again, another fast section.
00:07:58Four very heavy braking sections in this circuit.
00:08:02This is the most amazing feeling as the driver coming into the stadium.
00:08:05Down as he goes, down into 3rd gear, into the stadium.
00:08:09200,000 people sitting there watching the roar you can hear
00:08:12amongst the noise of your car.
00:08:14Turns into the Sachs curve.
00:08:16Very, very careful as he puts the power.
00:08:17Doesn't want too much understeer.
00:08:19Push as he comes out of there.
00:08:20Dropping downhill very slightly.
00:08:22Down in gear.
00:08:23Through this corner to where Michael Schumacher lost it
00:08:25just before qualifying yesterday morning.
00:08:27Onto the pit straight.
00:08:28Back up again to 190 miles an hour.
00:08:31That was a long lap with Rubens Barrichello.
00:08:35Well, there you have track surface was smooth.
00:08:37Grip level high.
00:08:38Tire compound is medium.
00:08:39Tire wear is medium.
00:08:41Brake wear is very high, as I mentioned.
00:08:43Braxton Trottle, 72% of the lap.
00:08:45And fuel consumption is high as we look at Eddie O...
00:08:48Eddie Irvine there, drinking some stuff to keep his hair blonde.
00:08:51When Eddie was in the hospital, he thought,
00:08:53well, geez, you know, if I go from this stomach ailment,
00:08:55what haven't I done in my life?
00:08:57And about all he could think of was,
00:08:58well, he hadn't yet dyed his hair.
00:09:00He considered blue, but settled for blonde.
00:09:02What a wonderful way to be.
00:09:03The only thing you haven't done is go blonde.
00:09:05I'd say.
00:09:07Well, let's go back to Peter and get further detail
00:09:10on what happened to Mika Hakkinen's McLaren in Austria
00:09:12that caused McLaren to lose their constructor points
00:09:15for lack of a seal on the engine computer.
00:09:19So this black box here is what the Mika Hakkinen drama
00:09:22after Austria was all about.
00:09:23As you can see, relatively small.
00:09:25This is a ECU, electronic control unit.
00:09:28Typically, a Grand Prix car will have two or three of these.
00:09:31This one controls the engine, the gearbox,
00:09:34and the power steering, as it happens.
00:09:36Now, we see here a locked Hockenheim sticker here
00:09:38and two FIA seals.
00:09:40Now, it was one of these two seals
00:09:42that was not on the McLaren ECU,
00:09:45and which caused the drama.
00:09:46But McLaren were able to prove,
00:09:47when they uploaded their data into the FIA computer,
00:09:50that nothing had changed since these seals were applied.
00:09:53And that is why there was that strange ruling.
00:09:56The team lost their points, the driver didn't.
00:09:58There's a bit of vague area there.
00:10:00But basically, the FIA very, very closely monitored
00:10:03the sort of software that the teams run.
00:10:06And if the teams are going to do something dodgy, of course,
00:10:08it is going to be through the software.
00:10:10Looks like the FIA are right on top of the problem,
00:10:13and it looks as if McLaren were completely innocent as charged.
00:10:19Well, any time you have computers involved in auto racing,
00:10:23certainly there are ways to skirt the rules very easily,
00:10:26as Peter says, through software or through a hardware change.
00:10:29It's a very difficult area to regulate.
00:10:32But something that has to be regulated, Mike.
00:10:34Oh, and I agree. I don't think the FIA erred.
00:10:36I think the penalty was fair.
00:10:38The seal has to be there if it's there to prevent tampering.
00:10:41And if, in fact, it does, then it's got to be there.
00:10:44Yeah. There's too much money at stake, and it's too big a business.
00:10:47Agree. Agree.
00:10:51Well, qualifying was a case of racing the rain.
00:10:54And all these folks on the pit wall were watching a track
00:10:57with only one driver on it to see how he fared.
00:11:00We'll be back in a moment.
00:11:03From Mercedes-Benz pre-race for the Grand Prix of Germany
00:11:06in two weeks' time at 10 a.m. your local time,
00:11:09you'll see the Grand Prix of Hungary,
00:11:11different times in Florida and the San Francisco Bay Area,
00:11:14but most of you will see our next Grand Prix telecast
00:11:17at 10 a.m. your local time.
00:11:20Mika Hockenheim in conference, and you see the umbrellas at the ready.
00:11:23Those are not to keep them from sunstroke.
00:11:26It has been a very, very wet weekend here at Hockenheim,
00:11:30as the umbrella goes up over Pedro Diniz's cockpit.
00:11:33And, really, Derek, it seems like in qualifying yesterday
00:11:36they were racing the weather more so than they were racing each other.
00:11:39Yes, Mike, they really were. I mean, torrential rain struck
00:11:41just moments before qualifying started
00:11:43and got everybody lined up in the pit lane,
00:11:45ready to go as soon as those lights went green,
00:11:47and they were desperate to get out.
00:11:49Hockenheim being over four miles round,
00:11:51there's a chance that part of the circuit, of course,
00:11:53will be dry as well as wet.
00:11:55This is a scene where Heinz, our friend,
00:11:57had actually overshot the chicane to get ahead of two guys ahead of him
00:12:00so he could get a clear lap on his first lap.
00:12:02He was penalized for that.
00:12:04Here is Fizikela. He was penalized for this spin,
00:12:06but he did manage to get back and get in a spare car
00:12:08and record a tremendous time.
00:12:10Rubens Barrichello, meanwhile, he stops out on the track
00:12:13very close to Fizikela's car
00:12:15and had to jog back, having not achieved a time either,
00:12:17or even qualified.
00:12:19But it was David Coulthard that goes out and gets pole
00:12:21in those very early segments of the session,
00:12:24in the first five minutes, in fact,
00:12:26but Ferrari left to wonder, what are we going to do here?
00:12:28Rubens hasn't qualified,
00:12:30so, in fact, Michael Schumacher, having qualified himself,
00:12:33he says, well, let Rubens go out in the training car,
00:12:36because Michael, of course, had crashed his car
00:12:38in the early session.
00:12:40Out comes the sun, but Rubens is trying very hard.
00:12:42This part of the track is dry,
00:12:44but he just couldn't get up there.
00:12:46At this point, he was 22nd and last,
00:12:48in fact, hadn't qualified with his time.
00:12:50Hakkinen, a little bit later on, he goes out.
00:12:52He was second for a while,
00:12:54but he could only manage fourth place.
00:12:56Ferrari gets Michael's car rebuilt in time,
00:12:59and out he goes, but it's Barrichello
00:13:01who is desperately trying to hang on there.
00:13:03They're checking every bit of his lap as he goes around,
00:13:06and, in fact, Rubens qualified 18th, nonetheless.
00:13:09Jordans, they had a similar problem to Ferrari,
00:13:11because Frenzel was penalized,
00:13:13lost his time on that early lap because of what he did,
00:13:15and he qualified 17th.
00:13:17Schumacher goes out, the last lap.
00:13:19What a lap! What an outstanding lap.
00:13:21Gets second place.
00:13:23Let's go down and see what David Coulthard
00:13:25thoughts are on the start of the race.
00:13:28Just the same way you always do,
00:13:30which is to try and maximize your start.
00:13:34I intend to turn the pool into the leading
00:13:37and take him out of the first corner,
00:13:39and if that happens, obviously I've got a good chance.
00:13:41Michael Schumacher dressing his fans,
00:13:43but let's go down and hear what Peter Winsor
00:13:45caught up with Pedro de la Rosa.
00:13:47Pedro de la Rosa, a name we're hearing more and more
00:13:49in Formula 1, lying third in the Austrian Grand Prix,
00:13:51now best of the rest here at Hockenheim.
00:13:53You must be very happy.
00:13:54Tell us about that opening lap
00:13:56and what it was like in those conditions.
00:13:58Well, I just took the spare car
00:14:00because my car was not ready.
00:14:02There was an engine change.
00:14:04So we took the spare car because the sky was really dark
00:14:07and we knew that it was going to start raining.
00:14:09So I just had a good lap, basically.
00:14:11Nothing special, really.
00:14:12And when I came in, I was quite surprised
00:14:14to be fourth at that stage,
00:14:15because it was nothing special.
00:14:17It was just that I did a pretty good lap for the conditions.
00:14:20A very modest assessment there by Pedro.
00:14:22Best of the rest.
00:14:25We have a look at Eddie Irvine being interviewed.
00:14:27The reason Barrichello could not do well
00:14:29in a car set up for Schumacher,
00:14:30the pedal spacing is different.
00:14:32Michael's a left foot breaker.
00:14:33Ruben's brakes with his right foot.
00:14:35So a difficult adjustment.
00:14:37Ferrari team doing a great job to get him out in a car
00:14:40that he could drive and could qualify
00:14:42prior to the expiration of the hour.
00:14:44Alexander Virts settling in.
00:14:46We get a lot of e-mail questions from you folks
00:14:49and we thought we'd take the most frequently asked questions
00:14:53and deal with them all today.
00:14:54So here are the answers to many of your e-mail inquiries.
00:14:59Beginning with,
00:15:00who is the fellow who asks the questions
00:15:02at each press conference?
00:15:04I've been waiting for hours to try and answer this question.
00:15:06Apparently, that's where the unilateral studio is for this race.
00:15:09That's where somebody called Nick Damon
00:15:11does these interviews with the drivers
00:15:12after qualifying and the race.
00:15:14We still don't really know
00:15:15whether he's a computer voice or a real person.
00:15:17We found a guy in the paddock
00:15:18that had Nick Damon written on his Polka TV shirt.
00:15:20We think it was him.
00:15:21He didn't really want to talk.
00:15:22We managed to get out of him
00:15:23the fact that the good questions are his
00:15:25and the bad questions aren't his.
00:15:27But that's about all, I'm afraid.
00:15:30Many of you asked if the teams have two-way radios,
00:15:32why do they still use pit signs?
00:15:35Well, this one's a bit like asking
00:15:36why you need a palm pilot and an address book.
00:15:38Well, it's because, of course, radios don't always work.
00:15:41Here at Williams, MRTC do a great job.
00:15:43And really, they could probably do without pit signals.
00:15:45At Ferrari, it's the same.
00:15:46But in other teams, there is a drama.
00:15:48Equally, drivers like to know
00:15:50somebody out there cares about them.
00:15:52Every lap, somebody's sticking a board out.
00:15:54And it's still an art, of course.
00:15:55All these different words you can come up with.
00:15:57Beautifully done here at Williams.
00:15:58And you can tell the drivers anything you want, really.
00:16:02Why doesn't F1 use the large-diameter tires,
00:16:06wheels, and skinny, narrow rubber-band tires?
00:16:08A very simple answer to this one.
00:16:10Of course, low-profile tires, by definition,
00:16:12require quite large-diameter wheels.
00:16:14In Formula 1, the diameter of the wheel
00:16:16is limited to 13 inches across.
00:16:18That is because, in Formula 1,
00:16:20they want to keep control of brake performance.
00:16:22They want to limit the size of the brakes.
00:16:24Now, of course, they could limit the size of the brakes
00:16:26via regulation in itself.
00:16:28But if they had 16-inch wheels with a small brake,
00:16:31more air would circulate,
00:16:32and the brake would become more efficient.
00:16:34So, the best way of doing it,
00:16:35keep brake power under control,
00:16:37limit the wheel size to 13 inches,
00:16:39and no low-profile tires as a result.
00:16:42And finally, why don't we ever hear
00:16:44how much money is won in a Grand Prix?
00:16:47Prize money in Formula 1,
00:16:48a big question mark.
00:16:49All the team owners signed a confidentiality clause
00:16:52many years ago, part of the Concord Agreement.
00:16:54Nobody knows how much they're paid.
00:16:56It's possible that the winner of a Grand Prix
00:16:58will receive nothing.
00:16:59It really depends on the deal he has with his team.
00:17:01He may get points money,
00:17:02he may get a bonus if he wins the race.
00:17:04Of course, the teams get appearance money,
00:17:06television rights money as part of their deal.
00:17:08But that money really is put into a big pool,
00:17:11divided into the 17 races,
00:17:13and it's dependent on how well that team has performed
00:17:16over the past 18 months in qualifying and the race.
00:17:19So, if Minardi win a Grand Prix,
00:17:20they will earn much less than Ferrari or McLaren.
00:17:24Anyway, we hope this covers some of the question marks
00:17:26of the very mysterious Formula 1 paddock.
00:17:29Many more questions, so keep those emails coming in.
00:17:32Thanks, Peter.
00:17:33Our email address, formula1 at foxsport.net.
00:17:37Well, we've been noticing
00:17:38there's a little bit of drizzle of rain coming down,
00:17:40and this causes a certain amount of consternation
00:17:42for the technical guys,
00:17:43because do they set the car up a little bit softer
00:17:45for the damp conditions, or do they leave it in for dry?
00:17:47So, somebody be looking at that meteorological forecast
00:17:50pretty closely and watching where those clouds come from.
00:17:53The weather remains quite variable here at Hockenheim.
00:17:57Well, the other evening was the annual Grand Prix ball,
00:17:59and the Germans do it up well.
00:18:00Everyone was there in their period costumes and powdered wigs.
00:18:05No, that's Eddie's dye job, that's not a wig.
00:18:08Anyway, everyone looked very splendid,
00:18:10and a good and expensive time was had by all.
00:18:15Sportsnet is brought to you by Mercedes-Benz,
00:18:18located on the web at mbusa.com.
00:18:23Coming up on Fox Sportsnet, we'll be at Hungary,
00:18:2510 a.m. your local time, in two weeks,
00:18:27then Belgium and Italy into September,
00:18:29and we've further expanded our U.S. Grand Prix coverage.
00:18:32These are all Eastern Time.
00:18:34Friday, two rounds of practice live on Fox Sportsnet.
00:18:38Saturday, live qualifying coverage,
00:18:40and Sunday the 24th, the U.S. Grand Prix.
00:18:43You ask for it, we're going to do it.
00:18:45Now, let's make sure we get those ratings to justify this.
00:18:49But lots of coverage from the U.S. Grand Prix,
00:18:51then Japan and Malaysia to close out
00:18:53our third consecutive season on Fox Sportsnet.
00:18:57Jarno, truly, don't see any drops on his visor yet, Derek.
00:19:00Of course, I don't see the umbrella there yet, either.
00:19:02No, I think it's just a parting shower, as we say.
00:19:06But, of course, it doesn't mean to say it isn't damp
00:19:08at the other end of the circuit.
00:19:09That's the trouble with these four-mile circuits,
00:19:11and I've raced there many times, and you think,
00:19:13oh, it's great here, and get out the back,
00:19:15and it's like an ice rink.
00:19:16Well, the fans are at the ready with all of their rain gear,
00:19:19and we are, too.
00:19:20Now, coming up the end of September,
00:19:22the United States Grand Prix.
00:19:23We've got the best seat in the house,
00:19:25high above start-finish.
00:19:26We thought you'd have a look at where you might watch the race from.
00:19:34Most of Indiana is flat.
00:19:36Luckily, this place isn't.
00:19:38I'm standing on the 7th tee of the Brickyard Crossing Golf Course
00:19:41in the Indian Field.
00:19:43If you don't already have your tickets,
00:19:45these grass and earthen berms are the best place
00:19:48for general admission ticket holders to watch the U.S. Grand Prix.
00:19:51Now, behind me, there's a straightaway
00:19:53coming back behind the Speedway Museum,
00:19:55and then a right turn that leads off to the short chute
00:19:58where the cars will enter the two-and-a-half-mile oval.
00:20:01The catch fencing isn't up yet, but this is a great view,
00:20:04so bring your cameras and get here early
00:20:06to stake out your square of indie real estate.
00:20:09Now let's have a look at the other extreme
00:20:11in how to watch the U.S. Grand Prix.
