00:00:00...moments away from the start of the 31st Canadian Grand Prix, Michael Schumacher sits
00:00:06quietly in his car on the pole position, Derek, last year they had a devil of a time getting
00:00:11it underway.
00:00:12They had a job getting through the first turn, it was absolute mayhem, time and time again,
00:00:15nice clean start at the front, but look at this, look at Alexander Wurz flying across
00:00:20the sand trap, let's take another look from another car, absolute mayhem, this is a lazy
00:00:24getting tumble and look at Wurz going over the top and truly coming through on the right
00:00:28about to take him out as well, nobody was hurt and they then went into a restart, we
00:00:33nearly saw it all over again, here we go, Ralph Schumacher in the yellow car slides
00:00:36across the grass, slides around, nearly takes out one of the Williams, causing another chaotic
00:00:41restart.
00:00:42We had to have a restart, find spare cars, rebuild the other ones, look at this, two
00:00:46cars here, one on top of the other, terrible.
00:00:48Hopefully it'll be cleaner this year as we look as some of the engines are now coming
00:00:53on, the formation lap is just about to get underway, once around and they'll tuck into
00:00:57their slots one more time, but already the systems have been checked in reconnaissance,
00:01:02Jacques Villeneuve, number 22 with the super tech power in 16th grid position, very disappointing
00:01:09for them.
00:01:10Yes, he was, did a lot of running on Thursday, on Friday and Saturday and I really expected
00:01:13a lot more from him, he was showing great form all weekend, but really working the car,
00:01:17I've never seen anybody be so sideways for so long and get it back under control again.
00:01:22Rubens Barrichello, number 16 in the Stewart Ford just ahead of that, we saw Mika Hakkinen,
00:01:27I think all the engines have now fired, they're waiting for the signal to move around one
00:01:31more time and Barrichello has had reasonable luck on this course, there you see the field
00:01:36of 22 with the crews all pulled back to the side of the road now, what a beautiful, beautiful
00:01:41sight and the signal is given and Michael Schumacher leads the parade, once around and
00:01:46we'll have a race on hand, it's 69 plus 1, this is the plus 1, the formation lap and
00:01:52then 69 laps of racing.
00:01:54Now the guys will be relaxed, much more than they were before, they've had half an hour
00:01:57of fiddling about, doing this, doing that, doing the right things, in a moment or two
00:02:01they'll be up there, it'll be just down to them and their skill and ability to get them
00:02:05up and make a great race of it, all the nerves have gone, the adrenaline is up and they're
00:02:09ready for a race, that's what these guys have paid lots and lots of money for, let's just
00:02:13remember one thing though, it's the first official Ford Works entry in a Grand Prix
00:02:17this weekend.
00:02:19Given the option sir, what would you select as your free race strategy heading in?
00:02:25Well, we know that the tyres do not get worn out on this surface, I think it depends if
00:02:30Michael Schumacher can get away far enough in front, he may well be running a low fuel
00:02:34strategy, he may well, but it's really down to the start, how good a start can you make
00:02:38and that's what will determine what you do for the rest of the race, brake temperatures
00:02:42are a major problem, here we're riding with Damon Hill on the warming up lap, oh well
00:02:46here we were, and we're riding down to the casino hairpin, better line, well he's not
00:02:50at the casino hairpin, at the chicane, but he's doing a much better job with the line
00:02:54this time, he's got to keep that up in the race, but of course all this race is going
00:02:58to be up brakes, brake temperatures, the actual brake discs will run at about 2000 degrees,
00:03:031400 degrees should I say, absolutely amazing temperature, and the calipers will be running
00:03:09at about 700 degrees, and that is a tremendous difference, and of course they've got to get
00:03:13the hot air away from those calipers, the front of the field moving back towards the
00:03:18pit area where Peter Windsor stands by, yeah I just wanted to add something to that Derek,
00:03:21looking at the cars on the formation lap, I think we should really pay attention to
00:03:24Ralph Schumacher and Johnny Herbert, both went very quickly in the warm up, both had
00:03:28problems in qualifying, and they're going to be trying to pick up places very early
00:03:31on in this first lap, so let's keep an eye on them, back to you, so they move through
00:03:37the final couple of turns and onto the pit straight away, how important is that first
00:03:41corner Derek? Well of course it's two corners in effect, so it's absolutely vital to be
00:03:45on line for the first bit to get the exit right, because if you don't get the exit right
00:03:48by hauling the guy up, he can out-drag you out of it by getting better traction, so it's
00:03:52absolutely vital to get a clean start, Schumacher has been making better starts, so we'll just
00:03:57have to wait and see, but absolutely paramount, but you can see he is about 20 feet ahead
00:04:01of Hackerton already, just look at that, and that is, both men on the front row have considerable
00:04:06experience here, but the nod goes to Schumacher who's won three of the last five Canadian
00:04:10Grands Prix's, including two in a row, and Mika has a heck of a time just finishing races,
00:04:16we're on the circuit Gilles Villeneuve, on the Ile de Notre Dame in Montreal, Quebec,
00:04:21Canada, you're watching the Canadian Grand Prix on Fox Sports Net, and in just a moment
00:04:27when the last couple of cars tuck into their appointed spot, De La Rosa, Badour and Jeunet
00:04:33back there, the lights will begin to function and will be underway, you'll see a series
00:04:37of five red lights go on, when they disappear, we have a race, here they go, and we're away,
00:04:53swerving to the right is Schumacher, Hackerton crosses his tail, and tucks into second, Irvine
00:04:58making a bit, but it's not there, Coulthard did not get a good start, and we have a crash,
00:05:03already we have a crash, one of the students is out, that's very sad for them, oh, that
00:05:07really has ripped the wheels off that car, but look at, I hope that's not Jean Alesi
00:05:11off there as well, but it was a good start by the guys in the front, but they're so desperate
00:05:15to get by, and I'm sure they're going to have a red flag, and they're going to stop this
00:05:19race and do a restart, Panisse I believe is the one there, and Alesi also, in the Sauber,
00:05:26so, difficulty for him for the second year in a row, at the beginning, and a good start
00:05:31for Michael Schumacher, as he moved right over in the front of Mika Hackerton at the
00:05:37start, he really did his number there, and of course Eddie Irvine was behind, and he
00:05:40got blocked out by Mika, but we were expecting more from Eddie at that start I think, but
00:05:45what a fabulous start from Fizzy Keller there, he got ahead of David Coulthard, of course
00:05:49the front of the field continues to move through the course at speed, they're now in the hairpin,
00:05:55the tightest and slowest corner on the track, and look at the space that Schumacher has
00:05:59pulled away as they move off up the straightaway. Yeah, well of course, what he's got is, you've
00:06:02got Eddie Irvine who's giving poor old Mika Hackerton a pretty hard time there, so he's
00:06:07trying to block him out, and he's not really caring too much about the guy in front, we're
00:06:12coming straight through, they're obviously not going to have a stop, they're going to
00:06:15get the cars, let's just watch this start again as they come down into the corner,
00:06:18just look right in the middle there, it's right in that middle back, somebody loses
00:06:22it in the braking, there's no room for him in that cross, he cannot get in, he takes
00:06:25out the Herbert, and what a disaster for poor old Johnny Herbert, gets taken up from
00:06:30one side of the road to the other, but here we have another aerial shot, look at the,
00:06:33look at the Prost, he loses it coming into the corner, he loses it way back, cannot slow
00:06:38it down as they say, the track's dry but the grass is fast, and there was no room, he just
00:06:43went through and took poor old Johnny out. The Herbert, Trulli, and we also had a Lacey,
00:06:48Peter Windsor. I'm down in the Stewart pit, it was Rubens Barrichello, he was t-boned
00:06:52by Jarno Trulli, going very, very quickly, far too quickly, and unfortunately Rubens
00:06:55Barrichello is out of the race, he's getting out of his car, very, very bad damage on the
00:07:00left-hand side of the car where he was t-boned, Alexander Wurtz going past me as I speak,
00:07:03also into the pit lane into the Benetton, so that's two out, and Jarno Trulli I guess
00:07:07is out as well in the Prost, back to you. Alexander Wurtz also slowing down in the pits,
00:07:12and the safety car you see there has been deployed, so they've gathered up the field,
00:07:16no red flag, but they're going to slow them down, so they can rescue the machinery in
00:07:20the center corner. Now the very difficult thing here is for these guys to keep the temperature,
00:07:24let's just look at this replay, now you're watching the right side of your picture,
00:07:27look at this blue car getting out of shape, that's Trulli coming through, he was so involved
00:07:31last year, and here he is doing the same thing again this year, straight through and of course
00:07:34takes out poor Barrichello. Trying to put the power down, it looked as though the left rear
00:07:39left the road a little bit, and that may have been what kicked him off line. We might get a
00:07:43shot here from Jean-Alaise's car, this is the in-car camera on Jean's car, he's coming down
00:07:46here, we're just going to see what happens, because it's good all hell's going to break
00:07:49out in a second or two, as we come down into turn one, they're all driving pretty gently at the
00:07:54moment, but remember that Barrichello's on the left of Jean-Alaise as they go through, and that
00:08:00puts Jean on the grass, whoa, there he is, that's really done him no good whatsoever. And there's
00:08:05Barrichello trying to get back on the racing surface, he did come around, but as we heard,
00:08:10he has retired, and look at it from Damon Hill's car. Damon Hill's of course much further back,
00:08:15and he's watching the whole lot take place, but he didn't really see very much, it zapped across,
00:08:19and that was the end of it. A bit of a coachwork or something looked to fly right across in front
00:08:23of the car, but I don't think it is, a radiator, and the safety car is off, and we're going back
00:08:28to speed as the green is redeployed, good restart it appeared for Michael Schumacher, Hockanen and
00:08:33Tolden, Eddie Irvine, Fisichella and Coulitard, as they move through the center corner and up the
00:08:38hill, and a sequence of switchbacks, rights and left, before they get to the other end of the
00:08:42course, and the hairpin down there, very technical through here, flying corners in some instances,
00:08:47and very fast short straightaways in between. Absolutely, and it's very, very smooth,
00:08:52exceptionally smooth, but they have to ride the kerbs on these slower corners, which does seem
00:08:56to upset the balance, having watched them in practice yesterday and the day before,
00:09:00they really have to manhandle these cars around. You see the space growing a little bit there,
00:09:05among the front three, and then Fisichella at least keeping contact with Irvine in the third
00:09:10and fourth position, followed by David Coulitard, who was the odd man out to some degree at the
00:09:16start, he was shuffled back one spot into the fifth position. Yes, he was shuffled, but of course,
00:09:20David really has to make a break at the end of the straight, you can see him catching up Fisichella
00:09:24under braking, we know that the McLaren, look at him, he went up quite wide there did Fisichella,
00:09:29trying to get the power down, David has got to somehow suck in behind this car, but remember,
00:09:34he's now getting a tow off Fisichella, he's going to come down there, watch him pull out of his
00:09:37slipstream, is he going to go by? Yes, he's out beside Fisichella, this should do it for him,
00:09:42yes, overtaking him, lovely clean maneuver, very good bit of boot driving there by David,
00:09:46because he came out of the casino hairpin better, that's what you have to do before
00:09:50the guy in front's got his act together in his early laps. Sheer horsepower advantage,
00:09:54because he actually pulled out and got by before the top-end section of that straightaway. He did,
00:09:59but I saw David had a much better line out of, oh, look, here we have Wurtz, no, it's not that Zonta,
00:10:05Zonta's had a nasty moment, looks like something collapsed on the suspension,
00:10:09not a very dignified way to exit the race so early, we're
00:10:12looking for great things from these VAR cars, they don't need them braking so soon.
00:10:18Take a look at what happened to him, just wide on the exit and the back end,
00:10:22kicks out and crushes the Wawa, more than crushed it, he broke the right rear completely
00:10:26and had to pull off on the front straightaway, just opposite the pits. Yes, you can't blame
00:10:30the concession designer for that, that was total driver error, getting totally out of shape,
00:10:35of the course, remember he hasn't done many Grands Prix's and he's been out since he cracked
00:10:38his foot up, so he's probably a little bit over-enthusiastic, that will not please Craig
00:10:42Pollock. Well, it's not my job to make excuses, but we do know that he had to go to right foot
00:10:47braking in terms of his old injury from just before Brazil, and that may have had something
00:10:52to do with it. Meantime, Peter Windsor with Ruben Barrichello, information. Thanks, Chris,
00:10:57well I need to correct myself, I thought he was out of the race, he got out of the car,
00:11:00but the Stewart boys went to work very, very quickly, and they put a new set of
00:11:04tires on the front straightaway. Back to you, Chris. Zanardi was off in the Williams just a
00:11:10second ago, as we look on the front straightaway, the gap between Hakkinen and Michael Schumacher
00:11:16has been reduced by several car lengths over the last lap or so, Williams was off and turned
00:11:21backward, I don't know if Alex Zanardi got going again through the center here, can they go? Out
00:11:27goes the pace car, Chris, I have to interrupt you, that's not that I have to, Chris, there was no
00:11:30way they could lift that car out of that danger zone. So of course, out comes the pace car,
00:11:35and that's why the gap really between Schumacher and Hakkinen has been slowed down, that is Mika
00:11:39Hakkinen, the world champion's wife, there, here, watching very closely. So for the second time,
00:11:45let's take a look at what happened with Alex Zanardi right here. Yeah, he just didn't get
00:11:49into the corner, these tires are so difficult, he's finding it so difficult to adapt to this
00:11:53type of car, I just hope he doesn't have to get a reverse gear, because if that does seem to
00:11:57overheat the clutches, and then the lips are going to get wet again. This is David
00:12:00Coulthard's pass on Giancarlo Fisichella, great pass, he came out of what I thought the
00:12:06casino hairpin extremely well, got that draft, plus he's 80 horsepower more than that super
00:12:10tech engine, which does help these days. And so he moves into fourth position, Schumacher the
00:12:15leader with the safety car out, then Hakkinen, Irvine, Coulthard and Fisichella the top five.
00:12:20We'll be back to Montreal after this.
00:12:27Welcome back to the circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, Canada, the Canadian Grand Prix for
00:12:31the second time, under control of the safety car, Jean Alési in the red bull. Talking to
00:12:38Alan Cross, let me tell you, because Alan Cross, the team manager of Trulli, who caused the accident.
00:12:43So some words being exchanged there, perhaps a caution to Mr. Crows to get his driver under
00:12:49control. Trulli has had two bad starts here in Canada over the last two years, yet to complete a
00:12:53lap of competition, and it all happened in the same corner. And if Jean Alési is upset, I'll not
00:13:00blame him. No, I mean, I feel really sad for Jean, because we were with Salvas this morning, they had
00:13:04a lot of confidence, and I look at Alan Cross, he's probably explaining, this is chasing, they're
00:13:08looking to replan. Jean is very, very distressed about that move, not at all good. And of course,
00:13:13Alan Cross, you know, wants to get a good result as well, and he hasn't got anything out of this
00:13:17race either, so he's going to be pretty distressed. Alex Zanardi there, flashing across the screen,
00:13:21is at the back of the pack. He looped it a couple of laps ago, prior to the safety car being deployed,
00:13:26but it wasn't for him that it went out. It was Zonta's car, stuck on the right side of the road,
00:13:32opposite the pits, which is a place they just simply couldn't go and get the car out of the way
00:13:37without putting someone at risk, so they slowed everybody down. A prudent approach to that
00:13:42particular problem. Most definitely. I'm glad they're making these very quick decisions to get
00:13:45rid of the damaged cars, and under a yellow caution, because it is so dangerous. These cars are so
00:13:51fast, and I think it puts the marshals at great risk. Now, we've had an interruption of driver's
00:13:55rhythm, albeit short bursts of speed anyway, but does that favor anybody from an emotional,
00:14:01or an intellectual standpoint, in terms of the top four? It will favor somebody like Ralph Schumacher,
00:14:06who is trying to work his way up through the grid, and isn't doing too bad a job about it, because it
00:14:11means that he has another crack at getting by Herbert, who's just in front of him. Look at Trudy's
00:14:15face. He's really upset. I think the other Frenchman was giving him a hard time. I'm not surprised,
00:14:20Trudy. You made a real mess of that one. Trudy, you did. How about at the front? Same question,
00:14:26in terms of Michael Schumacher and Mika Hakkinen, as we look at one of the Ferrari mechanics ready
00:14:31for a pit stop, or some sort of work in the pits. Yes, he's not hoping it's going to happen just too
00:14:36soon, but thanks to some of the retirements, local hero Jacques Villeneuve has gone from 16th to 10th.
