00:00:00Ferrari's free spirit, Eddie Irvine, has become the new hero of the Formula One season.
00:00:07Victorious in the opener in Australia, in Austria, Irvine held off the McLaren Mercedes
00:00:13charge for his second victory.
00:00:15Then just two weeks ago, Irvine and teammate Mika Salo combined for the first one-two Ferrari
00:00:22finish in Germany in 17 years.
00:00:25Irvine is hungry for a three-peat today.
00:00:51Welcome to Fox Sports coverage of FIA Formula One world championship racing today.
00:00:57Round 11, the Grand Prix of Hungary from the Hungaroring outside Budapest.
00:01:01Hello, everybody.
00:01:03I'm Mike Joy alongside five-time Le Mans winner, former Ferrari F1 driver Derek Bell and in
00:01:09the pit lane from the London Sunday Times and F1 racing magazine, Peter Windsor.
00:01:14Well, Eddie Irvine's two consecutive victories have placed him atop the driver's standings.
00:01:19He enjoys a big bulge over Mika Haakonen, Heinz-Harold Frentzen in third, moving last
00:01:26race past Michael Schumacher who is out injured, David Coulthard, a big knot there, only three
00:01:31points separating third through fifth, and Ralph Schumacher sixth.
00:01:35Among the constructors, Ferrari has now moved to a big advantage over McLaren Mercedes,
00:01:41Jordan solid in third, then Williams, Benetton and Stewart.
00:01:44Well, let's have a look back, Derek, just two weeks ago at the German Grand Prix.
00:01:49Yes, and what a race it was.
00:01:50A great Hockenheimring in Germany, the ultra-fast circuit, probably the fastest circuit in the
00:01:54calendar.
00:01:55There was no Michael Schumacher there, but they were certainly thinking about him.
00:01:58He'll be back very shortly, we hope, to set the world alight yet again.
00:02:02But at the start, what a great start there was there for Mika Haakonen.
00:02:06The Jordan is pushed across.
00:02:07Mika Sala has a good start, but then, Mika, look at the instant of the corner, Villeneuve
00:02:12hits the nits.
00:02:13Let's see what Sala has to say.
00:02:14To be honest, it wasn't really a good start.
00:02:17My reaction time was good, but actually G, pulling off, wasn't that great.
00:02:21But I think everybody else has screwed up around me, so I just made it look good.
00:02:25David Coulthard suffered yet again.
00:02:27He ran in the back of that man, Mika Sala, knocking his nose off, damaging it anyway.
00:02:31David really never recovered from this setback early on in the race.
00:02:35And then it was Damon Hill that was having a pretty tough time in the race.
00:02:38He wasn't happy with his qualifying, he wasn't happy in the race.
00:02:40Twice he went off, complaining of problems with the brakes, and finally just said, I've
00:02:44had enough, it's not safe.
00:02:46Mika Hakkinen, meanwhile, he lost the advantage he had leading the race when he had a very,
00:02:50very long pit stop.
00:02:51He came out fourth place behind the two Ferraris and the Jordan.
00:02:55Mika got by the Jordan, but unfortunately he had a tire come off the, sorry, the tread
00:03:00actually come off the tire.
00:03:01Look at that, he slews around across the gravel, straight in the barrier.
00:03:06One heck of an accident, but he got out totally unscathed because of that great tire wall
00:03:09they had there.
00:03:10Eddie Irvine found himself in the lead when Mika Sala was asked to pull over.
00:03:15It was teamwork.
00:03:16Whatever the team's orders, let's hear what Mika has to say about it.
00:03:18I heard it on the radio and I didn't want to hear it.
00:03:23I heard, they just told me, Ross said on the radio that, Mika, we want you to let Eddie
00:03:28pass on this lap.
00:03:29And I said, sorry, I can't hear you.
00:03:33But Eddie, well, this is third winner of the year, two races in a row.
00:03:38Can he do another one this week?
00:03:39What a great drive from Mika Sala, pity he had to pull over, but that was team orders.
00:03:44Well, and what a wild one.
00:03:45Who would have thought, Derek, at the start of this season that Eddie Irvine would be
00:03:48looking for three wins in a row?
00:03:49Well, certainly, but of course he did win the first Grand Prix of the year, so perhaps
00:03:52there was some writing on the wall.
00:03:54Well, well done, Eddie.
00:03:56You know, silly season has begun.
00:03:58Who's going where and what of the rest of this season?
00:04:01There's a lot of news this week.
00:04:02Let's get to the paddock and Peter.
00:04:04Lots going on in a very crowded Hungarian Grand Prix paddock.
00:04:07He won't admit it, of course, but we believe that Eddie Irvine has already signed to drive
00:04:11next year for the Stewart Ford team.
00:04:13And it won't necessarily be the Stewart Ford team that we know and love.
00:04:16It'll be a new British Racing Green coloured Jaguar Ford team.
00:04:20Jaguar, of course, being a brand name owned by the Ford Motor Company.
00:04:23Now, who'll take his place at Ferrari?
00:04:25For a long time, we thought it would be Rubens Barrichello, and indeed, he has been negotiating
00:04:29with Ford and with Ferrari, trying to get his retainer up.
00:04:32What's been going on in the meantime?
00:04:34Mika Sala's done a great stand-in job for Michael Schumacher, and he is now hotly tipped
00:04:38to retain his place at Ferrari next year.
00:04:41That would mean two Finns right at the top of Formula One, and that might have a destabilising
00:04:45effect on Mika Häkkinen.
00:04:46That's what the Ferrari people might believe.
00:04:48That's one of the rumours.
00:04:50Michael Schumacher, desperate to get back into Formula One, tried to test the car at
00:04:54Fiorano last week, and at the last minute, a medical adviser said, Michael, give it a
00:04:58few more days.
00:04:59So Schumacher postponed that test.
00:05:01He seems likely to test the car this week, and at the moment, Ferrari are talking about
00:05:04possibly coming back for the Italian Grand Prix at Monza.
00:05:07However, if Irvine nor Häkkinen score points today, it's possible Michael will come back
00:05:12for the Belgian Grand Prix.
00:05:13Big board meeting at the BAT BAR team last week, and BAT have injected a lot more cash
00:05:18into that team.
00:05:19The question is, at what point will they draw the line?
00:05:22Results needed from that team, certainly.
00:05:24Back to you.
00:05:25What they need right now, Derek, is a finish.
00:05:26They've not finished a race all season.
00:05:28No, they've had a dismal, dismal time, and I expect they've taken some money out of next
00:05:31year's budget, I have a feeling.
00:05:34Look at Mika Häkkinen.
00:05:35David Coulthard just returned from a recon lap.
00:05:37A nice thing they do here in Hungary, in addition to the starting grid signs, they
00:05:41also have a very large national flag of each driver adjacent his grid spot.
00:05:47The Ferraris are certainly hot this season.
00:05:51Eddie Irvine, two wins and a third in his last three starts, and Heinz-Harold Frentzen,
00:05:55a win, a third, and two fourth places recent.
00:05:58Mika Salo, second, and only his second start for Ferrari, who has 31 points in its last
00:06:03three races.
00:06:05As for who's not, Mika Häkkinen, only four points in his last three starts.
00:06:10Alex Zanardi, no points, Jacques Villeneuve, no finishes, Fisichella, no points the last
00:06:15four starts, and Stewart, in the last three races, they have also come up empty handed.
00:06:24Mika Häkkinen debriefing after a recon lap.
00:06:27When we come back, we'll have a look at qualifying, but first, among the rumors swirling at Williams,
00:06:33Alex Zanardi.
00:06:35Will he return to kart for the year 2000, or is he solidly back on this side of the
00:06:40ocean in Formula 1?
00:06:41Peter asked him.
00:06:42I guarantee you, and this is, again, not to say, I want to stay here because here is better,
00:06:48because I had great times there, great relationship with the fans, that they welcomed me like
00:06:54an American driver, and actually I take the opportunity to say hi to everybody, and great
00:07:00people to share a lot of emotions with in the little world of kart, and, you know, fantastic,
00:07:09but that's what it is, a wonderful memory that is stuck here in my heart, and if one
00:07:15day I would go back there, it's because I miss it so terribly that I want to get another
00:07:53go at it, and that's what it is, a wonderful memory that I want to get another go at it,
00:08:00and if one day I would go back there, it's because I miss it so terribly that I want
00:08:06to get another go at it, and if one day I would go back there, it's because I miss it
00:08:12so terribly that I want to get another go at it, and if one day I would go back there,
00:08:19and if one day I would go back there, it's because I miss it so terribly that I want
00:08:26to get another go at it, and if one day I would go back there, it's because I miss it
00:08:33so terribly that I want to get another go at it, and if one day I would go back there,
00:08:40it's because I miss it so terribly that I want to get another go at it, and if one day
00:08:47I would go back there, it's because I miss it so terribly that I want to get another
00:08:53go at it, and if one day I would go back there, it's because I miss it so terribly that I
00:08:59want to get another go at it, and if one day I would go back there, it's because I miss
00:09:05it so terribly that I want to get another go at it, and if one day I would go back there,
00:09:13it's because I miss it so terribly that I want to get another go at it, and if one day
00:09:20I would go back there, it's because I miss it so terribly that I want to get another
00:09:26go at it, and if one day I would go back there, it's because I miss it so terribly that I
00:09:33want to get another go at it, and if one day I would go back there, it's because I miss
00:09:40it so terribly that I want to get another go at it, and if one day I would go back there,
00:09:47it's because I miss it so terribly that I want to get another go at it, and if one day
00:09:54I would go back there, it's because I miss it so terribly that I want to get another
00:10:00go at it, and if one day I would go back there, it's because I miss it so terribly that I
00:10:07want to get another go at it, and if one day I would go back there, it's because I
00:10:14miss it so terribly that I want to get another go at it, and if one day I would go back there,
00:10:21it's because I miss it so terribly that I want to get another go at it, and if one day
00:10:28I would go back there, it's because I miss it so terribly that I want to get another
00:10:35go at it, and if one day I would go back there, it's because I miss it so terribly
00:10:42that I want to get another go at it, and if one day I would go back there, it's because
00:10:49I miss it so terribly that I want to get another go at it, and if one day I would go back there,
00:10:56it's because I miss it so terribly that I want to get another go at it, and if one day
00:11:03I would go back there, it's because I miss it so terribly that I want to get another
00:11:09go at it, and if one day I would go back there, it's because I miss it so terribly that I
00:11:16want to get another go at it, and if one day I would go back there, it's because I miss
00:11:23it so terribly that I want to get another go at it, and if one day I would go back there,
00:11:30it's because I miss it so terribly that I want to get another go at it.
00:12:00do that last year, and boy, did he benefit from it. And of course, engine cooling. The
00:12:04engines are always in the rev, always in the power band. Important you try and watch, keep
00:12:08your eye on that engine cooling.
00:12:11One of the unanswered stories from our last race two weeks ago is what happened to the
00:12:16tires on the McLaren. David Coulthard had a crash. Mika Haakonen, of course, crashed
00:12:19out of the race, running forth after leading. So Peter's done a little digging back in the
00:12:25paddock area, both with McLaren and Bridgestone. Peter, what have we learned?
00:12:30All quiet in the Bridgestone tyre compound here in Hungary, but still reverberations
00:12:34felt in the pit lane from those two tyre failures on Coulthard's and then Haakonen's car in
00:12:38the German Grand Prix. Coulthard in qualifying, Haakonen, of course, in that race. A spectacular
00:12:42accident from which he walked away with a stiff neck. Very lucky to do so.
00:12:46What was the cause of that accident? Well, a lot of speculation that the rear wing of
00:12:50the McLaren came loose prior to the incident and put a cut in the tyre. That has now been
00:12:54discounted by both McLaren and by Bridgestone. Also, discussion about tyre pressures. Were
00:12:59McLaren running less than recommended tyre pressures in their cars at the German Grand
00:13:03Prix? Bridgestone have a window, an operating window of around 15 to 20 PSI, and yes, Mika
00:13:08Haakonen's tyre on that first run was fractionally below that. But then you'd expect that. He
00:13:13did have a blistered left rear on that first run, and behind a safety car, for example,
00:13:17tyre pressures dropped much lower than that. So really, tyre pressure's not a factor here.
00:13:22What was the cause? Well, both parties have put out a press statement basically saying
00:13:25there was no tyre failure, nor was there a structural failure on the car. So, Derek,
00:13:29fairly typical Formula One-type press release there. Although I do gather that for the Italian
00:13:34Grand Prix at Monza, another high-speed circuit, the construction of the tyres will be somewhat
00:13:37different. Back to you. Well, as a driver, I'd certainly like to know what the problem
00:13:41was before I do the next race. Yeah, kind of strange that everyone's being very tight-lipped
00:13:45about what happened. More on this crash-filled season when we come back, but last week I
00:13:50was in Indianapolis to see a 1998 Stewart Ford installed in the Speedway Hall of Fame
00:13:55that is open every day. If you'd like to see one of last year's $850,000 Formula One cars,
00:14:01there it is in the Speedway Museum as things are shaping up for the US GP 2000. Welcome
00:14:10back to our Toyota pre-race coverage for the Grand Prix of Hungary. Jacques Villeneuve
00:14:14strapping into his B.A.R. on a day that is perhaps not as hot as the teams feared. It's
00:14:21only 76 degrees. The track temperature, 93. Moderate humidity and slight chance of rain.
00:14:27Just a little bit of a breeze. We appreciate your comments as Damon Hill dons his helmet.
00:14:32Formula One at foxsports.net is our e-mail address. Derek and I and Larry Hall, our producer
00:14:37and everybody here, reads every e-mail. We can't respond to all, but we'll try to incorporate
00:14:42your concerns into our future telecast, which include the Grand Prix of Belgium, August
00:14:4729th, 10 a.m. local time, and then we move to noon local time for the Grand Prix of Italy
00:14:52and Europe in September and Malaysia in October, and the season finale in Japan will be live
00:14:58on foxsports.net. Again, the national flags of the drivers displayed alongside the grid
00:15:05positions as the grid is rather chock full, and so is that hillside. This is the closest
00:15:10Grand Prix to Finland. 23 charter flights of Finnish fans to be here. I wonder what
00:15:19size the planes were. I hope they weren't two-seaters. They've got a big, huge crowd
00:15:24here from Finland. Well, there have been a lot of crashes in 1999. We have not been keeping
00:15:32track of the mechanical carnage, but some folks in the paddock have. Peter has more.
00:15:39Oh, no! That is it. Oh! But that's Schumacher! Whatever the outcome of the 1999 Formula One
00:15:50World Championship, this will undoubtedly be remembered as the year they hit the wall.
00:15:54Micah Hakkinen, Michael Schumacher, Jacques Villeneuve, Ricciardo Zonta, rookies, world
00:15:58champions, they all did it. They all went into the sand trap. They all hit the wall.
00:16:02They all incurred more damage than we've ever seen before in Formula One. Is it coincidence?
