00:00In November 2021, Tasmania police launched a manhunt, searching for Kerry Lee Whiting.
00:10He had fled into the bush after going to the Ravenswood home of his former partner Natalie
00:14Harris and her new boyfriend Adrian Mayne. Whiting repeatedly stabbed the couple while
00:20they were sleeping. Mr Mayne died at the scene while Miss Harris survived, her teenage son
00:25providing life-saving first aid and calling triple zero. Whiting was later found hiding
00:30in his shed. Last week, a Supreme Court jury found the 47-year-old guilty of murdering
00:36Mr Mayne and attempting to murder Miss Harris. Today, Whiting was sentenced to 38 years in
00:42prison for the crimes. In her sentencing remarks today, Justice Tamara Jago said Whiting's
00:47actions were family violence of the most extreme kind. She said the crimes were appalling and
00:53significantly aggravated by the presence of his children. She said Whiting committed
00:58the selfish, brutal and callous crimes because he had no other way of exerting control over
01:03his ex-partner. Whiting will be eligible for parole after 24 years in prison. His sentence
01:09was backdated to December 2021, when he was first arrested.