00:14:41Obviously, he's got to make sure that car finishes, because the other car isn't going to do much for
00:14:45the BAR team. Right now, they have to concentrate totally on trying to get these tire temperatures
00:14:50up. We've seen it before, that you start to lose tire temperature if you're actually running below
00:14:55a certain speed, and you don't want tire temperatures to go down, because if the tire temperatures go
00:14:59down, you lose pressure. You lose pressure, and the tire can come off the rim when you restart.
00:15:05You wouldn't think on a day like this, with the track service running at about 120 degrees
00:15:09Fahrenheit or more, that that would be an issue, but it is a delicate problem. We're talking about
00:15:15very narrow parameters, in terms of all the temperatures on a car. The safety car is expected
00:15:20to report off the track at the end of this lap, and they will turn the loose in full anchor in
00:15:26just a moment, we do believe. Michael Schumacher, last time they had a restart from the safety car,
00:15:31got a reasonable jump, certainly wasn't threatened out in the pit straight by Mika Hakkinen, and
00:15:36maintained his space for a couple of laps. The difficulty for the guys further back is, of course,
00:15:40there is this chicane that they're coming into now, and Michael will get the green as he goes around
00:15:44this corner. There it is, the other guys can't overtake until they get up there, so Michael has a
00:15:48real break on the guys behind. Let's hope there's no incidents back there. Woohoo, look at that
00:15:54Stewart, right up there, that must be Johnny Herbert. He is right up there, and amongst that
00:15:58Jorgen, giving him a really hard push. And we'll continue tracking Jacques Gagnon, who is in the
00:16:0310th position at the moment, as the green flags are waved all around, and nose to tail, a long,
00:16:08serpentine group of cars moving through, and uh, oh, we have Alex Zanardi poking his nose in there,
00:16:14trying to pick up a couple of spots. And Rubens Barry Keller, not prepared to let Zanardi have
00:16:18his own way, Rubens wants to make a point, and work his way back up the field after that disaster
00:16:22for him at the first corner, which was nothing of his own fault at all. Michael Schumacher in control
00:16:28after a good start, having dealt with a couple of restarts from the safety car, very nicely,
00:16:35they don't do that all that often, a little different than other forms of racing, but he was
00:16:39certainly up to the task, and so was Mika, Mika went pretty well with him, right off the chicane,
00:16:44coming onto the pit straight where the green was waved, I thought, surprisingly early, I was
00:16:49surprised to see it come out then, but once the safety car is clear, go ahead and race. Absolutely,
00:16:53no, I think it's a very, very wise move actually, because you have the men accelerating from the
00:16:57last corner, and then all starting and bunching up on the start finish line. It's very good to
00:17:03see Johnny Herbert doing such a fine job there, he's all over the back of Frenzen, and that is
00:17:07very good for Stewart. Remember, this is their first race as the official Ford entry in Grand Prix
00:17:12racing, great move for Jackie Stewart. The boys coming right out to the wall there, as they work
00:17:16their way early on behind, he's got David Kulta behind, he says some pretty unkind things about
00:17:20David and Mika Hakkinen lately. So eight laps are in the book, it is still Schumacher in front,
00:17:26and Peter Winter has tracked down, I think, an increment. Yes, I've tracked down John Alese,
00:17:31not happy, very bad luck, John, what happened? Not a bad luck, I mean, it's the kind of drivers who are
00:17:37very young, which is okay. I mean, I started, I was younger as well, but you have to be careful.
00:17:45We are driving, first of all, dangerous cars, because you can make something dangerous when
00:17:50you're driving from the one car. You make a bad spectacle, shows to the public, and you
00:17:55kind of think, because we look like idiots, we are not able to control ourselves.
00:18:01And these guys, we're doing that maybe twice every season. I hope now FIA will make a sanction
00:18:10to him, because in the past, some drivers have a lot, a very heavy fine, for a lot less than what
00:18:18he's doing. Thank you very much, John. Back to you. Strong words, Derek, asking for a sanction,
00:18:24one driver to another. Well, it has to be, because it's such a professional business,
00:18:27the only way is to hit them hard with sanctioning them. Just ticking them off with a little wrap
00:18:31of the knuckles isn't enough. Here's the battle down the racetrack, at least for a position in
00:18:35the points, and that is Coulthard all over the back of Eddie Irvine, and of course, it is the
00:18:40season-long riddle, can you pass once you get up to the car, and it is very difficult. We had Johnny
00:18:45Herbert back in the twisty bit, launching an attack, a fairly strong attack, against Heinz
00:18:50Harold Frentzen in sixth position, just ahead of him, but that broke off on the straightaway,
00:18:55maybe it'll be rejoined as they move back into this section of the course. Well, of course,
00:18:58Frentzen's also, he's doing a battle with Fizzy Keller, so Johnny's got his work cut out,
00:19:03because everybody's carving each other up here. McLaren engineers and engine people looking on,
00:19:10this is Schumacher, Hockenheim, a second and a half, last trip through, 2.3 back to Irvine,
00:19:16Coulthard just a couple of tenths in fourth place behind Irvine. I think the thing we have to think
00:19:21about here is, is Eddie, under team's orders, to hold up Coulthard, to let Michael get away,
00:19:26and not end up letting two McLarens get too close together, when it comes to pit stops, and give
00:19:32Michael that bumper that he requires. In the casino corner, the hairpin here, down to about 35 or 40
00:19:37miles an hour, and then all the way up to, sometimes, 203 or 405 miles an hour, at the other end of that
00:19:43long, long straightaway. Not the fastest straight in Formula 1 racing, but getting close. It is very,
00:19:48yes, the fastest is 219 miles an hour. I believe that's at Hockenheim, very, very fast indeed,
00:19:53but remember, these guys, if they didn't have all that wing on the back, and the wing on the front,
00:19:57the aerodynamics, they'd be doing 300 miles an hour. But, of course, the downforce slows them
00:20:01down considerably. Giancarlo Fizzy Keller holding on, under the attack of Frentzen, who's under
00:20:06attack from Herbert, so we have a great battle for 5, 6, and 7, I'm told. A couple of good racing
00:20:13battles that have shaped up for us, and at least can keep our attention, in terms of the points,
00:20:18whether they can do anything about those positions, we don't know, but, uh, I tell you, it's fun to
00:20:23watch in regards to that. Yeah, absolutely, they're right. Remember, this is a long race, so they're
00:20:27stepping into the groove, they're not going to go too crazy. And Eddie Irvine looked at me a little
00:20:32loose as he moved to the right through that corner, the back end stepping out ever so slightly, it
00:20:37appeared to me. Schumacher set the fastest lap at a 1.22, and last year's fastest lap was a 1.19.3,
00:20:44so he's a long way off, but remember, he has got quite a load of fuel on, assuming he's even going
00:20:48for a one-stop strategy. We're at 10 laps of the appointed distance, that is 69, and the casino
00:20:56hairpin again. This has been a diabolical corner through the weekend, and over the years, today.
00:21:02Well, the reason is, of course, is they come in there under braking so darn fast,
00:21:06and of course, they're trying to make up every time they can, and these cars have such short
00:21:09braking distances, they can easily make an error. Alexander Wurz is in the pits, and Peter Windsor's
00:21:14with him. Yes, Alexander, very short race for you, unlucky driveshaft failure. Did you see anything
00:21:19of that first corner accident? Well, I saw it, uh, I see, so, yeah, not really making exactly the same
00:21:25what I did last year. Uh, he was pushed to the left for all the drivers, and then he just wanted
00:21:29to avoid the collision, went in the grass, spun off, and, yeah, came back straight in the field,
00:21:34and this was the starting collision. I was lucky I came through, uh, without the problem.
00:21:38Unfortunately, half a lap later, my driveshaft broke by itself, so I couldn't, uh, finish.
00:21:43Thanks very much, Alexander. Back to you, Chris. Well, while we heard from Alexander Wurz, we saw
00:21:47a replay. That was Pedro de la Rosa in the Arrows, who got off line, but did get back to the racecourse.
00:21:53He's been off a few times this weekend. Yeah, he has. There's so many of them, he's sliding off
00:21:58the road and running across the grass, and actually not coming to grip at all, which is very gratifying,
00:22:02but the trouble is, this gravel doesn't seem to slow them down very much. We saw a terrible accident
00:22:06to Pedro Diniz on Friday, and he completely missed the gravel trap at Turn 1, and went smack across
00:22:12the road into the tire wall. See those numbers there? Eddie Irvine is beginning to draw away
00:22:16from David Coulthard ever so slightly. In terms of the top four, which is McLaren and Ferrari
00:22:22in various, uh, trim, Schumacher in front, drawing away from HÃ¥konen. They're all, uh, Irvine is losing
00:22:28ground on those two. Coulthard is losing ground on Coulthard. Of course, what you have to remember
00:22:32is that when David gets behind Eddie Irvine, he's getting a lot of disturbed air. He's allowing his
00:22:37temperatures to start to climb on the motor, and of course, he will lose a lot of downforce. Up to
00:22:4230% of downforce is lost when you get in the toe of somebody, so it makes driving pretty difficult.
00:22:47Interestingly enough, and I guess in a sense helping track what could be entire story here,
00:22:52we have lost some track temperature, about four or five degrees, since the beginning of the race.
00:22:58Not significant yet, but the temperature is dipping a bit. Yeah, and it won't make much
00:23:02difference for quite some time. It's mighty hot out. Yes. You can see Zanardi's not doing very
00:23:09much of coming through. Poor old Alex is having a pretty tough time in Formula 1 this year. We
00:23:13really hoped and wished he would do better. Good look at Johnny Herbert there, and there is Zanardi
00:23:19trying to work his way up from the back of the field, but at the point, it is still Michael
00:23:23Schumacher looking for his third victory of the season. Welcome back to the Grand Prix of Canada
00:23:32on the Cirque du Soleil in Montreal, where Michael Schumacher is still setting the pace, and we have
00:23:38a great battle going for third. Keith Olbermann and Kevin Frazier bring you all of the day's scores,
00:23:44highlights, and breaking stories. It's nightly at 10 p.m. on Fox Sportsnet. Please check your
00:23:49local listings. Still a good battle, Derek, for the third and fourth position, Irvine and Coulthard.
00:23:55It's drawn apart a little bit, then it'll go down under braking, and back and forth they go.
00:23:59They're giving us the best fight in the points. I have to say Giancarlo Fisichella's doing a
00:24:05magnificent job down there in fourth place. I mean, a fifth place, should I say. Absolutely
00:24:10superb job, considering they've had such a lurid year so far, but remember, he was third two years
00:24:15ago, he was second last year, and the other night he said to me, why can't I be first this year? But I
00:24:19think that's a bit of a dream, but this has been a race of attrition over the years, so we'll have to
00:24:23wait and see on that. So in that regard, we're still on the low end of things. We've lost a few cars,
00:24:27but not so many so far. Now, Michael Schumacher had set a fast lap of the race early on. HÃ¥konen,
00:24:32two laps ago while we were away, beating just a little bit, and then Schumacher has jumped back
00:24:38with an answer just a moment ago, speeding up after HÃ¥konen speeded up. His pits surely told
00:24:44him that. Meantime, we're seeing a pit sign there. What do you anticipate? What are you starting to
00:24:50think about in terms of pit strategy there? Well, I think Michael is not going to want to come in
00:24:54before the McLaren. There's no way is he going to want to make an extra pit stop with only that
00:24:59short amount of time. He's not doing quick laps at the moment, relatively speaking. He's still a
00:25:03couple of seconds off what they did last year, and what they really were running in practice. He was
00:25:07doing 19s in practice, so why should he go in? He must be running a heavy fuel load. I'm sure of
00:25:12that. Enough to do one stop. Vettel will do it, so why not make the cut? Damon Hill pulling off
00:25:16with the wheel loose. Suspension looks like it might have broken at the back end of his.
00:25:20Benjamin Hedges, Jordan. Damon is having a very, very poor year. A lot of people saying,
00:25:24is he going to retire? He says he isn't, but I think he's having a really tough time. He'll
00:25:28have to sort of think, I've got to get my act together soon. And he shuffled back in the
00:25:33standings. He was 15th when it broke, now 17th as Zanardi got through. He just went wide on the
00:25:38corner, similar to what a couple of others have done yesterday, and he bumped into the wall,
00:25:42and off she goes. It's a very polite way of saying he lost control of the car, actually.
00:25:46Chris, I thought he lost it big time, and went towards having solid. And he's gotten across
00:25:51the track, it appears, to his pit, finding a space in the traffic. In time, Josh Villeneuve
00:25:56continues to move along. He is running in 10th position at the moment. He's taken advantage of
00:26:01some of the attrition, and a couple of passes to move up. And he's nice, because he just took over
00:26:06Damon. Well, he will be, momentarily. Let's go back to Peter Windsor with more on Rubens Barrichello.
00:26:11I'm in the Stewart Garage, and the bad news is that it looks as if Rubens Barrichello's out of
00:26:15the race. It's a great problem related to that first corner accident. We didn't think he was
00:26:20going to last long, but they made a good effort, I think, to get him back into the race. But
00:26:23Rubens Barrichello driving slowly around into retirement. So we have six retirements now,
00:26:29adding Barrichello to the list that was added to just a moment ago by Hill. In time,
00:26:34Rubens Barrichello, you can see something flapping on the side pile on the left side.
00:26:39He got hit, didn't he, in that accident at the start? So, consequently, he put a lot of
00:26:44racer tape on, I would say, on that left-hand panel there, and something's wrong with it,
00:26:48and it's giving him a hard time, you know, it's just damaging the car. The car is too damaged
00:26:52terminally. 16 laps are now official. Schumacher continuing to lead, now by a 3.1 second margin
00:27:00last time out in the front straightaway against Haakonen, then Irvine, Coulthard, and Fisichella.
00:27:04Heinz-Errol Trentzen holding on to 6th and the last points of K position, and here comes
00:27:11Barrichello in. It's the first time that Michael has actually got into the 21,
00:27:151 minute 21 group, and he's actually lapping half a second quicker. Poor old Rubens goes
00:27:20straight in the garage. We were really expecting much greater things today from that car,
00:27:24but it wasn't there for him. We saw him coming in this morning, parked right next to him,
00:27:30and he was in a very, very good, nice frame of mind coming into the race.
00:27:33Too bad he didn't get to race. Well, exactly. When the guy has come on, he's stuck in Formula 1,
00:27:39as he said this morning, he said, I've always had the confidence I can do it. Now Stewart
00:27:43has delivered me a car that I can operate and produce results, and he's done just that this
00:27:47year. And we did see that an oil flag, I believe it was, displayed at the exit of the final turn
00:27:53onto the pit straightaway, warning these fellows, Irvine and Coulthard, who were 8th down in their
00:27:58battle for 3rd and 4th position. Hakkinen is pulling away from Irvine farther, and I'm not
00:28:04sure if team orders are in effect, especially if they care about being pulled away from Irvine.