00:16:06Is it cyclical? I spoke to Sir Frank Williams, asked him this question. Frank has been running
00:16:10at the front of Formula One for over 30 years. I believe that's really a question for the
00:16:14drivers, but I do know for a fact that our accident rate, not major accident, but our
00:16:23accident damage rate, is three times what it was two years ago. We were on our 29th
00:16:31or 31st nose, 14th front wing. All those bits at each end of the car, they keep getting
00:16:39damaged. Formula One chief Bernie Eccleston wants to revert to slick tyres to curb the
00:16:43crash rate, but FIA president Max Mosley, who predicts a rise in cornering speeds, disagrees
00:16:48with him. So does Frank Williams think we will continue to race on group tyres? At least
00:16:53in 2000. It's an unpredictable matter, actually. Two very strong and powerful men appear to
00:17:02be diametrically opposed. I'm not so sure they ever really are. I think they may be
00:17:06posing, but we'll see. Posing? Well, of course, Sir Frank Williams uses this word in the strictly
00:17:11theatrical sense, which means that the two main actors, and I mean actors, Bernie Eccleston
00:17:15and Max Mosley, have currently adopted positions at either end of the stage. Who's actually
00:17:20going to win this battle? Well, we'll see when the curtain goes up. My feeling is that
00:17:24probably we'll stay with group tyres. Guys, what do you think? Back to you. Well, I think
00:17:28if posing is the word, they ought to quit it and get on with worrying about driver safety
00:17:31or something. It really does get hurt. And in addition, it is unacceptable to have 30
00:17:36noses broken by three quarters of the way through the season. Well, coming up next year,
00:17:40the Grand Prix 2000 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the return of the U.S. Grand Prix.
00:17:45And when I was there last week, I got to walk the entire course. It is fully paved, but
00:17:49there is still much work to do. The new garages for F1 and all. We know how important this
00:17:54is to Ford. We've heard that in prior telecasts, but also it's a very important event to Mercedes.
00:18:00Here is Norbert Haag. We are looking forward to the U.S. Grand Prix. I think that is a
00:18:09great venue coming up and that it takes place in Indianapolis makes it even more special.
00:18:15We have enormous interest on the American market. We sell, we have record sales with
00:18:20Mercedes-Benz there. And obviously, after the merger Daimler-Chrysler, we even have
00:18:25more interest than before. And so this is a very, very special venue for us. And I'm
00:18:31sure we're going to do something there. We have ideas in bringing our two-seater over,
00:18:36so probably arrange a co-ride, maybe even for a well-known celebrity in the U.S. or
00:18:43maybe with one of the all-time greats in motor racing. We have lots of ideas, and
00:18:52you can be sure that Daimler-Chrysler supports this Indy Grand Prix, and we are really, really
00:18:59happy to coming back to America.
00:19:01They had a big Formula 1 display at the Brickyard 400 last week at Indy, featuring their website
00:19:09and phone number for ticket information that you see on the screen as Eddie Irvine dons
00:19:13the balaclava and gets set to go to work.
00:19:15Yes, it's going to be a pretty, or a very important race for Eddie Irvine today. He's
00:19:20got to get a superb start here to get ahead of Mika, and then Mika's going to have to
00:19:23try and get by him, because I think if Mika gets in front, Eddie may well drop back.
00:19:27So today the start could be everything. When we come back, we'll go Formula 1-on-1 with
00:19:32a two-time winner of the Hungarian Grand Prix, but first, what of Sylvester Stallone's Formula
00:19:391 movie? Well, he is here at the Hungaroring and gives Peter an update.
00:19:43Looks like everything's going to happen around April. We're here talking with Bernie, and
00:19:49everything seems to be working well. We've just run over a few script issues, but what's
00:19:53great is the longer it takes, the more drama is being presented in these races, so the
00:19:57script is getting better and better, better than I can imagine it.
00:20:04The Grand Prix of Hungary on Fox Sportsnet is brought to you by Pep Boys. Cars like
00:20:09us, people love us. And by Toyota. Every day belongs to you. Make it count. Toyota every
00:20:17day. A look at the Danube River and the city of Budapest, an excellent location to observe
00:20:24the solar eclipse. August 11th, the BAR team came out to have a look and perhaps pick up
00:20:29a little good luck. No doubt the highlight of their week. So far, they need their
00:20:34first finish of the season today. Well, Peter has a chance to go Formula 1 with a former
00:20:41world champion who picked up his first ever Formula 1 win right here in 1993.
00:20:46It's a big weekend for Damon Hill. He's found these current cars on these tires very difficult
00:20:53to drive, and of course, he is to retire at the end of the season. He loves Hungary, though,
00:20:58so in many ways, this is a make or break weekend for him. I asked him about this, about his
00:21:02great record on this circuit, and about the big decisions facing him in the future.
00:21:08I'd say Hungary is one of the tracks that I seem to go well at, and I think it has a
00:21:14lot to do with the fact that I actually enjoy driving on it. It sometimes gets a bad press
00:21:19because it's quite difficult to pass. In fact, it's almost impossible to overtake on it,
00:21:23which would put it down as being not one of the best circuits from a racing point of view,
00:21:29but from a driving point of view, it's fun.
00:21:32Fun's always been something that I think has been important to you in your racing career.
00:21:35Are you actually enjoying yourself now that you've made that decision to stop at the end
00:21:39of the year?
00:21:40Well, I still enjoy driving the cars. I still enjoy the competition. The thing that I really
00:21:49enjoy less and less is really the interference, I call it, from the business of being involved
00:21:59in Formula 1.
00:22:00Were you misquoted after the French Grand Prix when you said that maybe you might stop
00:22:04before the end of the year?
00:22:05Well, that's not what I said, you see, so that's a very good example. I said that might
00:22:09have been my last race, because at the time, that might have been my last race, and I can't
00:22:13go into the detail of why. All I was saying was I was stating the case so that, for the
00:22:18record, it was recognised that there was a possibility that that might have been my last
00:22:24race.
00:22:26Making the decision to stop when you did, I think one of the things you were trying
00:22:29to do was to take away some of that pressure that you were living under. Has that not happened?
00:22:34Has it in fact been the opposite?
00:22:37No, I think that it would have been there anyway, because the writing's on the wall.
00:22:46I'm 38. I'm the oldest guy in Formula 1, and if I wasn't involved in the countdown to my
00:22:53retirement from Grand Prix racing, I'd be involved in either contract negotiations or
00:23:01the absence of them. If I wasn't getting involved in contract negotiations, then everyone would
00:23:06be writing me off and I would be forced into retirement.
00:23:09Do you already start thinking about next year at this point?
00:23:12Well, I don't have to think about who I'm driving for, but I have thought about what
00:23:19I'm doing. But quite frankly, I want to do very little, because I want to do the things
00:23:25that I've postponed and had to put off, because I haven't had time because I'm driving. There's
00:23:31a lot of those things to do.
00:23:33Fun things?
00:23:34Fun things, but also things with the family and being at home for a period of time and
00:23:43just sitting back. John Lennon said, watching the wheels go round and round. There can be
00:23:49some satisfaction in actually dropping out for a bit.
00:23:51Do you think you'll watch Formula 1 on television?
00:23:53I'm sure I'll watch it on TV. I'll probably go for the whole lot, the digital, everything,
00:24:01and sit there and just quietly chuckle to myself.
00:24:05Thank you very much, Damon.
00:24:07Thank you.
00:24:08Yes, strange days for Damon Hill. There's a certain tension in the air, but there's
00:24:12also still that genuine love for racing. Let's hope he races well today and that he goes
00:24:16out on a high note at the end of the season.
00:24:20Damon Hill has never finished out of the points here at the Hungaro Ring and has two of his
00:24:2522 Grand Prix victories and nearly gave Arrows its first Formula 1 win here when he finished
00:24:30second in 1997.
00:24:31Yes, I think, as far as Damon's concerned, Hungary is a very special track. I think if
00:24:38you win here, you then always have it as one of your favorites. I think it's typical of
00:24:41all drivers.
00:24:43Look at all the Finnish flags, Derek. They're a huge crowd here. Mika Haakka and Mika Salo
00:24:47have both commented on it this weekend that there's a tremendous number of their countrymen
00:24:52here. Formula 1 draws about an 85% rating on television in Finland.
00:24:59Welcome back to our Toyota pre-race coverage of the Grand Prix of Hungary, getting set
00:25:12for the formation lap. As the tire warmers come off, let's give you this Toyota starting
00:25:18grid for today's race. There is your pole sitter, Mika Haakkanen, who has his ninth
00:25:23pole of the season.
00:25:24And Eddie O'Vine, who wanted to be on the front row. Look how close he is. One-tenth
00:25:27of a second slower.
00:25:30David Coulthard will start from the inside of the second row in his McLaren. He was fastest
00:25:34in this morning's practice.
00:25:36And Fizikela, what a great job he's done in the Benetton this weekend, after lots of good
00:25:39testing.
00:25:40Heitz-Harold Frentzen starts from fifth. It's his fifth fifth-place start of the season.
00:25:45He was third in the morning warm-up.
00:25:47And Damon Hill equaling his best grid position of the year.
00:25:50Starting seventh will be Alexander Wurz for Benetton. Those aerodynamic improvements they've
00:25:54been working on have been successful.
00:25:57Barry Kello qualified on the Series 4 engine, and he's actually racing on the Series 3 today.
00:26:03Now in row five, as the formation lap is underway, Jacques Villeneuve in the BAR qualifies ninth
00:26:08and found good balance in his car.
00:26:11Johnny Herbert will be happy to be right that close to Barry Kello.
00:26:14John Alacey, after that difficult practice crash Saturday morning, qualified 11th. But
00:26:20he was sixth in the morning warm-up.
00:26:22And Pedro Doniz, alongside his teammate.
00:26:24In the seventh row will be both the pros. Jarno Trulli, who is tipped to make a move
00:26:28for next season, and Olivier Pani, who finished fifth here in 96.
00:26:34Back in the eighth row, Alex Zanardi for Williams was blocked on his first two qualifying runs
00:26:39and made a mistake on his third. And Ralf Schumacher is way back and has struggled with
00:26:44grip all weekend.
00:26:47In row nine will be Riccardo Zonta, who lost speed in the second sector.
00:26:51They're still looking for why.
00:26:53And Mika Salo is way back in 18th position.
00:26:57He has just struggled and was no faster on new tires than on worn ones.
00:27:01So Salo having great difficulty here.
00:27:05Luka Badoeur inside the tenth row in the minority.
00:27:07Pedro De La Rosa in the arrows.
00:27:09And the final row is Tora Takagi's arrows and Mark Janne's minority.
00:27:14Janne's minority benefited from last week's test.
00:27:18But there he sits, anchoring the grid.
00:27:23And 3.7 seconds slower is a lot.
00:27:26That's carrying the anchor, to be sure.
00:27:27And Salo will find that too.
00:27:29Riding with Jean Alessi.
00:27:31You notice Alessi's helmet, as he described two races ago.
00:27:34Those are the colors Sylvester Stallone will wear in the Formula One movie that we'll
00:27:39start filming next April.
00:27:41This is such a critical start for these guys at the front.
00:27:44Obviously for everybody around them.
00:27:45But for the two men at the front, the one that gets in the lead will dictate this race
00:27:50for some time, unless he makes an error, of course.
00:27:52But dictating is from the front today.
00:27:55Very little overtaking.
00:27:56The only place really is coming down past the pits, entering to turn one.
00:28:00But that is difficult because it drops away downhill and you can so easily dive inside
00:28:04and then actually not get the grip and slide off road.
00:28:06I hope one day I'll get the opportunity to race on or certainly drive on this beautiful
00:28:10circuit, which is a driver's track and certainly isn't necessarily for spectators.
00:28:14Well, the cover blurb of Autosport this week calls this the race Mika Håkonen must win.
00:28:20And I would agree, Derek, if he wins and Irvine scores no points, Håkonen retakes the lead
00:28:27in the world championship by two.
00:28:30But they just have to get McLaren back on track.
00:28:33Their last win here in 1992 with Ayrton Senna.
00:28:36There are the points.
00:28:37Ten points for a win with Valt Håkonen into the lead should Irvine score six or worse.
00:28:42Yes, they've got to keep really clean the whole race through.
00:28:46They can't make any errors.
00:28:47A lot of dirt comes on the track and this is what upsets the drivers and can't have
00:28:50them flying off the road because they're so committed to some of these corners.
00:28:54Such a difficult track to pass on.
00:28:56This race could be decided here in the next ten seconds at corner one.
00:29:00Here we go with the start of the Hungarian Grand Prix.
00:29:08Great start from Mika Håkonen.
00:29:10Superb start.
00:29:11And look at Fizzy Keller coming through.
00:29:13He's right up there too.
00:29:14Is he going to get Irvine?
00:29:15No, he doesn't.
00:29:16Oh, excellent.
00:29:17Look at Jordan in there and David Coulthard going around the outside.
00:29:20Not a good place for David to be, I have to admit there, but he's still on the road.
00:29:23Only just, though.
00:29:24Frentzen equal with him.
00:29:25Here comes Frentzen around the outside of Coulthard and he is going to take over the
00:29:29position.
00:29:30Frentzen to fourth.
00:29:31Coulthard back there in fifth.
00:29:33And Damon Hill, who has never finished out of the points at this racetrack, is on the
00:29:38move.
00:29:42Good clean start.
00:29:43A very clean start.
00:29:45David Coulthard didn't quite make the moves he wanted to make.
00:29:49And he didn't get ahead of the Jordans, which is really what he needed to do.
00:29:52He's got to get up there to show his performance.
00:29:54He has signed, of course, for next year with McLaren, so he'll be relaxed in that mode,
00:29:58but he certainly still needs to score.
00:30:00He's got to get some points.
00:30:01He's had some dismal races recently.
00:30:04Håkonen, Irvine, Fisichella, Frentzen, Coulthard, Damon Hill.
00:30:08Eddie Irvine did not get the start he wanted.
00:30:11He commented after qualifying that sometimes starting on the dirty side of the track, that
00:30:16is the offline side of the track, is a disadvantage, but he's had good starts here.
00:30:20He says the start is 20% track, 80% technique, and it appeared he got 70% of that 80% on
00:30:26the start this time.
00:30:27Absolutely.
00:30:28You remember, of course, this track is not used, apart from this particular weekend,
00:30:32as far as I'm aware.
00:30:33So consequently, it does get a lot of dust on it.
00:30:36Takes time to clean it off.
00:30:42There's Damon Hill, and right behind him is Barrichello.
00:30:45In the Stewart, the Saubers battling.
00:30:48Alessi and Diniz.
00:30:51Salo doesn't seem to be coming up that fast.
00:30:53He is in the picture just yet.
00:30:54Poor old Mika.
00:30:55Not an easy place when you're that far back.
00:30:58Mind you, he hasn't shown all weekend.
00:30:59I think the position he's in is probably where he should be.
00:31:02Well, some of the comments made during the week were that Mika Salo's success at Hockenheim.
00:31:09Let's have another look at the start.
00:31:10Excuse me.
00:31:12What a great start for Hockenheim.
00:31:13He just rockets off the line.
00:31:15There's so little, if any, wheelspin at all.
00:31:17Look at Fisichella coming up alongside Eddie Irvine, but he manages to block him out of
00:31:22the corner.
00:31:23Well, as Fisichella went left, way down to the inside went Barrichello.
00:31:27He was almost down against the guardrail as they went three wide into that corner.
00:31:31But as Fisichella went left, it opened up the right lane for Frentzen, and that's how
00:31:34he was able to pip Coulthard.
00:31:41Well, Mika Hockenheim is in position to wire this race.
00:31:45Yeah, Irvine has got to stay with him.
00:31:46Sorry, Mike.
00:31:47I mean, Irvine just has to stay with him.
00:31:48Not that easy to stay that close because of the turbulence behind the car, but Eddie is
00:31:53dropping back, in my opinion, too far too soon.
00:31:55He might stay at strategy, but we'll have to see just what Ross Braun in the pits has
00:31:59got for Eddie Irvine in the form of strategy.
