00:00:00It's a big fight, we have been ahead since the beginning of the season, but we know we
00:00:08are facing a very strong competitor and we just have to concentrate race by race to try
00:00:13to improve the situation at every race and to score points and then we will see what
00:00:18happens at the end of the season.
00:00:19Difficult first start of the season, first two races, bit of a disaster, but balanced,
00:00:20very good.
00:00:21Of course it's when the going gets tough, the tough gets going and coming from behind
00:00:32is sometimes easier to get motivated for.
00:00:55Today is round 10 of the FIA Formula One World Championship, the Austrian Grand Prix
00:01:07at the A1 Ring, the 23rd Grand Prix this beautiful country has hosted since 1964.
00:01:14Welcome to the Mercedes-Benz pre-race show on Fox Sportsnet.
00:01:18Hello, I'm John Watson once again sitting in for Mike Joy and with me in the booth is
00:01:22two-time world sports car champion Derek Bell, while down in the pits is former Williams
00:01:27team manager Peter Windsor.
00:01:30Let's have a look at this weekend's pre-race menu, Eddie misses Austria, we're going to
00:01:37tell you about that in more detail a little further on, mid-season report card, that's
00:01:41our very personal view of what's taking place so far, anti-stall devices, what is it?
00:01:46We'll develop that a little bit later as well, and my old team mate Niki Lauda in a one-on-one
00:01:50with Peter Windsor.
00:01:51Well, the pit lane is open and cars already out on track, of course, it opens at 1.30
00:01:58local time, and there we see the man who must feel disappointed, Michael Schumacher, only
00:02:04fourth on the grid, that's his worst qualifying since his fifth place back at Silvers in the
00:02:09British Grand Prix, but he's still leading the championship by those 12 points, so let's
00:02:13look at the driver's championship, Michael Schumacher in 56, David Kuhlfeldt up to 44
00:02:18in second place, Hackett in third, Barrichello fourth, Fisichella, fine fifth, and Ralf Schumacher
00:02:24an equally fine sixth, and in the constructors, it's Ferrari with a slender lead of 88 over
00:02:2982 for McLaren, 18 for Benetton, 17 for Williams, 11 for Jordan, and 9 for BAR, well, we just
00:02:38look and see Michael Schumacher, or a Ferrari, we think it's Michael Schumacher, makes his
00:02:41way back in, and this is what is pretty normal these days, the 15 minutes in which the pit
00:02:45lane is open, drivers in and out of the pits, and there's been an awful lot of news over
00:02:51the last two weeks, as we watch Schumacher come back into the pits, so let's just catch
00:02:55up and see what that news has been.
00:03:01No Eddie Irvine in today's Austrian Grand Prix, severe abdominal pain struck him on
00:03:05Friday, he's back in England now, and we talk shortly to Neil Ressler, Jaguar's chief executive,
00:03:09about this, his place taken of course by Luciano Berti, the Brazilian Jaguar test driver, meanwhile
00:03:14for the Grand Prix, Glitterati, this was a great week, in Italy, Ferrari's chairman,
00:03:19Luca Modesemolo, finally got married to his long time sweetheart, Ludovica, 23 years,
00:03:23the age difference there, they say that is not an issue, indeed they say it's a bonus,
00:03:28guests included Gianni Agnelli, Michael Schumacher, and the great up and coming footballer, Eli
00:03:32Young, meanwhile down in Sardinia, Flavio Briatore opened his new nightclub, aptly named
00:03:36the Billionaire Club, guests there included Naomi Campbell, Fergie, and of course the
00:03:40inevitable Eddie Irvine, and not John Watson and Derek Bell, it should be noted, meanwhile
00:03:44Flavio Briatore has confirmed that yes, Benetton-Renault are talking to Jacques Villeneuve, Jacques
00:03:48wants 11 million dollars to drive for them next year, and Flavio says that is a little
00:03:52bit too much at the moment, so wait and see what happens there, finally, Dario Franchitti's
00:03:56name firmly in the ring at Jaguar, Jaguar scheduled to test him very shortly, and Franchitti
00:04:02looking good for a Jaguar drive next year.
00:04:04I think the most important part is that if I was Briatore, is I would try and raise that
00:04:0911 million, because if anybody like Benetton needs a man, it is Benetton-Renault for the
00:04:13next two years, they need Jacques Villeneuve, that leadership and that sort of storming
00:04:17ability that he has.
00:04:18Yeah, I think Villeneuve would really bring Benetton alive, in fact it's going to be Renault
00:04:21and they want somebody to lead a team, direct the team, but there's a team that's been in
00:04:25the news as well, Jaguar, and it's not with Luciano Berti, it's with Eddie Irvine, he
00:04:30had severe abdominal pain, so on Saturday morning, Peter Winter caught up with Neil
00:04:33Ressler to explain, had he any knowledge of it, he's begged your problem.
00:04:38No, none whatsoever.
00:04:40I spoke to him many times on Thursday and on Friday, Friday night, last night about
00:04:45seven o'clock I got a phone call, spoke to Eddie, he said that he had been having some
00:04:51pains in his abdomen since about mid-week, and that during the day Friday they got worse,
00:04:58he'd stopped by to see Professor Watkins, who as you know is the head physician for
00:05:02Formula One, and Professor Watkins recommended that he leave last night, Friday night, and
00:05:08go back to England for a proper diagnosis of whatever is causing this problem.
00:05:13So he went, and as of about ten this morning they were still doing tests and had not yet
00:05:19reached a conclusion.
00:05:21Last evening we decided that we would try to put our test driver Luciano Berti in the
00:05:26car, and we had to do a lot of scurrying to do that because he didn't even have his super
00:05:31license, nor did he have his driving uniform and his helmet here, but we got approval on
00:05:36the super license, we had his suit and helmet flown down overnight, and he was in the car
00:05:43this morning.
00:05:44Well if ever Jaguar needs some leadership, they need Eddie Irvine back as soon as possible
00:05:49because they are floundering dismally at the moment, I have to say, John.
00:05:52Yes they are, and for Luciano Berti it's a vertical learning curve, jumped in on Saturday
00:05:56morning, had gearbox problems, did a fine job qualifying in 21st, but it's going to
00:06:00be awfully, awfully tough for him this afternoon.
00:06:05Make a hack in, and David Coulthard, but this is David Coulthard a few days earlier, he's
00:06:10at St. Andrews in Scotland, and he's not preparing for the Open, he's just there doing a little
00:06:15bit of R&R, and let's see how David's putting skills, are they any good or not?
00:06:20Well he's close enough to the hole, did he miss?
00:06:22No he didn't, he got it in.
00:06:23Well done David.
00:06:24Might have been quite about it, but somebody ruefully said, I think it might have been
00:06:28David Coulthard, that don't worry Rubens, when the lights go out, Michael will cut
00:06:33across your front and you'll suddenly find yourself lifting off, and it'll be back to
00:06:37status quo, Michael Schumacher leading the charge for Ferrari.
00:06:41But let's have a look at this A1 ring, 2.6 miles around, Derek, give us a lap of the
00:06:46A1 ring.
00:06:47Yes, well it's a circuit that the drivers actually like, there's some pretty fast corners
00:06:50out there, and of course it's not quite as great as the original course, but you can
00:06:53see some of the braking overtaking areas.
00:06:56Let's go out and do a lap with Alexander Wurz.
00:06:58We're coming up past the pits up into turn one, he goes slightly uphill as he brakes
00:07:03into there from 185 miles an hour, 80 mile an hour as he gets to the apex of the corner,
00:07:08and then he's working his way up the hill on this sort of relatively smooth circuit,
00:07:13but it's actually abrasive to the tyres.
00:07:16Tire compound generally is a soft compound as he brakes very, very heavily, nose diving
00:07:20into that corner, trying to get the grip, not too much oversteer as he comes out, you
00:07:25don't want to get up on that kerb more than you have to, going along the top straight
00:07:28now towards the Gossa kerb, one of the sponsors kerb, 185 miles an hour in 6th gear, an opportunity
00:07:34to overtake there, I think possibly the best place on the circuit, a bit of understeer
00:07:36as he turns in, takes it out wide now, there is very little overtaking from here on, that
00:07:41is for sure, as he works his way down towards the Niki Lauda kerb, 100 miles an hour as
00:07:45he pops into that one, accelerates up to 150 in 4th gear for the next one, the Powerhorse
00:07:51kerb, you don't want to go too wide here because you get on that kerb, it deflects
00:07:55you from getting down this next trajectory, leading up to 180 miles an hour, down to the
00:07:59Jochen Rind kerb, a very famous Austrian driver, this is where Mika Häkkinen was absolutely
00:08:04outstanding in qualifying, penultimate corner, comes down 135 miles an hour, 110 through
00:08:09the last kerb, as he pours himself on the straight, that was a lap with Alexander Wirtz
00:08:13in the A1 ring.