00:28:11Well, I'm not going to argue with you, but I'm sure Eddie's doing his best, but he was so much
00:28:15faster the whole weekend, and I don't see why he can't turn it on now. I think there is something
00:28:19in there. He's just holding David up enough, not letting him go by, and that means he has to drive
00:28:24very, very sort of cautiously. And the unofficial report from Jordan is that Damon's suspension
00:28:31did indeed collapse, as they've said. It did after it hit the wall, that's for sure. In the hairpin,
00:28:36you can see about three car lengths to space, and the Ferrari darts away, expanding the lead out,
00:28:41and Fisichella now just exiting in the distance there, off the hairpin. This is a magnificent
00:28:47straightaway. A little bit of ripple in the pavement here and there. You've got to fight
00:28:50somewhat to keep the cars from wandering, and then hard braking here, and they only have about 125 or
00:28:5630 meters. There you see the flag warning the drivers that it's not a perfectly clean race
00:29:01track just yet. The problem is, it's that Jordan car, and I think they should move that. I think
00:29:06it's very, very dangerous to leave it there, because if one of these guys did a Hakkinen,
00:29:09as he did in San Marino, he could flick one way, flick the other, and go straight into that,
00:29:14and I was terrified of running into a parked car.
00:29:17Right, Seryl Frentzen has won Canada five times in the past, with just a few car lengths,
00:29:22in the center corner against Johnny Herbert, who right now is having a very nice outing, and
00:29:27he's a fellow who's fought some gremlins and demons this year as well.
00:29:31He certainly has. He's had a pretty tough time, and Barry Keller, of course, has sort of dominated
00:29:35the team, has taken the team, carried it on his shoulder, and now down to Jolly to prove that he
00:29:39is the man.
00:29:43Peter Windsor has tracked down a disappointed driver by the name of Barry Keller.
00:29:47Ruben, very, very bad luck. Can you tell us about that first cornering?
00:29:51I don't think it's bad luck. I just think it's bad driving, really, because
00:29:55it is someone that caused an incident last year as well, and, you know, I'm there. I was,
00:30:03I lost a little bit of a pace because David moved onto the middle of the track, so I backed off.
00:30:08My car is very fast. You can see now, the car is completely out of shape right now,
00:30:12and I was still overtaking, but then, finally, I had a problem with the column,
00:30:16but that is stupid driving, really, because it's, I mean, it put me out of the race. I was in
00:30:21competition for a podium, and it's bad driving. I hope there is a penalty, really.
00:30:26Very disappointed, Ruben. Back to you, Chris.
00:30:28And the second driver calling for a penalty. I think the next driver's meeting,
00:30:32whether with the fishes or in private, is going to be a little bit fiery, isn't it?
00:30:36Yeah, well, it has been a lot this year, and it's going to be now this one, certainly. I mean,
00:30:40you can't get away with not completing one complete lap of the Grand Prix over two years.
00:30:44That's a pretty bad indication, or good indication, that you're not driving very intelligently.
00:30:49We're watching Johnny Herbert trying to overtake 9th Harold Frentzen, that 6th and 7th position.
00:30:54The yellow car, number 8, is Frentzen, and then Herbert in the white,
00:30:58number 17. Now, two years ago, Johnny Herbert was in the points,
00:31:02on this racetrack, with a 5th position.
00:31:04Yes, he's had some very good races, Johnny. He's a very experienced driver,
00:31:07and given the right equipment, he can do the job. There's Jacques Villeneuve.
00:31:10He's chasing down, back way down the grid, unfortunately, but he's still doing a fine job.
00:31:15You can't work wonders, as they say. You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear,
00:31:19and that's what he's got to do with that VAR car.
00:31:21I haven't heard that one in a while. I've used it some years ago.
00:31:25Are we dating each other here? Villeneuve has had trouble in this corner,
00:31:30but then again, that corner is difficult for everybody.
00:31:34Michael Schumacher, at the point, last time through, led Mika Hakkinen by 3.2,
00:31:39as he concludes his 20th lap. It's now down to 2.8,
00:31:43so Mika drew him in just a little bit. I don't know if that was due to traffic or not.
00:31:48No, I think that was just genuine, you know, the way things are.
00:31:51Mika's turning on the screws a bit more. He did record the quickest lap of the race so far,
00:31:55with a 21.4, so he's putting the screws a little bit on Michael Schumacher.
00:31:59Meanwhile, as his wife, Erija, looks on from the background in the McLaren pits.
00:32:04Well, one would think that if they're looking at a two-stop strategy and started the car light,
00:32:09they're approaching the window where that first stop should come.
00:32:13They could begin to consider that.
00:32:16Mika Hakkinen down through, running in second,
00:32:19trying to run down Michael Schumacher and has gotten a fast lap.
00:32:22There are the standings after 20 of 69 laps at the Canadian Grand Prix.
00:32:27We'll be right back.
00:32:31Welcome back. I'm in the Red Bull Sauber Garage.
00:32:33A few mechanics sitting around, unfortunately.
00:32:35A legacy of Toyota's first lap retirement.
00:32:38Not the only driver to be out of that first corner incident.
00:32:40But the race now has reached a very interesting stage.
00:32:42We have Schumacher and Hakkinen delicately poised,
00:32:45and we have Johnny Herbert, Ralph Schumacher and Pedro Diniz
00:32:48making up for very poor qualifying positions and looking very strong.
00:32:51Derek, we've got this very interesting battle at the front.
00:32:53Let's take a punt on fuel loads.
00:32:55Do you think Schumacher and Hakkinen are running the same fuel loads?
00:32:58I'm pretty confident, Peter, that they're running exactly the same fuel loads.
00:33:01And I have a feeling they're only going to do a one-pit stop
00:33:03because just judging by the times that they're turning in,
00:33:06I think that that's the way they should run this.
00:33:08There'll be no problem with tyre wear, that's for sure.
00:33:12The space between Schumacher and Hakkinen has been trimmed back to 2.6.
00:33:17It was over three just a few laps ago before we took our break.
00:33:21Hakkinen set a fast lap a few moments ago.
00:33:25Tenths or so quicker than Schumacher's earlier,
00:33:27so they've swapped that distinction back and forth.
00:33:30But the inexorable part of that drama is that Hakkinen is trimming it away lap by lap.
00:33:35He's put together a succession of them.
00:33:37Yeah, I mean, three fastest laps in a row I think tells you exactly what it's about.
00:33:41They had a lot of problems during practice getting this McLaren to work.
00:33:44Mika's never gone that well here, but here he is, you know, doing a pretty good number.
00:33:47We have no idea what's going on that little red box across the road
00:33:50and what they're telling Michael and how they're discussing the strategy.
00:33:53But I can't believe that Michael's going to come in unless Hakkinen comes in,
00:33:56because Michael cannot get away from Hakkinen,
00:33:58so there's no point in him coming in for a short and sharp load of fuel.
00:34:03Now, the window would be open about now for a two-stop race,
00:34:06and Michael has responded again with a fast lap as the car lightens up.
00:34:11One minute, 20.920.
00:34:13So he's getting a little closer to that 1.19 fast lap that he set last year.
00:34:19Yeah, one of the arrows popping in for one of his stops.
00:34:21Fella Rosa.
00:34:22Yeah, he's on a two-lap strategy, obviously.
00:34:25So he'll get his first service, and with about 15 to 18 people,
00:34:29I haven't counted this particular pit stop crew,
00:34:32but he's at seven, eight, or so, nine,
00:34:34a slow pit stop as they're waiting for the fuel, I believe,
00:34:38and as he's shut it off.
00:34:40There's a problem at the back of the car there.
00:34:43Is it stuck in gear?
00:34:44He can't get a gear, I think that's his problem.
00:34:46He's stuck between gears.
00:34:47So up to 22 in this pit stop is a disaster for Pedro de la Rosa in the arrows.
00:34:53And once they've been there that long,
00:34:54that means that the old clutch and gearbox is getting a little bit too hot.
00:34:57Nothing like the old box with a manual shift.
00:35:00You could just knock it into another gear with your hand.
00:35:03They've withdrawn the flag on that corner, and the car is still there,
00:35:06and Peter is with Damon Hill.
00:35:08Damon, you hit the wall.
00:35:10Was it that simple?
00:35:10Did it look that simple?
00:35:12Yeah, I lost it on the way into the corner,
00:35:14and it got crossed up on the exit,
00:35:15and hit the wall.
00:35:18Is this indicative of track conditions changing, anything like that?
00:35:22I think it's slightly a prod out to the back.
00:35:26Everyone's chopping the chicanes, and there's mud everywhere.
00:35:29But I mean, I knew that was there, so I don't really have any excuses.
00:35:32I shouldn't have lost control of the car.
00:35:35Very honest, Damon Hill.
00:35:36Back to you.
00:35:37Johnny Herbert in the pits, got decent service.
00:35:409.5, not as quick as the front runners,
00:35:42but he's out in a way, so he drops back, at least momentarily,
00:35:46from what was the 7th position.
00:35:4810th as he got out of the pits.
00:35:50He may give up a space or two more before he gets to speed.
00:35:52He's come out in front of Takagi.
00:35:57Takagi a couple, three seconds behind him.
00:36:00Michael Schumacher there, as he works his way back to the pit.
00:36:04He's actually pulling away now, Chris.
00:36:06He's starting to put a bit of pressure on,
00:36:07as they get a third of the way into the race.
00:36:10But we just did a lap of 1 minute 21.
00:36:13That's your 120.6, I believe, is the right figure.
00:36:15So he is getting down there.
00:36:17You know, they just trade fastest laps, these guys.
00:36:20They just have that ability to go that little bit faster.
00:36:22Great in-car shot with Frenzel.
00:36:23Let's ride with him.
00:36:40Oh!
00:36:51Coming up to turn 1.
00:36:53Great bit of in-car stuff there.
00:36:55That was Frenzel.
00:36:55He just shows you, they get up to that terminal speed of 200 miles an hour.
00:36:59And for some 200 or 300 yards, he sat there with a sheer block of air
00:37:03against that aerodynamics,
00:37:04would not allow him to go any faster than 200 miles an hour down that straight.
00:37:07Just shows how much downforce they have,
00:37:09considering they've got 750 horsepower.
00:37:11Michael Schumacher did another quick lap at 120.781.
00:37:15And he is now pulling away from HÃ¥konen once again.
00:37:18Take a look at the interviews.
00:37:213.6 between first and second.
00:37:23HÃ¥konen trying to chase him down.
00:37:25Second to third, another almost eight seconds
00:37:28back to the other Ferrari of Eddie Irvine.
00:37:31And the space between Irvine and Foultard
00:37:34has been stable for about four or five laps at about two and a half seconds.
00:37:37Yeah, yeah, Eddie is managing to break away a bit from David,
00:37:39but I think David's settled down the fact
00:37:41that he's not going to do anything dramatic at this stage of the race.
00:37:44Settle in and let all the temperatures cool down.
00:37:49Mika HÃ¥konen lapping again slower than Schumacher last trip around.
00:37:53Michael wasn't as quick as he had been the previous turn,
00:37:56but neither was HÃ¥konen.
00:37:58So the space remains about the same between them.
00:38:01I think what...
00:38:02Sorry, Chris.
00:38:02I think one thing we must consider as well,
00:38:05these guys have been out in two days of practice.
00:38:08The first day, Friday, they're setting up the cars for the race today,
00:38:11and Saturday, they're setting the cars up for qualifying.
00:38:14And poor old HÃ¥konen had a lurid time on Friday getting the car right,
00:38:18and they've never really done more than five or six laps at any one time.
00:38:21And here they are out there now, and they're doing 25 laps.
00:38:24Characteristics in the car and chassis take over
00:38:27and can alter the situation considerably.
00:38:29Right, Ron Dennis had expressed late yesterday
00:38:32some concern because of that about what they call soaking heat,
00:38:35the heat enveloping the car as the day wore on,
00:38:39something they hadn't done,
00:38:40and whether any systems might malfunction as a result of that,
00:38:44because frankly, they hadn't faced that problem this entire season.
00:38:47No, because it's the hottest race of the year.
00:38:49But I think we'll point out once more that there are four occasions on this track
00:38:53in a period of one minute, 20 seconds,
00:38:55that they're doing 185 miles an hour,
00:38:56and they go down as low as second or first gear.
00:38:59That puts a tremendous amount of heat into the brakes and the rest of the systems.
00:39:03Yeah, somewhere, uh, well over a thousand degrees centigrade or Fahrenheit,
00:39:08whatever you care to consider,
00:39:09as Michael Schumacher moves through ahead of HÃ¥konen.
00:39:13And now he's almost a turn ahead at lap number 27.
00:39:17Really driving off is Michael Schumacher,
00:39:19and that's really because HÃ¥konen's slowing down.
00:39:22His performances lap by lap have dropped off.
00:39:25Michael's have remained relatively stable in the high one minute, 20 second area.
00:39:30Well, Michael, as you say, keeping that pace up,
00:39:32and Mika is not able to do so at the moment,
00:39:34remembering, as we said earlier,
00:39:36that Mika didn't have such a good Friday.
00:39:38Michael had a good Friday.
00:39:39And if you get those extra laps on the track with your ideal setup,
00:39:42you're going to be leaps ahead in the race.
00:39:44In fact, Michael was beaming as much as he beams
00:39:48after the Friday free practices,
00:39:49just because he felt they had the race set up,
00:39:52they really wanted to,
00:39:53and then they moved from there into the qualifying mode,
00:39:56with new qualifying engines, mind you,
00:39:58for both he and Eddie Irvine,
00:39:59and that paid off.
00:40:00They brought a lighter and slightly more powerful engine in on Wednesday,
00:40:05used them yesterday,
00:40:06and then put race motors back in.
00:40:07Yes, I talked to the engineers yesterday.
00:40:09Some of my old engineers are working at Ferrari,
00:40:11and they said that they, uh,
00:40:13they're in fact, uh,
00:40:14will be using that engine with some considerable time left.
00:40:17Fisichella continues to run in the fifth position.
00:40:20He has now got a 4.7 gap back to Heinz-Harald Frentzen,
00:40:24and Ralf Schumacher continues to sit in seventh.
00:40:27Of course, none of those at the top seven have made a pit stop yet.
00:40:31And if you do some simple arithmetic based on some averages
00:40:35that aren't necessarily right spot on in terms of team to team,
00:40:39the window for a one pit stop race is due to open
00:40:42in about maybe five laps or so.
00:40:45Yeah, that'll be the time when they'll come in.
00:40:47And of course, as we've said on many occasions before in Grand Prix racing,
00:40:50the longer they can stay out,
00:40:52the less amount of fuel they put in,
00:40:53therefore the shorter the pit stop.
00:40:55So you don't know how much fuel Michael's got in there,
00:40:57and he might have carried a bit more than what we call half tanks.
00:41:00Remembering that these tanks actually do hold 26 gallons,
00:41:04but for the race you require 38 gallons.
00:41:07So nobody could go the whole distance anyway.
00:41:09So he could stretch a little bit,
00:41:10quite a bit over half distance if he'd started with full tanks.
00:41:14Let's ride with Frentzen.
00:41:17Oh, that's Takagi coming.
00:41:32In the pits.
00:41:34Remember the 75 mile an hour speed limit as he goes out,
00:41:37all the way down to the line,
00:41:38which you'll see on the right there as he comes out,
00:41:39and then he can rejoin the circuit.
00:41:41But he'll be behind Zanardi who you saw just going through.
00:41:48Zanardi working through the Senna hairpin,
00:41:51trying to reel in Luca Baddauer.
00:41:54In the Minardi,
00:41:56one would think that the Williams could overtake a twitch from Zanardi's car though,
00:42:00as he exits that corner into the next twisty bit.
00:42:04And keeping the front end under him has been a problem
00:42:06that Zanardi has faced all season long,
00:42:08with the groove tires and the different aerodynamic feel of the car,
00:42:12I would suppose,
00:42:13compared to what he was doing the last several years.