00:20:14Above the brand-new garages built for Formula One
00:20:17are these luxury suites, 12 of them,
00:20:20each segmented into thirds,
00:20:22where you and your corporate clients
00:20:24can enjoy the Grand Prix with full catering,
00:20:27noise-reducing ceilings,
00:20:29and specially blown-in-from-England glare-reducing glass.
00:20:32You get a great view of the front straightaway,
00:20:35all the comforts of home,
00:20:37and everything the folks in the stands get
00:20:39except the sunburn and the noise of Formula One.
00:20:47And here are the fans at Hockenheim,
00:20:49those that are lucky enough to be under a roof
00:20:51in the stadium complex because there is a light drizzle,
00:20:54as you see umbrellas covering the drivers
00:20:56as we get set to go.
00:21:00This week we go Formula One on one with the president,
00:21:03the president of the FIA.
00:21:05Peter had a sit-down with the eminent Max Mosley.
00:21:11How to introduce Max Mosley,
00:21:13nephew of the Mitford sisters perhaps,
00:21:15son of the British wartime politician Sir Oswald,
00:21:18former racing driver, former team owner,
00:21:20linguist, attorney at law.
00:21:22Well, he's also president of the FIA,
00:21:24the Federation International Automobile,
00:21:26the governing body of Formula One.
00:21:28And as such, we asked Max how important
00:21:30the U.S. Grand Prix was to Formula One.
00:21:34I think very important because we've missed
00:21:36having a Grand Prix in the United States
00:21:38and then it's never really worked in America
00:21:42because there was never one place
00:21:44which was traditionally the Formula One Grand Prix,
00:21:47the American Grand Prix, ever since Watkins Glen.
00:21:50So it's good to have Indianapolis
00:21:52because that's a great centre of motor racing
00:21:55and the fact that it's apparently sold out
00:21:58is very encouraging.
00:22:01Let's look five years ahead.
00:22:03How big do you potentially see that race becoming
00:22:07and will it actually change the way
00:22:09other Formula One Grands Prix are held and staged?
00:22:12Well, that's quite possible.
00:22:14I think the thing is that it's probably
00:22:19set an example to other people
00:22:21just how big something like that can be.
00:22:24It's more or less double the crowd
00:22:26that we have anywhere else
00:22:28simply because the space is there to accommodate it
00:22:31and America has always traditionally been
00:22:35somewhere where the local racing
00:22:37or the national racing was preeminent.
00:22:40The fact that Formula One can be so big
00:22:43is very encouraging.
00:22:44A quick State of the Union on Formula One.
00:22:47We've been in this mire of European Commission control
00:22:49for a while.
00:22:50Light at the end of the tunnel there?
00:22:52I think yes.
00:22:53I think really in the end
00:22:55I think there's a tendency perhaps in Europe
00:22:57to see things too much in European terms
00:23:00and we see it very much in world terms.
00:23:02So in the final analysis
00:23:04if we had problems in Europe
00:23:06it would be irritating but not catastrophic.
00:23:08But I think those problems are likely to be sorted out.
00:23:11I think reason will prevail.
00:23:13It usually does in the end
00:23:14but sometimes it takes a bit of time.
00:23:16By that do I take it you mean that
00:23:18races could be taken out of Europe
00:23:19and staged worldwide without any problems?
00:23:21I wouldn't say without any problem
00:23:23but it could be done.
00:23:24But it's not desirable.
00:23:26We really like to keep the traditions
00:23:28the traditional events
00:23:29the traditional Grands Prix and so on.
00:23:31But in the final analysis
00:23:33if you had to we could.
00:23:34How important is it to have an American driver in Formula One?
00:23:37It's important but probably not as important as one would think.
00:23:40Back in the 70s
00:23:42when Mario Andretti won the World Championship
00:23:44we thought at that time
00:23:45that would make a big difference
00:23:47to the following in the United States.
00:23:49I'm not sure it did.
00:23:50And that's notwithstanding that
00:23:51Mario wasn't just an American driver
00:23:53he was really the American driver
00:23:55in that era.
00:23:56Thank you very much, Max.
00:23:57Thank you.
00:24:00You ask Max a question
00:24:01and you get a very, very eloquent answer.
00:24:03I loved talking to him.
00:24:04I hope you enjoyed listening to him.
00:24:07Max also tipped that
00:24:08we're probably not too far away in America
00:24:10from having the enhanced digital video feed
00:24:13available on the Internet.
00:24:16There's the World Champion point leader
00:24:18Michael Schumacher
00:24:19who has not scored points in the last two races.
00:24:22And Mika Hakkinen
00:24:23and Mika Hakkinen
00:24:24the man who hopes to win
00:24:25his third consecutive World Championship.
00:24:27We'll be back with the starting grid
00:24:29and the start of the race after this.
00:24:33Welcome back to our Fox Sportsnet coverage
00:24:35and you see a bit of glare on the visor now
00:24:37of Mika Hakkinen.
00:24:38Talk about variable weather.
00:24:40The sun is out in the stadium complex.
00:24:42Those umbrellas
00:24:43are to shield the drivers from sun.
00:24:45Back in the forest section of the course
00:24:47it is raining.
00:24:49That's why the chance of rain
00:24:50lists there at 90%.
00:24:54Getting close up on the formation lap.
00:25:16See those very dark clouds off in the distance?
00:25:19The near distance.
00:25:21One yellow flag waving.
00:25:24That's actually just what Rubens wanted.
00:25:33It was the car in front of him
00:25:34to not be moving.
00:25:35He's got a gap now.
00:25:37It's one of the two Williams.
00:25:38Is that Button?
00:25:39Jenson Button, is it?
00:25:40Yes.
00:25:41He's right in front of...
00:25:42Yeah.
00:25:45Well, let's show you how they will start today.
00:25:47David Coulthard has his second pole of the year
00:25:49and 10th career pole for McLaren Mercedes.
00:25:52Schumacher had a stunning lap
00:25:53in the wet at the end
00:25:54to get right up beside David.
00:25:56Second row on our Mercedes-Benz starting grid
00:25:58Giancarlo Fisichella
00:25:59thrilled with qualifying third for Benetton.
00:26:01And after Hacken and stunning form in Austria
00:26:03one must question his ability
00:26:04in the damp, tricky conditions yesterday.
00:26:08Pedlo de la Rosa went out
00:26:10couldn't believe that he was
00:26:11up in the top five on the board
00:26:13when he made his first run
00:26:14and he stayed there fifth.
00:26:15And Jarno Trulli in the Jordan
00:26:16with slight aerodynamic modifications
00:26:18proving the cars quick.
00:26:21Alexander Virts was pleased
00:26:22the car had good balance
00:26:23and he got a clear lap.
00:26:24He's seventh.
00:26:25Johnny Herbert eighth
00:26:26because he's got a development engine in
00:26:28as has Eddie Irvine.
00:26:31Jack Villeneuve a bit conservative
00:26:32on his first run
00:26:33and his last run
00:26:34foiled by the rain
00:26:35will line up ninth.
00:26:36Irvine as I said
00:26:37just slightly out
00:26:39qualified by his teammate.
00:26:41Just for stopping
00:26:42the car was not repaired in time
00:26:44so he missed the first run in the dry
00:26:46couldn't improve on 11th.
00:26:48And Zonto, well he's 12th
00:26:49good position.
00:26:51Nick Heidfeld lost the morning practice
00:26:53so went out with a guess on the setup
00:26:56he guessed for 13th.
00:26:57And Ralf Schumacher
00:26:58not very happy with his position
00:27:00but the Williams hasn't shone
00:27:01very much recently.
00:27:03In the Sauber, Mika Salo
00:27:04had traffic on his first lap
00:27:05so couldn't improve on 15th.
00:27:07Jenson Button dodging the rain
00:27:09will line up 16th
00:27:10and now will go to the back
00:27:11for missing the start of the formation lap.
00:27:13Heinz-Harald Frentzen
00:27:14his first run was disallowed
00:27:16because on not his fast lap
00:27:18he passed cars in front of him
00:27:19at the chicane
00:27:20the game track position
00:27:21so he came back to run 17th
00:27:23and Barrichello
00:27:24after spinning
00:27:25after having trouble with his car
00:27:28not spinning it
00:27:29problems with his car
00:27:30Michael's car not set up
00:27:31for his right foot braking style
00:27:32he eventually managed to get on the grid
00:27:34in 18th.
00:27:36Pedro Diniz
00:27:37in his Sauber
00:27:38he had traffic on his first run
00:27:40was 19th and couldn't improve
00:27:42and John Alesi said
00:27:43it was just his worst qualifying day ever
00:27:45in his Formula 1 career
00:27:46which as you know
00:27:47is the longest of all the drivers.
00:27:49The minorities went out
00:27:50for their first run
00:27:51on rain tires
00:27:52that was a mistake
00:27:53Bazzacconi and Genet
00:27:55on the last row of the grid
00:27:56Genet
00:27:57then with car trouble
00:27:58then blew up
00:27:59when he went out in the spare
00:28:00that's why he's a second and a half
00:28:01behind his teammate.
00:28:04Saw a little on board
00:28:05from Fisichella there
00:28:06as he comes to line up
00:28:08in third on this grid.
00:28:10Points of the last four races
00:28:12David Coulthard 26th
00:28:14Mika 20th
00:28:15Marichello 20th
00:28:16and Michael Schumacher
00:28:17only 10th
00:28:18with his Canadian win.
00:28:19And it'd be intriguing to see
00:28:20just how Michael Schumacher
00:28:21takes this start
00:28:22there's a lot of controversy
00:28:24over the way he's been starting
00:28:25this season.
00:28:26Alright
00:28:27Ross Brawn of Ferrari
00:28:28one of the anxious onlookers
00:28:30as we get set for the start
00:28:32of the German Grand Prix.
00:28:34Great start from Schumacher
00:28:45it looked like
00:28:46but not good enough.
00:28:50Oh dear
00:28:51oh dear
00:28:52did one of those Benetons
00:28:53go in there?
00:28:57It looked like a Beneton
00:28:58I think it was two cars.
00:29:01Yellow's waving
00:29:02and Michael Schumacher
00:29:03is in the wall as well.
00:29:05Fisichella
00:29:06So from second and third
00:29:10they are out of it.
00:29:11Oh my goodness
00:29:12that's just what we didn't need
00:29:13in Germany
00:29:14that is for sure
00:29:15what Schumacher didn't need
00:29:16for this World Championship.
00:29:18Well if they don't restart
00:29:19this race
00:29:21that would be the third race
00:29:22in a row
00:29:23in which Schumacher
00:29:24is pointless.
00:29:28Well they're not red flagging it.
00:29:31No they're going to have room
00:29:32to lift those cars up
00:29:33and off the course.
00:29:35Incredibly.
00:29:38Schumacher and Fisichella
00:29:39out in a first turn crash.
00:29:41Oh and a bit of
00:29:42nudging there on that.
00:29:43Now the two Saubers
00:29:44wheelbanging one another.
00:29:58So it's a McLaren one two
00:29:59on the first lap
00:30:00but certainly not
00:30:01as we expected.
00:30:02Jarno Trulli
00:30:03and Pedro de la Rosa
00:30:04right there.
00:30:12Eddie Irvine up for fifth.
00:30:14Now he's down to see
00:30:15what Barry Keller can do
00:30:16because there's one remaining Ferrari.
00:30:17What a nightmare
00:30:18in Germany
00:30:19for Schumacher and Ferrari.
00:30:21Michael looks so confident
00:30:22all weekend.
00:30:26But it's a long race
00:30:27and a lot of attrition
00:30:29takes place here
00:30:30that's for sure.
00:30:31Well I'd hope not to use
00:30:32the old saw
00:30:33as the true blondes
00:30:34have more fun
00:30:35but Irvine was tenth
00:30:36on the grid
00:30:37and he's running fifth
00:30:38in one lap.
00:30:39Amazing bit of stuff.
00:30:40We hear that
00:30:41somebody jumped the start
00:30:42as well
00:30:43so there'll be a penalty
00:30:44possibly for that.
00:30:46The fact that Hackerman
00:30:47got through so quickly
00:30:48makes you wonder
00:30:49I hope it wasn't Mika.
00:30:51Look at Barry Keller
00:30:52pulling up to go by
00:30:54one of the lucky strike cars.
00:30:56Yes he does.
00:30:58Bit of speed
00:30:59into the Jim Clark chicane.
00:31:03Barry Keller
00:31:04coming up really well
00:31:06as we ride with him.
00:31:13Going down to the east curve
00:31:14up to 215 miles an hour.
00:31:17There he is
00:31:18behind one of the other...
00:31:20Oh look!
00:31:21Whoa!
00:31:22Look at the arrows.
00:31:24Now Barry Keller
00:31:25is right there behind Villeneuve
00:31:26on the right of your screen.
00:31:27He had just passed Zonta.
00:31:29That white car is Villeneuve
00:31:30just ahead
00:31:31of Rubens.
00:31:36A bit of slipstreaming
00:31:37or a lot of slipstreaming
00:31:38to try and benefit
00:31:39from the high speed
00:31:40of these cars.
00:31:41There we go.
00:31:42Look.
00:31:43Pushed up and goes by.
00:31:44Goes by Herbert.
00:31:47And also Barry Keller
00:31:48has got by Villeneuve.
00:31:52What a storming drive
00:31:53by Barry Keller so far.
00:31:54Let's watch the start.
00:31:56Now watch
00:31:57second row right
00:31:58is Fisichella.
00:31:59Front row
00:32:00Schumacher.
00:32:01Coulthard
00:32:02slices across
00:32:03but he takes up
00:32:04so much real estate
00:32:05doing it
00:32:06that Haakonen gets the lead.
00:32:08And there's Schumacher
00:32:09coming over.
00:32:10He and Fisichella
00:32:11get together.
00:32:14Here we go.
00:32:15Michael now breaks.
00:32:16Fisichella can't stop
00:32:17and he hits him.
00:32:18And off they both go.
00:32:19What a disaster
00:32:20for second and third man
00:32:21on the grid.
00:32:23Somebody said
00:32:24Michael Schumacher
00:32:25for Tard
00:32:26and he did there.
00:32:27Look at those tires
00:32:28all over the top of the car.
00:32:29Well it was Coulthard
00:32:30making a very
00:32:31Schumacher-like move
00:32:32decisively slicing
00:32:33across Michael's bow
00:32:35but using up
00:32:36all that extra real estate
00:32:37he made his point
00:32:38but it cost him
00:32:39the lead, Derek.
00:32:40Oh and there's
00:32:41Barry Keller going again.
00:32:43Down he goes.
00:32:46No he doesn't.
00:32:47He can't get by the Jag.
00:32:48Look at the speed
00:32:49of that Jaguar.
00:32:50Here he goes.
00:32:51He's going to get him
00:32:52under braking.
00:32:53Come on.
00:32:54Oh the curb.
00:32:55It might have been the curb.
00:32:56Sorry.
00:32:57The speed of that Jaguar
00:32:58but of course
00:32:59it could also mean
00:33:00that they're running
00:33:01very low wing on the Jag.
00:33:04Allowing it to get
00:33:05the high speed.
00:33:10Look at this.
00:33:11Look at the length
00:33:12that Jag pulls out
00:33:13but of course
00:33:14you lose something like
00:33:1520-25 yards
00:33:16under braking
00:33:17when you're running
00:33:18a low downforce
00:33:19configuration
00:33:20over a high downforce.
00:33:24I'm not sure
00:33:25which is more
00:33:26the shock of the race
00:33:28as you see
00:33:29Hockenden started
00:33:30fourth now first
00:33:31Jarno Trullis
00:33:32from sixth to third
00:33:33Eddie Irvine
00:33:34from tenth to seventh
00:33:35and we're corrected
00:33:36it's Herbert
00:33:37ahead of Irvine
00:33:38not the other way around
00:33:39the scoring's been updated
00:33:40to show Herbert.
00:33:41Now watch
00:33:42there goes Rubens
00:33:43is he going to get by?
