Round 8 of the 1999 F1 season at Silverstone.
Transcript
00:00:00Great Britain have won the Formula One World Championship a total of 12 times.
00:00:08In 1996, Damon Hill became the last Englishman to win the title with eight victories along the
00:00:13way. Today, Hill fans have flocked to their home Grand Prix at Silverstone to see if the
00:00:18stories are true. That it's not only his last race on English soil, but his last race altogether.
00:00:30It's round eight of the 1999 Formula One World Championship, the British Grand Prix from fabled
00:00:56Silverstone. Hello everybody, welcome to the Toyota Pre-Race Report. I'm Chris McClure,
00:01:02sitting in for Mike Joy, alongside me Derek Bell, five-time Le Mans winner, and our man in the pits
00:01:08as usual is Peter Windsor. This is the 50th British Grand Prix and the 33rd time it's been held at
00:01:16Silverstone. As we look on board in the reconnaissance laps as they just have gotten
00:01:22underway, we're riding with Damon Hill, who perhaps is in his final Grand Prix race. The
00:01:28points coming into this eighth round of 1999, it is Mika Häkkinen at the top by a margin of eight
00:01:35over Michael Schumacher. Last year, the margin at this point of the season was 12 for Häkkinen.
00:01:41Irvine Frentzen, Ralf Schumacher, and Fisichella round out the top six. In the constructors race,
00:01:47Ferrari hasn't won in a couple of races, but they still lead McLaren by a narrowing margin.
00:01:54Jordan, a good solid third place on the list. Last time out, it was wet, it was dry, it was everything
00:02:01in France. And it was Rubens Barrichello at Manicours at the French Grand Prix that in
00:02:06fact was on pole position in the Stuart Ford. Outstanding piece of work by him in qualifying,
00:02:10but it was dry at the start. He led away from the start, Jean Alessi followed very closely,
00:02:15and then it became David Coulthard that slid through on the inside, who'd also had good
00:02:19qualifying, but David again, the gremlin struck and he was out of it. Some quick pit stops, the
00:02:23rain was coming down, Michael Schumacher's in to change onto wet tyres, and out came the pace car
00:02:28as well. From there, on the restart, it was Rubens Barrichello with a clear bit of road in front of
00:02:33him, clear vision. He took the lead, but Michael Schumacher slides down the inside to take position
00:02:38from him. But Michael has electronic problems, lots of water in, lots of electronics. He falls
00:02:43to the wayside, Mick Hacken goes by Barrichello to take the lead. But unfortunately, he had two
00:02:49pit stops to make. Their strategy wasn't quite the same as this man. Heinz-Harald Frenzen does one
00:02:54stop, and great strategy takes him in, and he wins his second Grand Prix. A great victory for this
00:03:00young man. Let's go down and hear what he has to say. And then we had time for the radio conversations
00:03:10to the pits, talking about the strategy, and I knew that I was then pretty heavy on fuel. It was pretty tight.
00:03:19A look at David Coulthard in one of his reconnaissance labs. He was second quick
00:03:23in the morning warm-up, and does have a good starting spot on the grid, no question about that.
00:03:29We're reaching the halfway point of the season, it is mid-summer. Does that mean the silly season
00:03:35is upon us? Well, let's go downstairs and ask Peter Windsor. Yes, it's that time of year again. It's
00:03:41mid-season, and question marks fill the air. Courtesy of Mr. Damon Hill, of course, because we still
00:03:46don't know exactly what he's going to do. Meanwhile, Rubens Barrichello, currently at Stewart, Eddie
00:03:51Irvine, currently at Ferrari, are looking at one another's seats. Maybe they'll end up staying where
00:03:56they are, and they'll get their retainers up. Maybe they'll actually do a swap deal. Some people believe
00:04:00those contracts have already been signed. David Coulthard, also on the market, a potential Stewart
00:04:06driver, I would say. He's got long ties with that team. Jim Keller, Fizzy Keller, meanwhile, and Heinz-Harald
00:04:11Frentzen have confirmed they will be staying where they are at Benetton and Jordan. Jean Alesi on the
00:04:17move, perhaps. Maybe he'll be driving for Prost instead of Olivier Panis, who will be switching
00:04:22to Arrows to cement Tom Walkinshaw's new deal with Supertec engines. That's also highly on the cards.
00:04:28The teams have been working very hard from the start of the year, of course, on development bits.
00:04:32Things take time. They need to be designed, they need to be manufactured, and here at Silverstone,
00:04:36we see several new mods on the car. Not all of them obvious, but new side pods are on the Williams
00:04:42and on the Stewart, and both are severely improved as a result. Final bit of news, Pedro Diniz has
00:04:48registered to take part in the New York Marathon later this year. Good luck to him, and back to you.
00:04:53Well, I just don't see how these drivers can concentrate on the rest of this season, when
00:04:57halfway through they're talking about who they're moving to for next year, as we see Michael Schumacher
00:05:01go out on one of his reconnaissance laps. Remember that they get one lap allowed round, they have to
00:05:06go down the pit lane, stop at their pit, and then carry on again. They cannot complete a lap.
00:05:10And Damon Hill out there amongst them, having gotten out of the car after a reconnaissance lap,
00:05:14Mika Hakkinen is now being slid out onto the front straightaway. Coming up next on the Toyota
00:05:20Pre-Race Report, we'll take a look at qualifying. But first, just the other night on Friday, as usual
00:05:26at a Formula One event, all the dignitaries were out for a party.
00:05:32So this is what Formula One's all about. As I said, all the dignitaries. This one held at the
00:05:38Stowe School, a public school just outside the famous corner, and Silverstone's a bumper car.
00:05:44The object there, not spill it. The object here, get another glass. We'll be back on Fox Sportsnet.
00:05:51Welcome back to our Toyota Pre-Race coverage of the Grand Prix of Great Britain. Mika Hakkinen
00:05:55climbing out of the cockpit of his McLaren race machine. They're ready to contest at Silverstone.
00:06:01It is a legendary track. It is a wonderful tractor. Yes, well, it's changed quite a bit over the years.
00:06:07Many, many different configurations from the original airfield circuit. 3.194 miles round.
00:06:12Powerful engine required. Very aerodynamic efficient and well-balanced car. We're now
00:06:16going to go and do a lap with Damon Hill. We're streaking past the pits at up to 185 miles an hour.
00:06:21Just down one gear, down to fifth. The cops, you hear him really straight back on the power again.
00:06:26The circuit is very, very smooth. He just goes across the pit exit there as he comes into the
00:06:31Beckett's complex. He's pulling 2.9 G at this point. Goes through the last part of Beckett's.
00:06:37Vital to get out of here as smooth as you can, because it leads on to the pit. The main straight
00:06:41we call hangar straight. Coming down to this Stowe corner. In fact, where Stowe school was, you saw momentarily ago.
00:06:46And down here at the bottom, he's pulling 190. Goes down one gear, pulling 2.4 G as he goes through this corner.
00:06:52A short squirt as he goes up through Vale, up to Club Corner. Harsh braking down to the slowest
00:06:58corner on the circuit. 50 miles an hour. As he comes out of there, trying to get traction. There's a lot
00:07:02of adverse camber as he comes out. Up to fourth, and then up to fifth gear as he pulls through.
00:07:08A lot of adverse camber as he comes out. Up to fourth, and then up to fifth gear as he burns his way up towards Abbey.
00:07:13Abbey was the fastest corner on the circuit. A wonderfully dangerous corner, wonderfully exciting.
00:07:18Now it's a one of these rather dubious left and right chicanes. Kars fighting to get traction as
00:07:23he comes out and works his way up towards Bridge. Flat through Bridge, keeps it to the right, not too
00:07:28far over. Then he has the complex, this new complex we call it. Prairie, Brooklands and Luffield.
00:07:34He's coming in now into Brooklands. A bit of acceleration as he goes up to a 65 mile an hour Luffield.
00:07:39The car wants to slide out. A lot, a lot of oversteer as they come out of this corner. On the right
00:07:43you'll see the pit entrance, that's where they go in. Back up through to 180 miles an hour. That was a
00:07:48lap with Damon Hill. Well he had pole here as we look at one of the Jordans up on the front straight
00:07:54away, ready to go racing. He had pole here three times in the early 1990s and he's got his best
00:07:58qualifying this year, does Damon Hill. Back in 1985, Keke Rosberg did a lap around this place
00:08:04at 160 miles an hour. That was before the changes. Lately in the mid-130 mile an hour range. Michael
00:08:10Schumacher still coming in for adjustments on his car. You saw Michael Schub, you saw Hakanen
00:08:14on the pit, on the track and you got Michael still working on his car. And qualifying yesterday,
00:08:20it was almost there for him to take away but not quite. Yes, Michael couldn't do much about it
00:08:25yesterday. In fact, there we looked down on the BRDC suite, the British Racing Drivers
00:08:30suite, a beautiful new building. It was Damon Hill that everybody was looking for and Damon was
00:08:34looking to do well at his home Grand Prix and maybe his last Grand Prix. Here he is, he actually
00:08:38went out and did get fastest time for the early part of the session. Eddie Owein then eclipsed
00:08:43him in the Ferrari. Eddie could do no more than the time that he did at this point. Did a very
00:08:48good job nonetheless. Michael Schumacher then comes out, he then gets pole position and we
00:08:52thought, oh it's going to be Ferraris dominating it again, but no. Again, Mika Hakanen comes out
00:08:56and he gets his sixth pole of the year, the 10th of his career. Excellent piece of work by Mika
00:09:00Hakanen. John Alessi meanwhile has some lurid moments trying to get the car under him but it
00:09:05gets away as usual. Also for Jarno Trulli, he had a similar problem. Same corner, same problem. Tail
00:09:11just goes out, cannot keep the car on the road. But in the Jackie Stewart pit, we had George
00:09:16Harrison, Emerson Fittipaldi talking to Dick Scammell of Cosworth Engineering. Wonder what
00:09:20they were on about. But Michael Schumacher is on the dirt trying to get pole right at the very end
00:09:24but he gets out too wide, loses time and Mika Hakanen, he's there. Boy was he happy to get pole
00:09:30position at Silverstone. Then they just took a look at each other's cars. Let's go see what
00:09:35Michael Schumacher had to say at the drivers conference. There are certain limits to the car
00:09:42and I exceeded these limits and as the times were down, I came straight in to save one lap for later
00:09:49which was a good thing because in my last run, the first lap wasn't good. I had to abort it.
00:09:56Then I tried the second lap which was quite good until the second half corner.
00:10:03After the test sessions last week at Silverstone, many people thought it was going to be very close
00:10:07between McLaren and Ferrari. It's turned out in qualifying, McLaren comfortably ahead I would say.
00:10:11Mika Hakanen on the pole, Adrian you must be very pleased. Yeah, no, he's obviously good to be on
00:10:16pole. Mika did a great job. David unfortunately not quite there. Schumacher obviously raised his
00:10:23game so David's third but not a bad starting place. No points unfortunately for qualifying,
00:10:29that's the problem. Part of the assemblage in the pit road and out onto the front straightaway,
00:10:36Irvine's car being pushed into position. He will come from outside of row number two. Over the last
00:10:41three races, Mika Hakanen has outscored Michael Schumacher 26 to 6. Mika said this week he's quite
00:10:47comfortable and thinks that he has recaptured the momentum. It's very difficult to argue with that
00:10:52notion. Yeah, it's not quite so easy to do on this day at Silverstone but there's Ralph Schumacher
00:10:58who's doing a super job this weekend and very composed and has really developed in the last year.
00:11:03Well, Formula One racing certainly is a high-tech world, well thought out,
00:11:07normally perfectly executed but occasionally a gremlin will jump up. Here's Peter. We take radio
00:11:13systems for granted in Formula One these days but if you're Michael Schumacher in the rain in the
00:11:17French Grand Prix, forget it. Water got in the electrics, he lost the mapping on the engine,
00:11:21he lost the gear change, he lost the display and he also lost his radio system. Michael
00:11:25ingeniously solved the problem by looking around the circuit at the big screens that the spectators
00:11:30were watching, waited to see when he was there, looked into the digital camera on the side of his
00:11:34cockpit and started making hand signals into that camera lens for his pit crew to read. I'm not sure
00:11:39if they got the message necessarily. Generally speaking though, most teams run their radios
00:11:43from a separate power source so that problem really would be unique to Ferrari. These days,
00:11:48very clever systems, sound straight into moulded earplugs, microphone under the nomex in the front
00:11:52of the helmet here and about 50 guys per team listen to the radio on the headset. Back to you.
00:11:59I tell you what, it's not an easy thing when you actually lose contact with your crew,
00:12:02very very difficult indeed. And there is Michael Schumacher coming out onto his position on the
00:12:06grid having done quite a lot of little changes to the car since warm-up this morning. Coming up,
00:12:11a look at Damon Hill's career. But you know, distinct colours and designs on a helmet can
00:12:15give us a feel of personality. That's the case with Ralf Schumacher. Well basically it was,
00:12:25or it is still very similar to Michael's design or we had that together and we had those colours
00:12:31to a bit simulate the German flag and it was originally it was white and then one day I
00:12:36thought okay that's too similar and then I made it yellow and bright yellow is always the advantage
00:12:40that you get seen better and divided better from other drivers so that thought ended up like that.
00:12:48The Grand Prix of Great Britain on Fox Sportsnet is brought to you by Pep Boys. Cars like us,
00:12:53people love us. And by Toyota. Every day belongs to you. Make it count. Toyota, every day.