00:08:15Well, there's the lovely Heidi, David Coulthard's girlfriend, in fact now it's Beyoncé, but
00:08:19just thinking about poor Alexander Wirtz, starting 14th in the grid, little realistic
00:08:23chance here this afternoon of him repeating the Grand Prix success that Niki Lauda had
00:08:27back in 1985, and so far I believe I'm correct in saying he's the only Austrian to have won
00:08:31his home Grand Prix.
00:08:33But as we mentioned earlier, Michael Schumacher still leading the championship, but as we
00:08:37mentioned a little bit earlier, Derek, Peter and myself, we have put together our mid-term
00:08:42report cards on drivers, teams, events, whatever, so Derek, let's start off with you, who are
00:08:48your top and best?
00:08:49Well, I have to say, the best car so far this year, in my opinion, is the Ferrari, without
00:08:54much of a doubt, obviously McLaren's close, best driver, well, it has to be Michael Schumacher,
00:08:59I still believe he's head and shoulders above the others, the worst car, and unfortunately
00:09:04it's not really the worst, it's just the most disappointing to me, the Jaguar has been the
00:09:07disappointment of the season as far as I'm concerned, the most disappointing driver to
00:09:11me is Alexander Wirtz, I really hoped he would have done a heck of a lot more with his life
00:09:15this last season, the best race was the French Grand Prix, overtaking and a lot of drama
00:09:20there with David Coulthard, of course, having that excellent win, probably the best he's
00:09:24had, and the most significant technical change to me has been the FAI's control of engine
00:09:28management, something I'm sure we'll see a lot more of in the future, so let's go down
00:09:32and see what Peter Windsor's views are on his mid-season report.
00:09:36Derek, I was hoping you weren't going to ask, best car, well, I have to go for the McLaren
00:09:41Ilmore Mercedes, very close between them and Ferrari, of course, but at the moment McLaren
00:09:45just getting the edge, best driver, Michael Schumacher, worst car, given their package,
00:09:51given their facilities, I have to say the Prost Peugeot, should be doing a better job
00:09:54there I think, worst driver, Eddie Irvine, I think the Jaguar package is a good one overall,
00:10:01big budget, and I think Eddie should be doing more with that at the moment, best race, British
00:10:05Grand Prix probably, lots of factors coming in there, nice to see Rubens leading for half
00:10:09distance, great qualifying session, lots of different factors, it was a good race all
00:10:13round I thought, and finally most significant technical breakthrough, what about that single
00:10:18exhaust in the McLaren diffuser, don't quite know what it does, but I'm sure you'll see
00:10:22several teams next year adopting that, John, I'm sure you'll disagree with me about Eddie
00:10:26Irvine, so go for it.
00:10:27Well, Peter, that's very kind of you, Eddie Irvine is an Ulsterman like I am, but currently
00:10:32the best car is certainly the Ferrari in my view, over the nine races we have seen, not
00:10:36just thinking about here in qualifying, best driver, I have to say once again, Michael
00:10:40Schumacher.
00:10:45The worst car, and a great disappointment, because Jaguar have brought an awful lot to
00:10:49Formula One in their very short time in it, but they've got an awful lot of work to do
00:10:52to be a competitive team, my worst driver, and this is controversial, Micka Hakkinen,
00:10:57it's not that he's a bad driver, it's just he seems to have lost his path or thread,
00:11:00I don't know why, but he's back on pole here this weekend.
00:11:04The best race for me was the European Grand Prix at the Nürburgring, Schumacher was just
00:11:08absolutely outstanding in appalling conditions, it understated why he is the best driver currently
00:11:13in Formula One.
00:11:14The most significant technical change has been the ongoing car safety crusade by the
00:11:18FIA.
00:11:19Well, there's the man I'm very keen on, Michael Schumacher, an awful lot of work to do this
00:11:25afternoon and after the French Grand Prix where they had a lot of problem with the rear
00:11:29tyres, Ferrari are working hard to get that car to be a lot more consistent, but remember
00:11:33that report card from Peter, Derek and myself is a purely subjective one, and we may not
00:11:38always be in agreement with you, the audience.
00:11:42We're going to go to break now, when we come back we'll have qualifying, and we'll look
00:11:46here at some of the faces of people, Gerhard Berger at BMW, John Todd at Ferrari, Eddie
00:11:51Jordan at Jordan, Norbert Hagen, a bit happier than the rest, Alain Crossface sums it up,
00:11:56join us in a minute.
00:11:59Welcome back to the Mercedes-Benz pre-race show on Fox Sportsnet, and in two weeks' time
00:12:06we're off to Germany to the Hockenheimring, Sunday July 30th, 10am local, one of the quickest
00:12:12Grands Prix in the calendar.
00:12:15So there's Flavio Briatore and Giancarlo Fisichella, they're the Benetton team and really Fisichella
00:12:21is the number one driver and Flavio Briatore, well am I going to keep Fisichella or not
00:12:26because if I'm going to take Villeneuve, the kind of deal that I had with Fisichella,
00:12:31it goes up by the year at compound, I can't afford both of them, so we might farm Fisichella
00:12:35out to somebody else to enable him to get Villeneuve.
00:12:38But let's get back into the qualifying, and Derek, take us through the qualifying.
00:12:43Well there was one man that had a really outstanding view of qualifying, and it was this man here,
00:12:48up there in his, we call him a winkle picker, right up there in the sky.
00:12:53Incredible view of the circuit, it was grizzling a little bit at the start as you can see by
00:12:56the haze, so a lot of the guys got in line to get out early, very rare these days, we
00:13:00see them sit there for ages waiting for them to come out.
00:13:03David Coulthard gets straight in the groove, he has a very fine second place, not really
00:13:08what he had hoped to get, but he was reasonably content with his second place.
00:13:11Then it was Riccardo Zonta, his best qualifying ever, remember he was world GT champion for
00:13:17Mercedes and he uses this circuit a lot, he was very happy with 6th place, Johnny Herbert
00:13:22meanwhile, running reasonably well, running as number one, but he had a broken suspension
00:13:26on the jag, that was him out of the way.
00:13:29And there's Luciano Berti, the replacement driver only came in that morning to stand
00:13:36in for Eddie Irvine, poor guy had to get out and learn the track remarkably quickly, Frenzen
00:13:41goes out, only qualifies 15th, but my goodness they had blurry time trying to keep that car
00:13:45under control, surely finishing in a very good 7th place despite all that oversteer.
00:13:50Michael Schumacher, well, he really got it all backwards and forwards, spinning all
00:13:55the wheels, ruined those tyres Michael, couldn't get it going at all this weekend, not happy
00:13:59with the low speed and the high speed combination, and he went out very wide on what he thought
00:14:03was going to be his quickest lap, he could only manage 4th.
00:14:06Mika Hakkinen had this amazing downhill section through the last two turns to set pole position,
00:14:11his 25th pole, absolutely wonderful for him.
00:14:15Let's go down to a very happy Mika Hakkinen at the press conference and hear what he has
00:14:19to say.
00:14:20Let's hope everything's going to go 100% and we're going to manage to go around the first
00:14:28two corners, not like last year, but a little bit differently, so I'm looking forward to
00:14:33tomorrow's race.
00:14:34Well, there's a lot of happy Finns there, let's go down to another very happy man, a
00:14:40Brazilian Zonta at 6th place, talking to Peter Winter.
00:14:43Yes, great qualifying performance from Ricardo Zonta, out-qualified Jacques Villeneuve for
00:14:46the second time this year, P6 on the grid.
00:14:48Ricardo, last year with the Supertech, this year with the Honda, tell us what it's like
00:14:52driving around Austria with that different power.
00:14:54Here you need a lot of power and the Honda is helping us a lot with the power, you know,
00:15:01here we improved the positions a lot from last year to this year.
00:15:04And you're not the only guy who did it, but you went off in a big way in that last corner,
00:15:08is this circuit particularly bad for just sudden breakaway like that?
00:15:11It's very slippery, this circuit, and when you try to push for one tenth or something
00:15:18like that, it's very hard.
00:15:19Well, it's very competitive and it's very close, but he did the best job out there,
00:15:23P6, great job.
00:15:24Yes, I'm very pleased about the job from the team, and also this result is very good for
00:15:29my career.
00:15:30Thank you very much.
00:15:31Well, here are the characteristics of the A1 ring, the track surface is abrasive and
00:15:36the grip level, surprisingly, is very low, Derek.
00:15:39Well, they use a soft compound generally, and the tyre wear is high, as you can see.
00:15:43Brake wear also is very high, and maximum throttle was 67% of the lap.