00:42:15I saw Max Tappish yesterday,
00:42:17races in cars,
00:42:17he said,
00:42:18I'm going to go and see Zanardi and try and commiserate a little bit with him,
00:42:22see how he's doing.
00:42:23So we're beginning to move toward half distance in the race,
00:42:27and the pit stop window for a one-stop race is starting to open up for a few.
00:42:32Schumacher still on the point,
00:42:33now 4.2 ahead of Mika Hakkinen.
00:42:41Here at the Canadian Grand Prix,
00:42:43an unbelievable development.
00:42:45Yes, that is Michael Schumacher,
00:42:47he is out of the race.
00:42:48He came into the turn,
00:42:49he just overtaking one of the tailenders,
00:42:50look at him,
00:42:51he's out on that green stuff out there,
00:42:53and all there is is dust,
00:42:54and he hits that wall so hard.
00:42:56A very, very big mistake,
00:42:57here we go again,
00:42:58hits the kerbs,
00:42:59but he's totally on the wrong line,
00:43:01trying to gather it up,
00:43:02but no,
00:43:02he's still doing 70 miles an hour,
00:43:04and he hit that wall decidedly hard.
00:43:06Not a world champion's drive there.
00:43:08On a track known for attrition,
00:43:10it bites the man in front leading the championship,
00:43:13Peter Windsor.
00:43:14Well, nobody could believe what they've just seen
00:43:16on the screen here,
00:43:17Michael Schumacher making that mistake,
00:43:19but it looks as if he braked too late,
00:43:20having just tried to pass Olivier Panis,
00:43:22to lap Olivier Panis,
00:43:23and he braked a little bit too late,
00:43:25got on the dirt,
00:43:26hit the wall,
00:43:26as simple as that.
00:43:28Up front, of course,
00:43:29the beneficiary,
00:43:31Mika Hakkinen,
00:43:32with Irvine moving up to second,
00:43:33but seven seconds back,
00:43:35followed by Coulthard,
00:43:36everybody shuffles forward, of course,
00:43:38that puts Ralf Schumacher in the points,
00:43:40but what a break,
00:43:41apparently,
00:43:42and we've got a ways to go here,
00:43:43for Mika Hakkinen.
00:43:45Yeah, it's a long way to go,
00:43:46and now,
00:43:46we may well see whether Eddie Irvine
00:43:48was under any rules or not,
00:43:49because now,
00:43:50we may well see Eddie picking up some quicker laps,
00:43:53if he is capable of doing it,
00:43:54but that was a major disaster for Michael,
00:43:56but it just shows,
00:43:58how difficult and critical this cornering is,
00:44:00for these guys,
00:44:01in these cars.
00:44:02They get offline,
00:44:03and they are history.
00:44:05David Coulthard,
00:44:06also moving up,
00:44:08he's 3.8 behind Irvine,
00:44:10so if Irvine can do a speed up here,
00:44:13with a light fuel load,
00:44:14we have to assume,
00:44:15before the pit stop and closed ground,
00:44:17we could have a very dramatic pit stop sequence,
00:44:20as well as everything else.
00:44:22Peter hands Michael Schumacher.
00:44:24Unfortunately, Michael's not talking.
00:44:27Oh well,
00:44:27we haven't got Michael Schumacher after all.
00:44:29I'll translate for you,
00:44:30he was saying,
00:44:31what a pity in German.
00:44:32I think he probably was,
00:44:34don't you?
00:44:34A very silly mistake.
00:44:36Yeah, in this instance,
00:44:37no one but himself.
00:44:38But I have to say,
00:44:39Irvine is clocking in quicker laps,
00:44:41quite considerably,
00:44:43than Mika Hakkinen at the moment,
00:44:44has moved up a second in the last two laps,
00:44:47on the times that he did before,
00:44:49so he's probably going to get up,
00:44:50he knows that the race is down to him now,
00:44:52Ferraro,
00:44:52to salvage anything out of this.
00:44:54Yet again,
00:44:55let's see what Eddie can do.
00:44:56It's a long way to go.
00:44:57We're on lap number 33,
00:44:59for the leaders,
00:45:00Hakkinen,
00:45:01at the far western end of the course,
00:45:03Irvine following him,
00:45:04then Coulthard,
00:45:05Fisichella,
00:45:05Frentzen,
00:45:06and Ralf Schumacher,
00:45:08who had an off right where his brother did a moment ago,
00:45:10in the qualifying yesterday.
00:45:12But of course,
00:45:13Eddie has now,
00:45:13look at,
00:45:14Eddie has really got to get on the taps,
00:45:16because he's got about four laps,
00:45:17in which he can make a difference,
00:45:19catch up Hakkinen,
00:45:20if that's possible,
00:45:21so that he can have a really demon pit stop,
00:45:24and maybe get out ahead of Hakkinen.
00:45:25A long tall order,
00:45:26but it is also possible he's done a 21.2 again,
00:45:29a very good lap for him,
00:45:316.9 behind,
00:45:32he's got to pull a bit more than that.
00:45:34Look at Ralf Schumacher off in the shingle,
00:45:35down at the hairpin,
00:45:36pity for Ralf,
00:45:37but these cars are difficult to drive.
00:45:40I don't want to drive one.
00:45:41Nobody's going to offer one anyway.
00:45:44David Kiltard trying to catch up as well.
00:45:46The difference between Hakkinen and Irvine,
00:45:48advantage Irvine last trip around,
00:45:50was one one hundredth of a second,
00:45:52so Mika did a little bit of a speed up,
00:45:54responding I suppose,
00:45:55to a signal from the pits,
00:45:57and uh...
00:45:57Well he's got to do that,
00:45:58because if he had a bad pit stop,
00:46:00and if the Irvine had a crackingly good pit stop,
00:46:02it would be very very difficult for Hakkinen to stay ahead.
00:46:06Yeah.
00:46:07William Windsor,
00:46:08if we could,
00:46:09ask you about Hakkinen on lap number 34,
00:46:13and the brakes.
00:46:14Now they,
00:46:14he appeared to have a braking problem the other day,
00:46:16that got him off into the gravel.
00:46:18Might that be a concern?
00:46:20Well I think it is a concern,
00:46:21because McLaren of course are not going to talk about that at all.
00:46:24The last thing they want is information going out about their current situation.
00:46:27But if we look at what was going on,
00:46:28Hakkinen was starting to drop back from Schumacher,
00:46:31and then he did actually miss his braking,
00:46:33going into the chicane a few laps later,
00:46:34went over the grass.
00:46:35This is a sure sign that the pedal is getting long,
00:46:38and with these sorts of brakes,
00:46:39there's not much he can do.
00:46:40So Eddie Irvine, I would say,
00:46:41is pretty well poised at the moment.
00:46:44Well, Schumacher had an off.
00:46:45We saw the replay while Peter was talking,
00:46:48and we had seen that live just a moment ago.
00:46:50Zanardi and Schumacher are still in action,
00:46:53so from that standpoint,
00:46:55William's doing just fine today.
00:46:56And one of their crews has laid out,
00:46:58I'm not sure which car that's for,
00:47:00it's just down from their garage,
00:47:01so you can't identify it by which garage they're in front of.
00:47:05I have a feeling it would be Pajak,
00:47:07but that doesn't mean it is.
00:47:08Irvine, again, knocking another couple of hundreds off.
00:47:12Mika Hakkin in front,
00:47:13not enough to make a big difference,
00:47:14but he is down from up for four seconds to 3.6.
00:47:19Mika Hakkin, of course,
00:47:20driving out in front,
00:47:22driving...
00:47:29...but he's practiced on half of Saturdays.
00:47:32He knows how to do it.
00:47:34Working leader lap number 35,
00:47:38Johnny Herbert on the straightaway,
00:47:40running in ninth position.
00:47:41Hitler-Denise, meantime,
00:47:43got through by the end of the point,
00:47:45and now Ralph is off.
00:48:04...out, that's a...
00:48:06...crossed half, but now...
00:48:10...straightaway...
00:48:15...six point five,
00:48:16so there's a fair old gap through there,
00:48:19but as David Coulthard has really got to get on with this,
00:48:22he can make a showing here by pressing on Eddie Irvine as well.
00:48:25Peter, you have a thought on what we've been chatting about?
00:48:27Absolutely, yes.
00:48:28I think that top speed of Panis
00:48:29probably adds to the problem Michael Schumacher...
00:48:34...Schumacher would have...
00:48:35...really late to get...
00:48:39He was quite away across the road.
00:48:40He wasn't very close to Panis.
00:48:42Oh, there's Jacques.
00:48:43Jacques is off and stopped.
00:48:45The wheel at the front looks a little bit askew.
00:48:47He's straight in the place where Michael Schumacher went.
00:48:49Everybody's where Jacques went last year.
00:48:51I mean, or was it last year?
00:48:52Anyway, it's where he ended up before in this Grand Prix.
00:48:55Not at all good.
00:48:57Well, there are places that are traditional,
00:49:01and you see him limping a little bit as he got out,
00:49:03the right front of the car was knocked away.
00:49:06The suspension collapsed,
00:49:08and it looked like he was limping at least a little bit on his right leg.
00:49:11You see, we all thought the center cones would be the problem here today,
00:49:15but of course, what we overlooked
00:49:16was with the guys running on that grass a lot,
00:49:18coming in the grass,
00:49:21grass and dirt across,
00:49:22Zierich goes, look, just like Michael...
00:49:25He...
00:49:26...the second part of the corner.
00:49:28Absolute disaster for Jacques.
00:49:30What a way to go out of the race.
00:49:31I mean, straight in, he lost it.
00:49:33As he turned into the first part,
00:49:35never could turn the...
00:49:37...to go the other way.
00:49:38I don't know whether it's still to do with these tires
00:49:40or the setup these guys have to run,
00:49:42but it's certainly not fair.
00:49:42Fizzy Keller's in the pits having a stop.
00:49:44Remember, he was in a very good position of fifth place,
00:49:47fourth place, as I should say.
00:49:49But we also have Heinz Frenzel,
00:49:51who is in fifth place right behind him,
00:49:53but he goes out in front.
00:49:54He's on the rev limiter,
00:49:55frees it up,
00:49:56and then out comes Frenzel behind him.
00:49:57Great stop by those two.
00:49:59Good bit of pit work by both the teams.
00:50:01Oh, we're up to lap number 37.
00:50:03Of course, Jacques is now retired
00:50:05for the sixth consecutive time.
00:50:07Denise is in there.
00:50:08He's doing a pit stop.
00:50:09Seems quite a long one at the moment.
00:50:11Sixth place was his when he came into the pits.
00:50:14Fizzy Keller and Frenzel are done and out.
00:50:16Ralf Schumacher and Denise are in the pits.
00:50:18The top three, Hockenheim, Irvine, and Krutas
00:50:20still have a pit stop to make
00:50:22in the next few moments, we would assume.
00:50:24Yoto in front of Ralf Schumacher,
00:50:26who he was ahead of before.
00:50:28I believe I'm right in saying.
00:50:29When you talk about that corner, Derek,
00:50:31we heard Damon Hill talk about all the cars
00:50:33bringing what he called mud onto the track
00:50:36in every corner earlier on.
00:50:37And here comes the race leader, Mika Hockenheim,
00:50:39for his pit stop.
00:50:40Nice to see how quick his stop was.
00:50:43But we're right about it being
00:50:44one-stop strategy, aren't we?
00:50:49Good stop, 8.7.
00:50:50That's a normal stop for one stop.
00:50:52And there comes Eddie Irvine.
00:50:53He's in for his stop right in front of us here.
00:50:57Let's see how quick those Ferrari guys.
00:50:59Something like 18 guys working on that car
00:51:02as he comes in.
00:51:03Out of the way, he's free.
00:51:04Come on, Eddie, you've got to go.
00:51:05You've got to go.
00:51:06He's not going.
00:51:07He's having a job to get a gear.
00:51:08Oh, no, he hasn't got a gear.
00:51:09They weren't finished on the car.
00:51:11That was a disaster.
00:51:1212.3 seconds.
00:51:13He will be in the clutches of David Coulthard.
00:51:15And that won't be good for Ferrari.
00:51:17Of course, Coulthard, yeah.
00:51:18But Coulthard's getting held up.
00:51:20Oh, he's got traffic.
00:51:25Oh, dear Ferrari.
00:51:26After all we say, and I was down there saying
00:51:27what wonderful pit stops they've done,
00:51:29Nigel Stettin and Schumacher's guys said,
00:51:30yes, we're really getting better.
00:51:32That wasn't a good one.
00:51:33Well, right now, he's trapped behind Sakagi
00:51:36as he moves through the twisty bits,
00:51:37heading to the chicane and then back to the straightaway.
00:51:40And we'll have to wait and see if he'll come in this time
00:51:42around.
00:51:43So that's handing some of that lost time
00:51:45back to Eddie Irvine, who has gotten back out.
00:51:48Hakkinen had a good pit stop.
00:51:50He got the fuel he needed to get in and the tires.
00:51:52It looked like the tires were done and ready to go
00:51:55on Irvine's car.
00:51:56Something else went wrong.
00:51:57Something else on the left-hand side.
00:51:58I see that the McLaren pit are ready for David,
00:52:00so he'll be in this lap as well.
00:52:02Not a bad time.
00:52:03The pace car's going out.
00:52:04Now, what a time for David.
00:52:05They're bringing the pace safety car out
00:52:07to pick up Mika Hakkinen.
00:52:11Alex Zanardi comes in for his pit stop,
00:52:13and we expect that Coulthard will follow him as well
00:52:17on this trip around.
00:52:18Ready for it.
00:52:19That is very advantageous for David.
00:52:22Mika Hakkinen getting gathered up by the safety car,
00:52:25and Coulthard is in.
00:52:27Can't get the fuller off.
00:52:33Look, he can't get it off.
00:52:34Yes, he has.
00:52:34Finally got it off.
00:52:36Boy, it's so difficult getting these refueling kit.
00:52:38I mean, if you were the man that's doing it,
00:52:40that is difficult.
00:52:40As long as there's Eddie right behind him.
00:52:42Eddie's gone by.
00:52:43Can he go by?
00:52:43Yes, he's gone by under the yellow,
00:52:45but you've got to say David wasn't out of the pit road.
00:52:48Status quo.
00:52:51David had a new line that's been painted on pit exit there
00:52:54to define where you have to go as you enter that corner.
00:52:58Really, it was added as a result of Michael Schumacher's problem
00:53:01last year when he got a little wide and made contact
00:53:03and was penalized.
00:53:04Well, it was a little wide,
00:53:05because he took the other guy right out.
00:53:07He took the whole road.
00:53:09Well, they defined it by a paint line,
00:53:11and they said, don't go there anymore.
00:53:13And David Coulthard had to stay strong to drive his left.
00:53:16So even though he looked like he might be able to burst out
00:53:18of there in front of Eddie,
00:53:19he couldn't defend the line.
00:53:22One thing I do hope now is maybe somebody will get out
00:53:24with some brushes and brush some of that mess away
00:53:27in the chicane before the pits,
00:53:28because that'd be good to clean up
00:53:30and get somewhere rid of the dust.
00:53:31A lot of people have hit there.
00:53:32There must be a lot of debris.
00:53:33Let's watch Jacques.
00:53:34Look, there he is right in the middle of your picture,
00:53:36losing it.
00:53:37Oh, this is Michael's crash.
00:53:38I'm sorry.
00:53:39But so similar to Jacques, you can't believe,
00:53:41because I'm sure Jacques will look just the same
00:53:43when we do a slow-mo of it.
00:53:46Not at all Schumacher style,
00:53:47but I think Peter was right.
00:53:49I think that was because of his overtaking
00:53:51of a 204 mile an hour car,
00:53:53and he just didn't have the room to get by him
00:53:55and got on the dirt.