00:13:01Harrier Jump Jet on hand a while ago to thrill the crowd. It was quite an air show leading up
00:13:06to the formation lap section of the pre-race program. The weather here at Silverstone,
00:13:12well it's not too bad. It's been pretty good all weekend long. Certainly there can be a lot of rain
00:13:17in southern England this time of year but the temperature at 75, track temperature is certainly
00:13:22not out of line. The chance of rain very low and the wind relatively low. So a perfect day to go
00:13:29Formula One racing. If you'd like to get in touch with us and comment on our work, the email
00:13:35address formula1 at foxsports.net and I guarantee each and every one of them is indeed red. Now,
00:13:43we'll be there for the rest of them all season long. The full second half of the season,
00:13:47Austria, July 25th. Then three in August at Germany, Hungary and Belgium. September, a couple
00:13:53of dates. Italy and Europe and then it's off to the Far East. October 17th at Malaysia for the
00:13:58first time and closing it out with live coverage on the 31st of October from Japan where a world
00:14:04champion may well be crowned. Bernie Ecclestone who missed a couple of races because of his heart
00:14:10bypass surgery is now back at the racetrack and enjoying himself in the sunshine at Silverstone
00:14:17most certainly. Now, is he leaving at age 39? Well, we really won't know till this race is done but
00:14:24suffice to say Damon Hill's career is special. Damon Hill was a reluctant Formula One star. His
00:14:31father Graham who won two world championships was killed in a plane crash when Damon was only 15.
00:14:37His mother lent her strength of character to Damon but he was closer as a young adult to Phil Hill,
00:14:42the American Formula One champion. Damon started to race bikes not cars and it took him a long time
00:14:47to reach Formula One. He was 33 when he signed for Williams when his career finally took off
00:14:52and in the space of four years, he won 21 races, finished runner-up twice and won the Formula One
00:14:58World Championship. In dispute with Frank Williams over money however, he left the team at the end
00:15:02of the 1996 season in search of gold if not more success. Since then with Arrows and now with Jordan,
00:15:09Damon has won only one more race at Spa in 1998. It was a great win but when you've already achieved
00:15:15a championship, you need to be driving more than just the sixth best car in order to keep up your
00:15:20motivation. So this is the last time Damon will race at Silverstone at the British Grand Prix,
00:15:25the home of British motorsport. Thousands of fans will be behind him all the way today
00:15:30because Damon brought a brand of dignity and honesty to his profession that Formula One sees
00:15:35only rarely. Comparing Damon Hill to his famous father, you can see that Graham had a lot more
00:15:43ground spree in his career. 22 wins for Damon though, the numbers and the comparisons lie
00:15:48before you. A family that won three world championships but it only tells part of the
00:15:53story. Well it does, don't forget of course that Graham won the Indy 500 no less. And Damon didn't
00:15:58have a crack at that, but he's had a crack at an awful lot in 22 races in a career. Olivier
00:16:03Penice getting ready for his race. The countdown at Silverstone continues at 11 31.
00:16:10The countdown to Indy also continues. September 24th in the year 2000 is the target. 13 turns the
00:16:18track today. Derek along with Kevin Forbes takes a look at the home and straight, turns eight,
00:16:24nine and ten. The infield portion of the course that is still in the early stages of construction.
00:16:32Okay so we've come out of turn seven onto Holman Boulevard. Tell us all about it.
00:16:36Well this is the high speed portion of the infield. This is an area where we're trying
00:16:40to get a secondary overtaking opportunity and so along Holman Boulevard we've created this
00:16:46portion of the road course straight away. Hard left turn, good possibilities for overtaking.
00:16:52What sort of speed do you think they'll be taking down here? The speed profile is predicting about
00:16:57170 to maybe even the low 180s at that point. Well let's go down and take a look at turn eight.
00:17:03Well so the cars have come down the Holman Boulevard at 170 miles an hour, severe braking
00:17:08at the end into very tight turn eight and into what I consider to be probably the most picturesque
00:17:13part of the circuit. And then of course they turn into this very tight section following. Take us
00:17:17through it Kevin. Well this is the slowest part of the race course right here Derek.
00:17:21The model would indicate that this corner right here is about 55 to 60 miles an hour and here
00:17:28just an attempt to try to put as much of the race course next to this very picturesque area
00:17:32of the infield. And also it's a way to prepare the drivers for that very harsh
00:17:37flat out area as they exit turn 11.
00:17:43Kevin Forbes has been responsible for a lot of changes at Indy over the last decade and now
00:17:47he's building a new race course. If you'd like to keep track on preparations 1-800-822-4639
00:17:53or tickets at brickyard.com. Tickets not yet on sale. The prices we expect to be about equal to
00:18:00Indy 500 prices, that's pretty good. But haven't they done a wonderful job there changing the
00:18:04circuit dramatically and building all those new pits and the new media tower? Well they've done
00:18:08some magical work with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway as we take a look at the crowd here at
00:18:14Silverstone. Michael Schumacher's got some backers but Damon Hill a lot of backers and
00:18:18most of the cars have been brought up on the grid. 9.20 to go and they're beginning to tuck
00:18:23into the cockpits. Damon Hill getting in. In a moment we go one-on-one with his owner Eddie
00:18:28Jordan with Peter. Meantime what do some of the drivers and owners think of the Damon Hill
00:18:33situation? Well we asked. This job you only can do it if you're very motivated and you really
00:18:43enjoy what you're doing. If it's not you cannot do it. So I think Damon's decision is right if
00:18:50he's feeling this way. Damon is still you know one of the quickest drivers in the field and he
00:18:54still belongs to Formula One. I mean he has a bad season so far and I hope that he continues
00:19:00till the end to show us a few nice results before he leaves Formula One. If he wakes up in the
00:19:05morning as he has done and says I'm not really enjoying what I'm doing then he must stop.
00:19:09A. Because he won't go quick enough and B. It would be very unfortunate if he hurt himself when he
00:19:14shouldn't have been on the track. Although many people have different opinions of him I think
00:19:18that he's an honourable man and he'll be missed in the sport because there's a lot of guys now
00:19:24who don't remember what it is to be a gentleman on the track. Welcome back to the British Grand Prix
00:19:31where the speculation all weekend has been about the future of Damon Hill. I spoke to his team
00:19:36owner Eddie Jordan about this and the impact it has had on the team at this point of the year.
00:19:42What we didn't need was this some you know extra media pressure. Will Damon continue? Will he not
00:19:48continue? Because also we're coming here on the back of a very nice win and Langley Coor with
00:19:53Heinz-Harald Frentzen and it must be a little bit unfair on him you know to see all the limelight
00:19:58for all the wrong reasons on somebody else but that's the way life can be sometimes so
00:20:02Silverstone it's often been kind to us and let's hope it can be this weekend too.
00:20:07What do you want Damon to do? What I want him to do really at this moment is a private thing.
00:20:14I need Damon to make his decision first. I mean he has made this decision
00:20:18after Canada about what was retirement and then in Monaco he made another decision and it's probably
00:20:26a daunting time so really what I can do best in this situation is support him to the hilt
00:20:31and to give him the most possible psychological benefit that I can but nevertheless I have to
00:20:37think about the team and I will think about the team first. You've tested Verstappen, you've tested
00:20:42Nakano, are they the drivers you'd be looking at in the future? I'm not saying we're not looking
00:20:46at them, I'm not saying we are looking at them. If Damon is not going to continue then of course
00:20:51alternative plans have to be moved forward but they need to be moved forward quickly.
00:20:55Micasalo? We looked at Micasalo and talked to Micasalo. The situation is at the moment that
00:21:00there is a slight conflict there because he thought he was free to talk to us and we wanted
00:21:06to check with his team as most good teams will do and he's not free to talk to us or he's not
00:21:10free to leave at this moment in time. Eddie Jordan, a man who'd like to get on with business and to
00:21:17end the speculation. Back to you. Not an easy time for Eddie Jordan in fact and of course very
00:21:21difficult because he needs constructors points and it's no good drivers out there at the moment
00:21:25that he can really pick up. Yamano truly having a chat before he climbs into his cockpit. 4.56 to go
00:21:34before we get this underway and we have 22 of them set to go in just a few moments. There's
00:21:42Fisichella having a last slug on the old energy bottle with lots of minerals and electrolytes in
00:21:47that drink. While we wait for them to all queue up let's take a look at the Toyota starting grid
00:21:52and they'll be led around into the first corner we assume by Mika Hakkinen for the sixth time this
00:21:58year he's on pole. Michael Schumacher I think was very disappointed but he has not had a good
00:22:03weekend so far. David Coulthard the other McLaren on the inside of row number two his sixth race on
00:22:08home turf. And Eddie Irvine he did a very good job but he did his early in the session wanted more
00:22:12out of the car. Row number three Heinz Harald Frentzen coming off his painful win as we now know
00:22:18in France. And Damon Hill of course getting up there right beside him for the first time this
00:22:22year. Rubens Barrichello they hoped for better than this after the pole in France but they are
00:22:26on row four. And Ralf Schumacher doing another great job in the Winfield Williams of course with
00:22:30a super tech engine. Jacques Villeneuve in row number five has won this race twice. And we saw
00:22:36John Alese spinning early he didn't have a good weekend trying to straighten the car out. 1995
00:22:40British Grand Prix champion Johnny Herbert in the next row. Better than this did quite a good job
00:22:44but still not really up there. Third visit to Silverstone he did it again in 1993 and 94.
00:22:49Alessandro Zanardi but it's a new track to him. Agnano Trulli again proving that he's the quickest
00:22:54man at the Prost team. The next row Olivier Panisse in the Prost and Riccardo Zanta in the
00:22:59BAR playing catch-up after the early season injuries. Behind them Giancarlo Fisichella
00:23:04and Alexander Wirtz the two Benetton's. Wirtz ran third here in 1997 his only career podium.
00:23:10The arrows in row number 10 and in row number 11 at the back Luca Badauer in the Minardi
00:23:16alongside Marc Genet also in the Minardi. Preparations continue for the British Grand Prix
00:23:23this is the grandstand overlooking the final turn onto the front straightaway the Woodcock turn.
00:23:29In a moment we'll be back to get a look at the start as 22 are ready to go.
00:23:34It's round eight of the 1999 Formula One World Championship.