00:33:44Yes he's got to get by
00:33:45coming into the stadium
00:33:46surely because it's
00:33:47a much better overtaking area
00:33:48because it's a faster corner
00:33:49yes he's got him
00:33:50good line
00:33:51well done Barry Keller
00:33:52what a drive
00:33:53from 18th place
00:33:54on the grid
00:33:55unbelievable
00:33:57and he goes past
00:33:58Irvine into seventh
00:33:59I was saying Derek
00:34:00perhaps the biggest shock
00:34:01of the first part
00:34:02of this race
00:34:03are the Arrows
00:34:04de la Rosa's in fourth
00:34:05and Verstappen
00:34:06is in sixth
00:34:07yeah exactly
00:34:08but de la Rosa's been quick
00:34:09all weekend Michael
00:34:10he was very quick
00:34:11in warmup this morning
00:34:12de la Rosa was third
00:34:13quickest this morning
00:34:14in warmup
00:34:17and Arrows
00:34:18next year will be
00:34:19just done a deal
00:34:20to be running
00:34:21these new
00:34:22Peugeot engines
00:34:23Peugeot has been
00:34:24taken over
00:34:25Peugeot engine
00:34:26department
00:34:27taken over by
00:34:28a conglomerate
00:34:29from Japan
00:34:31and they'll be running
00:34:32those engines
00:34:33next year
00:34:34Asia Motor Technologies
00:34:35is the new consortium
00:34:36that's going to build those
00:34:45Verstappen now
00:34:46under heavy pressure
00:34:47from Barry Keller
00:34:53there's a gap back
00:34:54to Herbert
00:34:55locking up the brakes
00:34:56is Verstappen
00:34:57Barry Keller
00:34:58filling his mirrors
00:35:00Eddie Irvine behind
00:35:01is Johnny Herbert
00:35:02who's at the head
00:35:03of that train
00:35:04we also understand
00:35:05that Herbert
00:35:06is on a two-stop strategy
00:35:07hence he's running
00:35:08lighter fuel
00:35:09and has this extra
00:35:10speed momentum
00:35:11through the turns
00:35:12and out onto the straights
00:35:13although he certainly
00:35:14didn't do a very good job
00:35:15overtaking
00:35:16with that speed
00:35:17the Jag
00:35:18didn't we hear
00:35:19the same of Barry Keller
00:35:20didn't I say
00:35:21Barry Keller
00:35:22Arthur said
00:35:23Herbert
00:35:24I'm sorry
00:35:25I meant Barry Keller
00:35:26I'm sorry
00:35:27I certainly meant
00:35:28Barry Keller
00:35:32but isn't it wonderful
00:35:33to see slipstreaming races
00:35:34here we come
00:35:35into the stadium
00:35:47of course we see
00:35:48lots of slipstreaming
00:35:49races and naturally
00:35:50with IndyCar and IRL
00:35:51but there's nothing
00:35:52quite like
00:35:53seeing guys
00:35:54out braking one another
00:35:55from 215 miles an hour
00:35:56to 70 mile an hour
00:35:57corners
00:35:58that's when it's dramatic
00:35:59and a lot of balance
00:36:00and car control
00:36:01is required
00:36:04and thus far
00:36:05the sprinkles that we've seen
00:36:06have not
00:36:07really had much effect
00:36:08on the racing
00:36:09back in the forest
00:36:10section of the course
00:36:11a little bit
00:36:12you can see dampness
00:36:13a little different colour
00:36:14of the asphalt
00:36:15but really no sections
00:36:16of wet track
00:36:20Tomika Hakkinen
00:36:21leads from
00:36:22David Coulthard
00:36:23by seven tenths
00:36:24of a second
00:36:26another look
00:36:27at the start
00:36:28Coulthard cutting across
00:36:29Hakkinen taking
00:36:30the opposite side
00:36:31and in fact
00:36:32in fact I have to say
00:36:33David actually
00:36:34pushed Michael
00:36:35across there
00:36:36Michael wanted to
00:36:37keep his foot in it
00:36:38and you see
00:36:39David
00:36:40you can't quite see him
00:36:41he's on the right
00:36:42of Michael Schumacher
00:36:43here
00:36:44payback time of course
00:36:45pushes Michael
00:36:46right across the road
00:36:47he doesn't want
00:36:48to do it intentionally
00:36:49but that's what
00:36:50came out in the end
00:36:51the initial contact
00:36:52from the right front
00:36:53of Fisichella's wing
00:36:54flattens Schumacher's
00:36:55left rear tyre
00:36:56you just watch
00:36:57Michael goes across
00:36:58to the left
00:36:59trying to get by
00:37:00Coulthard on his right
00:37:01Coulthard moves back
00:37:02he doesn't touch
00:37:03Michael
00:37:04Michael tries to give him
00:37:05plenty of room
00:37:06but he touches Fisichella
00:37:07disaster
00:37:10and the reaction
00:37:12from Schumacher's garage
00:37:16so the McLarens
00:37:17win 2
00:37:18Jarno Trulli
00:37:19Pedro de la Rosa
00:37:20Johnny Herbert
00:37:21goes for stoppin
00:37:22in the German Grand Prix
00:37:23after 4 laps
00:37:24we'll be right back
00:37:26go back to Fox Sportsnet
00:37:27coverage of the
00:37:28German Grand Prix
00:37:29at Hockenheim
00:37:30riding with Rubens
00:37:31Barrichello
00:37:42well Rubens
00:37:43here he goes
00:37:44trying to get him
00:37:45under braking
00:37:46he goes down the inside
00:37:47yes he's got him
00:37:48Johnny wouldn't be
00:37:49the sort of driver
00:37:50to put Rubens off
00:37:51great piece of overtaking
00:37:52there by Rubens
00:37:53what a drive he's having
00:37:54in fact what a drive
00:37:55all those guys are having
00:37:56but Rubens is coming
00:37:57from 18th place
00:37:58on the grid
00:38:00pretty amazing drive
00:38:01you saw Jans for stop
00:38:02and try to take
00:38:03as advantage as
00:38:04Herbert gave way
00:38:10he's trying to hang
00:38:11in there on the brakes
00:38:12of course the trouble
00:38:13is when as I said
00:38:14just now
00:38:15he's still set up
00:38:16for high speed
00:38:17the braking isn't
00:38:18quite as efficient
00:38:19the car moves around more
00:38:27is Verstappen
00:38:28having a look
00:38:29is he?
00:38:30no he doesn't have a go
00:38:31he's worrying him
00:38:32he should get him
00:38:33on this next straight
00:38:34down the stadium
00:38:35it's a much easier
00:38:36overtaking
00:38:37because it's a
00:38:3890 degree entry
00:38:39into the stadium
00:38:40and therefore you can
00:38:41really get down the inside
00:38:42and it's wide
00:38:46look at the way that
00:38:47Jag weaves around
00:38:48on the braking
00:38:49you see over those bumps
00:38:50it just weaves
00:38:51turns into this
00:38:52cambered sax curve
00:38:53the lovely corner
00:38:54you can really get
00:38:55the car really well
00:38:56balanced and drifted
00:38:57out of there
00:38:59and over little brow
00:39:00down the slope
00:39:01through a very fast
00:39:02right hander
00:39:04and then this very
00:39:05important straight
00:39:06pit straight
00:39:07I swear I had a
00:39:08wheel come off one day
00:39:09great fun that one
00:39:10I'll bet
00:39:11straight in the bank
00:39:13well if you're
00:39:14at the start right now
00:39:15you have to be wondering
00:39:17about that first turn
00:39:18strategy
00:39:19you slice over to
00:39:20block Michael
00:39:21let's have a look at this
00:39:22this is Rubens
00:39:23overtaking
00:39:24Herbert
00:39:26good bit of
00:39:27overtaking there
00:39:28very good
00:39:29oh he did hit the curb
00:39:30we thought he did
00:39:31hit the curb
00:39:33here he goes
00:39:34on the inside
00:39:35the Jim Clark chicane
00:39:37hits that curb
00:39:38quite hard
00:39:39then of course
00:39:40he can take the right curb
00:39:41it's not so bad
00:39:42for him
00:39:43they've had a while
00:39:44just stretched their lead
00:39:45over Jarno Trulli
00:39:47remember they have
00:39:48new aerodynamic devices
00:39:49on this Jordan
00:39:50this weekend
00:39:51and they're
00:39:52as you well know
00:39:53are going to be running
00:39:54full works Honda engines
00:39:55next year
00:39:56very exciting future
00:39:57for Eddie Jordan's team
00:39:59and that was really
00:40:00the reason that
00:40:01Hyde's Harold Frentzen
00:40:02decided to stay
00:40:03remember in the
00:40:04Indy press conference
00:40:05on press day
00:40:06he said
00:40:07well yes they're
00:40:08very good engines
00:40:09Mugen does quite a good job
00:40:10but of course we have to
00:40:11pay for them
00:40:12but he did say
00:40:13there's some big news
00:40:14coming very shortly
00:40:15he did say that
00:40:16so we knew something was happening
00:40:17either he was leaving
00:40:18or else there was something
00:40:19big in the engine department
00:40:20which is what's happened
00:40:21right
00:40:26so Michael Schumacher's
00:40:27problems continue
00:40:28the only points
00:40:29he has scored now
00:40:30in five races
00:40:31counting today
00:40:32were the ten for
00:40:33his Canadian win
00:40:39I was saying Derek
00:40:40you have to kind of
00:40:41wonder
00:40:43about
00:40:44David's move
00:40:45it did ensure
00:40:46that he stayed ahead
00:40:47of Michael
00:40:48on the start
00:40:49but it cost him the lead
00:40:50well it did
00:40:51but he didn't have
00:40:52a good start
00:40:53Mika had a better start
00:40:54and of course at the same time
00:40:55David with no way
00:40:56would he want to push
00:40:57Michael off the road
00:40:58and they weren't really
00:40:59that close
00:41:00it's just that Michael
00:41:01could see him
00:41:02veering across on him
00:41:03and he had no idea
00:41:04that Fizzi was that close
00:41:05and Michael
00:41:06braked early
00:41:07because of David
00:41:08on his right
00:41:09because he couldn't
00:41:10see him
00:41:11on his left
00:41:12so he had to
00:41:13drive through
00:41:14wow
00:41:15and remember
00:41:16as Derek said
00:41:17and I overstated
00:41:18he is on a two stop strategy
00:41:19so started the race
00:41:20with a
00:41:21lower fuel load
00:41:22than some of his competitors
00:41:23so not surprising
00:41:24that he would have
00:41:25the fastest lap
00:41:26of the race
00:41:27in the early going
00:41:33sounds very neat
00:41:34over those kerbs
00:41:35at the moment
00:41:36it does beat
00:41:37the chassis to death
00:41:38if you hammer those kerbs
00:41:39and sometimes
00:41:40the drivers
00:41:41do knock them about
00:41:42he won L2
00:41:43Schuey out
00:41:44that is to McLaren
00:41:45oh he's
00:41:46showing him
00:41:47standing there
00:41:48as he gets out
00:41:49Michael's reaction
00:41:50he can't believe it
00:41:51some slow-mo's
00:41:52through the
00:41:53east kerb
00:41:54Mika Hakkinen
00:41:55taking those kerbs
00:41:57look at the way
00:41:58that suspension
00:41:59does not move
00:42:00there's some debris
00:42:01in the circuit
00:42:02I wouldn't want to be
00:42:03the one to run out
00:42:04and try and pick that up
00:42:05no not at these speeds
00:42:06very very fast
00:42:07right hander
00:42:09well in the
00:42:10last two weeks
00:42:11Schumey received
00:42:12a fax from
00:42:13Ricardo Zonta
00:42:14apologizing
00:42:15for pushing him off
00:42:16and perhaps the
00:42:17fax machine will be
00:42:18humming again this week
00:42:19well it might well be
00:42:20but I think Fizzi
00:42:21has already said
00:42:22his apologies
00:42:23Fizzi didn't mean it
00:42:24obviously
00:42:25he wanted to get
00:42:26well up in that race
00:42:27he'd have been happy
00:42:28to come second
00:42:29behind Michael Schumacher
00:42:30but Michael backed off
00:42:31because Fizzi
00:42:32couldn't see
00:42:33what David was doing
00:42:34blind sight
00:42:35you can see right across
00:42:36it was very blind
00:42:37across Michael's car
00:42:39Dillon Ross
00:42:40is still holding
00:42:41that magnificent
00:42:42fourth place
00:42:43Barry Keller
00:42:44is pounding him down
00:42:45though
00:42:47three seconds
00:42:48the difference
00:42:49fourth to fifth
00:42:50and Johnny Herbert
00:42:51well up in sixth
00:42:52isn't it strange
00:42:53Johnny Herbert
00:42:54just said he's
00:42:55retiring from
00:42:56road racing
00:42:57from Formula 1
00:42:58at the end of this year
00:42:59and here he is
00:43:00having the driver
00:43:01of the year
00:43:02for Jaguars
00:43:03and at the same time
00:43:04he always seems to
00:43:05come on strong
00:43:06James is driving
00:43:07here we go
00:43:08a bit of overtaking
00:43:09going on
00:43:10Heinz-Harald Frenzen
00:43:15good bit of work
00:43:16Heinz
00:43:17gets by Eddie
00:43:18Eddie Irvine
00:43:19that is
00:43:21remember Frenzen
00:43:22started very deep
00:43:23in the field
00:43:24because his first
00:43:25qualifying time
00:43:26was disallowed
00:43:27by the stewards
00:43:30so like Barry Keller
00:43:31he's had to climb
00:43:32his way through
00:43:33he now moves up to eighth
00:43:37here we go again
00:43:38watching the Jordan
00:43:39overtake
00:43:41the Jag
00:43:45very nice piece
00:43:46of driving there
00:43:48Barry Keller
00:43:49is enjoying this race
00:43:50more than anybody
00:43:51here it is again
00:43:52over the overhead
00:43:53plenty of room
00:43:54nice piece of work
00:43:55there well done
00:43:56no point in upsetting
00:43:57the guy
00:43:59but Rubens is having
00:44:00a wonderful drive
00:44:01remember he's on
00:44:02last place
00:44:03and he's got
00:44:04Rubens is having
00:44:05a wonderful drive
00:44:06remember he's on
00:44:07light fuel tanks
00:44:08so he can really
00:44:09really go for it
00:44:10and he's doing just that
00:44:18Heinz-Harald
00:44:19working over
00:44:20Verstappen now
00:44:22and this would be
00:44:23for seventh place
00:44:25and he's come up
00:44:26from seventeenth
00:44:28so one
00:44:29imagines he's possibly
00:44:30on a two-stop strategy
00:44:31as well
00:44:32running lighter fuel
00:44:34than he is
00:44:43look at him
00:44:44get that tail out
00:44:45this Verstappen
00:44:46drifting it onto the
00:44:48straight going out
00:44:49of the stadium
00:44:51here he goes
00:44:52look at the
00:44:53look at the speed
00:44:54of that Honda engine
00:44:56overtaking of course
00:44:57the Arrow Supertech engine
00:44:59this is just where
00:45:00you do want to touch
00:45:01cars
00:45:05boy and Heinz-Harald
00:45:06just rockets away
00:45:07from that Arrow
00:45:08once he gets clear
00:45:09but we are seeing
00:45:10some overtaking
00:45:11it does good to have
00:45:12some of those quicker guys
00:45:13at the back
00:45:14shows it can be done
00:45:20here he goes again
00:45:23pushes a little bit
00:45:24but not a super job
00:45:25as he does
00:45:26as he goes by
00:45:27not a super job
00:45:28as he does
00:45:29as he goes by
00:45:34so Frentzen
00:45:35on the move
00:45:36now chasing
00:45:37Johnny Herbert
00:45:38to get into the
00:45:39points-paying positions
00:45:40our coverage continues
00:45:41after this word
00:45:44in the Grand Prix
00:45:45of Germany
00:45:46Mike Joy with
00:45:47Derek Bell and
00:45:48Peter Windsor
00:45:51Barry Keller
00:45:52closing in on
00:45:53Dillard Rosser
00:45:54right in front of him
00:45:55there as we go down
00:45:57a bit of opposite luck
00:45:58as he comes out there
00:46:19down into the
00:46:20east curve
00:46:21slowing right down
00:46:23the power of that
00:46:24Arrow
00:46:25super-tank engine
00:46:27now is he going to
00:46:28get him down to this next
00:46:29he should get him
00:46:30coming to the stadium
00:46:31because the exit of
00:46:32the second chicane
00:46:33is somewhat quicker
00:46:34there goes
00:46:35Frentzen past
00:46:36Johnny Herbert
00:46:39at least the fans
00:46:40have got one German
00:46:41to shout about
00:46:42yes, that puts
00:46:43Frentzen up to 6th
00:46:45gives him a wave
00:46:46no, I think he
00:46:47threw it to the
00:46:48left
00:46:49no, I think he
00:46:50threw it to the
00:46:51no, I think he
00:46:52threw his
00:46:53stair-off strip away
00:46:55and or?