00:53:56It was a pity he didn't take to the grass
00:53:57and just run straight across,
00:53:59which several of them did in practice.
00:54:00Let's take a look at the serial
00:54:02as well as we can here on the picture.
00:54:04Hockennan is the first car behind the safety car.
00:54:07Would there be any traffic between him and second place?
00:54:11Yes, there is.
00:54:14Irvine is the fourth car in the serial,
00:54:17second place in the race.
00:54:18We'll confirm that once the timing monitors catch up,
00:54:22but we believe that to be the case.
00:54:26It looks like Eddie, when they do the restarts,
00:54:27is going to have to make a move
00:54:28to go buy yet another Prost on the straight line,
00:54:31which, as we said just now, did take out his teammate.
00:54:35But this is the corner.
00:54:36This is the dodgy corner.
00:54:37This is the dirt.
00:54:40So the third time in this year's Canadian Grand Prix,
00:54:44and the safety car is out.
00:54:45Hockennan leads the race.
00:54:47The safety car is out.
00:54:48Hockennan leads with Kulthard and Irvine, two and three.
00:54:54Welcome back to the Canadian Grand Prix on Fox SportsNet.
00:54:57The safety car has just pulled off.
00:54:59Mika Hockennan pulling away under acceleration
00:55:03and will lead the charge to the line.
00:55:05He leads the race.
00:55:06Then he has Badawer and Panisse between him
00:55:08and second place, Eddie Irvine and Kulthard.
00:55:10Kulthard goes around the outside and he gets him.
00:55:12He gets Eddie.
00:55:13It was a very dozen.
00:55:13What a, oh, they've dangled.
00:55:16Off the road.
00:55:17What a silly movement.
00:55:17Eddie's kept it going.
00:55:19Keep it running, Eddie.
00:55:20Keep those gears.
00:55:21Well, it was, well, that was, I went,
00:55:22I don't know who's fault that was.
00:55:24David went around the outside of him.
00:55:26Absolutely around the outside.
00:55:27David really suffered at the end of it.
00:55:29He lost a lot of time there.
00:55:31And of course, Eddie's way back as well.
00:55:33Probably not happy, but Eddie had to hang in there.
00:55:36He wasn't going to let David go around the outside.
00:55:38He had to try one or the other.
00:55:40David went around the outside.
00:55:41Wasn't good enough.
00:55:42You'll hear more than one driver say,
00:55:44you must defend your position.
00:55:45Almost at all times.
00:55:46Difficult to defend it from both sides.
00:55:48That was his problem.
00:55:49But Kulthard had him okay on the right side,
00:55:51going into the first turn.
00:55:52Let's watch it again.
00:55:53It gets pinched at the bottom.
00:55:54David comes around the outside,
00:55:56goes to the next one and Eddie out accelerating.
00:55:58But David was so sideways.
00:55:59They both tangle.
00:56:00I can't believe there's no damage to Eddie's car.
00:56:03He did a tremendous job to zap it.
00:56:04Here we come again.
00:56:05Look, David right around the outside,
00:56:07gets a car length ahead of Eddie,
00:56:08but he has the traction coming out.
00:56:10Eddie does.
00:56:11Goes into the next one and cuts David off.
00:56:13I don't know if it was a good move.
00:56:14I admired the move and David obviously didn't.
00:56:17But that's the way it goes.
00:56:18And luckily there was nothing worse.
00:56:19But here's another look.
00:56:20Look at David working him as they come on to the
00:56:22right down into the center curves.
00:56:24It goes to the left of him,
00:56:25goes to the right of him.
00:56:26And Eddie really didn't brake late enough.
00:56:29Goes around the inside,
00:56:30trying to keep a nice tight line.
00:56:32David goes, but Eddie has the traction.
00:56:33Zap.
00:56:34Past he goes.
00:56:35And then they tangle.
00:56:38So that changes things considerably at the front.
00:56:41Hocken and then Fisichella,
00:56:42Frentzen, Schumacher,
00:56:43Ralf that is,
00:56:44Johnny Herbert and Pedro Diniz.
00:56:46And the pits are getting ready for both Irvine
00:56:48and D. Sue Coulthard.
00:56:49Coulthard is in for his stop.
00:56:51Now, will Eddie come in?
00:56:52They're taking the tires away.
00:56:53Are they at Ferrari?
00:56:54Eddie certainly didn't come in that lap.
00:56:56So maybe he's all right.
00:56:58They're checking the suspension
00:56:59and putting tires on the front.
00:57:00It doesn't look like there was any structural damage.
00:57:03No, but it's a long stop.
00:57:04A mighty long stop.
00:57:0514 seconds.
00:57:07Well, if those top wheels don't look that good.
00:57:08Anyway,
00:57:10Eddie Irvine has not come in.
00:57:11The Ferrari mechanics have moved back into their pits.
00:57:13So presumably,
00:57:14Eddie is saying the car feels all right.
00:57:15I'm staying out here.
00:57:18So they all move backward in the field.
00:57:21Irvine listed in eighth.
00:57:23Coulthard listed in tenth as he came back out.
00:57:26There's the two top six.
00:57:28Mika Hacken in control of the race.
00:57:29Then Fisichella,
00:57:31Frentzen,
00:57:31Ralf Schumacher,
00:57:32Johnny Herbert and Pedro Diniz in the sixth position.
00:57:36Alex Zanardi within one position.
00:57:38Of getting points.
00:57:39He runs seventh right now.
00:57:41Irvine and Takaki,
00:57:43Coulthard,
00:57:43Badouin
00:57:44and Olivier Panisse
00:57:45in the seventh through twelfth position.
00:57:47And Genet is still on course.
00:57:4913 cars running in the Grand Prix of Canada.
00:57:53About a third of the race to go.
00:57:55Fisichella being held up badly there
00:57:57by one of the Minaris
00:57:58and also one of the Prosts.
00:58:00And you can see he's got Frentzen's attentions as well behind him.
00:58:03And he's got to get by on part of this circuit.
00:58:06Blue flags wave for these slower cars.
00:58:08Will they move over?
00:58:08Yes, they moved over a bit to let Fisichella through.
00:58:11But there isn't enough room.
00:58:12The braking distances are so short.
00:58:14And also I can see that Frentzen wasn't taking any chances there either.
00:58:17He could have had a go at Fisichella but didn't.
00:58:20Wow.
00:58:20Luca Badouin and Olivier Panisse,
00:58:22those two fellows in between them,
00:58:24are trying to do some racing right here.
00:58:26Those are the two cars that were between Hacken and Irvine on the restart.
00:58:30Yeah, and they're still causing a bit of havoc.
00:58:32But all that they're having their own race.
00:58:33Now, we should get some moves after this.
00:58:35Is Fisichella going to go by?
00:58:36Don't lock it up on that green track.
00:58:38Giancarlo, that is where you'll go off.
00:58:40He's going to have to do it down into the hairpin.
00:58:42And of course, I'm sure that Frentzen is going to try the same.
00:58:45There are 10 cars left on the lead lap, as you can see.
00:58:48But that has only been helped, of course,
00:58:49by the fact we've had so many pace cars out there.
00:58:52Now, come on, Fisichella.
00:58:53Look at that guy.
00:58:54What's he doing pulling over?
00:58:55He's blocking out Fisichella as he goes down.
00:58:57He wasn't going to do anything with acceleration.
00:58:59But of course, they do go very fast, those crosses.
00:59:02We saw they were 204 miles an hour.
00:59:04So how can we get by with Fisichella?
00:59:07He's not making much of it.
00:59:08Look at these two.
00:59:09They're having a go as well for position.
00:59:11Still, Fisichella doesn't make it.
00:59:12Oh dear, they're on that.
00:59:14See all the dirt flying of Fisichella.
00:59:15Nearly went in the wall.
00:59:16Now it's Frenzen through.
00:59:18Look at the dirt on the road.
00:59:19They should clean that dirt up when they're moving these cars out of the way.
00:59:22Frenzen's not going to give way now.
00:59:24He's got to have a go on the inside here.
00:59:26He's done it.
00:59:27Fisichella's gone with him.
00:59:28Let's ride with Frenzen.
00:59:30In the center hairpin.
00:59:31Up the hill they go.
00:59:38In the fourth gear here.
00:59:48Fourth or fifth gear here in about 150 miles an hour through this switchback.
00:59:53Then they'll build to 180.
00:59:55And again, one of those dramatic brake points coming up in just a moment there.
01:00:00Right here.
01:00:01And this is where Mika Hakkinen went off just the other day.
01:00:05Well, Frenzen moves into second place.
01:00:07Working the traffic and the dust in the final corner.
01:00:10Fisichella moves back to third.
01:00:12Then Ralf Schumacher, Herbert and Denise.
01:00:16I thought for a moment there Fisichella might get the win that he'd asked for.
01:00:193-2-1 over three years.
01:00:21But not at the moment.
01:00:22We find Harold in front of him.
01:00:23Remember, Frenzen has a much faster car engine-wise than the McBenison with the Supertec engine.
01:00:29Here's Ride again with Fisichella as he goes by the back marker.
01:00:34Look at that braking.
01:00:35Look at the way he outbraked that guy.
01:00:37Straight through.
01:00:39Watch that dust as you come through there.
01:00:40You don't want to step out of the line.
01:00:41You can see the dirt lying there.
01:00:43That is so dangerous.
01:00:45So dangerous.
01:00:47Busy having another look to go by the frost.
01:00:48Can he get by?
01:00:49Yes, come on.
01:00:50Well done, Olivier.
01:00:52This time he got some room and he'll move through the center curve.
01:00:55And maybe they can rejoin the battle for second place in a moment.
01:00:58Meantime, Mika Häkkinen just sailing away by 13.5 seconds over those two.
01:01:04They worked with the traffic in and about.
01:01:07And Häkkinen in position to pick up ten.
01:01:10Michael Schumacher will score none.
01:01:12We would have a new leader in the World Championship leaving Canada after this.
01:01:17Eddie Irvine out of the points at the moment.
01:01:19But he's lapping two seconds of that quicker than anybody else that's in front of him apart from Häkkinen.
01:01:26So Eddie, you know, is really making his inroads onto these guys.
01:01:29Look at that.
01:01:29He's in the back of that group.
01:01:31This great train.
01:01:32He just did a 22 on his previous lap, which was the same basically as Häkkinen.
01:01:36You can see him right at the back of this group as he comes through.
01:01:38Of course, everybody in front of him is having a diet, which is not normal at this stage of the race.
01:01:42Normally, they're much more spread out.
01:01:43So Eddie has got to make some moves without tangling.
01:01:47You know, we talked about the driver championship.
01:01:49But also, constructors' points are at issue.
01:01:52And right now, Ferrari would be out of those.
01:01:55They certainly would.
01:01:56And that's why Eddie's got to make some moves.
01:01:58He has some time left on his hands to do it.
01:02:00He's got 24 laps.
01:02:01So he can make some inroads.
01:02:03But he's got to be so clean and tidy when he does it.
01:02:05He's got a very quick Johnny Herbert up there in front of him.
01:02:07So it's not going to be easy for him to get by some of these drivers.
01:02:11At the moment, he's got several cars he's got that are very quick with very powerful engines.
01:02:17And he's right behind a Ferrari engine car at the moment.
01:02:20For still at issue, Frentzen and Fisichella and Schumacher for that matter for second place.
01:02:24But a good two-car battle for the position.
01:02:27Peter, some thoughts on that.
01:02:28Well, yeah.
01:02:29I mean, everybody down here's dumbfounded at how close this race has turned out to be.
01:02:32Second down to sixth place, covered by five seconds.
01:02:34It's a fantastic motor race.
01:02:35And a few slower backlanders thrown in between.
01:02:38Anything could happen.
01:02:39Back to you.
01:02:4014.3 seconds.
01:02:41That's what Hakkinen now has over second place.
01:02:43He's driving away.
01:02:44One has to say, the reason they're so close is the fact that we're using American-style
01:02:49yellow portions of place cards.
01:02:51And that's what happens when you get it.
01:02:52In American racing, you get some very close stuff.
01:02:54And that's what we're seeing here today.
01:02:56Sometimes it has to be done.
01:02:57In this case, it was done because of incidents.
01:02:59Yeah, well, you get, you know, the key to that is stay on the lead lap.
01:03:02And you can get back to the fight very often with a free trip around the course.
01:03:0814.3 seconds back to Frentzen, Fisichella three seconds further back.
01:03:12So that's broken off ever so slightly.
01:03:14Ralf Schumacher looking at a chance at the podium.
01:03:17He's running fourth, 2.3 behind Fisichella, then Herbert and Denise.
01:03:22We're at the Canadian Grand Prix.
01:03:24You're watching Fats Fortnet live coverage from the Ile de Notre Dame, the Jacques Villeneuve circuit.
01:03:36Welcome back to the Grand Prix of Canada,
01:03:38Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, where Mika Hakkinen is now driving off in the lead after all kinds
01:03:45of crashes and misfortune have befallen many of the runners and riders in the final turn,
01:03:50leading on to the pit straightaway, Derek Bell, including Michael Schumacher.
01:03:54Yes, it's been an absolute disaster for several of them.
01:03:56And, of course, they're bringing a lot of dirt over.
01:03:58Let's just recap and see some of these.
01:04:00The first one is Zonta on the second lap.
01:04:02Look at Ricciardo come through.
01:04:03Totally lost it.
01:04:04Tail goes in the wall.
01:04:05End of the race for him.
01:04:06Out goes the first BR.
01:04:07Then it was Damon's turn.
01:04:09He gets toe deep in going, gets it sideways.
01:04:12Out goes the tail on the dirt.
01:04:13And, of course, puts a lot more dirt on the road at the same time.
01:04:16Number three was Michael, totally in control of the race.
01:04:18He tries to overtake one of the slower cars.
01:04:20Comes in too deep.
01:04:21Can't get control of it.
01:04:22Hits the dirt.
01:04:23And, whoa, does he break his car up.
01:04:25You nearly take him, too, by one of the other pros.
01:04:28And then we call Jack Villeneuve, who went straight in doing the same thing.
01:04:31And he, no doubt, why he was limping over that wall, I'm not surprised at all.
01:04:35Here we are for Zanardi on a...
01:04:37Zanardi's coming for a 10-second penalty.
01:04:39We don't quite know why it was, but it might have been for holding up some of...
01:04:42Maybe Irvine or something.
01:04:44He's one of several penalties that are being assessed here in the next couple of moments.
01:04:49Out of the race, Michael Schumacher.
01:04:50We just saw that.
01:04:51Zana, Burt, and Lacey, Barrichello.
01:04:54And Lacey went early.
01:04:55A couple of these are mechanical, but not all of them.
01:04:58Not very many.
01:04:58Hill, De La Rosa, Trulli, Villeneuve, and Takagi.
01:05:02We have 12 running.
01:05:04There are nine on the lead lap.
01:05:06And there are a host of penalties, Peter Windsor.
01:05:08That's right.
01:05:09Olivier Panis, Alex Zanardi, and David Coulthard.
01:05:11All penalized for 10-second stop-go.
01:05:13In the pit lane, the feeling is that they overtook before they got to the start-finish line.
01:05:18When they were behind the safety car.
01:05:20Not confirmed, but that's what the general opinion is here.
01:05:23Back to you.
01:05:25Well, that could be the official...
01:05:27That could be the explanation.
01:05:28But regardless, it is 10 seconds wasted in the pit for something that went wrong.
01:05:33And those are tough to get back.
01:05:34Well, it's more than 10, as you well know.
01:05:36We were discussing this.
01:05:37It's 10 plus the entry plus the exit.
01:05:39So they lose maybe 20 seconds.
01:05:41And that's a really heck of a lot.
01:05:43There's Eddie Obein working over the back of Johnny Herbert.
01:05:45He's really going for the feel like anything.