00:23:40Welcome back to the Grand Prix of Great Britain on Fox Sportsnet there's a look at Olivier Panisse
00:23:46in the Prost he's gone back to the garage to get into his backup machine. But it's not his it's
00:23:50actually Jarno Trulli it was set up for him and that's why he's been standing there scratching
00:23:54waiting hoping they're going to get the car ready so he can get out there remember he has to start
00:23:58from the pit lane. Derek here Damon Hill ready to go and his third row grid spot a sensor on the car
00:24:07went bad on true on Panisse's original mount so he will have to go to the backup that's not
00:24:15really set up for him but the space in the grid does remain open even though he slides too well
00:24:19to the right hand side there of the drivers in the pits to come out. The green light is out and
00:24:25the formation lap is underway as we see the wheel spin and the tire burn moving on out and get on
00:24:31board once again with Damon Hill we'll see a lot of the top of his helmet throughout the course of
00:24:36this race here through the first corner now we have to think about race tactics and all of the
00:24:42other elements that the men along the pit wall are thinking most specifically about yes well they
00:24:47seem they seem to be running uh going for two pit stops they're running this everybody's running
00:24:52the softer of the two tires uh which means that they actually get a very good first lap on the
00:24:58tires but the tires then go off just a little bit afterwards so really it's down to having
00:25:02really excellent pit stops six seven second pit stops and of course it's not easy for the
00:25:07overtaking on the Silverstone circuit remember this is the pace lap they're not going to be
00:25:12going that fast Damon just steadying the car up he doesn't want to burn all the rubber off these
00:25:15tires because you'll need them at the start as I said they are good when they're new could anybody
00:25:21throw a curve in terms of the two-stop strategy as they they go along it's a relatively smooth
00:25:26circuit and they are hard tires could they make it that way I don't think they can manage it
00:25:32without stop I think they're going to have to stop I'll be a bit surprised if some don't make
00:25:35three stops quite frankly okay we'll keep an eye on that it's always an issue in every formula one
00:25:40race this these days now let's by way of quick review take a look at the driver points coming
00:25:45into it an eight point margin at the top for Mika Hakkinen over Michael Schumacher Irvine in the
00:25:51third position and Frentzen Ralf Schumacher having a terrific year in Fisichella in the sixth place
00:25:56of course the McLarens are not leading in the constructors points just yet but they've gained
00:26:03some significant ground over the last three events as well as Hakkinen and Great Britain
00:26:09the teams that have had the greatest success Ferrari is the leader among those then Williams
00:26:14and they've had great success over the last decade of course McLaren has nine victories
00:26:19but none since 1989 with Prost in the car first turn strategy Derek well it's going to be vital
00:26:28that Michael makes a slightly better start than he did on that warm-up lap when he smoked the tires
00:26:33it's a very very fast corner and almost flat from the start line I would say so it's going to be
00:26:38right quite difficult to know just how much you can break I don't think it'll be easy to overtake
00:26:42going in there but further back in the field there'll be a lot of shuffling going on and
00:26:45therefore they probably will be some passes made over the last couple of weeks as we look in the
00:26:54Benetton garage area 49th Grand Prix of Great Britain 32nd at Silverstone Ferrari's first
00:27:01ever F1 win 1951 and Damon Hill's F1 debut came here in 1992 and he also won the race
00:27:07during the decade of the 90s but not in the year he won the world championship they're almost
00:27:14in formation we'll wait for the green flag at the back that will signal us they are ready then we
00:27:18will watch the lights a series of red lights will appear when they disappear we have a race
00:27:26Damon Hill sits quietly in his Jordan
00:27:29they're taking a little bit too long to get those lights going which is bad there they go three four
00:27:39and we're away
00:27:40great start from the two McLarens and Ralf Schumacher coming up there look like there was a car at the back stopped on the track there's some yellow flags
00:27:49Bill knew there's one back there I thought I saw more than one that did not get away perhaps
00:27:54my eyes were playing tricks on me but you can see Coulthard has moved past the Ferraris and
00:27:59there were a couple of them we'll identify them and get a red flag well that'll help Michael
00:28:04Schumacher somewhat because he was uh certainly out fumbled by Micah Hacken and out driven by
00:28:10David Coulthard and Michael certainly didn't need that oh a great start for David Coulthard
00:28:16off the line and oh heavily into the tires it's like Schumacher is that Michael I believe it was
00:28:25and he went straight through Michael Schumacher leaving the course after the race had been stopped
00:28:30after a not so good start for him that was a big hit Alex Zanardi was left at the line
00:28:37incidentally so it was Villeneuve and Zanardi back at the grid and Michael Schumacher in the Ferrari
00:28:43heavily into the tires look at his front wheel back by the rear when he's gone right in there
00:28:48right through the tire wall and he's not in in in terribly good shape right now they've got to get
00:28:52that first aid there as quickly as they can and the the medical car should be right there of course
00:28:57it has to get across the sand which isn't that easy to do well the energy absorption capacity of
00:29:03stacks of tires is is remarkably good but he went straight in yeah he's trapped in there he I mean I
00:29:08I don't know why I mean he wasn't going that really that fast one would assume they'd all been
00:29:13given the word that the red flag was coming out because of the car's back and slowing down you
00:29:17would have thought so but they did seem to be going very very fast that group and I did see either
00:29:21Irvine or Schumacher slipping by one or the other at that point and then Michael just went straight
00:29:26off look at this look at the uh the gravel there I mean he hasn't made any imprint on it at all like
00:29:31the brakes totally failed he hasn't marked it at all straight through the sand and straight into
00:29:38the tires two stacks have actually lined up stacked up three deep there and all of the safety workers
00:29:45and track officials on hand now Mr. Todd looking on with great interest and concern one would assume
00:29:53so we had the formation laps the reconnaissance laps and the green came out over the
00:30:01British Grand Prix the two McLarens got away well but two at the back did not Zanardi
00:30:07and Villeneuve so they threw the red flag over the course before three or four turns had been
00:30:13concluded under the red flag Michael Schumacher completely missed a turn it looked as though he
00:30:19was up on a curb very high just before he missed the corner straight into the tires and I think
00:30:26we're going to get a look at exactly what happened once again there here they come look Michael
00:30:32looks like he's going straight on instead of turning into the corner look at him I mean he
00:30:35just did not slow down like complete not a brake failure there was no marks in the sand at all
00:30:41um they have got him out but he's in the seat they've taken the whole seat out which is the
00:30:45new regulations for this year where the whole seat has to bring the take the driver out in
00:30:49in situ as it were so you can't damage his back what a tragedy for Ferrari and of course for
00:30:54Michael Schumacher but they would look to me like there was certainly something wrong there he did
00:30:58not slow down at all and and the first time he probably had to use the brakes in earnest here
00:31:04we go at speed take another look here we come Michael I'm not Michael's on the on the outside
00:31:09presumably oh no look he locks the brakes up something locks up look like the rear brakes did
00:31:14not stop at all what an impact the front ones appeared to lock up and the rears appeared that
00:31:19they probably weren't even slowing down at all high speed crash for Michael Schumacher here we
00:31:25come again finished Grand Prix and again we look at it he's the red car on the right on the right
00:31:29now he's coming down inside Eddie he obviously doesn't know about he's he's right behind Eddie
00:31:33he puts the brakes on look at that straight across the road and straight off I mean no slowing down
00:31:39at all he couldn't even avoid where he was going straight into Stowe corner
00:31:43well the entry there is at about 185 miles an hour into the turn at the break point sorry
00:31:48about that and through the corner at 110 so that's a high philosophy velocity crash no question
00:31:54and the medical people have taken over the situation and will supervise his extraction
00:31:59from the Ferrari race car here at Silverstone let's take a look through the eyes of Damon Hill
00:32:05coming down for David is right behind it he's not he just sees the tire he just sees the tires
00:32:10lock up as Michael comes in there and Michael I mean he's not on a bad line as he goes in there
00:32:15so you can't say there was dirt on the road look at the black tar marks that is totally as though
00:32:19just the rears had locked unless of course the throttle jammed open there was always that
00:32:23possibility that that might have happened happened to him of course they got the stretcher out um but
00:32:28of course they haven't got him out of the seat yet so he must be fairly injured which is a tragedy
00:32:32at this stage of the at any stage for anybody but they're the team looking on with great concern
00:32:37about what they're going to do now um you saw Ross Braun just now looking very concerned about the
00:32:41whole thing if he had in fact only had the front brakes locking up which appeared what it'd been
00:32:46very difficult for him to change the trajectory of the car and swerve at all and he didn't seem
00:32:50to make any movement either way the car just went straight off the rest of the field has come back
00:32:56around to the front and we will completely restart the event from the beginning of lap number one
00:33:03it's scheduled for 60 laps Mika Hakkinen talking with Ron Dennis there and they looked a bit
00:33:09concerned I think actually Ron was explaining to Mika what had happened while it would have been
00:33:13behind Mika he probably at that point wouldn't have seen any of it no well nobody would have
00:33:17seen much of it because they were too busy trying to get around the corners themselves
00:33:21and there's David Coulthard looking concerned wondering what happened as well
00:33:27can't believe that but then this is what motor racing unfortunately happens from time to time
00:33:30these accidents happen and uh because it does put a spell of gloom over the race and now of course
00:33:36it's down to Eddie Jordan Eddie Irvine to do a great job here for Ferrari and I think he will
00:33:43do a fine job but there was I swear there was something wrong with that car because you normally
00:33:47do not go straight off the road so we wait for a definition on that situation and definition
00:33:53on the condition of Michael Schumacher we can update you on a couple of other runners Hannes
00:34:00will be in the backup we understand but now we'll be able to start from his grid position out on the
00:34:05track rather than the pits Jacques Villeneuve who was left at the line will be in a backup car
00:34:10Zanardi who was left at the line will be in his originally scheduled Williams but uh and will be
00:34:17in his grid spot here we go again but this now look at Michael he's still steaming on there coming
00:34:23there terribly fast and the speculation is and I did mention it just now is that the throttle did
00:34:27stick open and of course there's so little you can do because those rear wheels are still plowing on
00:34:32with 800 horsepower and he did not slow down at all and that's not like Michael to not try and
00:34:38swerve or to make some sort of adjustment you see it's such a pity they did not know that the red
00:34:44flag was out and there's a lack of communication there because he they should have been told already
00:34:47red flag look at that straight across here wonder he didn't take Eddie overnight with him
00:34:52but straight in look at that impact I mean it must have been 140 mile an hour impact
00:34:57huge huge crash for Michael Schumacher at Silverstone the British Grand Prix and there
00:35:02you see the rescue effort ongoing I believe he's out of the car and down in the midst of that group
00:35:08of technicians and medical people there is Mika Hakkinen discussing the situation in the pits he
00:35:16will start from pole in a few moments when they're able to re-grid them but right now
00:35:20the prominent issue is the service and help medical attention given to Michael Schumacher
00:35:26at the scene of the crash at the other end of the course all the way down as far from the pits as
00:35:32you can get at Stowe corner a high speed in fact the fastest straightaway on the course I believe
00:35:39I'm right look at that there's one of his front wheels I mean it just pushed it straight back and
00:35:44it was right lying there with the rear wheel and of course once the front wheels come off the nose
00:35:48goes through like a spear through those other tires but Mike as far as I'm aware this is the
00:35:52first time Michael's had a injurious crash in Formula One and some but we always thought that
00:35:59maybe he was actually sort of you know sort of impervious to any to any injury but because the
00:36:05crowds and the fans and of course his teammates all gone very very quiet well as you say it is a
00:36:12fact of racing that these things do occur but when they jump at you in such violent and dramatic
00:36:18fashion especially involving one of the prominent people well it just takes you back well I mean
00:36:24can you just these obviously mixed fans here they just don't know what quite what to think about it
00:36:28of course his team are in there in the pits they do not know they haven't got a clue what's happened
00:36:32to him and they are taking a long time to get him out of that safety seat which is I say is the seat
00:36:36within the car that they remove the driver in so there is no injury excessive injury to him now
00:36:41they're moving him onto the stretcher I think as we speak Professor Watkins will in fact of course
00:36:48be there all the time he's the Formula One doctor and everybody has the great areas on the right
00:36:52with a white helmet in the dark blue suit and he'll be really very very cautious about what
00:36:58happens and how he's looked after they do have the most remarkable hospital facilities here at
00:37:05Silverstone they have many many doctors on hand this weekend they have 24 ambulances they have
00:37:1050 doctors and they have beds for 15 patients plus a helipad and an operating theater so
00:37:17150 medical staff are available Eddie Irvine sitting there must be wondering just uh what
00:37:22has happened to his teammate because although you are very competitive you're also very concerned
00:37:25about one of your colleagues in Formula One as a very close circuit of people and very special
00:37:30one to the other and one would assume very concerned about knowing what went wrong with
00:37:35the car if indeed they can determine that yeah well of course that is the problem is determining
00:37:43really what it is and what took place and whether it could happen on Eddie's car but um you know it
00:37:48is very rare for two things to happen like that it is the new engine of course but the new engine
00:37:53is only really just an up of 15 horsepower more and a lighter engine it shouldn't be
00:37:57anything to do with a throttle linkage happening there in fact a very good friend of mine David
00:38:01Hurley he actually crashed in the British Grand Prix at Beckett's corner at 160 miles an hour and
00:38:07had the biggest impact had the greatest impact ever incurred by a Formula One car and his
00:38:13his legs were brought up right by his chin and he had 27 brakes in his hips so it's pretty bad
00:38:18they're shielding obviously Michael from the cameras at this point they don't want people
00:38:21taking pictures as he's taken away but as you noticed he was totally conscious when he was in
00:38:26the car and they've probably given him some drip to keep him very calm right now well what you would
00:38:32have to be most concerned I would suppose about his legs given the angle of the impact straight
00:38:36into the tires even with their cushioning effect as you mentioned when the wheels strip away some
00:38:41of the energy absorption is gone and over to the ambulance they have now taken him and we're
00:38:47talking about Eddie Irvine and perhaps some of his concern on Friday here the prosts actually
00:38:54took their cars out of the afternoon practice Jarno Trulli had a wishbone break they didn't
00:38:59know why they were able to send that metal back to the metallurgist at the shop that built them
00:39:05and while they did that neither of their cars ran just as a precaution in case it was a problem with
00:39:10the other car they're always aware of that yes I you see Ferrari will have a pretty good indication