00:15:49And strange enough, fuel consumption is only medium, considering it's actually a very high
00:15:52speed circuit.
00:15:55We're having a look at the Jordan team, and great qualifying from the young Italian, Gniano
00:16:00Trulli.
00:16:01He qualified in fifth place, very disappointing for Heinz-Hauer-Fentzen, he qualified down
00:16:04to 15th.
00:16:06He is back, he blitzed qualifying, massive, massive, 0.385 quicker than his teammate,
00:16:13David Coulthard, in an identical car.
00:16:15So, there we are, looking down on the circuit.
00:16:21Peter Windsor, he's been doing a little bit more tech work for us in the pit lane, he's
00:16:25with the Minardi team once again, and he's going to explain to us anti-stall devices.
00:16:32Last week, with the help of our friends here at Minardi, Fondmetal, Ford, Cosworth, we showed
00:16:35you the systems it takes to start a Formula 1 engine.
00:16:38We've had a lot of response to that, specifically about what it takes to keep that engine running,
00:16:43what a Formula 1 anti-stall strategy is all about.
00:16:45Well, this effectively is a Formula 1 anti-stall strategy.
00:16:49It operates mainly on the chassis side, as distinct from the engine side, because what
00:16:52it's all about is pre-setting a rev limit, below which, obviously, the engine will stall,
00:16:57something like 2,100 revs, for example, and then the chassis engineers program the clutch
00:17:02to disengage the millisecond the revs drop below that.
00:17:06Simultaneously, of course, the engine revs have to be picked up.
00:17:08That all happens electronically, as a result of programming that goes on here.
00:17:12Now, it doesn't always work.
00:17:13If the race is 30 laps old, everything's very hot, the car's spinning backwards into the
00:17:17sand, the anti-stall device will probably not come on.
00:17:20It's actually designed mainly for start systems.
00:17:23Equally, if you're David Coulthard, and you do the procedure absolutely correctly, but
00:17:27there's a slight blockage in the fuel flow, or something like that, on the grid in Canada,
00:17:31it will also stall.
00:17:32Finally, it may come on inadvertently.
00:17:35You might make a good start, but then the engine might fall into a natural trough as
00:17:38it's going into second gear, and the anti-stall system might suddenly come in.
00:17:41All the driver can do at that point is wait, de-clutch, and then get the thing going again.
00:17:46Well done, Peter.
00:17:47Well, thank you, folks, for all your email addresses.
00:17:51Keep sending them in as we look at rooms Barrichello.
00:17:53Our email address is formula1 at foxsports.net.
00:17:57So, we're looking at Jaguar with a little bit of a problem.
00:18:02One of the cars being pushed away.
00:18:03But in the meantime, at Zeltberg, teams fly in.
00:18:07Here is the military airfield.
00:18:08It's one mile from the racetrack.
00:18:09And Flavio Briatore and the drivers.
00:18:10And that's Briatore's plane there we're looking at.
00:18:11Join us back here on Fox Sports Net in a moment.
00:18:19Is brought to you by Mercedes-Benz, located on the web at mbusa.com.
00:18:23Well, we heard some of our guys from Fox Sports Net made a visit to this.
00:18:28This is the local police station.
00:18:29We don't know whether it was voluntary or involuntary.
00:18:31But let's look at the remaining 2000 schedule.
00:18:34July 30th, it's Germany, the Hockenheim Ring, 10 a.m.
00:18:37August 13th, Hungaro Ring.
00:18:4027th, Belgium, to Spa-Francorchamps.
00:18:42Then September, it's Monza in Italy.
00:18:44Fantastic race.
00:18:45My favorite of the year.
00:18:46A new Grand Prix in the calendar, 23rd.
00:18:48That's qualifying.
00:18:50And 24th, a Grand Prix at 1 p.m. ET.
00:18:53First time since 91, a Grand Prix in the United States.
00:18:56Then into October, it's Japan on the 8th of October.
00:18:59And the final Grand Prix of the year, 21st of October, in Malaysia.
00:19:05David Coulthard and Bernie Eccleston and, of course, one of the three famous tenors
00:19:08and his name's Escaped Me.
00:19:09But he is a great Formula One fan and, well, the moment's ticking away here.
00:19:14Not very long to go just catch a glimpse of Micka Hakkinen as he gets his gloves and
00:19:19helmets on.
00:19:20But we have to talk about the Jaguar being pushed off the grid, John.
00:19:22You see him even being pushed down the pit lane, so I don't know what's going to happen
00:19:25there.
00:19:26Well, in the meantime, we have got a big race and there we're looking at the Jaguar team
00:19:31cars being shuffled backwards and forwards.
00:19:35So we're going to go and look at Indy.
00:19:36Derek Bell was there a month or so ago and he's going to look at what Indy has done for
00:19:40Formula One.
00:19:41I'm impressed.
00:19:43Before the Indianapolis Motor Speedway could actually host the United States Grand Prix,
00:19:53there were two specific things they had to build, which wouldn't be utilised either by
00:19:57NASCAR for the Brickyard 400 or by IRL for the Indy 500.
00:20:01And that was an infield motor circuit incorporating the oval and the other was these 36 magnificent
00:20:08garages that are built for the individual teams.
00:20:11They actually open out onto the pit lane for Formula One racing.
00:20:16This is a classic example of a triple garage which will be used by, let's say, Ferrari
00:20:20or McLaren or Jordan or whoever.
00:20:23And upstairs, they have a hospitality unit that's actually adjoining it for their use
00:20:27as well.
00:20:28Well, just one of the things that have been built by the incredible Indianapolis Motor
00:20:32Speedway in preparation for this year's United States Grand Prix, going to be state of the
00:20:36art, John.
00:20:37Well, I'm looking forward to it.
00:20:38I think it's going to lead Formula One circuits to another level.
00:20:41Indy's done a superb job and I think everybody cannot wait to get there and see how that
00:20:45race is going to be promoted and how the fans are going to listen to the Formula One cars
00:20:49for the first time.
00:20:50I mean, at Indy, that pit straight is going to be awesome.
00:20:55So we're looking down on the grid, but in the meantime, Peter Windsor caught up with
00:20:58one of my old teammates, Austria's three-time world champion, Niki Lauda, a man who's done
00:21:03everything in life and also he survives.
00:21:08It was right here at the Osterreichring that a young Niki Lauda began his motor racing
00:21:12career, first in little two-liter sports cars, subsequently in Formula One.
00:21:16He became a three-times world champion and he founded Lauda Air, a major international
00:21:21airline.
00:21:22We spoke to Niki and asked him what he was up to today.
00:21:25Basically, I'm running the airline, which I started in 79 and then again in 85.
00:21:32So my main job is to run 777s, 767s, 737s.
00:21:37Is it a fight or is it a pleasure?
00:21:39Depends.
00:21:40Sometimes it's a fight with the union, sometimes it's a pleasure.
00:21:43So it's a question like every other business.
00:21:45It's hard work.
00:21:47You can't compare it with racing because racing was really easy because I only had to worry
00:21:51about myself.
00:21:52Now I have to worry about 2,000 people and 26 airplanes, so it's a different ballgame.
00:21:57When you come to a Grand Prix and you see the way Formula One is now and the business
00:22:01that it is and you see Jackie Stewart selling his four-year-old team for $100 million,
00:22:06do you ever think, maybe I should have done a Formula One team or maybe I will do a Formula
00:22:10One team?
00:22:11I didn't want to do one because driving in a team was always the easiest way because
00:22:16if you've been successful, the other people had to do the work and you made the money.
00:22:20Then I decided for whatever reason to run an airline and start this in Austria.
00:22:25So this was a decision which I do not regret because I would have done the same thing.
00:22:30But as you said, it's much easier to make more money in Formula One and have a different
00:22:34life.
00:22:35So therefore I come back here and then watch my friends, what they're doing.
00:22:39But basically I'm happy with what I've done.
00:22:41I've never asked you this, I don't know why, but what actually happened in that accident
00:22:44at the Nürburgring?
00:22:45How did you go off the road?
00:22:46Was it a driver error?
00:22:47Can you remember the situation?
00:22:48No, the upper wishbone broke, there was a new magnesium part on the engine which supported
00:22:53the rear suspension and when I hit the curb, the car made this sort of move and broke the
00:22:58upper linkage to it.
00:23:00So the right rear wheel just started steering and therefore I wheeled off into the rockets
00:23:06there.
00:23:07Into the rocks there.
00:23:08And can you remember every detail to the point where you lost consciousness?
00:23:10No, no, I cannot.
00:23:12I lost memory three laps before the accident.
00:23:16I can't recall the last three laps driving and then the accident, which never came back.
00:23:20So if I wouldn't have seen this on television, I would have never known what happened.
00:23:25Do you have a very good memory of all your races and everything that happened throughout
00:23:28your career?
