Thunderstorms to bring repeated downpours to the Upper Midwest

Record-challenging heat in the Midwest will contribute to day after day of storms, presenting flash flooding dangers.

00:00As we head to Wisconsin now, where severe thunderstorms are bringing heavy rain, Justin.

00:04Yeah, look at that. Gutter gushing downpours here as is seen earlier on.

00:09You know, as we go throughout the evening into the overnight, if anything, we'll be looking at more numerous thunderstorms

00:14developing here into Wisconsin as well as into Minnesota.

00:18Let's take a look here as we go toward that 9 to 10 o'clock time frame.

00:21Heavy rain coming down from these thunderstorms as well, and that could result in a flash flood potential

00:27as we evolve through time. And then look at these lines lifting their way quickly up from the south.

00:32That's just a pipeline of moisture streaming its way off to the north,

00:37and that will set the stage for additional thunderstorms as we head our way into Tuesday.

00:42But a warm night here, only dropping into the mid and the upper 70s around Omaha, Des Moines, Kansas City,

00:48even toward Sioux Falls where there can be some thunderstorms going on here throughout the late night.

00:54So make sure you're finding ways to stay cool as we've talked about the heat wave,

00:58not only by the afternoon high temperatures, but also the impacts that fell at night where there's not much relief.

01:04And more storms all the way here, like I said, on Tuesday with that rich moisture surging its way north,

01:09meeting up with cooler and drier air, a moderate risk implying numerous severe thunderstorms stretching from Nebraska

01:16into a northeastern Minnesota where flash flooding, hail, isolated tornadoes and damaging winds

01:22will all be a possibility. There's a rather large flood watch out,

01:25and this is going to be due to the repetitive nature of showers and thunderstorms on a daily basis

01:31going forth throughout today, tonight, into Tuesday, and even as we work our way into Wednesday.

01:37In fact, I'll show you the overall setup here for these repeated downpours this week.

01:41Like I said, it all boils down to a collision of the air masses, jet stream energy lifting its way well off toward the north,

01:47and that allows the hot and the humid air to surge north and meet up with cooler and drier air

01:53that is being experienced over the intermountain and northwest.

01:56And this could cause some huge travel delays, the potential for flight cancellations,

02:00having a big impact on outdoor plans, and as I mentioned here with numerous rounds of storms

02:05comes the concern of flash flooding.