00:46:56and or, both
00:46:58down into the
00:46:59stadium
00:47:00no, he doesn't
00:47:01have the speed
00:47:06Derek, it looks
00:47:07like Barry Keller
00:47:08is really
00:47:09oh, a little lock
00:47:10up there on the
00:47:11left front
00:47:12he's really trying
00:47:13but he's fighting
00:47:14oversteer coming
00:47:15off the corner
00:47:16while Dillard
00:47:17Rosser is getting
00:47:18a real good launch
00:47:19off the corner
00:47:21here we go
00:47:22past the pits
00:47:26there's Trulli
00:47:28and there's
00:47:29Dillard Rosser
00:47:30and there's Barry
00:47:31Keller
00:47:32third, fourth
00:47:33and fifth
00:47:34oh, you have
00:47:35the Arrows
00:47:36had a bit of
00:47:37sideways coming
00:47:38on there
00:47:39it does because
00:47:40you get that
00:47:41camber drops away
00:47:42as you come up
00:47:43over the crest
00:47:44and the exit
00:47:45of the corner
00:47:46does slip away
00:47:47onto those
00:47:48rumble strips
00:47:4917 second
00:47:50full revs
00:47:51in fifth or
00:47:52sixth gear
00:47:56you have to say
00:47:57Dillard Rosser
00:47:58is driving really
00:47:59well
00:48:00yes, he is
00:48:01really sliding that
00:48:02tail around
00:48:03coming out of
00:48:04those chicanes
00:48:09oh, good move
00:48:10great move
00:48:11great move
00:48:12as he goes
00:48:13into the
00:48:14Jim Clark
00:48:15chicane
00:48:16I should have
00:48:17said
00:48:19into the East
00:48:20Curve
00:48:25so that puts
00:48:26Barrichello up
00:48:27to fourth
00:48:28and in chase
00:48:29of the yellow
00:48:30Jordan of Yarno
00:48:31Trulli
00:48:39Hockenden and
00:48:40Coulthard run
00:48:41one, two
00:48:42they are seven
00:48:43seconds ahead of
00:48:44Trulli
00:48:45this is the
00:48:46overtaking maneuver
00:48:47down the inside
00:48:48very clean
00:48:49no heroics there
00:48:50into the East
00:48:51Curve
00:48:52then a little bit
00:48:53of curbing going
00:48:54through here
00:48:55then gets the car
00:48:56back under control
00:48:57and tries to get away
00:48:58and that's when you
00:48:59shut your eyes to
00:49:00what's behind
00:49:01and just go for it
00:49:02look at this
00:49:03gaggle behind
00:49:07looked like Irvine
00:49:08was having a go
00:49:09at Herbert there
00:49:10coming into the
00:49:11stadium
00:49:12that was
00:49:13Ralph Schumacher
00:49:14you saw in the
00:49:15white car
00:49:17the Saubers
00:49:18have been nose
00:49:19to tail
00:49:20through this
00:49:21pretty much
00:49:22through this
00:49:23entire event
00:49:24and even appeared
00:49:25to bang wheels
00:49:26through one of the
00:49:27chicanes
00:49:32here we go
00:49:33that's Verstappen
00:49:34Herbert
00:49:35Irvine
00:49:36and Villeneuve
00:49:38followed by
00:49:39Ralph Schumacher
00:49:42then it's
00:49:43Zonta
00:49:44Wurtz
00:49:45Deniz
00:49:46Bob
00:49:47and Jenson Button
00:49:48I think
00:49:49I can see the white car
00:49:50there
00:49:51of course Button
00:49:52had to start at the
00:49:53back of the grid
00:49:54because he couldn't
00:49:55get his car fired
00:49:56up on the
00:49:57warming up lap
00:50:04Heinz-Harald
00:50:05has lowered
00:50:06fastest lap
00:50:07of the race
00:50:09and he's moved
00:50:10up into the points
00:50:11up into 6th
00:50:14but he trails
00:50:15some 10 seconds
00:50:17there your leading
00:50:18pair coming towards
00:50:19us now
00:50:20Mika Hakkinen
00:50:21leading David Coulthard
00:50:22David this time
00:50:23unlike Austria
00:50:24where he fell back
00:50:25from Mika this time
00:50:26he's pretty close
00:50:27keeping the clean air
00:50:28oh dear
00:50:29Johnny Herbert
00:50:30I think it's
00:50:31Johnny
00:50:32yeah
00:50:33that's a shame
00:50:34gosh
00:50:35Herbert had
00:50:36such a great race
00:50:37going
00:50:38he was doing
00:50:39such an amazing
00:50:40job there
00:50:41keeping it
00:50:42but you saw
00:50:43he did go back
00:50:44very sad
00:50:45he's been doing a
00:50:46great job
00:50:47all weekend
00:50:52look at the way
00:50:53those wheels
00:50:54look at the tyre flexing
00:50:55the only thing that
00:50:56works on the car
00:50:57is the tyre wall
00:50:58flexing
00:51:02well it's been
00:51:03it's been tipped
00:51:04that Herbert is
00:51:05talking to as many
00:51:06as 6 different
00:51:07kart teams
00:51:08about a ride
00:51:09for next year
00:51:10in that US
00:51:11series
00:51:12he was at the
00:51:13street ride
00:51:14shopping
00:51:16so we'll see
00:51:19the advantage
00:51:20the McLarens have
00:51:21now over
00:51:22Trulli's Jordan
00:51:23is 10 seconds
00:51:2411 seconds
00:51:25back from
00:51:26Mika Hakkinen
00:51:27and 10 from
00:51:28David Coulthard
00:51:29back to
00:51:30Trulli
00:51:32now it's really
00:51:33going to be down
00:51:34to the pit stop
00:51:35that they make
00:51:36as to whether
00:51:37David can get ahead
00:51:38because obviously
00:51:39he's hanging right
00:51:40in there behind Mika
00:51:41as I said
00:51:43Rubens right
00:51:44up the back
00:51:45of Trulli
00:51:46this could be an
00:51:47overtaking opportunity
00:51:48going down into the
00:51:49stadium
00:51:50going around the
00:51:51east curve now
00:51:52far end of the
00:51:53circuit
00:51:54he's got a good run
00:51:55and he's tucked
00:51:56right up tight
00:51:57behind him to get
00:51:58that slip stream
00:51:59but the Honda
00:52:00is quick
00:52:01isn't giving him
00:52:02too much room
00:52:03as they come into
00:52:04the Jim Clark
00:52:05chicane
00:52:09it's a good place
00:52:10to try and overtake
00:52:11as I said just now
00:52:12he's down into the
00:52:13stadium but you've got
00:52:14to carry that speed
00:52:15out of the center
00:52:16chicane
00:52:17now has he got it
00:52:18he's going to
00:52:19pop out is he
00:52:20he's having a look
00:52:21no
00:52:22darting about
00:52:23he's really
00:52:24really close
00:52:26look at the
00:52:27sirens in the
00:52:28stadium
00:52:29they want that
00:52:30Ferrari to go
00:52:31through
00:52:32they've got no
00:52:33Michael Schumacher
00:52:34in a Ferrari
00:52:35so he may as well
00:52:36go for the other
00:52:37man
00:52:38those horns are
00:52:39almost as loud
00:52:40certainly the loudest
00:52:41horns we get anywhere
00:52:42in the world
00:52:43that's for sure
00:52:51I don't think Rubens
00:52:52needs that board
00:52:53I think he's well aware
00:52:54of just how far
00:52:55truly is ahead of him
00:52:56third of the way
00:52:57through the race
00:52:58here we go
00:52:59he's going to get him
00:53:00into the Jim Clark
00:53:01chicane he's got to
00:53:02pop out now
00:53:03there he goes
00:53:04great bit of overtaking
00:53:05this is of course
00:53:06what we weaned on
00:53:07in racing in Europe
00:53:08in these stadiums
00:53:09like Hockenheim
00:53:10is that drafting
00:53:11and then slipping
00:53:12by under braking
00:53:16look at the crowd
00:53:17sorry Mike
00:53:18look at them
00:53:19out there
00:53:20truly in that case
00:53:21isn't he pretty
00:53:22powerless to do
00:53:23anything
00:53:24if Barrichello
00:53:25gets to the
00:53:26has the inside
00:53:27coming into the
00:53:28chicane
00:53:29does the driver
00:53:30being overtaken
00:53:31have any options
00:53:32he doesn't really
00:53:33I mean the only
00:53:34other thing is
00:53:35the possibility
00:53:36of him out
00:53:37braking himself
00:53:38it breaks me sometimes
00:53:39when people will not
00:53:40let somebody else
00:53:41by when they
00:53:42pull them up
00:53:43he knows Rubens
00:53:44come up from
00:53:4518th place
00:53:46he's on a charge
00:53:47but truly also knows
00:53:48that he must be
00:53:49on low fuel
00:53:50and therefore he'll
00:53:51get by after the
00:53:52fuel stops
00:53:53so why push it
00:53:54and the team manager
00:53:55will be telling him
00:53:56yes
00:53:57Eddie Jordan
00:53:58will be saying
00:53:59he's obviously on
00:54:00a two stop strategy
00:54:01take it easy
00:54:02let him go
00:54:03we'll pass him
00:54:04back in the pit lane
00:54:05fastest lap
00:54:06for Heinz Hauer
00:54:07look at Frentzen
00:54:08coming up
00:54:09he's really flying
00:54:13it's McLaren 1-2
00:54:15Jordan now
00:54:16in 3rd and 6th
00:54:18Ferrari 4th
00:54:19Arrows 5th
00:54:20and 7th
00:54:22Jaguar 8th
00:54:23VAR 9th
00:54:24and 11th
00:54:26Williams
00:54:27which have had
00:54:28quite a tough weekend
00:54:2910th and 18th
00:54:35excuse me
00:54:36let's make that now
00:54:373rd
00:54:384th last time
00:54:39on our last scoring
00:54:40rundown
00:54:41Ferrachello now
00:54:423rd
00:54:43here's a replay of the
00:54:44pass
00:54:45here it is
00:54:46yes look at him
00:54:47goes straight by
00:54:48nice and clean
00:54:49tucks in front
00:54:50of here we go again
00:54:51here we go
00:54:52plenty of room
00:54:53no too close
00:54:54he then eases
00:54:55across the road
00:54:56in front of Trulli
00:54:57thank you very much
00:54:58and going through
00:54:59doesn't really jeopardize
00:55:00his driving into the
00:55:01turn
00:55:02and away he goes
00:55:03might not be so easy
00:55:04if it was the last lap
00:55:06so at one third
00:55:07distance
00:55:08Ferrachello has
00:55:0912 seconds
00:55:10to make up on
00:55:11David Coulthard
00:55:12to have
00:55:13a chance at
00:55:14second place
00:55:16let's see if he can
00:55:17close in
00:55:18when we come back
00:55:20the McLaren's
00:55:21lead here at

00:55:23as you're watching
00:55:24Formula 1
00:55:25on Fox Sports
00:55:26Net
00:55:27the German Grand Prix
00:55:29a first turn
00:55:30first lap accident
00:55:32has eliminated
00:55:33front row starter
00:55:34Michael Schumacher
00:55:35and Giancarlo
00:55:36Fisichella
00:55:37here's another look
00:55:39when you see Schumacher
00:55:40on the left of your screen
00:55:41David Coulthard
00:55:42pushes slightly him across
00:55:43and he touches
00:55:44Fisichella
00:55:45Michael didn't know
00:55:46he was there
00:55:47and David I'm sure
00:55:48didn't know Fisichella
00:55:49was there
00:55:50here we go again
00:55:51Coulthard over
00:55:52completely on the right side
00:55:53then Michael has to
00:55:54brake because of David
00:55:55and that allows
00:55:56Fisichella who thinks
00:55:57he's going to have
00:55:58a nice fast turn
00:55:59and taps Michael
00:56:00and off they both go
00:56:01at very high speed
00:56:02and the final ends
00:56:03were from Michael's
00:56:04left rear tyre
00:56:05which was conquered
00:56:06by Fisichella's wing
00:56:07here we go again
00:56:08watch Mick Hacken
00:56:09go through
00:56:10Coulthard goes to block
00:56:11Michael
00:56:12a bit like a chess game
00:56:13Michael moves across
00:56:14because of David
00:56:15and Fisichella
00:56:16taps him up the back
00:56:17end of the race
00:56:18for two of the leading cars
00:56:32so Gerard with Rubens
00:56:33a look at the points
00:56:34coming in
00:56:35Schumacher's six point lead
00:56:36over David Coulthard
00:56:37at the World Drivers' Championship
00:56:38he is now in jeopardy
00:56:43in fact
00:56:44we could leave here
00:56:45with McLaren drivers
00:56:46in the lead
00:56:47and tied for second
00:56:49very depressing
00:56:50if you're a Ferrari fan
00:56:51I have to admit
00:56:52they're not really good
00:56:53for the championship
00:56:54but it certainly
00:56:55will be close whatever
00:56:56last lap was a 44.6
00:56:58very quick lap for Rubens
00:57:00and Heinz
00:57:01our friends
00:57:02are right on the back
00:57:03of Pedro de la Rosa
00:57:04there
00:57:12activity in the Ferrari
00:57:13for Rubens
00:57:15two stop strategy
00:57:16they would be
00:57:17let's see if Jordan
00:57:18do the same
00:57:19for Heinz Harald
00:57:22there's Irvine
00:57:24with Villeneuve
00:57:25and Ralf Schumacher
00:57:26right behind him
00:57:27there's Zonta
00:57:28there's Wurz
00:57:31here they are
00:57:32Ferrari getting ready
00:57:33for one of those
00:57:34very quick stops
00:57:36and here he is
00:57:47very good stop
00:57:48seven seconds
00:57:49that is right on target
00:57:50for a two stop strategy
00:57:52and how much time
00:57:53has he lost
00:57:54well he lost
00:57:55something like
00:57:57I guess 22 seconds
00:57:5823 seconds
00:57:59super bit of pit work
00:58:00there by Ferrari
00:58:03down to 6th place now
00:58:06but he's ahead
00:58:07of this little group
00:58:08which is just as well
00:58:10when Barrichello
00:58:11came past last time
00:58:12Derek he was
00:58:1313.8 seconds
00:58:14off the lead
00:58:15this time as he came
00:58:16into the pit lane
00:58:17that cost him
00:58:183 seconds there
00:58:19minus 16.4
00:58:20we'll see where he goes
00:58:21next time by
00:58:22to give you the sense
00:58:23of the full effect
00:58:24of making that extra
00:58:25pit stop
00:58:26of course he will have
00:58:27fresh rubber
00:58:28unlike the other guys
00:58:29in front of him
00:58:30but he will have
00:58:31much the same fuel
00:58:32as they've got
00:58:33probably a little bit more
00:58:34than they're running
00:58:35Ralf Schumacher
00:58:40remember they get the tyres
00:58:41and tyre warmers
00:58:42in the pit lane
00:58:43get them up to
00:58:44a good 100 degrees
00:58:45before the lads go out
00:58:46so they can operate
00:58:47straight away
00:58:48at the maximum
00:58:49driving skills
00:58:51look just next to
00:58:52his left glove
00:58:53and you'll see
00:58:54the lights well
00:58:55next time we see
00:58:56that in car view
00:58:57the lights light up
00:58:58for his shift indicator
00:58:59Frenzen over the back
00:59:00of Pedro de la Rosa
00:59:01they're having both
00:59:02caught up
00:59:03Jarno Trulli
00:59:04Trulli backing off
00:59:05a little bit
00:59:08not intentionally
00:59:09I'm sure
00:59:10here they come
00:59:11this is the infield
00:59:12section of the stadium
00:59:14and we may see
00:59:15Frenzen in the pits
00:59:16this lap
00:59:21here he comes
00:59:22Heinz-Arnold Frenzen
00:59:25how frustrating
00:59:26to drive right up
00:59:27to the field