00:39:15that the throttle did stick open because it would show on their telemetry in the pits
00:39:19so they will probably know why and what it was that created it but I mean why should it not have
00:39:23happened on the warming up lap before one doesn't know but my goodness what an impact that car went
00:39:28straight in those tires I mean those tires are very very hard they're actually tied together
00:39:33four rows of tires and as you can see sort of six or eight high so the car did take a tremendous
00:39:38impact now they've got to get rid of it I think that's Charlie Whiting who's the technical delegate
00:39:42from the team that's I don't know if that's Michael's wife Corinna but she certainly
00:39:48I don't think it is actually but I haven't seen her at the races much this year
00:39:53I think she'd be more agitated than that
00:39:58so just after the start of the British Grand Prix in the midst of the first lap with a red
00:40:03flag having been displayed because Jacques Villeneuve and Alex Zanardi did not get away
00:40:08from the grid Michael Schumacher went straight through the stow corner and into the tires and
00:40:17has now been placed in an ambulance and headed for the hospital for medical attention we are
00:40:24going to restart the race from its beginning with Mika Hakkinen on pole momentarily we'll
00:40:30be back to Great Britain in a moment
00:40:32welcome back to Silverstone the Grand Prix of Great Britain still under a red flag we will be
00:40:37for a few more moments the cleanup for the Michael Schumacher incident has nearly been concluded
00:40:43in the first lap he went off at turn number one we're told he has a broken right leg and is on
00:40:49his way to a local hospital and that lady knows how it feels Georgie Georgie Hill
00:40:56Georgie Georgie Hill here we go Michael is the second car of those two he's going down the
00:41:01inside of Eddie not realizing that the red flag is already out because nobody's told him which
00:41:05is rather unfortunate he's down inside they're turning into stow Eddie's out right out to the
00:41:10left Michael goes to brake look at that how late they brake and then we assume the throttle
00:41:15sticks wide open and he's got those front wheels locked the rear wheel still churning 780 horsepower
00:41:19and he went in there really really hard just watch this how fast it is
00:41:27down on the corner we'll see just watch to the left of the screen and how quickly the car comes
00:41:31across the line you can see there Michael trying to get out of the car on his own before the workers
00:41:36got to him yeah well that was a good sign early there it is just look at the speed of that I mean
00:41:41there was no deceleration at all on that sand or on the gravel which is meant to be and look at
00:41:46that's the that's the actual nose of the car that's the foot well that's where the pedals
00:41:50are and where his feet were we understand he may well have only broken a leg but my goodness what
00:41:55an impact and it ripped that off that there's Ralph who looked his brother of course very
00:41:59concerned he must be and he's just figuring how much time there is can I ever got time yes 15
00:42:03minutes or so you've got to get across there and see how your brother is and this is the
00:42:07what's the remnants of that Ferrari and they'll give that a very close inspection quite obviously
00:42:12although as you pointed out Derek a while ago the telemetry may have already defined everything
00:42:18from start to finish a look at Mika Hakkinen visor down now as they are beginning to fire
00:42:24the engines it will be 60 laps a full race is still scheduled for the British Grand Prix and
00:42:31you can see the slot on the outside of row one grid position number two is open and the second
00:42:38formation lap of the day is underway the two McLarens away the Jordan of Damon Hill Eddie
00:42:44Irvine now flying the Ferrari colors on his own as they go through Copse and down toward Beckett's
00:42:50the formation lap again and really a critical moment for them all I would suspect Derek because
00:42:57they've had some time to sit and think and I don't care how cold or inured you are to the risks of
00:43:03racing it's an upsetting moment when something like that happens well it's very upsetting a lot
00:43:07of the drivers have done a lot of races but he was probably the most experienced and certainly
00:43:12the oldest one out there and he felt it very very much you could see the expression on his face just
00:43:16now it is tough for these guys but of course once the old race starts or once they get out on this
00:43:21lap all those concerns go they'll be looking at when they come down to Stowe which they've already
00:43:26done and had a look at the corner see where Michael went try to put it out of their minds
00:43:30and really from now on they will not consider that once more the only person that might of course
00:43:34is brother Ralph he might be a little bit worried and concerned about it but
00:43:37I think they've all been relieved to know that it wasn't a major major accident
00:43:42this broken right leg we are told for Michael Schumacher and he has been airlifted away from
00:43:48the Silverstone area and to what we believe would be Northampton General Hospital for the necessary
00:43:53treatment now in the first start a while ago the McLaren's got away beautifully the Ferrari's not
00:43:59so well Michael will not be there on the second grid spot it opens a lane one might think for Eddie
00:44:05Irvine does his tactic change at all well because of course they're offset on the grid it's very
00:44:10difficult for Eddie to make up all that ground he didn't have a good start well he had a better
00:44:13start than Michael but still not a great start last time it's gonna be terribly difficult for
00:44:17him to get up there and amongst the McLarens all he can hope for is one of them has a poor start
00:44:20and he can get in amongst them remember he has got both Frenzen and Hill, Hill wants him to do
00:44:25exceptionally well in his probably his final British Grand Prix and Frenzen trying to get out
00:44:28there knows he's got a chance of having a crack at the title now with Michael losing a few races
00:44:34the red flag was actually precipitated by the fact that Jacques Villeneuve and Alex Zanardi
00:44:39did not get away from the grid they will be out there Villeneuve in a backup Zanardi will stay
00:44:43with the same car Olivier Panisse who had gone to a backup and was starting from the pits will now
00:44:48start in the backup on the straightaway they have given him back his grid spot again 60 laps is the
00:44:56required distance and once again we take a look at the grid on the front we have Mika Hakkinen
00:45:02Michael Schumacher not there then David Coulthard and Eddie Irvine slotting into their positions
00:45:06Heinz-Harald Frenzen and Damon Hill in the next row then Rubens Barrichello and Ralph Schumacher
00:45:11that's a look over the top of Damon Hill Jacques Villeneuve and Jean Alessi in the fifth row
00:45:15Gianni Herbert and Pedro Diniz in the next row Alessandro Zanardi 13th grid spot and Trulli
00:45:21then Panisse, Zanta, Fisichella, Wurz, Tekaki, De La Rosa, Badawer and Marc Genet at the back
00:45:29and again they've come to a stop we'll wait for the red lights to deploy they are the
00:45:33revs are coming up and we're about ready to resume at Silverstone
00:45:43Eddie Jordan Eddie sorry Eddie Irvine just blocked out that Jordan there but only Justin
00:45:48gets himself in the second place ahead of David Coulthard a great move by Eddie Irvine
00:45:53so Irvine picks up his spot as he goes just slightly to the right and holds off the McLarens
00:45:58but again Mika Hakkinen is away well and Damon Hill and Heinz-Harald Frenzen in the Jordans
00:46:03looking for a great start and nearly picked up a couple of spots and De La Rosa was left on the
00:46:08grid this time they'll see if they can clear that away now coming down to Stoke Corner there's
00:46:12Hakkinen in the lead with Eddie Irvine in second he was smiling as he sat in the cockpit during
00:46:17the break having heard the news that Michael was not that severely injured and certainly that would
00:46:22ease your mind a bit trying to get back to a racing mode it certainly does and of course Eddie
00:46:26has got a lot on his plate because there's only one car out there to get constructors points
00:46:29something that's very very important to Ferrari he is between the two McLarens which is important
00:46:35but Coulthard has been going well all weekend but not quite well enough Eddie's been going well in
00:46:39early practice but not so well in qualifying as they come down into the beginning of what we call
00:46:44Abbey curve the appointed distance is 60 laps that's what it will be all of the action that
00:46:51transpired or albeit brief from the first start it doesn't exist in terms of the record books
00:46:57or the length of this race of course Mika Hakkinen has been dominant all weekend every session he's
00:47:02been fastest Eddie Irvine's been running there as well of course it's very difficult to get
00:47:08that car away from the grid the safety car is on the track again we assume because Della Rosa
00:47:14was stopped and so they'll gather up the field and slow them down after just one lap with Mika
00:47:20Hakkinen in first and then Irvine then Coulthard and then Frentzen and then uh Ralph Schumacher
00:47:26who got a good start Damon Hill is in sixth position the bit the biggest problem the biggest
00:47:32problem was of course they couldn't get that car pushed out of the way because you can't get it
00:47:37through the pit wall at Silverstone because there is no room so you have to take it either to one
00:47:41end or the other of the pit road and it's Della Rosa sitting in the car Pedro Della Rosa who
00:47:47ran sixth in Australia but with the arrows of course having a difficult season trying to get
00:47:53things all together third straight race with the safety car a new regular element in Formula One
00:48:00you haven't seen it that much over the years but safety is is the better decision and he will be
00:48:08back in off the track and turn them loose again after this lap it was just because I think the
00:48:14field was getting a lot around a little bit quicker than they wanted it to to keep everybody
00:48:19safe and get the Della Rosa car out of the way they put it out for one lap Michael Schumacher
00:48:23now is being taken out to the helicopter we'd been told he'd already left but that's not the
00:48:28case here he comes now and with the broken leg we're told he'll go for treatment at a hospital nearby
00:48:37they're being very gentle with him as well they should although the
00:48:39freight the helicopter is going to vibrate its way all the way to the hospital nonetheless
00:48:47now they're going to try and keep these tires warm by weaving around as you can see Hacken
00:48:50and the other and Eddie Irvine behind him warming those tires up as they come
00:48:54into the Abbey curve you can see the old Abbey curve right behind in the back of that shot there
00:48:58just shows how fast it was through that corner absolutely flat it used to be and the pace car
00:49:03the safety car pulling away considerably from the racing equipment and he'll be taking a right turn
00:49:09into the pits in a couple of more corners we believe and Mika Hakkinen will lead the acceleration
00:49:15up the front straightaway this will be the end of lap number two with 58 to go in the British
00:49:22Grand Prix and you see the field tightening up behind Hakkinen as he looked like he slowed down
00:49:26in the corner making sure he gets in the right gear and he'll try and pull away from them because
00:49:32it's if I may interrupt it's pretty difficult they're going to go now it's difficult for the
00:49:35tail enders because they can't get on the power let's just see if Coulthard will get by Eddie Irvine
00:49:39because David really needs to do this he's right close behind Eddie as they go up the straight he's
00:49:42right there right beside him and Eddie's got the inside line and Eddie's got around the corner
00:49:47just in front of him I hope he doesn't go off too wide poor David David really needs to get with
00:49:52Mac Mika Hakkinen because this is one race I've said this many times but he needs to win here
00:49:57David needs to have a great result he's had a miserable torrid season so far technical section
00:50:02of the course very famous very fast very flowing if you get it right I guess it's just an absolute
00:50:08joy if you get it wrong it's diabolical well of course you get one corner wrong you get the whole
00:50:11darn lot through that other sequence up there as you do down at the pits end of the track so
00:50:16it's quite difficult for them great restart for Hakkinen as you suggested he trapped most of them
00:50:22in the twisty bits as he slowed down waited for the pace car to really I guess go out of sight
00:50:27and then he hammered the throttle but he only had one or two cars that could go with him potentially
00:50:32not the whole field and that was well thought out one would think on the part of Hakkinen he
00:50:36doesn't have a huge lead but he certainly has the superior car he has been p1 in every session
00:50:42the entire weekend including the warm-up this morning
00:50:45Villeneuve and Zanardi well down there off course after having problems on their first restart
00:50:52or on their first start should I say as they're working their way down through
00:50:57as they come through Prairie into Brooklands and into Luffield this is the new portion of the
00:51:01circuit they work their way around the pit entrances just after this corner so they can
00:51:07slip in the pit lane when they require there's the pit entrance you can just see it there
00:51:11not an easy track to overtake on you really have to work on the driver and hope that he makes an
00:51:15error must be so much more difficult these days because of course they don't have a manual gearbox
00:51:20so you can't hope that the driver might miss a gear when he's shifting and this one he just flicks
00:51:24a lever and knows he can't go wrong unless it jams up solid Ralf Schumacher fifth in the serial
00:51:30at the moment coming out of eighth position on the grid as he came he started really seventh with
00:51:36Michael gone but we saw the great concern from him going to the hospital checking with the Ferrari
00:51:41people and apparently satisfied in heading back to his car and he like Eddie Irvine perhaps faced
00:51:48with a significant job of getting his concentration back but apparently he's done yes he seems to be
00:51:53he's a young man and he can handle it as long as he knows his brother's all right he'll be fine
00:51:58good look at David Coulthard as he moves through in third position the top six Hocken and Irvine
00:52:04Coulthard Frentzen Ralf up from seventh on the starting grid this time and Damon Hill in sixth
00:52:10position right where he started Schumacher didn't get around him just after the start Damon not
00:52:16having the best start of the weekend but he has had a promising weekend and some of the speculation
00:52:21has started to lean back toward the other side of the fence that he would stick around if it goes
00:52:26well today Mika Hakkinen in control after three laps by a second and a half over Eddie Irvine
00:52:351.6 says Frentzen is listed in the third position let's take a look at the racetrack here as one of
00:52:43the two cars one of the two arrows come in the pits there very early on the race they have been
00:52:51they're now contracted to run the the Renault Superdick engine next year which is certainly
00:52:56a move forward for the Arrows team having had a really lousy year this year running their own
00:53:01engines they're going to run the Superdick engine here's an arrow shot of the start again you see
00:53:06Mika Hakkinen making a great start Coulthard not and then Michael and Coulthard blocking out
00:53:12Heinz-Harald Frentzen yeah he thought he saw a little hole right between them and stuck his
00:53:16nose up in there but quickly backed off as it closed on him of course if they touched tires
00:53:22even at that low rate of speed it would take everybody out here comes let's just watch Eddie
00:53:27he has a great start here because remember Michael's not there in front of him they block out
00:53:32the Frentzen car and of course Eddie slots into second place a great piece of driving
00:53:36and Ralf Schumacher has already gotten by Damon Hill at that point I think what he was is David
00:53:42Coulthard was so preoccupied with trying to keep the Jordan out the way that he went a bit sideways
00:53:45and lost a bit of Ford momentum so we're in the early laps of the British Grand Prix and here's
00:53:53Coulthard right up on the wing of Eddie Irvine a moment ago as he swung out to the left did
00:53:58he get a pass here I think this this may well have been the actual the first lap as they came
00:54:03through the replay yeah Chris we saw it from ground level the first time it happened he did
00:54:08take a peek but it was the long way around and he thought better of it at the time so Mika Hakkinen
00:54:14and then Eddie Irvine there is Coulthard Heinz-Harald Frentzen then Ralf Schumacher
00:54:20Damon Hill the top six if Damon didn't really need to let Ralf by but Ralf is obviously
00:54:26driving like a man his body's got to uphold the Schumacher name today we're in Beckett's
00:54:31coming up to Stowe
00:55:01he's coming around the left corner now Damon as you saw that he short-shifted as he came around
00:55:11that corner hard left-hander here at Abbey we had a big wiggle back in Beckett's didn't we?