01:05:47He's up to sixth place.
01:05:48He's got Herbert in front of him in fifth.
01:05:50Is Eddie going to make the move?
01:05:51Oh, that was so close.
01:05:53Eddie had everything locked up.
01:05:54And somehow Johnny did not wait and kept on it.
01:05:57And Eddie slid behind him and did no damage.
01:06:00But these two are going to be locked in a pretty good battle.
01:06:02Remember, Johnny is the only Ford car, the only Ford-Stewart car left in the race.
01:06:06And has been doing a very good job.
01:06:07But Eddie is lapping somewhat quicker than the others.
01:06:10He's in the points now, as you mentioned, up into sixth position.
01:06:14And David Coulthard now moving in to serve his penalty, which will be 10 seconds.
01:06:18The mechanics cannot work on the car during a penalty.
01:06:21But they can look it over in case they might want to bring him back and do something that matters.
01:06:25I'll tell you what, that 10 seconds seems to be a really long time.
01:06:29Well, it's over for him.
01:06:30Yeah, I've, in fact, occurred one myself.
01:06:32And it just seems such a waste throughout the race.
01:06:33You have to come in and stop.
01:06:35That is awful.
01:06:36After all that work, 10 seconds is a lifetime in motor racing.
01:06:39Look at Eddie working over the back of Herbert.
01:06:41He will have a go at the end of the straight now.
01:06:43But Eddie's got to have a clean exit out of Casino.
01:06:45Get it all together as he goes down the back straight.
01:06:47Of course, he doesn't have much of a straight yet.
01:06:49But it will be.
01:06:50And Eddie's got a slipstream tow, as we call it.
01:06:52And get out there and go down inside Johnny.
01:06:54But the braking distances are so short.
01:06:57Is he going to have a go this time?
01:06:58He's close.
01:06:59I don't think he is.
01:06:59He's too far back.
01:07:01No, he can do nothing about it.
01:07:02But he's all over the back of Johnny at the moment.
01:07:04I think Eddie can see that he has this chance going down into the first turn like he did last time.
01:07:08Well, maybe a lesson learned.
01:07:10They know there's dust in there.
01:07:11And he's seen other folks go away in that corner.
01:07:14And the line just may be too narrow if you try to outbrake somebody in there.
01:07:18You get out of shape, get in late, bingo, you're gone.
01:07:20Well, we saw that last time.
01:07:21And of course, what you can do if you try to commit too often, you can overheat your tires.
01:07:26And therefore, you need to back off a bit and sort of recompose yourself
01:07:30and have a go in a couple of laps' time.
01:07:31He is setting up Johnny Herbert.
01:07:34Johnny is a very experienced driver.
01:07:35Done a heck of a lot of grunt.
01:07:37Oh, Eddie had a look down the inside.
01:07:39But he is worrying Johnny.
01:07:40The only thing Johnny can do, is what we all have to do,
01:07:42is shut your eyes to the guy behind and drive your heart out.
01:07:45Well, he's been trying hard, no doubt.
01:07:47Oh, Zanardi off.
01:07:48And Zanardi's gone off right through the corner.
01:07:51I hope he didn't get back.
01:07:52He got back on the pavement.
01:07:53We saw the approaching traffic there.
01:07:55But I think...
01:07:55Oh, look at Eddie getting sideways.
01:07:57I'm sorry to keep interrupting.
01:07:58There's a lot of accident there, Chris.
01:08:00Let's go back to Eddie.
01:08:01He was trying hard earlier.
01:08:02While we were away, we saw him go straight through a corner,
01:08:05just like Zanardi concluded a moment ago.
01:08:07It was on at Zanardi, and he missed a corner
01:08:09and took out a driver on the exit.
01:08:11A little bit more extreme than Eddie's.
01:08:12But Eddie is going to have to work out on his back straight yet again,
01:08:15as they work their way up to 200-odd miles an hour.
01:08:18Amazing to see the Ferrari cannot get by, even with a tow.
01:08:22Can do nothing about it.
01:08:23I'm surprised.
01:08:24But Eddie does catch him up on the brakes.
01:08:26He's just probably just having a look.
01:08:27But he knows, Eddie does, that if he does try and outbrake Johnny,
01:08:30he's got to make it a very clean move,
01:08:32and he's going to be on some of that green track,
01:08:35which we saw many people who got in the wall,
01:08:37and I'm sure it is going.
01:08:38Four guys have gone in there.
01:08:39I don't want to be the fifth.
01:08:40And almost look as though Herbert pulled him a little bit.
01:08:42This is Zanardi's off, I believe, a moment ago.
01:08:44Well, he actually pulled over to let somebody through,
01:08:46give him a bit of road, and ended up losing it on the dirt.
01:08:49A very nice move by Alexander, but it was close.
01:08:52I thought it was.
01:08:53He disappeared under the camera lens just before.
01:08:55You see, he's gone for some reason.
01:08:56He was letting a Minardi through,
01:08:58which I don't think is actually what I would like to do at all.
01:09:00I'd be most upset letting a Minardi through.
01:09:02Luca Badauer with the approach and trapping.
01:09:04He held his line all the way around.
01:09:07They are fairly mis-touching.
01:09:08Here is the Irvine-Herbert battle for a couple of points
01:09:12as they move back through the twisty bits
01:09:14toward the chicane in the casino corner one more time.
01:09:18Jim Rome tells it like it is on the nightline of sports talk shows,
01:09:22weeknights at 6.30 p.m. and again at midnight on Fox Sportsnet.
01:09:27Please check your local listings.
01:09:31David Coulthard trying to work his way back to the points.
01:09:35He currently runs in 8th position.
01:09:38It may be too late for that.
01:09:39He's got to track down Denise from 40 seconds back,
01:09:43and that may be an impossible task.
01:09:45Lap's beginning to run up.
01:09:47Yes, he's 35 seconds behind Eddie Irvine,
01:09:49who's, as you know, is in 6th place.
01:09:51Eddie working over Johnny Herbert.
01:09:53They were catching up a couple of slower cars.
01:09:56There they go now.
01:09:57They're catching these two guys up,
01:09:59and it might be a chance then for Eddie in the traffic
01:10:01to make a move on Johnny.
01:10:03He's obviously tried everything he can,
01:10:04and all that's left now is Johnny making a mistake
01:10:07for the fact, of course,
01:10:08but I seem to recollect, did I not,
01:10:10that Johnny came in early for a pit stop, didn't he?
01:10:14I think he's on a two-stop strategy.
01:10:17Do we not see him come in on about lap 20?
01:10:19I believe we did.
01:10:19He was one of the early ones,
01:10:21and the only one that came in early,
01:10:24so he may peel off here before too long.
01:10:26So he's running lighter fuel, you see,
01:10:28and that means Eddie's having a job under braking,
01:10:30because he's carrying less weight,
01:10:31and that, obviously, Ferrari will have told him,
01:10:34don't go too berserk,
01:10:35because Herbert is on a two-stop strategy, I assume.
01:10:39They're all running in the 1.23s,
01:10:411.23 and a half for Herbert last time around,
01:10:441.23.4 for Eddie Irvine.
01:10:46At the front, Hakkinen at 1.22.695
01:10:50is not the quickest on the track at the moment.
01:10:53Hint Frentzen has been doing a little quicker than that
01:10:55just a couple of moments ago.
01:10:5753 laps are done.
01:10:59Race summary looks this way.
01:11:01The leader is Hakkinen.
01:11:02He's led 22 of 52.
01:11:04Michael Schumacher did the others.
01:11:06Just the one lead change,
01:11:07Michael handed it to Mika
01:11:09when he went off into the wall.
01:11:10Remaining cars 12,
01:11:12and there are eight of them on the lead lap,
01:11:14and there he goes.
01:11:16Did Eddie get it?
01:11:17And barely gathered it up.
01:11:18Did Eddie go through there?
01:11:19Well, that's taking it easy.
01:11:20Eddie is no easy there.
01:11:22Let's go back and look to see that retake again.
01:11:24Having said that,
01:11:25Johnny really loses it going into the turn one as he does.
01:11:28But while we didn't notice having mouthed off
01:11:31about the fact that Herbert had a second start,
01:11:32let's take him as he comes to Eddie down the inside.
01:11:34He keeps Johnny up.
01:11:35Johnny gets out of shape.
01:11:37Oh, he really gets out of shape going there.
01:11:38Eddie takes the grass to shut him off
01:11:40because he knows Johnny is going to go there as well.
01:11:43So he takes the grass.
01:11:44He brings the grass with him.
01:11:45The car gets out of shape,
01:11:46and that is it.
01:11:47Look, they're both on the grass.
01:11:49Otherwise, I think Johnny might have overtaken him.
01:11:51Great bit of driving.
01:11:52Very spirited stuff.
01:11:54And just after they straightened the cars up,
01:11:56Herbert...
01:11:57Now, let's take a look at it from a little higher up.
01:11:59There's the braking maneuver.
01:12:00Look at that.
01:12:01Eddie says,
01:12:01No way, Jose.
01:12:03I cannot break you.
01:12:04I'm not going to hit that wall.
01:12:05I'm going across the grass.
01:12:05And Johnny says,
01:12:06Well, that's a good way.
01:12:07Let's follow you.
01:12:08Well, Herbert either shook a fist or tore away a visor cover.
01:12:11I don't know which, but I suspect the prior.
01:12:13They will have a lot, I think, at the end of the day.
01:12:15Good bit of driving.
01:12:16I love to see some spirited stuff.
01:12:18I did unfortunately say that, of course,
01:12:21that Johnny Herbert had to make two stops.
01:12:23He'd already made his second, but we didn't see it.
01:12:25So I apologize for that.
01:12:271.22.9.
01:12:28Last trip around for Hakkinen.
01:12:2914.4 ahead of Princeton.
01:12:31And in control.
01:12:33Not forcing the issue by any means.
01:12:3514 seconds.
01:12:36That's a long way.
01:12:36He's only three and a half seconds.
01:12:383.9 behind Ralf Schumacher, who just went by us here.
01:12:41Eddie's closer than 3.9 as I speak.
01:12:43That was the last lap.
01:12:44Eddie is even closer than that as he goes by here.
01:12:47He is 2.7 seconds behind Ralf Schumacher.
01:12:50He pulled a second.
01:12:511.2 on that lap.
01:12:52Of course, catching Ralf is one thing in the Williams.
01:12:54The other fact is overtaking him.
01:12:56But remember, of course, that Ralf does run...
01:12:59is running the Supertec engine.
01:13:01It does not have the power.
01:13:02It's some 70 or 80 horsepower down on the Ferrari.
01:13:05So Eddie might have that advantage on the straight.
01:13:08Eddie looking for two points from where he is on the day,
01:13:11which is a good rescue considering what happened.
01:13:14He'd like to maximize that.
01:13:15He will be in third in the Driver Championship
01:13:17regardless of what he does from this point forward.
01:13:20Michael will be in second at 30.
01:13:22And Hakkinen, if he holds position, will be the leader.
01:13:25We're in the closing laps of the Canadian Grand Prix.
01:13:27This is live coverage of that Grand Prix on Fox Sportsnet.
01:13:35Welcome back to a sensational Canadian Grand Prix.
01:13:38We're in the closing stages now.
01:13:3912 laps to go.
01:13:40Eddie Irvine is on the charge looking for fourth place.
01:13:42I'm in the Williams Winfield garage.
01:13:44Ralf Schumacher under a lot of pressure from Irvine.
01:13:47But that's not the only thing in this race.
01:13:48We've had accidents.
01:13:49We've had 10-second penalties.
01:13:50Micah Hakkinen looking cool out front.
01:13:52But as yet, anything could happen.
01:13:55In fact, Eddie Irvine has now pulled within one second of Ralf Schumacher.
01:13:59So watching the clock isn't necessary.
01:14:01It's measured in feet and you see it on the screen.
01:14:03As Eddie Irvine continues to use a lot of curbing,
01:14:06which is the fast way around,
01:14:08he is really on the charge.
01:14:10Yes, he's really getting there.
01:14:11Remember, he is obviously quite hurrying.
01:14:13He's quicker in practice, quicker in qualifying.
01:14:15And Eddie is the charger and he's having a great race.
01:14:17He's got the whole of Ferrari behind him right now.
01:14:19He's going to look at Ralf at the end of the straight.
01:14:21As I said before, they are some 1780 horsepower down on power.
01:14:27As you can see, one second gap between them.
01:14:28It isn't one second as you see them.
01:14:30This is very close stuff.
01:14:31Eddie is going to look.
01:14:32He's going to set him up for an overtake next time.
01:14:34Remember, Ralf doesn't realize how Eddie overtook Johnny Herbert
01:14:38and what he did to do it.
01:14:39Only Eddie knows how it worked.
01:14:40But he might have a look down inside him as he comes into turn one.
01:14:46Perhaps not.
01:14:47Although he looks to the right-hand side.
01:14:49Cold-tired shoulders, that's not necessarily the preferred way around.
01:14:53Right up under his wing, nearly touching.
01:14:55Let's go back to Peter Winter.
01:14:56Yeah, this reminds me of the Brazilian Grand Prix
01:14:58because Irvine was right on Ralf Schumacher's tail
01:15:00for about the last five, six closing laps.
01:15:02And Ralf did a very good job holding him off.
01:15:04I'm not sure he's going to be so successful today, but let's see.
01:15:07Yeah, I think that there's certainly, Peter, with this length of straight,
01:15:09Eddie can do something about him at working over.
01:15:12He's got to figure out how to get out of the casino hairpin really, really closely.
01:15:15Look at the gap, too, between Fizzy Keller and Irvine.
01:15:18Eddie could, in fact, do probably a bit of a good job
01:15:20on catching up Fizzy Keller if he could get by Ralf
01:15:22because he certainly is on a roll, turning him, you know, 121 laps.
01:15:28Ralf got a little bit testy to the left side there on the exit through that corner.
01:15:33Almost put himself in jeopardy.
01:15:35It looked, at least from that camera angle, like it did.
01:15:37Look how Eddie catches him up.
01:15:38He wants to have it really smooth.
01:15:39Look how close.
01:15:40This is where he's got to get on the power,
01:15:42really get that car to work on the straight,
01:15:44up to the 200 mile an hour and slip by Ralf at the end.
01:15:47And this is when you could feel that toe stay with him.
01:15:49He's made areas.
01:15:50Freddie's right with him.
01:15:51Eddie is going to have a go down one side.
01:15:53He's gone down the other side that one would anticipate.
01:15:56He's got him.
01:15:56Great bit of driveway at the Irvine.
01:15:58Super drive.
01:15:59And it's kept him on the correct line for the corner.
01:16:01Don't touch that wall, Eddie.
01:16:02Keep it clean.
01:16:03The Ferrari guys are all behind you in the pits.
01:16:06Now, you wonder if that's all he can do.
01:16:08He'll sail away, one would expect.
01:16:09But it's 12 seconds forward to the next spot.
01:16:12And if he gets there and gets the position,
01:16:15he could have a podium finish after the off.
01:16:18The trouble is Fizzy Keller is lapping fractionally quicker.
01:16:20Let's watch the pass again.
01:16:22I think that's what we're going to do.
01:16:23Here he comes.
01:16:23He went down the opposite side.
01:16:25Ralf didn't expect that at all.
01:16:26He was going to block Eddie out onto
01:16:28and push Eddie out on the grass on the right of himself.
01:16:30But he didn't.
01:16:30Eddie dipped down the inside and Ralf couldn't get back.
01:16:33And it kept Eddie on that clean black surface.
01:16:35And that's what you have to do.
01:16:37Brilliantly executed.
01:16:39Perfectly timed.
01:16:40And he picked up the spot.
01:16:41Here it is.
01:16:41Look at that move.
01:16:42Yeah, super move.
01:16:43Early on in the lap.
01:16:44And Ralf was trying to block him.
