00:00For university student Moli Bagma, grocery shopping is something she needs to carefully
00:07budget for.
00:08I sometimes feel like I'm living below poverty line.
00:12I do not have money to spend on my personal leisure.
00:15Moli only has a casual job, and is always on the lookout for a cheaper deal, which often
00:21leads her to Aldi.
00:23And especially when I compare the prices of Aldi to Coles and Woolies, there's a massive
00:27difference.
00:28A report by consumer group Choice found that for a basket of 14 common grocery items, it
00:36would cost you around $51 at Aldi, $68 at Woolies and $69 at Coles.
00:44Choice sent out mystery shoppers to compare prices on products including Webix, bread,
00:50beef mince and butter.
00:52And the purpose of them is really to make sure that consumers are getting access to
00:56transparent pricing information when it comes to supermarkets.
00:59This is the first supermarket price comparison report from Choice after they received over
01:05a million dollars in the federal budget.
01:08They will do a report every three months for three years, with the aim to help shoppers
01:13to make more informed decisions on their groceries.
01:18Supermarket giants are facing ongoing allegations of price gouging to record massive profits.
01:24There is effectively not a duopoly but a monopoly in the supermarket sector.
01:29There is effectively no choice between Coles and Woolworths.
01:33Use your guile and your ability to actually check out prices and to shop around.
01:39In a statement, Coles says it's unclear whether like-for-like products are being compared
01:45in the report, while Woolworths says customers can use its app or website to find specials.
01:51I would like to see cheaper prices because the price hike has been insane.
01:57In a cost-of-living crisis, every dollar counts.