00:23:30Yes, basically yes.
00:23:31I mean, the important ones I can certainly tell you.
00:23:34When I finished 10th, I don't remember, but the important ones where championships were
00:23:39decided or winning races, yes.
00:23:41Last question, Niki.
00:23:43How is your future?
00:23:44Do you want to be more and more successful, achieve more things or do you see a retirement
00:23:48somewhere along the line?
00:23:49No, I don't see my retirement at all.
00:23:50I mean, I'm happy what I'm doing now.
00:23:52I keep my eyes open and look in other different projects.
00:23:55So if something comes up which is interesting to me, I will certainly do it.
00:23:59Do you love flying?
00:24:00Flying?
00:24:01I mean, I flew 12,000 hours until now, so I do a lot of flying and I fly my airline
00:24:06about 700 hours a year from 777 all the way down to 737.
00:24:11So you get used to it.
00:24:12I mean, it's not the same sort of adventure like it was to me in the beginning, but it's
00:24:17certainly part of my job.
00:24:19I can run the company in a much better way if I fly the airplanes and then come back
00:24:25in the office and change things.
00:24:27Thank you very much.
00:24:29It's great to talk to Nicky about life, the universe, anything you want really.
00:24:34The guy is just brilliant.
00:24:35He's very, very sharp.
00:24:37And when you hear him enunciating his words, when you see the way he thinks, you can see
00:24:40why he won those three world championships.
00:24:42Thanks, Peter.
00:24:43Well, he was a great teammate as well.
00:24:45Tough at times, but that's the nature of the beast.
00:24:48But Nicky, of course, above all things, is a linear thinker.
00:24:51Now stay with us.
00:24:52We're going to be back in a moment for the Grand Prix of Austria.
00:24:54We've got the starting grid and race start.
00:24:56See you soon.
00:24:59Oh, shit!
00:25:04Welcome back to the Mercedes-Benz pre-race show on Fox Sportsnet.
00:25:08There's the weather chart.
00:25:09Temperature, chilly 60 degrees, track temperature 72, humidity 25 percent, and McLaren on the
00:25:17front row.
00:25:18They were on the front row last year, Derek, but we had a funny start.
00:25:21We most certainly did, as David Coulthard, in fact, sort of tried to come up the inside
00:25:25of Mika Häkkinen into Turn 2, this uphill right-hander.
00:25:29Thought Mika would let him through, but Mika thought otherwise.
00:25:31He said, I'm the team leader.
00:25:33Mika went round.
00:25:34Eddie Irvine, of course, had a great shot, a hell of a run from that position, and Mika
00:25:39Häkkinen came back incredibly strongly right through the field.
00:25:42Well, we're looking at the field.
00:25:44And it certainly did change this championship status.
00:25:47I mean, Mika Häkkinen must have been wondering, what am I going to do?
00:25:50I've got a teammate who takes me off.
00:25:52Even Ferrari haven't managed to achieve that so far.
00:25:55But Mika Häkkinen back on that pole position with a devastating qualifying run on Saturday
00:25:59afternoon as we wait for the cars to make this final parade lap for the 71 Lap Grand
00:26:05Prix.
00:26:06So let's have a look at our Mercedes-Benz starting grid as the cars leave on their formation
00:26:11lap.
00:26:12Mika Häkkinen, that wonderful pole position lap.
00:26:14And David Coulthard's only three tenths behind him.
00:26:16Can't be too happy with that.
00:26:18Rubens Barrichello, third quickest TI qualified teammate.
00:26:21Michael Schumacher.
00:26:22Well, Michael's had this trouble all weekend of getting the handling just right on the
00:26:25car.
00:26:26In fact, he's elected in the last moments to get in the spare.
00:26:27He finds he has a better balance.
00:26:28Best of the rest was Jarno Trulli in his Jordan.
00:26:32Riccardo Zonda having his career best, qualifying sixth place.
00:26:36Excellent.
00:26:37And Jacques Villeneuve, seventh place in the grid, behind his own teammate.
00:26:41And Giancarlo Fisichella still doing a very good midfield job there for Benetton.
00:26:45Sarabar and Mika Salo, good performance, ninth place in the grid.
00:26:50And Joseph Verstappen showing that the Arrows do have a little bit more performance in that
00:26:53Supertec engine.
00:26:54In 11th place, the Brazilian, Diniz in his Sarabar.
00:26:59And Pedro de la Rosa showing that there really is performance in that engine.
00:27:03Best qualifying for Nick Heidfeld in his short Formula One career, 13th in the grid.
00:27:07And Alexander Wurz, local boy, wishes only he could be further up the grid, but he isn't.
00:27:11And a very disappointed Frensen on the harder tyre in his Jordan, 15th place.
00:27:18Johnny Herbert, of course, in the first of the Jaguar, 16th.
00:27:22John Olese in the Prost, 17th, and Jenson Button in the first of the Williams, can't
00:27:26believe that, in 18th.
00:27:28Ralf Schumacher in 19th, and Marc Genet in 20th.
00:27:32Luciano Berti should be 21st, but he's in the pit lane in a water leak, the start from
00:27:37the pit lane.
00:27:38And last, Metsukani in the Minardi, in 22nd place.
00:27:42And the curve's making their way down to the Jochen Rindt curve.
00:27:46And these two corners, the Jochen Rindt curve and the A1 curve, the final two corners, Derek,
00:27:50that's where Mika Häkkinen really was stunning.
00:27:52Yes, he was absolutely outstanding today, yes, one has to say, he really made up time
00:27:56at that point.
00:27:57But Mika has been away on a few days' rest, as we look at his wife there, who seems to
00:28:01be heavy with child, I have to say, John, although Mika won't admit it yet.
00:28:04No one's admitting it, and there's the rather worried look on the face of Jean Todd.
00:28:08The Ferrari team are concerned about tyre wear, particularly rear tyre wear.
00:28:13As Mika Häkkinen comes up onto the grid.
00:28:18So let's look at the tracks out of Host and Grand Prix.
00:28:20They've all basically been in the Zeltfeg area, Zeltfeg itself was a military airfield
00:28:23in 1964, then the A1 ring was built in 1970, the A1 ring was built in 1996, 97, 8 and 9,
00:28:32and now 2000, and the Osterreich ring, 18 Grands Prix from 1970 through to 1987.
00:28:40So let's watch and see, the lights will come on and sequence the red lights, when they
00:28:44go out we'll have a start for the 23rd Austrian Grand Prix, and it's going to be exciting
00:28:48into the first corner.
00:28:49Well, the two McLarens into the first corner side by side, Coulthard backed off, Schumacher
00:29:06spun, chaos at turn one, Schumacher bound on the sand, it might well have been the Ferrari,
00:29:12oh my goodness, look at this.
00:29:14Well, I think we're going to see a restart, I think we'll see the red flag, because that
00:29:18is absolute chaos down in the Castro curve, and Ferrari, both of them, Schumacher out,
00:29:24Robins, Barrichello went very wide, but look, the two McLarens have got, well, almost half
00:29:28the length of the back straight.
00:29:32It would seem to be Michael Schumacher, Ralph Schumacher and Jarno Trulli.
00:29:36And that is real disaster for Ferrari, the safety car appears to be coming out, Michael
00:29:41Trulli.
00:29:42Suspension damage to the front of the car, we think suspension damage, and there we see
00:29:45the flag waving, that's a yellow flag not to indicate at that particular corner.
00:29:48And we're looking down, and congestion, as we see the Mercedes, the safety car out, Norbert
00:29:55Haag, Javier Hagen looking, and they will of course catch up.
00:30:00Well, the fact is, the field will catch up with the safety car as they come round the
00:30:04first lap, the wave flag indicating that we are under safety car rules.
00:30:09The cars and drivers must slow down.
00:30:11Micka Salo is in third place, Derek, and what a start.
00:30:14We thought we were going to see Axe Eichmann, but there Fisichella makes his way back to
00:30:18the pits.
00:30:19His car is craned away.
00:30:21Fisichella started this Grand Prix in eighth place in the grid, Michael Schumacher was
00:30:26fourth, so how did Fisichella and Schumacher get into contact?
00:30:29It seemed like Michael was just tapped in the rear, he looked quite under control turning
00:30:32into the corner, and suddenly he went round, he was well on the right-hand side of the
00:30:36track.
00:30:38Well, if anything is going to turn this championship on its head, it is what happened here within
00:30:42about ten seconds of the start.
00:30:44We saw Coulthard get the initial jump at Micka Hakkinen, but he in fact appeared to me to
00:30:48back off.
00:30:49Let's look at that start again, Derek.
00:30:51Well, he didn't show it very well that time, I didn't think, John.
00:30:53I thought David certainly did jump the start where they would get penalised.