01:16:45He was trying to go down the middle and say,
01:16:46Eddie, you've got to make your mind up.
01:16:47Eddie made his mind up, boy.
01:16:48And he'd gone.
01:16:49But that little feint to the right gave him
01:16:51maybe a quarter of a lane more when Ralf responded.
01:16:54And quickly back to the left.
01:16:56And he had it done.
01:16:57Yes.
01:16:57Right there.
01:16:57Ralf knew that if Eddie had gone down the other side,
01:16:59but he didn't.
01:17:00He went down there.
01:17:00He wanted to push Eddie on that crab you can see
01:17:03on the left of the road there.
01:17:04That's what he was trying to do.
01:17:06And he didn't.
01:17:07So it's now Hakanen, Frentzen, Fizzy Keller,
01:17:09Irvine, Schumacher, Herbert.
01:17:11And that is Ralf Schumacher, fifth position.
01:17:13Good drive for Herbert as well.
01:17:15Still in the points.
01:17:17Being shadowed by Pedro Diniz at the moment.
01:17:20Just less than a second behind.
01:17:22Michael Schumacher may well rue the moment
01:17:24when he lost himself into that wall.
01:17:27Because the championship was really close in both respects.
01:17:30Eddie's going to get some points.
01:17:31But my goodness, he's putting the pressure on Ferrari now.
01:17:34This was going to be a Ferrari circuit.
01:17:36And it was until Michael planted it.
01:17:39Great day for Mika Hakanen.
01:17:41Unfolding on a track that has been just cruel to him
01:17:45over the years.
01:17:46Getting just a finish here.
01:17:47Hakanen and Frentzen, you see there, in second position.
01:17:50A good drive for him.
01:17:51Fizzy Keller still on the podium.
01:17:53And maybe he'll come under some pressure from Irvine.
01:17:56But with less than 10 laps to go, perhaps not.
01:17:58Irvine in fourth.
01:17:59Ralf Schumacher, fifth position.
01:18:01A couple of points waiting for him.
01:18:03And in sixth position, Johnny Herbert with a points race,
01:18:08perhaps in his immediate future as well.
01:18:10What a splendid drive from Heinz-Harald Frentzen.
01:18:13Yet again, he really feels at home with that Jordan team.
01:18:16They spent a lot of time indoctrinating him to the Jordan way
01:18:19at the beginning of the year.
01:18:19But my goodness, he is part of the team.
01:18:21Whereas at Williams, where he was for two years,
01:18:23you remember he took over from Damon Hill.
01:18:25And in this particular case, Heinz-Harald Frentzen was not happy.
01:18:28But this team, Jordan, he is very, very happy indeed.
01:18:32And he's got, of course, the attentions back there of Frentzen.
01:18:36Peter Wintzer, more on Benetton.
01:18:38Yeah, I'm down in the Benetton garage now.
01:18:40And of course, they're very nervous about the situation at the moment.
01:18:42But a fantastic reward for these guys.
01:18:44They've worked very, very hard since the last race in Barcelona
01:18:48to completely change the way they set up the car.
01:18:50Not just running the car, but also the way they set it up in the garage.
01:18:53They've really gone back to basics
01:18:54because they've been head-scratching since the start of the year.
01:18:57They've got a very, very good result right in front of them.
01:19:00Let's hope that the car stays together for Fizzy Keller.
01:19:02Well, the last two times out here, he's been third and second in this Grand Prix.
01:19:06Irvine just set the fastest lap of the race.
01:19:08So he is on a charge.
01:19:10120.6.
01:19:12So he's lapping a second quicker than Fizzy Keller,
01:19:14but he is still 10 seconds, nearly 11 seconds behind him.
01:19:17And that is a long time with only 10 laps to go.
01:19:21A little less than 10 now as we wind it down here
01:19:24in the 31st running of the Canadian Grand Prix.
01:19:27This is just round six of a long season.
01:19:30On Sunday, June 27th at 10 a.m. on Fox Sportsnet,
01:19:34the Grand Prix of France,
01:19:35where Michael Schumacher is the two-time defending champion.
01:19:38The Grand Prix of France from Magny-Cours.
01:19:41Please check your local listings.
01:19:46We were talking about Heinz-Harald Frentzen a moment ago.
01:19:48He's a fellow who, over the years,
01:19:50has had difficulty in five previous Canadian races.
01:19:53He got fourth two years ago.
01:19:54The other four were retirements.
01:19:56Wonderful day for him.
01:19:57Yeah, very good.
01:19:58I mean, he's really been pushing.
01:19:59He's 8.9 behind Fizzy Keller now.
01:20:01So he pulled in two seconds on that lap on Fizzy Keller.
01:20:04The Ferrari's hanging the board out down there.
01:20:07That is very, very pleasing.
01:20:08There goes Eddie.
01:20:09Pretty close up front.
01:20:11This, the fight on the screen, is for sixth position.
01:20:14Johnny Herbert and Denis right there
01:20:16in the frame on the pit straightaway.
01:20:18Yeah, Denis really doing an incredible job.
01:20:20You know, this young Brazilian,
01:20:22he comes with a lot of money.
01:20:23He brings sponsorship with him from companies,
01:20:25from family companies.
01:20:26And he is doing an excellent job.
01:20:28Moved up into really competitive cars
01:20:30and proved to be a very, very good driver.
01:20:32Eddie, again, getting past this lap.
01:20:35He brought it down again.
01:20:36120.6 was his time.
01:20:39No one's been under 120.
01:20:41Last year, Michael Schumacher ran a 119.3
01:20:44in the race for fast lap honors.
01:20:46Yeah, he's just 10 seconds behind now.
01:20:48But there's still a long way to go.
01:20:51We'll be back on Fox Sportsnet
01:20:53for the finish of the Canadian Grand Prix.
01:20:56There are the top six.
01:20:57It could still change.
01:20:59Stay with us.
01:21:05Welcome back to the closing stages
01:21:07of the Canadian Grand Prix.
01:21:09Sensation here this afternoon.
01:21:10We've had accidents.
01:21:11We've had Michael Schumacher hit the wall,
01:21:13leading the race.
01:21:14And right now, again,
01:21:15we still have Eddie Irvine on the charge
01:21:17in the second from behind.
01:21:18Right now, Giancarlo Fisichella is his target.
01:21:21He's in third place in the Benetton.
01:21:22Eddie Irvine catching him by the lap.
01:21:25He's got it down to 7.7 seconds.
01:21:28There may still be time at this pace
01:21:30for maybe a last, last lap down.
01:21:34Did I say that right?
01:21:34Last lap down.
01:21:38It's absolutely wonderful to see Eddie Irvine
01:21:41streaking in these really, really fast times.
01:21:43Absolutely phenomenal
01:21:44because he's running quicker than Schumacher was
01:21:46at the same time,
01:21:47on the same tires and fuel load.
01:21:51On board with Trenton,
01:21:53who right now is in second position in this race.
01:22:03Teammates looking on as he approaches the pit straight.
01:22:06There he is, the yellow car.
01:22:08Moving into the corner.
01:22:101.6, the margin against Fisichella.
01:22:13Now 7.7 back to Eddie Irvine,
01:22:15who may come into view before too long.
01:22:17Oh, there he is.
01:22:18There he was, just coming out of the corner.
01:22:20Just out of the corner.
01:22:21So he's a straightaway away.
01:22:22A couple of corners back.
01:22:23Not far.
01:22:24Just coming past the end of the pit lane there.
01:22:27Of course, what's happening here
01:22:28is Fisichella can't get too close to the Jordan.
01:22:30The Jordan guy is reasonably happy.
01:22:32So he's consolidating, not making any efforts.
01:22:34And of course, Fisichella is chasing like crazy.
01:22:37What's really happening is that
01:22:39Frentzen doesn't mind too much about Eddie coming behind him
01:22:42because he knows he's got to get by Fisichella first
01:22:45and he can probably turn it on himself.
01:22:47He doesn't want to take a risk at this point
01:22:48to get Jordan's best finish of the year.
01:22:50Open road ahead of Heinz-Harald Frentzen there.
01:22:53Less than five laps to go.
01:22:54Tracking the leader, Mika Hakkinen.
01:22:56He's lapping at 1.21 very comfortably.
01:22:59Still 13 seconds in front of those
01:23:01who are still contesting second, third,
01:23:03and to some degree, fourth position.
01:23:05As Irvine closes down another second on Fisichella.
01:23:08That's the fight for third.
01:23:10There's second and third right there.
01:23:12And it's less than a second between them.
01:23:12There's Eddie coming into view there.
01:23:14He can see them as well.
01:23:15And I suppose from a driver's perspective,
01:23:17when they come into view, that really makes a difference.
01:23:20Absolutely amazing.
01:23:21When you can see those guys in front of you,
01:23:23you just pull out the stops.
01:23:24You somehow go that bit faster.
01:23:27Unbelievable feeling and a sensation.
01:23:29It just gives that extra bit of time.
01:23:32There he is on the straightaway,
01:23:33approaching 200 miles an hour.
01:23:35We'll give you the gap once they get back
01:23:37to the timing lights on the front straightaway.
01:23:41He's got that Minardi to overtake,
01:23:42but the Minardi shouldn't hold him up too much.
01:23:45But look at him.
01:23:45He's a little bit closer than he was last lap.
01:23:47Not a tremendous amount, but he's about six-tenths quicker,
01:23:51closer than he was.
01:23:53Four laps remaining, and Eddie's giving it everything he's got.
01:23:55He's picked up nine-tenths of a second
01:23:57in each of the last two laps.
01:23:59Oh, look at this.
01:24:00Look at Frentzen's off the road.
01:24:02He lost it.
01:24:02He's taken the rear wing off.
01:24:04That lets Eddie up one more spot.
01:24:06Is he all right?
01:24:07It looks like he might be hurt.
01:24:09He looks like he really took a nasty crash there.
01:24:11And that's Zanardi looking out.
01:24:14He's been working hard today as well.
01:24:15So that was the beginning of lap number 66.
01:24:18Just four to go,
01:24:19and Heinz-Held Frentzen finds the same grief
01:24:22that so many have earlier this day.
01:24:26Peter, have you got word on anything that might have happened?
01:24:29Well, it's very early days.
01:24:30We were watching this on the monitor,
01:24:31and it looked as if something black came out of the back of the car.
01:24:33Maybe the engine went, and maybe he spun on his own oil.
01:24:36Very early days.
01:24:37We're looking at a replay,
01:24:38and that's...
01:24:39I don't know if that's definitive, Derek.
01:24:40What do you think?
01:24:41No, it's a mighty big crash.
01:24:42I mean, it's so difficult to say unless you can see more of the incident.
01:24:45I think he's had a tremendous shake-up.
01:24:47He's hit the barrier very, very hard,
01:24:49and it's really done him no good at all.
01:24:51I think he's just very winded,
01:24:53and Eddie is at the moment on the podium,
01:24:54so we are going to hear him speak at the press conference after all.
01:24:57He can get it going.
01:24:59Of course, he's now down to 5.9 behind Fisichella.
01:25:01He hasn't pulled much in on that one.
01:25:05Yeah, the safety cars are out again.
01:25:07So that bunches them all up for the last three laps.
01:25:10My goodness.
01:25:11And Minka Hagen, in his 11.5-second lead,
01:25:14with less than three laps to go,
01:25:16will go away behind the safety car
01:25:19with Eddie Irvine and Fisichella behind him,
01:25:23along with Schumacher, Herbert,
01:25:25and Pedro Diniz, who moves up into the points.
01:25:27Yeah, I saw Hagen in there lift up his visor,
01:25:31let some air in it.
01:25:32Obviously, it's very hot in the car.
01:25:33He does suffer a lot from the heat, as Minka,
01:25:35and he lifted up his visor to let some extra air in
01:25:38while he was going not-so-fast under a full-course yellow.
01:25:42Peter Windsor is with Alex Zanardi, who retired a bit ago.
01:25:45Alex, not a good day.
01:25:47Very bad luck.
01:25:47What exactly happened?
01:25:52They had many problems, as normal.
01:25:56First, the brake balance bar broken,
01:26:01and I couldn't adjust the brake balance.
01:26:03Second, I lost the headrest.
01:26:06Third, I don't know what was the problem
01:26:10with the thing that stopped the penalty.
01:26:14Fourth, the engine was standing still in a straight line.
01:26:17And fifth, overall, something broke in the back of the car.
01:26:20I guess either the differential or something in the transmission
01:26:24and took me out of the race.
01:26:26That was terminal.
01:26:27Thanks, Alex.
01:26:28Very bad luck.
01:26:28Back to you, Chris.
01:26:30And a fact to pass along with Pedro Diniz out there
01:26:34running in sixth position.
01:26:35He's retired in the last eight Grands Prix he's contested,
01:26:38reaching into last season.
01:26:40So this may be a breakthrough day for him,
01:26:42certainly from an emotional standpoint,
01:26:44in the sixth position.
01:26:46Peter, let's go back to you.
01:26:47Heinz-Harald Frentzen, the word on him, if you would.
01:26:50Yes, the word here is that a disc broke.
01:26:53This is going into the corner.
01:26:54That black smoke we saw coming out of the back of the car
01:26:56was a brake disc exploding.
01:26:58So the heat in the brakes taking its toll.
01:27:01Other elements have taken their toll.
01:27:03Again, a high attrition race here in Canada.
01:27:07We have seven running on the lead lap
01:27:09and a big shuffle to Coulthard here with the safety car out,
01:27:12working lap 68.
01:27:13We've got to get a green flag next time around.
01:27:15But Coulthard can bunch up and he is on the lead lap
01:27:18and might be in position, if he gets the timing right,
01:27:21to steal a point.
01:27:22He may well do.
01:27:23Yes, he could easily do that.
01:27:25Heinz-Harald being sort of supported away by the doctors,
01:27:28by Dr. Professor Watkins,
01:27:30who is the Grand Prix resident doctor,
01:27:33knows all the intricacies of car accidents
01:27:36and what goes on with these poor guys.
01:27:37And he's a real support to all the drivers
01:27:40when accidents happen.
01:27:41He's always there helping.
01:27:42There is the pace car now, of course, in front.
01:27:44Remember where Eddie Irvine is.
01:27:46He's going to have a shot at Fizikela.
01:27:47Let's watch this.
01:27:48And Fizikela will be having a shot at DC if we go green.
01:27:51Remember, they did actually move.
01:27:55They did move Frenton away from the car.
01:27:58So maybe he's safe by now.
01:27:59But this isn't over yet.
01:28:00The safety car stayed up on pit road.
01:28:03And this is the conclusion of lap number 68.
01:28:05So this may be it.
01:28:08One more time around and 69 will be concluded.
01:28:11And at very reduced speed,
01:28:14Mika Hakkinen, Fizikela, Irvine,
01:28:16Ralf Schumacher, Herbert,
01:28:19Denis Coulthard moving through.
01:28:21There are some laps cars mixed in there
01:28:25as they line up in single file.
01:28:28Oh, that was a big hit.
01:28:29Yeah, he really did whack that one in.
01:28:32When the brakes go,
01:28:32that is the most frightening thing any driver experiences.
01:28:35Well, the steering going as well is something else.
01:28:37It's pretty hideous.
01:28:39Well, the car up behind Gerald Prince
01:28:41is being lifted away.
01:28:42And that was our first glimpse of the damage,
01:28:44which gave us an idea of the velocity of that impact.
01:28:47He did stay in the car.
01:28:49For a good long time,
01:28:50didn't appear to be in great distress,
01:28:52but caution is something you absolutely must take
01:28:55when a driver has any complaints.
01:28:58Sad, obviously very sad, again, for our man.
01:29:02Behind us are our friends.
01:29:03But wouldn't it have been an exciting last few laps
01:29:05if they'd lit up with the green now
01:29:07with Eddie Irvine back there
01:29:08and Coulthard behind as well.
