The President of the Scrap Iron Dealers Association says it will set up its own unit to visit scrap metal yards in this country to ensure they are being properly operated.

The Association's president said this is to help eradicate the problem of scrap metal theft.

He made the announcement while speaking with Juhel Browne about a new extension of the scrap metal licences granted by the Trade Ministry.

00:04Trade and Industry Ministry from August 15th to February 14th of next year, the
00:11Scrap Iron Dealers Association is focusing on those who are operating in
00:15the industry without licenses. The Association's President Alan Ferguson
00:20spoke with TV6 News about that via telephone.
00:30Mr. Ferguson then
00:59made reference to the concerns he expressed during a media conference on
01:03Wednesday when he announced state-owned Heritage Petroleum Company Limited had
01:08written to the Association because of theft on its property. Mr. Ferguson told
01:35TV6 News that the Scrap Iron Dealers Association will be taking action to
02:05Mr. Ferguson said the Association is working to avoid the government
02:14shutting down the industry again. He repeated his previous claim that 25,000
02:20people work in the local scrap metal industry.
02:50Mr. Ferguson emphasized that this is causing a serious problem in the scrap
02:57metal industry in Trinidad and Tobago.