00:59:28and then have to go in
00:59:29and lose 20 seconds
00:59:42that wasn't
00:59:43quite as quick
00:59:44as you can see
00:59:45second half
00:59:46start
00:59:47that wasn't
00:59:48quite as quick
00:59:49as you can see
00:59:50second half slower
00:59:51than the Ferrari stop
00:59:52here comes a group now
00:59:53here comes somebody
00:59:54be nice for
00:59:55Heinz-Arnold to get out
00:59:56will he get out before
00:59:57no, no
00:59:58bit too much speed
00:59:59there being carried
01:00:00oh, just gets out
01:00:01but the other car
01:00:02should be carrying
01:00:03far more momentum
01:00:05as he go by
01:00:06look at the acceleration
01:00:07of that
01:00:08Giordani
01:00:09just came out
01:00:12they're hoping
01:00:13that of course
01:00:14here he goes
01:00:15hairy bit of braking
01:00:16going on there
01:00:17between the
01:00:18the Arrows
01:00:19and the Jordans
01:00:20now of course
01:00:21Heinz-Arnold
01:00:22should be ok
01:00:23a little bit more fuel
01:00:24but
01:00:25he will have
01:00:26the new rubber
01:00:33imagine being the guy
01:00:34behind you
01:00:35come out
01:00:36see the fellow
01:00:37in front of you
01:00:38come out of the pitch
01:00:39you think
01:00:40I've got him
01:00:41you go down
01:00:42the straight
01:00:43and you can't
01:00:44Heinz-Arnold
01:00:45had already come through
01:00:46the field
01:00:47so
01:00:48you can't expect him
01:00:49to stay behind for long
01:00:50and we're probably
01:00:51what Derek
01:00:52five laps away
01:00:53from cars
01:00:54hitting the run of one stop
01:00:55at least five laps away
01:00:56if we start
01:00:57those pit stops
01:00:58at the midpoint
01:00:59just past the midpoint
01:01:00of the race
01:01:01yes indeed
01:01:02of course it depends
01:01:03how much more
01:01:04you can get
01:01:05it's a very high
01:01:06fuel
01:01:07it's a very high
01:01:08what's the word
01:01:09consumption
01:01:10consumption certainly
01:01:11that's what I was
01:01:12trying to say
01:01:13so
01:01:14you expect to come in
01:01:15right on the
01:01:16hard distance
01:01:17so we're running
01:01:18lap 20
01:01:1925 laps left
01:01:20to go
01:01:21that 26 at the bottom
01:01:22a truly sign
01:01:23as he came past
01:01:24indicating laps to go
01:01:25he's completed
01:01:2619
01:01:29and
01:01:30it's
01:01:31it's actually
01:01:32quite nice
01:01:33that
01:01:34that our world
01:01:35peak coverage
01:01:36provided by
01:01:37German television
01:01:38is not focusing
01:01:39strictly on the
01:01:40Mercedes-powered cars
01:01:41at the front of the field
01:01:43they're running
01:01:44a second and a half
01:01:45apart
01:01:47and there has been
01:01:48no change
01:01:49and very little drama
01:01:50if any
01:01:51among the two leaders
01:01:55I'm sure David
01:01:56will be
01:01:57he's keeping
01:01:58just that distance
01:01:59behind so he doesn't
01:02:00get in the slipstream
01:02:01too much to
01:02:02upset the balance
01:02:03of his car
01:02:04and of course
01:02:05cause overheating
01:02:06nothing more than
01:02:07than sitting behind
01:02:08somebody to get
01:02:09overheating problems
01:02:10with the car
01:02:1116 wins
01:02:12and
01:02:1325 holes
01:02:14David you can see
01:02:15the gap there
01:02:16and it'll be down really
01:02:17just to how slick
01:02:18they are on these pitstops
01:02:19and how quick
01:02:20Coulthard
01:02:21can do the lap
01:02:22before he goes into the lap
01:02:23afterwards
01:02:24and whether he can get ahead
01:02:25Johnny Herbert
01:02:26scrolling back
01:02:27after a warm day's work
01:02:28and a good day's work
01:02:32Root having a real
01:02:33good go there
01:02:35that's Wurz and Zonta
01:02:36I believe
01:02:37and Zonta at the head
01:02:38of that pack
01:02:39then Alexander Wurz
01:02:40Talbot
01:02:41having overtaken
01:02:42Dineen
01:02:44This is Verstappen
01:02:45with Eddie Irvine
01:02:46Bilder
01:02:47and
01:02:48Ralf Schumacher
01:02:49they're having a real
01:02:50good go there
01:02:51what a beautiful
01:02:52Dice going all the way
01:02:53through the field
01:02:54Boy Hertz there
01:02:55and Salo
01:02:56almost
01:02:57banging
01:02:58banging wheels
01:03:01That's going to be
01:03:02Nick Heitfeld
01:03:03at the tail end
01:03:04of that group
01:03:05in the process
01:03:06Lazy behind
01:03:07Marc Chenet
01:03:08Lazy staying at the
01:03:09tail end
01:03:10that's going to be
01:03:11one of the worst
01:03:12races
01:03:16ooh
01:03:17bit of a lock up there
01:03:19going for the
01:03:20Sachs curve
01:03:21quite difficult there
01:03:22because there is that
01:03:23camber on the road too
01:03:24so you always push it
01:03:25going in
01:03:26you try to go in
01:03:27deeper than possibly
01:03:28you should
01:03:29on the brakes
01:03:36with a Jim Clark
01:03:37chicane
01:03:39absolutely
01:03:40flying now
01:03:45Barrichello is now
01:03:46a reset fastest lap
01:03:47of the race
01:03:48with Derrick on
01:03:49full tanks
01:03:50he had just come in
01:03:51and topped off
01:03:52so that's
01:03:53he's only three laps
01:03:54after his pit stop
01:03:55and again he lowers
01:03:56the fast lap standard
01:03:57of course
01:03:58being on fresh tires
01:03:59as well
01:04:00so that would have
01:04:01the counteract
01:04:02the fact he had
01:04:03the extra weight
01:04:04I suppose
01:04:05now we wanted to
01:04:06give you the effect
01:04:07of his pit stop
01:04:081.4 seconds
01:04:09behind Mika Hakkinen
01:04:11who has held
01:04:12a fairly steady pace
01:04:13and Barrichello
01:04:14after completing
01:04:15that lap
01:04:17stands at
01:04:18minus 33.6
01:04:20so the effect
01:04:21of his pit stop
01:04:22in and out the pit
01:04:23roughly
01:04:2417 seconds
01:04:26to make that
01:04:27added pit stop
01:04:32activity in the
01:04:33Sauber pit
01:04:34as we come around
01:04:35for 21 laps
01:04:36you are watching
01:04:37for the one
01:04:38on Fox Sportsnet

01:05:50we're a lot of offy lockies
01:05:51he goes through there
01:05:52does Jack
01:05:55the two blondes
01:05:56out there having a battle
01:05:58the battle of the blondes
01:06:06look at the power
01:06:07of that Honda
01:06:10here's another one
01:06:12has a look down
01:06:13on the outside
01:06:16Eddie was trying to
01:06:17protect his line on the inside
01:06:18but Jack goes around
01:06:19the outside
01:06:20pretty good move
01:06:21because that gives him
01:06:22a better line into the turn
01:06:23but you can see the bumps
01:06:24as he goes across
01:06:25here he goes again
01:06:26now he's going to touch
01:06:27the kerb
01:06:28boom
01:06:29that upsets him a bit more
01:06:32he's not a high G4
01:06:33circuit
01:06:34looking
01:06:35coming off those kerbs
01:06:36good gracious
01:06:39and Villeneuve will give
01:06:40two more years to B.A.R.
01:06:42he has options
01:06:43in that deal
01:06:44we're told
01:06:45that if the team
01:06:46cannot become a contender
01:06:47he can exit
01:06:48and he'll be
01:06:49the second highest
01:06:50paid driver
01:06:51in F1
01:06:5420 little
01:06:55beauty dollars a year
01:06:5620 million a year
01:07:00that's the sort of money
01:07:01I get
01:07:02doing this show
01:07:03but of course
01:07:04at the same time
01:07:05he doesn't do any
01:07:06P.R. work
01:07:07he hates doing P.R.
01:07:08that's why he wouldn't
01:07:09go to McLaren
01:07:10he hates doing P.R.
01:07:11everybody getting ready
01:07:12to pit B.A.R.
01:07:13or should I say
01:07:14Arrows
01:07:15and now Jaguar's
01:07:16getting ready
01:07:17halfway point
01:07:1822 laps
01:07:19have been completed
01:07:21so we're just past
01:07:22halfway
01:07:25as they come around
01:07:26to complete 23
01:07:29and we'll see a lot of
01:07:30pit stops
01:07:31and I imagine
01:07:32a few drivers
01:07:33looking to get out
01:07:34of this queue
01:07:40they'd like to
01:07:41stop somebody
01:07:42else's exhaust
01:07:43for a while
01:07:44Bert's leading
01:07:45Salo here
01:07:48I tell you what
01:07:49when you're that close
01:07:50behind somebody
01:07:51those fumes do
01:07:52get pretty bad
01:07:53after a while
01:07:54when you get to
01:07:5512 hour races
01:07:56it's horrible
01:07:57all you're doing
01:07:58is breathing in
01:07:59somebody else's exhaust
01:08:05now we've not
01:08:06seen Barrichello
01:08:07but he's been
01:08:08climbing his way
01:08:09back up through
01:08:10he's now just
01:08:11two seconds
01:08:12back of De La Rosa
01:08:13and up to 5th place
01:08:14after his stop
01:08:15so here's Verstappen
01:08:165th place driver
01:08:17this is just at the
01:08:18halfway point
01:08:19lap 23
01:08:27Jaguar set up
01:08:28VAR is at the ready
01:08:30this is where
01:08:31Verstappen had that
01:08:32awful fire
01:08:33when he drove
01:08:34in the medicine team
01:08:35back in the early 90s
01:08:37now Jaguar was ready
01:08:38for Eddie Irvine
01:08:39but he stayed out
01:08:40chose not to come
01:08:41in that lap
01:08:47Verstappen out
01:08:49he can get out
01:08:50just in front there
01:09:02meanwhile
01:09:03the McLaren parade
01:09:04continues at the front
01:09:05of the pack
01:09:061.7 seconds
01:09:07now separate
01:09:09Mika and David
01:09:11this makes you realise
01:09:12how badly
01:09:13Formula 1 needs
01:09:14Michael Schumacher
01:09:16not much else
01:09:17happens unless he's out there
01:09:19well we talked
01:09:20at the top of the day
01:09:21about this being
01:09:22the home race
01:09:23for the Schumacher brothers
01:09:24it is of course
01:09:25for Frentzen and
01:09:26for half of this pairing
01:09:27Mercedes
01:09:28the engine manufacturer
01:09:29for McLaren
01:09:30this is
01:09:31very much an important race
01:09:32for them
01:09:33BMW as well
01:09:34although their fortunes
01:09:35have not been
01:09:37very good this weekend
01:09:39I don't quite understand
01:09:40why Ralf Schumacher
01:09:41has gone back
01:09:42quite so far off his stop
01:09:43changed the mixture
01:09:44they're telling
01:09:45Mika Häkkinen
01:09:47because there is no rush
01:09:48let's try and drain this one out
01:09:49so we don't have to come in
01:09:50for so much fuel
01:09:52hang it on there
01:09:53as long as the tyres
01:09:54are running well
01:09:55as we know
01:09:56it's not that tough on tyres
01:10:04Barrichello on the charge
01:10:05Barrichello on the charge
01:10:13a bit too ambitious
01:10:14that time
01:10:15I thought he was
01:10:16quite close enough
01:10:17but he'll certainly
01:10:18have a look at him
01:10:19down at the east curve
01:10:20looking over
01:10:21de la Rosa for fourth
01:10:22Eddie Irvine
01:10:23is in the pits
01:10:24at lap 24
01:10:25so is Nick Heidfeld
01:10:26for front
01:10:31we hear there's a spectator
01:10:32wandering around
01:10:33on the track
01:10:34there he is
01:10:35look at him
01:10:36oh my goodness
01:10:37what is happening
01:10:38this is crazy
01:10:39what is this stupid guy
01:10:40doing
01:10:41look he's
01:10:42falling backwards
01:10:43down the track
01:10:44what the drivers
01:10:45must think
01:10:46he's going across
01:10:47the track
01:10:48what is he doing
01:10:49well full course
01:10:50yellow
01:10:51yellow flags
01:10:52at the wave
01:10:53safety car is out
01:10:54and the police van
01:10:55will likely be right
01:10:56behind it
01:10:57well they're doing
01:10:58sort of something
01:10:59like 180 miles
01:11:00an hour
01:11:01as they go by
01:11:02this lunatic
01:11:03safety car
01:11:04come out
01:11:05before they lock
01:11:06this loony up
01:11:07take him back
01:11:08to the bin
01:11:09that is absolutely
01:11:10stupid
01:11:11I'm surprised
01:11:12a corner worker
01:11:13couldn't have
01:11:14grabbed him
01:11:15Jarno Trulli
01:11:16is in
01:11:17de la Rosa
01:11:18coming in for
01:11:19his second stop
01:11:20as well
01:11:21under the yellow
01:11:22not a bad move
01:11:23there for Ferrari
01:11:24and McLaren
01:11:25are getting ready too
01:11:31well it's
01:11:32everyone is set up
01:11:33the caution
01:11:34the full course caution
01:11:35has changed
01:11:36the complexion
01:11:37of the race
01:11:38certainly everyone
01:11:39Derek wants to get in
01:11:40under yellow
01:11:41absolutely
01:11:42here he is
01:11:43he's still
01:11:44ambling along
01:11:45look
01:11:46I think he's
01:11:47the bus doesn't
01:11:48stop here
01:11:49no he's ambling
01:11:50back to the
01:11:51pit area
01:11:52I want to have
01:11:53a really good look
01:11:54at this lot
01:11:55absolutely crazy
01:11:56they don't have
01:11:57the marshals
01:11:58as you said
01:11:59they have the marshals
01:12:00just come out
01:12:01they're probably
01:12:02having quite a chuckle
01:12:03about this
01:12:04they go I just
01:12:05don't believe it
01:12:06and of course
01:12:07they just know it
01:12:08they're just thinking
01:12:09about the beneficial
01:12:10side of it
01:12:11a lot of them
01:12:12are going to come in
01:12:13anyway
01:12:14and it's allowed
01:12:15Ferrari to come in
01:12:16and McLaren to come in
01:12:17which means
01:12:18they'll be on
01:12:19even Stevens
01:12:20when they go out
01:12:21and with a pace car
01:12:22it'll be a very
01:12:23very interesting
01:12:24restart won't it
01:12:25here they come
01:12:26the McLaren's in
01:12:27yeah with the
01:12:28safety car out
01:12:29and gathering up
01:12:30with the exception
01:12:31of let's see
01:12:32Heidfeld
01:12:33Verstappen
01:12:34Irvine
01:12:36who had taken
01:12:37on enough fuel
01:12:38presumably to go
01:12:39the distance
01:12:40they were just in
01:12:41would have no need
01:12:42to stop so this will
01:12:43greatly shuffle
01:12:44the running order
01:12:45as some of those
01:12:46cars are still out
01:12:47trying to catch up
01:12:48the safety car
01:12:49as the two leaders
01:12:50will make their stop
01:12:51well Haakon is
01:12:52making his
01:12:53David I don't think
01:12:54has been in yet
01:12:55so we just see
01:12:56what a disadvantage
01:12:57that is to David