00:32:02Irvine was asked earlier in the week, I was saying, about Mika Salo.
00:32:05And he said at Hockenheim, the speed differential of the Ferrari allowed Salo to shine.
00:32:10But he says this is a circuit where you really need to have a high level of trust in the
00:32:15car and really be able to throw it in the corners.
00:32:18And he says that perhaps Mika Salo has just not had enough time in the Ferrari to develop
00:32:24that level of trust and confidence in the car to be really fast here.
00:32:28Yes.
00:32:29You see, Hockenheim is very much a circuit where you point and squirt the car.
00:32:33This circuit, you have a lot of very fast corners, one leading into the other, into
00:32:37the other.
00:32:38And that's why the drivers like it, because they get the rhythm right.
00:32:41It's absolutely so satisfying.
00:32:45So Hockenheim leads from Irvine, the defending world champion, and the would-be champion
00:32:50who looks to win his third race in a row today.
00:32:53There's one-two.
00:32:57And there, of course, we see the Benetton of Fisichella.
00:33:00And remember, the Fisichella is on the super soft tires, as are the Jordans and, of course,
00:33:06as are the Saubers.
00:33:07And I would expect to see a little bit the Fisichella up there a little bit higher on
00:33:12the softer tire.
00:33:13At this stage of the race, that is.
00:33:15He is the third place car.
00:33:17Now, on the grid, they were separated.
00:33:20On the grid, they were separated, the first four drivers, or first five, rather, by only
00:33:25a tenth of a second each.
00:33:26But you see how quickly things change once we get to race pace.
00:33:30And it looks like Frentzen is under some pressure there from Coulthard.
00:33:34He will be, because it's very apparent that the McLaren is running very well.
00:33:38This is a lazy.
00:33:39Let's be honest with him.
00:33:50That was Denis just ahead, his teammate, and you saw it the one corner on every lap.
00:33:56Alessi looking for a move on Denis, feeling that he's faster.
00:33:59Well, the last thing he can afford to do is take his teammate out.
00:34:02Yes.
00:34:03And the last thing he will do.
00:34:04So he's going to be stuck with this position for some time, unless, of course, Alessi,
00:34:07sorry, unless Denis makes a little error.
00:34:09The one thing that is not in the Formula 1 sort of code book these days, of course,
00:34:15is gear shifting on the old gear shift.
00:34:17When the old gear shift, when he had the lever, there was always that possibility
00:34:20the driver in front of you might not quite get the right gear,
00:34:23particularly when there were six speeds.
00:34:25And so you might benefit from it.
00:34:26Now with the paddle shift, the gear lever actually on the steering wheel,
00:34:30it means the drivers really can't make an error.
00:34:32If it goes down one gear, it goes down one gear.
00:34:34And that's it and all about it.
00:34:35Yeah, they're very reliable.
00:34:36And I read somewhere there are 2,200 shifts to be made in a race here.
00:34:43Hopefully all without incident.
00:34:45So Mika Okunin leads from Eddie Irvine.
00:34:47His last lap was half a second faster than Irvine.
00:34:51Pizzechella, Frenson, Coulthard, and Hill are the first half dozen after four laps.
00:34:56Barrichello, Wurz, the Saubers of Denis Alessi, Truly and Herbert, the top dozen.
00:35:02Villeneuve, Salo, Zanardi, Ralf Schumacher, Penne, and Badawer,
00:35:05de la Rosa, Salo, Takagi, and Marc Genet.
00:35:10Welcome back to Fox Sports coverage of the Grand Prix of Hungary.
00:35:17As we look at Pizzechella running in third.
00:35:20The biggest movers in this race so far.
00:35:23Heights Harold Frenson had moved up to fourth among the front runners.
00:35:28Jack Villeneuve started ninth and has lost four positions.
00:35:32They briefly brought out a new nose cone to the BAR pit and then put it away.
00:35:37But his teammate Riccardo Zonta has picked up three positions from 17th to 14th.
00:35:43Right behind Jacques in fact.
00:35:47So we watch Pizzechella and the Benetton aerodynamic changes over the last two weeks.
00:35:51Both Fizzi and Alexander Wurz very happy with those changes.
00:35:55And it's evident in their performance as they run in third and eighth.
00:35:59Well they have had this problem all year where the car hasn't had the downforce when they've required it.
00:36:03And it's only worked like the high speed stuff they've worked well.
00:36:06But on the slowest corners where they need a lot of downforce it hasn't worked.
00:36:09So they went off to France instead of going to Silverstone testing and my goodness it obviously has worked for them.
00:36:13Look at all the dust on that corner there.
00:36:15If you get it a bit wide on the second part you're going to get on that dust and who knows where you'll go.
00:36:21Because it's a good ploy when you're in the lead to run over that little bit of road and throw the dirt there for the next bloke.
00:36:26We used to do it with stones.
00:36:27Now of course it's only sand that's on the edge of the track.
00:36:30The old Riverside, California race week.
00:36:32Parnelly Jones was revered as the greatest stone thrower of all time.
00:36:38Well Haakonen holds a 4.1 second lead on Eddie Irvine.
00:36:42Fizzikel is 9.7 seconds back.
00:36:44And then this battle 12 seconds off the lead where Frensen is trying to hold off Coulthard.
00:36:49Yes and of course that's probably what he will do.
00:36:52Not easy for David to do anything about it at all.
00:36:55So he's just got to cool himself down.
00:36:57Remember that Frensen is on the super soft tyre compound.
00:37:01Which I'm led to believe by the Bridgestone technicians.
00:37:04That what happens initially is that you get tremendous grip from the back end of the car on this super soft compound.
00:37:10Which makes an understeer or push.
00:37:12Then the front tyre starts to come in and you actually get a very very good balance.
00:37:16So they will start to speed up later on in their stint this super soft tyre.
00:37:20Only used before at Monaco.
00:37:23The teams have a choice of several compounds at each race.
00:37:27And must declare their tyre choice before qualifying.
00:37:30And stay with that then through qualifying the warm up and the race.
00:37:34Team owner Eddie Jordan has to be thrilled with Frensen's performance this season.
00:37:39After the off season swap that sent Frensen to Jordan and Ralf Schumacher to Williams.
00:37:46Yes I'm sure of it.
00:37:47Ralf Schumacher wishes he stayed just where he was.
00:37:49Because he'd be doing exceptionally well now.
00:37:51As is this man, the other young German, Heinz-Arnold Frensen.
00:37:54Rather Schumacher, Ralf Schumacher is right where he started the day.
00:37:57In 16th position.
00:37:59And there you see Damon Hill.
00:38:01Who has scored points in every career start.
00:38:05At the Hungaro ring there's Hill in 6th place.
00:38:08And he is about to come under pressure from Barrichello.
00:38:11Then Alexander Wurz, the blue car, is the Benetton.
00:38:14And still the Saubers of Deniz and Alessi run 9th and 10th.
00:38:18Damon locking up an inside tire as he goes downhill.
00:38:20This is not a difficult thing to do on this circuit.
00:38:22Because of the way the track drops away as you turn down into it.
00:38:28It's a very, very abrasive surface on tires.
00:38:31Probably the most abrasive of the year.
00:38:33And the reason for that I believe is because the track just isn't used as much as most circuits.
00:38:37Because they don't have too much motor racing in Hungary, I'm sad to say.
00:38:42Damon Hill's 4th at San Marino, his best of the season.
00:38:45And should Lady Luck smile his way, he could eclipse that here.
00:38:50At a circuit he calls one of his favorites.
00:38:52And on which he has won twice, 93 and 95.
00:38:59You see Jordan has that little wing mounted on top of the airbox there over the driver's head.
00:39:05That gives him a tad more downforce.
00:39:08I wanted to talk a little about the braking problems that Damon Hill had in Germany.
00:39:13We saw him lock up the wheels several times and he said the car was just evil to drive.
00:39:17What we're led to believe, and we're only led to believe,
00:39:21is the fact that he wasn't running the same type of brakes as Heinz Hauer-Frentzen.
00:39:27On the morning of the race, for the race, they put in these Hitco brakes.
00:39:32Now the Hitco brake is obviously a different manufacturer to Brembo, etc.
00:39:36And they need a much, much higher pedal pressure.
00:39:40And Damon found, as he gets in the race, to his surprise,
00:39:42that he has to push the brake pedal a lot harder.
00:39:44This, in fact, got his foot numb.
00:39:46He found he couldn't brake as well.
00:39:48But not only that, when he went to apply the throttle,
00:39:50he didn't have the sensitivity.
00:39:52And he found himself, he just couldn't drive it.
00:39:54So he said, I've had enough, the car isn't safe for me to drive.
00:39:57He didn't criticize the car, just the fact that it wasn't safe.
00:40:00And not knowing why at the time.
00:40:02Of course, all this has come out in the ensuing weeks.
00:40:04And if that was me, I'd have been pretty darn upset with my team
00:40:07for not telling me or even asking me what they were going to do.
00:40:09No official statement,
00:40:11but this is what we've been able to glean
00:40:13from the paddock area
00:40:15as to what happened to Damon Hill at Hockenheim.
00:40:19Ralf Schumacher has passed Zanardi for 15th
00:40:23and there's Williams off.
00:40:25And that is Zanardi.
00:40:27Probably totally in sympathy for Ralf going by.
00:40:29Not a good thing to do.
00:40:31Zanardi is finding it very difficult.
00:40:33Here we go, let's watch.
00:40:35He just gets out too wide on that turn there.
00:40:37It's a gravel trap.
00:40:39Extension of the road, of course.
00:40:41And gets back on again.
00:40:43Hope he doesn't damage the aerodynamics on the left front.
00:40:45Looks like he might have done some damage to that wing.
00:40:47Penne and went past.
00:40:51So did Luca Badawer and perhaps even De La Rosa.
00:40:55I can't believe that Salo has dropped positions
00:40:58and is behind De La Rosa and Badawer.
00:41:00Remember that Badawer is the Ferrari test driver
00:41:02and was very galled at the fact that he wasn't
00:41:04asked to drive the Ferrari
00:41:06this year because he's the test driver
00:41:08and does all the work on the cars.
00:41:10They bring in Mika Salo. I can't quite see why
00:41:12but today one must wonder.
00:41:14Badawer is up to 18th in his last lap.
00:41:16A minute 26.0.
00:41:18Mika Salo has fallen to 20th
00:41:20but now his lap times have picked up a bit.
00:41:22He's a minute 25.2.
00:41:24Well Mika Hakkinen is doing all he can
00:41:26as Alex Zanardi comes pit side.
00:41:28So apparently there was damage.
00:41:30Can't tell if that left front tire is down or not.
00:41:32It's a dark shot.
00:41:34I don't know if it was the left.
00:41:36It looked like he was pulling straight in the garage.
00:41:38Out of race.
00:41:40Another sad day for Alex Zanardi.
00:41:42The two-time kart champion
00:41:44and just having a dreadful Formula 1 season.
00:41:46I think although he never really
00:41:48explains the real differences
00:41:50I think one has to look at the difference between
00:41:52Formula 1 and Indy cars. We can't go into the technical side.
00:41:54We'll do that another time which is very interesting
00:41:56and we will make a point of that
00:41:58on a technical piece but I think
00:42:00a kart car really moves
00:42:02around a lot more. It's a much easier
00:42:04car to drive I might say.
00:42:06When you consider how quickly
00:42:08Formula 1 drivers seem to adapt to karts
00:42:10yet kart drivers don't adapt that quickly
00:42:12to Formula 1. Having said
00:42:14that remember of course Villeneuve came over
00:42:16to Formula 1 but he did do something like 3,000
00:42:18miles testing during the winter for Williams
00:42:20before he went out. And also when Villeneuve came
00:42:22to Formula 1 the cars were running slicks
00:42:24and they would have driven
00:42:26from what we understand and what we're told
00:42:28much more like the kart cars that he
00:42:30came from. There wasn't nearly as much
00:42:32transition as required of
00:42:34Zanardi. Well I mean another good example
00:42:36is look how Mikasalo's doing. He's never
00:42:38been to kart. He's driven Formula 1
00:42:40for some years now. He's had reasonable successes
00:42:42and he cannot make even the Ferrari work
00:42:44on this track. So how can you expect
00:42:46Alex Zanardi to do so?
00:42:48There's Eddie Irvine 6.6
00:42:50seconds back. We're talking about
00:42:52how tough luck
00:42:54Alex Zanardi has had this season.
00:42:56Look at the Williams drivers this year
00:42:58in 11 starts. Now Zanardi has
00:43:008 DNFs in 11 starts.
00:43:02Ralf Schumacher has scored
00:43:0422 points but with 3
00:43:06DNFs in the 10 races
00:43:08that he has started prior
00:43:10to today.
00:43:12Look at Hakkinen.
00:43:14I mean 12 laps and he is just
00:43:16streaking away. Doing an
00:43:18outstanding job.
00:43:20He somehow has this class
00:43:22act that seems to become world champion.
00:43:24He just can get his head down and just go for it.
00:43:26I mean he should have won all the last
00:43:28Grand Prixs but through bad luck
00:43:30and through mechanical failures he just
00:43:32hasn't done it. He is streaking away.
00:43:34I'm sorry. Yes and Norbert Haag threw a glove
00:43:36at Eddie Irvine figuratively
00:43:38when he said Irvine didn't win the last
00:43:40two races. We lost them.
00:43:42Well basically he's right and I think that's why
00:43:44there wasn't so much euphoria from Eddie
00:43:46after the win at Hockenheim the other day
00:43:48because he knows darn well that he didn't really win it.
00:43:50McLaren lost it. Ah Derek
00:43:52but they all count and when you read
00:43:54the inaugural Grand Prix guide two or three
00:43:56seasons hence everybody will remember Eddie Irvine
00:43:58won but few will remember
00:44:00why. Well don't worry we've all had lots
00:44:02of victories like that. Look at this
00:44:04Mika Salo here.
00:44:06Salo pulling down
00:44:08on Pedro de la Rosa. This battle is
00:44:10for 18th place.
00:44:14Salo who handed
00:44:16the victory to Irvine on team orders
00:44:18two weeks ago now finds himself
00:44:20in the depths of the running order
00:44:22struggling. I just
00:44:24can't believe he hasn't got the power to get by. This Ferrari
00:44:26is meant to have so much power.
00:44:30The gap back to our
00:44:32race leader Mika Hockenheim
00:44:34seven and a half seconds up on
00:44:36Eddie Irvine then Fisichella, Frentzen
00:44:38Coulthard and Damon Hill.
00:44:40We'll be right back.
00:44:44Welcome back to
00:44:46Fox Sportsnet coverage of the Grand Prix of Hungary
00:44:48Mike Joy with Derek Bell and
00:44:50Peter Windsor. You're watching the battle
00:44:52for fourth place Heinz-Harald Frentzen
00:44:54in the Jordan and David Coulthard
00:44:56McLaren Mercedes.
00:44:58Keith Olbermann and Kevin Frazier
00:45:00bring you all the day's scores, highlights and
00:45:02breaking stories. Fox Sports News
00:45:04primetime is nightly at ten.
00:45:06Check your local listings.
00:45:08Mika Hockenheim
00:45:10has led every one of the sixteen laps
00:45:12thus far from Eddie Irvine
00:45:14Shacarla Fisichella, Heinz-Harald
00:45:16Frentzen, David Coulthard and Damon
00:45:18Hill the first six.
00:45:20And Derek, if any of these drivers
00:45:22are on a three-pit stop strategy
00:45:24a 77-lap race, if you
00:45:26broke that in equal segments, they'd begin
00:45:28coming in in a lap or two.