00:30:57Now, let's just look at Schumacher on the inside, on the left side, he gets touched.
00:31:01Yeah, he gets touched from behind by Zonta.
00:31:04I think that might have been Ricardo Zonta.
00:31:06The first time he's at the sharp end of the grid, and there we see one of the sabres,
00:31:09I think that's Denise, and I think that was just simply inexperience on the part of Ricardo
00:31:14Zonta.
00:31:15When you're at the front of the grid, it's a different start altogether.
00:31:18Well, I remember sitting on the grid one day, and here we go, let's watch the start again.
00:31:24Well, David comes up the inside, he does seem to have a little bit more off the line than
00:31:27anybody else, but look at the two Ferraris.
00:31:29Barry Keller falls across from Michael, Schumacher, Schumacher down the inside of Barry Keller
00:31:34as they go into the first turn, and as he goes in, look at Zonta right there behind him.
00:31:38Michael goes round, then of course, mayhem behind him, as of course, nobody can see a
00:31:43darn thing in all the dust and the smoking rubber.
00:31:46But here we go again, another shot, Michael being turfed around by Zonta, and then really
00:31:50he wasn't damaged at all, I think, until Trulli hit him.
00:31:53Once Trulli hit him, that did derange his front suspension.
00:31:56Well, you had Zonta and Trulli were directly behind Michael Schumacher, and of course,
00:32:00the three of them came together, so there's another view.
00:32:02Look, you can see, just there, Zonta's car just overruns, tips the back of Schumacher's
00:32:07Ferrari, and Trulli just about tips the back of Barry Keller's Ferrari.
00:32:11And obviously, Barry Keller not wanting to get involved with Michael Schumacher, but
00:32:14Trulli quite happy to give Barry Keller one up the rear end as they turn in, saying,
00:32:18come on, let's get a move on here.
00:32:21Here we come again, but it happens far too far.
00:32:23If we look from Wurz's car, you can't see Schumacher walking back.
00:32:27That's his championship not looking good at all right now, but certainly livening it up
00:32:31for the latter part of the season.
00:32:33There's the green flag, the safety car is in, and racing is back underway.
00:32:37And there's Micah Hacken and David Coulthard.
00:32:38Micah Salo, that's the top three.
00:32:40And I'm surprised to hear myself saying Micah Salo in third place.
00:32:44And look at the arrows, right well up there as well.
00:32:48Well, I mean, what can you say?
00:32:49Schumacher out, first corner.
00:32:52Jarno Trulli out from fifth place in the grid.
00:32:54Giancarlo out from eighth place in the grid.
00:32:56There are the three out in that one first corner crash.
00:33:00And Michael Schumacher's face, I think, said everything.
00:33:03He is absolutely, completely destroyed and also a chance of retaining championship.
00:33:09I wonder if there's any damage to the back of Barrichello's car.
00:33:11He's got Jensen Button all over the back of him there.
00:33:13And he didn't look very happy going into that turn.
00:33:16He seemed to be moving around a lot on the rear end.
00:33:19Well, it did look like at the start that Jarno Trulli's Jordan just tipped the back of Barrichello.
00:33:25Certainly, Barrichello went very, very wide over the gravel on the exit of that Castro corner.
00:33:30Castro curve.
00:33:32As they filter their way down through the Ockenrind curve and into the A1 curve.
00:33:36And there's the gap, 1.175 seconds.
00:33:39And Salo, 3.1 seconds behind.
00:33:42De La Rosa, fine fourth.
00:33:43Johnny Herbert in the Jaguar up to fifth place.
00:33:46Remember, Herbert started 16th.
00:33:48Rubens Barrichello started third.
00:33:49He's in sixth place.
00:33:50Jensen Button doing a great job for Williams up to seventh.
00:33:54Ralf Schumacher all the way down in 70th.
00:33:56Of course, he got caught up, Derek, in that whole almost log jam in turn one.
00:34:03You may well be wondering, why didn't the red flag get restarted?
00:34:06Well, of course, they felt that they could quite happily clear the track up, get rid of the cars.
00:34:10There wasn't too much debris on the track without stopping the race and restarting.
00:34:14Without too much danger.
00:34:15So hence, we carry on.
00:34:16Pedro De La Rosa is doing a stunning job.
00:34:18He's gone from fourth to third.
00:34:20He's overtaken Mikasalo.
00:34:21And if ever somebody's face told a story, like of Schumacher's,
00:34:25I don't think there'll be too many people looking for an interview from Schumacher for the next three days.
00:34:30Look at De La Rosa.
00:34:31I mean, he's storming away from Mikasalo.
00:34:33Now in third place.
00:34:36This is where it's happening.
00:34:37It's absolutely nighty.
00:34:38It's downhill through here.
00:34:46Well, look.
00:34:47Pedro De La Rosa up to third place.
00:34:49He started from twelfth.
00:34:50Coulthard, obviously.
00:34:51Johnny Herbert, up from sixteenth.
00:34:54Rubens Barrichello, of course.
00:34:55He got involved in that first corner shunt.
00:34:57He started third.
00:34:58Swam across the front of Michael Schumacher.
00:35:00Down to sixth place.
00:35:01It seemed like anybody that got on the inside actually had quite a good run around on the inside to get away.
00:35:06But on the outside of the corner, of course, they were all nose to tail or nose to nose.
00:35:12Well, it was a very tight grid anyway.
00:35:14We saw the first three cars covered by four-tenths of a second.
00:35:17But then, from fourth down to twelfth place, it was less than a second.
00:35:20And it was very competitive, of course.
00:35:22People like Riccardo Zonta, so far up for the first time in his Grand Prix career.
00:35:27He's into unknown territory.
00:35:29And the consequence is he's taken out the championship leader.
00:35:32And then he's going to be driving a Ferrari in the near future.
00:35:39It's a puff of smoke.
00:35:41This will be cut back.
00:35:42This is Rubens Barrichello making his way past up into that fifth place.
00:35:47So, Barrichello recovering from the start.
00:35:50He went over the gravel in the Castro curve.
00:35:53But in the meantime, the two McLarens just running away from an Arrows.
00:35:57Pedro de la Rosa, Mickie Salo.
00:35:59Look at the smoke from the back of the Jordan.
00:36:02Oh!
00:36:03There he goes on his own oil.
00:36:04He really went off.
00:36:05And that is Mick...
00:36:06I'm sorry.
00:36:07That is Hans-Arnold Frentzen, yes.
00:36:08And he's gone off and he's not going to recover.
00:36:10He went off on the awkward wind curve.
00:36:11Suddenly, the back of the car snapped up.
00:36:13We've seen him do that, Derek.
00:36:14We've seen him do that, Derek, throughout qualifying.
00:36:16Remember, he was on the harder of the two tyre compounds.
00:36:18Yeah, but John, he had smoke pouring off the back of his car, in my opinion, as he came up to it.
00:36:21There's a lot of smoke from somebody's car and I reckon he lost it on his own oil, John.
00:36:24I think you're right.
00:36:25We did get a quick glimpse of Eddie Jordan.
00:36:27Look, two cars out.
00:36:28There we see the view again.
00:36:30There's the smoke.
00:36:31There's the smoke.
00:36:32There's the oil on the tyres.
00:36:33And round he goes.
00:36:35The final bit of smoke, of course, was the brakes.
00:36:37But there was certainly, I believe, smoke coming out of that.
00:36:39Yeah, I would say that's something totally mechanical, if not engine hydraulic.
00:36:42And you can see, Fenton, he's struggling.
00:36:44He's got the car in gear.
00:36:45He's booted it to try and keep the car contained on the track, but he's got too much momentum.
00:36:50Look at him, completely off the ground as he goes through to that.
00:36:53And that is another disastrous weekend for the Jordan team.
00:36:57They are confirming it's an engine fault, engine problem.
00:37:03Now we've got four retirements in the space of the six laps.
00:37:06Michael Schumacher, Jarno Trulli and Fisichella.
00:37:09Remember that first lap, first corner, Schumacher, they were right for a crash.
00:37:13Now Heinz-Harald Fenton's out of this corner here with an engine problem that took him out into the gravel.
00:37:20I can't believe how well de la Rosa's going.
00:37:22Mikasala, of course, in third place.
00:37:24But what a...
00:37:25Sorry, in fourth place.
00:37:26But what a great drive by de la Rosa in third.
00:37:28Absolutely superb to retain that.
00:37:31And here, of course, is Barry Keller working over the back of Mikasala.
00:37:34It's all down to Barry Keller to try and get some very valuable points for Ferrari and the constructors
00:37:38and, of course, for him in the Drivers' Championship.
00:37:40I think, Derek, you have to imagine that somebody at Ferrari might be making a trip down to the Saaber team.