01:12:58whether it's really
01:12:59a bad break
01:13:00or a good break
01:13:02have a close look
01:13:03at the tyre walls
01:13:04in use here at Haakon
01:13:05you see they're
01:13:06three or four rows
01:13:07deep and linked
01:13:08together and
01:13:09lined in the front
01:13:10as Barrichello
01:13:11makes his stop
01:13:12with a flexible
01:13:13barrier
01:13:14a lot of talk
01:13:15in the state
01:13:16these days about
01:13:17concrete and
01:13:18steel walls
01:13:19and about tyre
01:13:20barriers and
01:13:21these seem to be
01:13:22very effective
01:13:23here at Haakon
01:13:24without causing
01:13:25a lot of damage
01:13:26as long as they
01:13:27have that
01:13:28band on the
01:13:29outside
01:13:30to support the tyres
01:13:31so they don't
01:13:32break up and
01:13:33you don't do what
01:13:34Michael Schumacher
01:13:35did to sort of
01:13:36go between them
01:13:37last year of course
01:13:38at Silverstone
01:13:39is what I'm
01:13:40referring to
01:13:41right
01:13:42there there's
01:13:43David
01:13:51the full dark
01:13:52will tip this time
01:13:55and Derek
01:13:56this may be
01:13:57a disadvantage
01:13:58for David
01:13:59because as he pits
01:14:00the cars that have
01:14:01already pitted
01:14:02under the caution
01:14:03they'll be zooming
01:14:04around the track
01:14:05trying to catch up
01:14:06the safety car
01:14:07and I don't want
01:14:08to speculate too much
01:14:09but it's likely
01:14:10David's going to
01:14:11lose his second
01:14:12position and be
01:14:13mired deep in the
01:14:14pack
01:14:15he's going to lose
01:14:16a ton of it
01:14:17yeah
01:14:18because Lowe
01:14:19Haakon is right
01:14:20behind David
01:14:21and is in fact
01:14:22a lap ahead of
01:14:23David
01:14:24or will be
01:14:25or not quite
01:14:26spectator
01:14:27is about the
01:14:28nicest term we can
01:14:29use
01:14:30is now in custody
01:14:32and so
01:14:33we won't have
01:14:34this yellow flag
01:14:35situation for
01:14:36much longer
01:14:37but it has certainly
01:14:38changed the face
01:14:39of this race
01:14:40and it will really
01:14:41enter into the
01:14:42fortunes of David
01:14:43Coulthard
01:14:44here come the
01:14:45marshals
01:14:46the lead
01:14:48he's still waving
01:14:49yeah he keeps
01:14:50waving his jacket
01:14:51that's what this has
01:14:52done to David
01:14:53Coulthard
01:14:54David Coulthard
01:14:55is going to be
01:14:56behind all that
01:14:57lot as well
01:14:58if he's not careful
01:14:59Rubens is right up
01:15:00behind him
01:15:01he's right behind
01:15:02there's truly
01:15:03I assume
01:15:04there's Rubens
01:15:05and David's going
01:15:06to come in
01:15:07he's going to go out
01:15:08in the middle of the
01:15:09pack
01:15:10I mean that is so
01:15:11cruel
01:15:12why they couldn't
01:15:13have brought them
01:15:14both in together
01:15:15I don't know
01:15:16look at
01:15:17that
01:15:18sickened David
01:15:19he does have some
01:15:20break
01:15:21yeah
01:15:22I can't see the
01:15:23advantages of
01:15:24anybody who's
01:15:25watched a whole lot
01:15:26of auto racing in
01:15:27America knows that
01:15:28when the full course
01:15:29caution comes out
01:15:30if you don't
01:15:31pit the first time
01:15:32by
01:15:33you are going to end
01:15:34up at the back of
01:15:35the pack
01:15:36so it is a very
01:15:37very strange
01:15:38situation
01:15:42because here comes
01:15:43the pack pass
01:15:44with the safety car
01:15:45now not all of them
01:15:46some of them are still
01:15:47trying to catch that
01:15:48back up
01:15:49well the four miles
01:15:50is such a long lap
01:15:51it takes a lot to
01:15:52get everybody up
01:15:53and that's to
01:15:54David's advantage
01:15:55but he's going to be
01:15:56well behind that
01:15:57group at the front
01:15:58which there he is
01:15:59he's right behind that
01:16:00lot
01:16:01so he'll be what
01:16:02seventh
01:16:03he's right in the
01:16:04middle of that lot
01:16:05yeah
01:16:06David's right
01:16:07he's right
01:16:08he's behind that
01:16:09second Jordan
01:16:10I think
01:16:13there's David down
01:16:14there behind the
01:16:15Jordan
01:16:16so the
01:16:17the caution flag
01:16:18has certainly
01:16:19changed the
01:16:20complexion of
01:16:21this race
01:16:23McKinnon
01:16:24made a pit stop
01:16:25when the pits
01:16:26were first open
01:16:27as did Jarno
01:16:28Trulli
01:16:29they will be at
01:16:30the front of the
01:16:31field on this
01:16:32restart
01:16:33David Coulthard
01:16:34waited a lap to
01:16:35pit and that's
01:16:36going to be costly
01:16:37and there are the
01:16:38remains of the
01:16:39first lap accident
01:16:40which took out
01:16:41Michael Schumacher
01:16:42and Giancarlo
01:16:43Fisichella
01:16:44who both started
01:16:45in the front two
01:16:46rows and had
01:16:47high hopes for the
01:16:48day
01:16:49in two weeks time
01:16:50can Michael Schumacher
01:16:51score his first
01:16:52points in what
01:16:53will now be four
01:16:54starts
01:16:55find out two weeks
01:16:56from today
01:16:5710am your local
01:16:58time
01:16:59except in Florida
01:17:00and the San Francisco
01:17:01Bay Area
01:17:02Sunday August 13th
01:17:03the Grand Prix of
01:17:04Hungary on Fox
01:17:05Sportsnet
01:17:08there's the running
01:17:09order
01:17:10Coulthard comes out
01:17:11of the pits in
01:17:12sixth place
01:17:13behind Trulli
01:17:14Barrichello
01:17:15De La Rosa
01:17:16and Frenson
01:17:17that really is
01:17:18really really
01:17:19cruel
01:17:20it does show
01:17:21that McLaren
01:17:22have only got
01:17:23the one refueling
01:17:24rig set up
01:17:25which seems in some
01:17:26ways I suppose
01:17:27that's what they all
01:17:28have because they
01:17:29come in separately
01:17:30normally
01:17:31but it shows that
01:17:32you really need
01:17:33two refueling
01:17:34set ups
01:17:35and then they
01:17:36would have had
01:17:37such an advantage
01:17:38Barrichello
01:17:39gained a lot
01:17:40because he went
01:17:41in for his
01:17:42second stop
01:17:43while they did
01:17:44that as well
01:17:45and that is
01:17:46rain coming
01:17:47over the city
01:17:48nearby
01:17:49this could be
01:17:50a chaotic finish
01:17:51to this race
01:17:52if they all have
01:17:53to start
01:17:54pitting for
01:17:55wet tyres
01:17:56look at Mika
01:17:57sliding around
01:17:58a bit
01:17:59doing a little
01:18:00curb hopping
01:18:01and the safety car
01:18:02will be in
01:18:03at the end
01:18:04of this lap
01:18:05which would be
01:18:06lap 28
01:18:07there he goes
01:18:08so 17
01:18:09laps to go
01:18:10and the
01:18:11safety car
01:18:12will be in
01:18:13at the end
01:18:14of this lap
01:18:15which would be
01:18:16lap 28
01:18:17there he goes
01:18:18ooh
01:18:19bit of looking
01:18:20up wind
01:18:21on there
01:18:22Ferrari and
01:18:23one of the
01:18:24Williams
01:18:25that's what
01:18:26you don't need
01:18:27with a long
01:18:28straight ahead
01:18:29of you
01:18:30look at the
01:18:31Ferrari having
01:18:32a look at
01:18:33the inside of
01:18:34Trulli
01:18:35has he got
01:18:36the speed to
01:18:37go by
01:18:38but Trulli
01:18:39is not giving
01:18:40him any road
01:18:41round the
01:18:42outside is
01:18:43he gonna get
01:18:44him
01:18:45no he's
01:18:46not going
01:18:47No, he's not going to get in there either.
01:18:50But the De La Rosa went by Heinz-Arnold Frentzen.
01:18:53Excellent bit of work there.
01:18:55And a lot of jumbling in the order with these pitstops.
01:18:58Jensen Button up to 8th, Jacques Villeneuve back to 9th,
01:19:01Zonta 10th, Verstappen 11th, Salo, Wurz,
01:19:06Genet, Irvine back to 15th in all this.
01:19:11Meanwhile, Mika Hakkinen screams away
01:19:13because everybody behind him is trying to out-fumble each other.
01:19:16And Mika runs away with it.
01:19:23And Cora Coulthard, who had spent the entire race
01:19:25just locked on to the rear wing of his teammate,
01:19:30sits back there in 6th, just ahead of the two Williams.
01:19:34We hear, and quite naturally so,
01:19:36that David Coulthard is very, very upset,
01:19:38making a lot of hand gestures to his crew
01:19:40about why he was kept out.
01:19:41And I don't blame him. I'd be absolutely livid.
01:19:43After all, he is the one that's leading the World Championship right now,
01:19:46as the race goes.
01:19:49Well, not with Hakkinen leading,
01:19:51but he was ahead of Hakkinen coming into it, should I say.
01:19:53Good dust up here, Jacques Villeneuve and Zonta with Ralf Schumacher.
01:19:59Remember, they're basically all on fresh tyres.
01:20:01They have the same amount of fuel to go.
01:20:05As they say, we have a race,
01:20:07except for this guy in front who seems to be having his own.
01:20:14Poor Trulli can't keep pace with Hakkinen,
01:20:17and Barrichello perhaps could,
01:20:19but can't get past Trulli.
01:20:21No, he's having a very hard job to get by Trulli.
01:20:28You just cannot imagine the turbulence
01:20:30there must be from those cars
01:20:32as they're going through those woods.
01:20:34Hakkinen just majestically pulls away.
01:20:37Oh, he lost it.
01:20:39Oh, and another car goes.
01:20:41One of the arrows.
01:20:42That's Verstappen on the outside.
01:20:44Yeah, on one of the Williams.
01:20:45I think, oh, is that Ralf?
01:20:49Yeah, it's Ralf Schumacher.
01:20:52Poor Ralf.
01:20:53He was way back after his pit stop as well,
01:20:55working his way through.
01:20:57They are so close.
01:20:58He had climbed up to eighth.
01:21:00Oh, chaos coming in there.
01:21:02Yeah, that was her button.
01:21:04Trying to gain on the Sauber.
01:21:10And Williams activity in their pit
01:21:12in case Ralf needs to come in.
01:21:16Ralf won't want to come in.
01:21:18No.
01:21:19He'll want to stay out.
01:21:21Oh, in the bank this time.
01:21:23That is quite not a good one.
01:21:25The blue car.
01:21:26Another car overshoots the chicane.
01:21:28Wheels bouncing down the road.
01:21:30Oh, nasty.
01:21:31Wheels bouncing down the road.
01:21:33Oh, nasty.
01:21:34This is what you don't want to hit.
01:21:35One of those wheels.
01:21:36As you can see,
01:21:37the car takes very, very severe action to move.
01:21:41Denis gets involved with somebody
01:21:43who's very hard in the bank
01:21:45on the left side of your picture.
01:21:49That's Denis throwing his arms up
01:21:51and about to climb out.
01:21:53There were three cars trying to fit into a hole,
01:21:55only big enough for one,
01:21:56and we'll see the safety car once again.
01:21:59Yeah, there was a car
01:22:00that went heavily into the right-hand side
01:22:02as it came to the air at the center of the chicane.
01:22:04Now, Denis was battling a Lacey, Irvine,
01:22:08in that pack,
01:22:09and I think also Heitkopf.
01:22:17It seems like it might be Denis and a Lacey.
01:22:20We'll have another look here.
01:22:22But it's right at the back of this group, remember?
01:22:24Here we go.
01:22:25There's one on the left.
01:22:26Yes, it was a Lacey and Denis.
01:22:31No, no, Prost.
01:22:32Yeah, the Lacey.
01:22:33Yeah.
01:22:34Exactly.
01:22:35He has the left rear of a Lacey
01:22:37that gets hit and knocked away right away,
01:22:39and he takes a hard trip into the wall
01:22:42while Denis goes spinning.
01:22:51And there goes the errant wheel.
01:22:53That's the left rear of a Lacey,
01:22:57and it comes in almost into the cameraman
01:23:00a little further down along the outside of that barrier.
01:23:03Look at that wheel bounce across the front of the car.
01:23:05Goodness.
01:23:06Well, a Lacey said yesterday was the worst qualifying day
01:23:09of his Formula One career,
01:23:10and today may eclipse that.
01:23:13Well, those wheel tethers really work well, don't they?
01:23:18That new technological advancement that we have.
01:23:24So a full course caution is out for the second time today.
01:23:29Mika Hakkinen leads from Jarno Trulli,
01:23:32Barrichello, De La Rosa, Frentzen, and David Coulthard.
01:23:36Full course caution.
01:23:37We'll be right back.
01:23:38You're watching the German Grand Prix on Fox Sports Network.
01:23:42German Grand Prix.
01:23:43The Mercedes CL500 safety car has just pulled off,
01:23:47and again we have a race.
01:23:49Mika Hakkinen out front and off in the grass.
01:23:51Oh, is he going to get it back?
01:23:52No, he's going around.
01:23:53He's out at first.
01:23:55Keep it going, Alexander.
01:23:56Keep it going.
01:23:57Yes, he has.
01:23:58No, he hasn't.
01:23:59Yes, he's trying to get it again.
01:24:00Now he's stalled it.
01:24:01Oh, dear, oh, dear.
01:24:03Trying to get down into that gear is so difficult.
01:24:05Has to go across and get first.
01:24:08Coulthard.
01:24:09He lost it.
01:24:10Looked inside.
01:24:11I had a look there at Frentzen.
01:24:13Coulthard needs to look inside.
01:24:14He's going to keep his championship hopes going.
01:24:17Couldn't complete the pass.
01:24:20I have to say,
01:24:21I don't fancy his chance if Mika gets maximum points today
01:24:23and he doesn't get some good points.
01:24:25Right.
01:24:26The whole swing is going to go back towards Hakkinen
01:24:28within the team.
01:24:29He must be livid.
01:24:31There he is in sixth.
01:24:33Behind that second yellow, Jordan.
01:24:36Out of Frentzen.
01:24:38Oh, another bit of overlocking going on there
01:24:41as Wurz runs across the road.
01:24:43Here we go again.
01:24:44Right way back.
01:24:45It looks like Wurz contacted another car.
01:24:48Another car way, way back.
01:24:52And, of course, he's got his brakes on quite naturally.
01:24:55Doesn't want to go any too hard.
01:24:57And, of course, there he is.
01:24:58Try and keep that engine running.
01:25:00But not possible.
01:25:02Might have been Mika Salo that he made contact with, Derek.
01:25:04I'm not positive.
01:25:05Yeah, it was difficult to see.
01:25:08Why are we seeing so much carnage today?