00:45:30Yes, they would. I can't believe they will be on
00:45:32three, but certainly I wouldn't be surprised if
00:45:34the majority of them are on two, but the way
00:45:36Eddie Irvine's dropped back is either because Mika Hocken
00:45:38is driving so outstandingly well, which I believe
00:45:40he is and always does, or that
00:45:42Eddie is only on a one-stop strategy
00:45:44and he's slipping back a bit
00:45:46because he has the heavier fuel load, but
00:45:48that is only my own silly
00:45:50speculation or possibility.
00:45:52Well, the last lap, Hockenheim, Irvine
00:45:54and Fisichella were within a tenth of a second
00:45:56of each other, but Hockenheim has
00:45:58opened up a nine-second lead on
00:46:00Irvine and 17 seconds
00:46:02on the third-place car,
00:46:04the Benetton of Fisichella.
00:46:06In fact, Hockenheim will be coming up to lap
00:46:08to Kagi
00:46:10not very long from now.
00:46:12There he is, right in front of him
00:46:14and then he's going to have the ignominious
00:46:16task of actually seeing Mika Salo,
00:46:18his countryman, who do not share
00:46:20too many of the same interests
00:46:22for each other, and
00:46:24I think you're going to see some interesting
00:46:26feelings there from Mika Hocken as he goes by
00:46:28Mika Salo, rather awful for him.
00:46:30Look at the time differences.
00:46:32And that's because Hockenheim's on a slow lap
00:46:34when you consider Hockenheim's actually been doing 21s.
00:46:36So to Kagi's lap,
00:46:38Alex Zanardi is in the
00:46:40garage, differential
00:46:42problems on the Williams. Third time
00:46:44this year that Zanardi's been knocked out
00:46:46of a race with differential trouble. This is
00:46:48his fourth Hungarian Grand Prix, his best
00:46:50finish, 13th in 1994.
00:46:54Pit board
00:46:56out for Mika, push!
00:46:58Push what? It means
00:47:00go for it. You've got to start pushing harder.
00:47:02Obviously
00:47:04they've been possibly thinking about
00:47:06the engine temperature, the cooling, and didn't want
00:47:08to get it up because once the temperature goes up, often it's
00:47:10very difficult to get it down. As I did say earlier,
00:47:12they do have overheating problems at the
00:47:14circuit because of how the circuit lies.
00:47:16Although there is a reasonable wind today,
00:47:18I would have thought that the wind would have been enough to cool it down
00:47:20with a temperature of only mid-70s, but
00:47:22the engine is always running in this sort
00:47:24of mid-range band. They never really go
00:47:26decelerate down to virtually nothing and then re-accelerate
00:47:28again. It's all high-speed stuff.
00:47:30Or mid-speed stuff.
00:47:32So the team encouraging Hockenheim to
00:47:34keep up his concentration
00:47:36and race the racetrack
00:47:38because he has no one else to race but the back
00:47:40markers. He has lapped Toro Takagi and he's
00:47:42about to come upon the
00:47:44minority of Marc Genet.
00:47:46And then the next car, Mika Salo.
00:47:48Got Salo involved in a battle
00:47:50with the arrows of Pedro
00:47:52de la Rosa. Salo's
00:47:54only 12 seconds ahead of him on the road, but
00:47:56of course 70 seconds behind him
00:47:58in effect.
00:48:02Hockenheim's lap times versus Eddie
00:48:04Irvine's and you see they've gone just
00:48:06almost identical. Eddie's
00:48:08starting to move on a little bit with his times.
00:48:10Maybe the tires have taken time to settle down, you
00:48:12know, with so many different setups on these cars.
00:48:14Remember it is the highest downforce circuit of
00:48:16the year. Several teams have different
00:48:18downforce settings.
00:48:20Stuff they've never used before. Everybody's working so
00:48:22hard on it.
00:48:24Now this will be Marc Genet just in front of the
00:48:26race leader Mika Hockenheim.
00:48:30She's an 8.4 gap between
00:48:32these two and that's what it's been for the last
00:48:34four laps. It's not that
00:48:36spectacular at the moment. Of course Mika is
00:48:38finding his way. He's got a slower car in front
00:48:40as you know. Marc Genet
00:48:42and he's got to take bite his time. He can't afford
00:48:44to take a chance on him. Now this is what
00:48:46I can't understand is that he can go by
00:48:48only just room though.
00:48:50Only just room.
00:48:52Genet knows only too well. He doesn't want to go out
00:48:54too wide on these corners. There's a lot of dirt out
00:48:56there because people go off the road
00:48:58very, very quickly when they get on the
00:49:00dust. It's not marbles. It's just a dust.
00:49:04Well the next sight that
00:49:06Hockenheim will see in front of him is Mika Salo.
00:49:08Here's a replay
00:49:10and you see Genet left
00:49:12just a lane. Yes.
00:49:14It probably was a lot more in effect when you saw it
00:49:16full frontal but
00:49:18you can see the bumps. You see the little bumps as he
00:49:20comes. Look at the dirt. Look at the sand on that
00:49:22side of the road. You don't want to get on that.
00:49:24It's hardly likely you will but of course you could
00:49:26do if you lost it coming into the first right-hander.
00:49:30And you saw all that dust on the track there.
00:49:32All that dirt that's been kicked up.
00:49:34This will have slowed Mika down a little bit because
00:49:36he's been behind Genet for that
00:49:38lap. Let's just see what the time differential
00:49:40is.
00:49:42Last lap
00:49:44there was 8.9.
00:49:48And here's Irvine. Well 8.8.
00:49:50Very little. Now
00:49:52will Mika Salo
00:49:54become a little bit of a moving
00:49:56chicane for Mika Hockenheim?
00:49:58Well he won't make it any easier for him but I don't
00:50:00think he dare be blatantly
00:50:02blocking Mika Hockenheim at all. As I said
00:50:04there's no love lost between them.
00:50:06Now Salo is getting a lot of publicity
00:50:08and I believe he's a very popular man
00:50:10back in Finland. I still don't think that
00:50:12he would want... Oh dear!
00:50:14Around goes one of the Saubers.
00:50:18Is that a Lacy? Is that Denis? It's Denis.
00:50:22And I don't believe
00:50:24he can restart.
00:50:26Well it's so difficult. You know you have your foot hard
00:50:28on the brake and if you don't happen to dip that clutch in
00:50:30because they do have a clutch, he's out.
00:50:32That's not a good place to be. I think they want to move that car
00:50:34back out of the way. Where are the Marshalls? Let's move it
00:50:36boys. Get it back out. Dodgy place
00:50:38to be.
00:50:40Now he had been locked in a battle with his
00:50:42teammate John Lacy for 9th place.
00:50:44But Lacy got by him
00:50:46and round he goes
00:50:48and he just loses it.
00:50:50You've got to be very clever
00:50:52to keep the engine running when you're having the brakes
00:50:54full on. And of course you've got to find that
00:50:56as you're going backwards. Not an easy thing to do.
00:50:58That is the 8th DNF
00:51:00for Pedro Diniz this year.
00:51:02There's talk of him possibly
00:51:04buying his way to Benetton. Remember he does come along
00:51:06with a very nice bit of sponsorship of about 10 million
00:51:08dollars. He's been to
00:51:10Arrows, he's been to Sauber
00:51:12and I would have thought that was a very good bet for him because Sauber
00:51:14signed a contract with Ferrari to use
00:51:16their engines again next year.
00:51:18So they'll have the engines basically that Eddie Owein
00:51:20is using now next season.
00:51:22Wonderful deal for them. But this guy
00:51:24seems to want to think he wants to move again.
00:51:26I think he ought to stabilize somewhere and stay there
00:51:28and make a mark. So he's talking about going to Benetton
00:51:30and I'm sure Benetton are courting him because
00:51:32boy do they need the sponsorship.
00:51:34Yeah, 10 million is a lot to turn down
00:51:36but I agree with you to develop a relationship
00:51:38with a team, especially he's
00:51:40very young in his career, has a lot of years
00:51:42in Formula 1 ahead of him
00:51:44but needs to start putting some results on the board
00:51:46because
00:51:48your money will only get you so far. Your money
00:51:50won't get you a seat at Ferrari, won't get you a seat at McLaren
00:51:52and you know, how far can he
00:51:54go with that wallet?
00:51:56He has talent but he needs to
00:51:58develop a relationship and
00:52:00get on the podium. Well the fact is
00:52:02of course, oh look how wide Mika went
00:52:04there. He was nearly too wide on that corner
00:52:06but as far as Denis is concerned,
00:52:08he did come in as a paying driver.
00:52:10He came really from nowhere as far as we were
00:52:12concerned. Came in, bought his way
00:52:14into the teams and everybody said oh he's just a very wealthy
00:52:16boy from Brazil, which of course he is.
00:52:18And he has developed. I mean look at the
00:52:20guy. He's up there doing the same times as Alesi
00:52:22same times he out qualified Damon Hill
00:52:24sometimes last year. He is a
00:52:26good driver. At the same time I think he
00:52:28should settle somewhere and get on and do
00:52:30the job. We agree.
00:52:32Oh look at that. Arrows is getting
00:52:34very sideways as he came down there.
00:52:38This is Mika coming up behind Mika.
00:52:42And it'll be interesting to see what happens to Håkonen's
00:52:44lap times as he comes up on Mika
00:52:46Salo. Now he's extended his lead over
00:52:48Eddie Irvine to 11.2 seconds
00:52:50and this is largely because
00:52:52now Irvine has to deal with the
00:52:54traffic. Takagi and
00:52:56Genet and get past
00:52:58them. Two drivers out of race. Pedro Deniz
00:53:00and Alex Zanardi. Deniz's
00:53:02spin and stall
00:53:04and Zanardi differential trouble.
00:53:06Of course you see Irvine
00:53:08there's got a 1 minute 24. That presumably is
00:53:10while he was trying to lap
00:53:12Takagi. Whereas
00:53:14Håkonen got a very quick lap in and suddenly
00:53:16bumped his gap up to 11.2 seconds.
00:53:18You've got to be so careful here as we saw
00:53:20just now when Mika Håkonen
00:53:22did go by Mark Genet
00:53:24and you realize just how important it is to
00:53:26be nice, neat and tidy. Otherwise you get in
00:53:28trouble.
00:53:30Well Salo has turned it up a bit. He's now
00:53:32lapping equal to the speed of De La Rosa
00:53:34and Badour. 16th
00:53:36and 17th place just ahead of them and that
00:53:38group is coming together in a knot
00:53:40so it's going to get very busy
00:53:42up there.
00:53:44Mika Salo has been talking
00:53:46about he's going to have signed a contract
00:53:48very shortly. I think he better hurry up and sign it
00:53:50now. Yeah last week would have been a good time.
00:53:52It was a very good time. He had 6 people after him
00:53:54he said this would have been a very good time to
00:53:56sign it before this weekend because he hasn't
00:53:58shone at all. But I think we know the
00:54:00reason why but then you know one always says
00:54:02a driver of talent will always shine at some
00:54:04point during the event and he hasn't shone
00:54:06today. No and I don't think he's going to be answering his
00:54:08phone these next two weeks.
00:54:10Not with this performance today.
00:54:12So Mika Hakkinen
00:54:1411.7 seconds up on
00:54:16Eddie Irvine who is carrying the flag
00:54:18for Ferrari.
00:54:20Fisichella
00:54:22is 6 seconds back of Irvine
00:54:24Frentzen is 7 seconds
00:54:26back of Fisichella and then Coulthard
00:54:28and Damon Hill
00:54:30Frentzen, Coulthard and Hill all pretty close together.
00:54:34So the BAR team setting up
00:54:36Jacques Villeneuve
00:54:38we reported dropped down to
00:54:4014th position. He has gained one of those
00:54:42back through the retirement of
00:54:44Diniz.
00:54:46Look at Hakkinen right on the back of Salo
00:54:48and Villeneuve is in the pits.
00:54:50They had earlier pulled out
00:54:52a nose, a new nose
00:54:54for Villeneuve and then put it back
00:54:56after he dropped four places.
00:54:58We didn't see the contact and there we do see
00:55:00Mika Salo. A move aside
00:55:02for Mika Hakkinen without any incident.
00:55:04What an ignominious moment
00:55:06for him. He did get the blue flag of course
00:55:08but still ignominious to be overtaken
00:55:10having virtually won the German Grand Prix
00:55:12two weeks ago.
00:55:14Villeneuve a good pit stop there. 8.6 seconds.
00:55:16Pitting at lap
00:55:1823. He's going
00:55:20to be on at least a two and maybe
00:55:22even a three stop race now for Jacques Villeneuve.
00:55:24We'll see. 22 laps are
00:55:26complete. You're watching Formula 1 on
00:55:28Fox Sportsnet.
00:55:32Welcome back to Fox Sportsnet's coverage of the
00:55:34Grand Prix of Hungary from just
00:55:36outside Budapest as we watched on
00:55:38Carla Fisichella running in third.
00:55:4018 seconds off the lead
00:55:42from Mika Hakkinen and
00:55:445.7 seconds back of
00:55:46Eddie Irvine. We welcome your comments.
00:55:48Formula 1 at Fox Sports
00:55:50dot net is our email address.
00:55:52Derek, Peter and I and all of
00:55:54our staff go through and read
00:55:56every single email.
00:55:58So we invite your comments. There's a
00:56:00look at the running order behind the point
00:56:02paying positions back through 12th.
00:56:04Tora Takagi made a pit stop at
00:56:06lap 25 in his
00:56:08arrows. Let's have a look once again
00:56:10at the start of this race. So
00:56:12critical here in Hungary because
00:56:14of the difficulty passing on the circuit.
00:56:18Great start for Hakkinen, for
00:56:20Fisichella and especially for Frentzen on the left
00:56:22side of your screen who comes
00:56:24through for fourth. Irvine just didn't get
00:56:26off the way he was dubious about getting off
00:56:28and I think it might have been in the back of his mind
00:56:30that he just didn't get the traction he wanted.
00:56:32A lot of dust there but nobody did anything nasty.
00:56:36And Fisichella well placed third
00:56:38after getting a very strong start off
00:56:40the fourth. Here he comes, here he comes. He's on the
00:56:42super soft tyres and we were just wondering whether he'd
00:56:44come in. Super soft tyres
00:56:46with three of them on it as we see one of
00:56:48Takagi going extremely
00:56:50slowly but this is Fisichella coming
00:56:52in. He doesn't look like
00:56:54he's going that fast either but he is in an early
00:56:56pit. Remember there was a speed restriction of
00:56:5870 miles an hour. As they
00:57:00round the car, fuel it up.
00:57:02So he'd be running light fuel
00:57:04and of course the super soft tyres.
00:57:108.8 seconds, he surrenders third place.
00:57:12But they were scrub tyres
00:57:14that they put on.
00:57:18So he's on, that means he actually
00:57:20ran them probably yesterday for a couple
00:57:22laps in qualifying.
00:57:24Because he's got so many stops today
00:57:26he's going to be doing three pit stops.
00:57:28They will be obviously
00:57:30putting slightly scuffed tyres
00:57:32on at one of those events, one of those
00:57:34pit stops.
00:57:42Ralf Schumacher is in. He is in
00:57:4413th position.
00:57:46They really seem to come in slowly
00:57:48there, don't they? But of course they picked up the speed
00:57:50limit before that and he is in an early pit. In fact
00:57:52if not the first pit.
00:57:54Ferraris have looked like they're right up
00:57:56there, right behind them. They're preparing right now
00:57:58as well. And of course Benetton
00:58:00look like they're getting ready for the other car in the team.