00:55:24the second turn in this complex is where a whole bunch of them
00:55:28have had difficulty maintaining grip right here all weekend
00:55:35you can hear him getting the wheel spin right at the end
00:55:38wheel spin here too as he comes back to the straightaway again we move back up front
00:55:42there goes Hakkinen there goes second place Eddie Irvine and there is David Coulthard in
00:55:47third and the rest of the positions remain unchanged we're in the early laps of the
00:55:50British Grand Prix Hakkinen leads on Fox Sportsnet we'll be back in a moment
00:55:58welcome back to the British Grand Prix there's the leader Mika Hakkinen who started from pole
00:56:03position and is somewhat driving off from everybody Fox Sports News primetime Keith
00:56:09Olbermann and Kevin Frazier bring you all the day's scores highlights and breaking stories
00:56:14it's nightly at 10 p.m. on Fox Sportsnet so please check your local listings Mika Hakkinen
00:56:19pulling away briskly from the start the second start of the day Michael Schumacher injured
00:56:26shortly after the original green flag Eddie Irvine continues to maintain second position
00:56:31followed by David Coulthard and then Heinz-Harald Frentzen
00:56:36Ralph Schumacher and Damon Hill the last standings there you see the space it's not
00:56:40growing by leaps and bounds but it's growing steadily coming back toward the front straightaway
00:56:47once again we're still in the early laps of a scheduled 60 lap race here which will take us
00:56:52out to about 192 miles and there they are they're leaving with Michael Schumacher on board to the
00:56:58hospital Michael Schumacher crashing heavily in stow at the beginning of the race a while ago
00:57:04they've since had the restart of course and we are told he has a broken right leg but that's the
00:57:10extent of it look at it John Alesi having a real look there on the inside of Rubens Barrichello
00:57:16that is a fight for seventh position that's a fight for position as John Alesi up from the 10th
00:57:24grid spot has joined the battle with Rubens Barrichello and Alesi right now is in his 10th
00:57:32British Grand Prix hasn't won but he's been on the podium three different times he's also retired
00:57:37five times so the place hasn't been all that kind to him now he's had a tough time remember of course
00:57:42that the Alesi and the Sauber has the previous model Ferrari engine in their car Sauber's done
00:57:48another contract with Sauber for next year there's his best finish for second 94 95 and 97 so he's
00:57:55had some great results here great results in a few retirements and they go through the Beckett's
00:58:00complex once again it's so fun to watch them move through their little bit of wheel slide but again
00:58:06a technical part of the race course that I think the drivers truly enjoy as well here they come
00:58:10right at you into stow
00:58:23to recap today's activity the race scheduled for 60 laps reached its green flag scheduled start
00:58:32time a while ago two cars were left on the grid those of Jacques Villeneuve and Alex Zanardi
00:58:38therefore race officials elected to go to a red flag but by then the front of the field was
00:58:45approaching the stow corner we do not know whether or not specifically Michael Schumacher or anyone
00:58:51else in the field for that matter had been yet told there was a red flag but Schumacher's car
00:58:56went straight through stow corner and straight into the tires almost at a 90 degree angle and
00:59:01definitely at a huge rate of speed it took a while to extract him from the car he was taken
00:59:07by ambulance to the track hospital where he was diagnosed to have a broken right leg he has in the
00:59:14last few moments then been placed in a helicopter and off to the hospital for treatment the word up
00:59:19and down the pits was given that he was relatively okay everyone we believe they have breathed a
00:59:25sigh of relief and they went to a start with his grid spot Michael Schumacher's grid spot
00:59:30left open since then Mika Hakkinen who's been quickest all weekend long in every session and
00:59:36started from pole has taken the lead Irvine picked up a spot right off the start as did
00:59:42Ralf Schumacher and that's where they stand the top six after the first three or four corners
00:59:47has remained unchanged and Mika Hakkinen is building on his lead steadily as we approach
00:59:53the end of lap number 12 of the scheduled 60 here Pedro de la Rosa in fact pulled off we saw his
00:59:59car go in the pit some while ago you couldn't select any gears which is always quite a drawback
01:00:03when you're trying to go forwards that is that's a very close interesting dice going on there as we
01:00:09said just now Alessi having a real look down the inside of Barry Kello and of course Johnny
01:00:14Herbert close behind Johnny doing a good race at his home Grand Pyramid Johnny did win here
01:00:18in the Benetton a couple years three years ago we're about a sixth of the way through it and
01:00:29I guess with Michael Schumacher not in the mix but certainly according
01:00:34to the form we've seen this weekend if not the form we expected coming to the event all together
01:00:39well of course so far with Michael Schumacher having this incident has opened up this
01:00:44Constructors' Championship somewhat and of course the Drivers' Championship now
01:00:48is going to be even wider open we don't know quite when Michael Irvine's in third
01:00:53place in the championship with only 26 points to Michael's 32 to Mika Hakkinen's 40
01:00:58so they are close let's ride with Damon Hill
01:01:22slowest corner on the circuit
01:01:24and they have a real job getting traction see him short shift
01:01:29look at that wheel spin he's an adverse camber coming out of there
01:01:54it's getting very slippery right here
01:02:11and by the stripe another successful lap for Damon Hill and into another you can see his
01:02:18on his right index finger you can see him just flicking the there he goes you can see his finger
01:02:22moving on the top of the wheel he comes into Beckett's complex you could also hear that he was
01:02:27actually short shifting and we call it shifting at sort of lower revs than normal up to the next gear
01:02:31just to get the traction of the car in the corner because he was spinning so many wheels
01:02:35because you do need the wheels to actually be going forwards and not spinning the car sideways
01:02:39we understand as part of the Takagi day Badouin has touched him and there's an overheating problem
01:02:48with the Takagi car you see all the standings there back to the Ferrari a couple of issues as
01:02:55the race has kind of settled down here for a moment Derek first of all we know they won pole
01:03:00with a new version of their engine at Montreal they also ran that ball of buying at France and
01:03:06they have done some extensive testing with it now it is in the race car of a Irvine yes it's about
01:03:1215 horsepower more brake horsepower more than it was but the most important thing was that the
01:03:17engine was also lighter which means that they can then move the weight around within the chassis to
01:03:22the required place to get a better car balance the rule boards hanging out through these gaps on the
01:03:27wall just to make sure and of course we know that at France Michael Schumacher needed that sort of
01:03:33information he couldn't get it by radio although he came up with the ingenious method of using the
01:03:38big screens at that race course giving signals on the camera on board to his crew now Ferrari
01:03:45again Irvine certainly for a few races it would it would appear clear that he's the number one guy
01:03:50he will have most of the attention from the team but they're going to run two cars where do they
01:03:55stand there what might they do they probably won't run a second car I mean they have it's difficult
01:04:00there's so few drivers out there and I don't know who quite who they'd pick drivers that aren't
01:04:03committed to other championships but it is interesting to note here that apart from Mika
01:04:07Hacken who's doing a wonderful job of just sliding away at the front there that Eddie Irvine is
01:04:11actually making his mark and he's actually easing ahead of David Coulthard as well Alessi here again
01:04:16we have Alessi working on Barry Kello wondering just where he can get by and of course he might
01:04:22well be saying okay I better give up and I'll just hang in there and hope that I have a better pit
01:04:26stop than the Ford remember of course Barry Kello and the Ford is having a new lease of life under
01:04:31the Ford ownership doing a great job for them as well there's rumors of course of him going to
01:04:35Ferrari and the fact that he has already signed for Ferrari and Eddie Irvine has signed for Stewart
01:04:40but I find these hard to take at the moment a little bit of a wiggle in the middle of that
01:04:44last corner for Barry Kello who's running in seventh position this is probably the best battle
01:04:50on the track at least significant battle in terms of race position Irvine and Coulthard promised to
01:04:55be a pretty good dice for a while but then it has as you suggested broken off just a little bit and
01:05:01Mika Hakkinen at the front pulling away rather steadily and Hakkinen seems to be as
01:05:09it is comfortable a frame of mind as I've seen a driver in a good long time he just is really
01:05:15within himself all this weekend at the press conferences and everything he said dealing with
01:05:21the press dealing with his team always complimentary always cool calm and collected he really is acting
01:05:27like a champion a champion who now may be in a better position certainly is in a better position
01:05:33to repeat with the injury to Michael Schumacher here at the British Grand Prix rejoining perhaps
01:05:39just a little bit as Coulthard draws in Eddie Irvine just slightly over the last lap or so but
01:05:45it's going to be a while before he can have a serious look around the rear wing of Eddie Irvine
01:05:50Hakkinen leaves at Great Britain we'll be back in a moment welcome back to Silverstone I'm Chris
01:05:56McClure along with Derek Bell Mika Hakkinen continues to lead the Grand Prix of Great Britain
01:06:01he has since the onset second place belongs to Eddie Irvine then David Coulthard if you'd like
01:06:06to email us with your comments feel free formula1 at foxsports.net that's the address you need to
01:06:13use we're glad to hear from you and we will read each and every one of them the difference between
01:06:19Hakkinen and Irvine 5.7 seconds less than two seconds between these two fellows they're on the
01:06:25same piece of pavement almost at the same time Coulthard had been drawing in Eddie for a lap or
01:06:31two but Eddie has responded and I think did a speed up I really didn't check that part but the
01:06:36the gap between the two has grown just in the last couple of moments then you see Heinz-Harold
01:06:40Frentzen there Ralph Schumacher and then Damon Hill that rounds out the top six a good fight
01:06:46between Barrichello and Alessi was ongoing a moment ago and also Villeneuve and Zanardi
01:06:51further back in the field having a terrific battle for the 11th position Michael Schumacher
01:06:57had a horrible moment at the beginning of this race the initial start again we look at it Derek
01:07:02yes Michael is the second car of those two the two red Ferraris as he comes down to Stoke Corner
01:07:07pulling 190 miles an hour of course a full load of fuel on board or a certainly considerable
01:07:12amount a lot of weight on board as he comes inside Eddie Irvine he hits the brakes and
01:07:16the throttle scams wide open we're led to believe and he doesn't lose very much speed
01:07:20at all before he has a massive impact with that tyre wall and it tore actually tore the nose
01:07:25section off the car the wheels came off the car as well an awful accident for Michael
01:07:30but it seems that after all that he only I say only broke a leg and I would have thought rather
01:07:34badly of course they're getting ready for pit stops now this is what I think is a very critical
01:07:39part of the race you'll see Hacken of course is happily on his own but at this point David
01:07:44Coulthard wants to catch up Eddie Irvine so that when he has a pit stop he's right behind him he
01:07:48has an identical pit stop within two tenths or a second or so he can get out in front of Eddie
01:07:53so vital now for David to be close to him is so vital indeed for Lazy to be right behind Barry
01:07:58Keller when they pit stop and of course for uh Danitz behind Herbert because at that point you
01:08:04can get maybe out ahead of the guy in front that you've been following for a third of the race
01:08:07one more note as the Michael Schumacher story continues to be written he will be now we are
01:08:12told out for at least six weeks six weeks which uh would take up about three grounds free I do
01:08:20believe depending on how well his recovery goes exactly Ralph Schumacher is now going to make
01:08:27sorry should I say Damon Hill is trying to make some inroads into Ralph Schumacher because again
01:08:31he feels the way I do that he needs to get very close behind that Williams so that when he gets
01:08:36his pit stop he can get out in front of him this is a really good old dice going on further down
01:08:41the field there you see the retirements Michael Schumacher a well-defined situation De La Rosa at
01:08:46the beginning Gearbox and Badawer overheating after he had some contact and Marc Genet who
01:08:52started at the back of the field gives us our first pit stop look of the day the clock rolls
01:08:57the car is up the fuel is going in and the tires are already done it's actually a very good pit
01:09:03stop but of course they are totally outclassed they're an underpowered engine and of course
01:09:08the drivers are certainly in there having a learning curve one might say in Formula One
01:09:13almost three gallons per second go in at eight seconds uh from the time he stopped us not
01:09:19necessarily from the time the fuel floated but in uh about seven seconds of fuel I would think
01:09:25before he left the pit so about 21 gallons Damon Hill will be in shortly as we understand all of
01:09:31them will be a two-stop race for everybody that's the plan we've been told from all of the teams
01:09:39Barrichello and Alessi continuing to fight for the seventh and eighth positions
01:09:44Fisichella coming in Fisichella car is on pit road great camera there I love that picture following
01:09:51along with the car right over the top of the team on the marks he is it's incredible how quickly
01:09:56they change the tires about four seconds to get the tires done 8.8 seconds to get the car underway
01:10:05with the fresh fuel still a pretty good pit stop for that team and of course you can hear the
01:10:09rev limiter of 70 miles an hour as he goes up the pit road still riding with Damon who may
01:10:13well come in this lap as well keep an eye on that situation and this could be as we have been led to
01:10:19understand his final Formula One race right now running in the sixth position Takagi comes in for
01:10:26fuel and tires he was bumped by Badawer earlier no damage to his car Badawer the result of his
01:10:33bump was the overheating problem we think the two were tied together 8.2 good pit stops for some of
01:10:39the smaller teams ongoing so far Mika Hakkinen continues to tour out on the course in lap number
01:10:4621 of 60 so a third of the race has been concluded the pit window certainly open now they could take
01:10:55it out a little further that that corner it always looks like they're going to miss it and then
01:10:59at the last second Jean Alessi now on pit road he's going to want to have a really pit quick pit
01:11:04stop because he was if you remember on the heels of Rubens Barrichello he's going to want to try
01:11:08and get out so that on Rubens has his stop he gets out ahead of him because it looked like Alessi did
01:11:13have the legs of the four I have to admit good stop very good Jean eight second stop excellent
01:11:18stop let's now see what Barrichello can do when he comes in 8.3 and we'll do the comparison for you
01:11:25there comes Alexander Wirtz one would suspect Wirtz is on pit road he was running in the 15th
01:11:32spot when he left the track he finished third here a couple of years ago had a very nice day
01:11:37and his uh his door did close yes is he's not come up to expectations one has to admit this
01:11:44season not doing a good job at all but when the team is on a on a bad roll then of course things