01:25:10Well, I mean, the field was spread out.
01:25:13But, of course, as soon as they got together,
01:25:15it all brought on by that moron walking around the track
01:25:17taking a look on his own.
01:25:19And, of course, they're all nose to tail.
01:25:21They're braking from 215 miles an hour.
01:25:23Hit the brakes at 100 yards from the corner.
01:25:25And, of course, some guys don't have quite the same idea
01:25:28of what 100 yards in and how much braking effect to put on.
01:25:31And with different downforce packages,
01:25:33you're getting an inequality of the car
01:25:36as it comes into a corner and they touch one another.
01:25:39And, of course, they get out of shape as well
01:25:40before they touch, which often is the case.
01:25:48I still can't get over how livid David Coulthard must be.
01:25:51I would be steaming.
01:25:54Well, and that may become easier to do
01:25:57as the rain is out in the stadium complex.
01:26:01All we haven't seen so far, really, is a lot of rain.
01:26:04It looks like it's about to happen,
01:26:05certainly down in the stadium.
01:26:06But we saw it sweeping over part of the city just now.
01:26:10Yeah, and it's coming in hard and fast.
01:26:18Well, still 13 laps to go.
01:26:21Well, it was Mika Sala that touched Denis
01:26:23coming down the pit straight there at the restart
01:26:26and put Berts out of it.
01:26:27Ferrari setting up.
01:26:28Looks like they're getting ready for something.
01:26:30And they're ready in case it does really team with rain.
01:26:34Berts had the gearbox trouble, we're told.
01:26:36Well, I'm sure he did.
01:26:37When he tried to get restarted.
01:26:38Couldn't get any.
01:26:39But as Michael Schumacher said before the race,
01:26:41being the president of the Grand Prix Drivers Association,
01:26:44which we've all been members of from one time or another,
01:26:46please bring out the pace car if there's any rain coming
01:26:50because this track is super dangerous.
01:26:52So we'll see what happens if it does indeed come in heavy.
01:27:03Look at the rain coming down.
01:27:04It is raining quite hard now.
01:27:08It won't come in this lap, I don't think.
01:27:10I think they'll stay out for a moment
01:27:11because the backside of the circuit is still dry.
01:27:15And we're not going to see much until Mika Häkkinen really comes in.
01:27:21And I think when he comes in, they'll all come in.
01:27:23They'll wait for the guy in front because they're so close now.
01:27:26They'll wait.
01:27:27And David Coulthard all over the back of Heinz-Harald Fremsen.
01:27:30Come on, David, do something about it.
01:27:33We're told that this pretty severe little storm
01:27:36is affecting our satellite transmission to you folks,
01:27:40so apologize for that.
01:27:43Certainly beyond our control.
01:27:44A lot of activity in the pits.
01:27:46Oil flag out indicating there is water about.
01:27:49He looks pretty enthused about waving that one, doesn't he?
01:27:53And a lot of activity in the pits.
01:27:56Virtually everybody coming out with rain tires at the ready.
01:28:02Oh, is he going to do a bit more than that?
01:28:03Wave it a bit more than that, my dear chap.
01:28:08And we'll be back with continuing coverage
01:28:10of the German Grand Prix from Hockenheim after this.
01:28:12Countryside portion of the circuit out in the forest.
01:28:14It's relatively dry, but look at the stadium and the pits.
01:28:19Just like it's been every day, Ferrari setting up.
01:28:21They're all going to be pouring in.
01:28:23This time, ready for it.
01:28:26You won't see Zonta and Villeneuve.
01:28:27Zonta got into the back of Villeneuve.
01:28:29Jacques and Eddie Irvine have spun.
01:28:34Here we go.
01:28:35Oh, it looks like one of the Minardi's engines letting loose.
01:28:38What else can happen to make the track like an ice rink?
01:28:41That's Matsukane.
01:28:43Oh, and it blew up well there.
01:28:47And there's Irvine spinning, doing his 180.
01:28:50Need a 360, Eddie.
01:28:52Here we go, this is Villeneuve and Zonta.
01:28:56Oh, once you get those rear wheels on that curve in the dam,
01:28:59it is like an ice rink.
01:29:01Keep going, well done.
01:29:02Oh, he's still going round.
01:29:05But he kept it running, and that's the important thing.
01:29:07Oh, yeah.
01:29:09Look at it, once you get on that paintwork,
01:29:11anybody that goes racing, you've got to keep off those curves when it's wet.
01:29:14Here we go, McLaren's in.
01:29:22Ferrari kept going.
01:29:24Ferrari, Barrichello kept going for another lap.
01:29:28That's interesting, when you have to tiptoe through the stadium in the wet,
01:29:31and then can go stream around in the dry.
01:29:33He's going to drive offline.
01:29:34If you drive offline, you keep out where the dirt is,
01:29:37where the gravel is, where the rough stuff is,
01:29:39and you actually have a more abrasive surface.
01:29:45Hakkinen, I have to say,
01:29:46although he had a magnificent drive in the wet earlier this year,
01:29:49he wasn't terribly good yesterday in qualifying.
01:29:51Isn't happy in the damp conditions.
01:29:53David Coulthard is out, Barrichello is still out there.
01:29:55You see, it's dry out there.
01:29:56There's David Coulthard.
01:29:58Yeah, evidently Ferrari.
01:29:59David's now second, you see.
01:30:00Yeah, Ferrari must have reasoned
01:30:02that they can make better time in the dry part of the circuit
01:30:05than they would give up in the stadium in the rain.
01:30:07Well, they can see the segment times are still looking good.
01:30:10Ferrari's still ready in the stadium,
01:30:12but you remember, you come in, your tyres are very hot.
01:30:14So, in fact, they do work a little bit more efficiently.
01:30:17Here's Barrichello.
01:30:18Ferrari leading the race now.
01:30:20David Coulthard's behind with a Jordan Wright close in attendance.
01:30:24Presumably, it's Jarno Trulli.
01:30:26No, he's Frenzel, I apologize.
01:30:28And it may be elementary to point out,
01:30:30but these tyres do have some tread.
01:30:32They are not completely slick,
01:30:33so they do have some limited ability to wick off the water.
01:30:37This is where David Coulthard can really show
01:30:40whether he's worth being world champion or not,
01:30:43just to see how he drives in these conditions.
01:30:46That's the one chance he's got.
01:30:47He's got to take this chance.
01:30:49Probably being called in by the team,
01:30:50but he's not going to take the chance of going in
01:30:52until he's right up there.
01:30:54And he'll want his team telling him
01:30:55exactly where Mika Hakkinen is on the track.
01:30:59So then he allows for the fact that he can come in,
01:31:01change his tyres and still go out ahead of him.
01:31:05Because those wet tyres do not work in dry conditions.
01:31:10No, and that's the point I was trying to make, Derek,
01:31:13is the wets won't work on the dry part of the track.
01:31:15The dry compound will work better on the wet part
01:31:18than the wet tyres will work on the dry part.
01:31:20It's a gamble either way.
01:31:22Yeah, these three will stay out as long as they possibly can.
01:31:24Until one or other goes in.
01:31:26Nine laps to go.
01:31:27All three of the leaders stayed out.
01:31:29Ferrari mechanics ready there with the wet tyres.
01:31:34Here we go, out of the stadium.
01:31:35No, he wasn't using all the track there.
01:31:37David isn't either.
01:31:42The Williams going in.
01:31:44Ralf going in for some tyres.
01:31:48He's had a pretty miserable race.
01:31:55Well, Schumacher out of the race.
01:31:57Michael, that is.
01:31:59Who's best in the wet?
01:32:00Well, Rubens is outstanding in the wet one.
01:32:02I have to say, you've seen him drive brilliantly
01:32:05at Monaco a couple of times.
01:32:06Look at him now.
01:32:07He's actually pulling away from David Couldard.
01:32:09But it's dry out there.
01:32:10And I tell you what, I'd rather have dry tyres
01:32:12out on those 200-mile-an-hour sections
01:32:14than I would be, than have wet tyres out there.
01:32:17Because you cannot believe the instability of the cars.
01:32:20It's like being on rubber, like being on jelly.
01:32:22As the cars just work their way around.
01:32:26Derek, we're told, Jarno Trulli is going to be called in
01:32:28for a 10-second stop-and-go penalty.
01:32:32And he was well down in 7th place, wasn't he?
01:32:37Not clear on the reason.
01:32:38See, Rubens is driving exceptionally well
01:32:40because David isn't really making big inroads.
01:32:42And Frenton nearly loses it as they go through there.
01:32:46Zonta doing a magnificent job in 4th place.
01:32:52Look at the big rooster tails being kicked up there.
01:32:55That's alright.
01:32:56You don't mind the rooster tails
01:32:57as long as you're in a straight line.
01:33:00The chicane isn't too bad at the moment.
01:33:03Well, Mika Hakkinen right now is 14 seconds off the lead
01:33:07as a result of that pit stop.
01:33:09There's the indication of the penalty for Trulli.
01:33:18Look, look, look.
01:33:19David Coulthard was out pretty wide there.
01:33:21Frenton was coming right through on the inside.
01:33:23Is Coulthard going in for his tyres?
01:33:25No, he didn't go in.
01:33:30Frenton having a look down the inside of David.
01:33:32The Germans freaking out here.
01:33:35They might have a German win this race yet.
01:33:39Trying to get it all on as he comes up.
01:33:41780 horsepower.
01:33:42You can't turn it down on these engines.
01:33:45It goes all the way.
01:33:46There's Hakkinen behind.
01:33:47So he is catching them up.
01:33:49Trulli coming in for his penalty.
01:33:58Yeah, you wouldn't be surprised...
01:33:59Oh, it went straight across, did David.
01:34:01Straight across the chicane.
01:34:02Now, will they penalise him for that?
01:34:04He didn't take...
01:34:05He didn't gain any position, but he certainly kept him ahead.
01:34:08Yeah, didn't gain much advantage.
01:34:10The gap is still pretty constant.
01:34:13You would not be surprised to find a Ferrari leading here
01:34:16in the rain.
01:34:18At Hockenheim, but you would be surprised
01:34:20with Barrichello starting 18th on the grid
01:34:22to see him now as the leader of this race.
01:34:26Well, it's very interesting.
01:34:27You've got Mika Hakkinen not far behind.
01:34:32Barrichello holding up there strong.
01:34:34The wet has not progressed over the whole circuit.
01:34:38Heinz Frenton is going to take a long look
01:34:40down the inside of Coulthard as they come to the stadium.
01:34:43The problem is, when you take Koto out,
01:34:45break somebody, you have to consider
01:34:47you've got to outbrake them on a wetter line
01:34:49than you're on yourself to start with.
01:34:51Here he is having a look in the spray,
01:34:52but it's wetter down the inside.
01:34:54Can he have a go?
01:34:55He's having a look.
01:34:56David's making sure he doesn't have too good a look,
01:34:58but there's a lot of water out there.
01:34:59Look at it trailing.
01:35:00Now down the inside as they come down to the Sachs curve.
01:35:03Can you get down on the inside there, Heinz?
01:35:07Oh, David's wide, and he's almost off.
01:35:09Oh, look at the crowd go.
01:35:11And Zonta goes off.
01:35:13Zonta does go off.
01:35:15And Frenton got into Coulthard.
01:35:17They touched.
01:35:19Oh, Zonta, what a pity.
01:35:20He was doing so well.
01:35:23They're coming in. David's coming in.
01:35:24He said, to heck with this.
01:35:25I'm going in for wet tires.
01:35:27I just want some points.
01:35:28And that's what he's done.
01:35:29And there's Hakkinen goes by to take the lead
01:35:31from him as far as being ahead of him.
01:35:33And they weren't ready.
01:35:34I mean, you had to think that at some point
01:35:36Coulthard would have to come in,
01:35:38but McLaren quickly jumps to the task.
01:35:42And will put the fully treaded rain tires on.
01:35:44Oh, look at this.
01:35:45Hakkinen going by.
01:35:48Hakkinen going by Heinz and Frenton.
01:35:50Of course, Heinz and Frenton had that coming together
01:35:53with David, which slowed them all down.
01:35:55Here we go.
01:35:56David's going out well down the field now, I'm afraid.
01:35:58Yep.
01:36:00Sauber goes past.
01:36:02That's probably Salo.
01:36:03He probably goes in between Salo and Ralf Schumacher.
01:36:08Wow. Seven laps to go,
01:36:09and we've seen a little bit of everything today.
01:36:11Seven long laps for Rubens Barrichello.
01:36:14Because it's really, really wet in that stadium.
01:36:16And those McLarens, they sort of really fast on those wet tires.
01:36:20So the stadium does make up such a major part of the whole lap.
01:36:35Look at him getting it out of shape there.
01:36:45Frenton having a wild old time coming into the Jim Clark chicane.
01:36:52Oh, my goodness me.
01:36:54That's exactly what he did yesterday, actually, in qualifying.
01:36:57And that penalised him.
01:36:58He lost his best time, but that was different,
01:37:00because he actually benefited from it.
01:37:02Wonderful bit of driving here so far by Barrichello,
01:37:05keeping that car out in front.
01:37:07Because those conditioned areas, you can see the gap there.
01:37:09There's the McFerrari went out of your picture on the left.
01:37:12The McFerrari went out of your picture on the left,
01:37:14as you see the McLaren coming in on your right.
01:37:16The difference was 10.8 seconds the last time by.
01:37:20And now with Hakanen on full wets and rain continuing to fall,
01:37:23the circuit are getting more damp.
01:37:26I mean, this is standing water here.
01:37:28Well, Rubens is doing a wonderful team effort,
01:37:31whether he knows it or not,
01:37:33because he's not going to benefit in that much points-wise.
01:37:36But, my goodness me, if he can get out there
01:37:38and take those maximum points away from Hakanen,
01:37:40it helps Michael's quest.
01:37:42The Jordan going very slowly.
01:37:44He must have a problem.
01:37:46Very, very slowly indeed.
01:37:52And yet here, back in the forest,
01:37:54parts of the track virtually dry.
01:37:56Well, the point is, there's no fast corners out there.
01:37:58That's the only problem.
01:38:00Frentzen is off.
01:38:02Now, that was Frentzen slowing,
01:38:04and we'll find out why when we come back.
01:38:08So, Heinz-Harald Frentzen is out of his home Grand Prix.
01:38:11You're watching Formula One on Fox Sportsnet.
01:38:15Rubens Barrichello for Ferrari.
01:38:17There are three laps to go,
01:38:19and on each lap,
01:38:21Mika Hakanen is making up about eight-tenths of a second.
01:38:24There's Hakanen.
01:38:26It is raining in the stadium.
01:38:27It is dry out in the countryside.
01:38:29Hakanen stopped for tires.
01:38:31Barrichello did not stop for rain tires there.
01:38:34Yeah, Barrichello's still on dries.
01:38:37He's actually, he's quite a bit of status quo here,
01:38:39because Barrichello is pulling away
01:38:41three seconds on the outfield,
01:38:43on the fast bits of the circuit, which are dry,
01:38:45and he's losing three seconds to Hakanen on the infield,
01:38:48where he's very wet, and Hakanen's on the wet.
01:38:50So, it's a status quo,
01:38:52although it's about half a second a lap.
01:38:53Hakanen is encroaching on it,
01:38:55but there is only three laps to go.
01:38:57So, let's see how we get on.
01:38:58Very exciting, dramatic stuff.
01:39:00Brilliant drive for Barrichello,
01:39:02going for his first GP win.
01:39:04Two very different races going on here
01:39:06in the countryside and in the stadium,
01:39:08where it is quite wet.
01:39:10So, here's Barrichello.
01:39:12In the dry at this point, as you can see.
01:39:14The problem he has is that, of course,
01:39:16there are no really fast corners on the circuit.
01:39:18There's Hakanen behind him.
01:39:20There's no fast corners for the dry tires
01:39:22to really show how good they are,
01:39:24because the wet tire will still work quite well
01:39:26around a slowish corner.