00:58:04Irvine's coming in right now.
00:58:06So the second place car
00:58:08Eddie Irvine is in.
00:58:12Hanley Fisichella
00:58:14having stopped. I'm not sure if he'll be able to
00:58:16get back out in front of Frensen.
00:58:20God, they put those tyres on so quickly.
00:58:22That good stop, not a demon start
00:58:24as Damon Hill comes in for his stop
00:58:26with Jordan. All coming in around
00:58:28lap 22, 23.
00:58:32Is he going to get out? Yes, Addy
00:58:34goes in front of the Ford.
00:58:36The Stuart Ford. That's Barrichello.
00:58:38So now all
00:58:40of the front six have been in except
00:58:42Mika Hakkinen and Frensen.
00:58:44There, now there's
00:58:46is that Verts?
00:58:487.5.
00:58:527.5, good stop for Benetton.
00:58:54Very good stop. Remember he also is
00:58:56on the super soft tyres.
00:58:58This in fact is
00:59:00on lap 29, lap 30-ish
00:59:02that they're coming in for. Hakkinen about to start
00:59:04it. Mika, of course,
00:59:06neither of the two McLarens have been in yet.
00:59:10That is Olivier Panisse, I believe.
00:59:14Azonta comes in.
00:59:18Nice move.
00:59:26Nice move, he kept out of the way to let
00:59:28Mika Hakkinen go through.
00:59:30The McLarens
00:59:32quite frequently come in after everybody else.
00:59:34I think they like to assess
00:59:36what other teams are doing in their pit strategy
00:59:38and then they come in. It's Heinz-Harald Frensen
00:59:40and the Jordan comes in. So now we've really seen
00:59:42everybody showing their colours. Here it is,
00:59:44Heinz-Harald Frensen coming in now.
00:59:46And we did check on
00:59:48Jacques Villeneuve,
00:59:50who pitted early, Derek, at lap
00:59:5223 and it appears that he can
00:59:54make it on just one more stop. So
00:59:56two stoppers all the way around.
00:59:58Yes, it's sort of what I thought. He came in,
01:00:00he obviously ran a light fuel at the start of the race
01:00:02so he can get some decent position
01:00:04in the race and then they come in
01:00:06and really fill the tanks up to go
01:00:08through to the next
01:00:10two long stops, as it were.
01:00:16You've got that dirt
01:00:18on the track as they come through that chicane
01:00:20up there. Very dodgy corner. Some of the drivers
01:00:22say it's a pity that chicane's there, because
01:00:24it would make it a stunning circuit.
01:00:26Mika Hakkinen going in for his stop.
01:00:28Well, everyone else has been in
01:00:30and everyone else is
01:00:32on new tyres.
01:00:34So here's McLaren Mercedes, the first
01:00:36pit box. Hakkinen slows
01:00:38to the speed limit
01:00:40and comes into the attention of his crew.
01:00:42Now let's just hope they perfected
01:00:44the pit stops. Remember they had a long
01:00:46stop in the German Grand Prix when the guy didn't
01:00:48get the fuel on there properly, but this one looks a really
01:00:50good one. 7.4. What an
01:00:52outstanding piece of work
01:00:54by the McLaren crew there. It's a long
01:00:56pit lane, of course, for him.
01:00:58But he's going to lose any positions
01:01:00by it. He was too far back.
01:01:02Both the VARs
01:01:04passed and Hakkinen
01:01:06re-enters the circuit.
01:01:08And that leaves,
01:01:10I believe, just Coulthard
01:01:12to pit.
01:01:14There's some brake smoke there, or tyre smoke, should I say,
01:01:16as they weave their way down here. Remember,
01:01:18there's an adverse camber on that corner as they work their way down.
01:01:20It's a wonderful
01:01:22circuit to view from, off all the
01:01:24banks. Tremendous crowd comes here.
01:01:26So looking for
01:01:28Coulthard, Barrichello,
01:01:30Alessi and Jarno Trulli.
01:01:34And the minorities, Mika Salo
01:01:36as well.
01:01:38So Hakkinen leads, Coulthard is second,
01:01:40Klein comes back on track in third.
01:01:42Barrichello now
01:01:44posted fourth.
01:01:46Alessi,
01:01:48Fisichella,
01:01:50Damon Hill, Alex Virts,
01:01:52Johnny Herbert.
01:01:56So interesting that
01:01:58they're basically all stopping on the soft compound
01:02:00tyres at the same time as the
01:02:02super soft. Doesn't seem to
01:02:04be too much of an advantage.
01:02:06But then we do see the
01:02:08penitence higher up there than I think we normally
01:02:10would have done.
01:02:12As we said earlier, they did a lot of
01:02:14aerodynamic changes to their cars
01:02:16and
01:02:18that two weeks of testing. Testing
01:02:20is continual in
01:02:22Formula 1, unlike other formulas
01:02:24and other types of racing where
01:02:26the rules are fixed
01:02:28for the season.
01:02:30I think it was
01:02:32someone from Stewart who said, if you're not in the
01:02:34wind tunnel between
01:02:36races, and Stewart had been in 30 days
01:02:38this year already, if you're not
01:02:40there, you're falling behind. If you're not
01:02:42continually developing your car, you are
01:02:44falling behind because nothing stands still
01:02:46in Formula 1. Certainly doesn't.
01:02:48But when you consider that reputedly
01:02:50McLarens have a budget of
01:02:52285 million. Alessi's in the pits,
01:02:54McLaren have a budget of
01:02:56285 million dollars a year, and Ferrari
01:02:58have a budget of only 240 million.
01:03:00Look at the brake dust coming off.
01:03:02Oh look, Alexander.
01:03:04Was that Wirtz? Fizzy. It was Fizzy having
01:03:06a moment. I didn't quite catch the helmet.
01:03:08He really got it out of shape coming
01:03:10out of the last one. He's all lazy coming out of the pits.
01:03:14See him work those new tyres
01:03:16trying to get a little heat. They slide a bit before they get a little
01:03:18heat in them.
01:03:20It seems McLaren are getting ready too.
01:03:22Here we go. He obviously got out in the marbles
01:03:24and it was pretty nasty out there.
01:03:26It was Alexander
01:03:28Wirtz. It's Wirtz, yep.
01:03:30He did get out. I thought I caught a glimpse of those
01:03:32black vertical stripes. Alexander.
01:03:34Oh, he's a very lucky boy.
01:03:36People have been complaining so much about
01:03:38the tyres. The problem is, I'm sure you appreciate,
01:03:40is that they have to run a very
01:03:42very, they run these grooves
01:03:44as David Courtauld comes in his stop.
01:03:46You see the grooves in the tyres as they go to replace
01:03:48them. Now, to allow them to run with
01:03:50less rubber on the road, in other words less tread,
01:03:52they have to have a harder compound for
01:03:54the wear. And this of course means that the car
01:03:56does slide around more. And of course
01:03:58at the same time, British is the only manufacturer
01:04:00out there, because Goodyear pulled out last year.
01:04:02Alright, Coulthard came in with 8, or rather
01:04:0416 seconds on Eddie Irvine.
01:04:06Let's see if he can beat Eddie Irvine
01:04:08down to corner 1.
01:04:10Gets to the end line, now begins to pick
01:04:12up speed. And
01:04:14did not. Eddie goes past, and here comes
01:04:16Coulthard, zipping right out in front
01:04:18of, that's Fisichella. Yes, that was
01:04:20a very good move there, because that's just what
01:04:22he needed. Because he had been behind
01:04:24Heinz Auerfrenzen as well. That was a very good
01:04:26piece of work.
01:04:28And this shows you what happened, because Fisichella
01:04:30has dropped, uh, sort of quite
01:04:32a lot of time to the Jordan behind him.
01:04:34Hence the Jordans right with him.
01:04:36And that is
01:04:40Frenzen, who now finds himself down the order
01:04:42in 6th place. Yeah, remember
01:04:44of course, Barry Kello hasn't been
01:04:46in for fuel and tyres yet.
01:04:50Well, could the stewards be on a
01:04:52one-stopper? Is that possible? Well, it is
01:04:54certainly possible. Remember, they're the team at the beginning of the year that kept
01:04:56coming in and having more stops than anybody
01:04:58else. It's quite a strong wind blowing,
01:05:00do you see that? And that must be blowing the sand around
01:05:02a lot.
01:05:04A look at the pit stops.
01:05:06Coulthard and Hocken and all
01:05:08in the early 7-second range. Eddie Irvine
01:05:10behind 8.3 for Irvine.
01:05:12But we all know that it's not just the pit stop
01:05:14time that matters, it's the time from when they leave
01:05:16the track until when they emerge
01:05:18back on it again that matters. And of course
01:05:20we all know that Schumacher was a star of that
01:05:22as Zonta's coming in for a stop.
01:05:24Something he's not
01:05:26too happy with. It looks like they might have been
01:05:28doing something to it as well.
01:05:30That's his second stop. Yeah, it is his
01:05:32second stop, but he might have been doing some adjustment.
01:05:34He was in just four laps
01:05:36ago.
01:05:46Working traffic
01:05:48as the Arrows moves aside.
01:05:5043 laps
01:05:52and a pit stop remain.
01:05:58Mika Hakkinen
01:06:00hasn't had such an easy run for a long
01:06:02time. And I wonder what Ferrari
01:06:04are going to do about mounting some form of a challenge
01:06:06and I can't see much coming at the moment, that's for certain.
01:06:08And Coulthard, a very quick
01:06:10stop by the McLaren crew
01:06:12getting Coulthard up into second place.
01:06:14So Irvine
01:06:16now third after the stop.
01:06:18Barrichello fourth
01:06:20has not stopped.
01:06:22Or rather third, I'm sorry, third
01:06:24Barrichello posted.
01:06:26Waiting for him to be third.
01:06:28Waiting for him to make his stop. Coulthard is fourth.
01:06:30I'm sorry, you're right. It's very difficult
01:06:32to figure out what it is because we have one lot
01:06:34of figures here telling us
01:06:36of his timing and scoring
01:06:38what's happening and sometimes a little
01:06:40delayed. Yeah, hadn't quite been updated.
01:06:42Coulthard was third when he went
01:06:44into the pits and comes
01:06:46back fourth.
01:06:48Yes, there's no way he's going to make that deficit up on
01:06:50Eddie just with the seven second stop.
01:06:54Now it's going to be interesting to see just what the deal is with
01:06:56both the Fords having not made a stop at this time.
01:06:58Remember next year we might not see
01:07:00the white Ford out there. We may well see
01:07:02a Jaguar. I think it's a great pity. I think
01:07:04they should, Fords do need
01:07:06I think that image of the Ford
01:07:08out there. They've now bought the team
01:07:10and think they'd want to retain it for a little bit longer.
01:07:12Everybody says there's going to be a green Jaguar
01:07:14looking car out there.
01:07:16Yeah, that's a strange bit of marketing to
01:07:18take the huge amount of resources
01:07:20required to run in Formula One and allocate it
01:07:22just to one brand rather
01:07:24than across the entire Blue Oval
01:07:26Empire of Ford.
01:07:28But that is their choice and we'll see British
01:07:30Racing Green return to Formula One next year.
01:07:32Zonta giving
01:07:34McLaren and David Coulthard plenty
01:07:36of room.
01:07:38He gets a bit out of shape himself as he goes
01:07:40in.
01:07:42So it's
01:07:44Mika Häkkinen, 20.9 seconds
01:07:46up on Eddie Irvine. Rubens Barrichello,
01:07:48David Coulthard, Giancarlo Fisichella
01:07:50and Heinz-Harald Frenzen.
01:07:52You're watching Formula One on Fox
01:07:54Sportsnet.
01:07:58Welcome back to the Hungaroring
01:08:00where Johnny Herbert and
01:08:02Olivier Penny
01:08:04are both in for pit stops.
01:08:06First of the day for
01:08:08Herbert.
01:08:10Running the Ford Series 3 engine.
01:08:12Good gas mileage and whoa!
01:08:14Does not get out
01:08:16before the Prost. That will
01:08:18sicken him. That is for sure. Slow stop.
01:08:2011.7 but remember he's only
01:08:22stopping once. It's a one-stopper
01:08:24strategy on the Ford.
01:08:26They get much better fuel mileage now. They've done a lot of work
01:08:28on this engine. It does about 3.2
01:08:30miles to the gallon. Doesn't
01:08:32seem much to all of us but it's very good in
01:08:34racing terms.
01:08:36Interesting, Derek, that they run
01:08:38unleaded pump gas
01:08:40just like you can buy at any
01:08:42gas station. Unlike most racing
01:08:44formula in the United States runs higher octane
01:08:46fuel. Look at this drag race.
01:08:48Herbert gets going quick first but of course
01:08:50Penny is just in front of him.
01:08:52It could have been a nose job but it
01:08:54wasn't. Very sensible bit of driving there by Johnny
01:08:56who had a great
01:08:58drive in the last race.
01:09:00So the only drivers
01:09:02who have yet to pit are
01:09:04Barrichello and Mika
01:09:06Salo. Salo
01:09:08under attack by race leader
01:09:10Mika Hockenan.
01:09:12Jacques Villeneuve's been lapped.
01:09:14So it's Hockenan, Irvine
01:09:16on Ferrari.
01:09:18Some 17 seconds back. Barrichello
01:09:20in third. David Coulthard
01:09:22fourth.
01:09:24Giancarlo Fisichella fifth.
01:09:26Robinson and Heitz, Harold Frentzen
01:09:28sixth for Jordan.
01:09:30Damon Hill
01:09:32in seventh. John Lacey is eighth.
01:09:34Alexander Wirtz is ninth and Jarno Trulli
01:09:36is tenth.
01:09:38And Stewart is laying out
01:09:40for Barrichello
01:09:42who will give up third place
01:09:44and may fall as far as
01:09:46to eighth when he exits the pit.
01:09:48I think it's
01:09:50that long lens there, Derek, from turn
01:09:52one that makes them look so slow
01:09:54coming down the pit lane.
01:09:58Let's just see if it's the same sort
01:10:00of length as Johnny's was.
01:10:04Falls did run mid-season so terribly
01:10:06well, although it's still mid-season now,
01:10:08but the last three races they haven't done at all
01:10:10well. They've had three non-finishes, so
01:10:12it's the same time sort of pit stop as Johnny
01:10:14had, so they are filling the car
01:10:16right up with fuel.
01:10:20Barrichello ran 39 laps
01:10:22on that first tank. He'll have to go 38
01:10:24on this one to go
01:10:26the distance. So he'll drop well
01:10:28down the order, but when the rest of the
01:10:30leaders cycle through for their second stop
01:10:32of the day, that should elevate him.
01:10:34Of course, they do say that
01:10:36he's already signed a letter
01:10:38of intent with Ferrari to drive
01:10:40for them next year, which will be
01:10:42unbelievably good for him. I'm not sure if his
01:10:44temperament will not clash somewhat with Michael
01:10:46Schumacher during the year,
01:10:48particularly when he finds himself running as number two,
01:10:50which he would inevitably be, but I don't believe
01:10:52there's ever been a Brazilian driving
01:10:54for Ferrari before, certainly not
01:10:56in a long time, so it's very special
01:10:58for him within his own country.
01:11:00And there is something very special, of course,
01:11:02about driving for Ferrari anyway.
01:11:04Well, Jackie Stewart
01:11:06was really trying to convince Barrichello
01:11:08to stay. They have Herbert signed
01:11:10to what a Stewart spokesman
01:11:12said was a two-year deal, although that
01:11:14second year may be an option for Johnny Herbert.