01:29:10That would have been something else,
01:29:11a blast for the Finns.
01:29:13Yeah, a one lap trophy dash indeed
01:29:15of 2.7 miles or so.
01:29:17They're saying down there at the Ferrari pit,
01:29:19there's one lap to go.
01:29:20So they may go green for one lap.
01:29:22Okay.
01:29:23Our scoreboard says lap 68.
01:29:32What flag is that gentleman holding there
01:29:33just behind the yellow?
01:29:35I thought it was a checker in hand.
01:29:37We'll wait and see.
01:29:38They'll give us an official signal in just a moment.
01:29:41But everybody moving around very slowly.
01:29:44And a big day for Mika Hakkinen.
01:29:46A terrible Friday, a reasonable Saturday.
01:29:49The lights are out on the pace car.
01:29:51That means they're going to get one more lap.
01:29:52And this I'm very much mistaken.
01:29:56Pace car lights are out
01:29:57as they come down the back straightaway,
01:29:59which means we're going to get
01:30:00just one more lap to the finish.
01:30:02At least I'm pretty sure they are.
01:30:03It should be quite an exciting finish in my opinion.
01:30:06The yellow flag is still being held at the stand.
01:30:08No, it's gone in now.
01:30:10Yellow flag is in at the stand now.
01:30:12We're going to get a green somewhere.
01:30:13It should be a pretty electrifying last lap
01:30:14as they come into the last turn.
01:30:17We'll wait and see.
01:30:18The flag man has the checkered.
01:30:20The safety car was just getting out of the way
01:30:22so they'd get a clean picture of the finish.
01:30:24Mika Hakkinen is the winner.
01:30:25Lap 69 is indeed done.
01:30:27Fisichella in second.
01:30:28Then Irvine, Schumacher, Herbert, and Donitz,
01:30:31the top six in the points.
01:30:33Courteous thing to do for the safety car driver
01:30:35to get out of the way
01:30:37so that Mika had a nice picture of his victory in Canada.
01:30:40So we'll be back to hear from the winners,
01:30:42review the points,
01:30:44and all the aftermath of an exciting Canadian Grand Prix.
01:30:47You're watching it live on Fox Sportsnet.
01:30:50Don't go away.
01:30:53Welcome back to the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
01:30:56A winner has been declared.
01:30:58It is Mika Hakkinen.
01:31:00His eighth Canadian Grand Prix.
01:31:02The second time he's finished.
01:31:04And after two years running with no finish,
01:31:06he has the victory.
01:31:07Ron Dennis, obviously a very happy fellow.
01:31:10And he should be a very happy man.
01:31:13I'm reporting to Parc Fermé as they conclude this event.
01:31:18The unofficial results.
01:31:19There is Eddie Irvine, who finished in third.
01:31:22Mika Hakkinen, the winner.
01:31:23Giancarlo Fisichella in second.
01:31:24Then Eddie Irvine, Ralph Schumacher,
01:31:27Johnny Herbert, and Pedro Donitz in the points.
01:31:30It was a high attrition race.
01:31:31Beyond that, David Coulthard, Marc Genet, Olivier Pannier,
01:31:35and Luca Badawer.
01:31:36Those are the only ones that will be classified in the event.
01:31:40There were 10 of them running at the end.
01:31:43119th victory for McLaren.
01:31:45And the 12th career victory for Mika Hakkinen,
01:31:49who is about to climb out.
01:31:51Perhaps he has climbed out of his car already.
01:31:53Eddie Irvine on the left there.
01:31:55And Fisichella also in the picture there.
01:31:58And they'll be headed to the press conference
01:32:00in just a couple of moments.
01:32:01But a great drive back, I think, Derek,
01:32:03for Eddie Irvine after the touch and the off
01:32:06with David Coulthard.
01:32:07Yeah, in fact, I would say that's the best drive
01:32:09I've ever seen Eddie Irvine do, actually.
01:32:12Absolutely outstanding coming up through like that.
01:32:13It wasn't easy.
01:32:14And he was making time up very slightly on the leader as well.
01:32:17So I thought it was an outstanding drive
01:32:18and a great drive for Mika Hakkinen
01:32:20after all the disappointments of practice.
01:32:21He gets to Parc Fermé a little bit later than the others.
01:32:24I think driving extra slowly around,
01:32:26waving to the crowd, and savoring this moment
01:32:29in a place that has been, frankly, cruel to him.
01:32:32Yeah, but look at him now.
01:32:33I mean, he was working hard.
01:32:35He was working really hard.
01:32:37He beat Canada at last.
01:32:39And after some very difficult moments in the past,
01:32:43a well-earned victory, although, to a degree,
01:32:45handed to him by Michael Schumacher's off.
01:32:47An off that cost Michael the lead in the championship.
01:32:50Hakkinen gets 10 points and jumps ahead.
01:32:52Eddie Irvine drives back to four points
01:32:55and gets 25 on the season.
01:32:57And Johnny Herbert in the points,
01:32:58his first points of the year.
01:33:00In the Constructors' Championship,
01:33:02it still belongs to Ferrari in terms of the race,
01:33:04but it is closer.
01:33:06Give Irvine great credit there.
01:33:07Those four points for Ferrari will be savored
01:33:10as much as driving back into the podium.
01:33:12McLaren Mercedes, though, they've now picked up,
01:33:15let's see, it was 16 plus 10 is 26 points in two races
01:33:18on the Constructors' side.
01:33:19That's not bad.
01:33:20That is not bad.
01:33:20And that's what they needed
01:33:21because they were looking not too good
01:33:22just the other day, two races ago.
01:33:25And Mika now being steered into the press conference area
01:33:29where he will meet with the world and give his comments
01:33:32on a day that turned out so very, very well on his behalf.
01:33:3669 laps of fury on the Ile de Notre Dame.
01:33:39Take a look at the results again
01:33:41as Hakkinen, Fisichella, Irvine, Schumacher,
01:33:43Herbert and Diniz in the points.
01:33:45Coulthard, Jeunet, Pagny and Badoit.
01:33:48And a word about Johnny Herbert, fifth place,
01:33:51couple of points and a good drive,
01:33:53solid drive all around
01:33:55and a day when you can get in trouble in a hurry.
01:33:57Yeah, well, you saw his teammate
01:33:58who we thought would be the one to goal the points
01:34:00and it's Johnny getting the points.
01:34:01So I'm really delighted for Stewart
01:34:03in their first outing as factory 14.
01:34:07Mika up onto the podium.
01:34:11That's as much emotion as I've seen maybe since Japan.
01:34:14He was fairly animated there.
01:34:17Yeah, that was a great bit of emotion for Mika.
01:34:19I think they needed this
01:34:21because I think he believed Ferrari were going to do it.
01:34:23And the anthems.
01:35:03And of course, all the signs of a hot day,
01:35:21the constructors anthem now.
01:36:03So often they're described as somewhat robotic,
01:36:18ice water in their veins,
01:36:19and certainly in the midst of a concentrated
01:36:21Grand Prix performance, that can be the case.
01:36:24But an animated Mika Hakkinen
01:36:26is receiving his trophy right now.
01:36:30The Prime Minister of the Province of Quebec,
01:36:33Lucien Bouchard, with the winner's trophy.
01:36:37And the winning constructor from R. Lamar Durette,
01:36:39the CEO of Air Canada.
01:36:42Two most welcomed trophies here in the sunshine of Montreal.
01:36:49The trophy to the second place driver.
01:36:54Again, the Prime Minister of Quebec, Lucien Bouchard.
01:36:57To Mr. Fisichella.
01:37:04And third place, Eddie Irvine, presented by Roger Parrott,
01:37:07the President of ASN in Canada.
01:37:10Well-earned third place in podium for that man.
01:37:13Very, very popular indeed.
01:37:15Look, here goes the champagne
01:37:16and all the hierarchy leave quickly.
01:37:18These boys are wet already.
01:37:19They don't mind champagne all over them.
01:37:21Great moment for all of them.
01:37:23And the people that hide behind are not immune today
01:37:27as they go behind the podium
01:37:29and still get the champagne spray.
01:37:31Mika Hakkinen, victorious again in Canada.
01:37:35We'll be back in just a couple of moments
01:37:37to hear the top three press conference.
01:37:40And you talk about emotion, here he is.
01:37:43Just after he got out of his car.
01:37:45What a moment for Team McLaren and Mika Hakkinen.
01:37:48Stay with us.
01:37:49There's still more to come on Fox Sports Net.
01:37:51Welcome back.
01:37:56The Canadian Grand Prix is concluded.
01:37:58The press conference is underway.
01:38:00Let's go there.
01:38:01And I was just able to go quicker if I wanted to,
01:38:05but there was no reason for it
01:38:09because the level of risk, what could have happened.
01:38:12And then I saw Michael going off
01:38:16and I don't know exactly what happened,
01:38:18but it turned out to be very good for me.
01:38:23That's racing.
01:38:24And here I am.
01:38:27I won the race.
01:38:28Great feeling.
01:38:29When you saw Michael in the wall,
01:38:30did you think about Imola?
01:38:33I did, actually.
01:38:35I did, actually.
01:38:37And I remember saying that before the Barcelona,
01:38:41our car is extremely difficult to drive.
01:38:44And now it is better.
01:38:46It is definitely a more consistent car.
01:38:49You can push the car more on the limit
01:38:51and you can keep it on the limit the car longer time.
01:38:54But obviously it has turned the other way around.
01:38:57It looks like these guys now have difficulties.
01:39:02Mika, thank you.
01:39:03Giancarlo, you must love Canada.
01:39:05Three years, three podiums.
01:39:06Second again.
01:39:07A race-long battle with Heinz Hard Frenzen.
01:39:10Tell us the story of your race.
01:39:12Yes, this place for me is very...
01:39:15Maybe it is very lucky for me.
01:39:17I am so pleased about the result today.
01:39:20And my target was to score some points.
01:39:23And I am on the podium.
01:39:25I am in the second position.
01:39:26That is great.
01:39:29The strategy was perfect.
01:39:30Just at the beginning of the race,
01:39:32with a lot of fuel,
01:39:33it was very difficult to drive a car
01:39:35because there was a lot on the steering.
01:39:37But then with half tank,
01:39:39that was much better.
01:39:40When I lost my second position
01:39:43with, I think, Panis and...
01:39:45By the way, I don't know who it was.
01:39:49I was very upset for that
01:39:51because they were one lap behind me
01:39:55and for them I lost the position.
01:39:58But then Heinz Harald spun off
01:40:01and I gained the second position.
01:40:04It's a great, great position today.
01:40:07Giancarlo, thank you.
01:40:08Eddie, you probably had the most eventful race of anybody.
01:40:11After a reasonably quiet start,
01:40:13after the first safety car,
01:40:14an incident with David,
01:40:15how did you see it?
01:40:17Well, at the start of the race,
01:40:17I just looked after the brakes
01:40:19and tried to go as fast as I could
01:40:20without really pushing the car too much.
01:40:22And then I started pushing
01:40:24and, of course, a safety car came out.
01:40:25And then, well, I forget,
01:40:27there were two cars in front of me,
01:40:28two backmarkers,
01:40:29and one of them went really badly
01:40:31through the dirt, through the chicane.
01:40:33I got it on my tyres
01:40:34and I just turned left coming onto the straight
01:40:36and it just kept going straight,
01:40:37straight towards the wall
01:40:38and I had to just back off.
01:40:39Of course, that allowed DC to get a run.
01:40:41And then we were side by side
01:40:44through the first corner,
01:40:45but he went very, very wide.
01:40:46And then I just took the next one
01:40:49and he just clipped my rear wheel and spun me.
01:40:51And then it got fun.
01:40:54You know, after Barcelona, Jesus.
01:40:56It got quite controversial, actually,
01:40:58because in the way you went past Herbert,
01:41:00how did you see that?
01:41:01Well, he was a lot slower than me.
01:41:04You know, it's great we have a bit of controversy
01:41:05in Formula One, isn't it?
01:41:08Yeah, I was down the inside of him
01:41:09and the two of us just break right on the limit.
01:41:11And I was on the dirt on the inside
01:41:13and I could have tried to make the corner,
01:41:15but I might have lost it.
01:41:15So I thought it was better just to go straight.
01:41:18And I don't know what happened to Johnny,
01:41:19but he seemed to lose a lot of time as well.
01:41:20So I don't know whether he followed me through it
01:41:22or whether he made the corner or not.
01:41:23I don't know.
01:41:25Eddie, thank you.
01:41:25Mick, are we now?
01:41:27And there they are, three men
01:41:29of great accomplishment and honour
01:41:30on the Ile de Notre Dame
01:41:32and the Sequite Gilles du Nouveau.
01:41:33Mika Hakkinen, Fischikella and Irvine.
01:41:36We'll be back to wrap it up
01:41:37on Fox Sports Net in a moment.
01:41:45Welcome back to Montreal, Canada.
01:41:47The race is run.
01:41:48Mika Hakkinen is the winner.
01:41:50Peter Windsor, some final thoughts.
01:41:52Well, a sensational Grand Prix.
01:41:54I mean, it doesn't really get better than that.
01:41:56Fantastic drive from Mika Hakkinen.
01:41:57Great drive from Eddie Irvine.
01:41:59And I have to say,
01:42:00the recovery performance of the Benetton team
01:42:02is just outstanding.
01:42:03Where they've come from to get on the podium
01:42:06is just something that I think
01:42:07is probably the performance of the race.
01:42:09Back to you.
01:42:11There might be a little argument about that
01:42:13in terms of Eddie Irvine,
01:42:14but it was action-packed, Derek.
01:42:16No question about that.
01:42:17Preston, this is the first lap.
01:42:18Look at Trulli taken out.
01:42:19Poor old Rubens Barrichello and Orjano Lazi.
01:42:22A very naive, immature move, I think,
01:42:24by Orjano Trulli.
01:42:26Not at all.
01:42:27Look at him losing it there,
01:42:28coming in the break.
01:42:29He thought he was going to set
01:42:29the world alight in one lap.
01:42:30He did, but it wasn't much good for him.
01:42:33And a series of crashes in the same corner.
01:42:36Yes, turn 14.
01:42:37Here they come through.
01:42:38Here comes Ricciardo Zonda on lap two.
01:42:40And he takes a wheel off
01:42:41as he comes through that early in the race.
01:42:43Then it was Damon's turn on lap 14.
01:42:46He gets it all sideways, coming in.
01:42:47Loses it under braking, coming in.
01:42:49Gets too much right angles.
01:42:50He locks the wheel off as well.
01:42:51And then on lap 24,
01:42:53us, the man who's leading the race
01:42:55and leading the world championship.
01:42:57Very uncapturing accent.
01:42:58He loses it too, under braking, coming in.
01:43:00And whacks the wall.
01:43:01Then it was Zhat Villeneuve,
01:43:02who had made a very good run so far.
01:43:04In the 34th lap, he had a very nasty,
01:43:07almost piercing in the wall as he went through.
01:43:10Sultarn and Irvine got together on a restart.
01:43:12Very costly.
01:43:13Yes, very costly for the two of them.
01:43:15Well, it's more costly for David than anybody.
01:43:17And then it was Heinz-Harald Frentzen,
01:43:18who's very sadly running in great form in second place.
01:43:21We believe he had a brake disc explode,
01:43:23shooting him into a tar wall
01:43:24with a certain amount of personal damage.
01:43:26But he is still laughing about it.
01:43:29And then finally, it was Mika Hakkinen
01:43:30who goes across the line.
01:43:31Outstanding drive by Mika.
01:43:33After a race of attrition, lots of incidents.
01:43:36Very happy Mika Hakkinen climbing out of the cockpit.
01:43:40A hot day in Montreal.
01:43:42But he is one of the survivors
01:43:44and takes 10 points away from Canada.