01:39:28So, as the rest of the course dampens,
01:39:30the race comes to Mika Hakanen.
01:39:32Last time by, he's 9.6 seconds off the lead,
01:39:35so he gave up about half a second last time by.
01:39:38And David Coulthard,
01:39:40not that far behind Mika Hakanen.
01:39:42Poor David has had a traumatic bad day,
01:39:44as far as bad pit stop work.
01:39:46Not really by his crew, but just unlucky stuff.
01:39:49Jenson Button holding off fifth place.
01:39:52Mika Salo there.
01:39:53The two of them have traded spots.
01:39:55De la Rosa.
01:39:57Jenson Button's got fourth.
01:39:58I have to interrupt you.
01:39:59Jenson Button up to fourth place.
01:40:01What a brilliant finish for this young man,
01:40:03who we hear signed for Benetton.
01:40:07On the first lap,
01:40:08Fisichella and Michael Schumacher
01:40:09collided both out of the race.
01:40:12The race going under full course caution
01:40:14when a spectator wandered onto the course.
01:40:17Mika Hakanen made a pit stop immediately.
01:40:20His teammate was kept out,
01:40:21and that put Coulthard back into sixth on the restart.
01:40:25He has since climbed up to third,
01:40:27but it's been Barrichello's and Ferrari's decision
01:40:30not to pit for rain tires
01:40:32that have put Barrichello,
01:40:33who started this race in 18th position
01:40:36after qualifying problems,
01:40:37into the lead.
01:40:39Remember, Jenson Button started last,
01:40:41because his car wouldn't start on the grid
01:40:43at the very beginning of the race.
01:40:45Here we ride with Barrichello.
01:40:46See what he looks at.
01:40:49But Jenson Button come up from last place to fourth.
01:40:52Amazing.
01:40:53And Barrichello's coming from 18th to first.
01:40:57What a tremendous turnaround in this race,
01:41:00right to the East Coast.
01:41:02The last time anyone came
01:41:03from as far back as Barrichello to win a Grand Prix
01:41:06was John Watson.
01:41:07Not the John Watson.
01:41:08John Watson that thank you, John,
01:41:10for filling in these last couple of races.
01:41:12But in 1983 at Long Beach, Derek,
01:41:14John started 22nd and won.
01:41:17Well, he kept telling me he was really good, you know.
01:41:19I guess he was.
01:41:25So let's see.
01:41:26The gap has increased.
01:41:27Håkonen is now 12 seconds back of Barrichello.
01:41:30So, Derek, he gave up almost three full seconds
01:41:32that last lap.
01:41:33Yeah, well, his tires will be degrading
01:41:35in these conditions, you have to say.
01:41:37Look at Button catching up David Coulthard.
01:41:39Absolutely outstanding stuff.
01:41:40But these tires do not,
01:41:42these wet tires do not like being used in the wet,
01:41:44and it's like running on a sort of a jelly,
01:41:46and the car just moves around over the bumps.
01:41:49As you turn in the corner, it's just like slides.
01:41:51It's really a horrible sensation for a driver.
01:41:54The compound used, the rubber compound, is different,
01:41:57and the tread blocks on the rain tires,
01:42:00they squirm about,
01:42:01and it's got to be a very unnerving feeling
01:42:03to run those on the dry part of the course.
01:42:05The only time it's nice
01:42:06is when you get in the stadium on the wet.
01:42:07Right.
01:42:08Then you think, wow, that was worth it.
01:42:09This is the final lap for Barrichello.
01:42:11What a historic moment for him,
01:42:13and of course for Ferrari,
01:42:14but wonderful, absolutely wonderful
01:42:16for Rubens Barrichello to keep that car out there.
01:42:19He's proving to everybody
01:42:20what a great driver he is in the rain.
01:42:22What an incredible drive for Rubens,
01:42:24who, after qualifying,
01:42:26and remember, his car was broken.
01:42:28He had to wait for Michael Schumacher's car.
01:42:31He tried Schumacher's car
01:42:32with the pedals set up for left foot braking in qualifying.
01:42:35It did not work for him.
01:42:36He couldn't get in the field.
01:42:37They made some adjustments, worked on the car.
01:42:39Finally, he got a time that would get him
01:42:41into the show in 18th place,
01:42:44and has come all the way to lead this on its final lap.
01:42:49Hakkinen knocked it down a bit that lap.
01:42:51He's now 11 1⁄2 seconds back of Rubens.
01:42:54David Coulthard, his third,
01:42:56might have been second,
01:42:58but for the pit strategy
01:42:59that brought only Hakkinen in
01:43:01on the first lap of the full course caution.
01:43:03A great run for Jensen Button in fourth.
01:43:05A great run for Mika Salo, presently fifth,
01:43:08and Pedro de la Rosa continues his impressive season
01:43:11for Arrows in sixth place.
01:43:13Ralph Schumacher, seventh.
01:43:14Jack Villeneuve, eighth.
01:43:16Michael Schumacher looks on
01:43:19with Ross Braun there in the Ferrari pit stand.
01:43:22I was just wondering that Mike would be there.
01:43:24I thought, I hope he's there watching this,
01:43:25because it is an historic moment,
01:43:27and I'm sure he'll be over the moon
01:43:29that Hakkinen hasn't got maximum points,
01:43:31or David, for that matter.
01:43:32Look at Button, too, close behind David Coulthard.
01:43:35And Ferrari would score equal
01:43:37manufacturer's points today to McLaren.
01:43:39Here he comes.
01:43:40Hark of those horns as he comes in the stadium.
01:43:44What a drive for Rubens Barrichello.
01:43:48Outstanding.
01:43:49That really has made his mark
01:43:51in Grand Prix racing history.
01:43:53Outstanding drive.
01:43:55Absolutely brilliant.
01:43:57I can't get over it.
01:43:59Hakkinen some ten seconds back.
01:44:02Brilliant.
01:44:03Look at those Ferrari mechanics.
01:44:05Brilliant, brilliant drive.
01:44:07Checkered flag.
01:44:08Barrichello pulls over to salute his team.
01:44:11Michael Schumacher laughing and smiling with happiness.
01:44:18Hakkinen will finish second.
01:44:21David Coulthard will come around for third.
01:44:24Jensen Button closing in.
01:44:26Close, but not close enough for a podium finish,
01:44:30but yet a great run for Button and Mika Salo and De La Rosa.
01:44:34So, we'll be back to sort it all out.
01:44:36You're watching Grand Prix Racing.
01:44:38So, we'll be back to sort it all out.
01:44:40You're watching Formula One on Fox Sportsnet.
01:44:45Fox Sportsnet is brought to you by Toyota.
01:44:47Toyota, making it happen every day.
01:44:53While we were in break, I could hear the esteemed
01:44:55British broadcaster, Murray Walker,
01:44:57who's been covering F1 for 50 years, say,
01:44:59I thought I'd seen it all.
01:45:01Until today.
01:45:03What a wild event.
01:45:05Since Barrichello prevails, four Ferrari,
01:45:08the two McLarens, Jensen Button, a great drive,
01:45:11Mika Salo, Pedro De La Rosa.
01:45:13Those finish in the points.
01:45:15Ralph Schumacher, Jacques Villeneuve,
01:45:17Jarno Trulli, and Eddie Irvine, Mazzacconi, and Heitfeld.
01:45:21The top dozen.
01:45:23Well, it's a whole new season.
01:45:25Schumacher's lead, protected by Barrichello,
01:45:28and cut to just two points over the McLaren drivers.
01:45:30He has ten on his teammate,
01:45:32then Fisichella and Ralph Schumacher.
01:45:35Villeneuve, Button, Trulli, Salo, Frentzen, Irvine.
01:45:39In the points, Verstappen, De La Rosa, and Zonta.
01:45:43And in the constructors, well, it's still pretty close.
01:45:46Ferrari with 102, McLaren with 98,
01:45:48Williams, 21, Benetton, 18,
01:45:50B.A.R., 12, Jordan, 11.
01:45:54Salvo Patrona, six, Arrows, four,
01:45:56and Jaguar Cosworth, three.
01:45:57It's hotting up.
01:46:03In 1988,
01:46:05Barrichello's countryman, Ayrton Senna,
01:46:07won his first of three straight German Grands Prix,
01:46:10each one from the pole.
01:46:12But from 18th position,
01:46:14it is Barrichello who stands atop the podium today.
01:46:17Oh, what a day for Rubinho.
01:46:21Yeah, I think some of the Ayrton Senna memories
01:46:24linger in his mind at this moment.
01:48:33A damp crowd, Derek, but tears of joy.
01:48:36Absolutely, yeah.
01:48:37I mean, really, you don't have to say a word.
01:48:39The emotions just sort of oozes out of that picture, doesn't it?
01:48:43Well, it was really exciting
01:48:45when Barrichello pulled into Parc Fermé,
01:48:47and the two McLaren drivers were already there,
01:48:50and they waited for him to hug and congratulate him.
01:48:53Yeah.
01:48:54That's pretty special.
01:48:55And Michael Schumacher was there as well.
01:48:57He was over the fence to congratulate him first.
01:48:59As soon as he got out the car,
01:49:00and helped him get out.
01:49:01Very, very emotional for everybody.
01:49:09Mobil won the title sponsor of the German Grand Prix,
01:49:12so you see Pegasus atop those beautiful glass trophies.
01:49:31I'm glad I haven't got to pronounce that name,
01:49:33I have to admit.
01:49:34Or sign it on cheques every day.
01:49:35First, Duesenberg and Bündigen.
01:49:39I think.
01:49:48This is the moment Rubens has waited for for many years.
01:49:54One of the most humble, nicest men in Formula 1.
01:49:58123 career starts,
01:50:01and everybody loves a first-time winner.
01:50:21Now there's quite a show of sportsmanship.
01:50:23Absolutely.
01:50:24And here is the scene in Parc Bermé.
01:50:26Michael Schumacher is right there,
01:50:28even before Barrichello rolls to a halt
01:50:30to congratulate his teammate.
01:50:32We'll come back and hear from the podium finishers in Germany
01:50:35after this.
01:50:39...on that first lap of full course caution.
01:50:41Why did Rubens get rain-tired?
01:50:43Let's find out.
01:50:45The top three drivers of a fantastic German Grand Prix.
01:50:48It's Rubens Barrichello, Mika Häkkinen,
01:50:50and David Coulthard.
01:50:52Rubens, you said yesterday that it was the worst day of the year.
01:50:54I expect today must be the best day of your life.
01:50:56From 18th place to your first win, 123 starts.
01:50:59How do you feel?
01:51:01Well, I just feel great.
01:51:03I mean, it was...
01:51:05I mean, I hear the guys saying that the last lap
01:51:09when you're going to win, you know, is such a long lap.
01:51:12And, you know, I had lost the taste almost
01:51:15because it was such a long time ago.
01:51:17So it was really the longest one,
01:51:20and I promise you that today was getting a bit more tricky
01:51:24because the rain was coming in separate places.
01:51:27And I was just thinking to myself, you know,
01:51:31this is... it has to be mine.
01:51:33I mean, yesterday was such a bad day,
01:51:36and it can be good, so let's make it as simple as possible.
01:51:41And I couldn't believe, I couldn't believe.
01:51:43I'm just... I can't believe my eyes still.
01:51:46Now, obviously, the race is won
01:51:48by your decision to stay out on the slick tyres,
01:51:50grooved tyres at the end.
01:51:51Who made that decision?
01:51:52Hey, I mean, we are a team.
01:51:54We are a big family, and Ross said,
01:51:57Mika is coming, and I said,
01:51:59we keep an eye, and let's stay one lap more.
01:52:03And after that lap, he said,
01:52:05just keep on going, Rubens.
01:52:07You're going to win if you keep that pace.
01:52:10So, I mean, it was great
01:52:11because the slicks were doing really well
01:52:14on the straights and the three chicanes.
01:52:16But I think it was seven or six laps to go.
01:52:19I flat-spot the left front on the third chicane
01:52:22because it was spitting a little bit.
01:52:23So it was worrying
01:52:24because I couldn't see the track very well.
01:52:26But, you know, I paid the price, so it was great.
01:52:30Now, you made a lot of positions up
01:52:32with a blistering first run to your first pit stop,
01:52:35but that included, obviously, that first corner incident
01:52:37where your team-mate Mika was taken off.
01:52:39How did you see that first lap?
01:52:40Well, to be honest with you,
01:52:41I only saw that Michael was out of the race
01:52:46when I got close to Pedro de la Rosa, and truly,
01:52:50because then I started to count.
01:52:52I was too busy at that time.
01:52:55And then I just then realised that he wasn't on the track.
01:52:59Rubens Saxon, congratulations.
01:53:01Mika, you managed to vault yourself
01:53:03from fourth to first at the start there.
01:53:06How do you make such a good start?
01:53:08It was a fantastic start.
01:53:11I have to admit, something like that doesn't happen often.
01:53:15I mean, certainly me and David,
01:53:17we do practise that a lot in the test days,
01:53:20but this was one of the starts
01:53:23that definitely goes in the record books in my career.
01:53:27I think thanks for the team, you know.
01:53:30It was also part of the team
01:53:32who created the tactic for the start
01:53:36that way I'm able to make a good start,
01:53:38and I knew that, you know.
01:53:40If I don't get in a good position in the first corner,
01:53:42then life's going to be very difficult after that.
01:53:45But it worked. Thanks.
01:53:49You almost had the race won
01:53:50when at the beginning of the first safety car period,
01:53:53you came in the pits and David didn't.
01:53:54Now, whose call was that?
01:53:55Because in the past, we've heard the man on pole position
01:53:57gets first call of pit stops.
01:54:01Well, the team called me in,
01:54:03and I have to obviously follow the order,
01:54:06and the decision came to my favour.
01:54:09I'm still a little bit surprised, to be honest.
01:54:13I mean, it probably could have been done a little bit differently,
01:54:17but after all, you know, it was in my favour,
01:54:21and that's it, really.
01:54:24Looking back now, do you think it was the right decision
01:54:26to change to wet tyres at the end of the race?
01:54:29One sense, if you think about it, I could be on a barrier.
01:54:31If I would have kept the slicks, I would have gone off.
01:54:33I mean, our car was a quick car today, but not easy to drive.
01:54:38So, if we would have continued in slicks,
01:54:40our life would have been really, really difficult.
01:54:42So, on the other hand, you could say
01:54:44that we had to be extremely happy about this result.
01:54:48Thank you. Well done. Thanks.
01:54:49David, at the start, you made a very definite one move
01:54:52across Michael Schumacher. Was that revenge?
01:54:56No. I just had too much wheelspin,
01:54:59and I knew I was making a bad start from when I went off the line.
01:55:06So, I just wanted to try and make it, obviously,
01:55:09as difficult as we're allowed for someone to pass me.
01:55:12But in the end, I do actually know how close anyone else was behind me.
01:55:16Also, it was Mika passing me.
01:55:20How frustrated were you sitting behind the safety car,
01:55:22that first safety car?
01:55:23Knowing everybody else had changed their tyres, you hadn't.
01:55:26It looked at that point like you'd be lucky to score any points,
01:55:28and that the team had called Mika in rather than you.
01:55:31Well, that's maybe how it appears.
01:55:33In actual fact, it was just a little bit of confusion on my part.
01:55:36I was pitting that lap anyway,
01:55:39and I didn't hear the radio in the pit,
01:55:44in the, what do you call it, stadium.
01:55:48And then Mika pitted in front of me,
01:55:50and at that point, I didn't know the safety car was out,
01:55:52so I thought there must be some confusion as to who's actually pitting.
01:55:55So, that's why I continued on past,
01:55:58and then I realised the safety car was out.
01:56:00So, it's just unfortunate, one of those days,
01:56:02when it just didn't quite work out.
01:56:06But equally, that could have been a big help had I stopped in that lap.
01:56:11But there you go.
01:56:12I'm still happy to be sitting here with points
01:56:14and getting closer to the championship leader.