00:37:44Remember, Saaber used the Ferrari-based Petronas engine.
00:37:47And to say, you know, guys, it would help us if we got Barrichello up into fourth as soon as possible
00:37:52and not let those two McLarens get away too far, too quickly.
00:37:56There is the top six, Hackett and Kulsa, de la Rosa, Sala, Barrichello and Herbert.
00:38:01Jenson Button in seventh.
00:38:02Marc Genet in the Minardi, eighth.
00:38:04Furtz, ninth.
00:38:05Heidfeld, tenth.
00:38:06Valese, twelfth.
00:38:07Eleventh.
00:38:08And Villeneuve in twelfth.
00:38:09He also got held up very badly in that.
00:38:10Sontor, Berti, Ralf Schumacher, Messacani, Diniz and Josef Verstappen, the final car running in 18th place.
00:38:17Are those rain spots on the camera?
00:38:20We'll be back with you in a moment while all this action continues in Austria.
00:38:31There's your top six.
00:38:32Stay with us.
00:38:33And John is back in the A1 ring in a moment.
00:38:39Spielberg in Austria, the Grand Prix of Austria.
00:38:42And Fox Sportsnet.
00:38:43And Rubens Barrichello has just done what we anticipated, up the inside.
00:38:48That's into the Remus curve.
00:38:49And I think that the man from Ferrari may well have gone down to the man from Saab, Eric,
00:38:53and said, don't make our life difficult.
00:38:55Here we go again.
00:38:56A good shot right down the inside.
00:38:57Mika does give him plenty of room to go through.
00:39:00And, of course, Rubens goes away.
00:39:03And this is Rubens Barrichello moving from fifth up into fourth place.
00:39:07And ahead of him is the Aero with the super tech engine,
00:39:10which is, in effect, the basis, possibly, of Renault's return to Formula 1.
00:39:15It's a developed engine.
00:39:16And it's doing a great job.
00:39:18And a very slippery Aero is driven superbly by the young Spanish driver,
00:39:22Pedro de la Rosa.
00:39:32De la Rosa, he debuted in Australia in 1999.
00:39:37And his best Grand Prix so far was sixth at the Nürburgring.
00:39:40He had another great race in the terrible conditions.
00:39:43He had sixth place at one point in the championship.
00:39:45Look, Ralf Schumacher coming in the pit lane.
00:39:46Sorry, John.
00:39:47Yes.
00:39:48Rather sad.
00:39:49He was being right back there.
00:39:50He didn't make advantage of that incident at the start.
00:39:52Looks like they're taking something off the front of the car.
00:39:55It's the front left wing is down.
00:39:57He must have had contact either as a result of that first corner,
00:40:00first lap shunt, or something we have not seen.
00:40:02It's been off camera.
00:40:03But disappointment for Ralf Schumacher.
00:40:05The Schumacher brothers are having a pretty torrid day today.
00:40:09Well, the whole weekend's been pretty bad for both of them.
00:40:13Look at these McLarens.
00:40:14Absolutely in a class of their own.
00:40:16Storming away at the front.
00:40:18But without Schumacher to push them,
00:40:19it's hard to believe that anybody's going to work them over.
00:40:21Max Barry Keller was making great inroads into them.
00:40:25Well, there's a nice little battle going on.
00:40:27Jacques Villeneuve remaining in the BARs.
00:40:32I wonder where his teammate is.
00:40:33Right behind him.
00:40:34I was going to say, there's two white cars there, John.
00:40:37I didn't like to say that.
00:40:38Well, I just wondered if that happened to be...
00:40:41I couldn't believe it after the incident
00:40:42when he tipped the back of Michael Schumacher's car.
00:40:45He had to go into the pits and maybe get a nose replaced and that.
00:40:48But he's running directly behind his teammate.
00:40:51And I think when he gets out of the car,
00:40:52he'll probably want to run straight into the BAR team bus
00:40:55and not see Michael Schumacher for some considerable time.
00:41:11Well, there.
00:41:12Just had a quick glimpse of the Svengali
00:41:15of the McLaren Formula 1 team.
00:41:16McLaren Mercedes-Benz.
00:41:17That's Ron Dennis.
00:41:18He's the man that really has been responsible for Micah Hackett
00:41:22and over the years that he joined the team since 1993.
00:41:27And defending him, saying he was psychologically tired.
00:41:29Now, Derek, have you ever been psychologically tired?
00:41:32I don't think so.
00:41:33But it's certainly...
00:41:34Whatever it was that was wrong with him,
00:41:35he's gone away and had a break from it all.
00:41:37And he's come back firing on all 12 cylinders.
00:41:39So all 10, should I say.
00:41:40So you can't complain about that.
00:41:42Whatever it was, he's back firing well now.
00:41:45And the two McLaren Mercedes-Benz running in formation.
00:41:48I'm sure team orders have said,
00:41:49listen guys, we've got a gift here this afternoon.
00:41:52Stay in position.
00:41:54And I'm quite certain that Ron Dennis will not impose team orders
00:41:59in spite of the fact that actually David Coulthard
00:42:01is currently second in the championship.
00:42:04And it would be in the interest of the team to let Coulthard, I suspect,
00:42:07take the additional points for winning this race
00:42:09than having Micka Hakkinen.
00:42:11Well, I think it'll all depend on what happens at the pit stops, John.
00:42:13Ralf Schumacher has just come in the pits yet again.
00:42:16So he has more problems with his car than we first saw.
00:42:19But I don't think he'll be sorry either.
00:42:20He's had a lurid weekend, as we said before.
00:42:22Jenson Button having a slightly better weekend there.
00:42:25It looks like they wheeled it away.
00:42:26But that's enough is enough.
00:42:28Well, that's disappointment indeed.
00:42:29And Ralf Schumacher,
00:42:30I don't understand what went wrong with Williams BMW this weekend.
00:42:34They've been superb pretty much throughout the entire season.
00:42:36Here, they just didn't get the car to work.
00:42:38And Jenson Button outqualified Ralf Schumacher
00:42:41just by one place.
00:42:42But nonetheless, that one place was important.
00:42:45Well, Button's in seventh place currently
00:42:47with Marc Genet in the minority
00:42:49right behind him in eighth.
00:42:50Absolutely amazing.
00:42:53And Alexander Wurz there in eighth place.
00:42:55There right behind as well.
00:42:57Sorry, in ninth place is Wurz.
00:42:59And now John O'Lazyton.
00:43:01And for Ralf Schumacher,
00:43:02he didn't finish the race here last year either.
00:43:05So last year not doing the younger,
00:43:08the Schumacher brothers very many favours.
00:43:10Just an interesting thing, Derek,
00:43:12in terms of stats.
00:43:13For David Coulthard,
00:43:14he has started his 100th career Grand Prix.
00:43:18He's won nine of those
00:43:19and three of them have come this year.
00:43:21And he now eclipses
00:43:22that great three-time Scottish world champion,
00:43:24Jackie Stewart,
00:43:25who only competed in 99 Grand Prixs.
00:43:28Great record for Stewart,
00:43:30for Coulthard,
00:43:31Scott,
00:43:32and I'm sure Jackie Stewart
00:43:33will be one of the first to walk up to him and say,
00:43:35Congratulations, David.
00:43:36That's a burden I've carried since 1973.
00:43:39It's now yours.
00:43:41We just heard that Ralf Schumacher
00:43:42is actually still sitting in his car
00:43:44as they're working on the front suspension,
00:43:46despite it being in the garage.
00:43:50I'd just like to point out,
00:43:51it's not a good place to be.
00:43:52There we go,
00:43:53it's one of the pros.
00:43:54It looks like O'Lazy
00:43:55going down the inside of Wurz,
00:43:56then loses it.
00:43:57Wurz goes back,
00:43:58thank you very much,
00:43:59down the inside.
00:44:00Well, that was one of your favourite
00:44:01overtaking spots, Derek.
00:44:02And it is possible,
00:44:03but it's difficult.
00:44:04You can see what happened.
00:44:05He overran the corner
00:44:06and the other car
00:44:08was able to cut back.
00:44:09Here we go again.
00:44:10O'Lazy down the inside.
00:44:12Is he going to...
00:44:13Yes.
00:44:14He pushes him out.
00:44:15But he got it too sideways,
00:44:16you see.
00:44:17He lost time.
00:44:18If only he could have come in
00:44:19a bit neater than that.
00:44:20And Alexander says,
00:44:21Thanks, lad.
00:44:22I'm back in front again of you.
00:44:25Some of the guests
00:44:26in the Jordan team pits.
00:44:27Jordan always manages to bring along
00:44:28a few celebrities
00:44:29to each of the Grand Prixs.
00:44:31Sometimes it's from sports,
00:44:32sometimes it's from the world
00:44:33of show business.