01:11:16And
01:11:18Paul Stewart said this weekend they were trying to convince
01:11:20Barrichello to stay on board, because
01:11:22certainly this team's fortunes have really
01:11:24improved this season over last.
01:11:26Well, you know, if they have got
01:11:28Freddie Irvine next year,
01:11:30they would certainly have two star drivers in
01:11:32Irvine and Barrichello for next, and I'm sure
01:11:34Johnny Herbert, the option is not
01:11:36on his side, I'm sure it's on Stewart's side.
01:11:42So Barrichello is the last of the leaders to
01:11:44pit. And we find
01:11:46Haakonen now with a 17-second lead
01:11:48last time by over Irvine,
01:11:50and now David Coulthard
01:11:52comes up the order to third.
01:11:54And of the entire field,
01:11:56only Mika Salo
01:11:58yet to make a pit stop.
01:12:00The attrition
01:12:02has been very light.
01:12:04Alex Zanardi with differential trouble,
01:12:06Pedro Diniz spun and
01:12:08stalled, and now Tora Takagi
01:12:10is out of race with
01:12:12gearbox trouble.
01:12:14I think while we're
01:12:16just having a quiet moment here, one should mention
01:12:18although we talked about Michael Schumacher
01:12:20earlier, he did have some
01:12:22hardware removed in his tibia to speed up
01:12:24the healing process just last week.
01:12:26And of course they're anticipating trying to
01:12:28get back for September the 12th. In fact, what is
01:12:30the biggest problem has been that he cut his right
01:12:32heel, and that restricts his mobility,
01:12:34and of course the feeling in his
01:12:36foot. So that is really one of the
01:12:38reasons he has actually been
01:12:40good move there, to allow
01:12:42Eddie go through. But that's really been
01:12:44Michael's main problem, cannot get his weight on the foot,
01:12:46and of course you do need feeling in the heel of your foot,
01:12:48that is for sure. When Riccardo
01:12:50Zonta was out, wanted to come back, and
01:12:52after Sid Watkins made him jump up and down
01:12:54on his injured leg to see if he was fit enough
01:12:56to climb in and out of the car, and it hurt him
01:12:58too much. He had to sit out another
01:13:00race before he was allowed
01:13:02to come back. Well exactly Mike, they have to
01:13:04be able to get out of the car in 5 seconds
01:13:06and then replace the steering wheel, otherwise
01:13:08you just can't do it. So
01:13:10you know, it's quite a tall order, particularly when your leg
01:13:12has had a clean break on it. But the damage to his
01:13:14heel has been the reason that Schumacher probably
01:13:16hasn't been doing the rehabilitation
01:13:18he'd wanted to. I believe he did want
01:13:20to rest, and then they decided they would
01:13:22the doctors convinced Michael to wait at least another
01:13:24week, as Peter told us earlier.
01:13:26The gap second to third,
01:13:282 seconds, there they are, the Ferrari of Irvine,
01:13:30the McLaren of
01:13:32Coulthard. While the gap from
01:13:34first to second, from Mika Hakkinen back to
01:13:36Eddie Irvine, is now at 19
01:13:38seconds. There is an
01:13:40almighty amount of needle between
01:13:42Irvine and Coulthard. Whenever Eddie says something
01:13:44about Coulthard, Coulthard
01:13:46responds. He says that
01:13:48David is a real fitness freak. You can see how fit
01:13:50he looks. Tremendously fit man.
01:13:52And he says that Eddie's a bit of a playboy.
01:13:54Oh, don't carve in on him. That's it,
01:13:56lets him through, because he must have lost some time there
01:13:58behind that Prost.
01:14:00Eddie, in fact, between the races
01:14:02he and Hakkinen went on
01:14:04vacation, between the last two races.
01:14:06Hakkinen went to Sardinia on a boat, and
01:14:08Eddie went to Saint-Tropez on his boat. Can you imagine
01:14:10going to Saint-Tropez? He said that he
01:14:12spent most of his day and night in bed.
01:14:14I don't know what that implies,
01:14:16but certainly it must imply he needed
01:14:18a lot of rest. Perhaps.
01:14:22Well, you see, Coulthard is closed right up now
01:14:24on Eddie Irvine. Works the
01:14:26traffic.
01:14:28And it's down to a second and a half
01:14:30between those
01:14:32two. The pit boards back out again for
01:14:34Mika Hakkinen, again telling him to push.
01:14:36They want Hakkinen to open up a greater
01:14:38advantage. It now stands at 20.5
01:14:40seconds before he makes his
01:14:42second stop. Well, that
01:14:44means he would go into the pits for his second
01:14:46stop and come out still in the lead,
01:14:48which would be amazing.
01:14:50Even though Irvine hadn't
01:14:52pitted.
01:14:54Fizzicato was able to come back on track
01:14:56ahead of Heinz-Harald Frensen.
01:14:58So Fizzi is fourth.
01:15:00Frensen fifth. Damon Hill,
01:15:02who has scored at least
01:15:04a point in every appearance here,
01:15:06is poised to do so again today. Hill is
01:15:08sixth. John Lacey is
01:15:10seventh. Barrichello
01:15:12did fall all the way to eighth
01:15:14with his pit stop. Alexander
01:15:16Wurz is ninth, and Jarno Trulli
01:15:18is tenth.
01:15:20Now Mika Salo
01:15:22is a lap
01:15:24and 19 seconds back. He has
01:15:26yet to make his stop, and now Ferrari
01:15:28is set up for Salo
01:15:30to finally make his pit stop at
01:15:32lap 44.
01:15:34David Coulthard is very close to Eddie.
01:15:36For David to overtake
01:15:38Eddie Irvine is not going to be easy.
01:15:40For anybody here, but
01:15:42it would be a mighty move if
01:15:44DC was to pass Eddie Irvine.
01:15:46And it would be completely demoralizing
01:15:48for Ferrari, who is having
01:15:50an up-and-down day.
01:15:52Eddie's trying to pinch himself down inside
01:15:54the Minardi there, and he does just
01:15:56get down inside. A very good
01:15:58bit of moving there as
01:16:00Jeunet pulls over to let him by,
01:16:02but made it tight for him, as he did for Hakanen
01:16:04some laps ago.
01:16:06You know, actually, the lap traffic
01:16:08here, Derek, has been quite considerate today.
01:16:10You know, I mean, the drivers have done
01:16:12a very good job of not holding up the
01:16:14faster cars, it appears. Yes, they have been very
01:16:16good so far.
01:16:18Now here's DC
01:16:20closing right back up on Irvine again.
01:16:22They have fallen
01:16:2422 seconds back of Mika Hakanen.
01:16:26So Mika Salo is in.
01:16:28That is the final
01:16:30driver to pit
01:16:32lap 44.
01:16:39Imagine having
01:16:4174 starts in Formula 1, your best was
01:16:43only second, and that was last week.
01:16:45But you do have to be in the best car.
01:16:47He's in it today, and it's not working for him, but I think
01:16:49it really gets down to fact, as everybody
01:16:51said, and we said before,
01:16:53you need to have so much confidence in your car
01:16:55on the circuit to just chuck it at the corners.
01:16:57Look at these two, Irvine
01:16:59and Coulthard. No distance between
01:17:01them at all.
01:17:09On their
01:17:11second pit stop, Derek,
01:17:13can you give the edge to either crew?
01:17:15I mean, could either driver, could Coulthard
01:17:17be waiting to hope his team can get
01:17:19him out ahead of Irvine? Certainly
01:17:21if there's an opportunity, he'll take advantage of it here.
01:17:23But do you rate either crew
01:17:25higher than the other? Not at the moment.
01:17:27I think Ferrari certainly were
01:17:29superior, but McLaren
01:17:31have got it all together, and I think that the
01:17:33incident they had at Hockenheim with the
01:17:35refueling on Mika's car and other
01:17:37situations this year, Irvine really
01:17:39getting ragged there over the dirt.
01:17:41I think it puts them both on a par.
01:17:45But you have to admit the Ferrari does,
01:17:47sorry, the McLaren does look the better car today.
01:17:51This is where Eddie might give up a bit.
01:17:53The Ferrari has
01:17:55a much better rev band, a much
01:17:57easier way to drive, a much more
01:17:59acceptable rev band. The McLaren
01:18:01has a slightly peakier rev band.
01:18:03And so the Ferrari
01:18:05really is a more drivable engine, but
01:18:07the McLaren just has that better stability.
01:18:11So Mika Hockenheim leads from Eddie Irvine now
01:18:13by 23 seconds, with David Coulthard
01:18:15a close third, Isabella fourth,
01:18:17Frentzen fifth, and Damon Hill
01:18:19sixth. You're watching Formula One
01:18:21on Fox Sports Net.
01:18:25Welcome back to the
01:18:27Hungaroring, 47 laps complete, and
01:18:29Damon Hill is in for his second stop
01:18:31of the day, putting scuffed tires
01:18:33on the Jordan.
01:18:35And Hill, who has won here twice and scored
01:18:37in the points in every appearance
01:18:39in this race,
01:18:41surrenders sixth place
01:18:43and comes back out
01:18:45in tenth, I believe, behind Alexander Virts.
01:18:49Now this battle continues to rage
01:18:51on, Coulthard and Irvine,
01:18:53and there's got to be a lot of calculating
01:18:55going on in those two pits.
01:18:57Eddie Irvine and Derek stopped at lap
01:18:5928, that I would think would
01:19:01certainly have to stop again.
01:19:03Mika Salo went 44
01:19:05laps. Now David Coulthard
01:19:07stopped on lap 32. If he's
01:19:09getting as good a gas mileage as Salo,
01:19:11he'd be a lap shy
01:19:13of going the distance without a pit stop.
01:19:15So, I wonder
01:19:17where it stands and whether or not Coulthard
01:19:19would have to pit, but it seems that Eddie Irvine
01:19:21would absolutely have to stop. Well I'm sure he will
01:19:23also, his pit stop wasn't very long.
01:19:25So therefore
01:19:27I don't think he took on a full, you know,
01:19:29filled the tank right up.
01:19:31I think it would have been a 10 or 11 second stop.
01:19:33Mm-hmm. Agreed.
01:19:35Well, Mika Haakonen is our leader now by
01:19:3728 seconds ahead of this battle.
01:19:39Eddie Irvine's Ferrari against David Coulthard's
01:19:41McLaren. Giancarlo Fisichella
01:19:43hides Harold Frenson.
01:19:45Jean Alesi moves up into 6th.
01:19:47Barrichello, Virts,
01:19:49Damon Hill, the top 10.
01:19:53We've gotten a lot of e-mail about
01:19:55international colors that used to be prevalent
01:19:57in Formula 1. Italian racing red for the Ferraris.
01:19:59British racing green next year
01:20:01for the Jaguar team. French racing blue
01:20:03for the Prost. The American official
01:20:05colors were originally white
01:20:07with a blue frame, and then when the cars
01:20:09became a little more enclosed, white with a blue
01:20:11stripe. And there's been a lot of questions
01:20:13about the German national color.
01:20:15It was originally white.
01:20:17Mercedes,
01:20:19a very popularized or very well-publicized
01:20:21move at the time, back in the
01:20:2330s, took the paint off their car to save weight,
01:20:25raced it as silver.
01:20:27That's the silver arrows, but
01:20:29over the years, Derek, I recall
01:20:31German cars racing in white or
01:20:33silver before the advent of sponsored
01:20:35theme paint jobs.
01:20:37And if you look at the sales figures,
01:20:39Bob Carlson of Porsche tells me that
01:20:41more Porsches are ordered in silver by far
01:20:43than any other color, and it seems
01:20:45Mercedes as well. So,
01:20:47as to whether the official color of Germany
01:20:49is white or silver, I guess that's
01:20:51open to some debate. But I think the silver,
01:20:53I mean, I know the same with Audi, they're all, they look
01:20:55so good in silver, and I think that's
01:20:57the real reason. I don't think it's to do with national colors.
01:20:59Here comes Frentzen in for a stop.
01:21:01So, Heinz-Harald Frentzen is
01:21:03fifth.
01:21:07Jump to the inside there.
01:21:11Aren't the boys being polite out there
01:21:13today? I can't quite believe it.
01:21:19Good stop by them.
01:21:23On the rev limiter all the way down, then he releases it.
01:21:25Look at this group, my goodness, he's glad he got it in front
01:21:27of them. They're like just in front
01:21:29of Zonta.
01:21:33And now Prost is setting up the pit as well.
01:21:35Here we revisit the second place battle
01:21:37and still David Coulthard to hold station
01:21:39just about half a second
01:21:41back of Eddie Irvine.
01:21:46So, a lot of pit stops here at lap
01:21:4851, with Frentzen in
01:21:50for his second of the day.
01:21:52And now at Prost, Jarno Trulli
01:21:56for his second stop.
01:22:02And Trulli gave up
01:22:04tenth place.
01:22:06Jacques Villeneuve is in. He's racing
01:22:08in twelfth position for
01:22:10BAR.
01:22:12And BAR may actually
01:22:14get their first and second
01:22:16finishes of the season today.
01:22:18Don't say that, Mike.
01:22:20They haven't scored a point.
01:22:22Nonetheless, it'd be love to see them get some
01:22:24good finishes.
01:22:26I believe, of course, it was Mika Salo when he stood in
01:22:28for Zonta after his accident.
01:22:30It would be the first finish for Villeneuve.
01:22:32Damon having a moment, getting out there a little bit too
01:22:34wide, gets back on the road, doesn't lose too
01:22:36much time, doesn't lose any body work, which is more
01:22:38to the point. These cars do
01:22:40sort of surf right on their
01:22:42wooden bottom, as they say, all the way
01:22:44through the sand, or the shingle,
01:22:46or whatever it is that material is on that
01:22:48particular bed.
01:22:52Alexander Burtz has just popped in.
01:22:54There's been a lot of discussion about
01:22:56these run-off areas, the gravel.
01:22:58Let's see how quick Alexander's
01:23:00in. But it still gets down to the fact
01:23:02that gravel is the best
01:23:04way of slowing a car down when it is
01:23:06spinning or when it's sideways.
01:23:08But we did see Mika Hakkinen and, of course,
01:23:10Michael Schumacher have rather nasty crashes,
01:23:12going straight in. There's nothing you can do much about that.
01:23:14Apart from having
01:23:16one of those wires that they have on the aircraft
01:23:18carriers. Yeah, an arrest hook.
01:23:20You see, you can't
01:23:22really have wires. Somebody suggested you should have
01:23:24wires, maybe that would arrest the cars, but of course
01:23:26what happens if the guy goes upside down?
01:23:28He'd whip his head off, so that isn't very convenient.
01:23:30Or what happens if the wire would
01:23:32fling the car back at the circuit? Here's Ralf
01:23:34Schumacher. The one remaining Williams,
01:23:36of course, in the race.
01:23:38Hitting it lap 52. Ralf up in
01:23:4011th place. He started well down. Remember, of course,
01:23:42that Zanardi's out.
01:23:44So Frank Williams said before the race,
01:23:46one of the qualifying sessions I'd rather forget.
01:23:48And a Williams
01:23:50driver has been on the podium in every
01:23:52one of the last ten Grand Prix's here, and that
01:23:54streak's likely to be broken today. Yeah, and
01:23:56Frank Williams is going to Chicago
01:23:58to see a kart race, and then he's
01:24:00going to go to Indianapolis.
01:24:02Probably to have a chat with Montoya, I suspect.
01:24:04Perhaps.
