After unexpected flash flooding early yesterday, Alice Springs residents have been dealing with the aftermath in the red centre town. Record-breaking rainfall led the Todd River that runs through the centre of town to burst its banks. Filling underground carparks and causing local support services to close their doors.

00:02A big clean-up, as Alice Springs takes stock after a frightening flash flood.
00:09Probably haven't seen it as bad as it was yesterday.
00:11Well, I've seen the river flood before, so it wasn't that exciting.
00:15It's just that now I have a smelly office.
00:18Yeah, it was nice having rain. My ceiling flooded in, but it was alright.
00:22Your ceiling flooded in?
00:23Yeah. Alice just isn't built for water.
00:25Flooded basements being pumped dry.
00:28Crews are continuing the clean-up efforts in Alice Springs today,
00:32with the low-ground car parks along the Todd River completely inundated with water.
00:36In this car park behind me, there are many cars that are entirely submerged.
00:41Our immediate focus has, of course, been safety,
00:44and as I said, our council crew have been out clearing roads
00:47and easing access through the town.
00:49Local support service Lutheran Care forced to shut its doors due to flood damage.
00:54People desperate for food, shelter and financial support turned away.
00:59Well, unfortunately, the water has flooded this whole area.
01:02Usually we will, I guess, support and work with over 100 people a week,
01:07so there's 100 people during this time that we haven't been able to support from the building.
01:12And a call for better flood mitigation plans in the future.
01:17We are getting record rainfalls, and because there is more rain falling,
01:22we've got to deal with this, otherwise we're going to have, you know, the floods come again.
01:28But locals still welcome the water.
01:31It's so big at the water.
01:33It's so big.
01:35And I jump.
01:36A flooded desert figuring it out.
01:40It's so big.
01:40You