01:11:49seem to go worse and worse and worse great picture of Mika Hakkinen there as he moves into
01:11:55and it's another actually yeah so he's going to go 22 laps at least now the full load of fuel they
01:12:01could go out to 30 most comfortably should they choose to do it that way the interval back to
01:12:07Eddie Irvine growing steadily two nine two eight between those two back there and again that has
01:12:17grown in the last seven laps or so it was down to about 1.4 Coulthard dropped back then drew up and
01:12:24then has been dropping back again from Eddie Irvine Hakkinen meantime pulling away continually
01:12:30from both of them not exactly streaking away he's 8.6 seconds ahead of his teammate six ahead of
01:12:36Eddie Irvine but that's a significant gap but Eddie's actually pulling it away even again he
01:12:41got up to 3.2 seconds now ahead of of David and David as I said earlier he really needs to have
01:12:47a good race today it's in front of his home crowd there's Zanardi coming in at this point he was
01:12:52having great dice with Jacques Villeneuve and one has to say that they had a bit of a coming together
01:12:56in practice yesterday morning when Zanardi didn't pull over to let Jacques by and there's a few nasty
01:13:01words said by Jacques to Zanardi and Zanardi said it's not very gracious I'm going to have a word
01:13:05with him as well I don't quite know what the outcome was but there's no fisticuffs I believe
01:13:09now they uh just the heat of the moment I think that settled down rather quickly
01:13:13we heard no subsequent reports about anything else having gone wrong now Ralph Schumacher is
01:13:19right over looks he's right up the back of Heinz-Hauer-Frenton really very very close
01:13:24indeed and Damon is in fact closing up as well there so this should be very intriguing to see
01:13:29just how their pit stops pan out pity of course we have to leave it to pit stops to decide who
01:13:33overtakes where but on this sort of circuit that is the situation invariably so they can
01:13:39compare to pit stop times between all of them from second all the way back to the final points
01:13:45paying position of sixth will be very very important Mika Hakkinen and his McLaren team
01:13:51have a little bit of a cushion and Damon Hill has pulled in for his pit stop running in sixth
01:13:57position Williams is getting ready for Ralph Schumacher he'll probably stop in next time around
01:14:04Johnny Herbert also on pit road we are told as we watch Damon Hill's crew finish up at 8.5
01:14:11yeah good average stop and he goes out just ahead of Johnny Herbert who is coming in
01:14:18so the other steward on pit road we watch the exit a long pit exit road here so they're really
01:14:23up to speed almost to Beckett's yeah they really are flying yeah they really are flying as you come
01:14:28out of the pits there you have to be very careful you don't whack into the car that's going by
01:14:32because he's trying to get your line into the corner or you should say you're on his line
01:14:36as he comes by you that's a good aerial shot of Luffield which is the corner before the pits
01:14:42the pit entry there you can see in the middle of the picture and a long chicane going into the pits
01:14:48which I guess helps them get down to the speed limit although several of them have had trouble
01:14:54with that over the weekend there were a couple of significant fines including one to Michael
01:14:58Schumacher of $2,500 on Friday David Coulthard is in with his McLaren brings it to a stop
01:15:07let's just hope he gets a good stop my goodness this guy needs some luck
01:15:11good stop very good stop yes seven and a half seconds that is good for David
01:15:18good service for him he didn't adjust anything and France Frentzen's behind in the Jordan he's
01:15:23coming in as well followed by Ralph as well now let's just see what happens here Ralph locking
01:15:27stuff up as he comes in there this should be probably a very very important very exciting
01:15:31drama these two remember running nose to tail they're dropped at the same time fuel off at the
01:15:35same time and Ralph gets it away what an excellent piece of work the Frentzen had a 10 and a half
01:15:40second stop not what poor Rod Heinz Frentzen wanted remember of course these are both young
01:15:45German stars and I know that Ralph wants to try and prove that he is the man and I have to admit
01:15:50this young man has been driving extremely well this year in a car that certainly isn't that
01:15:54competitive well a great stop for Ralph's team at least eight seconds or so as Truly comes down
01:16:01pit road in the Prost he missed some practice of Friday afternoon as they analyzed the wishbone on
01:16:07the car it had broken down in the morning and sent him careening off the track they were concerned
01:16:13that they had some sort of manufacturing problem so they checked it out before they went back on
01:16:18the track everything was okay now the leader Mika Hakkinen is on pit road and this is a critical
01:16:23stop of course for McLaren they did a good one a moment ago for David Coulthard
01:16:31he is the race leader in his eighth Grand Prix slow stop two seconds slower than Davis but
01:16:37really irrelevant when he's so many seconds in front but I did notice before we went to that
01:16:41pit stop that both the Jordans were both behind Ralph Schumacher and very close together on the
01:16:48road well we saw Ralph get by Frentzen with the better pit stop comparatively he also picked up
01:16:54hill in terms of track position and of the top six one is left to make a pit stop and that's the man
01:17:02right there Eddie Irvine Rubens Barrichello who's been in a bit of a dice uh in the last few moments
01:17:08with John Alesi's on pit road there he is and Ferrari coming in if I may say so this lap or
01:17:13Eddie Irvine first time I believe Eddie Irvine's ever led the British Grand Prix but they made a
01:17:17bit of a mess of that stop so that will not help Rubens Barrichello at all the fuel nozzle was stuck
01:17:23the guy had to rip and tear a little bit to get it away from the car Jacques Villeneuve is in
01:17:30and this round of pit stops just about on schedule at lap 23 24 or 25 not quite a third of the race
01:17:37a little beyond that but nonetheless what you would have expected Mika Hakkinen going by I think
01:17:44one of the Minardis I went out wide to let Mika through remember this really is a power circuit
01:17:49and these other cars with the lesser engines don't have a very good job and Eddie Irvine we understand
01:17:55is on pit road there he is so second place in the race actually leading at the moment but
01:18:01owing the race a pit stop is now in his stall tires going on take a look at the fuel man and
01:18:08see if it comes away cleanly we saw one a moment ago and 11 12 second pit stop for Eddie Irvine so
01:18:16that will not be good for him I have to say and we understand that maybe Hakkinen is coming in
01:18:20for an extra pit stop we don't know why what it was whether they're concerned here he comes
01:18:24whether they weren't sure a wheel was locked on properly or something but it must be something
01:18:28like that not what Mika Hakkinen wanted and could cost him the British Grand Prix victory
01:18:32well he had a six second lead over Irvine before the pit stops began he just got three seconds
01:18:37handed to him by Irvine's crew with a slow pit stop it's up in the air and it's a tire problem
01:18:43something wasn't seated correctly maybe it was a wheel that wasn't on properly and maybe he had a
01:18:47bit of a vibration but this is another problem you have they can't get the nut off they're still
01:18:51trying to get the nut off the wheel it's not working for them there he goes he's got it now
01:18:56but I think the guy that put the wheel on wasn't happy that he'd done the job properly
01:19:00having a job to get it I think what they've possibly done is cross thread it
01:19:03they're still not terribly happy but he finally did get it seated 27 seconds this time one would
01:19:12assume that Eddie Irvine will be able to go around and get that lead away well that's assuming David
01:19:18Coulthard isn't in front of him David Coulthard is ahead of Eddie as I thought because he had that
01:19:22long 11 second stop so David Coulthard does have the chance of leading the British Grand Prix and
01:19:28a possibility of a victory Eddie will be trying to remember two great British drivers in there
01:19:32trying to go for British Grand Prix victory so up to pit stop number one Mika Hakkinen leads
01:19:38then he has trouble getting one of the wheels affixed properly has to come in for a second
01:19:42stop and gives up the lead Coulthard gets a great pit stop for McLaren he leads the British Grand
01:19:48Prix on Fox Sports and that will be back with continued coverage after this
01:19:55welcome back to the Grand Prix of Great Britain at Silverstone that is the car of
01:19:59Mika Hakkinen without that wheel the track worker out on the racing surface to
01:20:06gather it up and get it out of the way Mika Hakkinen on the first pit stop of the day
01:20:11had tire trouble he brought it back in and they put a different wheel on and this is the left
01:20:16rear not the one we saw them working on earlier I don't think Mika's going to be happy with this
01:20:20because as he went down the pit lane he was swerving from side to side obviously the wheel
01:20:24is not seating on the back of that on the back plate and that's what he really needs and he's
01:20:28damaged it I would suggest and it was damaged from before as well because he was weaving his
01:20:33way as he went down the pit lane he won't be keen on doing 200 miles an hour with that lot I can
01:20:37assure you the safety car is being dispatched to the course the left rear is what left the car
01:20:44and I'm trying to remember but I it seems to me that was the left rear that they were
01:20:48they were well the camera shot I swear showed that left rear wheel that they were doing at the
01:20:52pit stop here it is coming off look at it he was lucky not to lose it but he stayed on just
01:20:57about the right amount of time but of course these cars run if once you slowed them down
01:21:02they run quite well on three wheels look at that wheel bounce and then come back on the track
01:21:09so Michael Schumacher with a crash earlier on and a broken leg away from the track all together now
01:21:15Mika Hakkinen approaching halfway in this British Grand Prix looking for the first
01:21:20win for McLaren since 1989 has difficulty with his wheels getting attached properly
01:21:26through the round first round of pit stops he's been in the pits three times and had
01:21:30different wheels placed in position and well back in the field he's all the way back to 17th
01:21:36now and we have one of the B.A.R. cars the field has stopped so he maintains his record
01:21:45they'll have to bring a pace car out for that yeah there's the safety car out anyway they've
01:21:49got to move him out from that dodgy place makes you wonder whether maybe he ran a bit low on fuel
01:21:54he's not finished a race this season absolutely dismal for him and he's actually been laying into
01:21:59poor Adrian Reynard who is the designer of the car and a major player in the team and I think
01:22:03rather unfairly Jacques shouldn't have given him such a hard time because Adrian does have
01:22:07other business including IndyCar to build he told he took Adrian apart pretty well last week and
01:22:13Adrian responded not in kind saying well we're still friends but we've had a chat but if there's
01:22:19some tension building there well there's often trouble when one of the drivers also happens to
01:22:23be a major player in the team as far as being a team owner or a percentage owner of the team I
01:22:27think it's pretty unfair now this is Ron Dennis the chief of the McLaren team as Jacques Villeneuve
01:22:34walks back with his rather unattractive beard I have to admit so B.A.R. continuing to suffer
01:22:42this season Zonta and Jacques Villeneuve having trouble finishing races altogether
01:22:46and that could cost them significant money here's Peter it's very important that B.A.R. get a good
01:22:52result at Silverstone because we're at the halfway point of the season and the travel money the teams
01:22:57are entitled to is up for review one of the 11 teams does not get that travel money but at the
01:23:02moment B.A.R. are in 10th place with Minardi pushing them very hard they need a good result
01:23:07here otherwise they will not be entitled to any travel money for the second half of the year
01:23:12well they're not going to get a good result out of him are they that's for sure you saw the engine
01:23:16expire remember they're running running the Renault Mechachrome super tech engine next year they'll be
01:23:21running obviously substantially better be running the factory Honda engines which should give them a
01:23:25tremendous lift but it will be the early days of the Honda engine no doubt based around the
01:23:30Mugen Honda which of course we see the Jordan's cars running so for the second time in the event
01:23:36we have the safety car on the course first time it came very very early and it was only for one lap
01:23:42and they turned them loose again this time it may be the same situation since the Jacques Villeneuve
01:23:48car has been taken off that straightaway and out of harm's way it looks like McLaren are getting
01:23:52ready for another pit stop here for Mika Hakkinen I think they are very concerned about that rear
01:23:56hub and I would be too those things have to either the lights are now out the pace car lights are out
01:24:01which means they're going to restart this lap Coulthard Novak's wonder if Irvine can make a
01:24:06move on on DC but David really really really needs a great race here today to pitch him back in there
01:24:13with the right credentials for the future look at Eddie he's right alongside David Coulthard as
01:24:18they come out of Luffield which is when the race is going to start here they go they took off a
01:24:22little earlier this time Hakkinen waited longer the first time they came up behind the pace car
01:24:27and Eddie Irvine goes right with David Coulthard but he was steady on the acceleration Ralph
01:24:31Schumacher now in third position after the round of pit stops and Hakkinen's misfortune is in the
01:24:38corner along with him not too far behind then Frentzen Hill and Barrichello that is the top six
01:24:42Barrichello sorry interrupting Barrichello having a real good look at the back of Damon Hill at that
01:24:46restart there's a good look at Coulthard with Irvine in tow and Michael Schumacher, De La Rosa,
01:24:54Baudouin and Villeneuve now the retirements usually not a high attrition race about half
01:25:00the field generally finishes big dice there and we have Mika waving around one of the Jordans in
01:25:06the back there he's thanking for letting him by but yeah I think it's a pretty brave move as he
01:25:12therefore goes just oh look at Barrichello goes by Damon Hill too wonderful bit of moving there
01:25:17a lot of shuffling going on and I think a bit of confusion and Damon had to move to one side and
01:25:21Barrichello went through a great bit of driving by Rubens getting back in fact where he wanted to
01:25:25be in front of Damon Mika Hakkinen gathering up some of the traffic about the restart moving up
01:25:30quickly through the field his objective first of course is just to get back to the point
01:25:35back to the points and try and save the day and so far no indication that he's going to make a
01:25:40quick return visit to the pits apparently the wheel problem at the back has been solved
01:25:46oh the fact he's done three laps in a row because it must have been more than so right
01:25:51he is one lap behind which of course means he's got a charge he was knocking in quickest laps
01:25:56fastest laps earlier on so we know the guy's capable of it he is driving so superbly this
01:26:01year and he's got that car really to his liking and look at Ralph Schumacher doing an excellent
01:26:06job as well he has got he in fact Ralph is lying in third place with the one lap behind Mika Hakkinen
01:26:13right behind him so we'll see how Mika works over Ralph Schumacher whether Ralph is kind enough to
01:26:16let him by nobody's kind in Formula One I shouldn't say that there are the two front runners Eddie
01:26:22Irvine trying to track down David Coulthard he's very very close
01:26:35Eddie Irvine uh Damon Hill right now in fifth position as we go on board with him one more time