00:44:34And other times it's just
00:44:35some of Eddie's closest
00:44:37and most personal friends.
00:44:43Micka Hakkinen clearly
00:44:45absolutely back on the top
00:44:47of his form.
00:44:49And that sort of period
00:44:50where he went into a rather
00:44:51sort of a dull petrol,
00:44:52one might say,
00:44:53is behind him.
00:45:02Well, that was riding
00:45:03with Rubens Barrichello,
00:45:04as you saw.
00:45:05And he's some 15 seconds behind.
00:45:07He's losing half a second,
00:45:08three quarters of a second,
00:45:09a lap to the McLaren.
00:45:11So he's not making inroads on that.
00:45:13But he's still six seconds behind
00:45:15de la Rosa,
00:45:16who you see right here.
00:45:18Fine piece of driving.
00:45:19I bet Arrows cannot believe this.
00:45:22Well, I think the team
00:45:23has done a great job this year.
00:45:24They've got two young drivers.
00:45:25They're not particularly
00:45:26in a good position.
00:45:27They're not particularly
00:45:28high in anybody's choice
00:45:29of driver for the future.
00:45:31But de la Rosa,
00:45:32very, very strong indeed
00:45:33in a couple of races this year.
00:45:35And Jos Verstappen,
00:45:36the veteran
00:45:37from the Benetton days
00:45:38back in 94.
00:45:40We got a glimpse
00:45:41into the Williams garage
00:45:42as the team work
00:45:43on that front suspension.
00:45:44I suppose they can treat
00:45:45the remaining Grand Prix
00:45:46really as a glorified test session
00:45:48to try and work out
00:45:49why their cars
00:45:50weren't competitive here at all.
00:45:58Villeneuve right behind Nick Heifel.
00:46:05He did something a little bit about Nick
00:46:07and got by him
00:46:08with Zonta behind him as well.
00:46:09Zonta's not going to play
00:46:10any games with Villeneuve.
00:46:12Here, of course,
00:46:13we have the side of Burtz
00:46:14and Alési
00:46:15still going hammer and tongs,
00:46:16going along the top straightaway
00:46:17up to 180 miles an hour
00:46:19in sixth gear.
00:46:20Let's see if Alési
00:46:21has another look down the inside.
00:46:22Is he?
00:46:23He's dodging to one side.
00:46:24Has a look.
00:46:25No.
00:46:26He doesn't want to get
00:46:27the chance of losing it.
00:46:28It's a pretty down fast corner there.
00:46:29115 miles an hour
00:46:30as they go through the first part.
00:46:32And, of course,
00:46:33it's a battle.
00:46:34Oh, and he comes alongside Burtz
00:46:36as they try to fight their way down
00:46:38through the middle of this
00:46:39middle of the track.
00:46:40He's still behind him.
00:46:41It's a battle between
00:46:42the two engine manufacturers,
00:46:43the Supertec engine,
00:46:44which is effectively
00:46:45a Renault engine
00:46:46in the Benetton.
00:46:48And in the Prost,
00:46:49you've got the Peugeot V10
00:46:50and Prost have been
00:46:51complaining,
00:46:52and very publicly too,
00:46:53Derek,
00:46:54about the lack of commitment
00:46:55and performance
00:46:56that Peugeot have been
00:46:57giving the Prost team.
00:47:02So as we watch this
00:47:03continuing battle,
00:47:04and there it is,
00:47:05Alain Prost in the pits,
00:47:06and there we look at
00:47:07the top six.
00:47:08Join us back here in Austria
00:47:09at the A1 ring
00:47:10in a moment.
00:47:14The National Sports Report
00:47:15nightly at 10 and 12.
00:47:17It's the all-new
00:47:18National Sports Report,
00:47:19the show that gives you
00:47:20a complete wrap-up
00:47:21of all the day sports news.
00:47:23With the internet interaction,
00:47:24scores and highlights,
00:47:25opinions and analysis.
00:47:27The National Sports Report
00:47:28nightly at 10 and 12
00:47:29only on Fox Sportsnet.
00:47:30Check your local listings
00:47:31for the start time
00:47:32in your area.
00:47:33Well, you were saying
00:47:34all that, John.
00:47:35Here's the lazy going-by
00:47:36Alexander Wurz,
00:47:37moments ago.
00:47:38Clear bit of road this time.
00:47:40Much tighter corner.
00:47:41Gets in there well,
00:47:42and he's away.
00:47:43Well done, John,
00:47:44just at turn one.
00:47:45That's it,
00:47:46now he's going to pull away.
00:47:47There we go,
00:47:48another shot of it.
00:47:49Haven't seen too much
00:47:50overtaking by the Prost
00:47:51this season.
00:47:52It's a pity it happens
00:47:53to be on Wurz,
00:47:54who's the local hero,
00:47:55or was.
00:47:59And this is looking
00:48:00into the Benetton pit.
00:48:04They're not too happy
00:48:05about that,
00:48:06because they've dropped down
00:48:07now from ninth
00:48:08to tenth position.
00:48:09Well, there's another
00:48:10couple of drivers
00:48:11out on the track.
00:48:12In fact,
00:48:13they're both Brazilians.
00:48:14One's Pedro Diniz,
00:48:15the other Ricardo Zonta.
00:48:16And the stewards
00:48:17are analysing, I think,
00:48:18film of that start,
00:48:19that first corner incident.
00:48:20And it could be
00:48:21that both drivers
00:48:22might make a...
00:48:23Well, there we see Zonta,
00:48:24ten-second stop-go penalty.
00:48:26So he's been given
00:48:27the penalty
00:48:28for his responsibility,
00:48:29Ricardo Zonta.
00:48:31And also,
00:48:32we just also heard now
00:48:33that Diniz is going to have
00:48:34the same kind of punishment
00:48:36for that involvement
00:48:37in the first corner.
00:48:38Here we look back
00:48:39at that corner
00:48:40on the first lap,
00:48:41Ricardo Zonta.
00:48:43So he'll be given
00:48:44the message via the radio link.
00:48:46It'll also be a visual
00:48:47from the pit lane
00:48:48at the end of this lap.
00:48:49I would think that he
00:48:51and the car directly behind
00:48:52Pedro Diniz
00:48:53will be into the pits
00:48:54to serve out that
00:48:55ten-second stop-go penalty.
00:48:57As a consequence,
00:48:58there is confirmation
00:48:59that Ralf Schumacher,
00:49:01having had work carried out
00:49:02on the front suspension
00:49:03of his Williams BMW,
00:49:04goes back out on track
00:49:07and it'll just turn
00:49:08into a test session.
00:49:11That's Jacques Villeneuve
00:49:12in the BAR.
00:49:13Right behind him
00:49:14is Zonta.
00:49:15But of course,
00:49:16you must point out
00:49:17that when Zonta goes
00:49:18for his ten-second penalty,
00:49:19it's not only ten seconds.
00:49:20He has to go in the pit lane
00:49:21at 55 miles an hour
00:49:23and come out
00:49:24at 55 miles an hour.
00:49:25A long pit lane
00:49:26and he's going to lose
00:49:27a lot of time.
00:49:29Well, Jacques Villeneuve,
00:49:30he won here in 97.
00:49:31And Jacques Villeneuve
00:49:32won an awful lot of races.
00:49:33Unfortunately,
00:49:34none of them occurred
00:49:35in the BAR,
00:49:36which is now powered
00:49:37by the Honda.
00:49:38And a lot of speculation
00:49:39about his future.
00:49:40Is he going to stay
00:49:41with the team?
00:49:42Is he going to move
00:49:43to Benetton?
00:49:44Well, Pedro Diniz,
00:49:45the first of those
00:49:46two stop-go penalties.
00:49:47We see him drop in
00:49:48and also Zonta.
00:49:49In fact, both have dropped in
00:49:50at the same point.
00:49:52And they've got to get down
00:49:53to that speed limit.
00:49:54And it's interminable, Derek,
00:49:55the length of the time
00:49:56in the pit lane.
00:49:59And they cannot do
00:50:00any work on the car.
00:50:01Of course, while it's in,
00:50:02they can't refuel it.
00:50:03They can't replace tyres.
00:50:04He just sits there
00:50:05and it seems an eternity,
00:50:06as you said.
00:50:14Well, I remember
00:50:15Pedro Diniz
00:50:16talking to Ricardo Zonta.
00:50:17Zonta confirming
00:50:18how good it was
00:50:19for his career
00:50:20to be in the third row
00:50:21of the grid.
00:50:22And, well,
00:50:23that was certainly
00:50:24part of the exercise
00:50:25this weekend.
00:50:26And while we were
00:50:27in the commercial break,
00:50:28we also saw
00:50:29Jos Verstappen
00:50:30in his Arrow Supertec.