01:24:06To check out the Indy track, which should be interesting
01:24:08to see what he thinks of that.
01:24:10Here's Fisichello.
01:24:16And he gives up 4th place.
01:24:18He's been having a
01:24:20superb drive today.
01:24:22Doing some very good lap times as well.
01:24:2421.4. Very quick
01:24:26times. Oh dear, what have
01:24:28they got? A problem.
01:24:30Looking
01:24:32underneath the car, and
01:24:34can he not select a gear?
01:24:36They're looking at the front as well, for some reason.
01:24:38I don't understand that.
01:24:40He was running so well.
01:24:42He had such a good race. It's really what
01:24:44Benetton needed.
01:24:46So he's alright now.
01:24:48Something electronic. You see, he's got
01:24:50I think...
01:24:52No, he's still got a problem.
01:24:54He's got a little
01:24:56computer in his hand, and he's trying to
01:24:58diagnose what the problem is.
01:25:02That's the old trouble with this electronic
01:25:04stuff. When it goes wrong, you
01:25:06get really left in the mire.
01:25:08That's right. There's no adjustability
01:25:10to the electronics on these cars. They work or they don't.
01:25:12He will be so
01:25:14frustrated. He was doing an excellent
01:25:16job. What an inspired job today.
01:25:22Meanwhile, Mika Hakkarinen, who has
01:25:24led nearly this entire race, Fisichello
01:25:26climbing out.
01:25:28Oh, what a horrible break for Benetton.
01:25:30After really improving their fortunes in
01:25:32qualifying and their running of the race.
01:25:36First to second place
01:25:38now. 31.3
01:25:40seconds.
01:25:42Hakkarinen from Irvine.
01:25:44And Mika Hakkarinen
01:25:46really opening the gap prior to
01:25:48his second stop, so that he should
01:25:50handily be able to
01:25:52make the second stop without losing the lead.
01:25:54It's all
01:25:56but a certainty that Eddie Irvine will have to
01:25:58stop again, and it is
01:26:00a question mark on David Coulthard.
01:26:02Yes,
01:26:04it's strange that
01:26:06David is so close behind Eddie, but at the same
01:26:08time, I guess he's trying to bother him to go into a mistake
01:26:10because if David is
01:26:12not going for another stop, then why push him
01:26:14so hard? But at the same time, it might make
01:26:16Eddie make an error, so that's probably why he's doing
01:26:18it. Well, it's almost
01:26:20Derek, as if you flip the coin from last
01:26:22week, and instead of coming up Ferrari, it's
01:26:24come up McLaren. The fortunes are almost
01:26:26exactly reversed.
01:26:28Two weeks ago, Coulthard
01:26:30ran in the back of Mika Salo, had to stop for
01:26:32a nose cone, then for a penalty, was
01:26:34pretty much out of the race. Here, let's ride with Jean Alési
01:26:36as he comes
01:26:38in, and McLaren
01:26:40is also, you see, setting up as Alési
01:26:42will go past them.
01:26:50A great drive by Jean Alési today, let's face
01:26:52it. He's in fourth place,
01:26:54doing a super job.
01:26:56Inherited somewhat by
01:26:58Keller pulling out, or stopping, should I say.
01:27:00Great job.
01:27:02Lap 54.
01:27:04Oh, what is happening here? What has taken their
01:27:06problem?
01:27:08And the leader's in. Mika Hakkinen's
01:27:10in.
01:27:12Alési's got it going, thank goodness for that, but he
01:27:14he's having a job getting the right gears, that's for
01:27:16sure. You must be so frustrated.
01:27:18Hakkinen, this has got to be an immaculate stop
01:27:20by these McLaren guys. Vital, the last stop for
01:27:22him of the race. Super stop, seven
01:27:24odd seconds. Good stuff.
01:27:26Very good.
01:27:28He stops at lap 54.
01:27:30So he ran a very
01:27:32short stint.
01:27:34Same time as his first pit, so either
01:27:36or neither with a full load of fuel.
01:27:40Comes back out behind the
01:27:42arrows of de la Rosa. And you can see Irvine
01:27:44and Coulthard coming
01:27:46onto the pit straight as Mika came into
01:27:48turn one.
01:27:50Not easy for Mika, really.
01:27:52He's got to drive immaculately, can't
01:27:54go wrong at the same time, he's got to get by these
01:27:56tail-enders, or should I say the slower
01:27:58cars, which haven't made it difficult for him,
01:28:00but you've got to be so neat here, and it's not exactly
01:28:02like coming straight into a corner, braking, pointing
01:28:04the car, driving it through. Here
01:28:06you're coming into the corner
01:28:08and braking as you're
01:28:10turning in, powering on, and
01:28:12sliding the car around much more than you normally do.
01:28:14And if you back right off of it to conserve anything, you're
01:28:16going to lose a lot of time, and he doesn't want to do
01:28:18that, so he has to drive hard all the time.
01:28:20And the tires
01:28:22that came off that car, Peter
01:28:24Windsor tells us from pit lane,
01:28:26were in great shape.
01:28:28So, as I said,
01:28:30everything is going McLaren's
01:28:32way today, in sharp contrast
01:28:34to two weeks ago.
01:28:36There the car is out of race,
01:28:38there's Akela, Takagi, Denis, and Zanardi.
01:28:40Of course, just a few weeks...
01:28:42Oh! What happened there? Oh, he kept well out
01:28:44of his way. A few weeks ago
01:28:46the title was... the phrase
01:28:48was, the World Championship was for McLaren
01:28:50to lose and Ferrari to win.
01:28:52It's almost turned around in the last two weeks
01:28:54that it's Ferraris to lose and McLaren to win. Here we have McLaren
01:28:56getting back on top. However,
01:28:58Irvine will be collecting useful points
01:29:00and could well remain in the lead of the championship.
01:29:05So Mika Hakkinen leads Eddie Irvine,
01:29:07David Coulthard, Heinz-Harald
01:29:09Frentzen, Barrichello,
01:29:11and Damon Hill, with 56
01:29:13of 77 laps completed
01:29:15in Hungary.
01:29:18Welcome back to Hungary. The second
01:29:20place battle could be decided here in pit
01:29:22lane. Irvine comes in and Coulthard
01:29:24is right behind him.
01:29:31Just a very good chance here that
01:29:33Coulthard will get out first. Eddie had that little bit further
01:29:35to go. Good start by Eddie. Has he got out?
01:29:37Yes, he has. And he's
01:29:39blocked David out.
01:29:41Oh my goodness. David obviously
01:29:43get into his pit quicker. Eddie took
01:29:45a little bit more time to weave his way through the mechanics.
01:29:47What a superb stop there, of course, by
01:29:49the two teams. Wonderful bit
01:29:51of pit work. Oh, you might have seen a
01:29:53Ferrari mechanic or two lingering
01:29:55out toward the pit lane, just in front
01:29:57of where David Coulthard came back on.
01:29:59Back onto the pit lane from
01:30:01his pit box. Just to make it a little bit
01:30:03narrow, you mean, Mike? Well, make Coulthard's
01:30:05turn just a little bit wider and take a little
01:30:07more time. Now,
01:30:09David's got to make the move when there's traffic
01:30:11around. He's got to start pushing.
01:30:13See, David is now, he's
01:30:15quite well down in the World Championship. He hasn't got too much.
01:30:17I mean, obviously, he's there. He's in fifth place
01:30:19in the World Championship, but at the same time
01:30:21he's got to
01:30:23push Eddie. He's got to push Eddie for
01:30:25his teamwork. From the constructor's point
01:30:27of view, he needs to finish third.
01:30:29But from within the team, he's got to try and get ahead
01:30:31of Eddie. He's got to push him. He's got to get
01:30:33Eddie out of the way.
01:30:35Let's have a look at it. Look at the mechanic
01:30:37on the far right of your screen.
01:30:39Nope, they were just taking up
01:30:41all the room the rule allows. They were
01:30:43still inside the dotted line.
01:30:45So, all's fair there.
01:30:49And Irvine holds off
01:30:51Coulthard through the pit stop.
01:30:53I'm surprised that McLaren did that
01:30:55stop just then. But it shows
01:30:57that they must have put such a little amount of fuel in before.
01:30:59Because I would have thought McLaren
01:31:01would have wanted him to go on a bit longer
01:31:03because he could have got some quick laps in on his own and come
01:31:05in and had that shorter splash
01:31:07of fuel towards the end.
01:31:09So Hockenden continues to lead.
01:31:11I said that wasn't
01:31:13very clever, really, in a way,
01:31:15to come in at the same time. I wouldn't think,
01:31:17especially when you're pitted right behind
01:31:19Ferrari, wouldn't you want a clear
01:31:21pit lane?
01:31:23What did it cost him? A couple of tenths?
01:31:25Well, it might have cost him the position.
01:31:27Well, exactly, because he can't
01:31:29and now David cannot benefit by the fact he's
01:31:31got to mess the tires. He never had, David
01:31:33so far has not had the chance of
01:31:35showing how quick he can be without Eddie in the way.
01:31:37Whether it be when Eddie's gone in
01:31:39and then when Eddie's just come out before
01:31:41he goes in. So, you know, he's
01:31:43lost that. I think McLaren's might have goofed a little bit.
01:31:45I agree, Derek, completely. When you pit
01:31:47the same time as Irvine and he's pitted just
01:31:49in front of you, you really lessen your
01:31:51chances of getting out ahead of
01:31:53him than if you pit on a different lap.
01:31:55If you have a quicker pit stop,
01:31:57there is that chance of beating him
01:31:59back out onto the racetrack.
01:32:01Damon Hill right up behind Rubens Barrichello
01:32:03at this point. One second just
01:32:05between them. Report from the Benetton
01:32:07pit on Fisichella is that the
01:32:09engine just lost power.
01:32:11And Fisichella
01:32:13is out of race.
01:32:19Our next telecast comes up
01:32:21Sunday, August 29th at
01:32:2310am your local time. It's the Grand Prix
01:32:25of Belgium. Damon Hill is the defending
01:32:27champion on the longest
01:32:29track on the Formula 1 circuit.
01:32:31Just look at the power. Can Eddie Irvine go
01:32:33down inside the Prost? Yes, he does. They both
01:32:35go down inside the Prost. What gentlemanly
01:32:37maneuvering out there. There must have been a lot of talking
01:32:39at the drivers' meeting before the start of this race
01:32:41to make people really be observant
01:32:43of their mirrors. That was Jarno Trulli moving
01:32:45aside.
01:32:47And here a look
01:32:49at Heinz-Harald Frentzen, who is
01:32:51fourth. He is ten seconds
01:32:53behind the Irvine-
01:32:55Coulthard battle.
01:32:59He's just let Mikasa
01:33:01hence you see a red
01:33:03Ferrari right behind the Jordan.
01:33:05Salo is still lapping some couple
01:33:07of seconds off the times
01:33:09of the top drivers.
01:33:1124s as opposed to 22s.
01:33:131 minute 22s
01:33:15that is.
01:33:17Damon Hill having a very good race there with Rubens.
01:33:19I said it just now, but it's a good shot for them both.
01:33:21Damon catching him up somewhat
01:33:23under braking. I'm just going to say, well done for
01:33:25Damon Hill. Every
01:33:27Grand Prix at Hungary he has scored in the points
01:33:29and he is poised to do so again today.
01:33:31He's 15 seconds up on
01:33:33Alessi, the 7th place driver.
01:33:35Then Alexander Wurz, Jarno
01:33:37Trulli, Ralf Schumacher, Peni,
01:33:39Villeneuve, Herbert,
01:33:41Salo, Zonta, Baudouin,
01:33:43de la Rosa and Genet.
01:33:45Ooh, one of the-
01:33:47Just ahead
01:33:49and now moving off to the side.
01:33:51One of the BARs.
01:33:53He's just giving them room to go through.
01:33:55He's moving very, very slowly and he is
01:33:57coming into pit.
01:33:59Pits are ready. It looked like
01:34:01there was a big speed differential there
01:34:03and there was as the BAR
01:34:05comes pitside. Is that Jordan going to have a look?
01:34:07Look at him. He's going down the inside of Barry Kelly, but he's got to
01:34:09outbrake him. Yes, he has.
01:34:11All right, Damon. Great bit of work there, Damon.
01:34:13We haven't seen you do that for a while. That is
01:34:15great stuff.
01:34:17But of course, remember, Rubens is on a
01:34:19one-stop strategy for the race
01:34:21and that means that his tyres will-
01:34:23could well be going away by now.
01:34:25So now both the BAR
01:34:27cars- it was Villeneuve that we saw. He is in
01:34:29and Zonta is also
01:34:33in.
01:34:35As Villeneuve pulls away.
01:34:43I think this is
01:34:45Zonta's third stop. He stopped at lap 29
01:34:47and 33 and now comes
01:34:49in at lap 61.
01:34:56And it was also the third-
01:34:58there is Villeneuve. He is already gone.
01:35:00He is gone from the race.
01:35:02He came in and I'm sorry for
01:35:04our vantage point. Couldn't see him pull to the garage.
01:35:09Goes atop the pit box.
01:35:11Still no finishes for him this year.
01:35:13Unbelievable.
01:35:15Unbelievable. He's talked about moving on
01:35:17at the end of next year. He has another
01:35:19year to go this contract with BAR. I find that very
01:35:21hard to take when you consider that really
01:35:23the team was formed around him.
01:35:25There has been a lot of aggro in the team and as we
01:35:27said at the beginning of the program,
01:35:29they have in fact
01:35:31had an injection of money- further money
01:35:33from the sponsors, British American
01:35:35Tobacco, into the BAR
01:35:37team. Villeneuve
01:35:39a winner here in 96 and 97.
01:35:41Third last year
01:35:43and this year out of race.
01:35:45Oh look!
01:35:47Eddie's on the road. Is that Eddie?
01:35:49Eddie just lost second place.
01:35:51Oh dear,
01:35:53oh dear. Just what he didn't want to do but just
01:35:55what David Coulthard wanted him to do. Let's watch him
01:35:57as he comes into the corner.
01:35:59He turns in, gets the tail out. Can't get
01:36:01back in on the line and that's it. You saw the tail
01:36:03go out as he starts to brake. A bit too
01:36:05much braking on the rear possibly. Gets the tail
01:36:07out. Keep it going, Eddie. You just need
01:36:09those points nonetheless. But he
01:36:11was under so much pressure. Been doing some good times
01:36:13lapping in the 1.21s to 1.21
01:36:15zeros.
01:36:17But there's David Coulthard up into second place.
01:36:19Good bit of pressure from David Coulthard.
01:36:23So a tough break for Eddie Irvine and this
01:36:25has not been Ferrari's
01:36:27day. Mika Salo has been
01:36:29mired in the bottom of the running order all
01:36:31day. He's now climbed to 13th
01:36:33place largely through attrition
01:36:35and continues to lap in the 1.25
01:36:37minute 26 range
01:36:39while the leaders are
01:36:41doing 21s and 22s.
01:36:43And Eddie Irvine just slides
01:36:45off track and out of second place.
01:36:47Just shows you can never say it
01:36:49too soon. Out of curiosity
01:36:51here, McLaren have had 20 starts this
01:36:53year and had 8 retirements. Ferrari
01:36:55of course have had 19 starts, excluding
01:36:57the fact that Michael Schumacher went out on the first lap
01:36:59which wasn't counted as a start. And they've had
01:37:012 retirements. So you can see the
01:37:03attrition rate far greater in the McLaren camp
01:37:05but not today.