01:26:42all of them working with traffic just a little bit Rubens coming right up on the back of Heinz
01:26:49Frenzel at this time as well he's really flying at this point the Jordans are going to have to
01:26:54look to their laurels a little bit remember Jordans have their slightly modified engine and they also
01:26:58have more horsepower and a better aerodynamic package this weekend which has been working
01:27:03very well in qualifying but Rubens is working them over at the moment in this serial of cars
01:27:08Mika Hakkinen is the fourth car that keeps going by but he is a lap down but he and he's running
01:27:14laps with the front runners probably a little bit faster at least when the opportunity presents
01:27:20itself but getting by those three and onto the lead lap then hoping for a safety car
01:27:26that's a tall order it is a tall order in Formula One but of course makes you wonder how easy it is
01:27:31going to be for these Eddie Irvine or Coulthard to let let Hakkinen go by and and risk that chance
01:27:37that maybe the pace car will come out let's ride with Damon all right we don't ride with Damon
01:27:41let's go back so we're at the British Grand Prix we're now well past half distance of David
01:27:48Coulthard looking for his first breakthrough of the year is the leader we'll be back
01:27:54Grand Prix of Great Britain the 49th running of this event there you see the front runners it is
01:28:01David Coulthard and Eddie Irvine next on the Formula One calendar the Grand Prix of Austria
01:28:07comes up Sunday July 25th at 10 a.m. on Fox Sportsnet Mika Hakkinen looks to defend his
01:28:13Austrian Grand Prix title from a year ago will he be there indeed please check your local listings
01:28:18Damon Hill will he be there we ride with him is there another drive in Damon Hill's future we
01:28:25just don't know but he's having a pretty good day here on his home ground at Silverstone running in
01:28:31the sixth position take a look at the standings as of the moment 39 laps done Coulthard Irvine
01:28:47Ralf Schumacher having a good day Frentzen Barrichello another good drive for him and Hill
01:28:53we just talked about him in the sixth position further on down the list Johnny Herbert doing
01:28:58quite nicely he's up from 11th on the grid Diniz, Fisichella, Zanardi still going
01:29:03Berts and Panis in the 12th spot
01:29:10one name we do not see Mika Hakkinen we already knew the first round of pit stops was a disaster
01:29:15we already knew that he'd lost a wheel as we get the Zanardi Ralf Schumacher in for his second stop
01:29:24yeah very early I might add makes you wonder just why well not very early but a couple of
01:29:28laps earlier than I would have thought but nevertheless great but he was running such a
01:29:32brilliant race so less than 20 laps to go and he comes in Johnny Herbert running in seventh position
01:29:40a moment ago gets his second stop concluded but Ralf Schumacher having a brilliant day running
01:29:46in the third spot got a great pit stop the first time around and another good stop just there Mika
01:29:51Hakkinen meantime has had a star-crossed day and as we now know will score no points in this British
01:29:57Grand Prix he is indeed no longer a contestant in this British Grand Prix already a lap down
01:30:03a few moments ago he just drove it not just to the pit but all the way there he parked it in the
01:30:08garage got out and said that's it there obviously was something not right at the back of the car
01:30:12I thought he was doing a wonderful job considering he didn't have the confidence to drive it past
01:30:16but back on the road it's about to liven up in my opinion because we have Rubens Barrichello
01:30:21working over Heinz our friends and again right down to the pit stop to Eddie Irvine coming in
01:30:25for a fuel stop as we speak this is so vital to Ferrari to get a better stop here as he locks it
01:30:30all up getting down to the speed limit hope he doesn't get penalized for going too fast
01:30:33let's see how quick his pit stop is can he get out in front of David Coulthard 12 seconds the
01:30:37first time they gave him service we'll take a look and see if this one goes a little bit
01:30:43does indeed 7.1 but he gave Coulthard nearly five seconds in the pits on the first round
01:30:49comparatively he may be in position to get some of that back maybe the lead who knows we will only
01:30:54wait and see now the pressure is on the McLaren crew who we know can do such a brilliantly
01:30:58professional oh look how close that was as Eddie comes out and he rams into a into the back of one
01:31:04of the Saubers and Lazy actually was running very well earlier on and latterly he went in for an
01:31:09extra pit stop that we didn't actually record we saw him in there didn't mention it but John Lacey
01:31:13having a problem earlier than we thought before he was Eddie gonna slip stream out and pull by
01:31:18is he gonna is the Lacey gonna let him by oh yes he did kept over for him to allow him to get a
01:31:23good line for the corner that is very gentlemanly a very gentlemanly move there usually you make the
01:31:28driver go down the inside and make it difficult for him to get a good line well he's he's better
01:31:32than a lap down in the race so he's not fighting for any kind of position in the race if he were
01:31:36on the lead lap you might understand a big fight into the corner but not in the position of Lacey
01:31:41now finds himself and Eddie Irvine now streams through and has a good opportunity McLaren is
01:31:47ready for Coulthard the first time he was in they gave him a 7.6 second stop will they be able to
01:31:54repeat that or better it we're about to find out critical moment in this British Grand Prix
01:32:02came in very gently a little bit slower I thought probably than Irvine
01:32:06remember their pits are right next door one to the other good stop six and a half he's still a
01:32:10second ahead of Eddie but let's see what sort of a lap Eddie had as it looks like Rubens Barrichello
01:32:14coming in behind for his pit stop at pit exit they will join the battle Eddie not inside is he on the
01:32:21straightaway is that the car coming at us certainly is and Coulthard is down at the end here comes the
01:32:25Ferrari Coulthard gets out first as another car pulls off onto the grass look at the gap boy that
01:32:31pit work for David Coulthard today has been magnificent and this time it has sustained his
01:32:37lead yes it's pulled onto the grass there looks like I think it's one of the Menardis out of the
01:32:42race but they were really lying dismally far down the Jeunet maybe I can't tell when the damage the
01:32:50car but anyway these two guys of course now stuck here are we going to see the fact in fact it was
01:32:55Ricardo Zonto but are we actually going to see Eddie Irvine now putting David really under
01:32:59pressure remember David's tires will not be quite as hot as that is but of course is the room to get
01:33:04so there you see the space about the same as what it was perhaps a little bit more but the key to
01:33:09the whole thing is that Coulthard came out in front from the first round of pit stops it was
01:33:15Irvine who went in after Coulthard Coulthard came down the straightaway and they met at the juncture
01:33:21of pit exit and the racetrack and Coulthard maybe had 20 feet on him came across his bow and had
01:33:26the position that turned in the first place once Mika Hakkinen had his difficulties now these two
01:33:32gentlemen both Brits one of the Scottish and one an Irishman both battling to win the British Grand
01:33:38Prix and neither of them have won it previously so it's really really something very special with
01:33:43these guys here in front of their home crowd both the number two drivers to do well of course Ferrari
01:33:48won it last year with Michael Schumacher but McLaren amazingly enough has not won this race
01:33:54since 1989 when Alain Prost was the pilot of the car there you see Heinz Harald Frentzen in front
01:34:02of him who is in fact in the lead of the race but of course he does have any other pit stop to make
01:34:08Frentzen and Hill owe the race a pit stop Coulthard in third then Irvine Schumacher
01:34:13and Barrichello so this will be one and two eventually unless the others have boxed us all
01:34:21with a one-stop strategy they came in after a third of the race was done it is a real stretch
01:34:29to make what was left when they came in on a full load of fuel so I suspect everybody is still
01:34:36on the two-stop strategy if the Jordans take another risk like they did at France I would
01:34:41be surprised we'll be back in just a moment welcome back to the British Grand Prix as we
01:34:47suspected the Jordans will indeed make pit stops and here is the first of them
01:34:54Heinz Harald Frentzen on the marks the clocks roll and the tires are changed
01:35:00Damon Hill sweeps by into the lead and Frentzen gets 6.8
01:35:06that time and is ready to go to the end next time around we expect to see Damon Hill has just
01:35:12inherited the lead unless he now gets on the radio and says let me give it a shot
01:35:19on a one-stop deal right now could be the time for Damon to pull in and say that's it boys I've
01:35:23led the Grand Prix I'm retiring he wanted to go on a high note this could be it Frentzen shuffles
01:35:29back as we suspected he would with the pit stop having been concluded but he's probably going to
01:35:35he should come in this lap and look at the fans on their feet yelling and screaming as Damon Hill
01:35:40comes around one more time just behind him that is David Coulthard look at the crowds look at the
01:35:47crowd is absolutely on its feet and screaming this is what they hope for at least in very
01:35:56very large part yeah well they don't know they didn't know what's going on in the pit lane of
01:36:00course but they do have these massive screens they'll know oh he lost a little bit going in
01:36:04there as you saw David Coulthard right behind him David not too bothered about David at this point
01:36:08more worried about Eddie Irvine well he might be more bothered if Damon stays out there he goes for
01:36:13another eight laps but no he won't he'll pit so that will put Coulthard back into the lead and
01:36:19Damon Hill gets his brilliant moment in the sunshine there still may be more before this
01:36:24day is done I'm not writing him off but he has given up the lead and that was in the pit
01:36:32Irvine into second place Coulthard up at the first
01:36:35and I think Ralph Schumacher probably
01:36:40yeah Ralph will be third if they won't make the speeds of their stops or not improve their
01:36:44position I wouldn't have thought because Ralph was very close behind these two although he's
01:36:48dropped back somewhat now so the shuffle at the top in terms of the points positions has now
01:36:56been concluded and everything came out just about the way it was with Coulthard on the point
01:37:02and Irvine chasing him so a great opportunity now at hand for David Coulthard who's had a
01:37:08frustrating season certainly coming into the race it was Mika Hakkinen by eight over Michael Schumacher
01:37:15they will stay where they are Irvine where he sits now would be tied with Michael for second
01:37:21Frentzen and Schumacher and Fisichella uh Frentzen and Schumacher would pick up some points and of
01:37:26course Coulthard who came in with just I believe it was a dozen let me double check my number yeah
01:37:3112 points as opposed to 29 at this point last year with a win at this point last year but looking
01:37:36for a breakthrough moment may have it in his immediate future constructor points would change
01:37:42considerably or a little bit if the McLaren stays in front of the Ferrari they would gain
01:37:47four more there are only one of each left in this event and it would be a four-point gain for
01:37:53McLaren Barry Keller again really very close to the Jordans at this point he's uh giving them a
01:37:59very good run for their money although no he slowed does it look like he slowed down or is that
01:38:03my imagination Barry Keller is slowing down I thought that of several cars on that angle today
01:38:11didn't say anything it turned out they weren't but it really is it uh well he was right behind
01:38:16the Jordan just now uh as he came around the previous turns and he seems to there's nothing
01:38:20bright but here he goes in the pit rubens is in something has gone wrong and we'll see if he like
01:38:27ahead of him they're just pointing to the right make the right turn here and into the garage it
01:38:31would appear I think he knows where to go he's got a flat he's a flat left front tire do you see that
01:38:38how unfortunate he was doing such a magnificent job absolutely magnificent job for Ford so the
01:38:44tires they go for all four of them set re-employed cost him six seconds plus slow down and start up
01:38:50and a points race may have just gone away from Rubens Barrichello dismal luck for him certainly
01:38:56allowing Damon Hill to get a couple more points they put him back up to fifth
01:39:02Rubens is right between the two Jordans prior to that Eddie Jordan Eddie Irvine
01:39:05here not doing an outstanding job against David David clocking in some 28s now 21 minute 28 laps
01:39:11as is Eddie uh quickest laps the race following uh Hamika Hatton who is running 28s as well
01:39:19so David Coulthard concludes another lap there's a good look at the Ferrari of Irvine there's a look
01:39:24at the top six in the British Grand Prix we'll be back in a moment on Fox Sports Net
01:39:30at the Grand Prix of Britain it is still David Coulthard at the point a great fight unfolding
01:39:35between Ralf Schumacher in third and Heinz-Erl Frentzen right there the race summary as we
01:39:41approach the end David Coulthard on the point having led 22 of the 60 laps Mika Hakkinen
01:39:48led the others lead changes four cars left 16 a little above the average at this point of the
01:39:56race but it's never been a particularly high attrition race anyway that battle is continuing
01:40:02to rage along and and you were saying Derek that Ralf Schumacher is just driving brilliantly
01:40:08with that car out there today there is the top six Irvine is in second place Coulthard
01:40:17the race leader Ralf Schumacher the fellow I was just talking about having a brilliant day
01:40:22with what is a an underpowered car but doing well with it then Frentzen in fourth place
01:40:27trying to get back to the podium once again following his victory last time out Hill in
01:40:31fifth he led for a short time to the pleasure of the fans just a moment ago and Pedro Diniz
01:40:36in the sixth position has fought his way up through the field to gain perhaps a point before
01:40:42the day is done you have to say just what a super job Ralf Schumacher is doing here
01:40:47you've got to realize that they are running the Renault Supertec engine it's some 80 horsepower
01:40:52down on what the Ferraris are running and probably 50 down on the Jordan which is running the latest
01:40:56Mugen Honda engine and that young man is driving a stirring job having seen his brother lying in
01:41:01a hospital bed carted off by a helicopter so the guy you know there's a lot of pressure on him today
01:41:06and he's out there doing it we consider poor old Zanardi is so far down the racetrack it doesn't
01:41:11really matter he's in 10th place at the moment admittedly having had a couple of extra stops
01:41:15but the luck hasn't been going for poor old Alessandro this year but Ralf has been eclipsing
01:41:20him all the way well certainly third place is at issue third fourth and fifth are not decided by
01:41:26any means Schumacher Frentzen and Hill is in the picture you keep seeing the other Jordan just as
01:41:33they pan across we saw it again they're all together on the straightaway here comes Hill
01:41:38now entering the picture back there he's just a couple of seconds back
01:41:41and certainly could pick up another points paying place and a better finish
01:41:46on the day that was supposed to be his final one in Formula One according to many reports and in
01:41:51fact according to what he had said earlier there is Coulthard and that is David Coulthard's
01:41:56beautiful girlfriend Hady a young American lady let me tell you I think from Michigan
01:42:01you didn't ask him I used to know that yeah David there he is going perhaps and Mika Haakinen
01:42:11now has changed out of his driving suit having retired uh half an hour or so ago after leading