00:50:32He came into the pit
00:50:33retired.
00:50:34He actually ran off track,
00:50:35I think, as a consequence
00:50:36of what was being reported
00:50:37as a gearbox problem.
00:50:38So, one of the two Arrows.
00:50:40But the other one
00:50:41running still
00:50:42very, very strongly indeed.
00:50:43It's now
00:50:4419.3 seconds
00:50:45behind
00:50:46Ray Cedar-Mika Hakkinen
00:50:47in third place.
00:50:48And there we see
00:50:49our top six.
00:50:51Fourth career
00:50:52Grand Prix in Austria.
00:50:53The 98 winner
00:50:54Mika Hakkinen.
00:50:5599, of course,
00:50:56a little bit more problematic
00:50:57with that second corner.
00:50:58A tap
00:50:59from behind
00:51:00from his teammate.
00:51:02Jenson Button
00:51:03still in seventh.
00:51:04All the way down
00:51:05Bill Nerve in twelfth.
00:51:10So, let's look
00:51:11at the start here.
00:51:12We've got the replay.
00:51:13Now, watch
00:51:14the white car.
00:51:15You can see behind
00:51:16taps the back of the Ferrari.
00:51:17That's Michael Schumacher
00:51:18then.
00:51:19Trulli gets involved.
00:51:20Denise is somewhere involved.
00:51:21Barakella has to go
00:51:22way, way out
00:51:23onto the beach
00:51:24to avoid all that.
00:51:25Michael now
00:51:26explaining to Jean Todd
00:51:27and, well, actually,
00:51:28yes, that was
00:51:29a fairly big impact.
00:51:30You're right, Michael.
00:51:31We even felt it here.
00:51:34So, out of the race
00:51:35we've got Michael Schumacher,
00:51:36Jarno Trulli,
00:51:37Giancarlo Fisichella,
00:51:38Heinz-Harold Fremsen
00:51:39in the Jordan
00:51:40and Jos Verstappen
00:51:41in the Arrows.
00:51:43A disaster
00:51:44for Michael Schumacher.
00:51:45Of course,
00:51:46those ten points
00:51:47for a win
00:51:48which he had hoped
00:51:49he might scoop up
00:51:50here this afternoon.
00:51:51He's got no chance.
00:51:52The proof
00:51:53is in second place
00:51:54in the championship
00:51:55but also
00:51:56in second place
00:51:57in this race.
00:51:58So, whether McLaren
00:51:59are going to implement
00:52:00team orders,
00:52:01they say they won't
00:52:02until one of their
00:52:03two drivers
00:52:04has no chance
00:52:05of being a contender
00:52:06in the championship
00:52:07but while both drivers
00:52:08are in contention,
00:52:09he's going to leave it
00:52:10to the other drivers
00:52:11on the track.
00:52:12What I find difficult
00:52:13to understand
00:52:14is why
00:52:15David Coulthard
00:52:16isn't hanging on the tail
00:52:17of Mika Hakkinen
00:52:18so that when they do
00:52:19have their pit stops
00:52:20there is that possibility
00:52:21that
00:52:22Hakkinen's pit stop
00:52:23might be a second or so
00:52:24longer
00:52:25allowing David
00:52:26into the lead
00:52:27but David is five seconds
00:52:28behind.
00:52:29I think Mika Hakkinen
00:52:30has just been
00:52:31absolutely the old
00:52:32Mika Hakkinen
00:52:33and particularly
00:52:34those final two corners.
00:52:35That's where the real
00:52:36advantage
00:52:37that Hakkinen has.
00:52:38We're looking at
00:52:39that first corner
00:52:40of the two
00:52:41that's the Jochenwink curve
00:52:42and then they come
00:52:43into the A1 curve.
00:52:44Hakkinen has been
00:52:45in a class
00:52:46of his own throughout
00:52:47the weekend
00:52:48and that's where
00:52:49the three tenths
00:52:50of a second
00:52:51almost four tenths
00:52:52of a second
00:52:53between Hakkinen
00:52:54and Coulthard
00:52:55was generally
00:52:56being gained.
00:52:57Third place
00:52:58and a wonderful
00:52:59third place
00:53:00for the young
00:53:01Spanish driver
00:53:02Pedro de la Rosa
00:53:03really a team
00:53:04that is very much
00:53:05a part of the
00:53:06middle field
00:53:07and looking down
00:53:08we see the Ferrari team
00:53:09in the gap
00:53:10between de la Rosa
00:53:11minus 5.7
00:53:12and that'll be
00:53:13coming down
00:53:14I'm sure
00:53:15Rubens Barrichello
00:53:16will be continually
00:53:17easing into the advantage
00:53:18that de la Rosa
00:53:19currently has
00:53:20in third place
00:53:21but this'll be a race
00:53:22Derrick
00:53:23between the young
00:53:24Spaniard
00:53:25and the young
00:53:26Brazilian.
00:53:27Well Johnny
00:53:28he isn't actually
00:53:29I have to say
00:53:30de la Rosa
00:53:31is not losing
00:53:32any time
00:53:33to Barrichello
00:53:34at all.
00:53:35Barrichello's
00:53:36pulling out
00:53:37and I was going
00:53:38to say
00:53:39he was
00:53:40pulling out
00:53:41of the way
00:53:42quickly enough
00:53:43and quite rightly
00:53:44too
00:53:45and good work
00:53:46from the young
00:53:47driver in the
00:53:48minority
00:53:49to make sure
00:53:50that he does
00:53:51use his mirrors
00:53:52when you're on
00:53:53your own
00:53:54sometimes you can
00:53:55fall asleep
00:53:56and clearly
00:53:57he was wide
00:53:58away.
00:53:59Well information
00:54:00going out
00:54:01to make a
00:54:02happen
00:54:03in shift
00:54:04and revs
00:54:05and I suspect
00:54:06that they're
00:54:07going to make
00:54:08it like
00:54:0917,000
00:54:10probably what
00:54:11he's instructed
00:54:12to do.
00:54:13Well there's no
00:54:14pressure whatsoever
00:54:15on the McLaren
00:54:16Mercedes-Benz team
00:54:17and the most
00:54:18important thing
00:54:19right now
00:54:20for the team
00:54:21we might think
00:54:22it's the drivers
00:54:23championship
00:54:24Derrick
00:54:25but really
00:54:26it's about
00:54:27the team
00:54:28championship
00:54:29which Ferrari
00:54:30are currently
00:54:31leading by
00:54:32six points
00:54:33from the McLaren
00:54:34team.
00:54:35Now there's
00:54:36another
00:54:37driver
00:54:38who's
00:54:39currently
00:54:40in fourth
00:54:41place
00:54:42and with three
00:54:43points available
00:54:44so let's look
00:54:45at those
00:54:46constructors points
00:54:47as we came in
00:54:48Ferrari leading
00:54:49in 88 points
00:54:50from 82
00:54:51from McLaren
00:54:52Benetton
00:54:53down in
00:54:54third place
00:54:55in 18
00:54:56Williams
00:54:57fourth
00:54:5817
00:54:59Jordan
00:55:00fifth
00:55:01and 11
00:55:02and of course
00:55:03BAR down
00:55:04in sixth
00:55:05and we will
00:55:06not want to
00:55:07turn down
00:55:08Dennis's
00:55:09thoughts
00:55:10we saw
00:55:11them at the
00:55:12top of our
00:55:13show
00:55:14thinking that
00:55:15the tough
00:55:16get going
00:55:17they're going
00:55:18to whatever
00:55:19it is
00:55:20anyway
00:55:21Ron made
00:55:22the comment
00:55:23and certainly
00:55:24it might be
00:55:25easier as
00:55:26he suggested
00:55:27to come from
00:55:28behind and
00:55:29claw back
00:55:30both in terms
00:55:31of drivers
00:55:32victories and
00:55:33in terms of
00:55:34the team's
00:55:35championship
00:55:36and certainly
00:55:37they've come back
00:55:38with a vengeance
00:55:39here this
00:55:40afternoon
00:55:41all of
00:55:42course was
00:55:43helped by
00:55:44Ricardo Zonta
00:55:45just having
00:55:46that unintentional
00:55:47tip into the
00:55:48rear of
00:55:49championship
00:55:50leader
00:55:51Michael
00:55:52Schumacher's
00:55:53Ferrari
00:55:54so as we
00:55:55go to break
00:55:56let's have
00:55:57a quick look
00:55:58and see
00:55:59who our
00:56:00top six
00:56:01are
00:56:02stay with us
00:56:03in a minute
00:56:04as we go
00:56:05through our
00:56:06top six
00:56:07on Fox
00:56:08Sportsnet
00:56:09and just
00:56:10if anybody
00:56:11happened to
00:56:12come in and
00:56:13not catch
00:56:14the start of