01:37:07Nope, today they seem to have it all together
01:37:09and just that one little slide
01:37:11has given Coulthard
01:37:13nearly a 5 second advantage
01:37:15on Eddie Irvine.
01:37:23Heinz-Harold Frentzen not close enough
01:37:25to capitalize. He was some 15 seconds
01:37:27back of Irvine
01:37:29at the time Eddie went off.
01:37:33And I wonder, we'll look
01:37:35next time by and see if Damon Hill
01:37:37is catching up Frentzen.
01:37:41There's the gap now, 4.7 seconds
01:37:43and 4.8
01:37:51So Irvine, even if he
01:37:53finishes 3rd
01:37:55and Haakonen wins, Irvine will still
01:37:57lead the World Championship but only
01:37:59by then 2 points.
01:38:01Looks like it really wagged the tail coming off that
01:38:03corner. Yeah, it really did wag it.
01:38:05The strange thing is about these tires
01:38:07you can put one set on and get perfect handling
01:38:09another one, you get a little bit
01:38:11of instability at one corner or one end
01:38:13of the car. It could be with Eddie as he
01:38:15came into that corner. It looked like obviously
01:38:17the back end didn't work quite as well for him
01:38:19where he went off that is
01:38:21and it just got a bit out of shape and it meant that
01:38:23he couldn't turn in when he wanted to and of course with these
01:38:25tires you cannot get away with it. With this
01:38:27type of tire, with a groove tire. And it's happening
01:38:29again Derrick, look at Eddie is really
01:38:31tossing the car. You see the back
01:38:33end trying to step out on the exit of
01:38:35just almost every corner that he
01:38:37is really trying hard to put
01:38:39back the distance between himself
01:38:41now and David Coulthard.
01:38:43So Mika Hakkinen
01:38:45and David Coulthard lead for McLaren
01:38:47Mercedes, then Irvine's Ferrari
01:38:49Frentzen's Jordan, Barrichello
01:38:51and Damon Hill. 13 laps
01:38:53to go in Hungary.
01:39:03Welcome back to Fox Sports coverage of the Grand
01:39:05Prix of Hungary. Mika
01:39:07Hakkinen now has
01:39:09a 21 second lead over David
01:39:11Coulthard, Eddie Irvine another now
01:39:137 seconds back and
01:39:15it's 13 seconds from Irvine back to
01:39:17Heinz-Harald Frentzen. Then it's
01:39:19Rubens Barrichello and
01:39:21Damon Hill in the points paying positions
01:39:23then John Alesi, Alexander
01:39:25Virts, Jarno Trulli and Ralf
01:39:27Schumacher are the top 10.
01:39:29Hakkinen has officially
01:39:31led every lap. 17
01:39:33of the 22 starters remain.
01:39:35Out of race, Jacques Villeneuve
01:39:37with electrical problems. The clutch
01:39:39would not, electronic clutch would not engage.
01:39:41Schakala-Fisichella, Takagi,
01:39:43Diniz and Zanardi
01:39:45are all out of the race.
01:39:47Villeneuve is still looking for his
01:39:49first finish
01:39:51of 1999.
01:39:53David Coulthard
01:39:55picked up the quickest lap there. He did just the same
01:39:57in Germany two weeks ago. Got some really
01:39:59quick laps later in the race.
01:40:01If only he gave a better start and could be there
01:40:03right at the beginning so he could really
01:40:05be there with Mika Hakkinen. He hasn't been
01:40:07doing it.
01:40:09Look at Ralf Schumacher in 10th place.
01:40:11A lap and 16 seconds
01:40:13off the lead.
01:40:17And John Alesi comes in to serve
01:40:19a 10 second penalty.
01:40:21He had been under a steward's
01:40:23inquiry.
01:40:25And now
01:40:27comes in to serve his 10 seconds.
01:40:29I think this is where his Sicilian temperament will
01:40:31really show.
01:40:33He's got it in gear.
01:40:35The graphics corrected. It took them quite a while to
01:40:37figure out that he jumped the start.
01:40:39And away he goes.
01:40:41Ruhi.
01:40:45Then off he goes. He's going to go
01:40:47just ahead
01:40:49of McLaren.
01:40:51And he will surrender
01:40:537th place to
01:40:55Alexander Wurz. He'll come out
01:40:57ahead of Jarno, truly.
01:40:59I'm sorry. The graphics mistaken.
01:41:01The penalty on Alesi is
01:41:03for speeding in the pit lane.
01:41:05I think it was after that rather long stop
01:41:07he had. And it looked to me like he
01:41:09really went off at 1,000 miles an hour.
01:41:11And that was just enough to do
01:41:13the damage.
01:41:15Looked like that to the stewards as well.
01:41:17Yeah, they picked him up on it.
01:41:19A nod to Nick Heidfeld
01:41:21who clinched the Formula 3000 championship
01:41:23yesterday here by finishing
01:41:252nd to
01:41:27Chris Harrison driving for the Prost Junior
01:41:29team. Frank Montagne
01:41:31finished 3rd.
01:41:33Of course, Heidfeld is very close
01:41:35to McLaren. He runs
01:41:37actually in their colours.
01:41:39And he's really a reserve driver.
01:41:41Part of the sort of junior team
01:41:43if you like at McLaren.
01:41:45And could well be brought into the Formula 1 team
01:41:47at any point. However, there is a possibility
01:41:49that he may well go to Jordan.
01:41:51He's certainly linked with Jordan, as is Trulli.
01:41:53Jarno Trulli. He had to get
01:41:55a certain number of points by the end of this race
01:41:57this weekend before he could be released
01:41:59from his contract with Prost to go where he
01:42:01wanted. So it may well be that he will sign
01:42:03early this week with
01:42:05Jordan. And if he does
01:42:07it's possible that Heidfeld
01:42:09could be loaned out to Prost
01:42:11for one or two years by McLaren to get him
01:42:13some needed Formula 1
01:42:15experience.
01:42:17As the silly season rumours
01:42:19continue to float around the circuit
01:42:21and will. Of course, McLaren is all
01:42:23tied up for next year.
01:42:25Both Håkonen and Coulthard will be back
01:42:27driving the Silver
01:42:29Arrows in the year 2000.
01:42:31Well, there's a talk of Dario Franchitti
01:42:33who has been with Mercedes for some years
01:42:35racing, of course, an Indy car and we know he
01:42:37won last weekend. He in fact
01:42:39is possible, a possible
01:42:41to come to McLaren in the 2001
01:42:43season. Wouldn't surprise me.
01:42:47Funny, Derek, that now we're hearing silly season
01:42:49rumours now a year and a half out.
01:42:51We're planning who's going
01:42:53where next year, not
01:42:55just in the year 2000.
01:42:59An interesting
01:43:01little figure here that's come in. Formula
01:43:031 drivers are found to suffer from repetitive
01:43:05strain injury. Nearly two-thirds
01:43:07of Formula 1 drivers seem to be suffering from this.
01:43:09It's tingling fingers and muscular pain, where
01:43:11among the more common complaints said
01:43:13in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.
01:43:15A research of 22 Formula 1 racers
01:43:17during the 1998 French Grand Prix
01:43:19found that 13 reported various
01:43:21ligaments and nerve pains.
01:43:23This is something they've got to obviously be aware of.
01:43:25This is because of the fact they're holding the steering
01:43:27wheel without and also shifting
01:43:29while they're holding it. It's sort of something to do
01:43:31with the gripping of the wheel and then shifting
01:43:33the paddles on the back of the steering wheel
01:43:35rather than removing the hand to shift on the
01:43:37old metal or the wooden gear
01:43:39lever as we knew it. Very similar to
01:43:41injuries sustained by
01:43:43our Formula 1 fans
01:43:45running their home computers and playing their video
01:43:47games. Mika Hakkinen
01:43:49at 71 laps leads David
01:43:51Coulthard by 19.5
01:43:53seconds, then Eddie Irvine, Heinz-Harald Frentzen,
01:43:55Rubens Barrichello and
01:43:57Damon Hill.
01:43:59Welcome back to the closing
01:44:01laps of the Grand Prix of Hungary.
01:44:03Heinz-Harald Frentzen
01:44:05has been doing his best to eat into
01:44:07Eddie Irvine's third place
01:44:09margin. Stands at
01:44:11about six seconds right now.
01:44:13It's McLaren, McLaren, Ferrari,
01:44:15Jordan, Stewart,
01:44:17Jordan. He did
01:44:19a super job. Did a
01:44:211 minute 20 just now on the way through.
01:44:23Slices past De La Rosa.
01:44:31Cuts it to
01:44:335.8 seconds.
01:44:35Two laps to go. Time may
01:44:37run out on Frentzen, but he's had a
01:44:39fine drive today. It's amazing how he can
01:44:41suddenly clock in a time over a second
01:44:43quicker than his previous one, and he just puts
01:44:45it in there. It's quite astonishing.
01:44:47One might say, well, why can't he do it more often?
01:44:49I'm sure Eddie Jordan will be asking that.
01:44:51But what a great drive by Mika Hakkinen.
01:44:53Immaculate drive. Hasn't
01:44:55put a foot wrong. Absolutely on the edge
01:44:57of the kerbs. Getting a little bit dirt out
01:44:59now and again, but just a superb drive.
01:45:01Not easy to drive from the front
01:45:03like that for so long.
01:45:05In the lead every lap. Yep, he's gonna wire
01:45:07this, and it's really
01:45:09redemption for McLaren and Mercedes.
01:45:11After just a
01:45:13horrible last couple of weeks,
01:45:15which included the two teammates colliding
01:45:17two races ago,
01:45:19and
01:45:21to come back here and run
01:45:23one-two will
01:45:25bring McLaren to within
01:45:27four points of Ferrari in the
01:45:29Constructors' Championship. Now there is John
01:45:31Alessi climbing out.
01:45:33And Alessi, who had
01:45:35an eighth-place finish going,
01:45:37will not complete
01:45:39the Hungarian Grand Prix.
01:45:41There's Alessi
01:45:43going backwards here with two laps to go.
01:45:45Sad for him, he was
01:45:47running so well at one stage, he was in fourth place.
01:45:49Doing a great job this weekend.
01:45:51They do have their ups and downs, that's for sure
01:45:53of that team.
01:45:55Running the Ferrari engine
01:45:57in the Saab, which of course is not the latest
01:45:59Ferrari engine.
01:46:01And Saab is the only team
01:46:03with both cars out of race.
01:46:05The attrition has been relatively
01:46:07low today.
01:46:09Final lap, I have to say that, Mike. Final lap there
01:46:11for Mika Häkkinen goes by. What a great moment
01:46:13for him, again, to pick up
01:46:15yet another victory.
01:46:19And today, especially, we've noticed
01:46:21Derek, his driving style is so
01:46:23fluid. You don't see Häkkinen
01:46:25wrestle the car much, you don't see him toss it
01:46:27around, and you don't often see that
01:46:29car out of shape.
01:46:31It's a very methodical but very fluid
01:46:33driving style that Häkkinen exhibits
01:46:35and the world champion
01:46:37is going to stand
01:46:39atop the podium
01:46:41for the fourth time this season and break
01:46:43Eddie Irvine's streak at
01:46:45two. Eddie will not three-peat.
01:46:49And Häkkinen will
01:46:51close right up on Irvine
01:46:53in the Drivers' Championship.
01:46:55He'll take away six
01:46:57points of Eddie's eight-point lead coming
01:46:59into this race. You basically
01:47:01have to say everybody in the McLaren team has
01:47:03done a good job. Even Coulthard has come through,
01:47:05pressured Eddie, pushed Eddie off the road,
01:47:07basically, or led him into a mistake.
01:47:09Allowed himself to get into second place to
01:47:11give him extra constructors' points and
01:47:13give him a boost of confidence. My goodness, how he
01:47:15needed it. Yes, that's high marks for David.
01:47:17This will be David's fourth
01:47:19second-place finish of the season
01:47:21to go along with his British Grand Prix
01:47:23win. Mika Häkkinen
01:47:25with crowds of
01:47:27Finnish fans. This is the closest Grand Prix
01:47:29to Finland. Twenty-three
01:47:31charter plane loads of Finnish
01:47:33fans, and they come to cheer Häkkinen
01:47:35to victory in the
01:47:37Hungarian Grand Prix. Yeah,
01:47:39outstanding stuff. Beautiful
01:47:41piece of work there.
01:47:43And David
01:47:45Coulthard will be coming over
01:47:47very close to him. Excellent
01:47:49piece of driving by him. Eddie Irvine must be disappointed.
01:47:51I don't think Ferrari have equipped themselves
01:47:53particularly well today. Certainly Mika Salo
01:47:55hasn't. And Frentzen is close to within
01:47:57three seconds of Irvine.
01:47:59One, perhaps two more laps,
01:48:01and third place would have changed.
01:48:03There's Irvine coming across.
01:48:05And now Frentzen
01:48:07for fourth. What a fine drive he had.
01:48:09Fine drive by Frentzen. Yet another great
01:48:11drive by him as he's had some excellent results
01:48:13this year.
01:48:15Rubens Barrichello will
01:48:17be fifth. There's Barrichello,
01:48:19and Damon Hill will complete
01:48:21his string of picking up a point in every
01:48:23Hungarian Grand Prix.
01:48:26Fox Sports
01:48:28has been brought to you by Brickstone,
01:48:30the next revolution in tires.
01:48:32Not
01:48:34since 1992, the late Ayrton
01:48:36Senna has a McLaren driver
01:48:38stood atop the victory podium in
01:48:40Hungary. Today Mika Hakkinen leads
01:48:42a McLaren 1-2 sweep, only the second
01:48:44time this season that's happened.
01:48:46Eddie Irvine scores his first Hungarian
01:48:48points. Heinz-Harald Frentzen,
01:48:50Rubens Barrichello, his best finish here,
01:48:52and Damon Hill, sixth.
01:48:55Alexander Wirtz, Jarno Trulli, Ralf Schumacher,
01:48:57Olivier Penny, Johnny Herbert,
01:48:59and Mika Salo, the top dozen.
01:49:01A high for this season.
01:49:0317 drivers classed as finishers,
01:49:05including Zonta, Badour,
01:49:07De La Rosa, Alessi, and
01:49:09Marc Genet.
01:49:11Well, the driver points are holding up Eddie Irvine
01:49:13at 56, Mika Hakkinen 54,
01:49:15Frentzen and Coulthard both on 36 and
01:49:17third, Michael Schumacher 32,
01:49:19and Ralf Schumacher, his brother, on 22.
01:49:21Ferrari came in here
01:49:23with a 16-point lead on McLaren
01:49:25Mercedes, and that's been chopped to just
01:49:27four points as McLaren picks up
01:49:29maximum points today. Jordan,
01:49:31Winfield, Benetton, and Stewart,
01:49:33the top half dozen.
01:49:35Mika Hakkinen took a
01:49:37very, very slow victory lap.
01:49:39Every other driver on the track passed him
01:49:41on his cool-off lap. He wanted to
01:49:43take his time saluting these fans,
01:49:45some 200,000 of them,
01:49:47including roughly 20,000
01:49:49from his native Finland. It's very, very
01:49:51special for him. It's the country that's closest
01:49:53to the Finnish border, so they all come to
01:49:55this race, and we're now waiting
01:49:57for Mika to come out. Here he comes,
01:49:59Ron Dennis on the right of your screen, clapping hands
01:50:01in the grey sweatshirt. He is the
01:50:03head, of course, of McLaren racing
01:50:05team, and a very special
01:50:07moment for him as well. They needed this victory,
01:50:09these two McLaren boys.