01:42:17the early part and owning the weekend up until that bad pit stop and there is the battle for
01:42:22third this is Haakinen will not score Michael Schumacher will not score and the points are
01:42:26gonna scramble well I'm just about to say of course you know on the day that poor Michael
01:42:30has his accident Mika thinks he's gonna pick up a relatively simple easy victory here and
01:42:36escalate his points and he falls out as well that's just the cruel luck of motor racing
01:42:40of course the reason that Damon here is making such a move on the others is the fact that Ralph
01:42:44I think is slowing them up but holding his position and he's had some terrific lines and
01:42:51if you get it from him you're gonna have to earn it Heinz-Harald Frentzen would expect nothing less
01:42:55but Damon might get into the fight before it's done a little cross control right there as he
01:43:00corrects coming out of that corner and onto the front straightaway once again makes you wonder
01:43:06oh let's just uh we've missed lost him anyway makes you just wonder just what he must be
01:43:10thinking just now in his mind still is the fact is this really going to be my last Grand Prix is
01:43:14this my last British Grand Prix I don't see how you can retire just like that when you're in such
01:43:19a wonderful team as the Jordan team with the possibility of winning Grand Prixs well this
01:43:23has got to be encouraging and certainly part of his thinking his discouragement was the fact that
01:43:27the season was a mess now it's no longer a mess you can't quite see the new aerodynamic shape of
01:43:32the Ferrari but right at the back of those side pods the little flips that they put some extension
01:43:36on the flips of the side pods to actually take the air away from the rear tires the hot air and
01:43:41to draw it out of those radiators plus they've made the rear side of the rear that that body
01:43:46work behind Eddie's head they've made it more like a coca-cola bottle more like the McLaren
01:43:50to allow fresher better air onto that rear wing therefore getting less drag and better downforce
01:43:55and they were very happy with the testing a week ago here everybody tested significantly
01:44:00at Silverstone leading into this race they thought the new shape and the new motor that
01:44:04they went ahead and run uh the one that had won pole at Montreal they ran it in the race
01:44:09but with a new shape and a new motor still not quite enough to get to the McLaren no McLaren
01:44:15does dominate but we did say earlier and I have to say it again now that this is McLaren's home
01:44:19circuit they test it day after day after day Ferrari only test in Italy so Kulthar drawing
01:44:27away now in the closing laps looking for his first victory of the year and a big move in the points
01:44:32he's only got a few laps to go we'll watch all of those in a moment welcome back to Silverstone
01:44:39the British Grand Prix in less than three laps we will have a verdict Eddie Irvine continues to
01:44:45tour along in second place trying to track down the man you see in the foreground that is David
01:44:51Kulthard who is working his 58th lap of 60 in the event he's led well over 20 he'll not lead quite
01:45:00half if he takes her home with the victory but he won't care about that part of it the victory will
01:45:05be the big thing he was pointedly asked several times earlier in the week if he had to win this
01:45:10race he conceded it certainly wouldn't hurt he refused to put himself on the spot about it but
01:45:18right now he is in control of his own destiny and driving extremely well earlier in the day
01:45:25they tried to start the race it didn't last even a full lap as Michael Schumacher had a terrific
01:45:33crash at the fastest part of the course yes he came down inside Eddie Irvine in fact the red
01:45:37flag was already out of the pits to say that the race was going to be held up for one lap or a bit
01:45:42more time Michael goes through on the inside locks the brakes up and the throttle jammed wide open
01:45:47and went straight on without losing too much speed at all really a severe horrible impact and Michael
01:45:53was pretty badly hurt broken right leg a little bit later on after a bad pit stop they had trouble
01:45:59with the wheels and this happened yeah Mika Hakkinen's coming into Luffield to start and
01:46:04unfortunately didn't have far to run off goes the wheel straight and look at the impact it had
01:46:08bounces back across the road and that opened the door for others and they've taken advantage of it
01:46:13the stewards looked like they were going to have a very good day but things have gone a little bit
01:46:18awry for them Barrichello dropped back at a flat tire Johnny Herbert had a penalty so he's well
01:46:24back now look like they might both be able to get some points but they cannot and Ralph Schumacher
01:46:30there is uh running in third position a brilliant drive for him some terrific drives by some perhaps
01:46:38surprising contenders up front well you know Ralph has had he had a great drive in Australia was on
01:46:43the on the podium there and he's had some very good results during the season I mean excellent
01:46:47results and when you consider the Williams really isn't that competitive next year it'll be running
01:46:51with the BMW engine I think he's doing an outstanding job today probably the driver of
01:46:55the race in my book David Coulthard of course having a great lap as he starts his last and
01:47:00final run around here a very great historic moment for him 1998 San Marino 19 races ago
01:47:07he was victorious now less than three miles to go a couple of British subjects on the move here at
01:47:16Silverstone as we have David Coulthard on the point in the McLaren right behind him but too far
01:47:23back to challenge at this time Eddie Irvine in the Ferrari it will be a popular result in about
01:47:30a half lap from now whichever one does it is going to be a great victory and it is David Coulthard
01:47:35one has to say David as he comes through Abbey curve for the last time a brilliant bit of driving
01:47:40by him absolutely superb driving by David today you have to say he hasn't put a foot wrong should
01:47:45have won other races but had if anybody's had problems this year it's been David today there
01:47:49he is the crowd are clapping him as he comes around to negotiate the last so as he comes out
01:47:54here going to bridge and through the in the last complex what a great drive for David and the
01:47:58McLaren Mercedes five of the seven races this year he failed to score any points in two others
01:48:04as San Marino and at Spain he came second but first was not his not until today if he can
01:48:12conclude the final two or three hundred yards of this event the pit road is just to his right
01:48:18the crowd of his followers is to the left as he moves down the straightaway the checkered is out
01:48:24and David Coulthard has his victory in the British Grand Prix with Eddie Irvine coming in
01:48:29the second position a very happy moment for that man here comes Ralph Schumacher still being
01:48:35pressured in the final couple of corners by Heinz Harald Frentzen Damon Hill is in fifth and
01:48:41Denise in sixth we'll see them finish in a moment right now the acceleration one more time for
01:48:46Schumacher to secure another podium position his second of 1999 he has it look at the fist in the
01:48:53air from him now on board we go with Damon Hill again he is on the straightaway is this his final
01:48:59checkered flag with fifth place he has to be encouraged I would suggest he continued I would
01:49:05if I was him I wouldn't quit not on 10 million dollars a year and winning possibility of winning
01:49:11it's all in the head you know and his confidence may be back enough to precipitate that he started
01:49:18backing off from his earlier stance earlier in the week by Friday he refused to discuss it at all
01:49:24but now he may reverse his field Coulthard is the winner in Silverstone we'll be back to hear from
01:49:30them all in a moment welcome back to Silverstone the British Grand Prix has been concluded the
01:49:37verdict is David Coulthard is the winner his fifth career win followed by Eddie Irvine and
01:49:43Ralph Schumacher there you see those that were in the points seventh to Giancarlo Fisichella
01:49:48Barrichello looked like he might be in the points but fell back late and the rest of those that were
01:49:53classified in the event Mika Hakkinen still leads the points but he scores none neither does Michael
01:49:59Schumacher who was injured Irvine caught him and then the constructors Ferrari is still in control
01:50:05but by a yet narrower margin over the McLaren and Jordan picks up five points as well at the podium
01:50:12the top three steps about to be occupied by our men of honor at an incredible moment there's Heidi
01:50:18David Coulthard's lovely girlfriend David must be so elated he's had such a dismal year this year
01:50:24uh Ralph Schumacher done a magnificent job in my opinion the driver of the race
01:50:28and of course Eddie Irvine do a stirring job as the only Ferrari driver to finish
01:51:06so
01:51:25a very emotional David Coulthard takes in all the plaudits all the fans great moment for him a
01:51:31historic moment for him and of course congratulations from Ralph Schumacher and of course the trophies
01:51:37John Prescott our deputy prime prime minister and the minister of transport rather an odd job for
01:51:41him nonetheless well all the bits of hardware being distributed to the men of honor Ron Dennis
01:51:48on the left there to get the constructors trophy there's a look at at Eddie Irvine a very I suppose
01:51:54satisfying second place they came with a new package in a new engine and perhaps thought
01:51:58they were going to win of course the team set back entirely on the day by Michael Schumacher's
01:52:03incident on the first start in the stow corner down at the end but for those three a terrific
01:52:09terrific day and this is a guy whose stock is really on the rise Ralph Schumacher he scored
01:52:14in five of the seven Grands Prix this year well generally the younger driver the younger brother
01:52:18is always quicker we have yet to see just how quick but that boy is quick correct but I nonetheless
01:52:23feel so much for David Coulthard to stand there in front of your home crowd at Silverstone is very
01:52:28very special and this is a special moment too they all spray each other they spray unsuspecting
01:52:35folks who even try to hide behind the panels back there and that sort of thing but they really cut
01:52:41loose from that point forward at least for a while in a moment we'll be back to hear from the winners
01:52:46stay right there on Fox Sportsnet welcome back to Silverstone the press conference is being convened
01:52:53at the press center let's go there the top three finishers of the British Grand Prix David Coulthard
01:52:59Eddie Irvine and Ralph Schumacher David Coulthard your 1999 British Grand Prix champion how do you
01:53:05feel fantastic absolutely fantastic I um you know when I realized after my my team got me out in
01:53:11front of Eddie in the last stop that potentially bar keeping out of trouble I could win this one
01:53:16it was it was more nerve-wracking I think than at any point in my career because it's been such a
01:53:20long time since I had a win and um obviously with Mika out that the whole team is relying on me to
01:53:26score those points but nonetheless I have to say this this is definitely uh the best feeling I've
01:53:32ever had in my racing career to win this race I think is you know always has been um you know
01:53:38the one that I would would trade for any other win to win in the British Grand Prix so it's fantastic
01:53:42and it's completely down to to my mechanics today who both times managed to get me out in front of
01:53:47otherwise I think we were you know he was a little quicker at the beginning I was a little quicker at
01:53:51the end we're pretty evenly matched so whoever had track position was going to win this race today
01:53:57even better than that obviously the two main riders not scoring do you think these 10 points
01:54:00put you right back in the championship again well you know it's early days for that as well
01:54:05I tend not to look at the big picture of the championship because you have to take each race
01:54:08as it comes and clearly um with four non-finishers this year then it hasn't been going that well but
01:54:14to come back here and uh obviously you know you never want to uh to benefit from an accident one
01:54:20competitor so obviously I hope that Michael is okay and I'm not sure of his injuries but
01:54:25hopefully not too severe and um and for me it wasn't a problem
01:54:31Eddie you were going well there but you had a very long first pit stop what happened
01:54:35yeah it was the first time I'd come into the pits really with the McLaren guys out
01:54:38and I went past the McLaren guys and next thing I see my guys very very close to me and
01:54:43I wasn't going to get stopped really and I just go over a shot and I think that's what took them
01:54:46that little bit longer to get the fuel on and ultimately cost us the race you seem to be
01:54:50able to go a lot quicker actually in the race trip did you work on the car a lot since warm-up
01:54:54warm-up yeah we just tried something um you know we just tried to make the tires live longer but
01:54:59it just wasn't it was a no-hopper we persevered with it all morning but it was it wasn't going
01:55:04to happen so um we just went back to our standard setup now obviously with the uh the injuries
01:55:08Michael you're now likely to be team leader for a few weeks you're actually in the the world
01:55:12championship hunt how does that affect the way you look at the future races I don't know I um
01:55:16I don't know what Michael's story is I don't know I think I heard he's all right so he should be
01:55:21back in for the next race and there'll be business as usual what actually happened um on that first
01:55:26lap of the first race of the first part of the race well I got a better start um I got made a
01:55:31really bad one and um I was got a good I was getting a run at DC through the fast stuff and
01:55:37DC has a very different line from me through the second part of the fast corners and
01:55:42um I had to lift off and brake to avoid getting to the back of him and I went wide and then um I
01:55:48just come out um onto the straight Michael was obviously behind me and then coming into the
01:55:52stow corner he just came flying past me all four wheels locked and straight on um so I don't know
01:55:57whether he maybe damaged a wing on the back of my car whenever I had to brake because of DC
01:56:03okay we have a fantastic drive by you today but how easy was it for you to get back into the car
01:56:07knowing your brother had just been injured well I mean uh straight after the uh the red flag I
01:56:14asked what happens and I first didn't realize what happened and after I heard of Michael
01:56:18was uh having an accident the team obviously said me that Michael was out of the car and
01:56:23it was nothing bad but I heard now that he gets something broken I'm not sure what happens we're
01:56:28going to find out but um well he's for 80% he seems to be all right and that's the most important
01:56:33and then we look what he has and obviously he's not so nice and as your brother have an accident
01:56:38to go back in the car that's for sure but um at the other end you know I have a team relying on
01:56:43me and I have to concentrate on my job you drove a great race you had a long battle Heinz hard
01:56:47friends it seems that Williams has really improved this weekend yeah well I mean I have to say um
01:56:52our team or my team did a really great job bringing that new aero package here to the race I
01:56:57mean at Silverstone test we looked nowhere and suddenly we were a lot closer and especially the
01:57:03first pit stop I have to thank my pit stop crew because they did an incredible job and bring me
01:57:09out in front of Heinz and from there on the race went very good there they are in park fair may
01:57:17Ron Dennis Mika Hakkinen out of his driving uniform and the winner David Coulthard we'll wrap
01:57:22it up in a moment back here at Silverstone David Coulthard is our winner in two weeks we move on
01:57:29to Austria Sunday July 25th at 10 a.m. on Fox Sportsnet the email address if you'd like to
01:57:37write us formula1 at foxsports.net now on behalf of Derek Bell and Peter Windsor I'm Chris McClure
01:57:44thanks for joining us so long from Silverstone
